4. Charging port or vehicle inlet: It is a
connector present on the electric vehicle
to allow it to be connected to an external
source of electricity for charging

5. Power electronic converter: A power electronic
converter is made of high power fast-acting
semiconductor devices, which act as high-speed
switches. Different switching states alter the input
voltage and current through the use of capacitive and
inductive elements. The result is an output voltage
and current, which is at a different level to the input.

6. On-board charger: It is an AC-to-DC power
electronic converter (often referred to as a
rectifier) that takes the incoming AC
electricity supplied via the charge port and
converts it to DC power for charging the
traction battery.

7. Traction battery pack: It is a
high voltage battery used to
store energy in the electric
car and provide power for
use by the electric traction
motor.

8. Motor
The motor converts electric energy into kinetic energy
that moves the wheels. The advantage of using the motor
instead of an engine is numerous: first, the noise and the
vibration we typically associate with cars are minimized.
Many passengers riding EVs for the first time are
surprised by just how quiet and comfortable the ride
feels. Moreover, the EV powertrain is smaller than the
engine, thus providing lots of additional space for
efficient vehicle design―like expanded cabin space or
storage.

9. Motor drive: It is a DC-to-AC (often referred to as
inverter or the variable frequency drive) or at
times a DC-to-DC power electronic converter,
used to convert power from the high voltage DC
bus to AC (or at times DC) power for the operation
of motor. The converter is bidirectional for
operating in both driving and regenerative braking
mode.

The battery of an electric car can be charged through the
use of ordinary grid electricity at a specialized power
station. But aside from the conventional lithium-ion
battery technologies, there are also other major battery
technologies which can be used for electric cars.
Lithium-Ion Batteries: This battery technology gives extra
performance and range. However, it also carries the
highest price tag. Lithium-ion batteries are lighter than
Lead acid and Nickel metal. These are also the batteries
used in digital cameras and smartphones.
