2. Difference between capacitor and super capacitor
 Super-capacitors have a very high power density compared to normal capacitors.
 Super-capacitors use two layers of the dielectric material separated by a
very thin insulator surface as the dielectric medium, whereas normal capacitors use
only a single layer of dielectric material.

AIM
To enhance the mileage of Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) using capacitor
and increasing the life of the battery.
OBJECTIVE
In electric vehicle, Electric motor draws high current. In order to compensate
this issue super capacitor is used. So the mileage of the HEV and battery life will
increase.

 USAGE OF SUPER CAPACITOR IN HEV
 DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF BOOST CONVERTER BASED ON THE
ENERGY REQUIREMENTS OF THE VEHICLE.

BATTERY :
 Five 12V, 28AH lead acid batteries are connected in series to drive electric motor.
 Very low energy-to-weight ratio and a low energy-to-volume ratio.
 Large power-to-weight ratio.

BLOCK DIAGRAM EXPLANATION
MOTOR :
 The Brushless DC (BLDC) motor is considered to be a high performance motor
that is capable of providing large amounts of torque over a vast speed range.
 A 850W, 60V, 28A brushless DC motor is used in the Electric Vehicle.
 High Speed – 485 RPM.
 Average Speed – 341 RPM.

CAPACITOR BANK :
 Capacitor bank contains eight 1 Farad Electric Double Layer Capacitors
inside with them which are connected in series.
 It is used to supply high current during starting period.
 It gets charged by the battery.

BIDIRECTIONAL DC-DC CONVERTER :
 A DC-to-DC converter is an electronic circuit which converts a source of direct
current (DC) from one voltage level to another.
 It is necessary, because the super capacitor voltage is minimum.
 It is used to increase the voltage of the super capacitor to drive a HEV motor and
also it is used to charge the super capacitor from the battery.
 This enhanced battery life.

CONTROL UNIT
PIC Microcontroller :
A Microchip PIC16F877A, 8-bit (14-bit Core), 20 MHz microcontroller is
at the heart of the controller.
Measurement of current can be easily made by using PIC16F877A.
This 40-pin chip has 33 input/output pins including 8 analog-to-digital
inputs.
Three of the pins are used as inputs for the hall effect motor position
sensors, 6 of the pins are configured as outputs to drive the 6 power
switching devices. 13

Difference between capacitor and super capacitor  Super-capacitors have a very high power density compared to normal capacitors.  Super-capacitors use two layers of the dielectric material separated by a very thin insulator surface as the dielectric medium, whereas normal capacitors use only a single layer of dielectric material. 4

  • 6. AIM To enhance the mileage of Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) using capacitor and increasing the life of the battery. OBJECTIVE In electric vehicle, Electric motor draws high current. In order to compensate this issue super capacitor is used. So the mileage of the HEV and battery life will increase. 6
  • 7. PROPOSED SYSTEM  USAGE OF SUPER CAPACITOR IN HEV  DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF BOOST CONVERTER BASED ON THE ENERGY REQUIREMENTS OF THE VEHICLE.  TRIGGER CONTROL OF BOOST CONVERTER USING PIC MICROCONTROLLER 7
  • 9. BLOCK DIAGRAM EXPLANATION BATTERY :  Five 12V, 28AH lead acid batteries are connected in series to drive electric motor.  Very low energy-to-weight ratio and a low energy-to-volume ratio.  Large power-to-weight ratio. 9

BLOCK DIAGRAM EXPLANATION MOTOR :  The Brushless DC (BLDC) motor is considered to be a high performance motor that is capable of providing large amounts of torque over a vast speed range.  A 850W, 60V, 28A brushless DC motor is used in the Electric Vehicle.  High Speed – 485 RPM.  Average Speed – 341 RPM. 10
  • 11. BLOCK DIAGRAM EXPLANATION CAPACITOR BANK :  Capacitor bank contains eight 1 Farad Electric Double Layer Capacitors inside with them which are connected in series.  It is used to supply high current during starting period.  It gets charged by the battery. 11

BLOCK DIAGRAM EXPLANATION BIDIRECTIONAL DC-DC CONVERTER :  A DC-to-DC converter is an electronic circuit which converts a source of direct current (DC) from one voltage level to another.  It is necessary, because the super capacitor voltage is minimum.  It is used to increase the voltage of the super capacitor to drive a HEV motor and also it is used to charge the super capacitor from the battery.  This enhanced battery life. 12

BLOCK DIAGRAM EXPLANATION CONTROL UNIT PIC Microcontroller : A Microchip PIC16F877A, 8-bit (14-bit Core), 20 MHz microcontroller is at the heart of the controller. Measurement of current can be easily made by using PIC16F877A. This 40-pin chip has 33 input/output pins including 8 analog-to-digital inputs. Three of the pins are used as inputs for the hall effect motor position sensors, 6 of the pins are configured as outputs to drive the 6 power switching devices. 13
