Fourth grade English classes were observed in School n° 6. The observer arrived 15 minutes early and initially felt nervous but then confident. Students asked the observer questions when they entered the classroom. The teacher, Ana, had students work in groups of 2-3 to ask each other questions about supplies like pencils and erasers. Ana explained activities in Spanish and only spoke English when entering or reading activities. She helped students understand and stay engaged in the lesson. Most students were engaged, though some groups needed more help than others to stay on task. The observer enjoyed watching Ana's motivating teaching style, like having students sing to start class.

1. Courses and year observed: Fourth grade C and D
Subject: English
Last Tuesday was my first observation practice in School n° 6. My friend and I
arrived 15 minutes before the lesson started. At first I felt a little nervous because it
was a new experience, but then I felt very confident with myself. After a few
minutes the teacher arrived and she told us to go with her. We entered and some
of the children asked us why were there, where we live and they wanted to know
our names; after answered the questions, we explained them that we were going to
observe the class. Then, the teacher, called Ana, told us to seat at the back of the
class. There were three rows of seats with two seats each where the children were
placed boy and girl. There were a lot of posters of different subjects. Before
starting the lesson, they sang a song all together to start the lesson.
In this class students revised the topic (HOW MANY…HAVE YOU GOT? WHAT
COLOUR IS IT? ) that the teacher had explained in the class before. They worked
in group of 2 or 3 because they have to ask between them about how many
rubbers, scissors, pen, etc. they have. It is related with supplies.
Ana explained every activity in Spanish; she did not speak much in English, only
when she entered to the class and when she read the activity to students. She
helped them in every moment and asked them about the topic to know if they
understood it. Ana used the same book to work in 4 c and 4 d.
All of students have the materials, that it was very important for all of them,
including the teacher. I could observe that the 90% of the class was engaged in
every activity that they had to do; they felt motivated with the subject so it is very
important because teacher could work without problems. In 4 c there are 2 groups
that Ana has to help them to work because they seemed to be not interesting in the
subject and in 4 c I can see that one of the learners, called Joaquin, did not like to
work so he annoyed his partner and in this case Ana helped him to finish the
activity.
Finally, I really really liked the lesson and also the way that Ana helped
and motivated them, for example when they were singing and at the same time
unconciously they were learning. There were lovely minutes which I would like to
repeat for the rest of the year.
