The document summarizes 3 journal entries from a student teacher's observations in an English classroom. In the first observation, the teacher reviewed previous topics, gave an activity that took 30 minutes as students asked questions, and assigned homework. The second observation saw students sharing work in a circle during break and completing 2 activities that also took 30 minutes as the teacher clarified doubts. The third journal describes the student teacher's 3 lessons, where they introduced new vocabulary, students completed activities and role-plays, and the teacher spoke English despite students' difficulties understanding at times.

Journal: Classroom Observations
1. Journal: Observation 1
Date: 31th July, 2014.
I arrived early in order to know the students and the rest of the teachers. The students were at the
break so they were playing outside. They were playing football, volleyball and tennis. It is
important to highlight that the school has all the material for them.
Once the break was finished, the teachers called the students and each course went to
their own classroom. The teacher started writing the day and the weather on the blackboard. The
students helped her to write it. After it, the teacher revised some topics from the previous class
with yes/no questions. Then, she gave the activity and they started doing it. The activity lasted
almost 30 minutes because they were asking so many questions and perhaps, there were some
times where the teacher should explain a topic from last class again.
The classroom seating was correct and they sat in a semi-circle. They maintained their
places for a moment, but then they started walking around the classroom asking objects or
explanations from other students. The teachers explained the activity into Spanish and she spoke
all the class into Spanish. She explained the topic or the principal questions in English. The teacher
controlled the activity one by one.
Finally, the teacher gave the homework and the class was finished.
2. Journal : Observation 2
Date: 1st August, 2014.
When I arrived at the institution, the students and the teachers are sitting in a circle in the
gallery. They used to do it every Friday in order to let the students show what they have done in
their subjects during the week. It lasted a few minutes during the break but it was beautiful since
they sang, danced, read poems or role plays. It was fantastic for me to observe that.
Once it has finished, the students went to their classroom and the teacher greeted them
as usual. The students helped her to write the date and the weather on the board. The teacher
asked and the students answered perfectly.
The teacher revised the previous topics through some questions and she asked for some
meanings of words pointing them in the classroom. Then, she gave them the activity to complete
with the verb “to be” positive, negative and interrogative. The students helped themselves with
some flashcards which has the three forms. (positive- negative- interrogative)
She gave them 2 activities and everyone lasted almost 30 minutes to do it! The students
took their time in doing the activities. The teacher went desk by desk clarifying doubts. Perhaps,
the teacher should give them some limited time in order to make them more responsible in doing
the activities. The same situations happened in both observations.
Finally, the teacher corrected the activity as a whole class. The teacher spoke into Spanish
some part of the class because the students started having English 2 years ago so they couldn´t
understand very well the everyday English.

The class started at 2 o´clock in the afternoon. The students were still in the break when I
arrived at the school. When the bell rang, the students went to their classroom and the class
started. The tutor sat at the back in order to let me greet the students and give the class!
The tutor asked me the lesson plan during the class and finally, she told that it was very
interesting because the activities were innovating for the students. I started writing the date and
the weather on the board as the tutor had done during the observations. During the warm-up
stage, the students answered my questions correctly. Perhaps, they needed some help but they
remembered the structure and the vocabulary very well.
During the development they worked quietly. As I have stuck some flashcards of pictures
of the new vocabulary, they asked a few questions about it and they could do the activities
perfectly. I got surprised how they acquired the new vocabulary. They have a good visual memory.
The verb “to be” is perfect since they had to do sentences orally and they made them well.
Finally, I proposed to do a game to close the class and they agreed. It was very funny
because the tutor and the headmaster took part of it! The students were happy and they revise
the vocabulary through the game!

I arrived at 2 o´clock in the afternoon. The students were playing in the playground
because they were in the break. The bell rang and they went to their classroom. The tutor sat at
the back as in the previous class. I greeted them and they started telling me about the children´s
day! I tried to make them speak in English! They used the verb “to be” to make the sentences.
They told me where they had gone and what they had done! They were happy!
They sat in a semi-circle. I started the class revising the previous vocabulary about
“clothes” and “seasons”. They remembered the vocabulary and the flashcards which were still
stuck on the walls were very useful for them. I asked them yes/no questions including given
vocabulary.
I tried to speak in English all the time but it was very difficult for them to understand all my
words! The students did their best in following me. I could explain the activities in English and
they understood me perfectly. The tutor had already told me about that but the students could
understand about the whole class. Perhaps, there were questions or sentences where I had to
help them in meaning. The tutor didn´t interfere and the students asked me every doubt they had.
It was very important since I could help them and clarify their doubts. They accepted the activities
which I have brought and they did them very well. I felt comfortable with them. The class was very
calm.
At the end, I didn´t propose any game. I greeted them! I asked about the class and they
answered me that they had enjoyed it! Then, the bell rang and they went to the break.

It was my last class and it was fantastic! The students were waiting for me because the
tutor had told them that it was my last lesson. I arrived when the bell rang and the students came
to their classroom. I wrote the date and the weather on the board and they started speaking
about how they had felt during these days shared together.
After that, I could start the lesson and I started speaking in English as I could because they
had so many difficulties in understanding me. They used to speak into Spanish with their tutor.
The warm-up stage was excellent since they enjoyed it and I felt happy since they could remember
the vocabulary very easily.
The new vocabulary and structure were acquired well and they did the activities about
problems since they had all the materials in the flashcards and they were very useful for them. The
role play was accepted perfectly. They were surprised because they hadn´t done it with their
tutor. It encouraged participation from all the students. I think that some students found the role
play easier than free discussions since they felt free to act. They were laughing during the whole
role-play since they were enjoying it.
Finally, I greeted them and told them that they were wonderful and I had learnt a lot from
them during these days.
