Essay about Financial Analysis of Priceline
Part I: The Purpose of the Report and the Research Experience
The main purpose of this report was to evaluate and research the financial information about Priceline
during the past five years to evaluate the future developing of the company.
In order to perform my research, I used Priceline s 10 K report to get the financial information that
was needed for this research. In addition, I used the company s website where I found basic
information about Priceline history and also other businesses that Priceline s group owns. Yahoo
finance and Priceline s website assisted me with their presentation of financial charts and analysis of
them. I found very useful Forbes website, where I was able to find out a lot of information about

brand new business model, two years later Walker applied for a patent for pricing system, a year later
he founded the Internet based travel agency Priceline which in 1998 begun its operation, in the very
first day the company was visited for more than half million times. The following year the company
went public and sold shares for $16 each, and most interesting that just thirty days later the stock was
traded for $165 per share. For 2000 the company purchased Lowesfares.com, which was unsuccessful,
and Mr. Walker also walked out of Priceline. In 2001 the company staked a quarterly profit, two years
later ended the car and telephone services; Priceline and Travelweb LLC got an agreement and these
two became partners. Deloitte Touche LLP is the Company s independent registered public accounting
firm. Priceline s interesting fact is that is very well known for selling airline tickets, hotel and car
reservations, but also is dedicated to offer home mortgages and everything related to loans ( Board of
Directors ).

The Creation Story Of Adam And Eve Analysis
By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you
were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return . In The Creation Story of Adam and Eve ,
those are the words God tells Adam and Eve when they failed to obey God s only rule, not eat from
the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Throughout the story we follow their relationship with God, in
the events that began with their creation and ended in their exile. Therefore, in my sole opinion based
on The Creation of Adam and Eve , the story depicts Adam and Eve s relationship with God and the
underlying meaning of their existence and the oedipal conflict that is portrayed. It suggests that maybe
the story is a tale told in order to understand why we exist and our personal purpose as well as to
recognize the effects of the authoritarian commands God expressed to Adam and Eve. The phrase
existence precedes essence as told by Sartre means, we exist first and then we do things that define
ourselves and live our lives in whatever way we choose. This is the case in, The Creation Story of
Adam and Eve , when God created Adam from the dust of the ground and Eve from one of Adam s
ribs. He brought them to life in the Garden of Eden, but it was up to them to create a purpose to exist.
Therefore, Adam and Eve s actions of disobedience were perhaps a way of God testing humankind by
showing them paradise (Garden of Eden) and what we were to lose if we d disobeyed him. God gave
Adam a garden to take care of, animals to name, and a wife for companionship. And they both got
banished from paradise for choosing to have the freedom of disobeying and as a result they have to be
responsible for their actions. For instance, in the Existentialism Lecture , it says that from an
existentialist point of view, We must choose what to do, where to go, and most importantly, what is
meaningful to us and why. With choice comes two related concepts: freedom and responsibility . Eve s
wrongful actions are the cause of why women to this day have had to fight harder than men to achieve
their place in society. As for Adam, his actions brought men to work for a living, which nothing in life
is easy, and you have to strive for it, it

Stanley Pinter s Film Character Analysis
Though the present is an outcome of past contemplations and actions, Pinter does not reveal the past
as he wants the audience to think about the various possible ways in which past can influence the
present. Furthermore by leaving the interpretations open to the audience, Pinter tries to portray that
historical archives as storehouses of narratives of the past, cannot be fully relied upon, as these are
narratives written in accordance to the dictates of those in power and as such are biased in their
interpretations. As the play proceeds, Stanley, in a long monologue, tells Meg of a concert, he once
gave. The concert was a great success and Stanley gives an account of it: STANLEY: (To himself.) I
had a unique touch. Absolutely unique. They ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The physical and mental torture meted out to Stanley leaves an indelible scar in his mind and gives
birth to his great fear against all forces that coalesce to form a collective force (they) which is
immensely powerful and at the same time devastating. This paranoia is dormant till the time Stanley is
in a comfortable, secure place and surrounded by familiar, innocuous people like Pete, Meg and Lulu.
But the arrival of the mysterious Goldberg and McCann, in the boarding house galvanizes the terror
and panic in the subconscious mind and intensifies it to the extent, that Stanley vents out his
frustration by madly beating the toy drum which he gets as a birthday present (though he denies it is
his birthday) from Meg. The savagery of Stanley s reaction on receiving the toy drum is also effected
by Stanley s despair at being treated like a child by Meg. A toy drum is usually gifted to a child. Meg
gifts Stanley a toy drum as he is a musician and also because she feels the child in Stanley will like the
gift. But what she fails to understand is that by being a mother surrogate to Stanley, she has made
Stanley dependent on her to an extent that is disliked by Stanley himself. Stanley s disgust for the
mother er Meg and his attempt to free himself from her (abject s) clutches is thus reflected in his
uncontrolled and wild beating of the drum, gifted by

Examples Of Historical Accuracy Of Saving Private Ryan
During World War Two a man name Captain John Miller takes his troops to find Private James Ryan.
During the movie, many people died on Omaha Beach. Historically, many people were injured and
died. Saving Private Ryan takes place during a horrific time, however there are still some historical
inaccuracies. How historically accurate is the movie Saving Private Ryan? Saving Private Ryan is
loosely based on a true story of the Niland Brothers. The Niland Brothers were four paratroopers
during World War Two. Two of them died, however for a period of time it was thought that only one
of them survived until it was discovered that the fourth was being held captive at a Japanese prisoner
of war camp. Even though the movie Saving Private Ryan is only ... Show more content on

In World War II, the Germans used what were called Tiger Tanks . The German tanks in the movie
were Soviet T 34 s. The wheels are different and are a key difference in the two as the wheels are
interweaving, however this was done because there is only one functional Tiger Tank left in the world
so the substituted with what they could. Another example of when the movie was not accurate was
when the Americans were fighting the Germans in Romello. During this, there were two Tiger tans,
however historically during this there were none in this specific location. All of the Tiger tanks were at
the Canadian and British fronts in Normandy. Another scene that contains an inaccuracy is when
Captain Miller gets shot and is about to detonate the bridge. During this he is sat up against a German
motorcycle. The motorcycle however is not actually German and is a Russian Ural M66. This specific
motorcycle was not introduced until the 1970 s, obviously not accurate as the motorcycle is from

Kidney Stones Effect
Kidney stones are little, hard mineral stores that frame inside your kidneys. The stones are made of
mineral and corrosive salts.
Kidney stones have numerous causes and can influence any piece of your urinary tract from your
kidneys to your bladder.
A kidney stone may not bring about manifestations until it moves around inside your kidney or goes
into your ureter. But,some side effects are Severe torment in the side and back, beneath the ribs,
torment that spreads to the lower stomach area and crotch, torment that comes in waves and changes
in power, torment on pee, pink, red or cocoa pee, overcast or putrid pee, queasiness and regurgitating,
and steady need to urinate.
Kidney stones regularly have no clear, single cause, albeit a few components may build your danger.
Kidney stones structure when your pee contains more gem framing substances, for example, calcium,
oxalate and uric corrosive than the liquid in your pee can weaken. In the meantime, your pee may
need substances that keep gems from staying together, making a perfect situation for kidney stones to

Essay on Alabama Moon by Watt Key
Soapstone: Alabama Moon
Characters:
In the novel Alabama Moon a boy named Moon is the main character. Moon is very independent
because throughout the story he does a lot of things on his own including living alone. On page 3 I
found out that he was ten years old because it said I was ten years old and he d taught me everything I
needed to know about living out in the forest. So this showed me that he knew how to live in his own
out in the forest and that he was ten years old which was pretty young to be living on his own out in
the forest. At first when Moon was scared and lonely without his dad he was aggressive with the other
characters. On page 27 Moon really showed his anger toward Mr.Abroscotto

I like living in the forest. I don t know where else I d live, but I don t wanna be by myself. We were
always by ourselves. We didn t ever see anybody except Mr.Abroscotto. This quote shows how Moon
is developing through the story. That is how the main character is developed through the story and
how the main character interacts with the other characters.
Ideas:
The main idea through the beginning of the story is Moon trying to survive in the forest by himself
and trying to fight off everyone. Then over time Moon realizes that he doesn t want to live in the
forest anymore and fight against anyone anymore. The conflict in the story happens a lot in the
beginning of the story because Moon is trying to stay hidden but then towards the end of the story he
doesn t want to be alone for the rest of his life and fight off everyone that tries to take him away or
help him. On page 3 he said Pap said he even figured I could whip somebody three times my size. He
wasn t worried about me. So that quote shows that he was thinking that he could just beat up anyone
that tried to take him away from the forest or anything else. But later in the story when he found out
that he couldn t just do that and get away with it he stopped doing it. On page 239 Moon was talking
to a policeman and the policeman said, You re not gonna bit me or nothin , are you? Nossir. I m not
aimin to try and whip up on anybody anymore. I don t aim to bust out of anywhere, either.

The Plastic Pink Flamingo Analysis
It s crazy to think how one of the greatest super powers in the world is home to probably the most
superficial, show off, easily influenced group of people in the world. From the very beginning
America has been a melting pot of adaptations with nothing in our culture, even our blood line, being
true American. We have this desire to show off to everyone around us about or trips and wealth
whether it be with t shirts and pictures or pink flamingos. In an essay entitled The Plastic Pink
Flamingo... Jennifer Price uses these 1950 s lawn ornaments as a way to demonstrate her views on
American culture. American s have turned something which we almost hunted...to extinction for the
sole purpose of plumes and meat into a symbol of our wealth and pizzazz. Price s underlying message
beginning that we are shear hypocrites. This isn t the only thing that we have done this one. The
American slave trade, which was a good idea to a lot of people at one point in time, was a horrific
offense (which it was) to those same groups of people 100 years later. America is so quick to turn their
beliefs and stands into whatever is the right side of history at the time even if it contradicts something
they previously believed. As long as whatever they are believing gives them the opportunity to gloat
and show off to everyone else.
When the flamingo frenzy splashed into the 1950 s it flew into a generation who had just gained a
whole new sense of wealth. The middle class had never had this

Henry Selick Vs. The Nightmare Before Christmas
The Nightmare Before Christmas directed by Henry Selick and written by Tim Burton is a movie I
consider to be one of the best. In this film Jack, who is a large skeleton and also the king of
Halloween, discovers the holiday of Christmas and decides that he will become Santa Claws to give
the big guy a break and prove that he could do it better. Another reason Jack did this is because he is
tired of Halloween and wants to make a major change in his life since being the Pumpkin King is no
longer fulfilling for him. The Nightmare Before Christmas, is considered to fall under the film genre
of children s movies. This genre in particular is an excessively broad genre as children s movies have
numerous topics and styles. Another children s movie ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the most important things of a good film is to have a satisfying ending for the viewer. Without
giving any spoilers away, The Nightmare Before Christmas has an ending that will leave you feeling
good instead of leaving with a bad taste in your mouth. Also it s important for a good film to be
engaging throughout its entirety. The Nightmare Before Christmas is a story that can keep any viewer
sucked into its fantasy world because the story never has a dull moment. Another important part of
making a good movie is that the story line is original and not overdone. The Nightmare Before
Christmas is a hundred percent original and is the only movie that has done this story line to date
which makes it not only unique but worth watching. Good acting is another thing that could make or
break a movie when it comes to being good. While The Nightmare Before Christmas doesn t have
actors actually on the screen it has voice actors who made sure that their voices conveyed the
emotions of the scenes throughout the movie. Relatable characters are a key point of any good movie
because the viewers often want to be able to put themselves into the movie. Jack Skellington is a guy
who seems to be stuck in a rut and I think that most people have been at that place before and can
understand wanting to branch out and try something new. Another thing that makes movies stand

Robert Hayden, The Middle Passage Essay
Robert Hayden was an American poet and educator who also served as a consultant in the Library of
Congress from 1976 1978. He was born and raised in a poor Detroit neighborhood, Paradise Valley.
Growing up was emotionally devastating for Hayden as he spent time living at home with his parents
and eventually moving in with foster parents next door. He was unable to participate in sports growing
up due to impaired vision, so he spent the majority of his time reading. He went on to graduate high
school in 1932, attended Detroit City College and later moved on to the University of Michigan in
pursuit of a master s degree. Much of Hayden s poetry reflects the Harlem Renaissance, pays close
attention to social criticism and uses racial and cultural material to explore the African American
presence in American history, while not pointing out what is singularly black . Hayden s poetry began

Martin Scorsese s Film, Taxi Driver Essay

Vietnam veteran Travis Bicklea finds that his life has been turned upside down after returning America
from the battle field. He suffers from the insomnia and sense of isolation, which leads him to take a

prostitutes, adulterous husbands and wenchers. Since Travis has promised the cab company that he
will drive anywhere, at anytime, his likelihood of seeing the best of human nature is fairly slim. So, he
tries to create an extra occupational life for himself. He befriends Betsy, a beautiful girl working at a

Especially in a scene where Bickle saves a man¡¯s life from a robbery where he gets away with
murder as the clerk would beat up the dead man¡¯s body. Though it might have seem gruesome at the
time, Scorsese doesn¡¯t pull back where he doesn¡¯t give any clear answer of Bickle, in the terms of
becoming normal. This is by far some top notch directing from one of NYC¡¯s greatest visionaries.
In Taxi Driver, Scorsese manages his camera angles and editing to emphasize Travis seeing the world
through glass or mirrors, especially the windshield and rear view mirror of the taxi, through which all
major characters enter Taxi Driver: Betsy through the panes of an all glass office; Palantine through
his rear view mirror; and Iris and Sport in a fleeting glance in his mirror. As Travis meets with a black
market gun dealer, and in this scene the weapon literally becomes the organ of perception. Scorsese
situates his camera on Travis arm as that arm takes the weapon and slowly pans it across the window
looking down on the street below. Finally, in the scene which has made Travis Bickle a cinematic icon
( Are you talking to me? ), Travis looks into his mirror, challenges imaginary adversaries, and draws
his various weapons in assault. The ambiguity of the image is poignant: Travis looks into a mirror and
makes a self destructive gesture foreshadowing his attempted suicide at the climax of the film, and
Travis peers through the looking glass and

The Importance Of Football In The World
By the second half of the Nineteenth Century, the first club and sports federation was established (
football history , 2013). The enthusiasm for football was quickly contagious from Great Britain to
other countries, thanks to the population and urbanization process resulted from the Industrial
Revolution (Spampinato, 2004). There was an urgent need to build a facility could welcome a high
number of spectators and fans (Santo, Mildner, 2010), formed the awareness of sports importance to
individuals and community, to produce a new age of stadia at five sequential steps of progression.

In order to deal with this issue, as well as stadia were equipped to welcome television broadcasting
systems; stadia were equipped with facilities to attract a wide range of fans (Spampinato, 2004). Seats
had better view angles, stands became roofed, and a higher number of toilet facilities, and beverage
outlets in the stands were provided. That was the start of the concept of fan zones (Fig.8), especially
by 1970 s, when the market saw the appearance of the specialized and dedicated sports architecture
practice (Santo, Mildner, 2010), which produced new image of fans facilities with amenities (greater
revenue, more luxury suites, and higher quality finishes) (Fig.9). Moreover, there were artificial
lighting installations to ensure night broadcasting. A common element of that age, the stadia concept
was an introverted element in the city, although their inner facilities were a comfortable inside yet
anonymous outside, missing both indoor and outdoor safety (Spampinato, 2004).

Reasons To Die In A Zombie Apocalypse
In a zombie apocalypse, the first thing I would do is find a shelter that can suit my needs and protect
me from the weather/attacks/raids/zombies. If you live in a crowded area first hide then in the next

possible. If you survive the first day then your chances of survival has been greatly enhanced. When
the zombies first came the reason why most people died on the first day was because they were in the

Difference Between Pre And Prehistory
1. History vs. Prehistory
a. What is prehistory and how is this concept or term defined?
ANSWER: Prehistory is the era before people could write. It is the time and events that happened
before the history has written down and led to the development of something. [ ] Others defined
prehistory as from the creation of the universe, while some refer to it as time since the development of
life on earth. But others mainly define prehistory as the period of time beginning with the appearance
of human beings. Basically, prehistoric period is the era when the existence of human beings began. [ ]
b. What is the history of the term (and etymology) as well as the discipline that covers history? How
did it begin and what were the reasons for its beginning?
ANSWER: The Ancient Greek word ἱστορ ία (historia) which history originates mean inquiry,
knowledge so obtained, information, an account of one s inquiry, narrative and from Latin historia

Revision: She implements anaphora along with asyndeton in the phrase men increase, women

literary devices, Kelley is able to identify the overarching issue of women s suffrage while
enlightening her audience as she expresses that once women are seen as strong, competent individuals,
then, and only then, will there be a respect for the American youth.
Reflection: In the following sentence, I am able to expand upon a major topic of discussion for

Cost Descriptors
Introduction
This paper will clarify the various terms used to describe costs, such as fixed, variable, direct, indirect,
and sunk, giving examples of each to help a good understanding of current budget discussions. These
concepts will help HR Management with an understanding of making effective budget decisions for
its company, since they need to have clear and full knowledge of basic accounting language to grasp
the concepts of the various accounting terms.
The term cost can be defined as the amount to be paid for products or services or a required payment
for purchasing products and services used as a constant during a period. Costs can have different
definitions, based on what kind of use it is required. They can be considered fixed ... Show more

The profitability is not high, but at least, the fixed costs will be paid and maybe some profitability will
be achieved.
Opportunity Costs are used to measure the costs of the resources. They can be defined as the cost of an
alternative that must be forgone in order to pursue a certain action, or the benefits received by taking
an alternative action, or, still, the difference in return between a chosen investment and one that was
passed up. As example, the benefit of studying a MBA and spending money on it or save the money
for future expenses, or better saying, using the money to pay expenses in daily basis.
Conclusion
Various terms are used to describe costs. Having an understanding of these terms will provide a better
insight to managers and companies on making budget decisions, efficiently. Not only the ones
described above should be considered, but also all types of costs related to the decision in effect.
Efficient managers will considered all aspects related to the analyses in question.

The Effect Of Integrin s Vary From The Type Of Protein Essay
The effects of integrin s vary from the type of protein they are and how they affect a certain part of the
body. They are usually surface receptors that will interact with extracellular matrix. There is a family
of alpha and beta classes which would usually form heterodimers. They are used for adhesion
purposes most of the time and can also transduce a biochemical signal into or out of the cell. This
process is called bidirectional, where the can transmit information from in and out of a cell. There are
different structures that integrin s play a role in. Integrin s can bind to a ligand, where it will form a
complex with a biological molecule that will usually serve as a purpose. They can go through a
process called activation, where they would have a conformational change of the receptor. They can
also trigger a cascade effect, which can change a receptors shape. CD 36 is a type of integrin protein,
which is found mostly in the human. It usually binds to collagen, thrombospondin, anionic
phospholipids and more. They are also glycosylated, and are an integrin plasma membrane protein that
vary in a family that bind to lipid receptors. It functions in recognizing different lipoproteins, fatty
acid transports, and cell matrix interactions. This integrin is very diverse and deals mostly with fatty
acid structures.
(Figure 1). This figure shows an example of OxLDL on a macrophage from the CD 36 receptor.

being punished. God did not mind Habakkuk s concerns and was gracious enough to answer him.
Habakkuk saw many sins that Israel and other nations were committing and was greatly concerned.

The Approach to Nature of Descartes and White Essay
The Approach to Nature of Descartes and White The approach to nature which René Descartes takes is
distinct from that of Gilbert White. Descartes and White have similar key methods of examining
nature. It is mainly in Descartes deductive reasoning and beliefs that lead him to the method of
approaching nature internally (mind and body). Conversely, White s keen observances, inductive
reasoning, and appreciation for his surroundings lead him to the method of investigating the external
nature (Selborne). Although ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this hierarchy, God stands as some more perfect being on which [humans] [depend] (Descartes, 26).
Humans are placed in the centre, because God grants us the ability to reason the ability to distinguish
what is true from what is false (Descartes, 22). Below us rest animals, having no reason. Truth in
nature therefore, must not come from animals since they are lesser beings, but rather, it must be found
within humans.
White finds appreciation for the external nature which Descartes considers to be less certain
(Descartes, 28). While Descartes takes a rational approach, White takes a scientific, yet literary means
toward nature. He observes nature ardently, noting animals modes of life housing, reproduction,
communications, transportation, and physical appearance. His ability to personify these animals
creates a meeting place for wild life and human feeling (White, xvii). In his recordings for example,
White observes the swallow s mode of life. It builds its nest, often within barns and out houses against
the rafters (White, 156). The swallow lays from four to six white eggs, dotted with red specks; and
brings about her first brood about the last week in June, or the first week of July (White, 157). The
swallow is a delicate songster, and in soft sunny weather sings

Taking Water And Marketing Something That Should Be A...
California is going through a very difficult period right now because of this drought and there are still
people who think that Nestle taking water and marketing something that should be a public right is
okay. For example, people like the Chief Executive Officer of Nestle waters, Peter Brabeck Letmath,
recently said that water is a food like any other and it should have a price value because it is not a
human right (Bacher). Pumping water out of California s water sources while in an exceptional
drought is outrageous. Many people might believe that it is okay for Nestle to pump water because it
is for the people and they have the permission to do so, but at what cost? This constant pumping has
already hurt the ecosystems and its animals ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, the many jobs offered by Nestle mean more production of plastic bottles creating more
waste and more pollution. As I interviewed one of my classmates, Tiffany Xiong, she brought up the
point about how some people might say that water bottles are good because they provide water access
for when there are no other options or when access to clean water is lost. Even though the bottled
water might provide water in times of crisis, relying too much on bottled water can eventually lead up
to the same crisis that other disadvantaged regions are facing. Bottled water might be convenient and
fitting for most people, but it is still very expensive and corrupt compared to tap water. Also, bottled
water companies have great impacts of producing and distributing millions of gallons of water on
global warming. Many cities of California are suffering from the devastating drought and Nestles
pumping and Sacramento is amongst the top.
In the state of California, the city of Sacramento is feeling the outcome of the water pumping by
Nestle, as well as the drought. Sacramento has reached its Fourth year of this record braking drought,
but this is not stopping Nestle from pumping water into water bottles and selling it to the public for
profit. Nestle water has pumped approximately eighty million gallons of water out of the aquifers in
Sacramento during this historic drought (Bacher). A lot of people in Sacramento

The Sexual Orientation Of Parents Essay
Article 1: Stacey, J., Biblarz, T. J. (2001). (How) does the sexual orientation of parents matter?
American Sociological Review, 66(2), 159 183.
The goal of this study was to dispute the negative heterosexism perceptions attached to the
development of children with parents who identify as gay and lesbian. The authors focused on the
analysis of previous research findings, comparing the outcomes of the children from heterosexual
single mothers and homosexual parents, particularly lesbian mothers. These studies explored the
relationship between homophobia, the sexual orientation of the parents and the outcome of the child;
in addition to the influence on sexual preferences and well being of the children.
A critical finding from this study, was the belief that the discrimination surrounding homophobia is the
core reason as to why the concern behind sexual orientation of parents exists at all. This article found
a stronger correlation between the children, specifically daughters raised by lesbian mothers, and the
absence of typical gender identities associated with their behaviour, chosen activities and aspirations
for the future. These results suggest children of lesbian parenting are not forced to restrict themselves
to certain gender associated roles. When examining the sexual preferences and behaviour of the
children from both households, they found the children of lesbian mothers were more open to
considering a same sex relationship in their future. Although

The New Deal National Socialism Summary
In John A. Garraty s The New Deal, National Socialism, and the Great Depression , Garraty relates the
Civilian Conservation Corps, or CCC, to nazi work camps, saying the two parallel each other as a tool
to curb unemployment with a military education at their core1. However, the comparison of these
programs is unfeasible as the CCC s mission and methods of carrying out said mission were far less
sinister and much more beneficial to its volunteers. The CCC prided itself on working for the common
good, and the benefits it provided to those who partook. Relating this program to the harsh, deplorable
camps established to build an army for hitler is obscene when looked at from a rational standpoint.
The effect the CCC had on the US is important ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However this is once again untrue, as volunteers enjoyed many benefits in their time of service. The
CCC provided workers with all the essentials they needed in their time at the camp, be it food,
clothing, and shelter. This allowed workers to send the money they earned home to their families,
around $25 $30 a month7, rather then having to spend it during their stay. This payment was a huge
incentive to teenagers who wanted to help their families, as they could now help pay for their families
expenses and take their own needs out of the picture. Camp life in the CCC also incentivized out of
work teens, as personal accounts from volunteers portray a life of both work and play. Keith Hufford,
a teen who enrolled in the CCC, describes some of the activities workers would take part in during
their free time; Before long, we were having inter camp musical entertainments, boxing bouts,
impromptu spelling bees, and quite often, interesting plays and sketches 8. This jubilant depiction

The Necessary And Proper Clauses
The Necessary and Proper clause goes by many names and known for causing many disputes
throughout the United States in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. What the clause states is that
The Congress shall have Power ...To make all Laws which shall be necessary and proper for carrying
into Execution the foregoing Powers, and all other Powers vested by this Constitution in the
Government of the United States, or in any Department or Officer thereof (Document A). This means
that the United States Congress possesses the abilities to create any and all laws that are essential for
the Congress s power to be demonstrated. This goes for other powers stated in the constitution.
However, some individuals find flaws in this clause, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Contrary to a common belief, this was never put into place for Congress so that it may perform evil
deeds. In fact, part of the clause itself prevents it from doing so in the first place with the definition of
the word proper. However, this was either overlooked or was not perceived as the truth, and began
many disagreements. Some as major as stating that the clause was put into place so that Congress has
the power to do whatever it pleased, to those that are trivial in comparison. Namely James Madison s
note that the United States national government is not truly a national one since its jurisdiction extends
to certain enumerated objects only, and leaves to the several States a residuary and inviolable
sovereignty over all other objects (Document E). Other arguments began over topics that came into
existence because of the Necessary and Proper clause, e.g., the national bank. President Andrew
Jackson disliked the national bank because it benefitted those who were already wealthy and did
nothing for the poor (Document J). This and other reasons led the president to veto the renewal of the
national bank in an attempt to limit the role of the national government, which influenced the
depiction of him as a tyrant in document K. Even though it is the basis of many political altercations

The Causes Behind The Atrocities Experienced During World...
When evaluating the causes behind the atrocities experienced during World War II, many reasons for
these events can be found in the conditions occurring beforehand. Beyond this, many of these causes
can be applicable contributions to each World War. In terms of cause, World War II can be considered
an inevitable continuation of the first World War. It erupted due to Hitler s extreme desire for
expansion and hostile foreign policy, war was immediately declared upon German militarization of
Poland. However, the expectation for global warfare had been longstanding before Mussolini and

Moving further, Germans began challenging their current political structure, as a large majority of
civilians now rejected the seemingly weak authority of the Weimar Republic. With the decrease in
faith towards a strong democratic republic, a desire for a powerful nationalistic leader such as Adolf
Hitler arose. Hitler and the Nazi Party were able to quickly spread their own extremist beliefs through
the rising German nationalism. For instance, Hitler utilized the appeal of uniting all Germans in
Europe in a singular nation, then using this unification to strengthen German desire for expansion and
militarization. He desired the power colonize and control Eastern territories, an establishment of
complete power demonstrated previously by imperial powers such as Britain. However, Hitler and the
Nazis also maintained a sense of Aryan racial superiority, believing all other races were inferior to the
Germans, especially Jews. They called for a complete ethnic cleansing, thus resulting in the
Holocaust. As horrific as these beliefs were, they were made possible through a remarkable faith in
Hitler and the Nazi Party. The extremist actions taken within Nazi Germany can be traced back to a
desire for nationalism due to the results of the Treaty of Versailles and diminishing of faith in a failing
democratic system.

A Christian World Viewpoint
Having never considered much about world views until after visiting a Christian world view camp, I
wanted to know more about mine. As a Christian, naturally I would have a Christian world view, but I
did not really know what that meant. I did not think much about the nature of God, or man, or even the
cause of evil and suffering. Although I did not doubt my Christianity, I only doubted my knowledge of
it, and ability to defend the Christian faith. I knew the root of all suffering came from sin, and that
since Adam and Eve sinned, all man is burdened with sin. However, people are able to have a loving
relationship with God if we trust in Jesus.

For God so loved the world that he gave his only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish,
but have everlasting life (John 3:16).
Then the LORD God said, Behold, the man has become like one of Us, knowing good and evil; and
now, he might stretch out his hand, and take also from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever
(Genesis 3:22). Although Adam and Eve sinned, from that sin, they gained the knowledge of good and
evil. Like sinful nature, morals are also passed down through the generations. Having morals cause
people to determine what is right and wrong, and set laws to prevent people from committing crimes.
Obviously, murdering someone is wrong. Most everyone will agree with that statement, because
everyone has morals.
Evil and suffering are essentially caused by sin. When a person sins, they turn away from God and His
will, dwelling in evil. Had man never sinned, there would never have been any evil, and there would
never have been any suffering. Once Jesus comes again, all evil and suffering will be purged from this
world, and God will create a new heaven and earth. Christians suffer just like all other people, except
our suffering is necessary and something we can bear otherwise God would not have allowed it. God
does not cause suffering, He prevents it. If He does not prevent it, that means that we are able to bear
it, and it would make us stronger in our faith. Therefore, in order to keep me from becoming

Compared with lithium, Depakote doesn t have all the bad side effects when properly administered.

Annotated Bibliography On Nuclear Weapons
United States[edit]
Main articles: Nuclear weapons and the United States and United States and weapons of mass
destruction
The United States developed the first atomic weapons, during World War II in cooperation with the
United Kingdom and Canada as part of the Manhattan Project, out of the fear that Nazi Germany
would develop them first. It tested the first nuclear weapon in 1945 ( Trinity ), and remains the only
country to have used nuclear weapons against an enemy state in warfare, devastating the Japanese
cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It was the first nation to develop the hydrogen bomb, testing an
experimental prototype in 1952 ( Ivy Mike ) and a deployable weapon in 1954 ( Castle Bravo ).
Throughout the Cold War it continued to modernize and enlarge its nuclear arsenal, but from 1992 on
has been involved primarily in a program of Stockpile stewardship.[28][29][30] The U.S. nuclear

The weapon was developed as a deterrent against both the United States and the Soviet Union. Two
years later, China had a fission bomb capable of being put onto a nuclear missile. It tested its first

shortest fission to fusion development known in history).[40] The country is currently thought to have
had a stockpile of around 240 warheads, though because of the limited information available,
estimates range from 100 to 400.[41][42][43] China is the only NPT nuclear weapon state to give an

Utilitarianism By John Stuart Mill
Analysis Paper 2 In the essay Utilitarianism by John Stuart Mill, he explains his support for
utilitarianism and argues any misconceptions of it. In his essay he talks about the difference between
higher and lower pleasures and what significance they have in his utilitarian moral theory. His theory
is based on the rule that actions are right in proportion as they tend to promote happiness, wrong as
they tend to produce the reverse of happiness. Many people experience different kinds of pleasure and
he talks about how they can differ in quality and quantity. Mills talks about higher and lower pleasures
and what they mean. Higher and lower pleasures are two things that bring someone pleasure but
pleasure one brings greater pleasure than pleasure 2. Although pleasure 2 brings the person happiness,
pleasure 1 has a greater affect on their happiness and the person will always choose pleasure 1. Even
is the quantity is greater in pleasure two they will still choose pleasure one because of the quality.
Typically when someone experiences the higher pleasure they will not choose the lower pleasure
when given the option. Once people have experienced a higher pleasure they will never want to go
back to choosing the lower pleasure except in extreme circumstances. For example someone might get
pleasure from eating McDonalds, but one day they decide to go to chipotle instead and find out that
they like it much better than McDonalds. The next time that person is hungry and having to

long period of time is a literature goldmine, which demands to be studied. There is a element of
surprise when the author or in this case authors create more than just a descriptive narrative. Together
they alluded to each other, enhanced each other s works, and created a world that seems to never end.
One might simply think that to write a story within a story is simply a device to make a narrative
interesting. It is rather a way of teaching the characters and the audience how not to repeat history
through an allegorical framework established in the prologue and through the extended
anthropomorphism of in The Tale of the Ox and the Donkey. The Prologue is perhaps one of the most
daunting stories of The Thousand and One Nights. The depiction of a furious king ending the innocent
lives of women he had married and bedded is not exactly comforting. However, it does form a basis
for the allegorical framework found within the text. King Shahrayar and his brother, King Shahzaman

What Role Does Fate Play In The Life Of Oedipus
Oedipus the King by Sophocles, emphasizes the role of fate in the world s everyday life, but
specifically in the life of Oedipus. The events that occur in Oedipus the King show how the
relationship between Oedipus and his fate are inseparable. His quest starting with fleeing from his
foretold fate becomes more difficult to digest when his fate catches up to him in his race to salvation.
Through the confabulation between Tiresias and Oedipus, Sophocles compares fate being told by
Tiresias to Oedipus with the life he is living.
Thinking he had liberated himself from his faith, the contrary establishes when Oedipus unfolds the
mystery of the man who murdered the former King. The riddled words of the oracle unfold when
Oedipus realizes that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Through the dialogue between Oedipus and a shepherd, Oedipus realizes that he is the killer by stating
that, I stand revealed at least cursed in my birth, cursed in marriage, cursed in the lives I cut down
with these hands (Oedipus the King, Sophocles, 1305 1310).Through these words, Oedipus
characterizes his emotions through his words and not through his actions. Through Sophocles s play in
his time, he states that Oedipus is an instrument being of great use by fate. In the play, Sophocles
emphasizes on the fate that has been

A Room Of One s Own And Terry Eagleton Analysis
There are many different theories you can look for when reading literature. You have five of Terry
Eagleton s theories which are reader s response, feminism, psychological view, and historical, and
formalism. There is Nietzsche s theory where he believes everything is a metaphor, everything can be
interpreted differently by the reader. Emerson s theory is transidlism and existentialism. Transidlism is
when someone will accept that there are miracles in the world. Existentialism is when someone doesn
t believe there are miracles. The last theory is the chaos theory where everything is connected to
everything, one thing sets off a chain reaction, and the whole world is affected by it. You can see these
different theories in Virginia Woolf s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, this is how she thought the life for women would be like in the sixteenth century, any
women born with a talent would end up being laughed up, mocked and ending their lives like the
fictional character Judith. A highly gifted girl who had tried to use her gift for poetry would have been
so thwarted and hindered by other people, so tortured and pulled asunder by her own contrary
instincts, that she must have lost her health and sanity to a certainty (Woolf).
Finally you notice Emerson s theory of transidlism which is someone who believes in miracles. Woolf
believes that there can be miracles for women. For my belief is that if we live another century or so I
am taking of the common life which is the real life and not of the little separate lives which we live as
individuals and have five hundred a year each of us and rooms of our own; if we have the habit of
freedom and the courage to write exactly what we think; if we escape a little from the common sitting
room and see human beings not always in their relation to each other but in relation to reality; and the
sky, too, and the trees or whatever it may be in themselves; if we look past Milton s hogey, for no
human being should shut out the view; if we face the fact, for it is a fact, that there is no arm to cling
to, but that we go alone and that our relation is to the world of reality and not only to the world of men
and women, then the opportunity will come and the dead poet

Summary Of Bonanza Episode Day Of Reckoning
Personal Analysis of Bonanza Episode Day of Reckoning I found in this episode countless
connections to what we have been learning in class in regards to the Native Americans and their
encounters with white men. In this particular episode, I observed examples of hostility between both
the white man and Native Americans. Similar to what we had learned in class about the constant
hostility that was present with many white men and Native Americans due to the white man
essentially taking over the Native American s land. I observed how the Native Americans slowly
became like the white man once he was brought into his home. This again reminded me of what we
had learned in class about how Native Americans were encouraged to take up farming, wear clothes
like white men, chop their long hair off to have it short representing the hair of the white men, cook
and prepare food like the white man and live in a home like the white man. These encouragements and
what the white man may have seen as examples of kindness and hospitality were actually uprooting
the Native Americans from their own culture. This is especially true for Matsou, who feels very
strongly about not taking up ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I saw this especially with Hatoya as she often prayed and spoke about her faith. She explains to Ben
about why she has a bible in her home, I lived with a man of God and his wife for three years . I felt
after she said this to Ben, he felt he could actually trust Hatoya and Matsou, I think he felt they shared
a connection on an important topic. This emphasis on religion was another topic we discussed in class.
We learned about how the white man s faith was heavily pushed upon the Native American people.
They were encouraged to abandon their own faith and believe solely in what the white man believed
in. This disconnected Native Americans from their culture as they had their own faith that they felt
strongly connected

Popular Support In Julius Caesar Essay
Popular support and the distribution of power are two intertwining concepts that are prominent in
Nicolo Machiavelli s 16th century treatise, The Prince, and Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare, of
the same era. While Machiavelli s treatise served to provide a practical guide to a reigning prince and
Shakespeare s play served to entertain an Elizabethan audience, both composers examine different
perspectives of popular support and the distribution of power.
The Prince similarly suggests that popular support is essential in achieving power, but prioritises the
importance of gaining support from the citizens over the support from nobles. Machiavelli critically
analyses the advantages and disadvantageous concerning monarchy and popular support ... Show more

Caesar s power is distributed amongst characters including Antony, Brutus and Octavian, and as such,
his own individual power is weakened, giving Brutus and the conspirators the opportunity to rebel
against him. Brutus power is conveyed in Cassius speech in Act 1 Scene 2, where he utilises rhetorical
questions including, Why would that name [Caesar] be sounded more than yours? and sarcasm by
referring Caesar as Immortal , to undermine Caesar s authority as a ruler. However, while Brutus and
the conspirators successfully murder Caesar, Antony and Octavian emerge as the victors at the Battle
at Philippi, suggesting that ultimately Caesar s spirit and rule lives in the noblemen who support him.
The recurring supernatural imagery of Caesar s spirit in both Brutus tent prior to the battle in Act 4
Scene 3 and on the battlefield conveyed by Brutus in Act 5 Scene 5, suggests that Caesar s spirit not
only metaphorically perpetuates but also literally appears in front of Brutus. The fact that the play is
named after him despite his death early in the play and not after Brutus, further enhances the idea that
the distribution of power from the leader to his noblemen allows the leader s rule to continue beyond

Juvenile Delinquency Has Increased Throughout The Years
INTRODUCTION
Juvenile Delinquency has increased throughout the years. In 2008 the United States police arrested
about 2.11 million juveniles. Juvenile arrest rates had increased in 2005 and again in 2006. Data show
increases in some offense categories but declines in most. Most changes being less than 10% in either
direction. According to the data arson at 47% is one of the biggest crimes that juveniles commit.
Following are robbery at 27%, burglary at 27%, and property crimes at 26%. Juveniles are creating
more problems for parents, schools, and communities. In 2007 juvenile courts dealt with a large
amount of juvenile delinquents. About 4,600 cases per day were being treated at the courts
(Puzzanchera, Charles).
One main reasons for the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Research has shown that from a family of four or more children are more likely to become juvenile
delinquents than those who come from a three or less children homes.
This research is important because understanding what makes a juvenile delinquent is necessary to
know. Parents can be educated on what is affecting their teen to contribute to delinquent behavior. The
family structure has been avoided by many citizens. Educating the public on the family structure can
make a different in a teen s life.
Social Scientist started to examine the family structure when they began to notice a high divorce rate
that began in the 1960s. They wanted to know how divorce was affecting children mentally and if they
were more likely to commit crimes than those who had both parents. Social scientist studies began to
show that children who come from divorced parents tend to have more academic, behavioral, and
emotional problems. When parents decide to divorce or separate, the child or children begin to stress
because they know that everything is going to change and this can cause fear among the child. Studies
have shown that a few children begin to adapt to their parents separation. However, more than one
third of children were clinically depressed, failing in school, had low social communication, were
unable to sleep and eat, and hoped that one day their parents would get back together. Many of them

The Strike of the Eastover Mine Workers in the Movie,...
The Academy Award winning movie Harlan County USA is an emotional depiction of the events that
surrounded the strike of the Eastover Mine workers in 1973. Barbara Kopple directs a moving film
and gives an up close in depth look into the struggle for a livable wage, healthcare that covers the
ailments that arise from mine work and safer working conditions. While all of these were issues raised
by the striking workers; they were also striking for respect as human beings, an upgrade to the only
way of life they knew, and hope for their future. Most men understood that their family s destiny was
deeply rooted in coal and since leaving was unlikely, they would be best served by allowing the
United Mine Workers of America (UMW) to represent them instead of the company friendly Southern
Labor Union (SLU). Which side are you on is a song written to explain that the issue is as simple as
black or white, left or right and right or wrong. There is no doubt which side the film is created from
and the position is justified. Kopple makes no apology for the one sidedness of her documentary.
Kopple said We re pro union, this is a story about the union, and this is the way it is from our point of
view. The grievances of the miners were just and needed to be addressed. She does an excellent job of
creating sympathy and empathy for the deserving strikers and their families. To understand why the
miners decided to strike is to understand Appalachia. A young boy growing up in Harlan

Moral Nihilism In The Unicorn

Iris Murdoch (1919 1999), the Irish British novelist, moralistandphilosopher, is an influential figure in
twentieth century European literature. Because

supporters of philosophy s turn to literature (FlooraRuokonen 77). According to Murdoch, writing
fiction is essentially an ethical activity. Her fictions andphilosophicalessays are influenced by Simone
Weil, from whom she borrows the concept of attention , and by Plato, under whose ethical theory she
claims to fight all that she considers to be the different forms of moral nihilism (Goodyer 217).

finding the situation unromantic, and herself a spectacle for the locals, satirizes any such

The Street Was Paved With Large Concrete Tiles
The street was paved with large concrete tiles, laid in a peculiar fashion, with some etched with cracks
over the surface. The street lights dimly illuminate my path as my eyes struggle to adjust to the dark
and as I walk, I feel a presence behind me. I began to walk faster, and then the presence felt closer so I
ran, faster and faster turning every corner I see. I m not making the right decisions, I m panicking, I
can t calm down. I can hear their footsteps chasing after me, their chunky clothing hitting their body,
blood rushing through their angry emotions. I m scared, someone please come and save me. I came
across an alleyway, it was a close gap between two old apartments, and it was dark and uninviting.

felt a smirk creeping up onto the man s face. I tried pushing up against the man s palm, but there was
no use, so I rapidly grabbed his wrist from behind and pulled him down. In a split second I pushed his
hand away and rolled out before the body could squash me. You son of a I ran mid sentence in the

Anglo Saxon Kings
The Anglo Saxon time period was often characterized as harsh and dangerous. With many waging
wars between different groups of people, a strong leader needs to emerge in order to protect the
citizens and their home. As a result, many of the kings that come to be were often times war heros.
They were also really strategic about fighting and they has a large group of supporters. Also, they
would dedicate their time and preach their religion. Lastly, after their death, their legacy still remains
in this world, and people appreciate them for doing good to their society. A few examples of the kings
during the Anglo Saxon time period are King Cnut, Alfred the Great, and King Harold. Many of them

His father planned to conquer all of England; however, he shortly died after, leaving all of his army
under Cnut s control. Having to be a leader at a young age, Cnut became experienced and educated.
As time went by however, their army was expelled by King Aethelred. Later on, Aethelred s successor,
Edmund, created a treaty with Cnut, but he died shortly after. It was this time that Cnut found himself
as the first king of England during the beginning of Anglo Saxon time period. He slowly gained fame
and was recognized by many because of his powers and legacy for no English king ever had such
wide ranging authority. For he was at once the lord of all Denmark, of all England, of all Norway, and
also of Sweden (_____). This was the first time that England was under control by one King. With
such a large of land under his command, it is a surprise that he could reign all of it flawlessly.
However, it also proves how powerful his army is, for invasions are useless against him since he
stationed his men at strategic locations. He managed to protect his people for many years and, as a
result, their communities were able to flourish. Many have also claimed that he was so great that he
could command the tides of the sea to go back. Even though this is exaggerated in order to make him
seem more powerful, it makes people wonder how strong he was to be appraised to that level. King
Cnut was also

The Most Important Importance Of Plants In Our Society
The importance of plants is often overlooked by the general public. They don t realize when they eat,
wear, or build something that none of it would be possible without plants. Complex life itself only
exists thanks to the evolution of plants. Throughout this essay, I hope to highlight some of the most
important aspects of plants including their ecological roles, historical roles, source of food, medicinal
uses, spices, erosion control, soil contribution, and many others. The list of plant importance could go
on and on forever, but these seem to play the most pertinent role in our society. Plants provide many
products that benefit other organisms and their environments. Perhaps one of the most important roles
of the plant is photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is the process by which light energy is converted into a
usable form. Of this energy obtained by the plant, ten percent is passed on through each level of the
trophic chain, and the rest is given off as heat. This theory is known as the 10% Law. The process of
photosynthesis also consumes carbon dioxide, and releases oxygen as a byproduct. This is arguably
one of the most important functions of plants, because oxygen is such a vital ingredient to life on
Earth. With their oxygen producing capabilities, plants have been coined as, The Lungs of the Earth .
Another benefit that plants provide to their ecosystems that has only been discovered since an increase
in human pollution is their detoxification potential. Many plants

  • 3. The Creation Story Of Adam And Eve Analysis By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return . In The Creation Story of Adam and Eve , those are the words God tells Adam and Eve when they failed to obey God s only rule, not eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Throughout the story we follow their relationship with God, in the events that began with their creation and ended in their exile. Therefore, in my sole opinion based on The Creation of Adam and Eve , the story depicts Adam and Eve s relationship with God and the underlying meaning of their existence and the oedipal conflict that is portrayed. It suggests that maybe the story is a tale told in order to understand why we exist and our personal purpose as well as to recognize the effects of the authoritarian commands God expressed to Adam and Eve. The phrase existence precedes essence as told by Sartre means, we exist first and then we do things that define ourselves and live our lives in whatever way we choose. This is the case in, The Creation Story of Adam and Eve , when God created Adam from the dust of the ground and Eve from one of Adam s ribs. He brought them to life in the Garden of Eden, but it was up to them to create a purpose to exist. Therefore, Adam and Eve s actions of disobedience were perhaps a way of God testing humankind by showing them paradise (Garden of Eden) and what we were to lose if we d disobeyed him. God gave Adam a garden to take care of, animals to name, and a wife for companionship. And they both got banished from paradise for choosing to have the freedom of disobeying and as a result they have to be responsible for their actions. For instance, in the Existentialism Lecture , it says that from an existentialist point of view, We must choose what to do, where to go, and most importantly, what is meaningful to us and why. With choice comes two related concepts: freedom and responsibility . Eve s wrongful actions are the cause of why women to this day have had to fight harder than men to achieve their place in society. As for Adam, his actions brought men to work for a living, which nothing in life is easy, and you have to strive for it, it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Stanley Pinter s Film Character Analysis Though the present is an outcome of past contemplations and actions, Pinter does not reveal the past as he wants the audience to think about the various possible ways in which past can influence the present. Furthermore by leaving the interpretations open to the audience, Pinter tries to portray that historical archives as storehouses of narratives of the past, cannot be fully relied upon, as these are narratives written in accordance to the dictates of those in power and as such are biased in their interpretations. The physical and mental torture meted out to Stanley leaves an indelible scar in his mind and gives birth to his great fear against all forces that coalesce to form a collective force (they) which is immensely powerful and at the same time devastating. This paranoia is dormant till the time Stanley is in a comfortable, secure place and surrounded by familiar, innocuous people like Pete, Meg and Lulu. But the arrival of the mysterious Goldberg and McCann, in the boarding house galvanizes the terror and panic in the subconscious mind and intensifies it to the extent, that Stanley vents out his frustration by madly beating the toy drum which he gets as a birthday present (though he denies it is his birthday) from Meg. The savagery of Stanley s reaction on receiving the toy drum is also effected by Stanley s despair at being treated like a child by Meg. A toy drum is usually gifted to a child. Meg gifts Stanley a toy drum as he is a musician and also because she feels the child in Stanley will like the gift. But what she fails to understand is that by being a mother surrogate to Stanley, she has made Stanley dependent on her to an extent that is disliked by Stanley himself. Stanley s disgust for the mother er Meg and his attempt to free himself from her (abject s) clutches is thus reflected in his uncontrolled and wild beating of the drum, gifted by ... The Plastic Pink Flamingo Analysis It s crazy to think how one of the greatest super powers in the world is home to probably the most superficial, show off, easily influenced group of people in the world. From the very beginning America has been a melting pot of adaptations with nothing in our culture, even our blood line, being true American. We have this desire to show off to everyone around us about or trips and wealth whether it be with t shirts and pictures or pink flamingos. In an essay entitled The Plastic Pink Flamingo... Jennifer Price uses these 1950 s lawn ornaments as a way to demonstrate her views on American culture. American s have turned something which we almost hunted...to extinction for the sole purpose of plumes and meat into a symbol of our wealth and pizzazz. The American slave trade, which was a good idea to a lot of people at one point in time, was a horrific offense (which it was) to those same groups of people 100 years later. America is so quick to turn their beliefs and stands into whatever is the right side of history at the time even if it contradicts something they previously believed. • 21. The Effect Of Integrin s Vary From The Type Of Protein Essay The effects of integrin s vary from the type of protein they are and how they affect a certain part of the body. They are usually surface receptors that will interact with extracellular matrix. There is a family of alpha and beta classes which would usually form heterodimers. They are used for adhesion purposes most of the time and can also transduce a biochemical signal into or out of the cell. This process is called bidirectional, where the can transmit information from in and out of a cell. There are different structures that integrin s play a role in. Integrin s can bind to a ligand, where it will form a complex with a biological molecule that will usually serve as a purpose. They can go through a process called activation, where they would have a conformational change of the receptor. They can also trigger a cascade effect, which can change a receptors shape. CD 36 is a type of integrin protein, which is found mostly in the human. It usually binds to collagen, thrombospondin, anionic phospholipids and more. They are also glycosylated, and are an integrin plasma membrane protein that vary in a family that bind to lipid receptors. It functions in recognizing different lipoproteins, fatty acid transports, and cell matrix interactions. This integrin is very diverse and deals mostly with fatty acid structures. (Figure 1). • 23. The Approach to Nature of Descartes and White Essay The Approach to Nature of Descartes and White The approach to nature which René Descartes takes is distinct from that of Gilbert White. Descartes and White have similar key methods of examining nature. It is mainly in Descartes deductive reasoning and beliefs that lead him to the method of approaching nature internally (mind and body). Conversely, White s keen observances, inductive reasoning, and appreciation for his surroundings lead him to the method of investigating the external nature (Selborne). Although ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this hierarchy, God stands as some more perfect being on which [humans] [depend] (Descartes, 26). Humans are placed in the centre, because God grants us the ability to reason the ability to distinguish what is true from what is false (Descartes, 22). Below us rest animals, having no reason. Truth in nature therefore, must not come from animals since they are lesser beings, but rather, it must be found within humans. White finds appreciation for the external nature which Descartes considers to be less certain (Descartes, 28). While Descartes takes a rational approach, White takes a scientific, yet literary means toward nature. He observes nature ardently, noting animals modes of life housing, reproduction, communications, transportation, and physical appearance. His ability to personify these animals creates a meeting place for wild life and human feeling (White, xvii). In his recordings for example, White observes the swallow s mode of life. It builds its nest, often within barns and out houses against the rafters (White, 156). The swallow lays from four to six white eggs, dotted with red specks; and brings about her first brood about the last week in June, or the first week of July (White, 157). California is going through a very difficult period right now because of this drought and there are still people who think that Nestle taking water and marketing something that should be a public right is okay. For example, people like the Chief Executive Officer of Nestle waters, Peter Brabeck Letmath, recently said that water is a food like any other and it should have a price value because it is not a human right (Bacher). Pumping water out of California s water sources while in an exceptional drought is outrageous. However, the many jobs offered by Nestle mean more production of plastic bottles creating more waste and more pollution. As I interviewed one of my classmates, Tiffany Xiong, she brought up the point about how some people might say that water bottles are good because they provide water access for when there are no other options or when access to clean water is lost. Even though the bottled water might provide water in times of crisis, relying too much on bottled water can eventually lead up to the same crisis that other disadvantaged regions are facing. Bottled water might be convenient and fitting for most people, but it is still very expensive and corrupt compared to tap water. Also, bottled water companies have great impacts of producing and distributing millions of gallons of water on global warming. Many cities of California are suffering from the devastating drought and Nestles pumping and Sacramento is amongst the top. In the state of California, the city of Sacramento is feeling the outcome of the water pumping by Nestle, as well as the drought. Sacramento has reached its Fourth year of this record braking drought, but this is not stopping Nestle from pumping water into water bottles and selling it to the public for profit. The goal of this study was to dispute the negative heterosexism perceptions attached to the development of children with parents who identify as gay and lesbian. The authors focused on the analysis of previous research findings, comparing the outcomes of the children from heterosexual single mothers and homosexual parents, particularly lesbian mothers. These studies explored the relationship between homophobia, the sexual orientation of the parents and the outcome of the child; in addition to the influence on sexual preferences and well being of the children. A critical finding from this study, was the belief that the discrimination surrounding homophobia is the core reason as to why the concern behind sexual orientation of parents exists at all. This article found a stronger correlation between the children, specifically daughters raised by lesbian mothers, and the absence of typical gender identities associated with their behaviour, chosen activities and aspirations for the future. These results suggest children of lesbian parenting are not forced to restrict themselves to certain gender associated roles. When examining the sexual preferences and behaviour of the children from both households, they found the children of lesbian mothers were more open to considering a same sex relationship in their future. In his essay he talks about the difference between higher and lower pleasures and what significance they have in his utilitarian moral theory. His theory is based on the rule that actions are right in proportion as they tend to promote happiness, wrong as they tend to produce the reverse of happiness. Many people experience different kinds of pleasure and he talks about how they can differ in quality and quantity. Mills talks about higher and lower pleasures and what they mean. Higher and lower pleasures are two things that bring someone pleasure but pleasure one brings greater pleasure than pleasure 2. • 40. A Room Of One s Own And Terry Eagleton Analysis There are many different theories you can look for when reading literature. You have five of Terry Eagleton s theories which are reader s response, feminism, psychological view, and historical, and formalism. There is Nietzsche s theory where he believes everything is a metaphor, everything can be interpreted differently by the reader. Emerson s theory is transidlism and existentialism. Transidlism is when someone will accept that there are miracles in the world. Existentialism is when someone doesn t believe there are miracles. The last theory is the chaos theory where everything is connected to everything, one thing sets off a chain reaction, and the whole world is affected by it. You can see these different theories in Virginia Woolf s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore, this is how she thought the life for women would be like in the sixteenth century, any women born with a talent would end up being laughed up, mocked and ending their lives like the fictional character Judith. A highly gifted girl who had tried to use her gift for poetry would have been so thwarted and hindered by other people, so tortured and pulled asunder by her own contrary instincts, that she must have lost her health and sanity to a certainty (Woolf). Finally you notice Emerson s theory of transidlism which is someone who believes in miracles. Woolf believes that there can be miracles for women. For my belief is that if we live another century or so I am taking of the common life which is the real life and not of the little separate lives which we live as individuals and have five hundred a year each of us and rooms of our own; if we have the habit of freedom and the courage to write exactly what we think; if we escape a little from the common sitting room and see human beings not always in their relation to each other but in relation to reality; and the sky, too, and the trees or whatever it may be in themselves; if we look past Milton s hogey, for no human being should shut out the view; if we face the fact, for it is a fact, that there is no arm to cling to, but that we go alone and that our relation is to the world of reality and not only to the world of men and women, then the opportunity will come and the dead poet ... • 41. Summary Of Bonanza Episode Day Of Reckoning Personal Analysis of Bonanza Episode Day of Reckoning I found in this episode countless connections to what we have been learning in class in regards to the Native Americans and their encounters with white men. In this particular episode, I observed examples of hostility between both the white man and Native Americans. Similar to what we had learned in class about the constant hostility that was present with many white men and Native Americans due to the white man essentially taking over the Native American s land. I observed how the Native Americans slowly became like the white man once he was brought into his home. This again reminded me of what we had learned in class about how Native Americans were encouraged to take up farming, wear clothes like white men, chop their long hair off to have it short representing the hair of the white men, cook and prepare food like the white man and live in a home like the white man. These encouragements and what the white man may have seen as examples of kindness and hospitality were actually uprooting the Native Americans from their own culture. This is especially true for Matsou, who feels very strongly about not taking up ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This emphasis on religion was another topic we discussed in class. We learned about how the white man s faith was heavily pushed upon the Native American people. They were encouraged to abandon their own faith and believe solely in what the white man believed in. • 42. Popular Support In Julius Caesar Essay Popular support and the distribution of power are two intertwining concepts that are prominent in Nicolo Machiavelli s 16th century treatise, The Prince, and Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare, of the same era. While Machiavelli s treatise served to provide a practical guide to a reigning prince and Shakespeare s play served to entertain an Elizabethan audience, both composers examine different perspectives of popular support and the distribution of power. The Prince similarly suggests that popular support is essential in achieving power, but prioritises the importance of gaining support from the citizens over the support from nobles. Machiavelli critically analyses the advantages and disadvantageous concerning monarchy and popular support ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Caesar s power is distributed amongst characters including Antony, Brutus and Octavian, and as such, his own individual power is weakened, giving Brutus and the conspirators the opportunity to rebel against him. Brutus power is conveyed in Cassius speech in Act 1 Scene 2, where he utilises rhetorical questions including, Why would that name [Caesar] be sounded more than yours? and sarcasm by referring Caesar as Immortal , to undermine Caesar s authority as a ruler. However, while Brutus and the conspirators successfully murder Caesar, Antony and Octavian emerge as the victors at the Battle at Philippi, suggesting that ultimately Caesar s spirit and rule lives in the noblemen who support him. The recurring supernatural imagery of Caesar s spirit in both Brutus tent prior to the battle in Act 4 Scene 3 and on the battlefield conveyed by Brutus in Act 5 Scene 5, suggests that Caesar s spirit not only metaphorically perpetuates but also literally appears in front of Brutus. The fact that the play is named after him despite his death early in the play and not after Brutus, further enhances the idea that the distribution of power from the leader to his noblemen allows the leader s rule to continue beyond his ... • 44. The Strike of the Eastover Mine Workers in the Movie,... The Academy Award winning movie Harlan County USA is an emotional depiction of the events that surrounded the strike of the Eastover Mine workers in 1973. Barbara Kopple directs a moving film and gives an up close in depth look into the struggle for a livable wage, healthcare that covers the ailments that arise from mine work and safer working conditions. While all of these were issues raised by the striking workers; they were also striking for respect as human beings, an upgrade to the only way of life they knew, and hope for their future. Most men understood that their family s destiny was deeply rooted in coal and since leaving was unlikely, they would be best served by allowing the United Mine Workers of America (UMW) to represent them instead of the company friendly Southern Labor Union (SLU). Which side are you on is a song written to explain that the issue is as simple as black or white, left or right and right or wrong. There is no doubt which side the film is created from and the position is justified. Kopple makes no apology for the one sidedness of her documentary. Kopple said We re pro union, this is a story about the union, and this is the way it is from our point of view. The grievances of the miners were just and needed to be addressed. She does an excellent job of creating sympathy and empathy for the deserving strikers and their families. To understand why the miners decided to strike is to understand Appalachia. • 48. The Most Important Importance Of Plants In Our Society The importance of plants is often overlooked by the general public. They don t realize when they eat, wear, or build something that none of it would be possible without plants. Complex life itself only exists thanks to the evolution of plants. Throughout this essay, I hope to highlight some of the most important aspects of plants including their ecological roles, historical roles, source of food, medicinal uses, spices, erosion control, soil contribution, and many others. The list of plant importance could go on and on forever, but these seem to play the most pertinent role in our society. Plants provide many products that benefit other organisms and their environments. Perhaps one of the most important roles of the plant is photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is the process by which light energy is converted into a usable form. Of this energy obtained by the plant, ten percent is passed on through each level of the trophic chain, and the rest is given off as heat. This theory is known as the 10% Law. The process of photosynthesis also consumes carbon dioxide, and releases oxygen as a byproduct. This is arguably one of the most important functions of plants, because oxygen is such a vital ingredient to life on Earth. With their oxygen producing capabilities, plants have been coined as, The Lungs of the Earth . Another benefit that plants provide to their ecosystems that has only been discovered since an increase in human pollution is their detoxification potential. Many plants ...
