Analysis Of The Article How A Cockpit Remembers Its Speed
One day after reading Hutchins How a Cockpit Remembers its Speed, I was on an airplane flying
to Montreal for the weekend. I took special care to look for the raising and lowering of the slats
and flaps that Hutchins described in his article I m happy to say I was able to give a
rudimentary description to my girlfriend as to what was going on as we took off and landed!
Hutchins argued that there are many representations that are inside the cockpit system, yet outside
the heads of the pilots (pp 267). This first point I agree with; however, he goes on in the
discussion to conclude that the cockpit systems remembers its speeds (pp 286). While Hutchins
and I agree that the pilots are the focal point of the cockpit, I wouldn t go as far as to say that
cockpit remembers its speed. The cockpit is certainly a complex system, with many elements
combining to create the phenomenon of an aircraft that can control its speed and maneuver the
skies, but without the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In one of my others courses, Cognition and Learning, we learned that students learn best when they
are able to ascribe meaning to a memory. Rather than simply walking around a museum reading
scholarly writings on the wall next to exhibits, the interactive tracing sounds like an ideal
alternative. The authors also predicted possible deleterious effects of visitors who produced
misconceptions, but argued that experts would counteract this effect by responding correctly. I
think that the amount of these deleterious effects would depend on the type of museum. While
traces may work great at a high brow museum such as The Louvre, it may not work as well where
misconceptions can run rampant, such as at a science

Song Of Solomon Father Son Relationship
Father and Son s Helluva Piss Similarities and Differences
In Song of Solomon, Toni Morrison illustrates the relationship between two Macon Dead s, father
and son. Throughout the novel, Macon II and Macon III, better known as Milkman, have bouts of
conflict and reconciliation, and with each interaction their similarities and differences are gradually
revealed. However, there is one image which reveals truths about both characters without any
interaction. Set decades apart, both father and son are set in parallel scenes, urinating in the
wilderness, in the open air. Perhaps small and seemingly unimportant, but these actions and images
can be unpacked further than face value; subtle details planted by Morrison can be used to reveal
both the similar and different character traits of Macon and Milkman. ... Show more content on

Macon stands up to do his business without any warning or asking for any sort of permission:
...and immediately, like a burglar out on his first job, stood up to pee. (PAGE) In contrast,
Milkman has to beg and plead: I have go to go to the bathroom...I have to go! (34) At the surface
level, readers might only believe that this slight difference was caused by contrasting
circumstances. But the question can be asked: what s the difference between Macon making his
own decision, versus Milkman begging for permission? Really digging deep into these images, we
notice that these images help to show how Macon seems to exercise control over himself, is able
to forge ahead into his own destiny. Whereas Milkman, at least (especially) as he s shown in his
early childhood, is hesitant to make independent decisions in

Rock And Roll In The 1950 s
Did you know that the King of Rock himself, Elvis Presley, recorded over 600 songs, but he did
not write a single of them? Rock became popular in the 1950 s, it got their roots from 1940 s and
1950 s its style which drew heavily on the African American genres of jazz, blues and rhythm and
blues. Musically, rock is centered around an electric guitar, electric bass, drums in one or more
singer. Typically, rock has a 4/4 time signature using verse to chorus form, but the genre has
become very diverse over the years.
The foundation of rock music are in rock and roll, which originated in the United States the late
1940 and early 1950 s and quickly spread to the rest of the world. Debate surrounds which record
was the first rock and roll record. The contenders were Goree Carter s Rock Awhile, Rocket 88
by Jackie Brenston, and Jimmy Preston Rock the Joint. The first record to reach national
popularity was Bill Haley and the Comets Rock Around the Clock. Haley created music that
appealed to the youth because it s exciting back beat, its call to dance, and the actions of its lyrics.

Conformity In Psychology
Conformity, as defined by Simply Psychology, is a type of social influence involving a change in
belief or behavior in order to fit in with a group . The term conformity is a term that s common
place in the psychology community because of how applicable the idea is to the common person
and their actions. Conformitycan be caused by a myriad of different things, some of which being
because the individual desires to either fit in with the majority of the group or because they
genuinely feel the popular within the group is the correct one. Both of these phenomena are
known as social normative and social informative influence respectively. If we go further into
detail, social normative influence is caused by real and imagined group pressure. For example, if
one were to stop reading a certain book series because their classmate viewed it as immature and
tacky that would be conformity in response to real group pressure.... Show more content on

things such as if you don t believe in this, then you re a part of the problem or how can you not

Astrology Vs Astronomy Essay
Astronomy versus Astrology
Astronomy is a science that studies everything outside of the earth s atmosphere, such as planets,
stars, asteroids, galaxies; and the properties and relationships of those spiritual bodies. Astronomers
base their studies on research and observation. Astrology, on the other hand, is the belief that the
positioning of the stars and planets affect the way events occur on earth. If you re interested in the
solar system and the planets, other celestial objects like asteroids and comets, other galaxies and
the rest of the universe, what makes up space, and the possibility of alien life or space travel,
astronomy is the field you re considering. Astronomy is a natural science that studies celestial
objects and phenomena. It applies mathematics, physics, and chemistry, in an effort to explain the
origin of those objects and phenomena and their evolution. Objects of interest include planets,
moons, stars, galaxies, and comets; while the phenomena include supernova explosions, gamma ray
bursts, and cosmic microwave background radiation. More generally, all astronomical phenomena
that originate outside Earth s atmosphere are within the purview of astronomy. A related but
distinct subject, physical cosmology, is concerned with the study of the Universe as a whole.
Astronomy is the oldest of the natural sciences. The early civilizations in recorded history, such as
the Babylonians, Greeks, Indians, Egyptians, Nubians, Iranians, Chinese, and Maya performed

The Endangerment of Coral Reefs When people, tourists especially, ask themselves what is one

what is beneath? . Far in the aquamarine water there is another world that people do not even

Delicate purple sea fans, blood red sponges, spiny puffer fish, poisonous fish, giant clams, yellow
lip snakes and giant manta rays are just a small sample of the fascinating residents that awe
visitors from the terrestrial realm (Weber). To get more in detail about the importance of coral
reefs, they are providers of food source and living as well as the fact that they are among the
most biologically diverse regions on Earth. The actual coral itself is known to be extremely
ancient that evolved into reef building forms over the last 25 years (Donner). There are two
types of coral, one is hard coral, which is the major reef building species and then there is soft
coral, which are sea fans and sea whips. The reefs are classified into three types: barrier reefs,
fringing reefs, and atolls. They create specialized habitats that provide shelter, food and
breeding sites for numerous plants and animals. Zooxan thellae is the algae found on coral reefs
and the small organisms live together, which is one the main food sources on the reefs for all
the species in the ocean. Florida s coral reefs are very important to its state. It is a fact that

Descriptive Essay About My Dream
A dream I had recently has stuck with me. I m in a small room that I don t recognize. There s
nothing of note about it other than it has no windows and only a single bright red door. The
walls and floor are all sterile white. In the center of the room there is a round wooden table with a
small fish tank in the center of it and it has a couple of goldfishinside. I don t know where I am, but
I do know that it s my job to feed and take care of the fish. This seems like a simple enough task,
but after a few minutes, I hear a knock on the door. I open the door to see my younger sister
holding another fish tank, this time with a small purple fish inside of it. She hands it to me without
saying a word, and then she leaves. I put the fish on the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I could make sense of most of the dream, but one part I could not figure out. Why fish?
I decided to look up what fish represented to Jung, seeing as I couldn t think of any significance
myself, other than them being relatively easy to take care of. In my research I found a few
explanations for the fish symbol, but the one that stood out to me the most was fertility. Not very
many people know this, but my husband and I have been trying to conceive for almost two years
without any luck. We ve recently been discussing going to a fertility doctor to see if there are any
issues that could be impeding us. It s something that has been weighing on my mind lately,
especially since my sister and best friend both had babies in the span of us trying.
In the end, my interpretation came to this stressing myself out and trying to do everything for
everyone else is negatively impacting my ability to become pregnant. I believe that the white
room is a connection to the fact that we are considering involving doctors, and the bright red
door represents my period, which is always an issue for me. The people coming to the door are a
literal interruption of my cycle. My doctor said that stress is likely causing me not to ovulate and
that stress definitely stems from all of the commitments in my life. I have a very big problem
telling people no, which means I end up with too

trying to represent how their product makes you sleep more soundly and peacefully. The acting,
however, is a bit exaggerated. While most people do not actually toss and turn that forcefully

can contribute to the mood of the advertisement, too. The music they play in the television

Similarities Between Beauty And The Beast And Shrek
As children most of the fairy tales we were told about always involved a beautiful princess, a
prince charming and a happily ever after . Among those are Snow White and Cinderella, who are
both mistreated by their evil stepmothers, go through difficulties but at the end they find
happiness. Almost all these fairy tales emphasize the beauty of the female and male protagonists.
They also mostly end in the princess falling in love with the prince, often after the first kiss. For
many of us in the real world, this would be the ideal way to fall in love with someone and quite a
dream come true. However, there s one fairy tale that gives a different message on what true love
is. In the story Beauty and the Beast and the movie Shrek, Beauty and Shrek fall in love with
people who are their complete opposites, not by the way they look but the way they are. The
ending to both stories bring surprises as they both find out that they re not so different after all. The
transformation of Princess Fionainto an ogress and the Beast into a human is not necessary to
show a happy ending. In Beauty and the Beast, Beauty is noble and sweet. She is forced to live
with a beast in his castle. At first she s scared but as the day passes, she begins to enjoy his
company. She visits her father and one night, she dreams that the Beast is dying. She runs back
to the castle and pleads for him not to die. As she hugs him, she agrees to marry him, something
he had asked her long before but she had refused. As she mutters these words and to her surprise,
the Beast transforms into a handsome prince. Shrek is a green ogre who enjoys solitude and
keeping to himself. He doesn t have any friends and lives in a swamp. After the ruler of Duloc,
Lord Farquaad, sends all the fairy tales to invade Shrek s swamp, he sets out on a journey to find
him and get everyone out of his home. He s accompanied by his soon to become sidekick, Donkey,
the only one to know the way to Duloc. Lord Farquaad in order to become a king needs to marry a
princess. He chooses Princess Fiona, who s locked away in a tower guarded by a dragon. Lord
Farquaad agrees to give Shrek his swamp with the condition that he brings Princess Fiona to him.

Cause And Bad Effects Of Smoking
Smoking
We all know smoking is bad for us. But do you know exactly why? Smoking can lead to cancer
and cancer can lead to death. That can put a big effect on a loved one. For the people that don t

the ones who quick to light up a cigarette. Second hand smoke affect society more than the person

Smoking has people that don t smoke kick out money for the ones who smoke. It is proven that
the person who inhales the smoke coming out from the cigarette is more affected than the one
who smokes. Second hand smoke can cause you to get sick than you might have to go to the
doctor. You may not have Medicaid and hospital bills can be sky high. When someone smokes a
cigarette, most of the smoke doesn t go into their lungs. It goes into the air, where anyone nearby
can breathe it. That s why some restaurants smoking is prohibited. Do you have kids at home?
Smoking around your kids increases their risk of developing ear infections, asthma, and other
breathing complications like coughs, shortness of breath. Every family member in your household
is at risk cause of second hand.
When working on a job even when you not puffing a cigarette your colleagues can still be

George Orwell The Freedom of the Press (alternate preface) This book was first thought of, so
far as the central idea goes, in 1937, but was not written down until about the end of 1943. By the
time when it came to be written it was obvious that there would be great difficulty in getting it
published (in spite of the present book shortage which ensures that anything describable as a book
will sell ), and in the event it was refused by four publishers. Only one of these had any ideological

It is not exactly forbidden to say this, that or the other, but it is not done to say it, just as in mid
Victorian times it was not done to mention trousers in the presence of a lady. Anyone who
challenges the prevailing orthodoxy finds himself silenced with surprising effectiveness. A
genuinely unfashionable opinion is almost never given a fair hearing, either in the popular press
or in the highbrow periodicals. At this moment what is demanded by the prevailing orthodoxy is
an uncritical admiration of Soviet Russia. Every one knows this, nearly everyone acts on it. Any
serious criticism of the Soviet rГ©gime, any disclosure of facts which the Soviet government
would prefer to keep hidden, is next door to unprintable. And this nation wide conspiracy to flatter
our ally takes place, curiously enough, against a background of genuine intellectual tolerance. For
though you are not allowed to criticize the Soviet government, at least you are reasonably free to
criticize our own. Hardly anyone will print an attack on Stalin, but it is quite safe to attack
Churchill, at any rate in books and periodicals. And throughout five years of war, during two or
three of which we were fighting for national survival, countless books, pamphlets and articles
advocating a compromise peace have been published without interference. More, they have been
published without exciting much disapproval. So long as the prestige of the USSR is not involved,

A supermarket chain focuses on cost and quality, with some specialty chains adding flexibility by
carrying a broader range of products that may be targeted towards customers interested in organic

shoppers are typically repeat customers and have a constant demand level. The supermarket
supply chain must be responsive by receiving produce quickly to ensure freshness and have a high

by emphasizing speed to maintain freshness, hence perceived quality. Auto manufacturers have

Baker s Cyst Removal
The man who first discovered the baker s cyst in the mid 1800 s was a british man named Dr.
William Morant Baker. A baker s cyst also known as a popliteal cyst is located in the middle of the
semimembranosus tendon and medial head of the gastrocnemius muscle (Snir, 2013). Sometimes
the Baker s cyst can be mistaken for a blood clot because it presents the same symptoms. A
magnetic resonance imaging scan (MRI) can determine if the patient indeed has a cyst on the
back of their leg. Other tests may be done to make sure that the cyst is not a malignant or benign
tumor before the surgeon tries to excise it. A baker s cyst is formed when a patient has damage,
arthritis, or a meniscus tear in their knee. Rheumatoid arthritis and Osteoarthritis are generally
the main cause of a formation of a baker s cyst (Houston Methodist, 2015). Although any kind of
knee injury could eventually lead to a painful baker s cyst. Too much exercise can also hinder the
healing of the cyst. Wright (2015) stated that, A Baker s cyst most commonly occurs in children
aged 4 to 7 years and in adults aged 35 to 70 years, as you can see that is a very large age gap. The
cyst behind a child s knee rarely ever affects them and goes away in time, but for an adult it is
harder to get rid of because the cyst is from a current knee joint problem.
Most cases where it is not serious the cyst is usually aspirated of fluid. If the

Waknuk s Present Day Women
The women who stray away from the preset quotas on how they must act in society are ridiculed.
The author establishes this issue well in the cases of Sophie Wender, Rosalind Morton, and Aunt
Harriet. These individuals are undoubtedly the most developed emotionally, as well as the most
assertive and genuine representations of present day women, shown throughout the novel. Rosalind
and Sophie are the closest there are to heroines in consideration of the fact they repeatedly confront
and fight for their beliefs in how mutants should be treated. This is a stark contrast to the general
representation, which is one of fearful, timid housewives who only do as their husbands permit
them. Nevertheless their way of acting is considered sinful ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The earliest display of this social hierarchy is introduced through the story of Elias Strorm, the
most prominent figure in Waknuk s history. In a few seasons he straitened the coltishness with
admonitions, faded the pink and gold with preaching, and produced a sad, grey wraith of
wifehood who died, unprotesting, a year after her second son was born (1616). One could even
argue that Elias s wife died twice, once when Elias drilled and beat her into the mold of a
submissive housewife, and finally when her heart stopped beating. This imagined ideal of how
a proper wife must act did not die with Elias, as Joseph Strorm decided to not make the same
mistake with his wife. Emily Strorm, while being slightly less frail and decrepit than Elias s
wife, she is still at the same mercy to Joseph as Elias s wife was to him. When David was beaten
by Joseph Emily was unable to anything other than cry as she dressed his wounds. Emily, Elias s
wife, as well as all other women in the novel (even to an extent in the fringes) are submissive and
do not question or disobey their husbands will. The only exception of a strong leader like female

Lastig Effects of the Holocaust
The Holocaust not only affected the areas where it took place, it affected the entire world. Even

horrific counts of genocide that the world has ever encountered. The cries of the victims in
concentration camps still ring around the globe today, and they are not easily ignored. Although the

The Holocaust made being proud of oneself a crime. It attacked the Jewish people religion, way
of life, and self pride. They feared for their children s futures, and their grandchildren s future. To
them, being Jewish wasn t worth going to concentration camps to fight for their heritage. The
Holocaust was one of the first giant acts of genocide. It brought light to the horrific acts of
racism that the world still faces today. The Nazi s were not only trying to destroy Jewish people,
they were trying kill all of the Polish and Roman people as well. (HARFF 6) They believed that
these types of people were evil and did not deserve to live on the same earth with them. Acts of

Poetry And Literary Analysis Of Birches By Robert Frost
Birches , written by Robert Frost in 1913 and published as part of his Mountain Interval
collection, is a poem of childhood naivety. The euphonic piece explores the use of abundant
writing techniques, all of which contribute to its layers of complexity. The speaker of this poem
is focused on birch trees, hoping that they have been bent by a young boy swinging them;
however, the speaker is fully aware of the Truth , knowing that they have indeed been bent down
by an ice storm. Wishing to go back in time to the days in which he himself would swing birchtrees,
the speaker contemplates more profound meanings of this swinging. A tendency found in Frost s
writing is an implementation of nature, often utilized as either the focus of the work or just an
auxiliary motif, resulting in quasi transcendental themes. Being one of his most beloved works,
Robert Frost s Birches is a poem which, upon analysis of its complex use of poetic and literary
devices, reveals a culmination of distinct themes. Birches is a poem open to many themes and
interpretations, some of which only require the poem s most direct, nominal meaning. Others
interpretations require a more in depth, holistic approach, analyzing its structure and devices.
Neither of these approaches are more correct than the other. A holistic interpretation of this work
instills the motif of balance, putting forth the idea that life is a constant pursuit to achieve balance
between equal, yet opposite concepts. Another

Bronze Coins Essay
Archaeologists have discovered nine 1,400 year old bronze coins that may have been hidden by
Christians trying to escape Persian invaders on a highway leading to Jerusalem in Israel. In June,
the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) conducted an archaeological dig ahead of a widening
project for Highway 1 situated between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. The scientists found a two story
structure, a winepress, and nine bronze coins that ate back to the 7th century C.E., Haaretz details.
The archaeologists think that the ancient coins belonged to Christians who hid them as they were
trying to flee Persians who invaded Israel in 614 C.E. In the course of time, the place where the

It seems that during a time of danger the owner of the hoard placed the coins in a cloth purse that
he concealed inside a hidden niche in the wall. He probably hoped to go back and collect it. The

the archaeologists date the coins. Earlier this month, Live Science published a story on the

This lack of understanding causes fear and a personal defense from utilizing the web and all the
possibilities that lie within it. In essence, the concept behind the World WideWeb is really quite
simple. It is nothing more than a community of information sites on the Internet computer network
(Pasadena Public Library). So basically, the World Wide Web is a small part of a greater entity
the Internet. The sites, or web pages, are all connected by this network and can be considered a
community because of their common location the World Wide Web. If you can visualize it,
imagine a large network, the Internet, which connects people and information all over the world.
Then imagine within that network, a community of its own. The World Wide Web has an endless
number of sites, made of web pages, and all of which are connected through the Internet.
So how does one use or navigate on the Web? To understand that, one must first understand the
language (that which makes it run, understand and execute commands) the web is based upon.
This language is known as Hypertext Markup Language, which will later be discussed in more
detail. Essentially, it the hypertext language uses hot words to link pages to each other (Halonen).

Who Are The Most Powerful Characters In Macbeth
What does it mean to be powerful? In William Shakespeare s Macbeth, Macbeth is initially loyal to
the throne because he helps fight for Scotland and executes the rebel Thane of Cawdor. Later he
becomes a traitor by turning on King Duncan. After Macbeth s actions he falls to his terrible
tragedy. Although Macbeths physical traits can be associated with being powerful, the weird sisters
are the most powerful characters because they can control the weather, alter sleep patterns, and
predict the future.
To begin, the witches reveal they can change the direction and force of the winds. After the first
witch tells her story about the sailor s wife, the second witch says what she will do about the
sailor and his wife. She says I ll give thee a wind (i.iii.12). The witch says that she is going to make
the weather outside windy to push his ship further out to sea. Knowing that the witches can make
changes to the weather shows they are powerful because they can create a storm at any given time,
causing accidents to occur. LIke in the real world, weather that is rainy/ windy ect is associated
with unpleasant things happening. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Eureka Hunt Summary
The article, The Eureka Hunt, introduces us with the story of a firefighter,Wag Dodge and his
survival during an out of control fire in the Mann Gulch, in Montana. The fire was spreading faster
and heading toward the direction of the firefighters. Dodge, in a moment of insight, had an escape
plan; he stopped running, igniting the ground in front of him with a match, drenched his hanker
chef with water, and laid down on the smoldering embers, as the fire past him. His quick decision is
a mere example which psychologist and neuroscientists use to determine the insight experience.

In doing so, he conducted experimental word puzzles to see if it could be solved by insight or
by analysis. He teamed up with John Kounios, a neuroscientist at Drexel University, who both
share the same interest in insight. With both their ideas, they combined EEG and fMRI testings
to scan people s brain while they solved the puzzles to see if it can construct a precise map, both
in time and space, of the insight process. The resulting studies, published in 2004 and 2006, found
that people who solved puzzles with insight were using a portion of the cortical areas. According
to Jung Beeman and Kounios, a small fold of tissue on the surface of the right hemisphere, the
anterior superior temporal gyrus (aSTG) becomes active first before insight occurs. Once the brain
is focused on the problem, the cortex needs to relax, in order for the right hemisphere to provide
insight. But as Jung Beeman and Kounios concluded, by trying to force insight can actually prevent
insight; the brain must focus on the task but at the same time it has to be accidental. Earl Miller, a
neuroscientist at M.I.T., spent years studying the prefrontal

Competitiveness And Its Effect On Our Lives
Competitiveness is the spark that ignites the flames in our minds. It is what governs our very
existence, our survival in this world. The world s motivation to do the best we can and to
accomplish what no other has is stimulated by competitiveness. Our relationship with our family,
friends, neighbors, community, and the planet is what inspires us to push ourselves to our
culminating limits. Many would witness contention amongst children as a detrimental aspect of
behavior, while in reality competition is what allows us to excel beyond our accomplishments.
Students can set goals for themselves and become proud of the work they achieved when they look
at themselves in the mirror and envision the person they have become. When we apprehend the
reality of the world, we come to realize that there is little in life for which we do not compete for.
Our country, our world, needs to redefine the interpretation of competition and what it means to be
successful and unsuccessful in life, particularly in education.
Competitiveness is the process of motivating students by fueling their flame to success. It is the
opposition between two forces that contest to achieve the same goal, success. Competitiveness
defines us as human beings. The ideology of competition derives from our obligation to surpass
others in life. Humans are universally characterized with greed, but in this world, we cannot always
have what we want. We have a tendency to want certain things that we cannot have, and as a

A Reflection On The Work For Phi s Primary Mission
During collective bargaining, unionized organizations engage several nonwage issues. These issues
include management rights, union security, seniority provisions, the number of hours worked, and

How Did The Minoans Influence The Mycenaeans
The Aegean period brought about three significant culture civilizations; the Minoans, the
Mycenaeans, and then the Greeks (Matthews, Noble, Platt, 2014). It is evident the civilizations of
Greece learned (although made their own), from the Egyptian and Mesopotamian cultures, which
truly speaks to how we continue to learn and evolve from previous sets consistent culture of
advancement. The Minoans preceded the Mycenaeans who subsequently preceded the Greeks. The
key aspects of the Minoan and Mycenaean cultures that lived on among the later Greeks include
their writing, architecture, the arts and trades, and religion, to name a few.
The Minoans, a prosperous society, due to their domination in trade, formed on the Greek Island of
Crete around 2000 BC (Osborne, 2015). The Minoan civilization was named after King Minos, the
legendary king (Matthews, et al, 2014). The Minoan civilization was evidently not Greek, as the
writing Linear A, has still not been able to translated. However, this primitive writing led to the

social media and mass media shined light to life as a professional athlete, we were unaware of
exactly what went on behind the curtains between the athletes and the organization that they
played for. Despite the fact that athletes can earn a lot of money at the highest level, they also
experience bad work conditions, dissatisfied with how they are treated, unreasonable pay and

The Crime Of Hate Crimes
Hate crimes are very common in today s society, they can range from various ethnicities and
orientations as well as the severity of the crime committed. A hate crime is defined as the violence
of intolerance and bigotry, intended to hurt and intimidate someone because of their race, ethnicity,
national origin, religious, sexual orientation, or disability. The purveyors of hate use explosives,
arson, weapons, vandalism, physical violence, and verbal threats of violence to instill fear in
their victims, leaving them vulnerable to more attack and feeling alienated, helpless, suspicious
and fearful . These attacks are fueled by a hatred for the victim s personal lifestyle. As
mentioned above, hate crimes are not specific to one group of people, the crimes can be found in
every aspect of society, some are just more obvious than others. In a 2014 study it was found that
51 percent of hate crimes were motivated by the victims ethnicity. Race was the second highest
rate of motivation. According to this study, it has been determined that majority of hate crimes can
be classified as simple assaults . In relation to these statistics it is estimated that only 4% of the
assaults resulted in an arrest. It is also believed that more than 60% of hate crimes are not reported.

The Station nightclub fire occurred on February 20, 2003, in West Warwick, RI. The fourth
deadliest nightclub fire in U.S. history, a blaze at The Station nightclub in W. Warwick, RI, on
February 20, 2003. The fire was caused by pyrotechnics set off by the tour manager of the
evening s headlining band Great White, which ignited flammable sound insulation polyurethane

been activated, and although there were four possible exits, most people headed for the front

the club in less than 6 minutes. Video footage of the fire shows its ignition, rapid growth, the
heavy smoke quickly made escape impossible, and the exit blockage that further hindered
evacuation. The ensuing stampede led to a crush in the narrow hallway leading to that exit,
quickly blocking the exit completely and resulting in numerous deaths and injuries among the
patrons and staff. The toxic smoke, heat and the stampede of people toward the exits killed 100;
230 were injured and another 132 escaped uninjured. A total of 462 people were in the club, even

The Best Blessings Of Emma In Jane Austen s Emma
Jane Austen begins the novel Emma by stating, Emma Woodhouse, handsome, clever, and rich,

existence, and had lived nearly twenty one years in the world with very little to distress or vex her
(1) immediately giving readers the impression that Emmais a young woman whom the readers

that while Emma has a good reputation and a circle of people who love her and want the best

Emma, beauty, cleverness, and wealth prove to be mixed blessings at best, for they foster the
conceit of arrogance that lead her to hurt others and threaten her own happiness (86) which ties
into my argument that Emma s good reputation is not necessarily based on her character, but
instead, the lifestyle she lives, which is a similar concept for Tom in Tom Jones. Tom Jones is

Trifles Symbolism
He didn t drink, and kept his word as well as most, I guess, and paid his debts. But he was a hard
man, Mrs. Peters. Just to pass the time of day with him, (Shivers) like a raw wind that gets to the
bone (Glaspell). Minnie has suffered because of Mr. Wright s cold and unfeeling nature. Her
isolation, the gloom of her surroundings, and her husband s dispassion slowly drove her to the
brink of insanity (Galen). When only the bird was holding Minnie in the house was killed, she saw
no reason that she should stay with her husband in that house. The men think women lack
intelligence because of their gender. After, the women look at the canary, birdcage, and the quilt
they figure out how the husband died. In the drama Trifles, the quilt symbolizes Minnie s state of
mind and it shows in her stitching how nervous and angry she feels. The patchwork of Minnie s
life represents loneliness and isolation. Usually when women do patchwork it consists of a cloth
that has meaning behind it to treasure it. Women in a group come together and work on their
patchwork or they help each other, but Minnie had no one to help her and she felt lonely. Minnie s
stitching goes from perfect and orderly to messy and uneven, the stitching shows how nervous
Minnie was at the time. The events happening in the house is a reflect on Minnie s stitching. She
tried to fend off her depression with bits of gaiety brightly colored quilts and a caged songbird but

Connotation In Cry The Beloved Country
The author uses the word forlorn, used on page 35 of the book Cry, the Beloved Country in the
sentence About you there is grass and bracken and you may hear the forlorn crying of the
Titihoya, one of the birds of the veld. Below you is the valley of the Umzimkulu , instead of the
word sorrowful even though both mean unhappy because forlorn gives more of negative
connotation and better describes the setting. This is appropriate in this context because the
village of Umzimkulu is put in a state of abandonment and social instability. Residents are part
of a conglomerate which pertains to abuse and racial discrimination. This word effectively
shows the message of prejudice shown by Paton. The author uses the word deteriorate, used on
page 179 of the book Cry, the Beloved Country in the sentence But it was not permissible to
watch its destruction, and to replace it by nothing, or by so little, that a whole people
deteriorates, physically and morally , instead of the word decline even though both mean to
become worse progressively. Paton uses this word because it gives a negative connotation that
is prevalent throughout the book. Deterioration is a good word to use to describe the state of the
tribal system within Umzimkulu. The social stability that is prevalent between residents of
Umzimkulu is falling apart or deteriorating. It shows that the South African social structure is
falling as a whole. The author uses the word voiceless, used on page 110 of the book Cry, the
Beloved Country in the sentence others say this is a danger, for better paid labour will not only
buy more but will also read more, think more, ask more, and will not be content to be forever
voiceless and inferior , instead of the word silent even though they both mean not speaking. The
author uses the word voiceless because it describes the state of black South Africans during the
time of racial prejudice and apartheid. Paton uses this word to give a tone that blacks had no
voice during the time. Like Kumalo and Absalom, they are taken advantage of by whites and as a
result, one is in a state of sorrow while another has become promiscuous due to prejudice. The
author uses the word disintegration, used on page 178 of the book Cry, the

Examples Of Madness In One Flew Over The Cuckoo s Nest
Madness and Power in One Flew Over The Cuckoo s nest
Madness and mental illness is one of the most common themes used in literature. Many literary
pieces, both modern and classic, had been focused on this topic, whether to discuss a social
issue, or to criticize a political problem in certain society, or even just to discuss the mental state
of some protagonist or a character. To mention some of these literary pieces, there are Catch 22,
Heart of Darkness, Sophie s Choice, and One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest, and many other great,
unforgettable literary pieces. The focus of this essay is on Ken Kesey s classic One Flew Over the
Cuckoo s Nest. This novel was published in 1962, and it instantly became a classic. It tells the story

She uses many examples from literature alongside Ken Kesey, such as Emily Dickinson, Charlotte
Perkins Gilman, Edgar Allan Poe and William Faulkner. This essay talks about insanity versus
sanity and individual versus society, which the critics says they are strongly related to each other.
Sometimes the characters are not clinically insane but labeled such because that character does
not follow the rules established by society, as seen in One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest. Women
were often diagnosed with mental illness labels because they did not follow the accepted gender
role that society has defined. In this quote, Heather Bullis discusses if insanity is really has
something to do with mentality all the time or is it just another stigma to the society. Many other
critics chose to talk and criticize One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest for many reasons, especially
madness, insanity versus sanity, and authority, these are also the main themes of the novel, which
will be the main points of arguments of this

  • 2. Analysis Of The Article How A Cockpit Remembers Its Speed One day after reading Hutchins How a Cockpit Remembers its Speed, I was on an airplane flying to Montreal for the weekend. I took special care to look for the raising and lowering of the slats and flaps that Hutchins described in his article I m happy to say I was able to give a rudimentary description to my girlfriend as to what was going on as we took off and landed! Hutchins argued that there are many representations that are inside the cockpit system, yet outside the heads of the pilots (pp 267). This first point I agree with; however, he goes on in the discussion to conclude that the cockpit systems remembers its speeds (pp 286). • 3. Song Of Solomon Father Son Relationship Father and Son s Helluva Piss Similarities and Differences In Song of Solomon, Toni Morrison illustrates the relationship between two Macon Dead s, father and son. Throughout the novel, Macon II and Macon III, better known as Milkman, have bouts of conflict and reconciliation, and with each interaction their similarities and differences are gradually revealed. However, there is one image which reveals truths about both characters without any interaction. Set decades apart, both father and son are set in parallel scenes, urinating in the wilderness, in the open air. Perhaps small and seemingly unimportant, but these actions and images can be unpacked further than face value; subtle details planted by Morrison can be used to reveal both the similar and different character traits of Macon and Milkman. ... (34) At the surface level, readers might only believe that this slight difference was caused by contrasting circumstances. But the question can be asked: what s the difference between Macon making his own decision, versus Milkman begging for permission? A baker s cyst also known as a popliteal cyst is located in the middle of the semimembranosus tendon and medial head of the gastrocnemius muscle (Snir, 2013). Sometimes the Baker s cyst can be mistaken for a blood clot because it presents the same symptoms. A magnetic resonance imaging scan (MRI) can determine if the patient indeed has a cyst on the back of their leg. Other tests may be done to make sure that the cyst is not a malignant or benign tumor before the surgeon tries to excise it. A baker s cyst is formed when a patient has damage, arthritis, or a meniscus tear in their knee. Rheumatoid arthritis and Osteoarthritis are generally the main cause of a formation of a baker s cyst (Houston Methodist, 2015). The author establishes this issue well in the cases of Sophie Wender, Rosalind Morton, and Aunt Harriet. In a few seasons he straitened the coltishness with admonitions, faded the pink and gold with preaching, and produced a sad, grey wraith of wifehood who died, unprotesting, a year after her second son was born (1616). One could even argue that Elias s wife died twice, once when Elias drilled and beat her into the mold of a submissive housewife, and finally when her heart stopped beating. • 26. Poetry And Literary Analysis Of Birches By Robert Frost Birches , written by Robert Frost in 1913 and published as part of his Mountain Interval collection, is a poem of childhood naivety. The euphonic piece explores the use of abundant writing techniques, all of which contribute to its layers of complexity. The speaker of this poem is focused on birch trees, hoping that they have been bent by a young boy swinging them; however, the speaker is fully aware of the Truth , knowing that they have indeed been bent down by an ice storm. Wishing to go back in time to the days in which he himself would swing birchtrees, the speaker contemplates more profound meanings of this swinging. A tendency found in Frost s writing is an implementation of nature, often utilized as either the focus of the work or just an auxiliary motif, resulting in quasi transcendental themes. Being one of his most beloved works, Robert Frost s Birches is a poem which, upon analysis of its complex use of poetic and literary devices, reveals a culmination of distinct themes. Birches is a poem open to many themes and interpretations, some of which only require the poem s most direct, nominal meaning. Others interpretations require a more in depth, holistic approach, analyzing its structure and devices. Neither of these approaches are more correct than the other. Our country, our world, needs to redefine the interpretation of competition and what it means to be successful and unsuccessful in life, particularly in education. Competitiveness is the process of motivating students by fueling their flame to success. It is the opposition between two forces that contest to achieve the same goal, success. • 46. Connotation In Cry The Beloved Country The author uses the word forlorn, used on page 35 of the book Cry, the Beloved Country in the sentence About you there is grass and bracken and you may hear the forlorn crying of the Titihoya, one of the birds of the veld. Below you is the valley of the Umzimkulu , instead of the word sorrowful even though both mean unhappy because forlorn gives more of negative connotation and better describes the setting. This is appropriate in this context because the village of Umzimkulu is put in a state of abandonment and social instability. Residents are part of a conglomerate which pertains to abuse and racial discrimination. This word effectively shows the message of prejudice shown by Paton. The author uses the word deteriorate, used on page 179 of the book Cry, the Beloved Country in the sentence But it was not permissible to watch its destruction, and to replace it by nothing, or by so little, that a whole people deteriorates, physically and morally , instead of the word decline even though both mean to become worse progressively. Paton uses this word because it gives a negative connotation that is prevalent throughout the book. Deterioration is a good word to use to describe the state of the tribal system within Umzimkulu. The social stability that is prevalent between residents of Umzimkulu is falling apart or deteriorating. It shows that the South African social structure is falling as a whole. The author uses the word voiceless, used on page 110 of the book Cry, the Beloved Country in the sentence others say this is a danger, for better paid labour will not only buy more but will also read more, think more, ask more, and will not be content to be forever voiceless and inferior , instead of the word silent even though they both mean not speaking. The author uses the word voiceless because it describes the state of black South Africans during the time of racial prejudice and apartheid. Paton uses this word to give a tone that blacks had no voice during the time. Like Kumalo and Absalom, they are taken advantage of by whites and as a result, one is in a state of sorrow while another has become promiscuous due to prejudice.
