Belief and Survival
In order for human kind to survive the painfully realistic days of existence, a sort of belief system
is direly needed. As shown through Pi Patel from Life of Pi and Chuck Noland from Cast Away,
holding onto a belief of something provides one with the determination to survive the worst
conditions. Both the novel and the book share the story of two castaways who depend on their
belief in something to survive and conquer their respective challenges Pi Patel who depends on his
faith in religion, and Chuck Noland with his faith in returning to civilization back to his loved one.

Deviance is a violation of social norms, it can be relative. Most of the time, what is deviant to
some people is not deviant to others. Howard Becker explained that deviance is not the act itself,
but the reactions to the act. For example, praying at a party; nothing is wrong with praying, but
people will look at you like you are crazy because you usually don t see anybody praying at a
party, this is violating a social norm. Social norms are the rules of behavior that are considered
acceptable in a group or society. People who do not follow these norms may be shunned or
suffer some kind of consequence. Therefore, this relates back to the example praying at a party,
people may not talk to you because you are praying at a party; this is a consequence of violating
the social norm. The mild social norms I violated were, not holding the door for the people
behind me, being quiet around close friends, and asking my parents for permission to do

established a small shop selling groceries, dry goods, and utensils to the local cotton farmers. By
