Essay on Origins of Popular Sayings
English is an amazing language that reflects many different cultures. Americans have many popular
sayings and figures of speech that, if taken literally, make no logical sense. If you mention the
phrases white elephant, spill the beans, or to pull someone s leg, they make no sense unless you are
familiar with the culture.
The word idiom is used to describe these forms of speech. Idioms are considered to be part of a
nation s culture, and idioms can make learning a foreign language quite challenging. Scholars have
estimated American English to contain at least 25,000 idiomatic expressions. People learning a new
language must memorize the meanings of these phrases like vocabulary, because the interpretations
of idioms can be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The origin of this popular saying will make you smile.
In the early 1700 s an English dramatist named John Dennis created an invention that would
simulate the sound of thunder in one of his theatrical productions. His play failed dismally.
However, later he found that his invention was used to create the sound of thunder in another
performance. Dennis was quoted as saying, They will not let my play run, but they steal my
thunder! The phrase was overheard, passed along and became a popular saying used in the English
language.
To Spill the Beans
When someone spills the beans, they reveal a secret unintentionally. This popular saying has its
origin back in the days of ancient Greece.
When people were voted into many organizations, the membership voted secretly using colored
beans as counters. If one voted for the inclusion of the applicant, one would discretely drop a white
bean into an opaque container. If one voted against the applicant, one would secretly drop a black
or brown bean in the container. Only the officials knew the results of the voting.
Occasionally, an awkward person might accidentally knock over the container, spilling the beans
and revealing the results of the vote before the appointed time. This is how the phrase spilling the
beans has come to describe someone telling a secret.

How Movies Has Changed Today s Society
Movies, are altered to reflect the time period in which they were produced. When subjects think
of movies they consider the time people have here and now, most do not realize where has this
come from, was it history, or was it just some social event that got publicity. Movies in today s
society are altered to reflect the 21st century, with the technology advancements, and the way that
storys are interpreted with many changes. Over the years, the movies have taken a spin off of the
legends that were once told, by doing this it can be altered to compare to the society that people
live in today and the technology advances. With some movies they come from history or legends
that have been told for years repeatedly, now each time it is told it... Show more content on

Bernie Sanders Viewpoints
After having two terms with President Obama, you would think that we would have more
qualified candidates this year. The most qualified candidate in my opinion is US Senator; Bernie
Sanders. He is not only qualified to be the president with years of experience in working in the
government, but he has some great view points. Viewpoints that benefit the people and not only the
one percent.
Today, we live in the richest country in the history of the world, but that means little because much
of the wealth is controlled by a tiny handful of individuals. Since the early 80 s the middle class has
become poorer, and the one percent has gotten richer. There are many of Americans working long
gruesome hours for little pay. But if Bernie is elected

Band Of Brothers
During the time of World War II, America fought to end the tyranny of Nazi Germany by using its
most valuable tool, the Easy Company, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne. The author Stephen
Ambrose catches a glimpse of what these heroic soldiers accomplished in his book Band of
Brothers, by providing readers with interviews of first hand encounters on the battlefields of
Europe, from former paratroopers that served in the 506th Regiment. Ambrose s book depicts how
the spectacles of war create everlasting scars on soldiers mentally and physically, that never fully
heal. Ambrose admired his father, whom was a physician and served in the Navy during World War
II. This influenced Ambrose to become like his farther, but he later became passionate with history,
receiving his Ph. D. from the University of Wisconsin. Ambrose admired the history of war and
wanted to understand the thoughts and emotions that ran through the paratroopers minds from
Toccoa, where they trained for endless days under the command of Lieutenant Sobel, to the last

Company Law Section 14 of the Companies Act 1985
The Joint Stock Companies Act 1844, which enabled companies to be formed by deed of settlement
and the Limited Liability Act 1855, established a general incorporation procedure which offered
limited liability to shareholders and gave recognition to the company as a separate legal persona.
By the Joint Stock Companies Act 1856, the deed was replaced with today s style of constitution,
namely the registration of the Memorandum of Association and the Articles of Association. The
contents of these are now regulated under the Companies Act 1985, and form the constitution of the

In the House of Lords it was held that the plaintiff could not rely on the said article, when the
company terminated his employment, as he was suing in his capacity of a solicitor, i.e. enforcing
an outsider right, which did not affect the constitutional rights of the shareholders even though he
was also a shareholder.
The second principle was established in the case of Foss v Harbuttle . The rule being stated by
Griffin in the following way:
An individual shareholder has no absolute right to seek redress for a wrong purportedly committed
against the company in which he is a member. The company in such an instance is the proper
plaintiff to instigate such an action. Whether the company proceeds with the action will depend
upon the will of the general meeting and its board of directors. Only in exceptional circumstances
will the court interfere with a decision taken by the company to sanction the alleged wrongful act.
There are two parts to this doctrine; firstly that the courts will not interfere in the internal
management of the company. The grounds for this lie in the principle that the majority
shareholders should be able to decide whether a

The Effects Of Mandatory Minimum Sentencing On The United...
People in The United States have been affected by the prison system, it has saved many lives,
but on the other hand, people have prosecuted for minor crimes, to end up spending a lot of time
in jail, which breaks apart families for far too long, it also creates a big rift between the people of
this fine nation and their distrust of the law. Back in the 1980s, President Ronald Reagan has
issued a law that has cut funding for the mental institutions in the United states as called the
deinstitutionalization of mental health, and to show ways of how we can bring our mental health
system into place. Also in the same era laws have been put in place to put harsher laws on drug
offenders called mandatory minimum sentencing, some people like non violent, first time drug
offender are being treated the same way as a drug lord, and a way that we can fix that is push laws
in congress to loosen minimum sentencing. Not to forget to mention the death penalty, how
taxpayers are wasting our money on keep prisoners on death row. Having a poor mental health
system, strict mandatory minimum sentencing, racial bias in our prisons, and death penalty laws
has led people to enter our prisonsystem wrongfully. By fixing those rules we can help our society
grow, and achieve greatness by doing right to our prison system.
Dismantling our mental health has led to an increase of prisoners in the united states. Instead to
putting people mental asylums, we are putting them in prison, and that is all

Analysis Of The Odissi Dance From Dominican Republic

Indian Dance
Due : 6 January 2017
Differences Bring You Closer
For centuries upon centuries, dance has been used as a form as expression. Whether it be
religiously to please and entertain the gods, or as a form of entertainment for the townspeople, dance
has brought joy to countless people. Because dance doesn t leave a written history trail it is
assumed, but not proven, to have originated over 2500 years ago. However, dance continues to
evolve even today. Take for example the odissi dance from India that is almost two thousand years
old versus the bachata dance from Dominican Republic that is only about 50 years old. Both of
these dances originated in complete separate parts of the world at very ... Show more content on

Odissi dance was held to a very high esteem not only by commoners, for even royalty were
expected to be great dancers of this kind. However, as a sensual dance of great passion, love, and
joy, it doesn t come to be a great surprise that after the 17th century odissi dance took a turn for
the worse. The dancers went from being admired to being known as prostitutes and whores; it
was a dark time for odissi dance as it came very close to being extinct. Nevertheless, India
Independence Day marked an enormous change due the recognition that culture and dance was
essential to unifying India once again. Many individuals then set out to revive odissi dance for the
better (Nirmal). Odissi dance has since then taken on many different forms and has even split into
three different schools: mahari, nartaki, and gotipua. Mahari dance is the traditional form of odissi
used in rituals; narthaki dance was developed in the royal courts; and gotipua dance is the form of
odissi where males wear female costumes and assume those roles (Courtney).
One of the main differences between these dances is the purpose and symbolism. While odissi
dance has been used for entertainment it is a classical temple dance. It is used in rituals and has
originally been created for the Divine, bachata on the other hand is the complete opposite. It
symbolizes freedom from one of the worst dictatorships Dominican Republic has ever seen and a
freedom of speech they

An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser
The American Dream has been the subject of countless American novels since it first was
concepted. Though the specifics have evolved over time, and it is unique to each person, the
general idea has stayed the same: become rich, retire early, own a large home and high quality
items. In the book, An American Tragedy, main character Clyde Griffiths is one of many who
pine for the American dream, wanting . . . the fine clothes, the handsome homes, the watches,
rings, pins that someboys sported . . . (Dreiser 19) and a high class social status not to mention the
benefits that coincide with being high class.. However, regardless of how much Griffiths dreamed
his dream, he was never to achieve it. Throughout An American Tragedy, the sentiment that Clyde
Griffiths was not meant to live the American Dream echoed numerous times in how he was
raised, the era in which the novel is set, and the unique personality which clearly defined his
character. A huge factor which determined the plot of the book was the method by which Griffiths
was raised. In the first five chapters of An American Tragedy, Clyde s home life is portrayed.
Griffiths was a young boy who was born into a low class family, and whose life centered on
Evangelical teaching. Growing up, his parents constantly barraged him with their strong religious
beliefs, and enforced their morals with great force and conviction. Unfortunately, they raised Clyde
by using the authoritarian parentingmethod, contributing greatly to

Livy s Greed In Rome
From the beginning, Rome has made it known that they are a force to be reckoned with. It is a
state built upon lust, treachery and deceit, but most importantly Rome is founded on the power
struggle and overwhelming amount of greed that inhabits every roman that follows its legacy. Livy
makes it clear to his audience that the Roman soldiers are a force to be reckoned with, even from
their earliest beginnings. Through his tellings of the story of Romulus and Remus, and the Rape
and Theft of the Sabine women, Livy also details the ruthlessness that this greed entails, by quite
explicit means. The first story that Livy introduces sets the scene for Rome, as we are shown the two
founding brothers: Romulus and Remus. It starts out simple enough,

The Easter Vigil
For the Easter vigil I attended at the Ross Hall Chapel at 7:30 pm at the University of St. Mary
on Saturday, April 15th. Although this was my third time going to this chapel I still felt a little
lost how the Chapel did their services. From how the service was structured, to certain prayers I
felt overwhelmed with the many sacraments that were done that night. This time I prepared
myself to leave on time and reached the church ten minutes early. As I was heading to the chapel
area I saw many of the attendees walking out of the chapel. At first, I thought I was late, so I
asked if I the service had ended. They told me, no and they were heading to the front of the
building for the blessing of the fire. They said I could head into the chapel pick a seat, and then
meet with them at the front. So I entered the chapel picked up a booklet and headed to the front.

What if I never saw the movie Jaws? Would I still feel the same way about sharks and the ocean?
These are some of the questions I feel a lot of people can ask themselves after they have seen Jaws.
What does this mean? Can the shark in Jaws represent or symbolize something more than just being
a hungry shark?
I remember watching Jaws as a kid, as you can imagine I was pretty scared. I think I was eleven at
the time, and was living in San Diego. So going to the beach looking for seashells and
swimming in the water was a regular thing to me, not after that movie! It wasn t till I was an

The story would be from the sharks point of view. The shark who has been separated from his
family and friends very young, is looking for a friend or companionship. And since there are no
other sharks around he finds a beach with strange creatures on it that are swimming in the water.
But every time he gets close to try and interact with one of the humans his eyes go black and he
attacks them ferociously. After the water has settled he awakens from his blackout only to see
red water and people screaming. He has no idea what happened and is just as scared as everyone
else. It is a story of self realization. That way you could still have that fear element but every
once and a while throw in a joke or have a funny scene among the chaos. I also think I would
represent the police chief as the villain. Like most live performances lighting would be a key
factor. For underwater scenes a blue light with of ocean props would be shown. The town would
also be a dark and dreary place to live. The beach is the only beautiful part of the town which is
why people are drawn to it even though people keep dying. The only thing I can t make my mind
up about is whether or not the shark would look realistic or a man in a shark suit. Overall I
would focus heavily on the emotional struggle of a shark who just wants to have a friend but
keeps eating them. And a police chief who want nothing more in life but to kill the deadliest shark

Love Me Tinder By Henrick Karoliszyn Essay
Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter, tumblr, Instagram, Tinder all of these most likely sound a little

story as to how Tinder came to be, along with some personal experiences of the people involved in
the earlier development of the application. The discussion centers around the ever changing motion
of romantic and social domains in response to online dating sites like Tinder, where people can get
together for regular hook ups or casual dates, among other things, without commitment or the
complications of things getting too serious. Witt wonders what this foreshadows for the human
connection through the online world where people are just constantly connecting, but at the same
time, not really connecting either. In Precognitive Policeby Henrick Karoliszyn, he discusses a
different and, in a lot of ways, the more troubling consequences of computer technology in his

they commit crimes, raising a countless number of questions concerning the fourth amendment. But
there is an issue an issue of us dehumanizing each other. Nowadays, our first impressions of people

Desalination has been used for thousands of years Greek sailors boiled water to evaporate fresh
water away from the salt and Romans used clay filters to trap salt. Today s sophisticated methods

potential to be more efficient than MSF, it took a while longer to make the MED process efficient

CYBR 610 T301 Risk Management Studies (2171 1)
Professor Steven Maestas October 17, 2016
Case Study Draft2 Abstract A case study is a situation of events that involves a real or
hypothetical scenario that includes real life problems if ever one to occur. Case studies are one
of the most beneficial problem solving techniques a business can invest in because they can help
improve decision making and help to identity flaws in current systems. Analyzing case studies
requires critical thinking and knowledge of the subject in order to predict the outcome. For any
business to learn from a case study the best practice is to be put in a situation, but to understand
the value acting it out as if it s really happening is where it is effective. The case study The
Olympics and the risks that comes with it below details the issues of risk and how critical thinking,
knowledge and patience can apply to mitigate threats that can have significant impact.

in the Newport Mercury newspaper in 1767, six years after she was captured to work as a slave. I
greatly venerate Phillis Wheatley, consequently because she had a wall that she climbed over. She
was not treated equally, nevertheless, she only lived with her birth family for 7 years. Amazingly,
Wheatley had lots of difficulties in her lifetime, but she never gave up, and that s what matters.
Wheatley was seized from Gambia, West Africa when she was about seven years old. She was
transported to the Boston docks with a shipment of refugee slaves. She was enslaved by a Boston
commercialist John Wheatley and Susanna Wheatley. When Phillis was transferred, she became
terribly frail and ill. After discovering the girl s precociousness, the Wheatleys did not entirely
excuse Wheatley from her domestic duties but taught her to read and write. Wheatley indicated that
despite this exposure, rich and unusual for an American slave, her brain just begged for the
intellectual challenge of a more challenging curriculum. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rather than punish her, the Wheatleys encouraged her to be more educated about literature. Their
daughter tutored her in reading and writing. Wheatley also studied Latin and the Bible, but her
best skill was to write poems. In effect, she got her first poem published in the newspaper. Later in
her life, Phillis traveled to London to meet Selina Hasting. They were not able to meet in person,
but the Countess helped Wheatley publish a volume of her poetry in

Stephanie Myers Imagination Essay
Imagination is the ability to come up with pictures, images, or scenarios in your mind that fulfill
your innermost needs and desires. Imagination is very important in young kids and young adults.
There are many forms of imagination that can found in young adult pieces, from movies to books,
and so much more. Stephanie Myers has the best young adult book imagination which is developed
through her series Twilight.
Stephanie Myers is a young adult book author who has written numerous works of fiction. One
book series that she is mostly known for is her vampire romance, Twilight. Soon after Stephanie
released the first book in the series, Twilight , she would become a worldwide known author. The
idea for the Twilight Saga came to Stephanie in a dream, according to an article by Kira ... Show

Throughout reading each book, you will begin to hate or love certain characters based upon what
Stephanie imagines that character to do or say. She also uses imagination in the way each character
interacts in each scene. Each character is described so well in each scene that it is almost as if the
readers can imagine the scene happening right in front of them. Nonetheless, imagination is more
than evident in the way Stephanie uses characterization in each of the books. The truth is, is that
there are numerous fiction romance novels in the world today but there are certain authors that can
really put their imagination into words. Stephanie Myers does a great job of that in her series
Twilight. Imagination can be found all around us, but it is what we pay attention to that really has

Accounting is connected with decisions that are both complicated an ethical in nature, and hence, it

Sociological Theories Of Prejudice And Racism
Sociological Theories of Prejudice and Racism
Functionalist theory argues for race and ethnic relations to be functional and thus supply to the
melodic conduct and strength of society, racial and ethnic minorities must assimilate into that
society. Assimilation is a process by which a minority becomes socially, economically, and
culturally absorbed within the dominant society. The assimilation perspective assumes that to
become fully fledged members of society, alternative groups must adopt as much of the dominant
society s culture as possible, particularly its language, mannerisms, and goals for success, and thus
give up much of its own culture. Assimilations stands in contrast to racial cultural pluralism the

Each step enables the next, as people learn by doing. In most cases, people do not get to the later
steps without receiving support for their behavior in the earlier ones. Verbal antagonism includes
casual racial slurs and disparaging racial comments, either in or out of the target s presence. By
themselves such comments may not be regarded as serious enough to be unlawful (balanced
against concerns about freedom of speech), but they constitute a clear form of hostility.
Subtle, Unconscious, Automatic Discrimination
Even as a national consensus has developed that explicit racial hostility is abhorrent, people may
still hold prejudicial attitudes, stemming in part from past U.S. history of overt prejudice. Although
prejudicial attitudes do not necessarily result in discriminatory behaviour with adverse effects, the
persistence of such attitudes can result in unconscious and subtle forms of racial discrimination in
place of more explicit, direct hostility. Such subtle prejudice is often abetted by differential media
portrayals of nonwhites versus whites, as well as de facto segregation in

How Did Religion Lead To The Rise Of The American Revolution
The foremost denominations within America before the country s independence were
Congregationalists, Anglicans, Presbyterians, Quakers, Methodist and Baptists. These are referred
to as the orthodox denominations. Roman Catholics were in a small community in Maryland as
well has Catholic Indian missions. However, the Congregationalists, Anglicans, Quakers and
Presbyterians were the raining sects in America. During the Revolution, including the
Confederation years, church attendance dramatically dropped. The Enlightenment consisted of
multiple philosophers that were able to convince Americans that thinking on one s own was enough
for truth and reason. The philosophers stated how the Bible was a book of contradictions; with its
wisdom, in addition to mythology and irrational nonsense. After the revolution, the Anglican
Church took another hit with decline in membership. Most of their ministers had been Loyalist to

Each year, thousands of people choose to spend their vacation in the outdoors camping. There are

Frogs and Wasps by Aristophanes
In the Frogs and Wasps written by the eminently best comedian of the fifth century, Aristophanes,
we see he utilized humour to exact the important message that Athens is corrupt, and on the verge
of chaos. The Athenian audience would expect to be thrust into a world of humour in the City
Dionysia, somewhere parallel to their own (e.g. the Athenian jury in the Wasps , and the failings of
the government in Frogs ). It is vital, then, that Aristophanesconveys his political and social views
through slapstick, farce, and caricature to interest the audience. This is an important component in
both plays as the audience is able to simultaneously accept his diplomatic views whilst being
entertained. After all his main point for producing his plays were to produce something with a little
fable, with a moral .
The Wasps is an absurd play, and in most of the parts, we see a lot of satiric, scatological parody
in a viciously Anti Cleon portrayal of the judicial system. Aristophanes intent is didactic (lesson
like) as he teaches his political view that Cleon s aggression towards Sparta would lead to war.
Comedy was key to the portrayal of his political message about the judicial system as it was a
very serious idea; therefore it is a key component in lightening up his difficult to swallow ideas.
The comedy is initiated with three simultaneous attacks at Cleonymus. Firstly, the simple effect of
a pun is used, as the word aspis has the double meaning of a snake as well as a

CMOS DESIGN AND ANALYSIS OF ULTRA WIDE BAND RECEIVERS

Ultrawide band is a unique technology which is used for commercial communications. In this ,I

RF SAW pre filter, which removes out of band interferer, and a notch filter centered at 5
GHZ UNII band relaxes receiver dynamic range. Large bandwidth of the UWB signal rces use of
RF front end with low gain compared to narrow band systems. As a result, baseband channel select
filter must have very small input referred noise. Furthermore, baseband filter requires high
attenuation and a very accurate and steep roll off to further limit interfering signal strength, which
limits dynamic range of the subsequent ADC.
Synthesizer implementation must limit spurious tones at the output of the synthesizer, which can
transform interferers into the wanted frequency band. The remainder of this section deals with more
detailed system specifications.

device operating in the first three band groups with nine bands, the required system NF can be 9
db taking into account the coding gain. A margin of 3 dB is added to set the NF specification for
the receiver as 6 dB. This margin is set after system level simulation taking into account the
following combined non idealities: 1) 5 degrees in phase and 1 dB in amplitude of
I/Q imbalance; 2) 5 bits of effective ADC quantization; 3) 9 dB of clipping in the signal peak to

Technology is the best way to reduce the impact of an earthquake to what extent do you agree with
this view? (40 marks)
An earthquake is a sudden violent shaking of the ground, typically causing great destruction, as a
result of movements within the earth s crust or volcanic action. Impacts of an earthquake can
include short term impacts such as fatalities, or long term impacts such as income lost through lack
of tourism. Technology can be used to predict the likelihood of an earthquake occurring in a
particular area, for example by detecting plate movement, and this can reduce the impacts of an
earthquake in return. This essay will discuss whether technology is the best way to reduce the
impact of an earthquake or not.

Tsunamis are usually caused by tectonic displacement of the ocean floor often resulting in an
underwater earthquake. This happened on Boxing Day in 2004 in the Indian Ocean where there
was a 1000km thrust fault from a release of stress along the constructive destructive plate boundary.
No technology was in place to detect such a disaster and, although scientists knew a tsunami was
likely to hit Southern Asia, most of the warnings were too late and the first TV broadcasts in
Thailand even happened after the waves had hit. Up to 290,000 people were killed and thousands
of bodies are still missing to this day. Since this disaster, a tsunami warning systemhas been put in
place in the Indian Ocean and technology such as this is almost guaranteed to prevent such a high
death toll for the future. There is a strong argument that if such technology was implemented before
2004, then thousands of lives could have been saved through evacuation and similar measures.
Technology is the best way to reduce the impacts of earthquakes because they can predict a
upcoming earthquake, allowing residents of an area time to evacuate to safe land, saving many
lives. However, there are many other ways of reducing the impacts of earthquakes and technology
has its limitations.
The effectiveness of earthquake monitoring and warning systems are limited as many authorities
choose to ignore warning signs to avoid disruption to businesses and

Tom Robbins Jitterbug Perfume Essay
Tom Robbins Jitterbug Perfume
In his 1984 novel Jitterbug Perfume, Tom Robbins presents a narrative that rivals the often
fantastical tales told in myth. Using classical mythology as a foundation, and, in particular,
providing a loose adaptation of The Odyssey by Homer, Robbins updates and modifies characters
and concepts in an effort to reinforce the importance of the journey of life and the discovery of self.
Like the ancient myth makers, Robbins commands the reader s attention with outrageous situations
and events while at the same time providing characters that the reader can relate to and learn from.

years. The protagonist, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore, the beet as the grounded moon boat calls to mind Odysseus s various nautical
incidents and accidents (1). This discourse is chapter one of four brief chapters that introduce
the modern day characters, much as Homer begins his epic with the four books that acquaint us
with the people and the situation in Ithica. Each work is told retrospectively by a third person
omniscient narrator, and the adventures of Alobar and Kudra are relayed primarily through
flashbacks, much as the story of Odysseus is told. Homer s use of Athena as a character whose
presence permeates and drives the action of the epic is mirrored, albeit perversely, by Robbins use
of the beet as a similar character, an entity that permeates and affects the lives of the characters in
the book. The novel, as does the epic, ends with all the primary characters coming together to effect
a satisfying conclusion.
A key to understanding his writing, says author Tom Robbins, is a knowledge of Greek myth. A
particular influence on him is the life and work of Joseph Campbell, author of several books on
mythology (Hoyser and Stookey 9). Campbell, in turn, owes influence to the insights of analytic
psychologist Carl Jung. Jung recognized the patterns within myths throughout the world and across
all cultures of characters, situations, and events, and identified these recurring images as archetypes
(Harris and Platzner 40). Campbell

Of Gods And Romans Essay
Of Gods and Romans
The Romans during the time of their Republic relied on their advanced technology, social structure,
leadership and politics to achieve as much as they did. To these people, their gods affected all of
these factors and the relationships mankind had with them. The contractual relationship between
mankind and the gods involved each party in giving, and in return receiving services. The Romans
believed that spirits residing in natural and physical objects had the power to control the processes
of nature, and that man could influence these processes by symbolic action. The first is a primitive
form of religious creed; the second a type of magic.

Any unintentional deviation from the prescribed ritual meant not only a new sacrifice, but also an
additional one to absolve the error. In high occasions, on which a replay of the entire ceremony
might be an embarrassment, a sacrifice was performed as a matter of course on the pervious day,
to cover for any potential errors during the main ceremony. Multiple sacrifices were commonplace:
the word hecatomb, which derives from the Greek, means the sacrifice of a hundred head of oxen.
There was a distinction between signs that were solicited and those that appeared without
invitation. At many times, an individual would see an omen that gave him/her confidence to
continue a current course of action (52) other incidences produced warnings to change one s
itinerary (55, 74 75). The more startling or unexpected the sign, for instance a sudden flash of
lightning or an epileptic fit on the part of a member of an assembly, the more seriously it was
taken. It was not unknown for an interested party to throw a feigned fit in order to obstruct
proceedings. Lightning which appeared while auspices were being taken was good news, but not
so if it came otherwise. Certain omens such as scorpions fighting (55), sacrificing an animal that
does not appear to have a heart (303), or bizarre natural occurrences (74 75) were signs of disaster.
The gods also produced omens through the actions of men. When a child

The Theory Of Cognitive Approach On Eating Disorders
Eating Disorders (ED) are a real epidemic plaguing industrialized and developed societies,
affecting mostly adolescents and young adults (Benas Gibb 2011). In general, the flawed
thinking of people suffering from such diseases is characterized by an obsession with perfection
of the body. The impact that eating disorders have on women has always been more prevalent
than on males. (Benas Gibb 2011; Polivy Herman 2002). The culture bound syndromes are
constellations of signs and symptoms, that are restricted to certain the cultural pressure to lose
weight, which is considered a key element of the etiology of these disorders, therefore, along with
biological, psychological and family factors have been generating an excessive preoccupation with
the body, an abnormal fear of becoming fat and anxiety markedly accompanied by changes in the
body schema. These are therefore the characteristics of Bulimia Nervosa(BN) and Anorexia Nervosa
(AN). The following ten literature review attempt to demonstrate and support the theory of
cognitive approach on eating disorders, briefly understanding the neurobiological mechanisms.
Eating Disorders are defined as deviations of eating behavior that can lead to extreme weight loss
(cachexia) or obesity, among other physical problems and disabilities. The main types of eating
disorders are Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa. These two diseases are closely related
because they represented some symptoms in common: a prevalent idea involving

Movement and Stasis in the Divine Comedy Essay
Movement and Stasis : The use of dynamics in the Divine Comedy
Movement is a crucial theme of the Divine Comedy. From the outset, we are confronted with the
physicality of the lost Dante, wandering in the perilous dark wood. His movement within the
strange place is confused and faltering; `Io non so ben ridir com io v entrai . Moreover, it is
clear that the physical distress he is experiencing is the visible manifestation of the mental
anguish the poet is suffering. The allegory of the image is one of mid life crisis, but it is
physically represented by the man losing his way in a dark wood. Such an observation may seem
far too simple and obvious to be worthy of comment. However, I would argue that it is from this

The first passage is probably the most famous in the whole work, that of Francesca da Rimini, in
Canto V of the Inferno . Condemned for her inconstancy, that is to say her lust, Francesca is
contained in the eternal whirlwind of the `bufera infernale , alongside her lover, Paolo. In a clear
parallel to her sin, she is buffeted by the inconstant wind. Although unceasing, the wind changes
direction and force, a movement which is mirrored by the language used to describe it:
Di qua, di l #224;, di gi #249;, di su li mena;
nulla speranza li conforta mai,
non che di posa, ma minor pena.
(43 45, Canto V, Inf.)
In addition to the basic rhyme of the terza rima, the internal rhyme is carefully manipulated to
imitate phonologically the swirling of the wind. By balancing the repeated [a] of `di qua, di la
with the [u:] of the `di gi #249;, di su , Dante is able to mimic the up and down movement of the air.
Francesca, then, is an extremely `mobile sinner. Although pausing to speak to Dante (the
significance of which will be later discussed), she is compelled to move indeed, it is an integral
part of her punishment. This compulsion is significant. Through rejecting a life of constancy on
earth, whether willingly or otherwise, Francesca has sacrificed the free will she was allowed to
exert on her body. Having lost control of herself in life she is plunged into the chaos of the `bufera
. Her punishment then, is not merely an

The Comprehensive State Groundwater Protection Program is another action taken by the EPA to

many of the state water regulations are more strict than federal regulations.
Many people argue that the standards of this program should be tightened to remove more
contaminants from water. What most of these people don t realize is that some of the contaminants,

Midsummer Night s Dream Love
Sitting on a porch swing with one s true love hugging and kissing as the moon smiles down upon

the truth. Shakespeare presents the truth about true love in his comical tragedy A Midsummer
Night s Dream. Lysander clearly stated loves situation when he told Hermia the course of true
love never did run smooth (Griffiths 94). In some ways Lysander s declaration becomes the play s
structural and thematic point by which Shakespeare uses to explore the storms of love (Bloom 12).

me, lose me; only give me leave, / Unworthy as I am, to follow you (Griffiths 130). Shakespeare,
no doubt included this to show how pathetic and deperate a person can be, and the things they will

the world today.
Titania states that these are the forgeries of jealousy and this becomes another theme of love for
Shakespeare to play on (Griffiths 124). Oberon is jealous of the love Titania has for a little
Indian boy that she takes care of, and he wants this Indian boy and all of Titania s love (Griffiths
125). In order to get what he wants, Oberon is going to punish [Titania] by putting the juice of
Cupid s flower on her eyelids so that when she wakes up she will fall in love with a hideous

pleases Oberon. When Oberon reverses the spell and Titania realizes her actions, she subsides to

A Good Teacher As A Teacher
A great teacher like Mrs. Lee does not just teach students but has the remarkable ability to

lucky enough to have had some very good teachers along the way. The perquisite for me having
all those good teachers is I always knew what I wanted to do with my life. As a student, it was
advantageous to have a teacher that can have such an impact on me.
Mrs. Lee was my eight grade English Teacher. She was a powerful influencer for me because her
style of teaching turned learning into an enjoyment. Mrs. Lee made learning very feasible. An
example of this is I had often spent hours deliberating over homework and still felt utterly
clueless. She had influenced me to not stop at a barrier but, to overcome it to the best of my
ability. Often, I felt as if Mrs. Lee was the little voice in my head chanting me on to the finish line.
She cared about each of her students as individuals. Just like a parent, she would constantly
express words of gratitude. She would come in early or stay after school. I would come in regularly
in the morning, to which I remembered the smell of warm coffee and sweet peppermints. Even the
smell of her eloquent perfume was comforting to me. Mrs. Lee wanted all her students to succeed,

Mccormick Tribune Campus Center Case Study
The McCormick Tribune Campus Center has two primary components, the one story building that
has multiple different activities for students and guests, and the long stainless steel tube that is
placed directly above the roof of the building. The function of the steel tube is that it is designed to
greatly muffle the noise and vibration generated by the passing commuter trains. According to IIT,
the tube muffles the train noise noise from an average 120 dB to about 70 80 dB outside the
building, about 70 dB inside the building. Soundwaves are caused by disturbances in the air. These
disturbances are usually caused by a vibrating object. In the case of the MTCC, the CTA train
railroad is right above the MTCC. As the train is traveling along

Preventing Child Abuse Essay
People may not be aware, but any one of their peers, friends, or neighbors may be victims of child
abuse. Every day, someone experiences physical, emotional, neglect, and/or sexual abuse. Abuse
can lead to death or injury for the rest of a victim s life, from either the perpetrator or themselves.
In order to prevent child abuse society must: recognize the types of abuse, understand common
causes of abuse, know the characteristics of abusers, and realize the effects abuse has, not just on
the child, but on families and communities across the world. Child abuse prevention must first
begin with understanding the different types of abuse. The Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment
Act (CAPTA) defines abuse as the motive, act, or lack of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I think that there are other ways for disciplining such as setting consequences for behavior that
could include time out, losing privileges such as: taking TV away, taking movies away, taking
events away, things like that, or creating behavioral charts for rewards systems. I think that they
have better advantages to them than actual physical punishment or consequences (Rehm n.p.).
Pennsylvania describes emotional abuse as an action or failure to act that leads to a mental
injury of a child (Clark 352). It also includes refusing to give a child his/her treatment for medical
illnesses. Emotional abuse interferes with a child s ability to develop at the pace of their age
level. Emotional abuse victims tend to receive a limited or lack of attention or affection. They
are also compared to others in a negative way, constantly bombarded with insults and humiliation.
Emotional abuse also includes allowing others to verbally abuse the child (Smith and Segal 2).
Pennsylvania defines neglect as the lack of parental care or supervision for long periods of time
(Clark 351). It also consist of keeping a prescribed medicine from the child (Rein 11 12). Parents
may fail to provide essentials of life such as: nutrition, shelter, clothing, education, safety, and
medical needs (Clark 185 190). Neglect occurs within a family and often to young children not old
enough to speak. Signs of neglect

Boating Research Paper
Summer brings great weather which means an increase in recreational boating activity, there can
be many dangers while boating, both from forces outside your boat and from things on your boat.
Here are some suggestions for staying safe on the water during the boating season. The number
one tip for staying safe out on the water is to always wear a life jacket while boating. You should
make sure that there are enough personal flotation devices (PFDs) readily accessible on your boat
for everyone out on the water with you. PFDs must be Coast Guard approved, in good and
serviceable condition, and the appropriate size for the intended user. Check with your state boating

problems from you gasoline system as well. If your boat uses gasoline for electrical generation,
mechanical power, or propulsion, then you need a ventilation system. Depending on your boat, you
ll either need a natural ventilation system (a supply opening or an exhaust opening) or a powered

My Wedding Day In My Family
Chapter 7
~~~~~ ***** ~~~~~
I woke up and found myself on my bed. I was having a small headache. Throughout the entire
week, I was working on my assignments for school and I was also working on the day care centre.
Today is my wedding day so I also had to get my wedding dress and man; I was so busy in the
week days. I am kind of glad that our wedding is on the weekend.
I got out of the bed and went to the washroom and got freshened. I came out of the washroom and
heard the door knock. Juni, I got your wedding dress. Open the door. I heard sis say.
I sighed and opened the door, finding sis looking excited and she was holding my wedding dress.
Even though, I went with her to choose the wedding dress, I really didn t pay any attention when
sis was choosing my wedding dress. I mean, we are only getting married because of the twins and
I never even wanted to get married. So, why would I have any interest in choosing my wedding
dress?
I let sis come in my room and she hugged me and then pushed me in the washroom, giving me my
wedding dress.
Juni, get dress so that we can do your make up. Sis said. I sighed and wore my wedding dress that
was silver and it was a mermaid wedding dress style.
After a couple of hours . . .
Don t open your eyes yet, I heard my makeup artist say. She was doing my eye make up, while
some other hair dresser was doing my hair. Now, slowly open your eyes. My makeup artist said.
I opened my eyes and looked at the mirror they placed in front of me and I couldn t believe my
eyes. I was wearing a simple mermaid silver wedding dress, a bit of make up and my long hair was
tied in a simple bun. I was wearing a silver necklace and a pair of long silver earrings. I couldn t
believe that I looked that pretty.
My Juni looks beautiful. Sis said as she hugged me. She had waters in her eyes.
I turned around and whipped her tears. Sis? Why are you crying?
I am really happy for you. I m happy that you are getting married but I always thought of you as
my own sister. I will be so lonely without you in this house. I will miss you. Sis said as she hugged
me.
I will miss you too. I said as I hugged her back.
Big brother came in the room with Clara and hugged me and kissed my forehead. My
Essay on Byron s Don Juan
Byron s Don Juan No Formal Ending is Needed
Lord Byron s chief masterpiece is probably the comic epic Don Juan, which occupied its author
from 1818 until nearly the end of his life (Trueblood 14 15). The sheer length of the poem is in
itself impressive; its seventeen cantos take Juan through a variety of adventures, including the
famous affair with Donna Julia, the sojourn with Haidee, experiences in Turkey and later in Russia
as a slave, and finally episodes in England among high society (Boyd 22 30). Remarkably, however,
Don Juan as Byron left it is obviously unfinished. Further, the poem was not published in an
absolutely complete form until nearly eighty years after Byron s death (Steffan III 562). The
unfinished state of Don ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A great variety of conjecture is employed in them as to the fate of the poem s hero; among the
conclusions one finds Juan saving Aurora Raby from fire, travelling to Scotland, being guillotined
in the French Revolution, and turning into a reformed man who spends much of his time in prayer,
in accordance with the values of the rising Victorian period (Chew 136ff.).
But none of these seems to capture the true Byronic spirit. Samuel C. Chew, who describes these
pseudo Juans in detail, summarizes his findings:
On the whole, despite some scanty exceptions to the contrary, poverty of invention and servile
imitation of Byron s mannerisms, with no ray of his genius, characterize the entire series of
continuations . . . . [With a possible exception or two,] not one merits for its own sake even such
feeble renewal of life as is given it in the pages of this article (146 7).
The editions of the true Don Juan available in the nineteenth century certainly encouraged these
spurious sequels; they lacked the fragmentary seventeenth canto Byron had written before going to
Greece (Coleridge 1013n.). Consequently, the reader of that day was left with a far more abrupt
ending than we now have: at Canto XVI s end, Juan, who thinks he is encountering a ghost, puts
forth his hand to touch it and unmasks her frolic Grace Fitz Fulke, who has had a lustful eye on
him ever
Voltaire s Use Of Satire In Candide
Mr. Boni chose this book for our class in order to provide us with a first hand example of the
views of the Enlightenment period philosopher, Voltaire. Throughout Candide, Voltaire s well
known satire, we are exposed to his sharp witted criticisms of the church, nobility, religion, and
philosophy. Using misfortune as well as comic relief, Candide, holds the interest of its readers
while educating them in Enlightened views. For the use of our current studies, this novel is a
brilliant bridge between the witty words of one man s views of the world and the history in which
it is surrounded. It represents the author s unabridged view on mankind s lack of necessary
development as a result of the Enlightenment, staying true to his aversions of religious... Show more
Voltaire satirizes numerous social norms of his time using recurring themes throughout the novel.
With his every present sardonic writing, Voltaire addresses issues regarding religion, social
structure, women s rights, and unrelenting optimism. He ridicules religion for its corruption and
intolerance. No religion went unscathed as Voltaire took shots at many of the main sects of religion
including Protestantism, Catholicism, and Anabaptism. He also took shots at elitist nobility and the
unfair women s rights of the time, using irony to show the uselessness of the unjust systems and
privileges (or lack thereof). In addition, Voltaire made light work of philosophical optimism, an
idea highly popularized by German theorist Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibnitz. It was thought that
God created a perfect world and therefore, God would not cause anything to happen if not for a
greater outcome. Voltaire, an atheist in his own right, thought this absurd and wished to educate his
readers of this through his fast paced
Career Mode And Single Player
The guitar was once considered a folk music instrument, but it now also qualifies as a videogame
controller. Thanks to a collaborative effort from RedOctane, Harmonix and MTV Games, the genre
of gigantic interactive controllers is no longer confined to dance pads, imitation firearms and the
slightly disturbing chainsaw that now comes with Resident Evil 4. GuitarHero for PlayStation 2
costs a mean $70, including all the essentials for videogame musicians: game guitar shaped
controller, instruction book and shoulder strap. The pieces can all be purchased separately, but
the intrinsic flaw with the game is that none of the parts will function properly if used out of
context of the others. The game itself offers straight forward directives and single minded
progression. Like all games you must pick your character and difficulty level, revealing that a
myriad of different songs and extra guitar related pickings must be unlocked by mastering various
degrees of button mashing prowess. The player is then granted several options: tutorials, career
mode and single player. Career mode is the only way to unlock any extras, meaning that any other
fidgeting around will only make you so familiar with the same five songs that you won t be able to
stand hearing them on the radio every again. Game play consists mainly of watching colored land
mine style targets stream along the screen and hitting the indicated color keys as they reach their
Problems Of Using Big Data Help Us Understand What...
What are the problems in using big data to help us understand what customers want?
Introduction
Big data, defined as a popular term used to describe the exponential growth and availability of
data (What is Big Data? , n. d. ), has attracted considerable interest in many fields as it promises to
offer a level of analytic detail that has not been reached so far. Whilst it is often promoted as the
solution to many marketing problems, it has some significant disadvantages. Cost, personnel,
problems relating to the interpretation of the data and difficulties deciding how to apply the new
knowledge to existing products and product design are all important problems.
Velocity. Massive data should be dealt with in time otherwise the quality of data will lose.
Probably, Big Data can be the future of marketing. However, there are some problems in using
Big Data because of these characteristics. If we don t know how to address problems, the
investment will be wasted but enterprises still search around in the haystack for the needle.
Therefore, I will illustrate the problems and find out some solutions for Big Data.
Problems
Firstly, the main problem is deciding which data should be selected. The data, explaining customers
desire and need, is important to be collected while most of the businesses are confusing what data
they should concentrate on. A recent Gartner report (2014) stresses that 64% of firms raced to plan
or launch a Big Data project, though they didn t have enough professional knowledge yet. To
understand what customers need through Big Data possibly turns into the core of companies
target. The large data volumes and different varieties of data lead to complexity.
Secondly, the result predicted by Big Data probably isn t true at last. (MARCUS, DAVIS.
2014).This phenomenon doesn t happen by accident in many companies. Take Google Flu Trends
as an example, they predicted that the Disease Control and Protection Center wasn t able to control
the flu spread quickly and effectively as time went on. Later, this conclusion was proved wrong.
Hence, it means that future prediction contains inconsistencies
Paraphilia Research Paper
Most people that have paraphilic disorder are male and they are most likely to participate in such
behavior between the ages of 15 and 25. The most common sexual paraphilia is sexual
masochism. Women are less likely to be diagnosed with his disorder. Disorders can occur
regardless of ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and sexual orientation (301). It is important to note
that certain terms are not scientific, but rather reflects the moral beliefs of the culture. For
example, Nymphomania is defined as abnormal or excessive sexual desire in a woman (301).
There are noncoercive paraphilias which are considered harmless and victimless. Examples are
fetishism and transvestism (307). Fetishism is when an object becomes a sexual symbol. The
object becomes important to a person s arousal. However, parts of the human body can also
conducted that involved 1,032 cross dressing men. The results of the study were, 87% were
heterosexual, 60% were married, and 65% were college educated. 60% also reported that they
Transvestic fetishism is a pathological disorder that affects some people that cross dress. It occurs
  • 2. Essay on Origins of Popular Sayings English is an amazing language that reflects many different cultures. Americans have many popular sayings and figures of speech that, if taken literally, make no logical sense. If you mention the phrases white elephant, spill the beans, or to pull someone s leg, they make no sense unless you are familiar with the culture. The word idiom is used to describe these forms of speech. Idioms are considered to be part of a nation s culture, and idioms can make learning a foreign language quite challenging. Scholars have estimated American English to contain at least 25,000 idiomatic expressions. People learning a new language must memorize the meanings of these phrases like vocabulary, because the interpretations of idioms can be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The origin of this popular saying will make you smile. In the early 1700 s an English dramatist named John Dennis created an invention that would simulate the sound of thunder in one of his theatrical productions. His play failed dismally. However, later he found that his invention was used to create the sound of thunder in another performance. Dennis was quoted as saying, They will not let my play run, but they steal my thunder! The phrase was overheard, passed along and became a popular saying used in the English language. To Spill the Beans When someone spills the beans, they reveal a secret unintentionally. This popular saying has its origin back in the days of ancient Greece. When people were voted into many organizations, the membership voted secretly using colored beans as counters. If one voted for the inclusion of the applicant, one would discretely drop a white bean into an opaque container. If one voted against the applicant, one would secretly drop a black or brown bean in the container. Only the officials knew the results of the voting. Occasionally, an awkward person might accidentally knock over the container, spilling the beans and revealing the results of the vote before the appointed time. This is how the phrase spilling the beans has come to describe someone telling a secret. To Bite the Bullet If you have to withstand ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
It is an empty canvas, glowing lustrous in the light of the splendor above. The night is ablaze in flickers of light cast scattered across the darkness. Upon this frigid expanse I stand alone from the world, but for the dead remains of cornhusks trapped beneath the ice. My skin burns from the bite of the wind, but when I glance above, caught among the stars, I am perfectly content. Growing up in the suburbs, I felt alive and yet, overwhelmed. Pulsing with electricity, the whole world was one click away, at my fingertips. A network of sights, sounds, and puzzles spread out before me, an overpowering and uncontrollable force. My life is run by schedules, planning each minute and precious second out in harsh ink. Everything must be in order, must be under control, and must have a purpose. Real life doesn t run on a schedule; even the smallest decision can alter the direction of the future. I am frightened of just how much I am unable to see, how much I might overlook and be unable to safely tuck away in the far recesses of my memories. In the suburbs so close in contact with uncontrollable chaos, I am not can never be perfectly content. Instead, I find my peace in the middle of my Grandfather s cornfields. Dependence on control defines the way I run my life. It thrives upon my unease of the unknown, and binds me from moving against of what I am afraid of. I fear ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
When subjects think of movies they consider the time people have here and now, most do not realize where has this come from, was it history, or was it just some social event that got publicity. Movies in today s society are altered to reflect the 21st century, with the technology advancements, and the way that storys are interpreted with many changes. Over the years, the movies have taken a spin off of the legends that were once told, by doing this it can be altered to compare to the society that people live in today and the technology advances.   • 6. Bernie Sanders Viewpoints After having two terms with President Obama, you would think that we would have more qualified candidates this year. The most qualified candidate in my opinion is US Senator; Bernie Sanders. He is not only qualified to be the president with years of experience in working in the government, but he has some great view points. Viewpoints that benefit the people and not only the one percent. Today, we live in the richest country in the history of the world, but that means little because much of the wealth is controlled by a tiny handful of individuals. Since the early 80 s the middle class has become poorer, and the one percent has gotten richer. There are many of Americans working long gruesome hours for little pay. But if Bernie is elected ... The author Stephen Ambrose catches a glimpse of what these heroic soldiers accomplished in his book Band of Brothers, by providing readers with interviews of first hand encounters on the battlefields of Europe, from former paratroopers that served in the 506th Regiment. Ambrose s book depicts how the spectacles of war create everlasting scars on soldiers mentally and physically, that never fully heal. Ambrose admired his father, whom was a physician and served in the Navy during World War II. This influenced Ambrose to become like his farther, but he later became passionate with history, receiving his Ph. D. from the University of Wisconsin. Ambrose admired the history of war and wanted to understand the thoughts and emotions that ran through the paratroopers minds from Toccoa, where they trained for endless days under the command of Lieutenant Sobel, to the last moments on November 30, 1945, where the 101st...   • 9. The Effects Of Mandatory Minimum Sentencing On The United... People in The United States have been affected by the prison system, it has saved many lives, but on the other hand, people have prosecuted for minor crimes, to end up spending a lot of time in jail, which breaks apart families for far too long, it also creates a big rift between the people of this fine nation and their distrust of the law. Back in the 1980s, President Ronald Reagan has issued a law that has cut funding for the mental institutions in the United states as called the deinstitutionalization of mental health, and to show ways of how we can bring our mental health system into place. Also in the same era laws have been put in place to put harsher laws on drug offenders called mandatory minimum sentencing, some people like non violent, first time drug offender are being treated the same way as a drug lord, and a way that we can fix that is push laws in congress to loosen minimum sentencing. Not to forget to mention the death penalty, how taxpayers are wasting our money on keep prisoners on death row. Having a poor mental health system, strict mandatory minimum sentencing, racial bias in our prisons, and death penalty laws has led people to enter our prisonsystem wrongfully. By fixing those rules we can help our society grow, and achieve greatness by doing right to our prison system. Dismantling our mental health has led to an increase of prisoners in the united states. Analysis Of The Odissi Dance From Dominican Republic Luisanny Molina Professor Damayanthi Indian Dance Due : 6 January 2017 Differences Bring You Closer For centuries upon centuries, dance has been used as a form as expression. Whether it be religiously to please and entertain the gods, or as a form of entertainment for the townspeople, dance has brought joy to countless people. Because dance doesn t leave a written history trail it is assumed, but not proven, to have originated over 2500 years ago. However, dance continues to evolve even today. Take for example the odissi dance from India that is almost two thousand years old versus the bachata dance from Dominican Republic that is only about 50 years old. Odissi dance was held to a very high esteem not only by commoners, for even royalty were expected to be great dancers of this kind. However, as a sensual dance of great passion, love, and joy, it doesn t come to be a great surprise that after the 17th century odissi dance took a turn for the worse. The dancers went from being admired to being known as prostitutes and whores; it was a dark time for odissi dance as it came very close to being extinct. Nevertheless, India Independence Day marked an enormous change due the recognition that culture and dance was essential to unifying India once again. Many individuals then set out to revive odissi dance for the better (Nirmal). Odissi dance has since then taken on many different forms and has even split into three different schools: mahari, nartaki, and gotipua. Mahari dance is the traditional form of odissi used in rituals; narthaki dance was developed in the royal courts; and gotipua dance is the form of odissi where males wear female costumes and assume those roles (Courtney). One of the main differences between these dances is the purpose and symbolism. While odissi dance has been used for entertainment it is a classical temple dance. It is used in rituals and has originally been created for the Divine, bachata on the other hand is the complete opposite. It symbolizes freedom from one of the worst dictatorships Dominican Republic has ever seen and a freedom of speech they ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser The American Dream has been the subject of countless American novels since it first was concepted. Though the specifics have evolved over time, and it is unique to each person, the general idea has stayed the same: become rich, retire early, own a large home and high quality items. In the book, An American Tragedy, main character Clyde Griffiths is one of many who pine for the American dream, wanting . . . the fine clothes, the handsome homes, the watches, rings, pins that someboys sported . . . (Dreiser 19) and a high class social status not to mention the benefits that coincide with being high class.. However, regardless of how much Griffiths dreamed his dream, he was never to achieve it. Throughout An American Tragedy, the sentiment that Clyde Griffiths was not meant to live the American Dream echoed numerous times in how he was raised, the era in which the novel is set, and the unique personality which clearly defined his character. A huge factor which determined the plot of the book was the method by which Griffiths was raised. In the first five chapters of An American Tragedy, Clyde s home life is portrayed. Griffiths was a young boy who was born into a low class family, and whose life centered on Evangelical teaching. Growing up, his parents constantly barraged him with their strong religious beliefs, and enforced their morals with great force and conviction. Unfortunately, they raised Clyde by using the authoritarian parentingmethod, contributing greatly to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
Livy makes it clear to his audience that the Roman soldiers are a force to be reckoned with, even from their earliest beginnings. Through his tellings of the story of Romulus and Remus, and the Rape and Theft of the Sabine women, Livy also details the ruthlessness that this greed entails, by quite explicit means. Although this was my third time going to this chapel I still felt a little lost how the Chapel did their services. From how the service was structured, to certain prayers I felt overwhelmed with the many sacraments that were done that night. This time I prepared myself to leave on time and reached the church ten minutes early. As I was heading to the chapel area I saw many of the attendees walking out of the chapel. At first, I thought I was late, so I asked if I the service had ended. They told me, no and they were heading to the front of the building for the blessing of the fire. These are some of the questions I feel a lot of people can ask themselves after they have seen Jaws. What does this mean? Can the shark in Jaws represent or symbolize something more than just being a hungry shark? I remember watching Jaws as a kid, as you can imagine I was pretty scared. I think I was eleven at the time, and was living in San Diego. So going to the beach looking for seashells and swimming in the water was a regular thing to me, not after that movie! And since there are no other sharks around he finds a beach with strange creatures on it that are swimming in the water. But every time he gets close to try and interact with one of the humans his eyes go black and he attacks them ferociously. After the water has settled he awakens from his blackout only to see red water and people screaming. He has no idea what happened and is just as scared as everyone else. It is a story of self realization. That way you could still have that fear element but every once and a while throw in a joke or have a funny scene among the chaos. I also think I would represent the police chief as the villain. Like most live performances lighting would be a key factor. For underwater scenes a blue light with of ocean props would be shown. The town would also be a dark and dreary place to live. The beach is the only beautiful part of the town which is why people are drawn to it even though people keep dying. The only thing I can t make my mind up about is whether or not the shark would look realistic or a man in a shark suit. Overall I would focus heavily on the emotional struggle of a shark who just wants to have a friend but keeps eating them. And a police chief who want nothing more in life but to kill the deadliest shark hes ever ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
The discussion centers around the ever changing motion of romantic and social domains in response to online dating sites like Tinder, where people can get together for regular hook ups or casual dates, among other things, without commitment or the complications of things getting too serious. Witt wonders what this foreshadows for the human connection through the online world where people are just constantly connecting, but at the same time, not really connecting either. In Precognitive Policeby Henrick Karoliszyn, he discusses a different and, in a lot of ways, the more troubling consequences of computer technology in his essay, where crimes can be prevented through various algorithms that can pinpoint criminals before they commit crimes, raising a countless number of questions concerning the fourth amendment. But there is an issue an issue of us dehumanizing each other. Nevertheless, it transpired at the age of seven. Phillis was the first African American to write and publish a poem. Her first poem was published in the Newport Mercury newspaper in 1767, six years after she was captured to work as a slave. I greatly venerate Phillis Wheatley, consequently because she had a wall that she climbed over. She was not treated equally, nevertheless, she only lived with her birth family for 7 years. Amazingly, Wheatley had lots of difficulties in her lifetime, but she never gave up, and that s what matters. Wheatley was seized from Gambia, West Africa when she was about seven years old. She was transported to the Boston docks with a shipment of refugee slaves. She was enslaved by a Boston commercialist John Wheatley and Susanna Wheatley. When Phillis was transferred, she became terribly frail and ill. After discovering the girl s precociousness, the Wheatleys did not entirely excuse Wheatley from her domestic duties but taught her to read and write.   • 29. Frogs and Wasps by Aristophanes In the Frogs and Wasps written by the eminently best comedian of the fifth century, Aristophanes, we see he utilized humour to exact the important message that Athens is corrupt, and on the verge of chaos. The Athenian audience would expect to be thrust into a world of humour in the City Dionysia, somewhere parallel to their own (e.g. the Athenian jury in the Wasps , and the failings of the government in Frogs ). It is vital, then, that Aristophanesconveys his political and social views through slapstick, farce, and caricature to interest the audience. This is an important component in both plays as the audience is able to simultaneously accept his diplomatic views whilst being entertained. After all his main point for producing his plays were to produce something with a little fable, with a moral . The Wasps is an absurd play, and in most of the parts, we see a lot of satiric, scatological parody in a viciously Anti Cleon portrayal of the judicial system. Aristophanes intent is didactic (lesson like) as he teaches his political view that Cleon s aggression towards Sparta would lead to war. Comedy was key to the portrayal of his political message about the judicial system as it was a very serious idea; therefore it is a key component in lightening up his difficult to swallow ideas. The comedy is initiated with three simultaneous attacks at Cleonymus. Firstly, the simple effect of a pun is used, as the word aspis has the double meaning of a snake as well as a ... Each work is told retrospectively by a third person omniscient narrator, and the adventures of Alobar and Kudra are relayed primarily through flashbacks, much as the story of Odysseus is told. Homer s use of Athena as a character whose presence permeates and drives the action of the epic is mirrored, albeit perversely, by Robbins use of the beet as a similar character, an entity that permeates and affects the lives of the characters in the book. The novel, as does the epic, ends with all the primary characters coming together to effect a satisfying conclusion. Multiple sacrifices were commonplace: the word hecatomb, which derives from the Greek, means the sacrifice of a hundred head of oxen. The Theory Of Cognitive Approach On Eating Disorders Eating Disorders (ED) are a real epidemic plaguing industrialized and developed societies, affecting mostly adolescents and young adults (Benas Gibb 2011). In general, the flawed thinking of people suffering from such diseases is characterized by an obsession with perfection of the body. The impact that eating disorders have on women has always been more prevalent than on males. (Benas Gibb 2011; Polivy Herman 2002). Condemned for her inconstancy, that is to say her lust, Francesca is contained in the eternal whirlwind of the `bufera infernale , alongside her lover, Paolo. In a clear parallel to her sin, she is buffeted by the inconstant wind. Although unceasing, the wind changes direction and force, a movement which is mirrored by the language used to describe it: Di qua, di l #224;, di gi #249;, di su li mena; nulla speranza li conforta mai, non che di posa, ma minor pena. (43 45, Canto V, Inf.) In addition to the basic rhyme of the terza rima, the internal rhyme is carefully manipulated to imitate phonologically the swirling of the wind. By balancing the repeated [a] of `di qua, di la with the [u:] of the `di gi #249;, di su , Dante is able to mimic the up and down movement of the air. Francesca, then, is an extremely `mobile sinner. Although pausing to speak to Dante (the significance of which will be later discussed), she is compelled to move indeed, it is an integral part of her punishment. This compulsion is significant. The Comprehensive State Groundwater Protection Program is another action taken by the EPA to insure safe drinking water. This program implements groundwater protection goals and standards set by the EPA. The main goal of the program is to achieve a more efficient approach to protecting groundwater resources from contamination. State government is in charge of this program, and many of the state water regulations are more strict than federal regulations. Many people argue that the standards of this program should be tightened to remove more contaminants from water. What most of these people don t realize is that some of the contaminants, lead for example, enter the water after it has already been treated. This is a problem that local water treatment officials have to deal with. Changing Federal drinking water standards won t reduce contamination from lead pipes leading to homes. Water program funding has increased 47 percent since 1990. Also, since 1984, there has been an explosion in drinking water technology. There are now more sophisticated ways of testing, controlling, and treating the drinking water. Today, these new methods have created a water system with the ability to efficiently deliver 40 million gallons of safe drinking water to our homes every day (Tolman 59). Unfortunately, nothing could be further from the truth. Shakespeare presents the truth about true love in his comical tragedy A Midsummer Night s Dream. Lysander clearly stated loves situation when he told Hermia the course of true love never did run smooth (Griffiths 94). In some ways Lysander s declaration becomes the play s structural and thematic point by which Shakespeare uses to explore the storms of love (Bloom 12). Demetrius, though, chose to pursue someone more appealing to his eye, Hermia. Now, Helena whishes to be literally translated into Hermia so as to regain Demetrius affection (Young 156). Shakespeare, no doubt included this to show how pathetic and deperate a person can be, and the things they will do to get love in return. The characteristic Shakespeare gave to Helena is sadly a characteristic in the world today. Titania states that these are the forgeries of jealousy and this becomes another theme of love for Shakespeare to play on (Griffiths 124). Oberon is jealous of the love Titania has for a little Indian boy that she takes care of, and he wants this Indian boy and all of Titania s love (Griffiths 125). In order to get what he wants, Oberon is going to punish [Titania] by putting the juice of Cupid s flower on her eyelids so that when she wakes up she will fall in love with a hideous creature (Garner 87). Puck turns Bottom into a donkey and he becomes Titania s love, which pleases Oberon. When Oberon reverses the spell and Titania realizes her actions, she subsides to his desires. School has always been important to me and I have been lucky enough to have had some very good teachers along the way. The perquisite for me having all those good teachers is I always knew what I wanted to do with my life. As a student, it was advantageous to have a teacher that can have such an impact on me. Mrs. Lee was my eight grade English Teacher. She was a powerful influencer for me because her style of teaching turned learning into an enjoyment. Mrs. Lee made learning very feasible. An example of this is I had often spent hours deliberating over homework and still felt utterly clueless. She had influenced me to not stop at a barrier but, to overcome it to the best of my ability. Often, I felt as if Mrs. Lee was the little voice in my head chanting me on to the finish line. She cared about each of her students as individuals. Just like a parent, she would constantly express words of gratitude. She would come in early or stay after school. I would come in regularly in the morning, to which I remembered the smell of warm coffee and sweet peppermints. Even the smell of her eloquent perfume was comforting to me. Essay on Byron s Don Juan Byron s Don Juan No Formal Ending is Needed Lord Byron s chief masterpiece is probably the comic epic Don Juan, which occupied its author from 1818 until nearly the end of his life (Trueblood 14 15). The sheer length of the poem is in itself impressive; its seventeen cantos take Juan through a variety of adventures, including the famous affair with Donna Julia, the sojourn with Haidee, experiences in Turkey and later in Russia as a slave, and finally episodes in England among high society (Boyd 22 30). Remarkably, however, Don Juan as Byron left it is obviously unfinished. Further, the poem was not published in an absolutely complete form until nearly eighty years after Byron s death (Steffan III 562). The unfinished state of Don ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A great variety of conjecture is employed in them as to the fate of the poem s hero; among the conclusions one finds Juan saving Aurora Raby from fire, travelling to Scotland, being guillotined in the French Revolution, and turning into a reformed man who spends much of his time in prayer, in accordance with the values of the rising Victorian period (Chew 136ff.). But none of these seems to capture the true Byronic spirit. Samuel C. Chew, who describes these pseudo Juans in detail, summarizes his findings: On the whole, despite some scanty exceptions to the contrary, poverty of invention and servile imitation of Byron s mannerisms, with no ray of his genius, characterize the entire series of continuations . . . . [With a possible exception or two,] not one merits for its own sake even such feeble renewal of life as is given it in the pages of this article (146 7). The editions of the true Don Juan available in the nineteenth century certainly encouraged these spurious sequels; they lacked the fragmentary seventeenth canto Byron had written before going to Greece (Coleridge 1013n.). Consequently, the reader of that day was left with a far more abrupt ending than we now have: at Canto XVI s end, Juan, who thinks he is encountering a ghost, puts forth his hand to touch it and unmasks her frolic Grace Fitz Fulke, who has had a lustful eye on him ever ... However, there are some problems in using Big Data because of these characteristics. If we don t know how to address problems, the investment will be wasted but enterprises still search around in the haystack for the needle. Therefore, I will illustrate the problems and find out some solutions for Big Data. Problems Firstly, the main problem is deciding which data should be selected. The data, explaining customers desire and need, is important to be collected while most of the businesses are confusing what data they should concentrate on. A recent Gartner report (2014) stresses that 64% of firms raced to plan or launch a Big Data project, though they didn t have enough professional knowledge yet. To understand what customers need through Big Data possibly turns into the core of companies target. The large data volumes and different varieties of data lead to complexity.
