Essay On The Dark Sword
The dim moonlight shone through the windows, giving life to the dancing shadows on the cold
stone floors. A small, lithe figure clad in head to toe black, and armed to the teeth strode upon
them. The only sound she made was the faint scuffle of her boots on the frigid flagstone floor. She
moved with a purpose, striding down the halls in the shadows, watching for any approaching
figures that might alert the sleeping castle to her presence.
She slowly rounded the corner, still shrouded in the shadows, ever vigilant for possible guards or
servants passing through the drafty castle halls. She approached the heavy, oaken door at the end
of the corridor that was surrounded by six attentive guards all dressed in the Black Crescent

The sleeping monarch inside the now unguarded chamber had absolutely no idea of their
impending demise. Once the assassin was in the room, she barricaded the door with a heavy
wooden chest of drawers and several chairs.
She advanced towards the bed, careful not to wake the sleeping queen, absentmindedly fiddling
with her daggers, trying to decide which one to use on the queen. At the sight of the woman lying
on the bed, her fiery hair flowing all over the pillow, her hand went to the dark jade stone at her
throat. Done with her moment of remembrance, her scarred hand jerked out and seized the queen s
pale, unmarred throat, pulling her from her slumber, and the assassin dragged her towards the
balcony, while the queen thrashed and clawed at the hands holding her throat in an iron grip. The
assailant released her prey by throwing her to the ground, the queen rolling for several feet before
hitting the stone railing on the balcony, instantly soaked by the pouring rain. As she stepped into
the howling wind and beating rain, lightning flashed and the queen saw her face, the face of
someone who should have been long dead.
You... you should be dead...How? the shocked queen stammered.
You know, Amira, when you try to have your friends killed, you should really be more thorough.
the smirking assassin replied. Maybe in your next life, you ll have the guts to kill me yourself.

Ganglion Cyst Research Paper
A ganglion cyst is a noncancerous, fluid filled lump that occurs near joints or tendons. The
ganglion cyst grows out of a joint or the lining of a tendon. It most often develops in the hand or
wrist but can also develop in the shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, ankle, or foot. The round or oval
ganglion can be pea sized or larger than a grape. Increased activity may enlarge the size of the
cyst because more fluid starts to build up. CAUSES It is not known what causes a ganglion cyst to
grow. However, it may be related to: Inflammation or irritation around the joint. An injury.
Repetitive movements or overuse. Arthritis. RISK FACTORS Risk factors include: Being a
woman. Being between the ages of 20 50. SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS... Show more content on

DIAGNOSIS Ganglion cysts are most often diagnosed based on a physical exam. Your health
care provider will feel the lump and may shine a light alongside it. If it is a ganglion, a light
often shines through it. Your health care provider may order an X ray, ultrasound, or MRI to
rule out other conditions. TREATMENT Ganglions usually go away on their own without
treatment. If pain or other symptoms are involved, treatment may be needed. Treatment is also
needed if the ganglion limits your movement or if it gets infected. Treatment may include:
Wearing a wrist or finger brace or splint. Taking anti inflammatory medicine. Draining fluid from
the lump with a needle (aspiration). Injecting a steroid into the joint. Surgery to remove the
ganglion cyst. HOME CARE INSTRUCTIONS Do not press on the ganglion, poke it with a
needle, or hit it. Take medicines only as directed by your health care provider. Wear your brace or

Emily Dickinson s Impact On American Poetry
Emily Dickinson is one of the most famous poets that has ever lived, next to Shakespeare and
Edgar Allan Poe. Interestingly, Dickinson published less than ten poems before she died. Although
Dickinson never saw any success in her lifetime, she still made a huge impact on American poetry
today. Emily and Edward Dickinson gave birth to Emily Dickinsonon December 10, 1830 (Emily
Dickinson s Bio). She was an exceptionally well educated for a woman at the time and attended
Amherst Academy for seven years. Even though Dickinson attended the seminary, she did not join
the Calvinist church, which her whole family was a part of. She struggled with the idea of original
sin and just could not accept the severity of beliefs Her rejection of

Advantages Of Audio Aided Reading Method
Audio Aided Reading Method as Instructional ScaffoldAudio aided reading method has been used
as an effective instructional intervention for students with learning disabilities and with struggling
readers. According to Evans (2010) instructional scaffolding is an instructional method that has
been proven to be successful with students with learning disabilities and poor performing readers.
Evans (2010) provided an overview of Audio Assisted Readingin which a student who has
difficulty reading print listens to an audio book, while following along in regular print, large print,
video magnified print, or Braille. This technique often helps to increase comprehension for those
who struggle to decode. It also helps to reinforce the relationship between symbols and sounds,
whether in print or Braille. Evans notes that this method allows the reader to use all multiple
sensory inputs simultaneously to acquire and process information. It has some distinct advantages
over using either print, Braille, or recorded books alone.
Evans further explain, it has some distinct advantages such as: 1) Simultaneous use helps those
with attention problems screen out competing stimuli. Some people who use recordings alone,
such as audio books, are distracted by visual stimuli in the environment. Similarly, some who use
print or Braille alone are distracted by extraneous sound. Use of headphones can boost attention; 2)
If print or Braille decoding is slow and labored, it consumes all the energy needed for
comprehension. By the time one gets to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

students read along while listening to an adult reader in a process termed the Neurological Impress

Essay Suspense in the Film Jaws
Suspense in the Film Jaws
In this essay I will be analysing the film Jaws. The film was directed by Steven Spielberg whose
other works include Indiana Jones and E.T. Jaws is a fascinating and entertaining film mainly
because of its interesting and diverse plot. The people of Amity Island used to live a peaceful and
quiet life in the small summer resort town in America. Now however, the people of the small town
have become victim to a man eating Great White Shark. The town officials hesitate to warn people
about the shark for fear of losing business during their busiest time of year, Fourth of July
weekend. Therefore the shark is kept quiet from the town until a child is attacked in broad daylight

For instance, whenever an attack occurs, the music ends up being extremely fast, then slowing
considerably and then stopping altogether resulting in complete silence. This silence after each
attack frightens the audience because they realise how quickly something awful, like the event
they have just witnessed, can happen and how quickly it can end. It also reminds them that the
shark is still out there and will continue to carry out these attacks. In addition, before the first
attack occurs a group of teenagers are having a bonfire and at this point someone is playing a
mouth organ. When the boy and the girl run off, we suddenly hear the sound of the mouth organ
gently disappearing. This shows that the two are travelling away from safety and peace into the
abyss of the dark sea where they are unaware of what is lurking there. It also signifies how alone
and desolate they are.
The second attack occurs on a crowded beach, a venue where everyone feels safe. Contrary to
popular belief this is not true though, as recent studies have shown that Great White Sharks are
often found in just three feet of water. This supposedly safe environment is emphasised with a
mid shot that gives a good perspective of a relaxed environment with people enjoying the sun and
generally having a good time. A dolly zoom on Brody shows an anxious face that is not completely

Analyzing the Juvenile Justice System
The juvenile justice system is imperfect, at best, and part of this stems from the fact that juvenile
justice, as a specific, discrete category of crime and punishment is still a relatively recent
phenomenon. In fact, the notion of childhood and adolescence as distinct phases of human
development is a novel idea that did not truly emerge until the twentieth century, so it is only
natural that some elements of the juvenile justice system seem to have been made up they went
along. Now, however, after substantial research into juvenile delinquency, it causes, and potential
solutions, a much clearer picture of the phenomenon is emerging that will allow parents, teachers,
legislators, and law enforcement officials to better reduce juvenile delinquency without imposing
unnecessarily harsh restrictions of juveniles. By examining the history of the juvenile justice
system alongside more recent research into juvenile delinquency, it will be possible to see how the
most effective treatments going forward will likely focus on reducing risk before delinquency
occurs and rehabilitating juveniles already in the justice system, as opposed to more punitive
measures that mark juveniles as a criminal and thus hinder them for the rest of their lives. It is
necessary to begin this study with a look at the history of the juvenile justice system, because as
mentioned above, the notion of childhoodand adolescence as a distinct phase of human
development, and thus deserving of special

participated in the Tour De France, and won. Armstrong would go on to win the next six

seven Tour De France titles in a row (Sanderson). According to the article Riding Along with Lance
Armstrong In June 2012 the U.S. Anti Doping Agency (USADA) filed charges against Armstrong
for violating its performance enhancing drugs (PEDS) policies and claimed to have a growing
amount of evidence against him (Sanderson). Lance Armstrong was a legendary athlete for over a

activities and use doping to win. Hidden behind the scenes of exceptional performances Lance
Armstrong was committing many unethical activities. Armstrong used performance enhancing
EPO, steroids, growth hormones, and oxygen boosting blood transfusions (Osei Hwere). Many of
these unethical activities can be classified under the categories of lying, cheating and fraud, and
abusive and intimidating behavior. The definition of lying is intending to deceive

Realists Vs. Scientific Theory
.Convergent realists often argue for their position by pointing to the increasing success of science.
This requires that there be a reasonable inference from a scientific theory s success to its
approximate truth. The argument that realists are trying to make is that the best explanation of a
scientific theorys success is that it is true. Larry Laudan refutes the realists argument from the
success of science. To do this, he characterize his opposition as Convergent Epistemological
Realism. Convergent realism is a theory about the nature and history of science.
Laudan identifies five central claims for convergent epistemological realism.
R1) Scientific theories (at least in the mature sciences) are typically approximately true ... Show

The empirical success of science (in the sense of giving detailed explanations and accurate
predictions) accordingly provides striking empirical confirmation for realism.
According to Laudan, convergent epistemological realism involves two abductive arguments by
realists.
Argument 1: Inference to the best explanation from R1, R2, and R5.
P1: If scientific theories are approximately true, they will typically be empirically successful;
P2: If the central terms in scientific theories genuinely refer, those theories will generally be
empirically successful.
P3: Scientific theories are empirically successful.
C: (Probably) Theories are approximately true and their terms genuinely refer.
Argument 2: Inference to the best explanation from R3 and R5.
P1: If the earlier theories in a mature science are approximately true and if the central terms of
those theories genuinely refer, then later more successful theories in the same science will preserve
the earlier theories as limiting cases;
P2: Scientists seek to preserve earlier theories as limiting cases and generally succeed.
C: (Probably) Earlier theories in a mature science are approximately true and genuinely referential.
For his refutation of argument 1, Laudan (addressing Putnam) states that the realist seemingly
requires claims S1 S4.
S1) The theories in the advanced or mature sciences are successful;

Advantages Of Recycling Plastic
Science Fair Research Paper
Zachariah Alzubi and Yosef Ismael
Best Methods of Recycling Plastics
Recycling has grown rapidly over these past few decades. Almost every single household in
America has a recycling bin. You can find recycling bins anywhere like in your school or at a
dumpster nearby and I m sure there are plenty at home. You can almost recycle anything from glass,
to Styrofoam, and especially plastic. There are many things around your house that are probably
made of plastic, if you re just drinking a water bottle and you finish it toss it in the recycling bin
instead of wasting it in the garbage. You never know, you might end up using that same water
bottle again in the future. Recycling plastics doesn t only benefit the wellbeing of earth itself it
also benefits consumers so they can have a wide range of products made from plastic recycling like
the utensils you eat with or any kitchen gadgets or even your dinner table at home. Recycling
plastic began in 1972 in Conshohocken, Pa. They had the first mill to accept residential plastics
and began their operations there. Then in the 1980s many U.S citizens began curbside collection
programs in which they recycled plastics and other materials that could be recycled. In 1984 is
where recycling really started to expand they had topped over 100 million pounds in recycled
plastic for the first time in US history and from their they continued to expand and the number in
recycled plastic increased and is still increasing

NextGen is a tremendous, historic shift to revamp the U.S. air transportation system. This all
embracing initiative integrates new and existing policies, procedures, and technologies, including
satellite navigation and advanced digital communications. Two major parts of this upgrade and
modernization include, but not limited to, Standard Terminal Automation Replacement System
(STARS) and En Route Automation Modernization (ERAM). These systems enable NextGen
capabilities in all phases of flight and safety. STARS for instance, replaces multiple automation
systems for controllers who provide control services to pilots in terminal airspace and the airspace
immediately surrounding major airports. Additionally, ERAM combines flight plan information
with surveillance data from Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS B), Wide Area
Multi lateration, and radar to automate many air traffic control functions. Other parts of ERAM
include, System Wide Information Management (SWIM), which provides the digital data sharing
backbone of NextGen. SWIM also connects producers and users of data with a common language
and single point of contact to access aeronautical, flight, and weather information. ADS B sends out
broadcasts of an aircraft s position, altitude, and velocity to a network of ground stations that relays
the information to air traffic control displays and nearby aircraft that are equipped to receive the
data. Each component delivers specific capabilities to provide integration and smooth traffic flow to

Systems Theory In Social Work
One last theory which has impacted my clinical social work practice is systems theory which seeks
to understand how interrelated and interdependent parts work together to make up a whole system
(Langer, Lietz, Ebooks, 2015). For clients in court mandated treatment, multiple systems interact
together to inform and affect treatment outcomes. Probation, parole, the department of corrections,
the court system, the halfway house, the client s income status, housing arrangements, and family
systems are just a few of the systems which can be present for court mandated clients. With
intersecting mental health, substance use, and oftentimes trauma; all of these systems are
interdependent and intrinsically linked and thus it is important as a clinician to understand that the
client may be heavily affected by one system which can impact their overall treatment. Another
aspect of systems theoryapplies to mezzo level interactions between myself, my organization, and
other organizations which are interrelated with my organizations. My concentration internship is
for a non profit organization providing mental health and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The theories I have highlighted in this essay show the client centered aspects of my social work
practice. From a person centered perspective, I seek to remain client centered, creating a therapeutic
alliance where I have unconditional positive regard for my clients while providing a congruent
experience through accurate empathic understanding of my client s concerns. Remaining client
centered is further accentuated through attachment theory where I seek to understand how the
client s interactions with myself and others has been impacted by their relationship with their
parental figures. Similarly, using systems theory helps me to understand my client where they are,
in their life, by understanding how the systems exist and relate to one

Hyperkinesis
According to Conrad reading, medicalization is defining a behavior as
a medical problem or illness and mandating or licensing the medical profession to treat it
(McLeod Wright, 2013, p. 37). An example of a deviant behavior that has been
medicalized in our society is hyperkinesis also known as ADHD. Hyperkinesis is
known as Minimal Brain Dysfunction. The typical symptoms are: excess of motor
activities (hyperactivity) very short attention span, and restlessness behavior (McLeod
Wright, 2013, p. 38). During the 1970 s, many of the hyperkinesis symptoms were
deviant behaviors and boys had a higher prevalence than girls. Society did not view this

In my personal opinion, it

In the reading, Kleinman and Schulz both focuses on culture. From Kleinman s

psychological, social, and biological experiences rather than objective classification of
naturally occurring (McLeod Wright, 2013, p. 63). In the book, he gives an example of

as a physical problem and a physical cause. Cultural can influence our interpretations and

Military Deployment Has Affected The Family System
Throughout many years, military deployment has affected the family system. Especially young
children are effected by their parents shipping overseas since they are still are trying to figure out
how to cope without guidance during their development into adult years. In this particular study,
researchers examined adolescents between the ages of 12 18 to determine their thoughts about their
parents going into war. More specifically, researchers wanted to study the children s experiences
with ambiguous loss within their military families. Researchers hope to find ways in prevention
and intervention in order to reduce the feeling of uncertainty within adolescents. Sociologists
determined that the ambiguous loss theory provides explanation of the youth s responses from the
study. If children are uncertain of their parents job entitlement then it helps with grieving, but may
lead to depression and effecting future relationship with others. When parental deployment occurs,
familylife becomes a catastrophe since they are present for a short time. According to Boss, it is
hard to set and organize roles and responsibilities in a family setting when one or both supervisors
are frequently away. Another factor that was a part of the research was the Double ABC X
framework, created by McCubbin and Patterson. The letter A was commonly seen during the
sample where parental deployment and other stress factors, such as getting an A on a test, bothered
the adolescent. In other words,

Merriam Webster defines non sequiturs as an inference that does not follow from the basis premises
(Non sequitur, 2011). The cause and effect of facial expressions are unrelated. Cultures will differ in
nonverbal communication and actions but the facial expressions basically the same.
Gestures
Body gestures are physical types of nonverbal communication. Tapping of a pencil on a desk while
studying, a wave from someone to gain another s attention, or hand signals such as Sign Language
or police directing traffic.
Body Language and Posture How the sender present himself/herself sends nonverbal
communication to a receiver. Handshakes, eye contact, facial expressions, and posture send silent
messages to the other person. Posture is an indicator of approachability. The distinction in posture is
rectangular and triangular. The posture or position of two people will indicate private conversations
(rectangle) or an invitation to join in a conversation (triangle) (Bjorseth, 2007).
Proxemics
Space, proxemics, is the distance between two or more people. The distance between individuals
at a social gathering will be approximately 18 inches compared speaking to an audience, which is

An Epidemic in the Government was the The American...
Government is a branch or service of the supreme authority of a state or nation, taken as
representing the whole. The government was a system that was ordained by God in order to
maintain liberties that God has granted us and also punish those who disobey God commands. One
of the roles given to the government is to promote economic progress by protecting the rights of
individuals and allowing for the free marketeconomy of the laws of supply and demand to free
take place. One epidemic that has surfaced over the years would be the The American Taxpayer
Relief Act of 2012. The law allows for many of the Bush taxcuts to retain while those who have a
higher income are taxed at a higher rate. One of the major problems that this act of legislation
causes economically is an unequal taxation of different groups based on their income. Those who
make $400,000+ are taxed a rate of 39.6% of their total income. (H.R 8, 112th Congress) This does
not incorporate sales tax and property taxes that are also taken each year as well. In the book
Economicsin One Lesson by Henry Hazlitt, one topic that is discussed is how taxes discourages
production. In the case of The American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012, those who are of working
class category will not see a change in their tax rates. This is great since the monetary funds that
they do not pay in taxes they can either invest or use in the market. However, the taxes for those
who are of upper class status have the burden. As Hazlitt

Fertility Treatment Research Paper
Using Fertility Treatments as a Solution to Infertility Making big choices in life can be difficult,
especially if that big choice is having children. There are many men and women who are infertile
that still want to have children. Most decide to adopt other children who do not have families or
their families do not want them. But when adoption is not an option, there is now a way where
those men and women can have their own children together through fertilitytreatments. Fertility
treatments could be a good thing:being able to freeze egg and sperm, they can help infertile
couples, and avoiding transmitted diseases would be easier.
Egg Freezing The more popular and developing method of treatment is egg freezing. During this
procedure they take an embryo and freeze it for a month before they place it in a uterus to be later
fertilized (Maher). This method was first used for cancer patients. Cancer treatments, like
chemotherapy, can damage the ovaries and make it almost impossible for chemo patients to
reproduce. Doctors do this procedure by taking an ovary, from the patient before they start their
cancer treatments, and slicing it into strips before they freeze it (Though Experimental, Ovarian
Tissue Transplants Can Help Some Women Have Children)(see figure 1).

Difference Between Reasonable Suspicion And Reasonable Doubt
The issue within this paper focuses on the difference between reasonable suspicion and probable
doubt. The two appear similar in many ways as both require the best judgment of the law
enforcement personnel. But they are in fact different, and all law enforcement must know the
difference in order for the evidence to be admissible in court. Law enforcement is obligated to
follow the protocols and procedures outlined by the U.S. Supreme Court; if law enforcement does
not follow the laws, perpetrators could be released and free to commit more crimes. Proving
probable cause and reasonable suspicion are imperative to avoid violating the rights of citizens.
The police need only reasonable suspicion to stop an individual and question him or her, and they
may search for weapons if they believe that the person is armed or presents an imminent threat of
bodily harm (Taylor, 2012). Reasonable suspicion is when a law enforcement personnel presumes a
crime has been or is about to be committed. For instance, a police officer observes a vehicle
driving unusually faster than the others on the road, therefore performing a speed check using
radar. The car is, in fact, speeding so the officer pursues the vehicle and pulls them over. Upon
approaching the vehicle, the officer notices the suspect scrambling and whispering while leaning
around the car. This causes suspicion, reasonable suspicion, which allows the officer to ask the
person out of the vehicle to detain them. It also gives the

The City Of Lancaster s General Plan
Introduction: I have chosen the City of Lancaster s General Plan entitled, Soaring into the Future
. Entitled so to pay homage to the City s desire to grow and change, as well as a nod to its
economic support from Edwards Air Force Base. The City of Lancaster is a city in the Northern
Los Angeles County, in the western Mojave Desert. The Cityis separated from other communities
because it is located in the valley between the Tehachapi Mountains to the North and the San
Gabriel Mountains to the South. The area has a warm semi arid steppe climate which is less hot
but rainier than areas with a typical arid climate. This particular plan when into effect July 14,
2009 and is expected to last until the year 2030. Ultimately I will argue that due to the desire to
maintain the City of Lancaster as a rural escape for commuters and inability to provide jobs the
implementation of these programs can become contradictory.
History of the City: The first General Plan for the City of Lancaster was adopted in 1980. At that
time, the area in question occupied a space of approximately 37 square miles, with a population of
47, 882 people. Eight years later, the area had increased to 83 square miles, with a population of
approximately 100,000 residents. This significant increase in size and population prompted the
City Council to adopt a new General Plan in March of 1992. However, between 1988 and the
adoption of the new plan in 1992, the City incorporated an additional 12 square miles,

The Health Information Exchange And Hie
Introduction When it comes to healthcare there are a lot of things that have evolved. One in
particular is that of the patients health care records and how they are written as well as being
stored. In this paper I will be discussing the evolution of this process via the Health Information
Exchange or HIE. This will involve the history of the system, problems that are involved in this
evolution, as well as the security issues that will need to be addressed when moving from
different types of records. A lot of things have evolved when it comes to patient records in the
medical field. In medical facilities the patient records use to be in paper form. There would be
multiple pages of patient information, doctor notes, physical findings as well as diagnoses.
These were all kept in a filing cabinet where mostly anyone could obtain the files and have the
patient s information. If the patient was at a different facility these records would then have to be
mailed over which is not the most secure way to transfer a patients personal health records. It was
then evolved that records should now be made electronically. This is so that security and
transmission of a patients record can be more reliable. The Health Information Exchange (HIE)
started to evolve around 1990. This is when the Community Health Information System was also
created in order to get the electronic records started. The State HIE Cooperative Agreement
Program which was authorized by section 3013 of the Public

Persuasive Speech About Youth Suicide
Nicole: Man it would just warm my heart. I know too many people who have lost children. I
know too many people here in the Manitou Springs school district. There were two youth who
took their lives in one year. I mean it hits home across the nation of course across the globe. You
study suicide rates for a variety of other causes across the globe, but it s everywhere. El Paso County
has one of the highest rates of youthsuicide so yeah I mean I would feel like I was actually
providing true public and community service by just doing as much as I possibly could to support
families in order to prevent that and to just bring some awareness to that. Half of it is just
awareness and the ability to have the conversation around it
Andrew: I think that that s huge Nicole and I think that s something that should really be talked
about and needs to be talked about. I also think as we re looking over not just messaging, but also
fundraising networks, we ve certainly seen an increase in youth homelessness in Manitou and
neighboring Colorado Springs and I think as you stated there s been an increase youth suicide and
just coming from my experience as a gay man I think there s some connections there. There would
be a lot of people in the LGBTQ community interested in helping people who are = committed to
those sort of issues with first being that LGBTQ youth make up about forty percent of the homeless
population and thus are more prone to teen suicide so I mean looking for different demographic and
groups whether it be looking at the LGBTQ community or the Latino community or whatnot I think
you know it is not just good for outreach and messaging to those communities, but also potentially
fundraising bases as well.
Nicole: Absolutely. I m so glad you brought that up because Urban Peak is an organization we
have down here. It s an amazing organization that deals with youth homelessness and I know the
director and communicate with her regularly. In fact, I just saw her at an event. Citizens Project
is another one that I attend their annual breakfast every year. I ve got to know several of those
folks and they are very vocal and outspoken of the LGBTQ community so that s a great point we

Scottsboro Trial Research Paper
Today, in the United States, people are not punished for the color of their skin, back in the
1930s, a person s race was taken into consideration when in court. There are many instances of
racism in both trials, which impacted the outcome. The Scottsboro Trial consisted of two white
girls and a group of black youths. 21 year old Victoria Price and 17 year old Ruby Bates were on a
train ride back to their hometown, Huntsville, with a group of seven white boys. A group of 12
15 black youths were said to have joined the train and, later, a white boy, stepped on Haywood
Patterson, a black male s hand, and a brawl erupted which caused the white boys to be driven out.
After this, the white girls claimed that they were raped, each by six black males.... Show more

One reason why their testimonies were doubted was because of their sketchy backgrounds.
Because of their backgrounds, they were not respected by their community and, therefore, they
were not trusted. Before the Scottsboro trials, both Victoria and Ruby worked at the Margaret Mill
and they grew up lacking a father figure, something that brought shame to their families. Also,
Victoria was said to be a prostitute and Ruby lived among Negroes (Ransdall). In To Kill a
Mockingbird, Scout is deceived by Mayella s appearance, but then sees the true Mayella, ... she
seemed somehow fragile looking, but when she sat facing us in the witness chair she became
what she was, a thick bodied girl accustomed to strenuous labor (Lee 239). All three of the girls
skin color also affected the outcome of the trials, they were all privileged white ladies, for that
reason, the jury belived whatever they said. One of the black youths accused of rape, disclosed
his thoughts saying, I knew if a white woman accused a black man of rape, he was as good as
dead (Linder, Famous Trials ). This man knew he had little hope of winning the trial, like Atticus
in To Kill a Mockingbird. Attics knew that Mayella had the upper hand in this case because of her
skin color, about this he says, She is the victim of cruel poverty and ignorance, but I cannot pity
her: she is white.

Opium In The Gambler, The Nun, And The Radio
The word opium is utilized several times in this short story. An opium is an addictive, narcotic
drug that relieves pain or brings ecstasy. In a figurative sense, it is a way to avoid reality. For
some, alcohol allows for just that. For others, it could be music, sexual intercourse, gambling, and
many more. In The Gambler, the Nun, and the Radio, the thin Mexican says, Religion is the opium
of the poor (Hemingway 478). But, this statement is not necessarily true, which Mr. Frazer soon
realizes. Several opiums, or escapes from reality, exists, as this story shows.
Although religion is not the universal opium of the people, it helps many escape from reality.

Mr. Frazer plays his radio every night while he is at the hospital. Even though his escape from
reality is based around an object, it is still his opium. But Seattle he came to know very well...He
lived in Seattle from two o clock on, each night, hearing the pieces that all the different people
asked for, and it was as real as Minneapolis...Mr. Frazer grew very fond of Seattle, Washington
(480). Mr. Frazer s radio allows him to travel to different places without having to leave since he is
unable to. He learns to listen to his radio without thinking (480). Escape starts to become an
addictive thing, just like an opium drug, and it transforms into something that will soon obscure him
completely from the real world.
In certain parts of this story, opiums are compared with others, which suggests that one s opium
is not always another s. The Mexicans came and brought beer but it was not good beer (480). At
first, it seems that the beer tastes bad. but then Cayetano and Mr. Frazer have a brief discussion
about it, saying, Three of your countrymen were here. Sent by the police to see me. They brought
some beer. It was probably bad. It was bad (482).

`` Popular Mechanics `` By Raymond Carver

ENGWR 303 104
6 July 2015
Essay #2 In the short story, Popular Mechanics, by Raymond Carver, starts with a short rise in
action through the introduction of the characters, setting, and plot. The short story has a face paced
touch, which moves quickly towards the climax and released the resolution right after. The short
story was narrated in third person in order to reveal the actions and the dialogue between a man
and a woman which expressed separation, struggle, miscommunication, and conflict between the
couple. In the beginning of the short story there was already a sense of separation between the
couple through how the husband or boyfriend is described as packing up his clothes because he
plans on leaving the house. When the wife or girlfriend comes home, she realizes what is going
on and feels pleased that he is leaving, however she is a bit aroused. It is important to show the
physical distance between the couple because it expresses that they do not want to be together
anymore. Once the man is ready to leave, a physical fight breaks lose about whether who takes
custody of the baby. All throughout the short story, the narrator never states why the couple wants
to separate and gives little detail about the couple. This allows the readers to become active in what
they are reading by having the freedom to understand and develop their own opinions about what is
going on throughout the short story. Carver uses ambiguity in order to keep

Female Roles In The Oresteia By Aeschylus
Female Roles in The Oresteia That woman she manoeuvers like a man (Aeschylus 103). This
quote from the Greek tragedy, The Oresteia by Aeschylus, introduces readers to a theme of the
piece: the role of women. Furthermore, this tragedy gives the reader a view on how women
played a role in ancient Greek society. Additionally, it highlights the reaction, from Greek men, to
women in leadership roles. In the following, you will find a historical account of the role of
Greek women, and how Aeschylus shows a different role of women. Therefore, by reading The
Oresteia we can get a glimpse into what characteristics Greek women embodied. Also, through the

After reading this quote, one can see that even a murder by a woman is seen as having less weight.
Despite the cruelty of the murder, Clytemnestra killed her husband / king to get revenge for him
killing their daughter years prior. Essentially, King Agamemnon sacrificed his and Clytemnestra s
daughter for better luck in a war. Furthermore, he was never punished for this killing. Therefore,
seeing that the male led judicial system failed to uphold justice, Clytemnestra took it into her own
hands. Overall, this shows a woman recognizing that justice was being put to the wayside and
taking action to make it right. Now, Aeschylus did not explain if Clytemnestra tried to advocate
for her husband to be punished for her late daughters killing. But, he does make clear that she is
not happy with the way in which the counsel dealt with it. Not surprisingly, a woman in charge of a
kingdom would not be taken so lightly in ancient Greece. As a clear example of this, Clytemnestra s
taking of the reins while the king was at war, was met with a fair amount of backlash. Although not
publically scrutinized, Clytemnestra was seen as not fit for the position because of her gender. In
fact, this is very clear when news of the war ending reached Argos. When the watchman told the
queen about Troy being beaten, Clytemnestra took the news directly to the counsel. When she
relayed the message, she was met with skepticism. For example, a chorus

Theme Of A Clockwork Orange
t was a hot summer day in the year 2011. Everyone is walkin around with popsicles, ice cream,
and cold refreshments. Then, there is me, with a warm bottle of water and a bag of hot Cheetos
I dreadfully regretted buying. I thought, this must be how my story ends, but just as I had given
up hope, my younger brother walks by with a cold Sprite! The moment he leaves it, I dash over
faster than you could say the word pop, and snatched up the can. Just as I took my first couple
sips, i seemed to have been caught in a daze. Because after what seemed like the shortest 20
seconds ever before, i drop the can. Yes. Drop. The Sprite splashes all over the sidewalk and
makes a big crash. My little brother yells at me for spilling his soda, but i ignore him, staring in
astonishment at what was supposed to be my big break. You know what they say, What goes

World Beer Consumption

Written Assignment: The World Beer Industry
Beer Around the World Approximately, 100 billion liters of beer are consumed around the world
every year (Olfir, 2007). The worldwide growth rate of beer consumption has been recorded for
the past 19 years (Kirin Holdings, 2005). This, however, is not to say that the beer consumption
around the world is alike. The alcoholic beverage consumption levels around the world and the
rates at which these increase vary from one country to another. For example, in India the annual
consumption of beer is .5 litters per capita (Gupta, 2007), where as in Czech Republic, the
consumption of beer is 156.9 liters per capita per year ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although the industry could possibly help the economic stability of a country, I believe it does a
greater harm to the different nations. I believe that one possibly solution that would allow the beer
industry to prosper without causing much harm, is if as they enter a nation to introduce their
product, they help create programs that educate people on the consumption of alcohol. I believe that
if people are educated on the subject matter and know the consequences of drinking this product,
they will continue to consume the beverage but being more responsible. This, in my opinion, will
not have a negative affect on the beer industry. Another way that a nation can prevent the
consequences of alcohol consumption caused by worldwide brewers is by creating greater taxation
or other barriers that would hinder the production and selling of beer in their nation. This scenario,
however, might be one that the beer industry might one to avoid. Unlike my first suggestion, this
would have a greater negative impact on the industry. Such situation would lower sales in the given
country affecting the revenue of the company. I also believe that although the rate of alcohol
consumption in many developing countries is increasing, these rates will begin to slow down.
Although, as mentioned earlier, economy prosperity may help increase the levels of

Analysis Of The Book Outremer By Nabil Saleh
The thirteenth century showed a lot of tension between religious and political groups and leaders.
The church in those days had more power and control over the state. One religious tension in
particular was the hatred between Cathars and Catholics. While they both came from the Christian
religion, the Cathars had different beliefs and a different leading system than the Catholics, and the
Catholics saw the Cathars as heretics. The Cathars were overrunning the French land of
Languedoc, and so a series of wars started between the French Catholics and the Languedoc
Cathars. In the book, Outremer, by Nabil Saleh, we are introduced to many characters, religions,
and relationships. It gives us a look at how the different religions, political leaders, and families
connected with or lived beside one another. In my opinion, Outremer shows more religious tension
than political tension during the thirteenth century, but still it does not show the reality and full
effect of the tension. From the beginning of the book, we are shown the tension between Christians
and Cathars when Aimeric s father sends him on a mission to travel to Tyre and kill King Philip of
Montfort. There is hatred between the two religions from events that happened years ago, and the
Cathars still want revenge on the Christians. Although the main character, Aimeric, accepts his
father s mission, he ends up meeting people from different religions and getting along with them as
if they were of his own family.

Why Is The Battle Of Hastings Successful
The Battle of Hastings, 1066, saw Harold Godwinson, King of England, defeated by William,
Duke of Normandy. This historic battle was the result of Harold s predecessor, Edward the
Confessor, not leaving an heir to the English throne. This led to over 9 months of fighting between
the four claimants to the throne; Edgar the Atheling, Harald Hardrada, William, Duke of Normandy
and Harold Godwinson. At last, only two remained standing; Harold and William. This essay will
describe the events of the Battle of Hastingsand explain the dominating factors of William s
triumph: preparation readiness, good bad luck and leadership tactics.

The battle of Hastings took place on Senlac Hill, of which Harold was on. He chose this position
so the Normans would have to charge uphill to get to them. This meant that the Normans would
tire out quicker. Harold put his soldiers in a shield wall, making it harder for William s men to
get to them. William divided his men into three groups roughly corresponding to origin. The left
third was the Bretons, along with those from Anjou, Maine and Poitou. The right was made up by
Frenchmen, along with some men from Picardy, Boulogne, and Flanders, with the centre third
consisting of mainly Normans. William s plan was to use his many archers to weaken the
frontlines and then charge. However, when his plan failed and his arrows bounced harmlessly off
the Saxon shields, he ordered a charge. At his command, all three thirds charged towards the Saxon
wall and engaged in battle almost instantaneously. Many Normans were injured in this clash,
whereas most of the Saxons were well protected by their shield wall. At some point during the
battle, some of William s army, mainly the Bretons, ran away from the battle when they heard that

The Secret Anne Frank Research Paper
On her thirteenth birthday, Anne Frank s parents gave her a diary. She cherished it with all her
heart and treated it with much care. Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl Who would ever
think that so much went on in the soul of a young girl? (Frank 1/12/44) Anne was a young girl in
isolation, during World War II; Anne s family hid in The Secret Annex, a hidden living space in
the back of an office building. Anne was constantly in danger of being caught and killed by the
Nazis. During her time in the Annex Anne developed a deep personality, which knew she was
eventually going to die. Anne Franknamed her diary Kitty; she acted as if Kitty were a real person

Anne was living with seven other people but she still felt isolated and lonely, she felt like she
needed someone to talk to, she had Kitty, but that lead to many one sided conversations. Anne was
still young when she went into hiding, she had to grow up, and she went through puberty and went
through the normal teenage problems. In the Secret Annex everyone lived their normal lives, it was
as if there was no war outside, although they obviously noticed and wished it was over, Anne knew
this, but she wanted to be more, so she was immortalized through history, with her writing. Anne
Frank tried to explain her identity to Kitty in small parts; she describes her difficulties as a daughter
and sister, her life as a student, friend, and a writer. Anne has three family members, her father,
mother, and sister, but her family grows when she moves into the Secret Annex, Anne s family then
included the three Van Daans, Albert Dussel, Mr. Kraler, Mr. Koophuis, Miep, and Elli, Anne does
not consider them family, but without noticing she acknowledges them as family in her diary

Social Theories of Karl Marx and Maw Weber
There are many sociological issues in the world today that can relate back to the concept theories
that Karl Marx and Max Weber formed many years ago. Although there are too many for us to go
further in depth on, I chose to primarily focus on Racism and Classism. With the perspectives of
these theorists in mind I can explain how Racism, Classism, in conjunction with Feminism are
among the largest social problems human beings face in the world today.
Both theorists have different theories of the social concept Classism, however they are not that
much different from one another. Karl Marx utilizes the term proletariat to refer to the working
class . Marx views the members of each class as sharing their own distinctive culture. Max Weber...

This allows us to raise our brows to the problems with socialism, and where the government is
failing us. Marx used the concept of class consciousness to refer to a subjective awareness held by
members of a class regarding their common vested interests and need for collective political action
to bring about social change.
According to Marx, class is qualitatively different from gender and race and cannot be considered
just another system of oppression. Globally racism and sexism differs depending on the
situation, but in nature produces the same issues. Racism is a major social problem in more than
just one part of the world. There is not a connection between certain races and how they are
treated in similar countries, there is a drift among racially divided cultures. For example, 1/4
white men who use coke are caught for it while 1/17 black men who use it are caught. The number
of white to black users are the same, however the conviction rate is very different.
Feminism is another social problem troubling human societies all over the world. Feminism is an
issue of Dominance of Men over Women around the world. The feminist theory is a result of the
general movement to empower women worldwide. According to Weber feminism can be defined as

humor race and misunderstanding Essay examples
Humor, Race and Misunderstanding
Comedy is simply a funny way of being serious.
Peter Ustinov
In On Being Crazy , DuBois defines crazy as behavior based on illogical perceptions. Both the
narrator and wayfarer agree that the wayfarer walking in the mud and becoming muddy rather than
walk along side a dirty nigger who is clean is crazy. DuBois illustrates that society prefers to cut
off its nose to spite its face instead of fixing the nose. Twain builds much of the Adventures of
Huckleberry Finn in the same manner. His commentary regarding the social injustice is buried
within the story s humor. While it isn t readily available on the surface, if one is so inclined to look,
it can be easily found.

No one then, with exception of a few, understood the psychological impact the word had on the
recipient.
Twain s use of nigger illustrates that the nigger was not only a means of identification, but a
description of what one was. It stripped away the humanity and individualism of a person leaving
a shell, which was considered sub human. When a nigger wasn t a nigger, whites were astonished
but they didn t separate the nigger from the man. Huck, along with every other white person of the
time believed blacks couldn t be as intelligent as whites. ...Well, he was right; he was most always
right; he had an uncommon level head for a nigger quot; (Norton Anthology 266).
DuBois makes the same case in On Being Crazy . Niggers is dirty, he said. So is mud, said I.
Moreover I added, I am not as dirty as you at least not yet. But you re a nigger ain t you? he asked
(Dubois 2). Although the narrator isn t dirty or ignorant, the white wayfarer simply can t
comprehend that a black man could be anything other than a nigger. In fact, it is the white man who
using the standards of the day embodies the personification of a nigger.
Huck is truly a product of his time. Although he is our hero, he too is guilty of engaging in racial
misunderstanding, as evidenced when he tries to protect Jim. quot; When we was ready to shove
off we was a quarter of a mile below the island, and it was pretty broad day; so I made Jim lay

Three Principles Of The People During The Golden Age
The Three Principles of the People
If you could live by three principles of life what would they be? What If you did not get to

The Effects Of Long Distance Travel During The Era 1200
One of the most important effects of long distance travel in the era 1200 to 1500 was the famine
that started in 1315. The population lessened due to the lack of food and even when they did
have food it wasn t enough to stop their starvation. In the article Famine of 1315 it was stated:
Four pennies worth of coarse bread was not enough to feed a common man for one day. The
usual kinds of meat, suitable for eating, were too scarce; horse meat was precious; plump dogs
were stolen. And, according to many reports, men and women in many places secretly ate their
own children.... ( The famine of 1315) It showed how desperate people had become to stay alive.
The food wasn t enough for the people to survive due to the grains that weren t nourished during
the summer, so it caused the famine during the winter. People were stealing plump pets for meat
so that they could have something that would actually help their survival. Some people have
even ate their own children, instead of having another person to worry about feeding, they ate the
children so they can survive. At the time it seemed to be survival of the fittest if you are on the
vulnerable side most likely they wouldn t stay alive, such as the poor. Some of the poor had been
laying stiff in the streets because they weren t able to feed themselves and no one bothered to help
them because they had their own hunger to worry about. The poor was not even worst off, that
would have been anyone that stayed in the cities. The rich

This step was repeated iteratively, until the total distance traveled by the user reached its range set

Given the fact that the longest route defined in the simulation had a length of 7 km, additional costs
per kilometer were not incurred by users in the defined scenarios; single routes also did not justify
the utilization of hourly tariffs.

minimum rental period is one hour, although vehicles can be delivered earlier) in addition to a
variable cost per kilometer. The tariffs considered refer to the simplest vehicle available in the one
way service (a Fiat 500 1.2L, the same model offered by Enjoy), for the establishment of a more
equal base of comparison between the companies considering the user profiles modeled in the

Her most notorious song was actually not written by Reba, but was a cover of a Bobbie Gentry
song. She related with the song well because she believed she also went from rags to riches (

band that were killed in a plane crash in 1991 (Monaco). The theme song, I m a Survivor ,
belonged to McEntire s show Reba, and hit the charts at number three in 2001 (Branson 79). Her
music is more than catchy tunes, her songs tell stories. The singer released a song titled Is There

the late eighties, Reba helped benefit concerts for those in need. Before the concerts started, in
1980 Reba McEntire had family that was being treated in the Texoma Medical Center. Her time
their made her think. What if she made a place for families to stay while a loved one was in the
hospital? In 1992, she made the first Reba s Ranch House, a free place to stay while a family
member was seeking medical attention (Maynard). Located in Denison, Texas, the house has been

How Clinics Can Be Integrated Into The Curriculum
Below is a description of how clinics can be integrated into the curriculum in a manner consistent
with the principles enunciated above. A. LAW CENTER I Law Center I would not begin until the
second semester of the first year. In the first semester, as noted above, students would complete
practical skills instruction in doctrinal courses and the cross curricular hypothetical, which would
give students a foundation of experience that could be refined in the first clinical course. For
example, in the first semester, students would perform an initial client interview, conduct book
and electronic research, and draft a predictive memorandum, client letter, and complaint. At the
beginning of the second semester of the first year, a select group of high performing students
would be chosen to participate in Law Center I, and assignments would be consistent with the
assignments completed in the first semester. Thus, in Law Center I, students would interview and
screen potential clients, and perform research. In doing so, Law Center I provides students with
the opportunity to transfer skills learned in the prior semester to a new legal context and on
behalf of a real client. This approach would be followed in each subsequent semester, with
students building upon the skills acquired in doctrinal and skills courses, and faculty gradually
increasing the complexity of work and level of responsibility. B. LAW CENTER II Law Center II,
which would

Volunteering At Mattel Children s Hospital
Service to the community has been important to my family for as long I can remember. My
earliest recollections of community service were at 10 years of age when I would join my father
in cleaning up the town pond, and my mother in feeding the homeless. With this early introduction
to service, I find being a person for others natural, and have always found ways in which I can give
back. Volunteering at Mattel Children s Hospital was my first clinical experience, and the
meaningful impact I made there will always stay close to my heart. Many of the children I spent
time with were extremely sick, and it opened my eyes to the suffering accompanied with ill health.
Even though I had never been in their situation, I could understand their frustration,

Morality Is The Product Of God s Morality
Samuel Pufendorf argues that morality is the product of God s will primarily, and human will
secondly, and is directed at the peaceful organization of humanity. Moral entitities are
metaphysically superadded to physical entitites, so they are dependent on intelligent beings. Moral
obligation, then, is grounded in the command of a superior (human or divine), and commands are
morally compelling due to the dual factors of fear and respect for the just reasons behind them.
Gottfried Leibniz, in contrast, grounds moralityin God s intellect. He offers two major objections to
Pufendorf: first, that he threatens the goodness of God by failing to make justice an attribute he
possesses, and, second, that his argument that justice consists in obeying a superior s command is
circular since a superior has authority in virtue of their just cause. This paper will first detail
Pufendorf s position on moral entitities, the nature of obligation, and moral necessity. Leibniz s
criticisms will then be expounded, and it will be argued that Pufendorf holds intellectualist
commitments complicating the voluntarist aspects of his philosophy. Pufendorf defines moral
entities as those which are imposed onto physical beings to direct and temper the freedom of the
voluntary acts of man, and contribute to the structuring of the universeand betterment of humanity.
Moral entities are dependent, existing only in the physical substances they are superadded to by
beings with intellects.

Holmes And Watson Research Paper
There are a string of dynamic duos that fight crime throughout history, from Batman and Robin
to Starsky and Hutch, and somewhere along the list is the pairing of Sherlock Holmes and
Watson and there is no doubt that this pairing is an interesting one. They seem like such
opposites but that is a big factor in why they work so well together. It works because it embodies
the old time saying: opposites attract . Sherlock is this detective genius that does not feel things or
really understand the people around him so he has Watson to fall back on. In a way they teach
each other. Holmes helps Watson become a better detective while Watson teaches Holmes how to
interact with the outside world. It is said that this pairing was one of Doyle s greatest... Show more

It would only take a few pages for the brilliant Sherlock Holmes to solve the mystery and tell his
readers his decision. Also with the way he speaks and his mannerisms most people might not
even be able to translate Holmes s language into something the everyday populous can
understand. This means that the risk of the stories fading out and never being remembered is a
very real possibility. On the other side of the coin, if everything was only seen and told from
Watson s point of view there would not be a very mysterious element about it. For example,
when he is staying with Sir Henry at the moor the story seems to drag because he only notices
the obvious things that seem to be odd. If this was all the story had to offer the audience might
dislike Watson just as much as they would a solo Holmes. Some things that work well together do
not work very well apart. This pairing is definitely one of those

RE: Convergence of GAAP and Solvency Standards in the US, Canada and Europe
Executive Summary
There have been a number of proposed and upcoming changes to GAAP and solvency reporting
standards in the US, Canada and Europe in recent years. In particular, significant efforts have been
made to increase convergence between US GAAP and IFRS. The following report discusses the
pros and cons of convergence between standards in different jurisdictions, as well as convergence
between GAAP and solvency standards, in relation to insurance contracts. Here, the term GAAP
refers to financial reporting for investors, shareholders and creditors. Solvency standards refer to the
regulatory requirements imposed on insurers. The jurisdictions discussed have been limited to
those in which The Greatest Life Insurance Company operates in: namely, the US, Canada and
Europe.
The Greatest Life Insurance Company should support the convergence of GAAP standards as well
as the convergence of solvency standards in different jurisdictions. However, the Greatest Life
Insurance Company should not support the convergence of GAAP and solvency standards:
Distinct benefits exist in convergence of GAAP in different jurisdictions. Comparability between
companies that operate in, or are listed in, different countries, will be significantly improved.

  • 2. Essay On The Dark Sword The dim moonlight shone through the windows, giving life to the dancing shadows on the cold stone floors. A small, lithe figure clad in head to toe black, and armed to the teeth strode upon them. The only sound she made was the faint scuffle of her boots on the frigid flagstone floor. She moved with a purpose, striding down the halls in the shadows, watching for any approaching figures that might alert the sleeping castle to her presence. She slowly rounded the corner, still shrouded in the shadows, ever vigilant for possible guards or servants passing through the drafty castle halls. Once the assassin was in the room, she barricaded the door with a heavy wooden chest of drawers and several chairs. At the sight of the woman lying on the bed, her fiery hair flowing all over the pillow, her hand went to the dark jade stone at her throat. Done with her moment of remembrance, her scarred hand jerked out and seized the queen s pale, unmarred throat, pulling her from her slumber, and the assassin dragged her towards the balcony, while the queen thrashed and clawed at the hands holding her throat in an iron grip. The assailant released her prey by throwing her to the ground, the queen rolling for several feet before hitting the stone railing on the balcony, instantly soaked by the pouring rain. As she stepped into the howling wind and beating rain, lightning flashed and the queen saw her face, the face of someone who should have been long dead. Advantages Of Audio Aided Reading Method Audio Aided Reading Method as Instructional ScaffoldAudio aided reading method has been used as an effective instructional intervention for students with learning disabilities and with struggling readers. According to Evans (2010) instructional scaffolding is an instructional method that has been proven to be successful with students with learning disabilities and poor performing readers. Evans (2010) provided an overview of Audio Assisted Readingin which a student who has difficulty reading print listens to an audio book, while following along in regular print, large print, video magnified print, or Braille. This technique often helps to increase comprehension for those who struggle to decode. It also helps to reinforce the relationship between symbols and sounds, whether in print or Braille. Evans notes that this method allows the reader to use all multiple sensory inputs simultaneously to acquire and process information. It has some distinct advantages over using either print, Braille, or recorded books alone. Evans further explain, it has some distinct advantages such as: 1) Simultaneous use helps those with attention problems screen out competing stimuli. Some people who use recordings alone, such as audio books, are distracted by visual stimuli in the environment. Similarly, some who use print or Braille alone are distracted by extraneous sound. Use of headphones can boost attention; 2) If print or Braille decoding is slow and labored, it consumes all the energy needed for comprehension. By the time one gets to the ... The film was directed by Steven Spielberg whose other works include Indiana Jones and E.T. Jaws is a fascinating and entertaining film mainly because of its interesting and diverse plot. The people of Amity Island used to live a peaceful and quiet life in the small summer resort town in America. Now however, the people of the small town have become victim to a man eating Great White Shark. For instance, whenever an attack occurs, the music ends up being extremely fast, then slowing considerably and then stopping altogether resulting in complete silence. This silence after each attack frightens the audience because they realise how quickly something awful, like the event they have just witnessed, can happen and how quickly it can end. It also reminds them that the shark is still out there and will continue to carry out these attacks. In addition, before the first attack occurs a group of teenagers are having a bonfire and at this point someone is playing a mouth organ. When the boy and the girl run off, we suddenly hear the sound of the mouth organ gently disappearing. This shows that the two are travelling away from safety and peace into the abyss of the dark sea where they are unaware of what is lurking there. It also signifies how alone and desolate they are. The second attack occurs on a crowded beach, a venue where everyone feels safe. Contrary to popular belief this is not true though, as recent studies have shown that Great White Sharks are often found in just three feet of water. • 8. Analyzing the Juvenile Justice System The juvenile justice system is imperfect, at best, and part of this stems from the fact that juvenile justice, as a specific, discrete category of crime and punishment is still a relatively recent phenomenon. In fact, the notion of childhood and adolescence as distinct phases of human development is a novel idea that did not truly emerge until the twentieth century, so it is only natural that some elements of the juvenile justice system seem to have been made up they went along. Now, however, after substantial research into juvenile delinquency, it causes, and potential solutions, a much clearer picture of the phenomenon is emerging that will allow parents, teachers, legislators, and law enforcement officials to better reduce juvenile delinquency without imposing unnecessarily harsh restrictions of juveniles. By examining the history of the juvenile justice system alongside more recent research into juvenile delinquency, it will be possible to see how the most effective treatments going forward will likely focus on reducing risk before delinquency occurs and rehabilitating juveniles already in the justice system, as opposed to more punitive measures that mark juveniles as a criminal and thus hinder them for the rest of their lives. It is necessary to begin this study with a look at the history of the juvenile justice system, because as mentioned above, the notion of childhoodand adolescence as a distinct phase of human development, and thus deserving of special ... This requires that there be a reasonable inference from a scientific theory s success to its approximate truth. The argument that realists are trying to make is that the best explanation of a scientific theorys success is that it is true. Larry Laudan refutes the realists argument from the success of science. To do this, he characterize his opposition as Convergent Epistemological Realism. Convergent realism is a theory about the nature and history of science. Systems Theory In Social Work One last theory which has impacted my clinical social work practice is systems theory which seeks to understand how interrelated and interdependent parts work together to make up a whole system (Langer, Lietz, Ebooks, 2015). In this particular study, researchers examined adolescents between the ages of 12 18 to determine their thoughts about their parents going into war. More specifically, researchers wanted to study the children s experiences with ambiguous loss within their military families. Researchers hope to find ways in prevention and intervention in order to reduce the feeling of uncertainty within adolescents. Sociologists determined that the ambiguous loss theory provides explanation of the youth s responses from the study. The government was a system that was ordained by God in order to maintain liberties that God has granted us and also punish those who disobey God commands. One of the roles given to the government is to promote economic progress by protecting the rights of individuals and allowing for the free marketeconomy of the laws of supply and demand to free take place. One epidemic that has surfaced over the years would be the The American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012. The law allows for many of the Bush taxcuts to retain while those who have a higher income are taxed at a higher rate. One of the major problems that this act of legislation causes economically is an unequal taxation of different groups based on their income. Those who make $400,000+ are taxed a rate of 39.6% of their total income. (H.R 8, 112th Congress) This does not incorporate sales tax and property taxes that are also taken each year as well. In the book Economicsin One Lesson by Henry Hazlitt, one topic that is discussed is how taxes discourages production. In the case of The American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012, those who are of working class category will not see a change in their tax rates. This is great since the monetary funds that they do not pay in taxes they can either invest or use in the market. However, the taxes for those who are of upper class status have the burden. • 25. Fertility Treatment Research Paper Using Fertility Treatments as a Solution to Infertility Making big choices in life can be difficult, especially if that big choice is having children. There are many men and women who are infertile that still want to have children. Most decide to adopt other children who do not have families or their families do not want them. But when adoption is not an option, there is now a way where those men and women can have their own children together through fertilitytreatments. Fertility treatments could be a good thing:being able to freeze egg and sperm, they can help infertile couples, and avoiding transmitted diseases would be easier. Egg Freezing The more popular and developing method of treatment is egg freezing. During this procedure they take an embryo and freeze it for a month before they place it in a uterus to be later fertilized (Maher). This method was first used for cancer patients. Cancer treatments, like chemotherapy, can damage the ovaries and make it almost impossible for chemo patients to reproduce. Doctors do this procedure by taking an ovary, from the patient before they start their cancer treatments, and slicing it into strips before they freeze it (Though Experimental, Ovarian Tissue Transplants Can Help Some Women Have Children)(see figure 1). • 26. Difference Between Reasonable Suspicion And Reasonable Doubt The issue within this paper focuses on the difference between reasonable suspicion and probable doubt. The two appear similar in many ways as both require the best judgment of the law enforcement personnel. But they are in fact different, and all law enforcement must know the difference in order for the evidence to be admissible in court. Law enforcement is obligated to follow the protocols and procedures outlined by the U.S. Supreme Court; if law enforcement does not follow the laws, perpetrators could be released and free to commit more crimes. Proving probable cause and reasonable suspicion are imperative to avoid violating the rights of citizens. The police need only reasonable suspicion to stop an individual and question him or her, and they may search for weapons if they believe that the person is armed or presents an imminent threat of bodily harm (Taylor, 2012). Reasonable suspicion is when a law enforcement personnel presumes a crime has been or is about to be committed. For instance, a police officer observes a vehicle driving unusually faster than the others on the road, therefore performing a speed check using radar. The car is, in fact, speeding so the officer pursues the vehicle and pulls them over. Upon approaching the vehicle, the officer notices the suspect scrambling and whispering while leaning around the car. This causes suspicion, reasonable suspicion, which allows the officer to ask the person out of the vehicle to detain them. It also gives the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 27. The City Of Lancaster s General Plan Introduction: I have chosen the City of Lancaster s General Plan entitled, Soaring into the Future . Entitled so to pay homage to the City s desire to grow and change, as well as a nod to its economic support from Edwards Air Force Base. The City of Lancaster is a city in the Northern Los Angeles County, in the western Mojave Desert. The Cityis separated from other communities because it is located in the valley between the Tehachapi Mountains to the North and the San Gabriel Mountains to the South. The area has a warm semi arid steppe climate which is less hot but rainier than areas with a typical arid climate. This particular plan when into effect July 14, 2009 and is expected to last until the year 2030. Ultimately I will argue that due to the desire to maintain the City of Lancaster as a rural escape for commuters and inability to provide jobs the implementation of these programs can become contradictory. History of the City: The first General Plan for the City of Lancaster was adopted in 1980. At that time, the area in question occupied a space of approximately 37 square miles, with a population of 47, 882 people. Eight years later, the area had increased to 83 square miles, with a population of approximately 100,000 residents. This significant increase in size and population prompted the City Council to adopt a new General Plan in March of 1992. However, between 1988 and the adoption of the new plan in 1992, the City incorporated an additional 12 square miles, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. The Health Information Exchange And Hie Introduction When it comes to healthcare there are a lot of things that have evolved. One in particular is that of the patients health care records and how they are written as well as being stored. In this paper I will be discussing the evolution of this process via the Health Information Exchange or HIE. This will involve the history of the system, problems that are involved in this evolution, as well as the security issues that will need to be addressed when moving from different types of records. A lot of things have evolved when it comes to patient records in the medical field. In medical facilities the patient records use to be in paper form. There would be multiple pages of patient information, doctor notes, physical findings as well as diagnoses. These were all kept in a filing cabinet where mostly anyone could obtain the files and have the patient s information. If the patient was at a different facility these records would then have to be mailed over which is not the most secure way to transfer a patients personal health records. It was then evolved that records should now be made electronically. This is so that security and transmission of a patients record can be more reliable. The Health Information Exchange (HIE) started to evolve around 1990. This is when the Community Health Information System was also created in order to get the electronic records started. You study suicide rates for a variety of other causes across the globe, but it s everywhere. El Paso County has one of the highest rates of youthsuicide so yeah I mean I would feel like I was actually providing true public and community service by just doing as much as I possibly could to support families in order to prevent that and to just bring some awareness to that. Half of it is just awareness and the ability to have the conversation around it Andrew: I think that that s huge Nicole and I think that s something that should really be talked about and needs to be talked about. I also think as we re looking over not just messaging, but also fundraising networks, we ve certainly seen an increase in youth homelessness in Manitou and neighboring Colorado Springs and I think as you stated there s been an increase youth suicide and just coming from my experience as a gay man I think there s some connections there. There would be a lot of people in the LGBTQ community interested in helping people who are = committed to those sort of issues with first being that LGBTQ youth make up about forty percent of the homeless population and thus are more prone to teen suicide so I mean looking for different demographic and groups whether it be looking at the LGBTQ community or the Latino community or whatnot I think you know it is not just good for outreach and messaging to those communities, but also potentially fundraising bases as well. Nicole: Absolutely. I m so glad you brought that up because Urban Peak is an organization we have down here. It s an amazing organization that deals with youth homelessness and I know the director and communicate with her regularly. In fact, I just saw her at an event. There are many instances of racism in both trials, which impacted the outcome. The Scottsboro Trial consisted of two white girls and a group of black youths. 21 year old Victoria Price and 17 year old Ruby Bates were on a train ride back to their hometown, Huntsville, with a group of seven white boys. A group of 12 15 black youths were said to have joined the train and, later, a white boy, stepped on Haywood Patterson, a black male s hand, and a brawl erupted which caused the white boys to be driven out. The short story has a face paced touch, which moves quickly towards the climax and released the resolution right after. The short story was narrated in third person in order to reveal the actions and the dialogue between a man and a woman which expressed separation, struggle, miscommunication, and conflict between the couple. In the beginning of the short story there was already a sense of separation between the couple through how the husband or boyfriend is described as packing up his clothes because he plans on leaving the house. When the wife or girlfriend comes home, she realizes what is going on and feels pleased that he is leaving, however she is a bit aroused. It is important to show the physical distance between the couple because it expresses that they do not want to be together anymore. Once the man is ready to leave, a physical fight breaks lose about whether who takes custody of the baby. All throughout the short story, the narrator never states why the couple wants to separate and gives little detail about the couple. This allows the readers to become active in what they are reading by having the freedom to understand and develop their own opinions about what is going on throughout the short story. Furthermore, this tragedy gives the reader a view on how women played a role in ancient Greek society. Additionally, it highlights the reaction, from Greek men, to women in leadership roles. In the following, you will find a historical account of the role of Greek women, and how Aeschylus shows a different role of women. After reading this quote, one can see that even a murder by a woman is seen as having less weight. Despite the cruelty of the murder, Clytemnestra killed her husband / king to get revenge for him killing their daughter years prior. Essentially, King Agamemnon sacrificed his and Clytemnestra s daughter for better luck in a war. Furthermore, he was never punished for this killing. Therefore, seeing that the male led judicial system failed to uphold justice, Clytemnestra took it into her own hands. Overall, this shows a woman recognizing that justice was being put to the wayside and taking action to make it right. Now, Aeschylus did not explain if Clytemnestra tried to advocate for her husband to be punished for her late daughters killing. But, he does make clear that she is not happy with the way in which the counsel dealt with it. Not surprisingly, a woman in charge of a kingdom would not be taken so lightly in ancient Greece. As a clear example of this, Clytemnestra s taking of the reins while the king was at war, was met with a fair amount of backlash. Although not publically scrutinized, Clytemnestra was seen as not fit for the position because of her gender. In fact, this is very clear when news of the war ending reached Argos. When the watchman told the queen about Troy being beaten, Clytemnestra took the news directly to the counsel. When she relayed the message, she was met with skepticism. For example, a chorus ... The worldwide growth rate of beer consumption has been recorded for the past 19 years (Kirin Holdings, 2005). This, however, is not to say that the beer consumption around the world is alike. The alcoholic beverage consumption levels around the world and the rates at which these increase vary from one country to another. I believe that if people are educated on the subject matter and know the consequences of drinking this product, they will continue to consume the beverage but being more responsible. This, in my opinion, will not have a negative affect on the beer industry. Another way that a nation can prevent the consequences of alcohol consumption caused by worldwide brewers is by creating greater taxation or other barriers that would hinder the production and selling of beer in their nation. • 41. Analysis Of The Book Outremer By Nabil Saleh The thirteenth century showed a lot of tension between religious and political groups and leaders. The church in those days had more power and control over the state. One religious tension in particular was the hatred between Cathars and Catholics. While they both came from the Christian religion, the Cathars had different beliefs and a different leading system than the Catholics, and the Catholics saw the Cathars as heretics. The Cathars were overrunning the French land of Languedoc, and so a series of wars started between the French Catholics and the Languedoc Cathars. In the book, Outremer, by Nabil Saleh, we are introduced to many characters, religions, and relationships. It gives us a look at how the different religions, political leaders, and families connected with or lived beside one another. In my opinion, Outremer shows more religious tension than political tension during the thirteenth century, but still it does not show the reality and full effect of the tension. From the beginning of the book, we are shown the tension between Christians and Cathars when Aimeric s father sends him on a mission to travel to Tyre and kill King Philip of Montfort. There is hatred between the two religions from events that happened years ago, and the Cathars still want revenge on the Christians. Although the main character, Aimeric, accepts his father s mission, he ends up meeting people from different religions and getting along with them as if they were of his own family. ... • 45. Social Theories of Karl Marx and Maw Weber There are many sociological issues in the world today that can relate back to the concept theories that Karl Marx and Max Weber formed many years ago. Although there are too many for us to go further in depth on, I chose to primarily focus on Racism and Classism. With the perspectives of these theorists in mind I can explain how Racism, Classism, in conjunction with Feminism are among the largest social problems human beings face in the world today. Both theorists have different theories of the social concept Classism, however they are not that much different from one another. Karl Marx utilizes the term proletariat to refer to the working class . Marx views the members of each class as sharing their own distinctive culture. Max Weber... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This allows us to raise our brows to the problems with socialism, and where the government is failing us. Marx used the concept of class consciousness to refer to a subjective awareness held by members of a class regarding their common vested interests and need for collective political action to bring about social change. According to Marx, class is qualitatively different from gender and race and cannot be considered just another system of oppression. Globally racism and sexism differs depending on the situation, but in nature produces the same issues. Racism is a major social problem in more than just one part of the world. There is not a connection between certain races and how they are treated in similar countries, there is a drift among racially divided cultures. For example, 1/4 white men who use coke are caught for it while 1/17 black men who use it are caught. The number of white to black users are the same, however the conviction rate is very different. Feminism is another social problem troubling human societies all over the world. Feminism is an issue of Dominance of Men over Women around the world. The feminist theory is a result of the general movement to empower women worldwide. According to Weber feminism can be defined as a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. humor race and misunderstanding Essay examples Humor, Race and Misunderstanding Comedy is simply a funny way of being serious. Peter Ustinov In On Being Crazy , DuBois defines crazy as behavior based on illogical perceptions. Both the narrator and wayfarer agree that the wayfarer walking in the mud and becoming muddy rather than walk along side a dirty nigger who is clean is crazy. DuBois illustrates that society prefers to cut off its nose to spite its face instead of fixing the nose. Twain builds much of the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn in the same manner. His commentary regarding the social injustice is buried within the story s humor. While it isn t readily available on the surface, if one is so inclined to look, it can be easily found. In ... Twain s use of nigger illustrates that the nigger was not only a means of identification, but a description of what one was. It stripped away the humanity and individualism of a person leaving a shell, which was considered sub human. When a nigger wasn t a nigger, whites were astonished but they didn t separate the nigger from the man. Huck, along with every other white person of the time believed blacks couldn t be as intelligent as whites. ...Well, he was right; he was most always right; he had an uncommon level head for a nigger quot; (Norton Anthology 266). DuBois makes the same case in On Being Crazy . Niggers is dirty, he said. So is mud, said I. Moreover I added, I am not as dirty as you at least not yet. But you re a nigger ain t you? he asked (Dubois 2). Although the narrator isn t dirty or ignorant, the white wayfarer simply can t comprehend that a black man could be anything other than a nigger. In fact, it is the white man who using the standards of the day embodies the personification of a nigger. Huck is truly a product of his time. The population lessened due to the lack of food and even when they did have food it wasn t enough to stop their starvation. In the article Famine of 1315 it was stated: Four pennies worth of coarse bread was not enough to feed a common man for one day. The usual kinds of meat, suitable for eating, were too scarce; horse meat was precious; plump dogs were stolen. And, according to many reports, men and women in many places secretly ate their own children.... ( The famine of 1315) It showed how desperate people had become to stay alive. The food wasn t enough for the people to survive due to the grains that weren t nourished during the summer, so it caused the famine during the winter. People were stealing plump pets for meat so that they could have something that would actually help their survival. Some people have even ate their own children, instead of having another person to worry about feeding, they ate the children so they can survive. At the time it seemed to be survival of the fittest if you are on the vulnerable side most likely they wouldn t stay alive, such as the poor. Some of the poor had been laying stiff in the streets because they weren t able to feed themselves and no one bothered to help them because they had their own hunger to worry about. • 52. How Clinics Can Be Integrated Into The Curriculum Below is a description of how clinics can be integrated into the curriculum in a manner consistent with the principles enunciated above. A. LAW CENTER I Law Center I would not begin until the second semester of the first year. In the first semester, as noted above, students would complete practical skills instruction in doctrinal courses and the cross curricular hypothetical, which would give students a foundation of experience that could be refined in the first clinical course. For example, in the first semester, students would perform an initial client interview, conduct book and electronic research, and draft a predictive memorandum, client letter, and complaint. At the beginning of the second semester of the first year, a select group of high performing students would be chosen to participate in Law Center I, and assignments would be consistent with the assignments completed in the first semester. Thus, in Law Center I, students would interview and screen potential clients, and perform research. In doing so, Law Center I provides students with the opportunity to transfer skills learned in the prior semester to a new legal context and on behalf of a real client. This approach would be followed in each subsequent semester, with students building upon the skills acquired in doctrinal and skills courses, and faculty gradually increasing the complexity of work and level of responsibility. • 54. Morality Is The Product Of God s Morality Samuel Pufendorf argues that morality is the product of God s will primarily, and human will secondly, and is directed at the peaceful organization of humanity. Moral entitities are metaphysically superadded to physical entitites, so they are dependent on intelligent beings. Moral obligation, then, is grounded in the command of a superior (human or divine), and commands are morally compelling due to the dual factors of fear and respect for the just reasons behind them. Gottfried Leibniz, in contrast, grounds moralityin God s intellect. He offers two major objections to Pufendorf: first, that he threatens the goodness of God by failing to make justice an attribute he possesses, and, second, that his argument that justice consists in obeying a superior s command is circular since a superior has authority in virtue of their just cause. This paper will first detail Pufendorf s position on moral entitities, the nature of obligation, and moral necessity. Leibniz s criticisms will then be expounded, and it will be argued that Pufendorf holds intellectualist commitments complicating the voluntarist aspects of his philosophy. Pufendorf defines moral entities as those which are imposed onto physical beings to direct and temper the freedom of the voluntary acts of man, and contribute to the structuring of the universeand betterment of humanity. Moral entities are dependent, existing only in the physical substances they are superadded to by beings with intellects. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Holmes And Watson Research Paper There are a string of dynamic duos that fight crime throughout history, from Batman and Robin to Starsky and Hutch, and somewhere along the list is the pairing of Sherlock Holmes and Watson and there is no doubt that this pairing is an interesting one. They seem like such opposites but that is a big factor in why they work so well together. It works because it embodies the old time saying: opposites attract . Sherlock is this detective genius that does not feel things or really understand the people around him so he has Watson to fall back on. In a way they teach each other. Holmes helps Watson become a better detective while Watson teaches Holmes how to interact with the outside world. It is said that this pairing was one of Doyle s greatest... This means that the risk of the stories fading out and never being remembered is a very real possibility. On the other side of the coin, if everything was only seen and told from Watson s point of view there would not be a very mysterious element about it. For example, when he is staying with Sir Henry at the moor the story seems to drag because he only notices the obvious things that seem to be odd.
