The Academic Performance At Central Falls High School
Central Falls, Rhode Island, is located just outside of the Providence, the capital of Rhode Island. The
diversity of the Central Falls community is echoed by looking at the high schools 800 member student
body. Within the number of students the birthplaces represented are Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic,
Columbia, Guatemala, Cape Verde and United States. The school bodies aggregate ethnic breakdown
is calculated as 72 percent Hispanic, 15 percent Black, and 13 percent White (Donnelly Rochefort,
2011). The school system is the pushing force behind achieving the hopes and dreams of the students.
Educational Statistics
The academic performance at Central Falls High School (CFHS) has historically trailed behind the
average school performance numbers for the state of Rhode Island. According to the article, 271
freshmen entered Central Falls High School in 2005, but only 47 percent reached graduation four
years later. Other data revealed that other 33.5 percent of the students dropped out, 12.5 percent were
held back, and 7 percent received a General Equivalency Diploma. Data also revealed that only 55
percent of the student body was considered to be proficient in reading and only 7 percent proficient in
math. These statistics showed little improvement by 2008, where the math proficiency rose another 3
percent (Donnelly Rochefort, 2011).
Identify the stakeholders
The article states that Central Falls High School parents eagerly want something better for their

Ambiguity Of Civil Liberties Essay
Civil liberties have a formative and long history within the UK, the development of which is
considered to have begun with the Magna Carta in 1215. This document is often described as the
blueprint and original template for the numerous Bill of Rights and constitutions which exist today.
Unlike other countries, such as the USA, the UK does not have a written constitution setting out its
citizens civil liberties. Common law may account for many of the UK s long recognised civil liberties
however it is the documents which exemplify liberties which are still enforced today, such as habeas
corpus: anyone who has been arrested or otherwise deprived of their liberty, may apply for a judge to
oversee the legality of this decision. With the UK currently a party to the European Convention of
Human Rights (ECHR) and the Human Rights Act 1998 (HRA 1998), it is becoming ever more
important to understand what defines a civil liberties and whether civil liberties and human rights can
be viewed as interchangeable concepts. This essay aims to examine: the origins and apparent
ambiguity of civil liberties and human rights; the two different approaches offered by the author of
Textbook on Civil Liberties and Human Rights, Richard Stone; and Ewing and Gearty s slant, as noted
in The Struggle for Civil Liberties; whether civil liberties are distinct from human rights will also be
explored, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Gearty argues that civil liberties are the rights which are not to be interfered with, rather than the right
to do something. They have divided civil liberties into two categories: primary and secondary. Primary
liberties are those necessary for direct participation in the political process, such as the right to vote;
whereas secondary liberties are those which allow influence on politics. The view here is that civil
liberties are mostly protected by common law, whilst human rights are safeguarded by

Social Work Field Report
It is obvious that writing plays a crucial role in a field such as social work. Many first year social work
majors often wonder why such emphasis is placed on writing so early in their studies. Social Work
majors must learn to write clearly, effectively, and appropriately because it will help them later on in
their careers.
Introduction and Objectives
As a first year social work major, I was interested to know the impact writing has on other graduate
students and professionals in my discourse community. Before I began my research, I knew that I
would be required to type papers related to practices in social work and field reflections, but I wanted
to know more about the professional writing I would need to be able to do further into my career. The
goal of this report is to show the importance of writing early in a social worker s career and to show
how writing effectively is crucial in the field of social work.
Method
To accomplish the goals of the report, I set out to interview other students and professionals in my
discourse community. I interviewed a graduate student, a current social worker, and a professor.
Anna Batts is currently in her second and final year of the Masters of Social Work program at East
Carolina University. Prior to studying at East Carolina, Ms. Batts ... Show more content on

I asked everyone that I interviewed if they have someone proofread their case notes and research
papers and not a single person said they didn t have a proofreader. Dr. Miller explained to me that
proofreading is crucial in our discourse community because anyone can make a mistake, but you want
to catch that mistake before publishing it for everyone to see. Undergraduate programs have given
students resources to proofreaders like East Carolina s writing center. I believe all schools should
provide resources for proofreading and social work professors should place a huge emphasis on
proofreading your

Analysis of Citibank s Web Presence
Analysis of Citibank s Web Presence Website Product Information The bank sells its full slate of
products on its website. At the top of the home page is a list of pull down menus (banking, credit
cards, lending, etc.) which display all of the product offerings. Banking includes all of the traditional
account types that a person can open or, in some way, access. The banking tab displays a menu that
includes types of accounts and services that are available to Citibank s customers. Accounts include
checking and different savings options which can then be pulled down to reveal even more options.
The checking tab has four different types that are geared toward four different categories of customer,
and some specialty accounts. These are named basic checking, the Citibank account, Citigold interest
checking the Citibank student account, and there have even been accounts started specifically with
women in mind (Yadav, 2004). All of the other banking options offer similar pull down menus which
give the customer a variety of options and details what the various options entail. Under the credit
cards tab the company helps the customer choose what type of card they want by asking them to
answer some questions first. The borrower is asked what type of card they are looking for, what
financial options they want and what rewards the individual desires. All of this is to help choose the
appropriate card for the particular customer. The tabs across the top of the page continue with

Retirement Planning
Retirement
By: tena
E mail: tena2001@aol.com
Retirement Retirement seems to be one of the most often overlooked areas of people s future plan.
Simply because it seems so far away, it is an area that is subject to procrastination. People are
expected to live longer now than ever before, this is another reason why young adults and teenagers
are not worried about saving for their retirement. The baby boom generation, the seventy seven
million people born between 1943 and 1960, face an entirely different retirement plan. As they began
to retire, people are starting to think that there will be no money left and this will turn into a crisis.
What will happen when seventy seven million baby boomers begin to want the money they paid in

The Roth Ira is mainly for people who do not want to deal with all of the complex rules or worry
about paying taxes on future withdrawals. What are 401k s? A 401k s is an employee s best friend. It
is a plan that allows employees to contribute a certain percent of their salary up to a specified
maximum. These contributions are tax deductible and your earnings are tax deferred until withdrawn.
Your employer can also provide matching contributions up to a certain percent as an additional
benefit. According to the Washington, D.C. based Employee Benefit Research Institute, about forty
percent of all workers are offered a 401k type plan, and of those, seventy five percent participate in it.
The employees that are not taking advantage of the 401k plan just have not been educated about it,
says Tom Foster, ERISA attorney for John Hancock Life in Boston. Another thing that is good for
retirement is Mutual funds. A mutual fund is an investment vehicle that invests in the financial
markets, such as stocks, bonds, and so on. Mutual funds give investors a chance to play with their
money under the supervision of an experienced fund manager. There is a wide variety of funds
available. There are Equity Funds for the most aggressive investors who will endure higher risk. Then
there are Balanced Funds for the middle of –the road investors who want to combine equity
investments with income investments such as bonds. Then lastly there are Income Funds for the

Treisman s Attention Study
A second model of attention comes from Treisman s attenuation model (1960). This suggests that
incoming stimuli undergo three tests analysing different characteristics of the stimuli. With a lexicon
between sensory feature information and the filter, the meaning of words are automatically activated.
According to this model, attention is required for processing items at higher levels, but for individual
words, attention is not obligatory.
Support for Treisman s attenuation model emanates from the findings of Cherry and Kruger (1983). In
the presence of a distractor in the non shadowed channel, particularly semantic, the ability of learning
disabled children to point to pictures relating to words in the shadowed channel was significantly
worse, highlighting an inability to control the attenuation of non shadowed messages. Since a matched
pairs design was used, extraneous variables such as individual differences were reduced, which
increases our confidence in the findings. Although, like in many other attention studies, the DLT is
artificial, making it difficult to generalise findings from the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Subjects were required to make two responses (shadow and tap) to target words in shadowed
messages, whilst only being required to make one response (tap) to those in the non shadowed
messages, which explicitly suggests that shadowed messages were more important, potentially
persuading subjects to focus more attention. Thus, results may have been influenced by methodology
more than the influence of selective attention. Albeit, a replication of the study was conducted in
which the same response was used for both messages (Treisman Riley, 1969). Many more target
words were still detected from the shadowed message. Thus, all in all, these findings provide strong

Engineering Performance-Based Fire Codes
Preliminary views on implementing Engineering Performance Based Fire Codes in Hong Kong: What
should be done? Abstract Engineering performance based fire codes (EPBFC) are to be developed in
Hong Kong. Before implementing EPBFC, or even writing down what should be done, such as the fire
safety objectives, current prescriptive fire codes should be understood. This will be a very big project
to be tackled step by step, certainly not regarded as a normal consultancy project which can be
completed within a short period of, say three years. Key points on suitability of implementing EPBFC
in Hong Kong, or preserving prescriptive codes but with active updating are discussed. Approaches
used overseas are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In fact, before deciding whether to stick to prescriptive codes with active updating or to use EPBFC,
well planned long term investigational works should be carried out. This should also be a life long
research project for upgrading the code to solve new problems encountered. This was well recognized
by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). There, EPBFC has been studied since 1995 with
some support of Area of Strategic Development: Construction Industry Development Studies and
Research Centre. A journal [37] reporting the development, problems encountered, scientific
principles, engineering judgements and practical examples was established. It appears that if EPBFC
is applied properly by experts with good training in fire safety engineering such as those holding PhD
degrees, and with practical engineering experience up to Chartered Engineer status, the following can
be achieved as reported in the literature [13 34]: ← Better fire safety provisions than described in the
older versions of prescriptive codes for both passive and active fire safety measures [18]. ←
Regulations requiring systems that might not work in a fire or even give adverse effect can be pointed
out and updated. The requirements of installing sprinkler at high headroom atrium and in escape
staircases are obvious examples. This is similar to imposing the local speed limit of 50 km per hour in
downtown areas where almost all drivers will not pay attention to!

Analysis Of Weaver In The Landlady
Roald Dahl s short story The Landlady is about Billy Weaver s encounter with the Landlady has an
odd hobby of practicing taxidermy on humans. Billy Weaver becomes one of the victims. He is the
most interesting character because he does not find the landlady s behaviour when he first meets her,
or doubt her even though she has dropped many hints along the way. Also, he teaches the readers
unwanted consequences from judging by appearances.
Billy Weaver is an interesting character because he trusts someone he just meets when there are few
hints that she may not be as kind as she looks. Billy Weaver looks at Bed and Breakfast, which was
filled with peasant furniture , and is attracted to the place. When he presses the bell, [the landlady]

but a representation of naïve people including young children, teenagers and inexperienced members
in society. Appearance is easy to see, but someone s real self is not easy to see, so naïve people can be
fooled easily like Billy Weaver. They can be easily deceived by good appearances and end up with
unwanted consequences such as kidnap, sexual harassment, fraud and death. If Billy Weaver had not

Economics Of Latin Americ Costa Rica
Jonathan Boyd Kayla Delgado Teral Hillard 04/21/2015 Economics of Latin America: (Costa Rica)
Costa Rica is bordered by Nicaragua and Panama in the Northwest part of Latin America. The
population is 4.77 million as of December 2014, with an unemployment rate of 10 percent. The
currency for Costa Rica is the Costa Rica Colon (CRC) and the exchange rate to the dollar is 539.3
2014 CRC per US dollar (WFB). Although their economy is growing, with a 5 percent growth rate in
2006, Costa Rica s public infrastructure has been a huge problem for many years (Trading Economics,
2015). It suffered from a lack of maintenance and new investment. The country has an extensive road
system of more than 30,000 kilometers, and although much of it is in disrepair, most parts of the
country are only accessible by road (U.S. Department of State, n.d.). In the past, Costa Rica has relied
heavily on their presidents to change the way the country works. Jose Figueres was probably the most
impactful on Costa Rica in terms of making it easier for the state intervene in the economy. Costa Rica
has gone through much change throughout its existence in our history. An estimated 400,000 Indians
inhabited the land when Christopher Columbus explored its country in 1502 (Anywhere Costa Rica,

combination of factors, including disease from mosquito infested swamps, brutal heat, resistance by

Learner Autonomy
What is Learner Autonomy and How Can It Be Fostered?
Dimitrios Thanasoulas
The Internet TESL Journal
2. What is Autonomy?
For a definition of autonomy, we might quote Holec (1981: 3, cited in Benson Voller, 1997: 1) who
describes it as the ability to take charge of one s learning . On a general note, the term autonomy has
come to be used in at least five ways (see Benson Voller, 1997: 2): for situations in which learners
study entirely on their own; for a set of skills which can be learned and applied in self directed
learning; for an inborn capacity which is suppressed by institutional education; for the exercise of
learners responsibility for their own learning; for the right of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net
...
This stands to reason, for most of the characteristics imputed to the autonomous learner encapsulate a
wide range of attributes not commonly associated with learners. For instance, Benn (1976, cited in
Candy, 1991: 102) likens the autonomous learner to one [w]hose life has a consistency that derives
from a coherent set of beliefs, values, and principles [and who engages in a] still continuing process of
criticism and re evaluation , while Rousseau ([1762] 1911, cited in Candy, 1991: 102) regards the
autonomous learner as someone who is obedient to a law that he prescribes to himself . Within the
context of education, though, there seem to be seven main attributes characterising autonomous
learners (see Omaggio, 1978, cited in Wenden, 1998: 41 42): 1. Autonomous learners have insights
into their learning styles and strategies; 2. take an active approach to the learning task at hand; 3. are
willing to take risks, i.e., to communicate in the target language at all costs; 4. are good guessers; 5.
attend to form as well as to content, that is, place importance on accuracy as well as appropriacy; 6.
develop the target language into a separate reference system and are willing to revise and reject
hypotheses and rules that do not apply; and 7. have a tolerant and outgoing approach to the target
language.
Here, some comments with respect to the preceding list are called for. The points briefly touched upon

My Resilience
I did not have a normal childhood. I experienced a death of a parent, the other being an alcoholic,
lived through abuse, and lived in foster care. It is no wonder I battle with a mental illness, however, I
do not let the disorder run my life. It has been over 6 years since my last hospitalization. I strongly
feel the factors that have contributed to my resilience consist of self determination, a strong support
system, proper coping mechanisms and therapy. Resilience according to the Center on the Developing
Child at Harvard University, is the ability to adapt to a situation that may alter an individual s lifestyle
in a positive way, without being consumed by the negative outcomes (National Scientific Council on
Developing Child, 2015).

The Great Commission To Worship Book Review
Abstract The idea behind the book The Great Commission To Worship by David Wheeler and Vernon
Whaley is the combining of worship and evangelism, Thus evangelism and worship have a unique
relationship. ... many times in Scripture it appears that while God is always our object of worship, the
concept of obtaining salvation (evangelism) appears to be the motivation (11). As stated by the authors
this book is the result of an argument between them as to which was more important, worship or
evangelism. The book first shows the misconceptions that today s Christians have placed on these two
concepts by placing them into two different classifications. After dispelling these arguments the
authors present the biblical relationship between these two concepts. The authors spend the majority
of the book expounding the idea of what they call the Great Commission Worshiper. (5) The where,
how, and why of the Great Commission Worshiper is examined and expounded. They first define what
a Great Commission Worshiper is, then how to develop this person, and finally how to reproduce
Great Commission Worshipers. This is all accomplished through a mix of testimonies, both personal
to the authors and those of other people, and biblical examples. ... Show more content on

The true bizarreness of the film is shown in Max s insane hallucinations. The camera focuses in on
Max s right thumb twitching and shaking until his whole body is overcome by a massive migraine.
Throughout the film, Max is plagued by these headaches, each beginning with a camera close up of
his twitching thumb. The dramatic effect is intensified by a mess of techno, chaotic sounding music
until suddenly there is silence signaling the end of Max s pain and the beginning of his strange
hallucinations. The ordeal is always ended by a flash of light, identical to the one he saw after his first
headache at the origin of his genius. He narrates of his first headache at the age of six, caused by
staring into the sun, leaving him blind for several days. When the bandages finally came off, he saw a

Max his special ability to understand mathematics and his amazing grasp of the number theory. The
movie contains several bits of narration like this by the main character, intended to give the viewer a

My Greatest Accomplishment Was Being A Three Time...
My greatest accomplishment was being a three time heavyweight champion. I got my first title when I
was 22. The fight was February 25, 1964 in Miami Beach, Florida. I was a 7 1 underdog against that
ugly bear, named Sonny Liston. I told him he was too ugly to be a champion and I should be the
Champ because I was young, fast, and handsome. I was right, I beat that ugly bear in the seventh
round. Float like a butterfly sting like a bee is what I told that him. After that fight, I won 11 fights
before losing the belt to Joe frazier. Then in 1975 I regained the title back by beating him in 15
rounds. I said no one could beat me twice and I meant it. Unfortunately, I later lost it to some chump
named Leon Spikes in 15 rounds. Never count me out because I won the title back again one more
time. I got revenge on Leon Spikes and got back what was mine in a unanimous decision. I finished
my boxing career with a 55 6 record and best of all being called the greatest of all time, which I
cannot disagree with. The biggest obstacle people thought I would have, was to overcome being an
african american. But I took pride in the fact that I was labeled black. Especially during the time when
it was mostly white athletes in professional sports. My biggest obstacle was being a Black Muslim,
because the Black Muslims had a bad reputation for hating white people or thinking they were evil.

The First Path Of Formation Of The Kazakh Diaspora
Repression was blown to frightening enormous proportions. Repressions even reached the traditional
knowledge holders Kazakh shamans baksi , which J. Assmann calls special carriers of cultural
memory [13].
During this period, the trend of migration had been strengthened, and about a million ethnic Kazakhs
was forced to migrate from their historic homeland to neighboring countries. It was the first path of
formation of the Kazakh Diaspora, but there was also a second way: creation of state borders
separated part of the kazakh people and made it difficult to communicate with the main ethnic masses
[14], this process in science is called irredentism [15]. Thus, in the second half of the XIX century
after the establishment of the Russian Chinese border part of Kazakhs who had been wintering in the
former Qing Empire territory was in the allegiance of China. Subsequently, in 1916 after the
suppression of the anti colonial rebellion in 1932 1934. During dispossession, collectivisation and
famine some Kazakh tribes migrated from Kazakhstan to Xinjiang and took Chinese citizenship [16].
The main concentration of the Kazakh migrant fell on Russia, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran, Turkey,
Mongolia and China.
Due to the special historical and political circumstances, one nation was artificially split into two parts
repatriates and local , which naturally provoke the break of once united culture in two, conventionally

Different Roles of Political Parties
Different Roles of Political Parties Government Essay
In the United States, there are three major groups and they are: political party, interest group and
lobbyist, and the media. These three main groups are important and each of them plays a different
role. Also they can give a positive or a negative impact on the American Political System and on the
people in the United States.
One of the main groups is political party. A major political party can be defined as a group of people
who seek in control of government through winning the election, and holding a public office but the
minor party is different. Their role is to play spoiler role in an election and this party can also be

Interest groups are the main group in the United States. Interest groups are the private organizations
whose members share certain views and work to shape the making and the content of public policy.
Also they are known as pressure group or special interest. Interest groups try to influence the policies
of the government and they do strike on the one thing they focus on. This group gives a lot of positive
impacts to America. These groups don t seek for votes; they are only interested in influencing the
policies of government and they help to stimulate the interests in public affairs. Also they provide
useful specialized and detailed information to the government. In addition to that these groups provide
checks and balances on each other and the behavior of officials in the government. Interest groups are
mostly found in economic interest and they use propaganda, which is a technique of persuasion aimed
at influencing individual or group behavior. Sometimes the lobbyist helps the interest groups by
lobbying. Lobbying is usually defined as those activities by which a group pressures are brought to
hear on legislators and the legislative process and this helps the interest groups to take their interests

Critique Of Ephesians 2
In the book of Ephesians 6:13 17 the bible talks about the putting on the full armor of God. In this
verse, the Christians are told to prepare for the spiritual war against the devil and human weaknesses.
Various versions of the bible that talk about the Armor of God. According to the verse, there is the war
against the Christians, and the people are warned against that. We are encouraged to use the Armor as
guidance in the fighting the Satan.
Description of the Armor of God According to St. Paul Ephesians is one of the letters written by St.
Paul while he was in prison. Paul was detained by the Roman army, and during his stay in jail, he
compared the soldier s armor and the spiritual Armor. He tells the Christians about the tactics and
devices that the devil uses against the people of God (2Corinthians 2:11, New International Version)
he talks to the people through this verse about the ways of dealing with the stealthy ways of Satan.
Paul addresses the people on the ways of dealing with this in the book of Ephesians 6:10 20. He
explains to the Ephesians about the wearing the Armor of God. In verse 10 he wrote Finally, my
brethren, be strong in the Lord and the power of His might Paul tries to speak to the Christians about
the ways of guarding themselves against the enemy. His message to the people of God according to
the book of Ephesians, he was encouraging the people not to fear the devil and his plans. He says Put

Research Paper On Unbroken
Unbroken is the story of Louie Zamperini, a kid from a small midwestern town who experiences the
highest of highs and the lowest of lows in his astounding life. Louie had to work his absolute hardest
to make the qualifying time for the 1937 Berlin Olympics. It took all of his willpower to survive forty
seven days stranded on the ocean and then another two years under extreme torture in a Japanese
POW camp. Finally after returning home he had to face his own demons in a battle with alcoholism
and save his failing marriage. I believe that the book Unbroken shows perseverance, hard work, and
faith can help you achieve all of goals in life and help you through any challenges life may throw at
you. To begin with Louie had a hard upbringing. He was one of four kids born to Italian immigrants
Anthony and Louise Zamperini. He was often bullied because of his parent s nationality and the way
he and his family spoke. He was always in some kind of trouble, claimed his mother. The police
caught him once, at age twelve, drinking bourbon out a milk bottle painted white. One day when his
mother had had enough of his antics she instructed his older brother to take Louie outside and make
him run until he learned his lesson. This became a daily occurrence Louie would get in trouble and he
would have to run longer every time. Then eventually came a time when he was running so much he
had no time to get in trouble and was too exhausted to start fights. This went on for about a year

occupation using O*NET was not difficult at all. For this assignment I was provided with step by step
instructions on how to get to the My Next Move page where a person can type in keywords to research
careers. At first glance the site can look intimidating but like any other site if you read the information
provided the page will help guide you in the right direction. I feel that a person navigating through the
site can still reach the locations they desire if they familiarize themselves with the page and once
again, read the information given. As I began reading information I noticed that each heading or

4. I would most certainly have my staff use this site for several reasons. As mentioned earlier, this site
contains so much information and different helpful tools to assist with HRM I think a company would
do itself an injustice not utilizing all that it has to offer. Consistently updated information, easy to read
instructions, examples, and point and click functions available at no cost all wrapped up in a complete
package make this at tool HR should not be without. I would have my staff use this site to keep our
job analysis up to date and accurate. When seeking potential employees it is in the interest of the
company as well as the applicant that the job seeker understands exactly what the company is in
search of and what they expect from them. Since the company web site has become the most popular

that state the minimum acceptable qualifications that the incumbent must possess to perform the job
successfully (DeCenzo, Robbins, 2012). The job specifications provide

Zen Meditation
Things You Should Know About Zen Meditation
We all struggle with stress from work or school. You can not close your eyes to leave them out, but
you can find peace so you can handle them. One technique that can offer this is Zen meditation.
Zen meditation is often referred to as the study of the self. It involves sitting in various positions to
bring mind and body into a peaceful and stable state. This happens when you focus on images and
thoughts that just pop up when your heart rate slows down until you reach a reflective state of
meditation.
One of the best seating positions for this is the Burmese position. There is also the full lotus, half
lotus, knee or seiza position and sits in a chair.
The key here is to keep your back straight so that your deep breathing goes naturally. This allows
more oxygen to purify and energize the body. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In addition to the right posture you should always wear loose clothing. It is not advisable to practice
this after a heavy meal, as a full stomach usually causes discomfort, which in itself is a distraction.
If you want to learn Zen Meditation, you can read about it or join a group. Once you get the hang of it,
you can even buy accessories to make the experience a fruitful experience, such as joss sticks, a bell,
or even a singing bowl that marks the beginning and end of a session.
Short incense burnsShort incense sticks burn for about 45 minutes while the longer ones are double
the time. You can even use the kitchen timer since no one will be there to ring the bell to say time is
up.
Zen meditation experts recommend that beginners should try for 10 minutes first until you get used to
it before you decide to extend this for 20 or 30 minutes. Should your mind wander off, concentrate a
little harder to focus once again on your breathing so your thoughts will settle down

Southern Comfort is often thought of as a whisky, however it is actually a liqueur made from a neutral
flavoured spirit with whisky, fruit and spice flavourings. Martin Wilkes Heron, an Irish immigrant

His customers often asked for a drink that was a little smoother than bourbon and straight whisky, so

The Six Sigma And Tools
2.3. Six sigma and tools
The Six Sigma improvement method is problem focused and its main objectives are decreasing scrap,
earning income and creating value (Saghaei et al, 2012). Motorola developed this concept in 1986.
There were three meanings of six sigma provided by Brue (2006). It is the level of quality that a
process assures, it is a problem solving methodology and lastly it is a management philosophy.
Alternatively it is also said to be a project driven approach to process and product quality
improvement (Ray and Das, 2010). This approach ensures the process to be 99.9996% defect free. The
performance level of a project can be obtained by subtracting the average of readings of errors in a

There are mostly two types of variation in a process. A common cause variation is an uncontrollable
variation that is bound to occur. Whereas special cause variation has a specific reason and occurs less
frequently. These variations are caused due to 5Ms; Man, Material, Machine, Method or
Measurement. These are unacceptable variations and can be developed or changed. There are six steps

Essay on The Prosecution and Tragic Death of Aaron Swartz
In light of the recent prosecution and tragic death of Aaron Swartz, it is my belief an formal
examination of the current legal processes is required. But first, the events leading to the current moral
turmoil must be reviewed.
After illegally downloading millions of articles from a digital library (JSTOR) with the intent to
distribute them online, computer programmer and political activist Aaron Swartz was caught and
arrested by MIT authorities. Under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act Aaron Swartz was federally
charged with numerous counts of Wire Fraud, Computer Fraud, and Unlawfully Obtaining

However in Aarron Swartz case where the amount of files were retrieved he did not receive a similar
punishment because of his methods used. Now with the rise in computer crime it is difficult to
measure the impact inflicted. However in the case of Aaron Swartz his crime has been described as
trying to put someone in jail for allegedly checking too many books out of the library (Declan, 2013).
However because of the current copyright laws in the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act he was
prosecuted differently. It is my opinion that in light of the significant threats posed by anonymous we
need to examine whether an abuse of justice was committed. I contacted a Professor Jonathan Simon
at University of California, Berkeley who specializes in Law and Social Policy to provide a third party
perspective on this matter. In his famed novel Governing Through Crime Professor Simon examines
the relationship between the fear of crime and the increase in Prosecutorial Authority. Historically
speaking, prosecutors possessed limited power but were intended to represent the public. However,
following social and political declaration of a war on crime, prosecutors were shifted into the political
spotlight with additional legal powers. During this progression a form of accountability and oversight
was not implemented proportionally. Simon specifically describes this concern

Arm Wrestling With My Father Rhetorical Analysis
The relationship between a father and their child is tremendously salient, and will influence the life of
both the parent and the adolescent in many ways. Often, it can be difficult for someone to share their
personal relationships that they had with their father, as it can be a very delicate subject. Despite this,
renowned authors Brad Manning and Sandra Cisneros are two people who chose to write about their
unique experiences and childhoods that they shared with their fathers. Both Brad and Sandra felt their
childhood relationships with their fathers were unorthodox. This was explicitly outlined in Brad s
freshman composition paper titled Arm Wrestling With My Father and Sandra s magazine article titled
Only Daughter. Through varying rhetorical strategies, the authors purpose and audience is clearly
portrayed in both selections. One of the most important components to any piece of writing is the
intended audience. In Arm Wrestling With My Father, Manning s intended audience is anyone who
may have had an abnormal or physical relationship with their father. He wanted his paper to be read
by individuals that grew up with a lack of emotional love and an abundance of physical contact with
their fathers. Although there was love between Manning and his father, it was clear that neither party
wanted to acknowledge it. He wrote this in his freshman composition course at Harvard, knowing that
although it was going to his professors, it was meant for anyone who may have experienced

Kidd Understanding Human Origins Summary
Kidd, like many European Christians, explains the importance of Genesis on understanding human
origins. Kidd points out the significance of Genesis by stating that this first book of the Bible explains
the origins of mankind, the peopling of the world by the sons of Noah, and the confusion of language
(Kidd, 19). Kidd then begins to explain how historians were tempted into researching how legitimate
the book of Genesis was and what the underlying similarity between the races was. Race quickly
became a theological problem that challenged the Bible and Christian teachings. It was important for
European Christians to prove the unity of race because it was fundamental to Christian theology
(Kidd, 26). If race was challenged and later stated that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was seen as a reliable source in understanding the world and how it came to be. Kidd begins to
focus on this idea and whether the Bible was a reliable source or if it only covered the history of
certain part, or parts, of the world (Kidd, 55). This phenomenon can most be seen with the discovery
of the New World and Native Americans. Kidd explains how the Bible did not mention anything of the
New World and most importantly the people living there. Other commentators of this idea questioned
which lineage, if any, did the Native Americans descend from and why did the Bible ignore the New
World. This spawned an entire new form of questioning the Bible and its credibility. It once again
challenged and undermined the Christian authority. It challenged the Christian authority by further
questioning if Noah and his sons populated the entire earth (Kidd, 57). European Christians then
turned to other parts of the Bible to make sense of this New World and its new people .
Throughout history, European Christians have used personal interpretations of the Bible to answer
questions of human origins. These interpretations of biblical passages have also pushed to question
biblical authority and its accountability. This has proved that it is significant to learn these specific
events in history because these events allow us to understand how historians tried so hard to make
sense of the Bible and ensure its authority. Biblical passages like the stories of Cain and Noah s sons
have paved interpretations for European Christians that lead to certain answers of human origins over

George Arnold And George Herbert s Dover Beach And Easter...
Some might claim human suffering is a natural part of life. Others may argue pain is inevitable, but
suffering is optional. The speaker in Matthew Arnold s Dover Beach appears to shield from the current
state of despair in the living world through the glorification of personal relationships. The speaker in
George Herbert s Easter Wings appears to simply embrace the world s suffering as a catalyst for God s
mercy, to bring strength and spiritual intimacy through Christ s crucifixion and resurrection. Both
speakers of Matthew Arnold s Dover Beach and George Herbert s Easter Wings lament the current
state of suffering in humanity. While the speakers may appear to have differing beliefs, they both have
hidden fears that place their hope in the afterlife. Arnold s Dover Beach opens with a tranquil scene. A
place where waves crash on the shoreline of the English Channel, and a couple gazes out a window at
the moonlit water. The speaker uses the imagery and sound of pebbles in the surf to create a metaphor
for the story of souls and the persistent, incremental decline of faith that his culture has suffered. The
poem ends with the suggestion of promulgating love in a world of violence and fear and pain. This is
actually a metaphor, for God is love. When the speaker promotes love between couples, this love is
what will help prove their faith, not denounce it.
In Dover Beach, the speaker appears to blame the retrograde of the Sea of Faith (line 21) for the world

Certain cleaning agents, like bleach, soaps that aren t biodegradable, and antibacterial soaps, can
weaken and even kill the bacteria that maintains septic system health. Additionally, too much
detergent released into the tank can be the cause of clogged soil pores, preventing drainage and
inciting backups. Typically, liquid detergents are the best option when it comes to healthy septic
systems.
Certain detergents are labeled to be safe for septic tanks, and they are almost liquid, because they have
fewer ingredients that can be harmful for septic tanks. Some dry detergents use clay as a filler, which
will cause clogs. Others may include sodium as a filler, which can also cause problems.
Combining good laundry habits with the five most important tips that can protect your tank will help
your septic system operate at its best, giving you and your family peace of mind and a protected

Drug Testing Satire
More muscles, more money? The bigger you are, the bigger the lies? Drug testing in sports is a
significant issue, even though people don t take it as serious as they should. This happens because
players in sports either don t have knowledge about steroids, or they feel the need to make themselves
look bigger. The problem is when they do take this drug, the players get away with it, and become
better than everyone else. That s why I think drug testing should alter their way of testing to make the
games even.
It all starts when players use the performance enhancing drugs and pass the drug test. When the others
get word about this, some of them might take that shot and take the performance enhancing drug too.
This is how it spreads between athletes

such as vitamins, and minerals that are essential for healthy growth and developments. The body only

each micronutrient makes proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids equally important in my diet. Proteins

The Effect Of Soft Tissue Constituent Materials
The goal of this thesis is to identify the effect of soft tissue constituent materials in tissue classification
for the application of breast cancer detection. Hyperelastic parameters may be essential in estimating
large deformation in tissue for the purpose of surgical procedures such as breast brachytherapy. These
properties of human soft tissue play a significant role in diagnosis, screening, and monitoring of
cancer (O Hagan Samani,
2009). On the other hand, elastography is based mainly on the concept of tissue reactions (linear and
nonlinear) to an external source of load such as compression.
Moreover, in most breast examination methods, compression is applied to help detect lesions. In CBE
and BSE, the examiner applies a compressive load to the breast to investigate stiff regions and must
sometimes exert a large deformation to feel lesions in depth. Mammography also uses compression to
reduce breast thickness. Additionally, compressive behavior of human breast biopsies obtained
through lumpectomy (the surgical procedure to remove a cancer or non cancer breast lump with some
surrounding tissues) is of interest to the cancer research agencies in order to distinguish the
mechanical nature of anomalies of the taken biopsy. Despite of the importance of compressive loading
and its contribution to hyperelastic characterization of tissue in

applications of cancer detection, few studies have focused on the behavior of tissue components in
response to compression. The main

The California Clapper Rail and Its Preservation
California Clapper Rail (A) Description and Ecology The California Clapper Rail, Rallus longirostris
obsoletus, is a northern California bird that typically resides in the San Francisco Bay Estuary, and can
be seen as south as San Luis Obispo and Morro Bay. The clapper rail is part of the order Gruiformes
and the family Rallidae. It is one of the largest birds in the Rallidae family, measuring 32 47 cm bill to
tail typically. Males on average weigh 300 350g and females weigh in at 248 301g. Clapper rails have
the physical appearance of a hen, however with a long, orange bill, that is not a feature of a hen. They
typically have black and white sides and white feathers under the tail. The difference between an
adolescent and an adult is that the young have a paler bill, a gray body, and black sides. California
clapper rails are very similar to Virginia clapper rails, but the California rail is slightly larger. Rails are
known for being very secretive, which makes spotting them in the wild very difficult. They are very
sensitive to disturbances in the wild, and if they sense something, they typically either freeze, hide or
run to avoid the disturbance. Rails are also known to be able to swim if necessary to escape a predator.
The calls of clapper rails are all variations of the same note, and factors of the call include population
size, time of day, tides, and weather. The clapper is the most common call by the clapper rail itself.

8th Grade Singing
Hello,
There are quite a few pedagogical reasons why Rachel and I have decided to combine both choirs.
Below are just a few. My 8th grade boys were having a hard time singing do to voice changes. I tried
to keep the boys up in their falsetto and while this worked for a few boys the others we not able to
produce certain notes. When boys voices start to change it can result in them only being able to sing a
very limited amount of notes. We worked on high trills, sliding, humming, yawning, held long tones,
among many of other to help support their changing voices. After our first concert I talked with my
boys and they had mentioned that they felt very discouraged about singing because some of them
simply are not producing notes or can only sing in a low rumble. Rachel mentioned to me that her
boys were just starting to transition and she was noticing large gaps in her group as well. Combining
both groups would result in a higher confidence level, tone production, and create a full choir sound.
This is one of the reasons why we combined the groups. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

I aim to explain the drug development process, to explore the legal and ethical implications associated
with wrongful off label prescribing, and provide my recommendations for reform of the
pharmaceutical industry. I will consistently refer to the GlaxoSmithKline case to display the
maleficent inner workings of the multinational pharmaceutical company. Glaxo was involved in the
biggest health care fraud settlement in U.S. history for introducing and encouraging physicians to off

instruments played together. It was in 1969 when Jerry Butler released his latest song Only the Strong

of bands were performing disco numbers. Disco was the in thing and a lot of movies were made on the
disco theme too. Saturday night fever starring John Travolta and Thank God It s Friday were two big

This document is often described as the blueprint and original template for the numerous Bill of Rights and constitutions which exist today. Unlike other countries, such as the USA, the UK does not have a written constitution setting out its citizens civil liberties. Common law may account for many of the UK s long recognised civil liberties however it is the documents which exemplify liberties which are still enforced today, such as habeas corpus: anyone who has been arrested or otherwise deprived of their liberty, may apply for a judge to oversee the legality of this decision. With the UK currently a party to the European Convention of Human Rights (ECHR) and the Human Rights Act 1998 (HRA 1998), it is becoming ever more important to understand what defines a civil liberties and whether civil liberties and human rights can be viewed as interchangeable concepts. This essay aims to examine: the origins and apparent ambiguity of civil liberties and human rights; the two different approaches offered by the author of Textbook on Civil Liberties and Human Rights, Richard Stone; and Ewing and Gearty s slant, as noted in The Struggle for Civil Liberties; whether civil liberties are distinct from human rights will also be explored, and ... • 4. Social Work Field Report It is obvious that writing plays a crucial role in a field such as social work. Many first year social work majors often wonder why such emphasis is placed on writing so early in their studies. Social Work majors must learn to write clearly, effectively, and appropriately because it will help them later on in their careers. Introduction and Objectives As a first year social work major, I was interested to know the impact writing has on other graduate students and professionals in my discourse community. Before I began my research, I knew that I would be required to type papers related to practices in social work and field reflections, but I wanted to know more about the professional writing I would need to be able to do further into my career. The goal of this report is to show the importance of writing early in a social worker s career and to show how writing effectively is crucial in the field of social work. Method To accomplish the goals of the report, I set out to interview other students and professionals in my discourse community. I interviewed a graduate student, a current social worker, and a professor. Anna Batts is currently in her second and final year of the Masters of Social Work program at East Carolina University. • 7. Treisman s Attention Study A second model of attention comes from Treisman s attenuation model (1960). This suggests that incoming stimuli undergo three tests analysing different characteristics of the stimuli. With a lexicon between sensory feature information and the filter, the meaning of words are automatically activated. According to this model, attention is required for processing items at higher levels, but for individual words, attention is not obligatory. Support for Treisman s attenuation model emanates from the findings of Cherry and Kruger (1983). In the presence of a distractor in the non shadowed channel, particularly semantic, the ability of learning disabled children to point to pictures relating to words in the shadowed channel was significantly worse, highlighting an inability to control the attenuation of non shadowed messages. Abstract Engineering performance based fire codes (EPBFC) are to be developed in Hong Kong. In fact, before deciding whether to stick to prescriptive codes with active updating or to use EPBFC, well planned long term investigational works should be carried out. There, EPBFC has been studied since 1995 with some support of Area of Strategic Development: Construction Industry Development Studies and Research Centre. A journal [37] reporting the development, problems encountered, scientific principles, engineering judgements and practical examples was established. It appears that if EPBFC is applied properly by experts with good training in fire safety engineering such as those holding PhD degrees, and with practical engineering experience up to Chartered Engineer status, the following can be achieved as reported in the literature [13 34]: ← Better fire safety provisions than described in the older versions of prescriptive codes for both passive and active fire safety measures [18]. ← Regulations requiring systems that might not work in a fire or even give adverse effect can be pointed out and updated. For a definition of autonomy, we might quote Holec (1981: 3, cited in Benson Voller, 1997: 1) who describes it as the ability to take charge of one s learning . On a general note, the term autonomy has come to be used in at least five ways (see Benson Voller, 1997: 2): for situations in which learners study entirely on their own; for a set of skills which can be learned and applied in self directed learning; for an inborn capacity which is suppressed by institutional education; for the exercise of learners responsibility for their own learning; for the right of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Within the context of education, though, there seem to be seven main attributes characterising autonomous learners (see Omaggio, 1978, cited in Wenden, 1998: 41 42): 1. Autonomous learners have insights into their learning styles and strategies; 2. take an active approach to the learning task at hand; 3. are willing to take risks, i.e., to communicate in the target language at all costs; 4. are good guessers; 5. attend to form as well as to content, that is, place importance on accuracy as well as appropriacy; 6. develop the target language into a separate reference system and are willing to revise and reject hypotheses and rules that do not apply; and 7. have a tolerant and outgoing approach to the target language. As stated by the authors this book is the result of an argument between them as to which was more important, worship or evangelism. The book first shows the misconceptions that today s Christians have placed on these two concepts by placing them into two different classifications. After dispelling these arguments the authors present the biblical relationship between these two concepts. The authors spend the majority of the book expounding the idea of what they call the Great Commission Worshiper. One of the best seating positions for this is the Burmese position. There is also the full lotus, half lotus, knee or seiza position and sits in a chair. The key here is to keep your back straight so that your deep breathing goes naturally. This allows more oxygen to purify and energize the body. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His customers often asked for a drink that was a little smoother than bourbon and straight whisky, so Heron mixed fruit and spices with bourbon and created what he called Cuffs and Buttons . • 28. Arm Wrestling With My Father Rhetorical Analysis The relationship between a father and their child is tremendously salient, and will influence the life of both the parent and the adolescent in many ways. Often, it can be difficult for someone to share their personal relationships that they had with their father, as it can be a very delicate subject. Despite this, renowned authors Brad Manning and Sandra Cisneros are two people who chose to write about their unique experiences and childhoods that they shared with their fathers. Both Brad and Sandra felt their childhood relationships with their fathers were unorthodox. This was explicitly outlined in Brad s freshman composition paper titled Arm Wrestling With My Father and Sandra s magazine article titled Only Daughter. Through varying rhetorical strategies, the authors purpose and audience is clearly portrayed in both selections. One of the most important components to any piece of writing is the intended audience. In Arm Wrestling With My Father, Manning s intended audience is anyone who may have had an abnormal or physical relationship with their father. He wanted his paper to be read by individuals that grew up with a lack of emotional love and an abundance of physical contact with their fathers. Although there was love between Manning and his father, it was clear that neither party wanted to acknowledge it. • 29. Kidd Understanding Human Origins Summary Kidd, like many European Christians, explains the importance of Genesis on understanding human origins. Kidd points out the significance of Genesis by stating that this first book of the Bible explains the origins of mankind, the peopling of the world by the sons of Noah, and the confusion of language (Kidd, 19). Kidd then begins to explain how historians were tempted into researching how legitimate the book of Genesis was and what the underlying similarity between the races was. Race quickly became a theological problem that challenged the Bible and Christian teachings. It was important for European Christians to prove the unity of race because it was fundamental to Christian theology (Kidd, 26). If race was challenged and later stated that ... Kidd begins to focus on this idea and whether the Bible was a reliable source or if it only covered the history of certain part, or parts, of the world (Kidd, 55). This phenomenon can most be seen with the discovery of the New World and Native Americans. Kidd explains how the Bible did not mention anything of the New World and most importantly the people living there. Other commentators of this idea questioned which lineage, if any, did the Native Americans descend from and why did the Bible ignore the New World. This spawned an entire new form of questioning the Bible and its credibility. It once again challenged and undermined the Christian authority. It challenged the Christian authority by further questioning if Noah and his sons populated the entire earth (Kidd, 57). European Christians then turned to other parts of the Bible to make sense of this New World and its new people . Throughout history, European Christians have used personal interpretations of the Bible to answer questions of human origins. These interpretations of biblical passages have also pushed to question biblical authority and its accountability. This has proved that it is significant to learn these specific events in history because these events allow us to understand how historians tried so hard to make sense of the Bible and ensure its authority. The speaker in Matthew Arnold s Dover Beach appears to shield from the current state of despair in the living world through the glorification of personal relationships. The speaker in George Herbert s Easter Wings appears to simply embrace the world s suffering as a catalyst for God s mercy, to bring strength and spiritual intimacy through Christ s crucifixion and resurrection. Both speakers of Matthew Arnold s Dover Beach and George Herbert s Easter Wings lament the current state of suffering in humanity. While the speakers may appear to have differing beliefs, they both have hidden fears that place their hope in the afterlife. Arnold s Dover Beach opens with a tranquil scene. A place where waves crash on the shoreline of the English Channel, and a couple gazes out a window at the moonlit water. The speaker uses the imagery and sound of pebbles in the surf to create a metaphor for the story of souls and the persistent, incremental decline of faith that his culture has suffered. The poem ends with the suggestion of promulgating love in a world of violence and fear and pain. This is actually a metaphor, for God is love. When the speaker promotes love between couples, this love is what will help prove their faith, not denounce it. • 37. The Effect Of Soft Tissue Constituent Materials The goal of this thesis is to identify the effect of soft tissue constituent materials in tissue classification for the application of breast cancer detection. Hyperelastic parameters may be essential in estimating large deformation in tissue for the purpose of surgical procedures such as breast brachytherapy. These properties of human soft tissue play a significant role in diagnosis, screening, and monitoring of cancer (O Hagan Samani, 2009). On the other hand, elastography is based mainly on the concept of tissue reactions (linear and nonlinear) to an external source of load such as compression. Moreover, in most breast examination methods, compression is applied to help detect lesions. In CBE and BSE, the examiner applies a compressive load to the breast to investigate stiff regions and must sometimes exert a large deformation to feel lesions in depth. Mammography also uses compression to reduce breast thickness. Additionally, compressive behavior of human breast biopsies obtained through lumpectomy (the surgical procedure to remove a cancer or non cancer breast lump with some surrounding tissues) is of interest to the cancer research agencies in order to distinguish the mechanical nature of anomalies of the taken biopsy. Despite of the importance of compressive loading and its contribution to hyperelastic characterization of tissue in 9 applications of cancer detection, few studies have focused on the behavior of tissue components in response to compression. The clapper rail is part of the order Gruiformes and the family Rallidae. It is one of the largest birds in the Rallidae family, measuring 32 47 cm bill to tail typically. Males on average weigh 300 350g and females weigh in at 248 301g. Clapper rails have the physical appearance of a hen, however with a long, orange bill, that is not a feature of a hen. They typically have black and white sides and white feathers under the tail. The difference between an adolescent and an adult is that the young have a paler bill, a gray body, and black sides. California clapper rails are very similar to Virginia clapper rails, but the California rail is slightly larger. Rails are known for being very secretive, which makes spotting them in the wild very difficult. They are very sensitive to disturbances in the wild, and if they sense something, they typically either freeze, hide or run to avoid the disturbance. Rails are also known to be able to swim if necessary to escape a predator. I tried to keep the boys up in their falsetto and while this worked for a few boys the others we not able to produce certain notes. When boys voices start to change it can result in them only being able to sing a very limited amount of notes. We worked on high trills, sliding, humming, yawning, held long tones, among many of other to help support their changing voices. After our first concert I talked with my boys and they had mentioned that they felt very discouraged about singing because some of them simply are not producing notes or can only sing in a low rumble. Rachel mentioned to me that her boys were just starting to transition and she was noticing large gaps in her group as well.
