language devices to characterize Ying ying s emotions of sorrow, disconnection, shame, love, her
passive, careless personality, and her quality of mind of determination.
The use of language devices creates Ying ying s emotions of sorrow and her passive personality and
quality of mind. Throughout the novel, Ying ying mentions that her daughter Lena and she are ghosts.
