1.1 INTRODUCTION
Modern technology has added a new ingredient to this mix the Internet. The Internet can be
regarded as a cheaper and improved version of the self education resources. Some people like to
take exam in a classroom is traditional manual examination because they are happy to sit there and
have the teacher tell them what to learn, and when they get stuck, they are happy that there is
someone there to help them, and they enjoy the social environment while taking exam. The
traditional approach to measuring a person s level of knowledge in a topic has been the

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Nootropics
Attention Deficit Disorder is diagnosed two ways: with or without hyperactivity. The inclusion
of hyperactivity is what makes the difference between a diagnosis of ADD or ADHD. With
children between the ages of 6 and 12 being the most commonly diagnosed ages, it has also been
known to continue as they get older. With school aged children being affected the most, it can
become severely difficult for the student and teacher to work out a solution. Sure, the children can
be given the commonly prescribed medications, but they don t get excluded from possible
dependency or addiction. When it comes to prescribing medications for ADHD, physicians are
more apt to stick to the type that they know will work and these are Adderall and Ritalin.
Although these two drugs work for ADHD, many people today are starting to explore options that
involve the use of alternatives that pose no adverse reactions or long term effects. To help assist the
many people affected by this disorder who want a safer alternative, we will explore the many
benefits that can be obtained by using nootropics. Among the many alternatives, the best types
available include the nootropics noopept, racetam, and modafinil. These three nootropics have
proven to be very effective at improving cognition, but each... Show more content on

Besides that, it has also been used as an alternative form of treatment for depression. However, the
amount of research is limited when it comes to its ability to treat ADHD. With that being said,
there has been one study conducted on 28 ADHD diagnosed children to determine selegiline s
effect on ADHD. The results showed a significant decrease in ADHD symptoms and side effects
related to Selegiline usage. With this being preliminary research, it has demonstated its ability to be

Smarter Than You Think Summary
Technology: Embrace Change
If there is one consistency in life, then it is the one of change and we as a human race will need
to find a way to adapt to it. As the ancient philosopher Heraclitus of Ephesus articulated with a
brilliant and memorable statement on the river of flux that life is like a river: We both step and do
not step in the same rivers. We are and are not (B49a). What Heraclitus points out for those who are
unfamiliar with this school of thought is, that the natural state of life is change where everything
including ourselves is constantly shifting, changing, and becoming something other to what it was
before. This theory that life is like a river is useful because it sheds light on a human challenge to
accept change. According ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Out of my own experience with living abroad is that my smartphone has exactly given me that
feeling. However, when looking back at the time when I got my first cell phone where it only
had two functions, calling and text messaging. I can remember my resistance with this new
technology. At that time receiving and sending text messages was quite challenging because by
being unfamiliar with the new and also less advanced technology. In fact, I believed that a text
message is an unpractical, useless, and complicated way to communicate. These days the
mobile industry is completely revolutionized, and now I embrace technology with its changes. I
had to realize that technology was not the issue, but it was my resistance to learn how to work
with it. One decade ago I could have never imagined the benefits and possibilities of this
industry; however, I m glad that I went with the flow of change by stepping into the river of flux.
It was never easier to stay connected with my family and friends overseas. To let them be part of
my life but also to take part in theirs at any time. Although I agree that smartphones cannot replace
face to face time, it certainly can give us the feeling of being connected with our loved

Generation Me, And Not Everyone Gets A Trophy
There is a problem in the workplace...It is a problem of values, ambitions, views, mind sets,
demographics, and generations in conflict. The workplace you and we inhabit today is awash
with the conflicting voices and views of the most age and value diverse workforce this country
has known since our great great grandparents abandoned field and farm for factory and office.

Gen Y s have different aims then their parent s, are extremely adaptable and a have quite an
exceptional talent for technology. It is up to businesses to harness the strengths of the youth,
guide and incorporate them into their workplace. Norman B. Ryder (1965) defines a generation
as a society wide peer group, born over a period of roughly the same length... Who collectively
possess a common persona. Every generation is limited to a specific number of experiences and
historical events (Schuman Scott, 1989). These events build the foundation for future attitudes,
traits and behaviours, and also make the generation more inclined to habitus , lifestyles and
dispositions (Eyerman Turner, 1998; Gilleard, 2004; Ryder, 1965). Growing up is therefore a
dynamic process which is unique to the generation of the time. People identify with others who
share the same formative experiences as their own (Dencker et al., 2008). Sharing a generational
identity will result in common workplace expectations, and when these expectations are not met
employers are met with dissatisfaction, lack of commitment and the intention of quitting (Joshi et
al. 2011). Picking on the younger generation is a past time. The young have been picked on for
decades as the lazy generation (Thomson, M., 1945) This is not generationally bound, but the traits

Crossing Brooklyn Ferry Poem Analysis
Walt WhitmanВґs poem Crossing Brooklyn Ferry uses the theme of time to communicate a sense of
Trancendentalist unity. Whitman s Transcendentalist speaker enters the appearances and usual
costumes of the universe of wonders keeping in mind the end goal to find the truth that ties each
and all together in one
The speaker, as The title already indicates taking a ferry in New York, does not waste any time
before presenting the idea that all humans are united in their common experience. The narrator
imagines those who will cross the river in the future, this could also indicate a metaphor for the
overall journey of a human life. He is very optimistic and at ease :He and also everyone else is to

What the push of reading could not start is started by me personally, is it not? In the last section
of the poem ,once again all the images of the ferry ride are one by one reprised and united together
like „The glories strung like beads on my smallest sights and hearings It serves to help the reader
to remember all that preceded. While before he demonstrated things independently, blended with his
own contemplations, here he consolidates them into one major celebration.
This segment, and the whole poem, comes full circle in a last stanza where Whitman utilizes the
pronoun we again, as though the reader and the speaker have at last been joined together. We are
now able to see the world with new perspective or „free sense When something has been
encountered, that experience stays with the individual:„We use you, and do not cast you aside
we plant you/ permanently within us/We fathom you not we love you there is perfection in you also

The Four Frames
To be considered an effective leader, it is known to utilize multiple frames. The four frames:
Structural Leadership, Human Resource Leadership, Political Leadership, and Symbolic
Leadership. Each of these leadership consist of different characteristics, principles, and standards
which are practiced to gain efficient leaders. Rosabeth Moss Kanter, a business professor at
Harvard Business School has expressed how these four frames are effective by examples during her
interview.
Structural Leadership involves the leader possessing characteristics, such as, focusing on
implementation, can be powerful and stable, and emphasizes on shared goals. Kanter, concentrates
on strategy, innovation, and leadership for change (57). In addition, she shared her ideas with other
companies of how to implement change to their culture and structure (58). Through these changes,
these organizations would be able to execute the conventional ideas and move from unconventional

accomplishing. Human Resource Leadership tend to their subordinates and would like to maintain

Cause And Effect Essay On Stress
Effects of Stress Stress is a reaction to a situation when presented with a challenge, everyone
experiences stress at some point. Stress can lead to emotional, psychological and even physical
problems including heart disease, high blood pressure, chest pains or irregular heartbeats.
(Nahrendorf) While its effects vary the overall three main effects occur from stress being mental
instability, eating habits, and the body physically.
The most common effect of stress comes in the form of muscle pains or headaches. The reasoning
for this is because when the body is stressed, muscles tense up. It is a safety reaction done by the
body to shield itself from injury and pain. Eventually when stress fades the muscles will relax
and the feeling will pass, but due to the amount of time the muscles are in this state a side effect
is often headaches or even migraines. The respiratory system is also at risk during states of stress
causing breathing to become more intense. That is not an issue for most people, however those
with breathing disorders such as asthma or emphysema can pose a bigger problem. Additionally,
some cases of stress can lead to hyperventilation or a panic attack, which ties into the effects of the
cardiovascular system, mainly blood pressure. This mostly occurs through chronic stress or stress
over a longer period. Finally, during high periods of stress an excess of glucose, extra energy for
an emergency, known to most as fight or flight. All this extra blood

Halfway through every year we are expected to go on an excursion. This year s excursion was to
Mangalo Prison. Mangalo prison was famous in our town as people believed criminals left there
evil spirits behind in there, that and the fact it was nearly a hundred years old was the only
reason why it still existed. Finding a seat on the school bus was like a hierarchy, you know,
popular people at the back, nerds at the front and then there s the loser who sits next to the bus
driver. I didn t mind sitting next to the bus driver, I suppose after seven years you get to know
the guy. It was a lot easier to talk to Steve that trip because unlike the usual chaotic yelling,
everyone was listening to Jimmy Dunning s Mangalo Prison ghost stories. As much as I
disliked Jimmy and his strange desire to flush my head down toilets, his stories were actually
terrifying. The town of Mangalo was like those deserted towns you see in movies where the only

We were escorted through the jail by a rugged looking man who looked as though he once called
the place home. Once the tour was over we were free to explore and wonder the jail ourselves.

The Effects of Mental Health Resources on College Student Stress and Coping
Chapter 2: Literature Review
Introduction
Many young adults within the university and college educational system experience stress. The
stress and anxiety they incur can vary due to multiple factors. This chapter examined some of these
different factors and how they have contributed to undergraduate student stress and anxiety and
overall college experience. It also focused on the positive and negative coping mechanisms students
utilized in order to manage their stress and anxiety. Finally, it examined the mental health resources
available that have helped promote adaptive emotional management skills. By examining these
factors the reader will better understand the elements that could contribute to the student s ability to
thrive in their undergraduate experience.
Stress and Undergraduate Students Fear and Stress Contributing to Student Performance. Students
may experience academic difficulty due to a variety of factor. One particular factor students may
face regularly is fear. While growing up, fears are a common experience, however as an individual
gets older they eventually learn how to better manage their experience of fear (Bledsoe Baskin,
2014). Nevertheless, fear can still occasionally impact peoples cognitive abilities. Cognitive
functioning is a significant part of the undergraduate experience so any impairment of it can be
significant.

Due to these underlining evidences, the community has noticed an issue regarding the over

Symbolism In The Easter Uprising
The 1916 Easter Uprising symbolizes the first major act of force since the United Irishmen Rising
in 1798 . During the time of the Great Famine from 1845 to 1847 the majority of the Irish
population lost faith in the British government because they did not listen or take their grievances
seriously . The Irish immediately became second class citizens to the British . Germany during
World War One thought that England would be too occupied with the Irish to enter into WW1 . An
immediate cause of the war was the threat of the Northern Irelands to oppose domestic self
government known as Home Rule through a rebellion . Ulster s laws were enforced to prohibit
arms from being sent to Ireland. Germany believed that because of the large number of... Show

Essay on Philosophy of Christian Education
The education of children has existed since the beginning of time as parents have taught and
molded their children into the young adults they desired them to be. Initial training of children was
not in a formal setting, although history would see numerous settings, purposes, and
methodological changes. Philosophies of education have also changed through the years as various
voices have seemed to grasp the purpose of educating the next generation, thus laying out objectives
to reach those goals of teaching children. The statement philosophy of Christian education contains
much information to be unwrapped. The term philosophy literally means, in the Greek, love of
wisdom. In this case, the study of philosophy involves a critical... Show more content on

Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes
of your houses and on your gates (Deuteronomy 6:6 9). Christian education is not all about what
takes place in the formal classroom at school. As Christian educators, we are in a partnership with
moms and dads to help shape and disciple their children. It is the discipleship of children that
propels believing teachers to devote their life to this vital ministry of Christian education. When it
comes to the education of children, there are numerous fundamental factors, to mention a few:
parents, teachers, the student himself, curriculum, methodology, culture, and the Holy Spirit.
Students must first take responsibility for their own education and desire to learn. Even though this
key educational factor is not a prerequisite for learning, all students must eventually hunger for
learning or it will never take root in their lives. Responsible teachers must use responsible materials
and methodology in order for purposeful education to have a lasting impact. Teachers must use their
divine calling and materials that are not sugar coated, censored, vacuous and dry, nor merely
politically correct (Holtrop) to challenge this current generation of students. While secular
humanism views children as inherently good, we know that scripture teaches that all mankind to be

Blanche Dubois Delusions Essay
Dealing with the harsh truths of life can be tough for anyone to cope with which is why people
tell themselves lies. These lies are called life lies a falsehood people tell themselves to rationalize
the lifestyle they are living or actions they have committed. Tennessee Williams and Henrik Ibsen
investigate how life lies can turn into delusions a state of mind or way of life, when they are used
to cope with the stressors of everyday life. Williams protagonist, Blanche DuBois, was a former
southern belle forced to move in with her sister, Stella, after her husband s suicide and being
evicted from Belle Reve, her family home. To cope with these traumatic events, Blanche decided to
recreate her character. To do so, she lied to the people... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She [couldn t] stand a naked lightbulb in Stella s house because of the fear it would expose her
too blatantly to the very people from whom she tried to hide (Williams 60). Williams used the
word naked , instead of another synonym, to describe the vulnerable and delicate position
Blanche would be in if her lies are disclosed. She believed that if she hid herself physically, her
dark, internal self would thus be hidden. No one especially Stella, Stanley, and Mitch, the people
closest to her would be able to see through the barrier of lies she created to cope with the death of
her husband and her past which devastated her. She was forced to face her biggest fear when he

knew every part of her being, including her appearance and character, were utterly exposed to a
man whom she desired to appear to as wholesome. It was as if she was in pain when the light hit
her which was symbolic of how painful it would be if she came to terms with the truth. Blanche,
then, [covered] her face to keep herself from total indecency in front of Mitch and keep the most
vulnerable, valuable part of herself hidden and, therefore, wholesome. Williams used short, blunt

Capitalism Vs Industrial Capitalism
What is capitalism? According to the Merriam Webster dictionary capitalism is an economic
system characterized by private or corporate ownership of capital goods, by investments that are
determined by private decision, and by prices, production, and the distribution of goods that are
determined mainly by competition in a free market.
Transitioned from mercantile capitalism later expanded to joint stock companies moving into
industrial capitalism. Industrial capitalism was larger in scale and different in practice. Joyce
Appleby s definition of industrial capitalism: An economic system that relies on investment of
capital in machines and technology that are used to increase production of marketable goods.
In The Wealth of Nations, published in 1776. Smith advocated that the production of wealth would
increase if people were allowed to pursue their self interest, with little intrusion from government. In
serving their own interests, people would serve the public interest, unconsciously, as if guided, as
he said, by an unseen hand. Capitalism is built on self interest, it s a system of give me more and
can never inspire admiration. Today there seems to not be a better alternative to capitalism, but anti
market feelings persist. The current market system is more proficient at constructing wealth and
fulfilling desires than any other system currently known. Capitalism encompasses the legal,
political, economic and cultural systems all working together to create wealth

Design Proposal Report For Fatigue Monitoring System
Design Proposal Report for
Fatigue Monitoring System (FMS)
By Alvin Kuan, Sarah Fink, Shian Su and Suliman Altaleb
1. Abstract
This paper presents some background briefing, implantation, ethical responsibility, and action plan
of FMS design plan. FMS is a model purposely designed to detect and measure fatigue variables,
i.e., blinking rate, yawning rate and head tilt for fatigue predictions. In addition, FMS will
establish a crude estimate of fatigue and warns the user if a threshold has been exceeded. This
FMS will provide real time measurements of fatigue which, if integrated with good risk
management practice, will result in reduced and controlled recurrence of serious safety incidents.
The focus the project is to understand and appreciate the essential components in designing
successful and commercially viable device. This system employs non invasive electrodes which
are positioned specifically for each of blinking and yawning tests in order to attain
electrocardiogram signals accordingly. FMS is also able to detect head nodding patterns via a gyro
sensor specifically located to monitor axial coordination of head.
1. Background
Fatigue results in an impaired decision making and judgment, slowed reflexes and responses,
absent mindedness, memory lapses etc. Fatigue is often a root cause of major accidents. Fatigue
is believed to be the reason of more than 20% of road fatalities in Victoria Fatigue related accidents
are more likely to result in fatalities

Essay On Man Made And Natural Disaster
Man made and natural disasters are incidents that occur within our society. Research has indicated
these incidents have become more common internationally over the past several decades (Pan
American Health Organization, 2004). As a result, it is integral domestically to plan for, work to
prevent, and respond to incidents within our borders. These incidents have been shown to be
increasing in commonality due to increased levels and technology associated with transportation,
higher concentrations of humans in smaller areas, growth of chemical industries that increase
availability of explosive and/or toxic agents, and increased terrorist activity and armed conflicts
(Pan American Health Organization, 2004). In response to these increasing risks of man made and
natural disasters occurring within our borders, it is integral for our society to utilize an emergency
management system in order to prepare for, mitigate, and respond to these incidents. The Incident
Command System (ICS), which allows for coordination on every governmental level and among a
multitude of agencies, facilitates efficient communication between entities, and ensures a continuity
of command through a highly organized chain of command (Phoenix Police Department). ICS is
currently the main and most efficient and effective system throughout governmental and non
governmental agencies and entities within our borders. In response to the terror attacks at the turn
of the century and continuing threat of terror

Often times there is a man that really does like this lady, but because he doesn t have money he

Daisy would be just across the bay (Page78). Even with all his money Gatsby was still not happy
because he didn t have what he really wants which was Daisy. The reason he even got all this
money was in hopes to get Daisy to see all his money and make her come back to him. This didn
t go as planned because Daisy husband Tom would not let her go anywhere without him. So
Gatsby was left alone with all that money but no love. In this novel money doesn t equal happiness,
but love was truly the point of happiness. In another online article it says, None of these are bad but

How Did The Maginot Line Affect International Affairs
The Maginot Line during the period between World War I and World War II changed dramatically
and greatly affected international affairs. In this essay I will attempt to give a descriptive and
informative chronological outline of the creation on the Maginot Line, as well as the residual
effects of it and its outcome on international affairs.
The Maginot Line was named after the French Minister of War AndrГ© Maginot. It was a line of
obstacles, concrete fortifications, and weapon installations that France constructed on the French
side of its borders with Germany, Switzerland, and Luxembourg during the 1930s.
France had suffered damage to both men and building structures in World War I
. After Versailles in
1919, there was a clear intention on the part of the French that France should never have to
suffer such a catastrophe again. After 1920, French military favored adopting a military strategy
that would simply put a stop to any form of German invasion again. The responsibility of
drawing Europe s post World War II war borders fell primarily to the Paris Peace Conference of
1919 20. There the victorious countries positions of power drafted the Treaty of Versailleswith
Germany. On 28 June 1919, the peace treaty that ended World War I was signed by Germany and
the Allies at the Palace of Versailles near Paris, France. Allied demands were represented by the

thoughts about his interactions with nature. Many of the main concepts and foundations of modern
conservation, ecology and land ethic can be found in this book.He explains what it means to be a

The summary of Leopold s work is what should be admired, as Leopold was a pioneer in
changing the American view of the people s place in nature. One of my favorite quotes in the
book was: the modern dogma is comfort at any cost , which is saying that to get comfort, you
have to spend money. Another favorite quote was: is education possibly a process of trading
awareness for things of lesser worth? What I got out of this is that it s saying the true definition
of education and what school is. Leopold s views on the world are very good and they show
how much we don t think about the world and the land ethic. Also, it shows how all we care
about is comfort and convenience. His view of being out with nature is also good because our
world is filled with technology and many people forget about nature and how important it is to
us. The through line that I think defines him is Earth Keeper, his views of how technology and
people hurt nature and how we need to protect it. Nature is such a big part of our lives and we
need to take care of the earth.A topic I was challenged by is the whole aspect of is almost

The Man With The Twisted Lip By Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
The short story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, The Man with the Twisted Lip, is based on disguises
of wealth and appearance and how these disguises change the point of view that people have in
the social classes and what they think about each other during the Victorian Era. Disguises can
be used to create an identity for one s own personal gain or to protect an individual s identity.
Neville St. Claire uses disguise to validate his place as a gentleman. His status as a beggar allows
him to become the successful gentleman that he should be, by concealing his true self to the social
classsystem. Sherlock Holmes uses his persona as a protection to keep the people of London
safe and out of harms way. Between the two personalities of St. Claire and Holmes is the
outcome of what others may think of them; St. Claire knows the identity that he has created is
not accepted by the social class while Sherlock Holmes identity is seen as a hero and is accepted
by the social class. One uses his disguise purely for monetary gain and the other uses the identity
in order to solve mysteries and protect his city. As shown in the The Man with the Twisted Lip ,
disguise is only allowed when the social class accepts the identity. Despite the fact that St. Claire
and Holmes created new identities through disguise, St. Claire is shamed of his identity while
Holmes is respected. Both disguises have various goals. St. Claire hides behind the facade of a

why MS appears to be an autoimmune disease. MS is a chronic degenerative disease that usually
begins in young adulthood and destroys muscular control. Most people will live with MS for
many years after their diagnosis. MS reduces life expectancy by only about ten fifteen years, and
about half of the patients survive thirty years or more from onset. (Joy JE, Johnston RB, 2001)
Approximately eight five percent of MS patients begin with relapsing remitting disease, as in optic

Description Of The History Of Family Centered Services
Description of the history of family centered services Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the family
centered services generated preventable client assignment with no definite procedures for stability
(Mass Engler, 1959; Gruber, 1973 ;as cited by Pecora, Reed Ashcraft, Kirk). Furthermore, Gruber
(1973) established that the problem was rooted in insufficient data to make suitable decisions to

added that this resulted in one of many issues such as, familycentered services encouraging

The goals of child welfare services. In order to address these past mishaps, the following three

Tender Is Night Character Analysis
The Tragic Downfall of Promising Psychiatrist Dick Diver
The work of F. Scott Fitzgerald The Tender is Night shows us how a character having strong
qualities such as education and career may collapse in search of entering into a new world
which results in hamartia or a fatal flaw. It is the protagonist young American Doctor Dick Diver
s tragic downfall which attracts many critics attention on the work who is an educated
promising psychiatrist and traveling man that shuttles between Vienna and Zurich in the
pursuit of to be a good psychologist maybe to be the greatest one that ever lived (Fitzgerald 147).
It can be considered as an irony that as a talented psychiatrist Dick Diver who has a published
book A Psychology for Psychiatrists and has ambitious desire in finding out ways for the mental
illnesses Diver s himself ironically gets caught to a kind of mental illness that causes his
frustration. In this perspective, in the novel the protagonist Diver s trauma is considered in a
way as a good example for many psychiatrists who are in search of causes and solutions for
mental illnesses together with Nicole character in the novel. According to Bruccoli, the novel is a
new plot set in Europe about an American psychiatrist who is ruined by his marriage to a wealthy
mental patient (Bruccoli 330) while some critics consider the novel as breakdowns: breakdowns in
marriage, friendships, and individuals (Lucas 89). It has been argued that the title of Fitzgerald s
novel Tender Is the Nighthas taken it from the work of John Keats s Ode to A Nightingale.
According to William E. Doherty the novel Tender Is the Night also gets its essence from Keat s
work.
The title of the novel and the epigraph Fitzgerald offers illuminate the significance of night and
darkness in the story. An enquiry reveals a complicated and careful symbolic structure in Tender Is
the Night involving a contrast between the night and the day, darkness and light (6)
Although the novel is the last completed work of Fitzgerald one of the difficulties that the novel
presents is its ambiguity in understanding the chronological order of the work. While in the
masterpiece of Fitzgerald The Great Gatsby the protagonist Gatsby s downfall

The Importance Of Political Socialization
The main task of political socialization is to shape an individual s political orientation, attitudes,
and behaviors so that they fit into a particular political system (Lee Zhan, 1991). Existing
literature assumes one s most important political attitudes are shaped relatively early in life, and
that they remain stable in subsequent phases of life (Quintelier Hooghe, 2011). As political

However, these political socialization studies, most of which were conducted in North America

basic education, despite its enhanced presence at the college level in recent years, and do not
explain why China has not stressed political socialization at an early age. Moreover, due to China s
massification of higher education since the 2000s, the divide between basic education s and higher
education s approaches to political education has sharpened. Therefore, this study aims to determine
how the difference in how Marxist political economy is taught in basic and higher education in
China impacts university students political education learning. This article first reviews the
literature on political education in basic education and higher education in China, especially the
divide in approaches to Marxist ideology education, and describes the design and implementation of
the study. The major patterns of its findings are presented next, after which some possible
explanations for these patterns are proposed, specifically in terms of: the importance of political
education in the earlier stages of life; the role of formal and informal university political education
in shaping students positive attitudes toward Marxist political economy and informing their

The Role Of Self-Authorship In Revenge Of The Nerds
College is a time of transformation for students as they adapt to new environments and
expectations. It is also a time of increased freedom, where students learn more about themselves
and who they are as people. Baxter Magolda s Theory of Self authorship deals with the journey of
a person as they define themselves and move from external to internal definition. In the movie,
Revenge of the Nerds, many of the characters move through this journey of selfauthorship. In this
paper, we will focus on one of the characters in the movie, and show how he frees himself from the
constraints of external definition. We will begin with a brief summary of the movie, and then focus
on how Magolda s theory applies to the film.
Revenge of the Nerds is focuses on two best friends, Gilbert and Lewis, who are freshman at Adams
College. For the purpose of this paper, we will focus mostly on Gilbert and his path of ... Show

In this phase, individuals ground themselves in an internally defined belief system and gain a
deep understanding of themselves (Evans, et al., 2010). Along with this understanding comes
feelings of strength that emanate from a pride for who they are; they are aware of external
pressures, but do not give into them (Evans, et al., 2010). After defeating the jocks in the
competition, the nerd house was completely destroyed. Lewis wants to give up, but Gilbert is
infuriated and wants to keep fighting. He disregards external opposition and goes to the pep rally
to confront the jocks. He makes a speech declaring that he is a nerd and proud. It is clear at this
point in the movie that Gilbert has moved from trying to fit external expectations, to embracing an
internal form of self definition. He realizes who he is and embraces that identity, defending it
against opposition from the jocks. Thus, Gilbert completes Magolda s path of

SOF, by virtue of the value of SOF power to national security in the emerging security environment,

Dog Waste Essay
Dog waste is composed of water, fecal bacteria, nitrogen, phosphorus, and possibly worms.
Animal waste, such as cow manure, is very commonly used as fertilizer. This fact would usually
cause a person to assume that this meant dog waste would be good for the lawn. But the fact is
that dog waste does not have the positive fertilizereffect on plants that most people would think.
The waste in large amounts eventually produces the opposite of the intended effect, and it kills the
grass.
Fertilizer is a mixture of nutrients that plants need to live, and it is added to soil in gardens and on

If the parasites from the dog waste are just sitting on the grass as the poop decomposes, there is a
very likely chance that another pet or child will run through the poop, contracting the parasite.
The bacteria and parasites will also infect plants that are around the pile of waste, and they will
die or become very unhealthy. They also claim that there are 23 million fecal coliform bacteria
in one gram of dog waste and that one pile of dog waste can take a year or more to fully
breakdown. It is proven that dog waste is harmful to humans and animals, but animals like worms
and bees are needed to keep plants healthy and alive. If the poop has a harmful substance, it may
not only affect the human but also kill of the animals that help plants. This causes plants to slowly
die off. Using dog waste for fertilizer seems like it would have the same effect as using cow manure
, but it does not. The dog waste slowly releases nitrogen. It negatively affects human health with
parasites and bacteria. Helpful animals are hurt and killed because of the bacteria. A normal
fertilizer is balanced with three different nutrients that help plants grow and be healthy. Ultimately,
a normal and balanced fertilizer will have a more positive effect on a lawn compared to unbalanced

A Proposal to Ban Smoking in Public Areas Essay
A Proposal to Ban Smoking in Public Areas
Every year, there are over 400,000 smoking related deaths in the United States. A large percentage
of these are due to lung cancer, whose leading cause is smoking. However, not all deaths are
smokers themselves. Anyone in the vicinity can fall victim to second hand smoke. These people,
through no action of their own, can have their lives threatened.
This problem, which plagues all Americans, should have action taken on a local scale to help
protect the health of the public. The Ames City Council is in the process of debating a city
ordanince which whould ban smoking in all public places, with the exception of those designated
as smokng areas . A public place shall be defined by Subsection... Show more content on

Keep in mind, these people don?t smoke themselves, but they are still put at risk by the actions
of others. The Saskatchewan Instite?s webpage goes on to state that half of all children exposed
to second hand smoke are exposed at home. While this is an important fact, its importance lies in
opposite, half are exposed in places other than at home. In America 25,000 people are killed every
year in car accidents, while 53,000 die from second hand smoke (from Office on Smoking and
Health, Center for Disease Control and Prevention, http://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/sgr/sgr_1988/).
Action must be taken to protect these people from a threat over which they have no control.
In addition to statistics, a situation to illustrate the necessity for this proposal can be considered.
Imagine a family, Mom, Dad, and their three children, are going out to eat in a nice restaurant for
Mom?s birthday. When the waitress asks if they?d like smoking or non smoking, they Dad requests
non, because he is concerned about his family?s health. However, the truth about this decision is
that in reality, just being in the restaurant increases the threats to their family.
Those who are opposed to this ban contend that it will hurt economic prosperity of their bars/taverns
/clubs/restaurents, which are the areas that would be most effected by this ordanence. However,
according to a recent study conducted by the Substance Abuse Policy Research Program in New
York, this is not the case. Quite the

Summary Of Owen Meany s The Foul Ball
1.Chapter 1: The Foul Ball Owen was so tiny, we loved to pick him up; in truth, we [the boys at

weighted. This was also incongruous because Owen came from a family in the granite business.
[...] But the only the aura of the granite quarry that clung to Owen was the granular dust [...] He
was the color of a gravestone; light was absorbed and reflected by his skin, as with a pearl, so that
he appeared translucent at times (4 5). In the beginning of the novel, Owen Meany evidently
demonstrates transcendent and spiritual qualities, which include his physical weightlessness and
peculiar yet stentorian voice. Ironically, in contrast to his small stature, Owen Meany works in the

parallels with Jesus redemption of humanity in an unworthy world. Headmaster Randy White, the

Why Is Lewis Murdered
LEWIS S DEATH ESSAY (Due 3.28.18) Meriwether Lewis is an American explorer who is
known for his role as the leader in the Lewis and Clark expedition. He was also the governor of
the Louisiana Territory. He was also Jefferson s private secretary, these two were close friends.
Since Jefferson trusted Lewis, he let Lewis travel to D.C to deliver Jefferson s classified
information. During Lewis s travel to Washington, he visited Robert Grinder s Inn to rest,
however, while he was there he died. Lewis s death was a murder and not a suicide; Nevertheless,

Looking back at the physical evidence there were two gunshot wounds. If you go back to the
ballistic test, the gun that was used took some parts of the structure s head. If he shot himself
with the gun that was similar to the horse pistol, that would ve been enough for him to die. It
seems unlikely for him to be able to shoot himself once with that gun, proceed to reload the gun
and shoot himself once more. He would ve been dead after one shot and would not be able to
shoot himself again with that kind of gun. The evidence from Priscilla Grinder, it was pretty off
and suspicious. Every letter was different along with the situation. Her story consistently
changed and inconsistent. Then there was Russel s letter. The letter Major Russel wrote to
Jefferson saying that Lewis was in a deranged state of mind and that he tried to commit suicide
twice, however, this handwritten analysis wasn t written by him. This was a forged document
and it showed that Jefferson was duked. It was possibly forged by Neely or Wilkinson to
incriminate Lewis s Suicide . This evidence shows that Lewis s death is a murder and not a suicide.

How Did St Augustine Religion Influence Teens
When you think about Augustine s confession, you think about the new generation. In other words,
the conversion that happened over a thousand years ago can be closely related to teenagers of the
21st century. Before Christianity was developed, a lot of people, especially the Roman emperors
could not accept it. They condemned and harassed the Christians who would claim their faith.
When Christianitywas finally accepted, there were still people who contradict with the Christian
faith.
Teenagers today find it difficult to come to God, they do not take a straight path. This is similar to
what St Augustine did, teenagers of today try to find meaning in life by being experimental with
different religions or cults. Augustine experimented with the Manicheans, a Persian dualist cult that
believed in two competing gods. The only difference between teenagers of today and Augustine is
that teenagers of today do not go to extreme as St Augustine did rather, they experiment with some
of the main religions. Augustine later saw through the Persian dualist cult and abandoned it. His

The inclusion of hyperactivity is what makes the difference between a diagnosis of ADD or ADHD. With children between the ages of 6 and 12 being the most commonly diagnosed ages, it has also been known to continue as they get older. With school aged children being affected the most, it can become severely difficult for the student and teacher to work out a solution. Sure, the children can be given the commonly prescribed medications, but they don t get excluded from possible dependency or addiction. When it comes to prescribing medications for ADHD, physicians are more apt to stick to the type that they know will work and these are Adderall and Ritalin. As the ancient philosopher Heraclitus of Ephesus articulated with a brilliant and memorable statement on the river of flux that life is like a river: We both step and do not step in the same rivers. We are and are not (B49a). What Heraclitus points out for those who are unfamiliar with this school of thought is, that the natural state of life is change where everything including ourselves is constantly shifting, changing, and becoming something other to what it was before. This theory that life is like a river is useful because it sheds light on a human challenge to accept change. According ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One decade ago I could have never imagined the benefits and possibilities of this industry; however, I m glad that I went with the flow of change by stepping into the river of flux. It was never easier to stay connected with my family and friends overseas. To let them be part of my life but also to take part in theirs at any time. Sharing a generational identity will result in common workplace expectations, and when these expectations are not met employers are met with dissatisfaction, lack of commitment and the intention of quitting (Joshi et al. 2011). The young have been picked on for decades as the lazy generation (Thomson, M., 1945) This is not generationally bound, but the traits which are picked on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Cause And Effect Essay On Stress Effects of Stress Stress is a reaction to a situation when presented with a challenge, everyone experiences stress at some point. Stress can lead to emotional, psychological and even physical problems including heart disease, high blood pressure, chest pains or irregular heartbeats. (Nahrendorf) While its effects vary the overall three main effects occur from stress being mental instability, eating habits, and the body physically. The most common effect of stress comes in the form of muscle pains or headaches. The reasoning for this is because when the body is stressed, muscles tense up. It is a safety reaction done by the body to shield itself from injury and pain. Eventually when stress fades the muscles will relax and the feeling will pass, but due to the amount of time the muscles are in this state a side effect is often headaches or even migraines. The respiratory system is also at risk during states of stress causing breathing to become more intense. That is not an issue for most people, however those with breathing disorders such as asthma or emphysema can pose a bigger problem. Additionally, some cases of stress can lead to hyperventilation or a panic attack, which ties into the effects of the cardiovascular system, mainly blood pressure. This mostly occurs through chronic stress or stress over a longer period. Finally, during high periods of stress an excess of glucose, extra energy for an emergency, known to most as fight or flight. The Man With The Twisted Lip By Sir Arthur Conan Doyle The short story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, The Man with the Twisted Lip, is based on disguises of wealth and appearance and how these disguises change the point of view that people have in the social classes and what they think about each other during the Victorian Era. Disguises can be used to create an identity for one s own personal gain or to protect an individual s identity. Neville St. Claire uses disguise to validate his place as a gentleman. His status as a beggar allows him to become the successful gentleman that he should be, by concealing his true self to the social classsystem. Sherlock Holmes uses his persona as a protection to keep the people of London safe and out of harms way. Between the two personalities of St. Claire and Holmes is the outcome of what others may think of them; St. Claire knows the identity that he has created is not accepted by the social class while Sherlock Holmes identity is seen as a hero and is accepted by the social class. One uses his disguise purely for monetary gain and the other uses the identity in order to solve mysteries and protect his city. As shown in the The Man with the Twisted Lip , disguise is only allowed when the social class accepts the identity. Despite the fact that St. Claire and Holmes created new identities through disguise, St. Claire is shamed of his identity while Holmes is respected. Both disguises have various goals.
