When children are young and they travel to their grandparents or friends house a
long list of fun activities begin to emerge. Kids love to have fun and it makes no

steels that yield different properties which can be tailored to meet different
engineering applications. In this experiment, the hardness of 3 steel alloys with
varying Carbon compositions will be compared. With different amounts of Pearlite
formed, we can also estimate the hardness of pure pearlite and ferrite. Lastly, the
fourth sample will be quenched in water and a Martensitic structure will be observed.
We will discuss the attributes that allows Martensite to be one of the hardest steel
alloy available.
1. Introduction
There are many different forms of steel alloys used today. They are tailored during
their processing phases to meet the wide array of engineering applications. Steel
alloy in its simplest form is a basic mixture of Iron and Carbon and by varying the
carbon content, the rate of cooling and the addition of impurities like Chromium
for high corrosion resistance, we are able to derive alloys of different mechanical
properties such as stainless steel and tool steels as these 3 factors affect the
microstructure of the steel. This can be understood by the simple phase diagram of
