Examining The Place Of The Russian Minority
Examining the Place of the Russian Minority in Latvia: Aliens, non citizens or stateless persons?
Introduction
The region of Latvia has a long history of occupation by foreign powers and so its ethnicity is quite
varied. The Latvian Republic is one of the Baltic States located on the coast of the Baltic Sea. Along
with its neighbours Lithuania and Estonia, Latvia gained independence from the Soviet Union in
1991. It is when Latvia gained its status as an independent state that the most crucial period for the
Russian speaking residents began, as at that time the country s main issue was the status of its 1.1
million Russian speaking residents. Under Latvia s 2000 census (Heleniak, 2006), 30 per cent of the
country s 2.4 million population ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The year independence was restored was defining for many thousands of Russians permanently living
in Latvia. On 3rd March 1991 a nonbinding advisory referendum took place with the result that 73%
of all Latvian residents supported the notion for independent Latvia (Troitsky, 2011). The Popular
Front of Latvia, the national movement which was promoting the idea of segregation, advocated that
all permanent residents will be entitled to and qualified for Latvian citizenship (Melvin, 1995, p. 34).
All those who want to be citizens of Latvia can be (Lieven, 1997, p. 304) stated Anatolijs Gorbunovs,
Chairman of the Latvian Supreme Council. However, the universal citizenship for all permanent
residents was not adopted. Latvia restored the rights and status only for those persons who were
identified as citizens under the 1919 Law together with their descendants (Aleinikoff Klusmeyer,
2001, p. 31). Thereby, for the majority of ethnic non Latvians citizenship was not granted, even when
the biggest portion of them were born in Latvia. This was seen as an attempt to suppress national
extinction (Mole, 2012, p. 89 90) caused by, according to the radicals in Latvia, the Russian people.
Those people became non citizens not holding citizenship to any other country and without the right to
vote. In Latvia as well as in Estonia the Russian population is seen as a reminder of their unhappy past
(Best, 2013, p. 34), thus the Russian people are not welcomed

Oprah Winfrey Golden Media Rhetorical Analysis
Should celebrities use their spotlights to speak their minds about politics and current world issues?
Some argue that celebrities are only here to entertain and should not ruin that by voicing their political
opinions. Mark Wahlberg for example, stated in an interview with Task and Purpose that celebrities
should stay out of politics as they are in their own little bubble and have no way of truly understanding
the struggles of average people. On the other hand, some celebrities have the exact opposite opinion.
In her Golden Globes acceptance speech, Oprah Winfrey denounces silence and encourages everyone
to stand up for what is right no matter what their social standing is. To explore this idea, we will use
the rhetorical analysis theory ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And I m especially proud and inspired by all the women who have felt strong enough and empowered
enough to speak up and share their personal stories. In this speech, the #MeToo movement is
referenced, a movement that swept the internet in 2017, continuing into 2018. On the website for this
movement, it is told that this movement was founded in 2006 by Tarana Burke as a movement to
spread awareness of sexual harassment and assault, empowering women to use #MeToo if they have
experienced either in their lives. Also referenced was the Time s Up movement, a similar movement
that was specifically made for women in the entertainment industry who have been taken advantage of
by men who are above them in the business, men who abuse their power at the expense of women.
Very recently there was a movement of women in Hollywood publicly accusing their attackers,
unmasking many individuals and revealing who they really are. One of the most notable cases, as well
as one of the first, was the women who accused producer Harvey Weinstein. This case not only being
notable because of Weinstein s position in Hollywood as one of the top producers in the business, but
also because of the quantity of women who stood up to accuse him. USA Today lists 84 women who
accused Harvey Weinstein of various forms of sexual assault and harassment late last

Collage Discovery
When I was seven years old I made a huge discovery about science. I realized that everything that
surrounds me; the tree in my yard, the house that I live in, and the chair that I am sitting in right now
are made of the same exact materials that I am made of! I made this discovery whilst I was discussing
science with my dad. Earlier that day, at school we had been talking about molecules and how they
were made of atoms. My dad often likes to extend my understanding of subjects which I study at
school, which is what he was doing that day. Since we had discussed atoms and molecules in school
my dad had decided to go a little further with me, and talk about what atoms were made of. This led us
to the subject of protons, neutrons and electrons. Over the course of the next few days he taught me
the basics of what I have now come ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When the bell rang, signifying school had ended I ran through the hallways, weaving in and out of
people who were exiting their classrooms. I rushed over to my locker, put in the combination, grabbed
my backpack, and sprinted outside. My dad was there, waiting in the parking lot to pick me up, like he
did everyday. I rushed over to him and asked him when we could talk, Later, be patient he replied. I
opened the car door, and jumped in, closing the door after myself. My dad got into the car, and we
started on the short drive home. The whole ride I was bouncing up and down in my seat in
anticipation. When I finally got home, my dad gave in to me and said we could talk about string
theory. We sat down and he explained string theory to me. He then explained how strings could be
what protons, neutrons and electrons. This is about when I made the connection that if atoms make up
everything in this world and strings make up atoms, then I too am made of strings! In other words, I
am made up of the same things that a chair is made up of, simply vibrating at a different

Examples Of Conspiracy In Angels And Demons
The title of this project, conspiracy, is taken from Dan Brown s novel Angles and Demons. The story
of the novel is shown to be a result of the conspiracy formed by a member of the Church society. In a
dictionary, the word conspiracy is defined as the act of secretly planning to do something that is
harmful or illegal . However, this is not it. Conspiracy is formed to achieve goals which are made not
by the people, but by their greed for power, wealth and respect. In Angels and Demons, power is
shown to be the main reason for the formation of conspiracy. Dan Brown has successfully highlighted
in his book the kinds of people who form conspiracies. One can see that the people who are apparently
the most trustworthy, respectful and who happen to have a chance in attaining power are the ones who
secretly make plans to harm those who stand in their way of achieving success . In this novel, such
person is shown to be Carlo Ventresca, who is the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
All we need to do is be alert. We need to be aware of our own interests, our own attraction towards
things that may look beneficial to us but might end up destroying us as well as others around us.
Politicizing is interesting, undoubtedly. But is it good? Is it worth our time and hard work? For all we
know, our basic needs are to be happy and enjoy our lives. We might get happiness on some others
sorrows. But that happiness has a price. It costs us an entire worry free life. Each and every day, we
might end up getting worried of being accused of a crime that we know we have committed. This is
what happens when we conspire and get involved into politics. And this is what we need to beware of.
We must reflect on the consequences of our actions and decisions that others will face, and even more,
what we will ourselves face one day. Conspiracy is like a drug. It is highly addictive. But it is a
harmful drug. One enjoys it thoroughly, but the aftereffects are

Jfk Inaugural Address Analysis
On January 20, 1961, John Fitzgerald Kennedy gave his inaugural address in front of thousands of
anticipating Americans. Fear and uncertainty was imbedded in the minds of all Americans as the Cold
War neared its climax. The United States were also struggling with racial tensions and social
inequalities, leading into the presidential election of 1961. With severe consideration for the ongoing
national and international turmoil, President Kennedy sought to invoke a sense of unity in the
American people. Furthermore, Kennedy=s inaugural address uses pathos to flatter and influence the
emotions of the people, without distracting from the truth and evidence expected from a national
leader.
Trustworthiness is frequently argued to be one of the most admirable qualities that a president can

Moreover, President Kennedy throughout his speech gives the people a sense of power. He says, ALet

Essay On Spanking
Parents have the privilege and responsibility of shaping their child s behavior in a positive direction.
To help teach children to be responsible and less destructive, most parents use spanking as a way to
correct the child. Parents who oppose spanking suppose that spankings can lead to physical abuse.
Many parents believe that they should not discipline their children by spanking; however, spanking for
disciplinary measure is a necessary teachable moment for children.
Corporal punishment is using physical pain in response to behavior that has been deemed
inappropriate. The AAP defines spanking as striking a child with an open hand on the buttocks or
extremities with the intention of modifying behavior without causing physical injury (Jones ... Show

They will accept their punishment and comply in a short amount of time ( 10 Prevailing Pros... 1 2). A
child will respect authority when they know every wrongdoing gets some kind of physical
consequence, and the child will not repeat bad behaviors by reinforcement (1). A mother remembers
fearing the paddle, which she says is a good thing. When the crime meets the punishment, she feels
that there would be fewer bad children if more parents did spank. In one year, ninety four percent of
three and four year olds have been spanked. Seventy four percent of mothers think spanking is alright
for kids one to three (O Callaghan 1). Compared to non parents, parents view physical punishment as
more common than people without children (Marcus 2 3). Majority of the population thinks that
spanking is barbaric basing it off of abuses rather than the biblical model. Many parents who think
that way have problems at home including conflicts all the time, loss of control, and no way to fix the
problems. Since opposers buy into the stereotypical model of spanking where out of control parents
and religious extremists beat children instead of disciplining them, they reject the entire idea. Because
parents do not know how to spank, they think spanking should not be done at all (Ingram 3), but The
Bible never implies that the rod of discipline should be violent

Botanical Gardens, Research Paper on California Plants
California is a state of enormous diversity. From the coast to the mountains and the forests to the
deserts, California is full of a wide array of plant life. California is the third largest state in the United
States and thus has a major variation in climate resulting in the many plants found. Not only are there
many plants found here, but many of those plants cannot be found anywhere else. There are also many
nonnative plants that have become a part of the scenery in California. The best way to understand the
state s vegetation is to first understand the floristic provinces.
In North America there are 12 floristic provinces with four of those found in California (Map #1).

Most chaparral plants grow mainly in the spring. They take advantage of the winter rains penetrating
to their roots and the long spring days. To cope for the dry soil in the summer plants these plants
usually cope by becoming dormant. During this time they are very susceptible to fire. The evergreen
nature of this plant allows it to keep its leaves and not use and energy to create new leaves. Because of
this they can be photosynthesizing within minutes of a summer rain. These plants have adapted to use
very little water and not lose any while at the same time trapping all the water it can. The types of oak

These are all found in the oak woodlands biome. These trees are found all throughout of California.

summer Mediterranean. Generally the climates are cooler and moister then the grassland and chaparral

The Reason For Popularity Of Online Shopping
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: This research project was carried out to identify the reason for popularity
of online shopping, to describe why eBay and Amazon became successful without having a High
Street store, to compare eBay and Amazon in terms of revenues and customer s opinions and to
develop ideas on how they could improve their performance in future. This research draws the
attention to facts that despite both companies have many bad reviews, potential consumers are still
attracted to shop using their websites, while present customers are consciously complaining about
eBay s and Amazon s unprofessional customer service and after sale service, yet they still shop using
both websites, resulting in eBay overcoming analysts predictions about their profits every quarter and
Amazon investing big amounts of money in its growth. Primary research that was conducted, showed
that lower prices and wider range of products are the two main factors that attract consumers to shop
online (despite the awareness of bad customer service and after sale service). This project also finds
that prospects of eBay financial position are positive, however Amazon is not doing well. Amazon is
not able to prove that it can generate steady profits and Jeff Bezos is constantly re investing its
revenues for future growth which results in shareholders losing their patience. Recommendations
discussed include:  Improving the quality of customer service and after sale service for eBay and
Amazon  Decreasing

Some Theorists Believe Cinema Must Be Realistic And May
Some theorists believe cinema must be realistic and may only be seen as art if it remains in its original
form a static image on film stock. Others, however, argue that cinema is an important and relevant art
medium no matter its form. Digital cinema, while making use of new and different technologies such
as animation, is the next step in the evolution of film. Contrary to what certain theorists believe, it is
the most efficient and most artistically inclined way to create films as it offers a world of possibilities.
This is elaborated on in Digital Cinema and the History of a Moving Image, an excerpt from What Is
Cinema? the sixth chapter of The Language of New Cinema, a book penned by Lev Manovich.
Indeed, the author describes how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This mobility was acquired thanks to pre cinematic creations such as the Zootrope. What followed
was the debut of cinema as a moving image on film stock. This prompted documentary style short
films, such as L Arrivée d un train en gare à la Ciotat by Auguste and Louis Lumière, as well as, later
on, fictional feature films, like Charlie Chaplin s Modern Times. However, by mid 2011, 50 per cent
of the more than 39,500 North American screens had become digital. [And, in] the United States, the
major distributors have announced that they will cease to distribute films on 35mm film by the end of
2013. Thus, certain directors such as James Cameron and George Lucas are advocates for fully
digitally shot films. As a matter of fact, in 1984, George Lucas developed EditDroid and SoundDroid,
computerized, electronic non linear editing systems for image and sound. Furthermore, cinema has
evolved in terms of animation as well. In fact, the types of animation that are currently in use are so
entirely different than the kinds filmmakers had to use in the past. For example, while Meliès was
required to hand paint each and every single one of his film s frames for Le Voyage dans la Lune,
James Cameron s Avatar was able to make use of digital technologies in order to make the film 3D as
well as to turn human actors into the aliens featured in the film. Nevertheless, this new technological
development

Chaplin And Hitler
In the second decade of the twentieth century, a man named Charlie Chaplin achieved world fame
through cinema. He did so even before the cinema had come of age. Chaplin s contribution to the
development of cinema was nothing short of enormous. The time in which Chaplin s career was
flourishing, was also a time when the world was experiencing many problems. Chaplin s personal
beliefs, in combination with the events happening in the world at the time, were a driving force in
what message one of his later films carried.
Many historians note the similarity of Chaplin to Hitler. One of the most apparent facts is that they
were both born within four days of each other in the year 1889. Furthermore, the two men bore ...

He was no longer The tramp in films. A real job and a social standing, as a Jewish barber, had replaced
his comical mannerisms and out of touch approach to life. His decision to do the film made sense for
the time, seeing as he had a great disdain for the German government. It also would not be an
overstatement to say that Chaplin harbored a small grudge against the German regime.
The film progresses steadily to its controversial anti Nazi climax. Charlie the barber is mistaken for
the dictator (Hynkel) and is marched to the podium by his supporters to deliver a speech to the

Main Themes In The Hobbit By J. J. R. Tolkien
Theme Essay This paper is about the theme of the book, The Hobbit by: J. R. R. Tolkien. There will be
3 main topics to describe the theme of this book. The first main point is the fact that Bilbo Baggins,
who is the main character of the book, is sheltered until Gandalf, a wizard, and his dwarf friends invite
Bilbo on an adventure. The second point, is when Bilbo starts to find his true braveness. He does some
things that bring out and show off how he can be brave and he s not just a cowardly Hobbit. Finally,
the last main point is how Bilbo is wise and trusted among his fellow wizard, and dwarves. In the

tell from Bilbo s actions that he is getting more and more brave. He does not start to freak out like he
used to when something went wrong but he calms down and breaks down the situation. His excelling
bravery is in turn moving the story due to him being able to adventure just like a dwarf.Bilbo is
getting used to doing some daring things. He pick pocketed a big, scary, hungry troll even though it
could have easily killed him.Bilbo is starting to gain a good reputation among his friends due to his
bravery. Because Bilbo has shown that he can do things other Hobbits can not, he has gained trust and
wisdom from his friendsA example of this wisdom coming into play was when Bilbo and Gollum
were having a riddle battle, and Bilbo ended up tricking Gollum on this on riddle, what have I got in
my pocket! Bilbo ended up winning this battle and did not get eaten(71). Also, Bilbo ends up getting

Pride And Prejudice And The Pursuit Of Happiness Summary
Claudia Johnson critical article response
Claudia Johnson in her essay, Pride and Prejudice and the Pursuit of Happiness, claims that happiness
is the centralized theme of the novel, Pride and Prejudice. Johnson suggests that the element of
happiness carries the weight of political and social commentary, a comment preceded by a litany of
examples. One example being Darcy s struggle to find happiness in his independent choice of
marrying Elizabeth while combating his sense of self consequence [that] is characterized by a haughty
determination to be mortified by everyone outside his small circle (349). Johnson also defends Austen
from critics who claim the novel supports a fairytale style happy ending that doesn t resolve the
political or social issues brought about in the novel s opening pages. Johnson combats this criticism by
stating the political resolution can be found not within the novel s closing pages, but within the actions
of the characters. Johnson goes further to state that Austen s care to establish the standards of her
characters happiness provides us with index of their moral imaginations, tempers, and resources that
enable us to engage in judicious moral evaluation without resorting to the conclusive moralizing
characteristics of some of her contemporaries (350).
Johnson evaluates that each character serves a role not only in the narrative, but more importantly as
manifestations of Austen s own social commentary of her era and social/political

The Gaze In George Orwell s Nineteen Eighty-Four
Empowerment and disempowerment using the gaze is manifested as one of the fundamental themes in
George Orwell s novel Nineteen Eighty Four (1949). Written in 1944, Nineteen Eighty Four is a novel
which portrays the experiences of Winston Smith, the protagonist and other significant characters such
as Julia who are bound to live within a totalitarian regime in which the powerful forces are
manipulation and fear. The work of literature demonstrates the visionary concept of how totalitarian
regimes may evolve if they were permitted to do so. The power of the gaze is investigated in Nineteen
Eighty Four to assess how the protagonists in the book are given power and also disempowered by the
supervising gaze, the desiring gaze and the egalitarian gaze. Hence, formulating the following
research question: How does the notion of the gaze, give power to and disempower the protagonists in

The influence of the gaze is embodied in unique ways within the totalitarian regime with an objective

a totalitarian society.

Waucoba Wash Quadrangle
Geologic History of Waucoba Wash Quadrangle, California
The Waucoba Wash Quadrangle, California cross section begins with the deposition of the Cambrian
layers such as the Campito Formation, Poleta Formation (upper and middle members and undivided),
Harkless Formation, Saline Valley Formation (lower and upper members), Mule Spring Limestone,
Monola Formation (lower and upper members), and the Bonanaza King dolomite (dominantly
limestone and undivided). These Cambrian rocks are followed by rock layers from the Devonian
period, thus meaning that an unconformity occurred between the layers. The Devonian dolomite rock
layers include the Hidden Valley dolomite and the Lost Burro Formation (cherty dolomite). These are
followed by the Mississippian ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the major things noticeable from the cross section is that quite a few of the rock layers are over
turned, where the older rock layers are above the newer rock layers. This is seen in the contact
between the Quartz Monzonite of Papoose Flat and the Campito Formation which is also a
disconformity. Next there is some fault zones separating the Camptio, Poleta, and Harkless
formations. We then see some more overturned layers with the contacts between Saline Spring Valley
Formation (lower and upper members) above the Mule Spring Formation along with some inferred
folding. With a normal fault separating the inferred folding event, we see where the overturning
occurs. In between the Cambrian layers we see Tertiary Basalt nonconformities also being folded, thus
with that we know that the folding event was more recent than the formation of the Basalt. Next there
is a large Basalt field with a spot of the Harkless formation. Again we see over tuning as the Basalt
field ends there are the Devonian and Mississippian rock Layers on top of the basalt. Separating these
overturned layers from the Harkless Formation and the Saline valley Formation (upper member),
which are not overturned, is a thrust fault. From this information, there was a major stress event
sometime after the Tertiary period causing the rock layers to fold and overturn. And from this stress
event and from the folding, normal and thrust faults are formed. Finally we see that there were alluvial
and landslide deposits from the Quaternary after the folding, faulting, and over

1902 in the Salinas Valley, California. After growing up in Connecticut alongside his brother Charles

He vows to be a better man than his father and feels the rolling valleys of California calling him. One
night, Cathy Ames crawls onto the doorstep of Adam and Charles home after her boyfriend attempted
to kill her. Adam cares for Cathy and soon falls in love with the woman she portrays herself to be. He

Rejection is first present in Cyrus Trask s raising of his two sons, Adam and Charles. Cyrus utilizes a

at the rigorous trainings, while Adam struggles and begins to develop a hatred for his father. As Cyrus
pushes Adam harder, a favoring of one son over the other is apparent. Cyrus favors Adam because he
feels he is the stronger and better son, I love you better. I always have...Else why would I have given
myself the trouble of hurting you? (Steinbeck 28). Charles feels rejected and works to gain his father s

that Charles develops a sensitive and violent personality, Rage came first and then a coldness, a
possession; noncommittal eyes and a pleased smile and no voice at all, only a whisper. When that
happened murder was on the way (30). Charles violence and anger are a failing effort to fight for love,
which in return only makes him a broken man. Cathy Ames is an example of how rejection by one

manipulate others. People were drawn to her out of curiosity so in return she lures them in and then

Human Intelligence And Artificial Intelligence
More than often, we encounter the idea of computers becoming smarter and surpassing the human
brain; opinions like these are accepted by the general public and are perceived skeptical by scientists,
psychologists, and philosophers alike. The concern is not between machine and brain, but whether
human ingenuity is as exceptional as or better than nature itself. The human being, a natural part of the
world, has evolved from lower organisms to much higher, complex creatures; eventually the
evolutionary process occurred because we were able to interact with our environment and being
shaped by it physically and mentally, as this interaction was at an all time high, we came up with
intelligence. Intelligence has fascinated man since the dawn of time, and lead man to create one of the
greatest innovations that rivaled human intelligence: artificial intelligence. The competition between
human intelligence and artificial intelligence ultimately leads to the battle of nature and science.
Eventually these two forms of intelligence, human and artificial, must coincide and it must be
understood how each would interact with one another and be utilized. The latest technology
incorporates some sort of artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence (AI) is the intelligence exhibited
by machines or software (). All types of machines and software contain some sort of artificial
intelligence, even the simplest ones. AI is a system that perceives its surrounding environment and
takes actions

Why Secondary Schools Should Not Have Recess
Secondary schools should not have recess. There are many reasons why secondary schools should not
have recess. Teachers don t have enough time to teach their kids if there is recess. Kids also need more
time to learn things. If there is recess then they don t have enough time to learn those things that they
need to know. The reason that recess should not be banned because the teachers don t have enough
time to teach their class every thing that they need to teach. In the text it says, He says other teachers
tell him the recesses make it harder to keep regular lessons on schedule. The quote tells us why
secondary schools shouldn t have recess by telling us how much harder it is for teachers to keep a
regular schedule.

Archetypes In The Book Thief
the Odd One Out In 1939
Lots of children of Communists and Jews are given up during World War II, mainly because it would
be safer to live away from Germany and other countries that have been invaded. In the novel, The
Book Thief, Liesel and Werner the children of communist parents are left by their own mother and
taken in by the Hubermann family. On the way to Munich, Germany, Liesel s brother dies. As a result,
the scared 8 year old is left with two strangers, a compassionate foster father and a repetitively
swearing foster mother that shows her love alternatively. Markus Zusak uses symbolism and the
mentor pupil archetype to show how the power of words can be used for good, to combat evil. Hans
and Liesel s relationship is one that allows ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Every night, she wakes up from the first interaction with death, and sees Hans sitting in a chair instead
of the empty bed, reinforcing that she s not alone, Shhh, I m here, it s all right (Zusak 36). As a result
of being abandoned by her biological family, Liesel discovers comfort by having someone care for
her. Soon after, this becomes a routine but one night is different Liesel s nightmare is the same, she
relieves the night of her brother s death. The girl who woke up in the middle of the night wet her bed,
her papa holds her until he too, notices the smell coming from under the sheets which causes him to
change her sheets and he finds a book that she picks up during her brother s funeral. Hans, the kind
person he is, asked if Liesel who had recently wet her bed, wants to read the book. She replies yes,
after that night Liesel learns how to read. This event symbolizes Hans letting Liesel grieve over her
brother, instead of sitting into the empty bed that is originally for Werner, he sits in a chair and
watches over her. Since the young girl and her foster father are extremely close, they both teach each
other ways of rebelling. Hans is teaching Liesel to read, she continuously practices reading, the book

books. During this time in Germany, the Nazi s burn many books Jewish authors write. Hitler
prohibits any reading of books other than the the Mein Kampf. As a result of the constant book
burnings, most books are exceptionally hard to find or buy. Thus Liesel is very careful when she finds
a book on the street. The consistent desire to read leads her to rebel in ways that will eventually
destroy her family. Meanwhile, Liesel encourages Hans to remember his past and be truthful about the
promises he made in the moments of crisis. Such as, promising a widow a shelter for her child. As a

Tommy John Surgery
Baseball players and fans call it Tommy John surgery, after the pitcher who was the first to have the
surgery 29 years ago. By any designation, it is one of the major advancements in sports medicine in
the last quarter century. Technically it is a ulnar collateral ligament replacements procedure. Pitching
overhand is a particularly stressful motion; the strain it puts on a player s joint is commonly injurious.
Pitchers such as Kerry Wood, Matt Morris, John Smoltz, Mariano Rivera, Tom Gordon, and Eric
Gagne all have a four inch scar on their pitching arms as evidence of this career saving surgery. These
players typically perform as well, if not better, after the operation and have stronger arms, with radar
gun readings to match. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Usually this tendon will be harvested from the leg that is not used as the plant foot in the pitcher s
delivery. The removal of either of these tendons has a negligible effect on function. Then, the surgeon
opens up the elbow. In the original procedure, Frank Jobe used a large incision to get exposure to the
joint. For an idea of the size of this incision, hold your right arm out from your body with your palm
pointed upwards. With your other hand, feel along the inside of the elbow until you can find what
feels like a hard round nub. That s the proximal end of your ulna bone. The incision would have taken
place along the inside of the arm, beginning several inches above the elbow and ending several inches
below. As Dr. Akizuki explains, In order to get exposure to the joint you used to have to detach the
entire flexor attachment [the muscles that flex the elbow you can feel those muscles by feeling along
the incision site]. You used to just fillet that open. Once inside the elbow the unlar nerveis recognized,
lifted out, and moved to provide greater access to the joint. This is the funny bone nerve and it runs
inside the ulnar groove. With the muscle separated and the ulnar nerve safely out of the way, the
surgeon would then locate the damaged ligament. First scraping out the damaged tissue, then the next
step is to drill tunnels in the

Terracotta Warriors Research Paper
The Terracotta Warriors are thousands of individual hand crafted terracotta soldiers and horses. They
are lined up in rows, placed underground near China s first emperor, Qin Shi Huang s tomb. The
Warriors were made to accompany Qin Shi Huang in the afterlife, as he believed that they could be
animated. The Terracotta warriors are very significant to the Chinese culture as they show in great
detail, how the military was back then and the amazing craftsmanship of the ancient Chinese.
The Terracotta army was built in around 210 BCE and there are an estimated 8000 warriors, chariots
and horses, all suposedly serving Qin Shi Huang in his afterlife. The warriors were built to acompony
him so he could keep the same military power and imperial status, as he believed that the statues

an estimated 700,000 workers the warriors and tomb took around 40 years to build. He believed that

The Outrageousness of The Battle of Little Bighorn
The Battle of Little Bighorn is considered to be one of the biggest blunders in American military
history. It is also believed to be one of the most unfair decisions made by the military because of the
fact that it was extremely discriminatory to the Native Americans that lived in the region of the Black
Hills in South Dakota. The rights of Native Americans has been an ongoing issue ever since the
pilgrims started making their settlements on Indian land. Indians had finally had enough of the
Americans taking their land and in June of 1876, a bloody battle took place that would never be
forgotten.
Before the battle was even thought of, the Lakota Sioux and the Cheyenne Native Americans were
outraged that the new settlers were starting to violate their sacred lands. They lived in and around the
Black Hills in South Dakota and near Montana. They were native to that land and believed it was their
birthright. They didn t want it for the gold or precious minerals in the mountains. Their ancestors had
lived there in generations before and they wanted their children to live there for generations to
come. The Sioux had signed a treaty with the American government saying that their sacred grounds in
the Black Hills would be respected, which they were, up until gold was found in the area and
American citizens flocked to the sacred lands of the Indians to strike it rich in the Black Hills.
Although the treaty had promised them rights to the lands, the U.S. government ordered the Native

interest, and diminished self esteem. Symptoms of depression take over every part of a person. It can
hinder emotions, bodily utilities, behaviors, and thoughts. Depression is a common mood disorder and
can affect any age group. Depression occurs when a person experiences a loss of self esteem. Such as
doing badly in a class, the loss of a loved one, or losing a career. Mild symptoms may go unnoticed
and will not affect everyday life. More severe symptoms can become enervating and can last for
extended periods of time. Identification or diagnosis of the disease depends on the harshness and

To be diagnosed with major depressive disorder, the person must experience depressed mood or loss
of interest and at least four other indicators for a period of two weeks or more. These symptoms must
be so severe that they interfere with the person s ability to function on a daily basis. In extreme cases,
depression can lead to self harm and suicide. More than 70 percent of individuals diagnosed with
major depressive disorder will correspondingly have an additional psychological disorder at some
point in their lives. The DSM 5 recognizes several different forms that the disorder can manifest as
(subtypes.) These subtypes include depression along with: anxious distress, mixed features,
melancholic features, psychotic features, catatonic features, atypical features, seasonal pattern, and
peripartum onset. (Nolen Hoeksema, 2014) Anxiety is exceedingly common in depression. (Watson,
2009) Mixed features has the presence of at least three symptoms of mania, but do not meet the
criteria for a manic episode. Melancholic features include the inability to experience pleasure and in
which the other physiological symptoms of depression are mainly noticeable. Phsychotic features
include delusions or hallucinations. Catatonic features people have bizarre actions known as catatonia.
These behaviors may include not reacting to their environment or excited agitation. Atypical features

Reflection On The Twenty Second Amendment Of The...
The twenty second amendment of the Constitution of United States states that, No person shall be
elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of
President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was
elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once. I fully support this
amendment and believe that it has helped our country many times. As the book says in Chapter 6,
Popular wisdom has it that second termers are therefore lame duck(pg.111) , I feel that this is a very
true statement. I feel that the general populations mindset that second and third terms for presidents
are usually duds did not just happen suddenly. I believe these views evolved over a longer amount of
times. People began seeing presidential success fall off as the president returned to office after their
first term and formed their opinions off of these personal observations. The book confirms this idea,

Rape As A Weapon Of War
Being a part of a global community comes with many responsibilities and duties. People of the global
community have to be aware of the dangers that are present in the lives of many people all over the
globe. Human Rights issues are quite serious and violations of these rights should not be taken lightly.
In exploration of a global human rights issue, the discovery of rape as a tool in war was a gross
violation of human rights as well as overwhelmingly a gender issue. Rape used as a tool of war has
devastated and destroyed people, communities, families, and traditions. When discussing rape as
weapon of war, there are two main modern day conflicts that can not be overlooked. Rape as a weapon
of war is brought into light by the wars of Congo and Bosnia. These two conflicts brought the eyes of
the world onto the global issue of rape in war and more specifically how it is used as a tool of
ethnocide and genocide. The recent conflict in the Congo has been rooted in the 1994 Rwandan
Genocide and related violence in Burundi which saw hundreds of thousands of Hutus flee both
countries into eastern Zaïre. (First and Second) In the Rwandan genocide, Hutu power groups (called
the Interahamwe and the Impuzamugambi) led mass killings of Tutsis and pro peace Hutus, murdering
800,000 people in approximately 100 days. (Congo) In response, the Tutsi led Rwandan Patriotic
Front, or RPF, overthrew the Rwandan Hutu government.
During and after the genocide, an estimated 2 million refugees,

Ignominy in the Puritan Community
Yonatan Zeff Thelonious Johnson Block B English 3 Honors October 14, 2012 Ignominy in the
Puritan Community The title of Nathaniel Hawthorne s The Scarlet Letter refers to the literal symbol
of ignominy that Hester Prynne s community forces her to wear as a reminder of her sin. Though the
word ignominy is used in sympathetic passages that describe Hester Prynne s disgrace as an adulteress
and out of wedlock mother, its use at the same time reveals an extremely critical description of Hester
s community; Hawthorne finds that what is truly disgraceful is the way the community relishes and
exploits the opportunity to punish one of its members. Through powerful diction and imagery
describing Hester s sin and through ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With this description, Hester s humanity is maintained, even when the community, all of it, objectifies
her as a teaching tool. The image of her heart flung , spurn[ed] and trample[d] upon demonstrates both
the narrator s sympathy toward Hester and animosity toward Puritan society, regardless of the age of
the member. Shortly after his description of the schoolboy s callous treatment of Hester, the narrator
continues with a harsh account of the scaffold and pillory once employed upon it, that instrument of
discipline that represented the very ideal of ignominy (52). The pillory reflects the nature of the
community s sense of justice, and the narrator finds it extremely harsh. The word ideal, often
associated with perfection, suggests that the pillory signifies the ultimate desired effect of ignominy:
public shame from which the sinner cannot turn away. Next, it would seem that Hawthorne speaks out
directly and emotionally to the reader, declaring, There can be no outrage, methinks, against our
common nature, whatever be the delinquencies of the individual, no outrage more flagrant than to
forbid the culprit to hide his face for shame (52). Hawthorn s use of word methinks suggests his
forceful personal address on this issue of cruelty; he weighs in powerfully against the malice of the
Pilgrim community that punishes Hester, even if it has not subjected her to the pillory. The word no
implies Hawthorne s view that this punishment is

Overpopulation And Its Effects On Our Environment Essay
While there are plenty of babies being born every single day, do you ever wonder how the world will
continue to sustain the growing population? The population of the world is continuing to grow at a
dangerously, increasing rate. There are already at least 6.5 billion people on earth. According to,
Overpopulation is main threat to planet , the population is said to reach 9 billion by 2050. The
overpopulation of humans is causing destructive impacts on our environment and a high demand for
resources. One destructive impact would be climate change because of the exceeding rate of humans
causing pollution in the air. While the earth is having a tough time sustaining particular resources, the
high demand causes the earth to force to get its nonrenewable resources. Overpopulation can lead to
increased impacts of over packaging, depletion of resources, habitat loss, and etc. Overpopulation is a
controversial topic to me because while there are those who aren t paying attention to its effects the
world is displaying its resources can soon be gone. Addressing the problems and concerns of
overpopulation now, can help save our lives in the future, LITERALLY!
In order to slow down the rate of overpopulation we must first access the causes. Many technological

Hypothesis:
If a burger, fries and Sprite are blended together and tested for monosaccharides, starches, proteins
and lipids, then it will test positive for all four nutrients because the buns contain carbohydrates or
monosaccharides, fries are made of potatoes which contain a lot of starch, the meat in the burger will
contain protein and there are a lot of fats or lipids in the oil used to fry the fries.
If chutney is tested for monosaccharides, starches, proteins and lipids, then it will test positive for all

Essay On Impact Of Poverty On Child Development
Poverty has a large impact on a child s development, the child will be affected in a number of different
ways involving their education, health, behaviour and their intellect. When a child lives in a household
where their basic needs are being compromised it is often due to the family having to use the
resources that they do have access to for other factors that contribute to the whole family. As the
family have limited amount of resources it is often found the children have less access to opportunities
than those who aren t living in poverty. This essay will explore the negative impacts of poverty on a
child s health within developing countries, there are two forms of poverty, relative and absolute,
however it is more common for absolute poverty to occur within these developing countries.
Malnutrition is commonly found to be associated with poverty, often it is due to the lack of income
into the household which restricts the family to the food products that they can buy. The food that the
family are able to afford are often low in essential nutrients and vitamins, these food products are
cheap to buy and easy to cook. Malnutrition is defined as the lack of consumption of nutrients which
then leads to further health problems. Being malnourished can impact a child s development,
including weight loss, growth issues and cognitive issues. Having the correct nutrition intake is
required within childhood to ensure that the child develops in the correct way, it is extremely

Bcg Matrix Is A Model Developed By Bruce Henderson Of The...
The BCG matrix is a model developed by Bruce Henderson of the Boston Consulting Group
(NetMBA). The goal of the BCG matrix was to allow fellow marketers to easily analyze a product,
whether it be old, or new, as to how effective it was in that particular market and if the product was
successful in its overall product growth and market share. When it comes to selling a product, a
company must overcome competitors in the same market who are looking to take a piece of the share
of consumers. Therefore, in order to be successful, the use of a model such as the BCG allows a
marketer to assess their competitive advantages as well as the ability to calculate the relative market
share. For example, once you have products that have hit the market and have already established
themselves, you can check back and cross examine those products to see which ones are important to
your success as an organization and which ones you should contemplate scaling back on because these
products may be viewed as questionable. According to NetMBA the BCG matrix contains four key
components; the stars, the cash cows, dogs, and question marks. The stars of the matrix are the go
getters. This part of the mix contains your products that continuously show an increase in growth
industry within the market and a high market share. In other words, these products have been so
superb that they influence deeper looks into how to smartly invest whilst bringing about a noticeable
change to rekindle interest in

Open Carry On Campus Essay
Open Carry on Campus: Good or Bad?
Many students and faculty members fear that allowing weapons on campus may cause tension and
hostility or even cause minor situations to rapidly escalate. Others feel as if open carry on campus is
missing link to reducing the number of school shootings across the country. When it comes to
allowing firearms on campus, some of the most important factors to consider are: how active shooter
situations will be handled, why it is important to be on alert, and should first responders be the only
one responsible campus safety. These are the factors that ultimately decided whether students and
faculty will end up as victims or heroes in a state of crisis.

Sitting through an hour long lecture or waiting in line to speak with financial aid are some examples
of an average day on campus. It is during these times when students are least expecting tragedy to
strike. A student may hear a loud noise and think nothing of it until they realize that noise was the
sound of a shooting rampage that has reached their area and by that time it s usually too late. Campus
safety is everyone s responsibility and remaining on alert is the only way to ensure less people are
victimized. One of the first, and most memorable, attacks happened on August 1, 1966. Charles
Whitman, a former marine, took rifles and other weapons to the observation deck atop the Main
Building tower at The University of Texas Austin, then randomly opened fire on the surrounding
campus and streets. Over the next 96 minutes, far longer than the average active shooter attack, he
shot and killed fifteen people. Included in the death toll was one unborn child, and injured thirty one
others. The incident ended when police reached Whitman and shot him dead. During this event,
civilians played a vital role in assisting first responders in the take down of Whitman and Allen Crum,
a 40 year old bookstore manager and retired Air Force tail gunner, accompanied police up the tower in
pursuit of Whitman. While Crum was armed, it solely because officers handed him a firearm to assist
in Whitman s take down.

Teaching Learning Styles And Strategies Essay
ABSTRACT: The objective of an English teacher is to make the learners learn English successfully
and to enhance their communicative competence as this is the need of the hour. In the present scenario
the learners themselves are coming forward to learn English and they are actively participating in the
classroom activities. With little guidance of the teacher they attempt to become the efficient scholars
of English. So there is a complete shift from teacher oriented approach to a learner centered approach.
The learners tend to participate actively when the class is interesting. To make the class more
interesting the teacher selects the topics that interest them. Gradually this approach changed to an
interest oriented learner centered approach. In this process of learning the language learners adopt
their own methods and strategies depending on their styles of learning. They select the more
appropriate strategies to fit their learning styles. This paper focuses on the role of learning styles and
strategies in a language classroom.
It is the responsibility of the teacher to be aware of the learning styles of the learners so as to make the
learning teaching process an effective one. Moreover the learning style of one learner is different from
another learner. So the strategies they employ in learning a language also differ. For example some of
the learners prefer listening to lectures on language to writing or reading the language. Some learners
may be comfortable to read rather

  • 2. Examining The Place Of The Russian Minority Examining the Place of the Russian Minority in Latvia: Aliens, non citizens or stateless persons? Introduction The region of Latvia has a long history of occupation by foreign powers and so its ethnicity is quite varied. The Latvian Republic is one of the Baltic States located on the coast of the Baltic Sea. Along with its neighbours Lithuania and Estonia, Latvia gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. It is when Latvia gained its status as an independent state that the most crucial period for the Russian speaking residents began, as at that time the country s main issue was the status of its 1.1 million Russian speaking residents. Under Latvia s 2000 census (Heleniak, 2006), 30 per cent of the country s 2.4 million population ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The year independence was restored was defining for many thousands of Russians permanently living in Latvia. On 3rd March 1991 a nonbinding advisory referendum took place with the result that 73% of all Latvian residents supported the notion for independent Latvia (Troitsky, 2011). The Popular Front of Latvia, the national movement which was promoting the idea of segregation, advocated that all permanent residents will be entitled to and qualified for Latvian citizenship (Melvin, 1995, p. 34). All those who want to be citizens of Latvia can be (Lieven, 1997, p. 304) stated Anatolijs Gorbunovs, Chairman of the Latvian Supreme Council. However, the universal citizenship for all permanent residents was not adopted. Latvia restored the rights and status only for those persons who were identified as citizens under the 1919 Law together with their descendants (Aleinikoff Klusmeyer, 2001, p. 31). Thereby, for the majority of ethnic non Latvians citizenship was not granted, even when the biggest portion of them were born in Latvia. This was seen as an attempt to suppress national extinction (Mole, 2012, p. 89 90) caused by, according to the radicals in Latvia, the Russian people. Those people became non citizens not holding citizenship to any other country and without the right to vote. In Latvia as well as in Estonia the Russian population is seen as a reminder of their unhappy past (Best, 2013, p. 34), thus the Russian people are not welcomed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Oprah Winfrey Golden Media Rhetorical Analysis Should celebrities use their spotlights to speak their minds about politics and current world issues? Some argue that celebrities are only here to entertain and should not ruin that by voicing their political opinions. Mark Wahlberg for example, stated in an interview with Task and Purpose that celebrities should stay out of politics as they are in their own little bubble and have no way of truly understanding the struggles of average people. On the other hand, some celebrities have the exact opposite opinion. In her Golden Globes acceptance speech, Oprah Winfrey denounces silence and encourages everyone to stand up for what is right no matter what their social standing is. In this speech, the #MeToo movement is referenced, a movement that swept the internet in 2017, continuing into 2018. On the website for this movement, it is told that this movement was founded in 2006 by Tarana Burke as a movement to spread awareness of sexual harassment and assault, empowering women to use #MeToo if they have experienced either in their lives. Also referenced was the Time s Up movement, a similar movement that was specifically made for women in the entertainment industry who have been taken advantage of by men who are above them in the business, men who abuse their power at the expense of women. Very recently there was a movement of women in Hollywood publicly accusing their attackers, unmasking many individuals and revealing who they really are. One of the most notable cases, as well as one of the first, was the women who accused producer Harvey Weinstein. This case not only being notable because of Weinstein s position in Hollywood as one of the top producers in the business, but also because of the quantity of women who stood up to accuse him. I realized that everything that surrounds me; the tree in my yard, the house that I live in, and the chair that I am sitting in right now are made of the same exact materials that I am made of! I made this discovery whilst I was discussing science with my dad. Earlier that day, at school we had been talking about molecules and how they were made of atoms. My dad often likes to extend my understanding of subjects which I study at school, which is what he was doing that day. Since we had discussed atoms and molecules in school my dad had decided to go a little further with me, and talk about what atoms were made of. My dad got into the car, and we started on the short drive home. The whole ride I was bouncing up and down in my seat in anticipation. When I finally got home, my dad gave in to me and said we could talk about string theory. We sat down and he explained string theory to me. He then explained how strings could be what protons, neutrons and electrons. The story of the novel is shown to be a result of the conspiracy formed by a member of the Church society. In a dictionary, the word conspiracy is defined as the act of secretly planning to do something that is harmful or illegal . However, this is not it. Conspiracy is formed to achieve goals which are made not by the people, but by their greed for power, wealth and respect. In Angels and Demons, power is shown to be the main reason for the formation of conspiracy. Dan Brown has successfully highlighted in his book the kinds of people who form conspiracies. One can see that the people who are apparently the most trustworthy, respectful and who happen to have a chance in attaining power are the ones who secretly make plans to harm those who stand in their way of achieving success . Many parents believe that they should not discipline their children by spanking; however, spanking for disciplinary measure is a necessary teachable moment for children. Majority of the population thinks that spanking is barbaric basing it off of abuses rather than the biblical model. Many parents who think that way have problems at home including conflicts all the time, loss of control, and no way to fix the problems. The Reason For Popularity Of Online Shopping EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: This research project was carried out to identify the reason for popularity of online shopping, to describe why eBay and Amazon became successful without having a High Street store, to compare eBay and Amazon in terms of revenues and customer s opinions and to develop ideas on how they could improve their performance in future. This research draws the attention to facts that despite both companies have many bad reviews, potential consumers are still attracted to shop using their websites, while present customers are consciously complaining about eBay s and Amazon s unprofessional customer service and after sale service, yet they still shop using both websites, resulting in eBay overcoming analysts predictions about their profits every quarter and Amazon investing big amounts of money in its growth. Primary research that was conducted, showed that lower prices and wider range of products are the two main factors that attract consumers to shop online (despite the awareness of bad customer service and after sale service). This project also finds that prospects of eBay financial position are positive, however Amazon is not doing well. Some Theorists Believe Cinema Must Be Realistic And May Some theorists believe cinema must be realistic and may only be seen as art if it remains in its original form a static image on film stock. Others, however, argue that cinema is an important and relevant art medium no matter its form. Digital cinema, while making use of new and different technologies such as animation, is the next step in the evolution of film. Contrary to what certain theorists believe, it is the most efficient and most artistically inclined way to create films as it offers a world of possibilities. Chaplin s personal beliefs, in combination with the events happening in the world at the time, were a driving force in what message one of his later films carried. • 15. Pride And Prejudice And The Pursuit Of Happiness Summary Claudia Johnson critical article response Claudia Johnson in her essay, Pride and Prejudice and the Pursuit of Happiness, claims that happiness is the centralized theme of the novel, Pride and Prejudice. Johnson suggests that the element of happiness carries the weight of political and social commentary, a comment preceded by a litany of examples. One example being Darcy s struggle to find happiness in his independent choice of marrying Elizabeth while combating his sense of self consequence [that] is characterized by a haughty determination to be mortified by everyone outside his small circle (349). Johnson also defends Austen from critics who claim the novel supports a fairytale style happy ending that doesn t resolve the political or social issues brought about in the novel s opening pages. Johnson combats this criticism by stating the political resolution can be found not within the novel s closing pages, but within the actions of the characters. Johnson goes further to state that Austen s care to establish the standards of her characters happiness provides us with index of their moral imaginations, tempers, and resources that enable us to engage in judicious moral evaluation without resorting to the conclusive moralizing characteristics of some of her contemporaries (350). Johnson evaluates that each character serves a role not only in the narrative, but more importantly as manifestations of Austen s own social commentary of her era and social/political ... Next there is some fault zones separating the Camptio, Poleta, and Harkless formations. We then see some more overturned layers with the contacts between Saline Spring Valley Formation (lower and upper members) above the Mule Spring Formation along with some inferred folding. With a normal fault separating the inferred folding event, we see where the overturning occurs. Next there is a large Basalt field with a spot of the Harkless formation. Again we see over tuning as the Basalt field ends there are the Devonian and Mississippian rock Layers on top of the basalt. Separating these overturned layers from the Harkless Formation and the Saline valley Formation (upper member), which are not overturned, is a thrust fault. From this information, there was a major stress event sometime after the Tertiary period causing the rock layers to fold and overturn. And from this stress event and from the folding, normal and thrust faults are formed. Finally we see that there were alluvial and landslide deposits from the Quaternary after the folding, faulting, and over ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 18. John Steinbeck s East Of Eden I. SUBJECT John Steinbeck s East of Eden centers on the Trask and Hamilton families in the year 1902 in the Salinas Valley, California. After growing up in Connecticut alongside his brother Charles under the harsh parenting and rejection of his father, Adam Trask seeks to find happiness and peace. He vows to be a better man than his father and feels the rolling valleys of California calling him. One night, Cathy Ames crawls onto the doorstep of Adam and Charles home after her boyfriend attempted to kill her. Adam cares for Cathy and soon falls in love with the woman she portrays herself to be. He is unaware of her dark past and her evil motive to further herself in life. It is through the opposition of one another that an absence of the love they so earnestly desire is bred. Rejection is first present in Cyrus Trask s raising of his two sons, Adam and Charles. Cyrus utilizes a harsh parenting style, one in which he trains his sons for the military from a young age. Charles excels at the rigorous trainings, while Adam struggles and begins to develop a hatred for his father. As Cyrus pushes Adam harder, a favoring of one son over the other is apparent. Cyrus favors Adam because he feels he is the stronger and better son, I love you better. I always have...Else why would I have given myself the trouble of hurting you? (Steinbeck 28). Charles feels rejected and works to gain his father s approval, but Cyrus continues to favor Adam regardless of Charles efforts. It is due to this rejection that Charles develops a sensitive and violent personality, Rage came first and then a coldness, a possession; noncommittal eyes and a pleased smile and no voice at all, only a whisper. When that happened murder was on the way (30). Charles violence and anger are a failing effort to fight for love, which in return only makes him a broken man. Cathy Ames is an example of how rejection by one woman can lead to the downfall of all those around her. Cathy was born an enigma and used this to manipulate others. People were drawn to her out of curiosity so in return she lures them in and then swiftly rejects them. They would ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 19. Human Intelligence And Artificial Intelligence More than often, we encounter the idea of computers becoming smarter and surpassing the human brain; opinions like these are accepted by the general public and are perceived skeptical by scientists, psychologists, and philosophers alike. The concern is not between machine and brain, but whether human ingenuity is as exceptional as or better than nature itself. The human being, a natural part of the world, has evolved from lower organisms to much higher, complex creatures; eventually the evolutionary process occurred because we were able to interact with our environment and being shaped by it physically and mentally, as this interaction was at an all time high, we came up with intelligence. Intelligence has fascinated man since the dawn of time, and lead man to create one of the greatest innovations that rivaled human intelligence: artificial intelligence. The competition between human intelligence and artificial intelligence ultimately leads to the battle of nature and science. Eventually these two forms of intelligence, human and artificial, must coincide and it must be understood how each would interact with one another and be utilized. The latest technology incorporates some sort of artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence (AI) is the intelligence exhibited by machines or software (). All types of machines and software contain some sort of artificial intelligence, even the simplest ones. AI is a system that perceives its surrounding environment and takes actions ... For an idea of the size of this incision, hold your right arm out from your body with your palm pointed upwards. With your other hand, feel along the inside of the elbow until you can find what feels like a hard round nub. That s the proximal end of your ulna bone. The incision would have taken place along the inside of the arm, beginning several inches above the elbow and ending several inches below. As Dr. Akizuki explains, In order to get exposure to the joint you used to have to detach the entire flexor attachment [the muscles that flex the elbow you can feel those muscles by feeling along the incision site]. You used to just fillet that open. Once inside the elbow the unlar nerveis recognized, lifted out, and moved to provide greater access to the joint. I feel that the general populations mindset that second and third terms for presidents are usually duds did not just happen suddenly. I believe these views evolved over a longer amount of times. Ignominy in the Puritan Community Yonatan Zeff Thelonious Johnson Block B English 3 Honors October 14, 2012 Ignominy in the Puritan Community The title of Nathaniel Hawthorne s The Scarlet Letter refers to the literal symbol of ignominy that Hester Prynne s community forces her to wear as a reminder of her sin. Though the word ignominy is used in sympathetic passages that describe Hester Prynne s disgrace as an adulteress and out of wedlock mother, its use at the same time reveals an extremely critical description of Hester s community; Hawthorne finds that what is truly disgraceful is the way the community relishes and exploits the opportunity to punish one of its members. With this description, Hester s humanity is maintained, even when the community, all of it, objectifies her as a teaching tool. The image of her heart flung , spurn[ed] and trample[d] upon demonstrates both the narrator s sympathy toward Hester and animosity toward Puritan society, regardless of the age of the member. Shortly after his description of the schoolboy s callous treatment of Hester, the narrator continues with a harsh account of the scaffold and pillory once employed upon it, that instrument of discipline that represented the very ideal of ignominy (52). The pillory reflects the nature of the community s sense of justice, and the narrator finds it extremely harsh. The word ideal, often associated with perfection, suggests that the pillory signifies the ultimate desired effect of ignominy: public shame from which the sinner cannot turn away. Next, it would seem that Hawthorne speaks out directly and emotionally to the reader, declaring, There can be no outrage, methinks, against our common nature, whatever be the delinquencies of the individual, no outrage more flagrant than to forbid the culprit to hide his face for shame (52). Hawthorn s use of word methinks suggests his forceful personal address on this issue of cruelty; he weighs in powerfully against the malice of the Pilgrim community that punishes Hester, even if it has not subjected her to the pillory.
