The Pros And Cons Of Progress In Latin America
The root of liberalism ideas in America, as in the rest of the world, came from the age
of Enlightenment in France. After the revolution, French intellectuals began new
ideas of liberty, fraternity and equality. These ideas will spread later on in Europe and
the Americas during the Napoleon era. Just after that time, the Latin Americans
began their journey to independence in 1808. The Liberals in Latin Americabelieved
in democracy and were against the power of church, social classes and slavery while
the conservative wanted to keep the same systems existing before the independence.
Although the conservatives and the church ruled for decades in Latin America, the
liberals will come back in 1825 due to the social and economic transformation...
Thanks to Progress, Latin America witnessed a rapid urbanization due to the
expansion of railroad tracks and new buildings. Besides, the enhancement of the
economy and the expansion of education for everyone especially for women. Also,
Progress ended the influence of the church and the rule of conservatives which lasted
for decades. The negatives impacts of Progress would have a bad consequences on
the future of Latin America countries. Due to the rapid urbanization and the
enhancement of the economy, Latin America had to borrow a lot of money which
leaded to the debt crisis. Also, many cities, like Buenos Aires, lost their cultural
heritage because of Progress. But the most negative impact of Progress was that only
the elites who owned lands already benefited from the export boom and their property

BACKGROUND Staples began operations in May 1986 when Tom Stemberg, a
Harvard Business School
MBA graduate and pronounced retailer pioneered the first Staples office supply
superstore in Brighton, Massachusetts. Tom Stemberg who was early rooted in
retail after leaving school to his first job on the store floor of Jewel Corporation,
bagging groceries, stocking the aisle and maximizing sales later to become the
youngest vice president of the company at age 28. He was known for his aggressive
marketing tactics which he used to successfully develop and launch the first line of
generic foods sold in the US, After leaving Jewel Corporation Stemberg embarked
on a similar adventure to run the grocery division of another retailer, he was later
fired. Leo Khan a former rival in the retail industry approached Stemberg with and
the idea of a new business venture and offered to back the venture with $500,000,
Stemberg review options but none seemed viable at the time. The idea of Staples
was born out of Stemberg interview for a top position at a Dutch based warehouse
club named Makro, Stemberg was astonished by the rate at which office supplies
were being sold at the time at the company and contemplated whether or not a
