Our Town by Thornton Wilder is unusual and unique. The play begins in the town of Grover s
Corners, New Hampshire. The reader is introduced to two neighboring families: the Webbs and
Gibbs. The Stage Manager comes across as a sort of narrator and aquaintes the reader with the
name of the play and its author. The plot s structure makes this play different than that of most any
other drama. The attributes and special qualities of the Stage Manager, the lack of unity of time and
place, and the title of the acts all contribute to the structure of this play.
The structure of the plot itself is unusual. There are no props and no backdrop; the Stage Manager
is the only thing or person on stage at the beginning of the play. There is also no fourth wall when

The time between each act goes from two years to nine years (between the first and second acts
and then the second and third acts). The Stage Manager also has flashbacks to the past and
flashforwards to the future in every act. There are a variety of locations that are used for the
duration of the play, as well. Although Grover s Corners is the prime overall setting, most of the
first act takes place in the homes of the Webbs and Gibbs families; both of them are usually on the
stage at the same time which contributes to the sameness of things in the town. The second act

My Experience At A Children s Camp
The past few days of observation are based upon my final week as a coordinator for a children s
camp. Including my interactions with people as our programs are winding down and the
unexpected realities of what was going on outside of the camp. In this week I experienced; upward
social comparison, availability heuristic, mortality salience and social cognition.
Upward social comparison I participated in a panel discussing the benefits of advanced
placement classes. In my discussion of my personal experiences, I talked about comparing
myself to my more intelligent classmates. In high school I felt like I was not as mart as my
classmates. I discussed how it made me work harder, I wanted to be at what I perceived was a
higher level. The example in the book mentioned studies of people using upward social
comparison to motivate themselves to success (pg. 86). As mentioned by the text upwards
social comparison can be a positive tool for motivation. The textbook also spoke about the
dangers of comparing yourself with others if a person does not believe they can reach what they
are aspiring to be. I recognize what the danger in upward social comparison could be, it would be
hard to process failure if you lived your entire life comparing yourself to others. I do not know if I
thought I could reach what I was comparing myself to, but I believe I benefited from the push.
Eventually, I no longer relied the comparison.
