The Most Important Thing You Remember About A Thesis...
The most important thing to remember about a thesis statement is it gives the reader your
opinion and you are entitled to your opinion. You are also giving the reader a new article to read
and allow them to give feedback if necessary. This isn t new to me, for I ve done a thesis
statement before and received good feedback from fellow classmates. What s different is all of us
were focused on once topic and had to come up with our own thesis on that assigned topic. It
worked out well.
Thesis Statement Number 1: Judging A Book by the Cover
People who jump to conclusions without prior knowledge should be aware of people s feelings
and not make a big deal about it. It causes personal problems and judging can take a toll on people
who are sensitive and want honest opinions. Today, there a re more than seven billion people in
the world. Each and everyone of them are human and have a mind. They are entitled to their
own opinion and have every right to express themselves. The hard truth is their opinion can be
taken to a new level and be considered judging. Judging, or looking done on someone, is
expressing how you feel about a topic in a negative manner. Whether is an artist s book, an
authors book or a plate of food. These things are judge without any knowledge. Judging mainly
goes to people s appearance, personality and interests. For example, a man named John looks down
upon another man named Abel, even though John doesn t know Abel. This is a ridiculous

In the corporate field of our country, Judicial Forums started to play a very important role in the
life of a company The Central Government started to take initiative by bringing effecting changes

debenture holders but also the others (i.e.) fixed deposit holders, Banks, Term Lending Institutions,
vendors, consumers and public at large.

Economic Development Office For The State Of Texas
The summer of 2014, I interned at the Economic Development Office for the state of Texas. The
office was tasked with preparing relocation incentives for companies in order to create jobs. The
office was split into different departments totaling about 45 people. The office worked strictly under
the Governor. One would answer the phone, Office of the Governor, Economic Development...
Economic Development offices around the country came under repetitive criticism for behaving
as governors slush funds. Essentially there are clear lines of imperative control from superior
offices. The office was responsible for overseeing the economic development of the whole state.
In other ways, the office directly contrasted Weber s definition. Since the office was able to
distribute funds and abate taxes, it made incredible financial decisions for companies and the
taxpayers of the state. Awards could not be given out based on a specific set of rules. There was
careful consideration into a companies intentions, how they were prepared for the future, and if
they fit the new model of businesses Texas wanted to attract. In this regard, the office did not
always make systematic decisions. Those promoted were the best performing, most ambitious, and
took initiative; only residue of a seniority system remained. A meritocracy, in direct opposition to a
tenured hierarchy, opened a dichotomy between the older and younger generations. Under
performers were let go regardless of tenure. On a

The Los Angeles Area Is A Major Development Boom
Introduction
The Los Angeles area is currently undergoing a major development boom but it has not included
enough affordable housing to to address housing shortages and great housing costs. Within the past
few years the area has begun to address its severe urban sprawl issues by providing developers with
density bonuses and improving the walkability of certain urban centers but this still has not done
enough to keep pace with the housing demand.
How can Los Angeles meet the housing needs of this extremely large and rapidly growing
population in a sustainable fashion? The Los Angeles area doesn t need more sprawl that s for sure
and the shear size of the city itself lends itself to a logical step: Urban Infill.
What is Urban Infill?
Urban infill is defined as new development that is sited on vacant or undeveloped land within an
existing community, and that is enclosed by other types of development. The term urban infill itself
implies that existing land is mostly built out and what is being built is in effect filling in the
gaps. The term most commonly refers to building single family homes in existing neighborhoods
but may also be used to describe new development in commercial, office or mixed use areas.

County happens to have an abundance of vacant lots as well as underutilized lots that are zoned

All cars have a scent. Many people use fresheners to get rid of unsavory odors, but is it right to
merely cover these up? Instead of masking them, it might be beneficial to have them analyzed at a

Corporal punishment teaches kids to be respectful. In source A it is said Kids at the schoolsat the

Japan And China
Chinese and Japanese economies both make up large areas of the worlds economy; however, there
are many differences in these countries with respect to economic development and current
economic state. Analysis of Japans and Chinas economic development requires the observation of
historical components as well as current actions to stimulate economy. The history of Chinese and
Japanese economies holds many similarities and differences. Both Japan and Chinaexperienced
growth in the 1400 s, driving for a more advanced societies, with improved economic policies.
However, in Japan the economic advances were more significant, especially when taking into
account their trade with European nations in the 1500 s, allowing for stimulation of their economy

Conversely, Japan s economic growth was not significant in the early 1900 s, due to their push
towards militarization. Once the 1930 s arrived, Japan began to invade China, at this point, both
economies were not expanding greatly, most of their resources were being put towards battle as
opposed to the trade that was necessary for their economic growth. After the second world war,
Japan and China were attempting to repair and grow, despite this, China began to experience a shift
in government which would greatly affect their economy, the end of the Chinese Civil War marked
the rise of a communist dictatorship. Japan, in the 1960 s experienced immense economic growth,
with US investing in their munitions and their lack of focus on militarization, Japan experienced
10% average growth. The Chinese dictatorship under Mao can be partially attributed to Japanese
growth, due to the fear America held towards the spread of communism, if the United States held
influence over Japan, they could keep it as a sphere of influence, thus stimulating the Japanese

the concept of the very reasonably priced Local Yokel . It is a three course meal containing
locally sourced ingredients. I didn t order it this time, but my date did, with wine pairings. We
started by splitting the House Smoked Salmon. I liked the smoked salmon itself, and the potato
cake with goat cheese was quite delectable, but it was slightly rich together. Personally, I like the
simple taste of smoked salmon by itself. With the cheese, I think it was too rich as a starter, so I did
not finish it. Also, since they pre split it for us, we both got a relatively large portion. They also
bring around a bread basket and let you choose from three different breads. The sourdough and
spicy flat bread were awesome; I probably had five or six pieces of that flat bread over the course of
dinner. The poppy seed wheat was also good, but my least favorite of the three. Since my date
got the three courses as well, they brought out a chilled white shrimp soup for his appetizer after
we finished the salmon. I tried a bite and it was pretty good, but I do not think I would order it in
the future. His entrГ©e was a plethora of pork consisting of pork loin and barbecue pork belly.
They were both exceptional. I had the George s Bank Scallops for my entree. The Leek and Bacon
Risotto was simply amazing, possessing a enjoyable bacon flavor. His dessert course was a
strawberry rhubarb cobbler with vanilla ice cream. He loved it so much that I only got a small bite,
but it was really excellent. I am not a fan of fruit cobbler or pies but I could have ordered this and
been perfectly satisfied. I opted for the Toasted Georgia Pecan and Walnut Pie

How Did The Age Of Exploration Cause Social Changes In The...
The time period of 1492 to 1750 was an era of conquest and innovation. Arounnd this time was when
there was more interactions between the Eastern and Western hemispheres of the world. These
interactions had major impacts on the world as a whole at the time, both good and bad. During this
time in the Atlantic world, European dominance and the demand for God, gold, and glory remained
constant, while there were significant social changes in the Native American population and the
attitude that native had towards the Europeans. During this time period, Columbus was exploring
the Atlantic, however, many things stayed constant socially due to European greed. One continuity
was European dominance. This was largely in part because of their technology... Show more content

An example of this desire would be how Columbus s initial thought upon meeting the natives was
how they would be servant and were to find their gold. During the time period 1492 to 1750, the
Age of Exploration was occuring causing many things to change socially due to the increased
interaction between the two hemispheres. One changed that occured during this time was the
decreasing Native American population. The reason for this change was largely due to exposure to
western diseases that the natives had not grown used to, and also due to slaughtering and
enslavement by the Europeans. An example of this is when the Arawak Indians were enslaved by
the Spaniyards, who would work them to death and even kill them if they did not do what was
asked. Another change was the attitude that the Native Americans had towards the Europeans.
Initially, they were welcoming and even believed the Europeans were gods, but after a series of
unpleasant encounters, this opinion changed. An example of this would be the backlash from
Native Americans who would attack Europeans who attempted to colonize on their land. This time
period was an age of discovery that led to conquest and increased connections between

The Grapes Of Wrath And Jacob Lawrence s The Grapes Of Wrath
During the Dust Bowl and Great Depression migration in the United States impacted the nation just
as much as immigration did in the early twentieth century. The Dust Bowl was the time in which
severe dust storms occurred in the South because the ground was so infertile from all the years of
farming on it the wind would blow it away. Along with other agricultural and economic reasons it
was during this time that many Southerners began their migration North in search of work. John
Steinman s, The Grapes of Wrathand Jacob Lawrence s, The Migration Series demonstrate one
characteristic of the American Dream, the pursuit of happiness, through the theme of family both
during times of need and difficult situations.
The mother figures had the job to take care of everyone and make sure the family remained
together and one during their journey. One scene in The Grapes of Wrath the Joad family just
arrived at a camp and Mama Joad was making food when all the kids around her came to see if they
could be fed too. She knew she needed to take care of her family first and made sure that was a
priority. After they were fed she extended her love and care to the children of the camp by offering
them what was left of the remaining food. It was because of her nurturing persona she was able to
find a way to feed the children as well her family. Panel 11 labeled Food had doubled in price

books, playing football, and relaxing with posh, telling poor jokes at his own expense. Some
moments shown in this documentary are very personal David missing Posh, David dressing and
having his head shaved.
At certain stages there are commercial breaks. I think this is because different parts of David s
life are shown at different stages so when we see another part of David s life we are intervened
by a break. The makers of this documentary chose television as their medium because television
is accessible to millions of people. A great percentage of people living in the U.K have a T.V
therefore the makers of the David Beckham story knew it would be watched by many people and
fans that support David Beckham. I think this documentary had a great deal of impact on David

the T.V when they knew the David Beckham story was coming on. T.V has a better and bigger

Thyroidectomy Essay
Discussion:
Historically, the risks associated with major surgery to treat thyroid disease and the problems of
adequate hormonal replacement deterred surgeons from performing total thyroidectomies. Although
the procedure remains controversial it is increasingly being performed, and current indications
include cancer, toxic and nontoxic multinodular goitre and Graves disease. (1, 3, 12)
When the thyroid is resectable at presentation, total thyroidectomy is the current treatment of
choice for malignant disorders of the thyroid and valuable surgical option for the management of
several benign thyroid diseases, particularly among patients with an increased risk of recurrence.
(1, 13 16) Total thyroidectomy is recommended for patients with Graves disease because it
eliminates the source of the Graves disease autoantibodies; it eliminates the risk of disease
recurrence; hypothyroidism is predictable and controllable by immediate thyroxine replacement; it
alleviates any associated endocrine ophthalmopathy and the risk of malignancy among patients with
Graves disease. (9, 17, 18) Moreover, the risk of postoperative complications to the recurrent
laryngeal nerve and parathyroid glands are equivalent for total and subtotal thyroidectomy. (1, 12)

Energy Sources Of Renewable Biomass
I. INTRODUCTION
As an abundant, inexpensive, and renewable as well as environmentally friendly (i.e. CO2
neutral) energy source, biomass energy has been a particular focus of researcher and policy
makers as well as industries around the world (Chen, 2003). Renewable biomass presents an
important research area for energy source, considering the current global crises of exhaustible
sources of energy. Bioenergy is the 4th largest source of energy in the world, and it does not
contribute to the global warming through emissions of CO2 or any other green house gases.
Biomass pyrolysis has witnessed exponential growth in its research and has been investigated
extensively in the last few decades, first in the form of fixed bed reactors and later in the form of
moving bed reactors (fluidized bed, auger bed etc). As the combustion of solid biomass is
analogous to the combustion of other solid fuels, such as coal and waste, essentially the same
technology is applicable to all solid fuels, although modifications are required to handle the high
content of moisture and volatiles typically associated with biomass fuels (Duffy Eaton, 2013). In
this paper, which reviews the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of fixed/moving bed
solid gas reactors, biomass pyrolysis, gasification and combustion has been the focus of the study.
Combustion of biomass in the presence of carrier gases like N2 etc has been extensively studied,
with focus being on the numerical or CFD models which have

1 dozen12Rs. 4.00Rs. 4.00
2 dozen17Rs. 5.66Rs. 2.83 Thus, cost per dozen of labor is decreasing. This can be applied to

customers giving orders of more than one dozen because of the economies of scale as shown above.
Material Requirements:
The processor is required for mixing the ingredients for the cookies and is idle for most of the
time. The oven required for the purpose of baking is the major bottleneck and there is no
requirement for more than one processor. Hence, spending money on more than one processor
would not be advisable for Kristen s Cookie Company.
The baking trays are required for three activities, namely, filling it and keeping it ready for
baking, baking it in the oven, and cooling it after baking is done. Since the baking and cooling
processes will be going on for at most one tray at a given time and the mixing process gets
material ready for at most three trays of one dozen each, five trays would be sufficient, though,
even three trays would serve the purpose if mixing and filling activities are done properly. Hence,
it is advisable for Kristen s Cookie Company to go for at least three baking trays to maximize its
productivity.

Analysis Of Gary Steiner s Animal, Vegetable, Miserable
The essay of Gary Steiner, Animal, Vegetable, Miserable, advises that a vegan lifestyle is an
ethical lifestyle. He is a strict vegan which means no meat, cheese, eggs, or anything that contains
animal products and byproducts. Steiner seems to be an animal rights advocator, and his essay
pushes his beliefs with the hope that his opinions will gain the attention of people in American. The
written responses to Gary Steiner s article, Ethical Choices in what We Eat argues and agrees with
his pro vegan argument. Many conflicts in the use of animal products in our lives, but the tone of
his essay can sometimes undermine the reader affecting his cause to help eliminate animal slaughter.

even vegetarians and other people, committed to fighting against animal cruelty, are not enough to
create a vegan law.
The author s complains about the difficulties of managing his strict vegan lifestyle are meant to
highlight his dedication and determination, but can come off as whining. When Steiner states, You
just haven t lived until you ve tried to function as a vegan in a meat crazed society (847), it seems
as if he is about to relate a part of his life that the reader can empathize with, but it turns out to be
nothing but a springboard to launch a self centered diatribe in which he laments how difficult
his commitment to the strict vegan way of life is to maintain. The quote, To go down this road
is to stare headlong into an abyss that, to paraphrase Nietzsche, will ultimately stare back at you

formers reader of Steiner s article, agrees with the frustration that vegans go through. As he states
When one goes vegan, what seems obvious to that person is ridiculed by a large part of society
(850) as though they feel separated between worlds. Steiner and Chris are both implying that it s

Bill Morphology
Several examples of bill morphology describing foraging behavior and efficiency have been
discussed in class. The examples are Natural Selection in the wild with Medium ground Finches,
Sunbirds, and Crossbills extracting seeds. All of these examples show how bill morphology can
affect foraging. Foraging describes how birds look for food within their environment. Foraging
behavior was studied in Medium ground finches living on Daphne Major. In 1976 there were
1400 birds living on the island. The same year, the island received 122 mm of rain in the wet
season. The next year the island had a drought and only received 24 in of rain. The year after the
island received 128 mm of rain. This drought contributed to mortality of some of the birds. It
was found that out of a total of 388 juveniles only 1 survived. Most of the smaller birds died due to
lack of smaller seeds. In 1976, 17% of seeds eaten were large. The number jumped to 49% in 1977.
The smaller birds were mostly females. This lead to a depletion in the sex ratio. Before 1977,
there was one female to every male. However, in 1977 there was inly one female to every six
males. During this same time the amount of seed... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

open cones were the easiest for the the birds to extract the seeds from. The mandible length of the
birds affected how efficient the birds were at opening the reclosed cones. The birds did a slightly
better job at opening the closed cones. However, towards the end of experiment the birds ran out of

Billy Collins Forgetfulness Essay
In the poem Forgetfulness by Billy Collins he portrays the message of memory loss using
figurative language and examples. The message of this poem is saying that memory is a
precious thing that we should cherish daily. We should make use of it everyday because
everyday the older we get the more memories are being lost because they lose
importance.Through Collins use of imagery he allows the reader to have awareness and
guilt.Reason for saying so, is because it makes you think of how you ve been taking advantage
of your memories .He gives you notice using metaphors to help us understand the horror of
memory loss. The choice of words that the other uses in this poem is very well chosen and helps
gives the reader a visual of what losing a memory is like. A section from the poem Forgetfulness
by Billy Collins that helps the reader understand the true meaning of the poem is found in line 12
Something else is slipping away . The meaning of the quote is saying that even as we add

Decided to retire to the Southern Hemisphere of the brain, to a little fishing village where there

Effects of Human Capital on Maize Production in Ghana Essay
Agriculture constitutes about one third of GDP and provides employment for about two thirds of
the labor force in Sub Saharan Africa. Productivity growth in agriculture is therefore an important
element for economic growth and development. Yet, growth in this sector has been slow.
According to the World Bank (1989), agricultural growth for the continent from 1980 to 1989
averaged only 1.8% per year. Therefore, improving this growth rate is of increasing concern for
both governments and international organizations (Pinckney 1995). Investing in the human capital
base is regarded as one of the most effective ways to improve agricultural productivity (Nelson and
Phelps, 1966; Romer, 1990; Bindlish and Evenson, 1997; Birdsall et al., 1999).... Show more

Rivera (1998) argues that education, irrespective of the form, improves productivity to a very
significant extent.
1.2 Problem Statement
Agriculture is a very important sector in the Ghanaian economy. Although its contribution to
GDP decreased from 43.5% in 1990 to 21.5% in 2013, it still remains a significant player in the
economy of the country (Ghana Statistical Service 2008; ISSER 2011; CIA 2013). The
agricultural sector employs about 60% of the workforce in Ghana and can therefore be regarded as
the backbone of the Ghanaian economy (ISSER, 2011).
Maize is the most important cereal crop produced in Ghana and it is also the most widely
consumed staple food in Ghana (Morris et al., 1999). Maize accounts for 55% of grain output in
the country. Maize is also an important component of poultry feed and to a lesser extent the
livestock feed sector, as well as a substitute for the brewing industry.
Although maize productivity has been increasing over the years, studies show that Ghanaian
farmers are yet to produce enough to meet the nation s demand. The most recent domestic
production data shows that the shortfall between domestic production and consumption would
reach 267,000 Mt by 2015 if there were no productivity improvements (MOFA, 2011), prolonging
the continual

Taylorism or Scientific Management Principles at Ford...
The central theme of this essay will deal with the role of Taylorism or scientific management in a
specific organization. The primary focus will be to critically discuss how the various methods of
scientific management are applicable to the chosen organization, which in this case will be Ford
Motors. The essay will describe F.W. Taylor s early work life and techniques of scientific
management and its success. It will then go on to discuss the production methods at Ford Motors
prior and post the application of the management principles along with their benefits and criticisms.

This would not only be advantageous for the employer but also the employee since it would result
in higher wages. Due to this, the worker s level of motivation and drive to do better would escalate
leading to overall productivity of the organization (Salimath and Jones, 2011, p.88).
Taylor furthermore emphasized on this method as it reduced the time taken between each activity
since each worker was limited to doing a precise task. Thus, the worker was able to complete the
job in the least possible time and reduce wastage. Along with improved efficiency, Taylor used
scientific management techniques to make sure proper utilization of resources is taking place and
wastage is being kept to a minimum (Salimath and Jones, 2011, pp. 85 86).
Taylorism can be seen as an evident feature in several production based industries especially
organizations specializing in automotive manufacturing. One of the key practitioners of Taylor s
management principles was Henry Ford, founder of Ford Motor Company.
Initially at Ford motors, production used to take place by keeping the vehicle at one position and
making the workers move in and about gathering the several parts together. This method
unfortunately was a very tedious and time consuming process. In view of this fact, Henry Ford
appointed Taylor to monitor the operations taking place. Ford applied the scientific management

Aromatic Substation
Aromatic substances are cyclic and planar molecules with resonances bonds that exhibit molecular
stability. Most aromatic substances are a derivative of a benzene ( aromatic hydrocarbon) ring. The
structure of aromatic substances is defined by the cylic overlapping sp2 hybridized atoms, figure 1.
Benzenerings are nonpolar, insoluble in water and very stable due to the delocalized pi electrons.
This stability of benzene rings means that no many reactions can occur with some aromatic
substances. There are a few substitution reactions in an aromatic substances replaces a hydrogen
within a functional group(s). Aromatic substation occurs when an electrophile replaces a hydrogen
on a benzene ring. In aromatic substation, the aromatic ring attacks an electrophilic molecule. This
causes the double bond between two carbons to break, leaving one carbon with the electrophilic
attachment and the other becomes a carbocation. Due to the carbocation, the aromatic ring is not
stable, and requires the replacement of that double bond. The nucleophile in the solvent will grab
the hydrogen on the carbon with the attached electrophile. The electrons from that hydrogen will

Clemson University
Clemson, USA jrapose@g.clemson.edu Abstract The Internet of Things (IoT) is a technology that
has transformed our daily lives because of its distributed and ubiquitous nature. Security and
privacy issues exist with the use of the IoT and must be addressed.
In this paper, I discuss some of the security challenges that the IoT architecture has to address. I also
compare the challenges that were inherited from the technologies related to the internet and those
that appear in IoT from present networks.
Keywords IoT, security, solution.
I.INTRODUCTION
The Internet of Things is an infrastructure that connects physical devices/objects to the internet and
not just computer devices, making it possible for a user to have remote access or control over that
object. IoT has the following three categories of objects
1.General objects having communication or processing capabilities embedded in them, for e.g.
smartphones.
2.Sensing and actuating objects that collect information about their environment and manipulate it
through remote access.
3.Data capturing and Data carrying objects that use technologies like NFC to communicate. [1]
The ubiquitous nature of the Internet of Things provides many benefits, however, the security and
privacy problems related with it has to be tackled. The distributed nature of technologies that IoT
relies on is prone to many security and privacy

The Pros And Cons Of The American Revolution
The American Revolution, although thought to be so, was not something that all the colonists of
America wanted to happen. The colonists fell under one of three opinions on independence: a
patriot, a loyalist, or a neutral. The patriots were completely done with Great Britain and wanted
independence. The loyalists wanted the colonies they lived in to remain a part of the glorious
British Empire. Lastly, the neutrals didn t know where they stood concerning independence, or
didn t care. Despite many arguments given by either side, patriot or loyalist, a copious amount of
colonists didn t have or want a side. The patriots and loyalists were both groups of people from
the wealthier parts of the colonies and the less prosperous colonists were usually neutrals. The
patriots and loyalists were constantly in a battle to gain more followers for their cause and
propaganda sprang up all over the colonies in the direction of the neutrals. The patriots were split
into two groups, moderate and radical, though they both wanted the same thing, independence from
Great Britain. The radical patriots waged a war between the colonies and their founder while the
moderate patriots would have rather sat down with the British and settled things verbally and
peacefully. Out of the Patriots though, more were radical than moderate, who were mostly
members of the colonies governments. Just after the French and Indian War, Great Britain was at
the top of the world, broke. The war had taken almost

Impact of Globalization on Business and Management Education
The business sector in India is highly promising in the present scenario. The impact of globalization
has changed the business procedure in India in terms of psychology, methodology, technology,
mindset work culture etc. Newer challenges, newer opportunities are day by day in front of Indian
industries, which are profitable and prospective.
The fundamental scope of doing business in India is lying with its people. The huge population of

scope has increased immensely for global ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Competitive forces are expected to take Indian industry out of inertia and place it on a dynamic
growth path. In this context, it is important to know how far economic liberalization and
globalization has succeeded in changing the market structure so as to allow more competitive free
play. Market competition is in turn expected to influence the performance of industry positively. It
is proposed to study changes in the market structure for different industries in terms of the number
of units, size structure and ownership patterns in the 1990s as compared with the 1980s, using unit
level data for the organized industry. This is to be followed up by a study of the performance of
these units / industries in terms of efficiency and productivity. A related question to be examined is
how the new economic environment has influenced the entry and exit of firms, their competitive
strategies, and their pricing behavior.
Reforms and the Corporate Sector
The corporate sector constitutes a dominant part of industry. Financial sector reforms along with the
development of the capital market are changing the structure of corporate financing. This has led to
a separation of ownership and the management and has given rise to the issue of corporate
governance, among others. Corporate governance essentially deals with the ways of governing the
corporations so as to improve their financial performance. The need for governance arises mainly

What Are The Rhetorical Techniques Used In Sicko By...
Sicko is a narrative created by Michael Moore that puts an spotlights on medical insurance in
America. The narrative gives an inside and out comprehension and examination of the endless
human services issues in America. A large part of these issues result from the defilement show in
the American medical coverage industry. The message that Michael Moore is attempting to get
crosswise over to his crowd is that of the everlasting status inside the American healthcare insurance
framework. Mr. Moore Sicko documentary was compelling because he incorporates two rhetorical
techniques which are pathos and logos. He thinks about and differentiate, questions American s
ethics, and offers meetings to get the watcher to agree with the contention with these techniques.
First, he uses pathos in his documentary by capturing the audience attention by comparing and
contrasting our health care to other countries who have universal healthcare like France, Britain,
Canada, and Cuda. Within a couple of scenes of the film Moore had demonstrated a man sowing
his own knee, a man who needed to choose which finger he needed to pay for to get settled, and a
79 year old man as yet attempting to pay for his remedies. This influences the watcher to express
sensitivity for the general population affected by medical coverage organizations. Poignancy is
Michael Moore s principle system to get his contention over. All through the documentary are
heartbreaking family stories that are used to influence the

Epic Hero Changes
Maya Angelou once said, I think a hero is any person really intent on making this a better place
for all people. This may be true for modern times, but texts throughout the ages prove the
characteristics and morals of heros have changed over the years. While reading British Literature,
one becomes familiar with four main categories of heroes: the Epic Hero, the Romantic Hero, the
Tragic Hero, the Postmodern Hero.
An Epic Hero is the first hero in British Literature. The most important task of an Epic hero is to

significant improvement after long term pharmacotherapy. Similar to many of the DBS studies,
effectiveness of tremor suppression was measured using a Clinical Rating Scale for Tremor to

European Exploration Motivation
European Exploration Motivations: Gold, God, and Glory Throughout the 15th and 16th centuries,
European exploration and expansion thrived. Portugal led the way in this movement of
exploration with their development of efficiently built ships known as caravels, seafaring devices
such as compasses and astrolabes, and cutting edge naval academies. Various European countries,
including Spain, England, France, etc., followed Portugal s example by utilizing their progressive
naval technology. These technological advancements led to the crossing of oceans and eventually
the circumnavigation of the world. These Portuguese sailing techniques were implemented by
explorers such as Christopher Columbus, John Cabot, Hernando Cortes, Francisco Pizarro, and
Bernal Castillo allowing them to travel by sea to places such as Africa, East Asia, the Caribbean,
and the Americas. These nations and explorers were persuaded to put in the time and effort to
complete these complex expeditions by three essential motivations. Financial gain, political
dignity, and religious expansion were fundamental motivators for the European Age of
Exploration. The accumulation of wealth for individuals as well as nations, propelled European
Exploration. For instance, Hernando Cortes travelled to Central America with a key motivation of
obtaining gold. This can be exemplified in The Dispatches of Hernando Cortes to Emperor
Charles V, 1519 1521, I and my companions suffer from a disease of the heart which can only

Public Education In The Film Waiting For Superman
There is an evident issue with the public schooling system in America today. Throughout the entire
country, kids are the victims of schools that fail to gift them with the knowledge that they need to
excel past high school. In lower class areas of the country, students are destined to become dropouts
because their educationsimply does not provide them a way out. In the film, Waiting for Superman,
director Davis Guggenheimclaims that schools are failing to meet beneficial education standards
for all students. Due to their demographic, children in lower class areas of the country do not have
access to the same educational opportunities that wealthier families receive. Throughout the film,
Guggenheim s use of music and pacing creates a powerful feeling of sympathy in the audience
towards the children that are not privileged to a better education because of their economic status.
By utilizing these devices, the film ultimately hopes to build on the audience s sympathy in order
to possibly ignite a change for the public education system in the United States. There are a variety
of ways in which music is used throughout this film, but the use of sad music and silence are the
two most important in terms of building a strong emotional appeal. By implementing these styles of
music, the film illustrates the emotional frustration within lower class students and parents who are
simply looking to find a beneficial education for their children. Melancholy music serves as an

When you think of the Vikings, chances are you think of horned helmets, raids, and bloody battles.
But on the other side of the spectrum, there are the women of Nordic culture. Women are mostly
thought of as looking like Viking warriors fighting alongside their men. But that was hardly the
case. In reality, women were important in many other ways. They were treated very differently
than other women in different European cultures at that time. The home lives of the women in
Nordic society were very important to the social acceptance of who they were. Who they were

Her children would then inherit the dowry as part of their estate ( Women ). Just as the dowry, the
woman did not fully become part of her husband s family when she married. She was a part of
her own family. If her husband mistreated her or her children, or was too lazy to be a sufficient
provider or even insult her family, those were grounds to divorce him. To do this, she must call in
witnesses. She must announce her divorce in front of said witnesses at her front door, then at their

with their mother in case of a divorce. It depended who the older children stayed with according
to status and wealth of the two families. The children still held their rights to inheritance, even
after divorce ( Women ). Divorce is a prime example of how women of this culture had it better
than many other cultures. What was expected of the female children was vastly different than
what was expected of the adults. Unlike most cultures where the boys attend school and the girls
learn housework, it is believed that neither attended school. Instead, boy s learned men s work
and girls did work alongside the females in their life. They learned to cook, garden, and take care

Yeats on Change and Stability, and How They...
The world is a place that is ever changing, yet somehow it always stays the same. There is a
saying, the more things change, the more they stay the same. Another goes like this: history has
a way of repeating itself. So does that mean that people can t learn from the mistakes of the past?
Certainly not. There are brilliant minds in this world that can visualize in what ways events have
gone wrong in history. They are able to learn the faults and strengths of other, older civilizations,
and build on those. Unfortunately, these minds are few and far between, and the rest of us are
left to fend for ourselves. There comes a time in every country/civilization s existence that a bad
leader takes the reins and things go south in a hurry. This is when declension of state is put into
effect, as Plato would have it. This rise and fall of civilization is something William Butler Yeats
was very familiar with. His love of history and the sciences were combined with a philosophy all
his own. His philosophy was that in all of the fields of history, art, personality, and society, there
are conflicting forces at work: change and stability. In each society, these two forces are at work,
and that can sometimes make things chaotic in the lives of the people in the society. These
forces don t even have to be a part of society; stability and change can be a part of everyday life.
Five poems of Yeats that portray the change in the world, and the stability too, are When You Are
Old, The Lake Isle

  • 2. The Most Important Thing You Remember About A Thesis... The most important thing to remember about a thesis statement is it gives the reader your opinion and you are entitled to your opinion. You are also giving the reader a new article to read and allow them to give feedback if necessary. This isn t new to me, for I ve done a thesis statement before and received good feedback from fellow classmates. What s different is all of us were focused on once topic and had to come up with our own thesis on that assigned topic. It worked out well. Thesis Statement Number 1: Judging A Book by the Cover People who jump to conclusions without prior knowledge should be aware of people s feelings and not make a big deal about it. It causes personal problems and judging can take a toll on people who are sensitive and want honest opinions. Today, there a re more than seven billion people in the world. Each and everyone of them are human and have a mind. They are entitled to their own opinion and have every right to express themselves. The hard truth is their opinion can be taken to a new level and be considered judging. Judging, or looking done on someone, is expressing how you feel about a topic in a negative manner. Whether is an artist s book, an authors book or a plate of food. These things are judge without any knowledge. Judging mainly goes to people s appearance, personality and interests. For example, a man named John looks down upon another man named Abel, even though John doesn t know Abel. This is a ridiculous ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Economic Development Office For The State Of Texas The summer of 2014, I interned at the Economic Development Office for the state of Texas. The office was tasked with preparing relocation incentives for companies in order to create jobs. The office was split into different departments totaling about 45 people. The office worked strictly under the Governor. One would answer the phone, Office of the Governor, Economic Development... Economic Development offices around the country came under repetitive criticism for behaving as governors slush funds. Essentially there are clear lines of imperative control from superior offices. The office was responsible for overseeing the economic development of the whole state. In other ways, the office directly contrasted Weber s definition. Since the office was able to distribute funds and abate taxes, it made incredible financial decisions for companies and the taxpayers of the state. Awards could not be given out based on a specific set of rules. There was careful consideration into a companies intentions, how they were prepared for the future, and if they fit the new model of businesses Texas wanted to attract. In this regard, the office did not always make systematic decisions. Those promoted were the best performing, most ambitious, and took initiative; only residue of a seniority system remained. A meritocracy, in direct opposition to a tenured hierarchy, opened a dichotomy between the older and younger generations. Under performers were let go regardless of tenure. On a ... • 5. The Los Angeles Area Is A Major Development Boom Introduction The Los Angeles area is currently undergoing a major development boom but it has not included enough affordable housing to to address housing shortages and great housing costs. Within the past few years the area has begun to address its severe urban sprawl issues by providing developers with density bonuses and improving the walkability of certain urban centers but this still has not done enough to keep pace with the housing demand. How can Los Angeles meet the housing needs of this extremely large and rapidly growing population in a sustainable fashion? The Los Angeles area doesn t need more sprawl that s for sure and the shear size of the city itself lends itself to a logical step: Urban Infill. What is Urban Infill? Urban infill is defined as new development that is sited on vacant or undeveloped land within an existing community, and that is enclosed by other types of development. The term urban infill itself implies that existing land is mostly built out and what is being built is in effect filling in the gaps. The term most commonly refers to building single family homes in existing neighborhoods but may also be used to describe new development in commercial, office or mixed use areas. I like the concept of the very reasonably priced Local Yokel . It is a three course meal containing locally sourced ingredients. I didn t order it this time, but my date did, with wine pairings. We started by splitting the House Smoked Salmon. I liked the smoked salmon itself, and the potato cake with goat cheese was quite delectable, but it was slightly rich together. Personally, I like the simple taste of smoked salmon by itself. With the cheese, I think it was too rich as a starter, so I did not finish it. Also, since they pre split it for us, we both got a relatively large portion. They also bring around a bread basket and let you choose from three different breads. The sourdough and spicy flat bread were awesome; I probably had five or six pieces of that flat bread over the course of dinner. The poppy seed wheat was also good, but my least favorite of the three. Since my date got the three courses as well, they brought out a chilled white shrimp soup for his appetizer after we finished the salmon. I tried a bite and it was pretty good, but I do not think I would order it in the future. His entrГ©e was a plethora of pork consisting of pork loin and barbecue pork belly. They were both exceptional. I had the George s Bank Scallops for my entree. The Leek and Bacon Risotto was simply amazing, possessing a enjoyable bacon flavor. His dessert course was a strawberry rhubarb cobbler with vanilla ice cream. He loved it so much that I only got a small bite, but it was really excellent. Arounnd this time was when there was more interactions between the Eastern and Western hemispheres of the world. These interactions had major impacts on the world as a whole at the time, both good and bad. During this time in the Atlantic world, European dominance and the demand for God, gold, and glory remained constant, while there were significant social changes in the Native American population and the attitude that native had towards the Europeans. An example of this desire would be how Columbus s initial thought upon meeting the natives was how they would be servant and were to find their gold. During the time period 1492 to 1750, the Age of Exploration was occuring causing many things to change socially due to the increased interaction between the two hemispheres. One changed that occured during this time was the decreasing Native American population. The reason for this change was largely due to exposure to western diseases that the natives had not grown used to, and also due to slaughtering and enslavement by the Europeans. An example of this is when the Arawak Indians were enslaved by the Spaniyards, who would work them to death and even kill them if they did not do what was asked. Another change was the attitude that the Native Americans had towards the Europeans. Initially, they were welcoming and even believed the Europeans were gods, but after a series of unpleasant encounters, this opinion changed. An example of this would be the backlash from Native Americans who would attack Europeans who attempted to colonize on their land. • 11. The Grapes Of Wrath And Jacob Lawrence s The Grapes Of Wrath During the Dust Bowl and Great Depression migration in the United States impacted the nation just as much as immigration did in the early twentieth century. The Dust Bowl was the time in which severe dust storms occurred in the South because the ground was so infertile from all the years of farming on it the wind would blow it away. Along with other agricultural and economic reasons it was during this time that many Southerners began their migration North in search of work. John Steinman s, The Grapes of Wrathand Jacob Lawrence s, The Migration Series demonstrate one characteristic of the American Dream, the pursuit of happiness, through the theme of family both during times of need and difficult situations. The mother figures had the job to take care of everyone and make sure the family remained together and one during their journey. One scene in The Grapes of Wrath the Joad family just arrived at a camp and Mama Joad was making food when all the kids around her came to see if they could be fed too. She knew she needed to take care of her family first and made sure that was a priority. After they were fed she extended her love and care to the children of the camp by offering them what was left of the remaining food. It was because of her nurturing persona she was able to find a way to feed the children as well her family. Some moments shown in this documentary are very personal David missing Posh, David dressing and having his head shaved. At certain stages there are commercial breaks. I think this is because different parts of David s life are shown at different stages so when we see another part of David s life we are intervened by a break. The makers of this documentary chose television as their medium because television is accessible to millions of people. Thyroidectomy Essay Discussion: Historically, the risks associated with major surgery to treat thyroid disease and the problems of adequate hormonal replacement deterred surgeons from performing total thyroidectomies. Although the procedure remains controversial it is increasingly being performed, and current indications include cancer, toxic and nontoxic multinodular goitre and Graves disease. (1, 3, 12) When the thyroid is resectable at presentation, total thyroidectomy is the current treatment of choice for malignant disorders of the thyroid and valuable surgical option for the management of several benign thyroid diseases, particularly among patients with an increased risk of recurrence. (1, 13 16) Total thyroidectomy is recommended for patients with Graves disease because it eliminates the source of the Graves disease autoantibodies; it eliminates the risk of disease recurrence; hypothyroidism is predictable and controllable by immediate thyroxine replacement; it alleviates any associated endocrine ophthalmopathy and the risk of malignancy among patients with Graves disease. • 16. Energy Sources Of Renewable Biomass I. INTRODUCTION As an abundant, inexpensive, and renewable as well as environmentally friendly (i.e. CO2 neutral) energy source, biomass energy has been a particular focus of researcher and policy makers as well as industries around the world (Chen, 2003). Renewable biomass presents an important research area for energy source, considering the current global crises of exhaustible sources of energy. Bioenergy is the 4th largest source of energy in the world, and it does not contribute to the global warming through emissions of CO2 or any other green house gases. Biomass pyrolysis has witnessed exponential growth in its research and has been investigated extensively in the last few decades, first in the form of fixed bed reactors and later in the form of moving bed reactors (fluidized bed, auger bed etc). As the combustion of solid biomass is analogous to the combustion of other solid fuels, such as coal and waste, essentially the same technology is applicable to all solid fuels, although modifications are required to handle the high content of moisture and volatiles typically associated with biomass fuels (Duffy Eaton, 2013). In this paper, which reviews the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of fixed/moving bed solid gas reactors, biomass pyrolysis, gasification and combustion has been the focus of the study. The author s complains about the difficulties of managing his strict vegan lifestyle are meant to highlight his dedication and determination, but can come off as whining. • 24. Effects of Human Capital on Maize Production in Ghana Essay Agriculture constitutes about one third of GDP and provides employment for about two thirds of the labor force in Sub Saharan Africa. Productivity growth in agriculture is therefore an important element for economic growth and development. Yet, growth in this sector has been slow. According to the World Bank (1989), agricultural growth for the continent from 1980 to 1989 averaged only 1.8% per year. Therefore, improving this growth rate is of increasing concern for both governments and international organizations (Pinckney 1995). Investing in the human capital base is regarded as one of the most effective ways to improve agricultural productivity (Nelson and Phelps, 1966; Romer, 1990; Bindlish and Evenson, 1997; Birdsall et al., 1999).... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Rivera (1998) argues that education, irrespective of the form, improves productivity to a very significant extent. 1.2 Problem Statement Agriculture is a very important sector in the Ghanaian economy. Although its contribution to GDP decreased from 43.5% in 1990 to 21.5% in 2013, it still remains a significant player in the economy of the country (Ghana Statistical Service 2008; ISSER 2011; CIA 2013). The agricultural sector employs about 60% of the workforce in Ghana and can therefore be regarded as the backbone of the Ghanaian economy (ISSER, 2011). Maize is the most important cereal crop produced in Ghana and it is also the most widely consumed staple food in Ghana (Morris et al., 1999). Maize accounts for 55% of grain output in the country. Maize is also an important component of poultry feed and to a lesser extent the livestock feed sector, as well as a substitute for the brewing industry. Although maize productivity has been increasing over the years, studies show that Ghanaian farmers are yet to produce enough to meet the nation s demand. Due to this, the worker s level of motivation and drive to do better would escalate leading to overall productivity of the organization (Salimath and Jones, 2011, p.88). Taylor furthermore emphasized on this method as it reduced the time taken between each activity since each worker was limited to doing a precise task. Thus, the worker was able to complete the job in the least possible time and reduce wastage. Along with improved efficiency, Taylor used scientific management techniques to make sure proper utilization of resources is taking place and wastage is being kept to a minimum (Salimath and Jones, 2011, pp. 85 86). Taylorism can be seen as an evident feature in several production based industries especially organizations specializing in automotive manufacturing. One of the key practitioners of Taylor s management principles was Henry Ford, founder of Ford Motor Company. Initially at Ford motors, production used to take place by keeping the vehicle at one position and making the workers move in and about gathering the several parts together. Most aromatic substances are a derivative of a benzene ( aromatic hydrocarbon) ring. The structure of aromatic substances is defined by the cylic overlapping sp2 hybridized atoms, figure 1. This stability of benzene rings means that no many reactions can occur with some aromatic substances. There are a few substitution reactions in an aromatic substances replaces a hydrogen within a functional group(s). Aromatic substation occurs when an electrophile replaces a hydrogen on a benzene ring. In aromatic substation, the aromatic ring attacks an electrophilic molecule. The loyalists wanted the colonies they lived in to remain a part of the glorious British Empire. Lastly, the neutrals didn t know where they stood concerning independence, or didn t care. Sicko is a narrative created by Michael Moore that puts an spotlights on medical insurance in America. The narrative gives an inside and out comprehension and examination of the endless human services issues in America. A large part of these issues result from the defilement show in the American medical coverage industry. The message that Michael Moore is attempting to get crosswise over to his crowd is that of the everlasting status inside the American healthcare insurance framework. Mr. Moore Sicko documentary was compelling because he incorporates two rhetorical techniques which are pathos and logos. He thinks about and differentiate, questions American s ethics, and offers meetings to get the watcher to agree with the contention with these techniques. First, he uses pathos in his documentary by capturing the audience attention by comparing and contrasting our health care to other countries who have universal healthcare like France, Britain, Canada, and Cuda. Within a couple of scenes of the film Moore had demonstrated a man sowing his own knee, a man who needed to choose which finger he needed to pay for to get settled, and a 79 year old man as yet attempting to pay for his remedies. This influences the watcher to express sensitivity for the general population affected by medical coverage organizations. Poignancy is Michael Moore s principle system to get his contention over. • 36. Epic Hero Changes Maya Angelou once said, I think a hero is any person really intent on making this a better place for all people. This may be true for modern times, but texts throughout the ages prove the characteristics and morals of heros have changed over the years. While reading British Literature, one becomes familiar with four main categories of heroes: the Epic Hero, the Romantic Hero, the Tragic Hero, the Postmodern Hero. An Epic Hero is the first hero in British Literature. The most important task of an Epic hero is to seek out fame and glory. They will shed their own blood, kill anyone in their way, and complete seemingly impossible tasks to earn honor from others. Another characteristic is their ability to boast about themselves. They face problems that one in modern times would not face, like fighting for a throne or killing another for a woman s love. A Postmodern Hero is not like that. They are not always courageous and normally their tasks and problems are the same a one s own. A reader can now see themselves much easier in the Postmodern Hero. This iconic style of hero can be found in Grendel by Gardner. In this story Grendel, the monster, has some monster like characteristics and some human like characteristics. He attempts to answer the question that many people are trying to solve to. This is Who am I and where do I fit in? In this way Grendel relates to the reader. Also, he is in search for love from his mother and tries to fill that void in her heart. All she knows how to do is hug him. She is incapable of communicating with him. In this way Grendel s problems can also be related to by the reader. Those in this time period seem to be more open to flaws. This society realizes that everyone makes mistakes and not all heros are perfect. It is okay to be scared to do something brave. It is okay to not look like others around you and it is okay to ... • 37. Tremor Case Study Essay MRgFUS effectiveness In 2012 Elias et al. presented the first clinical trial of MRgFUS application in ET treatment. The study was conducted at the University of Virginia on 15 ET patients who had significantly exacerbated symptoms of ET which complicated their normal activities and who did not show significant improvement after long term pharmacotherapy. Similar to many of the DBS studies, effectiveness of tremor suppression was measured using a Clinical Rating Scale for Tremor to calculate the total score (ranging from 0 to 160), hand subscore (primary outcome, ranging from 0 to 32), and disability subscore (ranging from 0 to 32), with higher scores indicating worse tremor. The Quality of Life in Essential Tremor Questionnaire was used to ... Tremor severity and functional impairment/disability were assessed at baseline, one week, one month, three months, and six months after the procedure. Eight of the eleven patients who completed the trail showed immediate and sustained improvements in tremors lasting to the 6 month evaluation period. These eight patients reported improvement in Parts A and B involving clinician/investigator rating of tremor severity with the patient writing, drawing spirals, pouring water, and other physical exam tasks. These eight patients also showed marked improvement in Part C of the CRST relating to patient reported disability due to tremor. However, treatment was not completed for the remaining three patients as MRgFUS failed to achieve a sufficient temperature, resulting in poor lesion and tremor capture. Furthermore, Chang et al. discovered neuroimaging changes where the lesions disappeared after 1 month; questioning the relationship between skull thickness and adequate heating to produce an effective lesion. Still, the authors concluded that these results demonstrated that MRgFUS is a safe, effective and less invasive surgical method for treating medication refractory ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. European Exploration Motivation European Exploration Motivations: Gold, God, and Glory Throughout the 15th and 16th centuries, European exploration and expansion thrived. Portugal led the way in this movement of exploration with their development of efficiently built ships known as caravels, seafaring devices such as compasses and astrolabes, and cutting edge naval academies. Various European countries, including Spain, England, France, etc., followed Portugal s example by utilizing their progressive naval technology. These technological advancements led to the crossing of oceans and eventually the circumnavigation of the world. These Portuguese sailing techniques were implemented by explorers such as Christopher Columbus, John Cabot, Hernando Cortes, Francisco Pizarro, and Bernal Castillo allowing them to travel by sea to places such as Africa, East Asia, the Caribbean, and the Americas. These nations and explorers were persuaded to put in the time and effort to complete these complex expeditions by three essential motivations. Financial gain, political dignity, and religious expansion were fundamental motivators for the European Age of Exploration. The accumulation of wealth for individuals as well as nations, propelled European Exploration. For instance, Hernando Cortes travelled to Central America with a key motivation of obtaining gold. This can be exemplified in The Dispatches of Hernando Cortes to Emperor Charles V, 1519 1521, I and my companions suffer from a disease of the heart which can only ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Public Education In The Film Waiting For Superman There is an evident issue with the public schooling system in America today. Throughout the entire country, kids are the victims of schools that fail to gift them with the knowledge that they need to excel past high school. In lower class areas of the country, students are destined to become dropouts because their educationsimply does not provide them a way out. In the film, Waiting for Superman, director Davis Guggenheimclaims that schools are failing to meet beneficial education standards for all students. Due to their demographic, children in lower class areas of the country do not have access to the same educational opportunities that wealthier families receive. Throughout the film, Guggenheim s use of music and pacing creates a powerful feeling of sympathy in the audience towards the children that are not privileged to a better education because of their economic status. By utilizing these devices, the film ultimately hopes to build on the audience s sympathy in order to possibly ignite a change for the public education system in the United States. There are a variety of ways in which music is used throughout this film, but the use of sad music and silence are the two most important in terms of building a strong emotional appeal. By implementing these styles of music, the film illustrates the emotional frustration within lower class students and parents who are simply looking to find a beneficial education for their children. • 40. Student Diversity At Our School When I went on stage during our weekly assembly and announced the start of affinity groups at our school, I was oblivious to the reaction of the hundreds of students in the audience. I was focused on speaking clearly and getting through my short speech, excited by what I was announcing. I didn t know that the few sentences I read off a piece of paper would change my perception of my school, my friends, and myself. Almost as soon as I got out of the assembly, before I even got to my next class, I began hearing people criticizing affinity groups. Many people were saying that this was segregating students, that we were being reverse racists , that there was no need for the groups or any discussions about race, that SDLC (the diversity club I... The only people who had had any experience with these groups were the people who had attended the SDLC conference, where we participated in our respective affinity groups. Soon after we announced the start of the groups, other students confronted me about the groups. Many people had an almost visceral reaction against the concept of the groups, having been taught for so long that it is wrong to single out people for their race. I understand why it was hard for people to acknowledge the need for these groups, as it meant acknowledging that our whole system had flaws; that there was still racism and prejudice within our community. This is not something people were comfortable discussing. My school s motto is Excellence and Honor and many students are incredibly smart and high achieving. We pride ourselves not just on our academic strength but on our honor code and ethical behavior. This made people particularly hesitant to pop the bubble of excellence and perfection by discussing things like racism. I d like to think that I am naturally an open minded and accepting person, but perhaps if I hadn t been to the SDLC conference and participated in the affinity groups there, I too would have been skeptical of the program. But on the other side of the spectrum, there are the women of Nordic culture. Women are mostly thought of as looking like Viking warriors fighting alongside their men. But that was hardly the case. In reality, women were important in many other ways. They were treated very differently than other women in different European cultures at that time. The home lives of the women in Nordic society were very important to the social acceptance of who they were. Who they were married to, if they practiced gender roles, and how they kept their family were all factors that make up how people viewed them. Ideally, women at this ... Just as the dowry, the woman did not fully become part of her husband s family when she married. She was a part of her own family. If her husband mistreated her or her children, or was too lazy to be a sufficient provider or even insult her family, those were grounds to divorce him. To do this, she must call in witnesses. She must announce her divorce in front of said witnesses at her front door, then at their bed ( Women ). At the time of a divorce, the woman would be given back her dowry that was brought with her at the start of the marriage (The Role of Women). Children automatically stayed with their mother in case of a divorce. It depended who the older children stayed with according to status and wealth of the two families. The children still held their rights to inheritance, even after divorce ( Women ). Divorce is a prime example of how women of this culture had it better than many other cultures. What was expected of the female children was vastly different than what was expected of the adults. Unlike most cultures where the boys attend school and the girls learn housework, it is believed that neither attended school. Instead, boy s learned men s work and girls did work alongside the females in their life. They learned to cook, garden, and take care of domestic animals and make clothing. • 42. Yeats on Change and Stability, and How They... The world is a place that is ever changing, yet somehow it always stays the same. There is a saying, the more things change, the more they stay the same. Another goes like this: history has a way of repeating itself. So does that mean that people can t learn from the mistakes of the past? Certainly not. There are brilliant minds in this world that can visualize in what ways events have gone wrong in history. They are able to learn the faults and strengths of other, older civilizations, and build on those. Unfortunately, these minds are few and far between, and the rest of us are left to fend for ourselves. There comes a time in every country/civilization s existence that a bad leader takes the reins and things go south in a hurry. This is when declension of state is put into effect, as Plato would have it. This rise and fall of civilization is something William Butler Yeats was very familiar with. His love of history and the sciences were combined with a philosophy all his own. His philosophy was that in all of the fields of history, art, personality, and society, there are conflicting forces at work: change and stability. In each society, these two forces are at work, and that can sometimes make things chaotic in the lives of the people in the society. These forces don t even have to be a part of society; stability and change can be a part of everyday life. Five poems of Yeats that portray the change in the world, and the stability too, are When You Are Old, The Lake Isle ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
