Pros And Cons Of The 18th Amendment
The 18th amendment, or the prohibition law was a good and a bad thing for America in many ways.
Prohibition was enacted to stop the derotation and violence of men against their wife and kids with the
use of alcohol, and many people thought that alcohol was an ungodly corrupted thing in America
which is why the 18th amendment was enacted to try to eliminate and dangers of alcohol. Alcohol was
prohibited in many states before it became a law in the 1920 s for the whole state. Even though the
government and women enacted the 18th amendment to prohibit alcohol to make things better in the
US only made things worse and some things good that America s wouldn t even know would
happen. After America saw what this 18th amendment was doing to the country they saw that it was
silly to prohibit alcohol in the first place just to cause a lot of problems in the future which America
did unintentionally. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Of course it would seem like a good idea to prohibit alcohol because nobody really saw what the cons
of this law would cause to America later on as time goes

The Job Of Early Years Foundation Stage Class Teacher
It is with great interest and enthusiasm I apply for the job of Early Years Foundation Stage Class
Teacher.
After extensive and varied experience of working throughout St Michaels Catholic Primary School
and Cavendish Primary School, I would like to continue my career as a Foundation Stage, Class
Teacher.
My current position, working as a full time Reception Class Teacher requires excellent communication
with children, other teachers, child care professionals and parents who often come from diverse
cultural backgrounds.
Patience and sensitivity are vital when communicating with adults and children in the school setting
and these qualities, I believe, are my strengths. My work as a Class Teacher and a Subject Leader

I record both, short and long observations of the children and alongside their drawings and
photographs, collate a learning journal, which is then shared with their parents. This allows me to plan
activities that interest and challenge the children and set the next steps for each child. This also
encourages parents to work in close partnership with the school. I undertake home visits each year.
These visits enable me to participate in the positive development of home school links. I also work in
close partnership with the school s SENCO and outside agencies, and so I am aware of children s
varying needs from special education needs to those who may be gifted and talented. I am familiar
with children s IEP s and the reviewing of their targets as I am involved in entering assessments into
Classroom Monitor, the online assessment tool.
Every half term, the children complete a summative assessment task, which I record on Classroom
Monitor and on our half termly trackers. I then use this data to track the progress of my children and
create an action plan to identify the next steps in learning for children. I use the information from case
studies to inform my future planning for the child. Due to the recent changes in the EYFS and EY
Profile, I summarise the Best Fit judgment concerning the age and stage that a child is working within.

Cream Vs Ointment
WEEK 1
What is the meaning of sustained release on medication bottle?
Oxford University Press Dictionary tells us that sustained release means denoting a drug preparation
in a capsule containing numerous tiny pellets with different coatings that release their contents steadily
over a long period.(OxfordLivingDictionary,2017)
What is the difference between a cream and an ointment?
A cream is a semisolid and comes in both aqueous and oily bases. It absorbs into the skin. An example
would be benzoyl perioxide. The ointment is similar to a cream, but it does absorb into the skin it
protects it locally. It can have soothing, astringent, or systemic effects. An example of an ointment
would be neosporin.

Herman Melville s Bartleby The Scrivener
Bartleby the Scrivener delves into the life of a worker at a New York City Law firm. Herman Melville
provides a drab and bleak outlook on the conditions of labor and mental state of the workers at the
firm. Though the story can be seen as a depiction of the isolation and lack of passion found in big city
labor, I believe that Melville provides much more in his writing. Within the details provided in the
story, he manages to forge a metaphor for the power of transcendental ideals such as self reliance and
choice within a society. He illustrates a culture run not by one s own beliefs, but rather the generalized
other and people plagued by authoritarian ideals. By the end of the tale of Bartleby and his influence
within the firm Melville strives to change society by informing the reader of the importance of non
conformity and belief in one s ideals, but also the danger of following through with that in society.
Melville initially creates a setting that adds a sense of desolation and dreariness within the office, as
shown with the unobstructed view of a lofty brick wall, black with age and everlasting shade. This
provides a general outlook on the law firm as a place of sadness, routine work, and isolation. The idea
of being surrounded by wall also further depicts a sense of being physically trapped within their
office, and possibly symbolically in their job or capitalist culture. In addition to the bleak atmosphere
at the office, the workers at the firm are people who have

Assignment Title:
Operations Management Defined and in Context
Operations Management has evolved over many years and is now considered a critical function in any
business, as supported by J.R Meredith, operations is critical to success in today s economy ( P35,
Meredith 1992). Businesses need to have faster production, cheaper prices, better quality products and
fast delivery to be competitive. How an operations manager manages the production of goods or
services effects how competitive the offering and how successful the business will then go on to be. In
this assignment I am going to use Nestle and Heathrow airport as examples ... Show more content on

An operations manager that has no strategy or tactics to be the most effective and efficient they can
be, will just fail in any line of business today. There has to be strategy and tactics applied to the 5
basic Performance objectives (Slack et al, 2010 p40) as examples here we can compare between
Nestle and Heathrow. Both highly successful businesses in their industries and truly lead the way in
operations control and management. Both companies are likely to want to achieve similar goals of
customer satisfaction and to remain competitive in their arena, let s look at the kind of things that they
do to achieve their performance objectives based around Slacks ideas.
First of all let s look at the process for both businesses on a simple scale as I see it.
So what is involved at each stage and how does the operations manager ensure that the objectives of
the business are being met.
Quality Wanting to get things right for the customer, no errors.
Heathrow need to ensure that passengers have a smooth run from arrival to departure but also then that
the airplanes are able to run on time and limit delays. Buses run from the car parks regularly to get

Tl 500 Research Paper
he TL500 Samsung Digital Camera Top Notch Low Light Photography in a Small Package
Photography magazines first spied the Samsung TL500 in the Photography Marketing Association
trade show in Anaheim earlier this year. Since then, it s become the top seller on Amazon and B H,
and the many qualities of this model intrigued me, photography lover that I am. I have been using one
for over a month now, composing shots and shooting everything that comes before me, and I have to
admit that experience has been quite special. Let me get in deeper and try to explain why this
Samsung digital camera is a winner. The asking price for the TL 500 is $410 at Amazon and other
major online retailers. Anyone who pays attention to camera specs, will recognize that this Samsung
digital camera uses the exact same size of sensor 1/1.7 as Canon s well respected S90, and the same
minimum aperture size of 2.0 too. What this means for me is, that I ll never have to worry about low
light photography ever again. And I especially like the way the lens is an ultra wide 24mm. Who
would believe that the TL 500 s maximum aperture size was a ludicrous F/1.8? ... Show more content

flexibility in screen positioning they give you with swivel and tilt. The TL500 brings you the full

Reflective Commentary On Alison Bechdel s Fun Home
Creative Response Reflective Commentary
I reworked Daniel Defoe s Roxana in the graphic novel style of Alison Bechdel s Fun Home. Initially,
the reason I chose the two novels was to see how well the oldest text on the course could be adapted
into the newest. Interestingly the texts proved to be quite similar in narrative; both are versions of
autobiography (although one fictional and one true), both feature a retrospective first person, self
conscious narrator (Booth 155), and both centre around a female protagonist deviating from societal
norms of the time. Fittingly enough Roxana also mentions her father in the beginning, although she
leaves him dead quite quickly. Adapting a novel into a graphic novel is a drastic stylistic change, and
my biggest concern was to keep my adaption steadily tied with the two texts, whilst trying not to get
too carried away in the creative process.
I based my process of making the comic on an interview with Alison Bechdel, where she explains how
she planned the text in Adobe Illustrator, sketched and inked by hand, and finally rendered the panels
digitally ( Alison Bechdel ). Like Bechdel, I relied extensively on Google images for various details of

The italicised words and German capitalization gets lost in the all caps form of the graphic novel, yet
something lingers in terms of autonomy of the author. It has a disregard of normal stylistic
considerations affected not only by Defoe as a writer but also a progress towards a more factual prose
in the late seventeenth century (Watt 105). Nowadays, the fixed structure of grammar allows for little
waywardness in format, apart from in the graphic novel. Like Defoe, the individual artist has a certain
freedom of choice, affected only by general conventions, of where to place the text and how to guide
the reader it is an interesting case of a rare anarchic individuality in

Trail Of Tears Dbq
The Trail of Tears was a series of relocations of the Native American people by the United States
government in 1832. Although a very controversial idea, president Andrew Jackson pushed for the
Indian Removal Act of 1830 which allowed the relocation of the Native Americans from their
homeland to Indian Territory of present day Oklahoma (O Brien). The Trail of Tears had a negative
impact on the Native American people, while benefiting the United States with a time of economic
prosperity and growth. Around 1800, many factors came into play that brought about the Indian
Removal Act. For starters, the invention of the cotton gin in 1790 revolutionized the cotton industry
creating an effective and efficient technique for large scale farming. (O Brien) Purchasing the Native
American land would allow cheap and abundant soil for the expansion of agriculture into the South
(Sansing 59). As well as expanding the business of agriculture, the United States government wanted
to expand their territory South towards the Mississippi River, while building a territorial wall from the

Domestic Preparedness Cycle Essay
The Homeland Security Bill directly impacts the domestic preparedness cycle because emergency
management became a primary duty of the Department of Homeland Security (Cordner, 2016). In
addition, the newly formed federal agency created a six point agenda that identified specific goals,
which directly contribute to domestic preparedness cycle (Cordner, 2016). Let us examine these goals
and identify how they relate to the domestic preparedness cycle starting with prevention. Some of the
initial six goals created by the Department of Homeland Security directly contribute to the prevention
phase of domestic preparedness cycle. The goals of increasing overall preparedness for catastrophic

more psychological story of a woman who tries to deal with a childhood trauma, namely the death of
her friend , but there are some aspects in which the stories are similar. Both texts have an open ending,

The Turn of the Screw can be read as a real ghost story: in this case, the ghosts are real and the story
really is about good and evil. This does not particularly mean that the governess is mentally stable,
because she still has her issues (like the fact that she falls in love easily), but it would explain her
protecting behavior towards the children. In this reading, Miles s death is interpreted as a consequence
of the governess s failure of protecting the children: she was unable to shield him from Peter Quint s
evil. In the psychological reading, the governess is mentally unstable and hallucinates the appearance
of the ghosts. In fact, this seems to be a plausible reading of the story, taking all the arguments of the
governess s unreliability in account. That way, the hallucinations are a consequence of her isolation
and sexual frustration. Miles s death is then interpreted as the governess (accidentally?) choking the
boy to death. Death by Landscape can be interpreted in the same ways: the one in which the narrator is
reliable and Lois innocent, or the one in which the narrator is unreliable and Lois killed Lucy. The
story does contain some arguments that Lois killed Lucy: the gap at the moment of Lucy s

Essay on The Principle of Separate Corporate Personality
The Principle of Separate Corporate Personality
The principle of separate corporate personality has been firmly established in the common law since
the decision in the case of Salomon v Salomon Co Ltd[1], whereby a corporation has a separate legal
personality, rights and obligations totally distinct from those of its shareholders. Legislation and courts
nevertheless sometimes pierce the corporate veil so as to hold the shareholders personally liable for
the liabilities of the corporation. Courts may also lift the corporate veil , in the conflict of laws in order
to determine who actually controls the corporation, and thus to ascertain the corporation s true
contacts, and closest and most real ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The veil of incorporation can be described as being the separation between a company and its
members. Due to the separate legal status of a company from its members this is usually very strictly
maintained. However, there are certain circumstances when the courts will deny the people who run
the company the advantage of hiding behind the corporate veil. In these instances the veil of
incorporation is said to be pierced or lifted , i.e. the barrier between a company and its members is
removed so there is no legal separation between them. There instances are however, difficult to predict
as the reasons depend on the judges interpretation of fairness or policy or of how a particular statute
should be interpreted.
In the leading case of Salomon v Salomon Co Ltd, Salomon incorporated his boot and shoe repair
business, transferring it to a company. He took all the shares of the company except six, which were
held by his wife, daughter and four sons. Part of the payment for the transfer of the business was made
in the form of debentures (a secured loan) issued by the company to Salomon. Salomon transferred the
debentures to Broderip in exchange for a loan. Salomon defaulted on payment of interest on the loan
and Broderip sought to enforce the security against the company. Unsecured creditors tried to put

Zen In The Art Of Archery Summary
Zen in the Art of Archery, by Eugen Herrigel describes the ritualistic arts of discipline and focus that
the Zen religion focuses around. In this book, Herrigel describes many aspects of how archery is, in
fact, not a sport, but an art form, and is very spiritual to those in the east. The process he describes
shows how he overcame his initial inhibitions and began to look toward new ways of seeing and
understanding. In the beginning of the book Herrigel tells us that he is writing about a ritual and
religious practice, whose aim consists in hitting a spiritual goal, so that fundamentally the marksman
aims at himself and may even succeed in hitting himself. (Herrigel p. 4) Through his studies, the
author discovers that within the Zen ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Let go and enlightenment will come to you. This is the same underlying concept that Zen and
Buddhism rely on. If one focuses too much on meditation then he will never actually clear your head
and reach the blissful goal of enlightenment. His master explains this as, The right art is purposeless,
aimless! The more obstinately you try to learn how to shoot the arrow for the sake of hitting the goal,
the less you will succeed in the one and the further the other will recede. (Herrigel p. 31) So, for
Herrigel to learn the art of archery he must cease to strive towards hitting the target and stop grasping
at his goal. Instead he must focus only on the moment and let the goal come to him.
As Herrigel spent more time with his master he learned more and more about the Zen ways of
thinking. Throughout his time there, his master taught him time after time that it is important to be in
the moment when the moment is happening. To reach your goal you must allow yourself to become
part of it and not focus on one individual aspect. The right frame of mind for the artists is only reached
when the preparing and the creating, the technical and the artistic, the material and the spiritual, the
project and the object, flow together without breaks. (Herrigel p. 43) All of your actions up to reaching
your goal should flow from you as if without effort and as part of your self. Is it I who draw the bow,
or is it the bow that draws me into the state of highest tension? Do

Canada s Immigration System Act
On June 28, 2012, the Protecting Canada s Immigration System Act (Bill C 31) took effect. This act
was put in place to bring further reforms to the asylum system, add measures to address human
smuggling, and add the requirement to include biometric data as part of a temporary resident visa,
work permit, and study permit application. These changes were claimed to help the system to function
better, cut down wait time, make the process faster, screen applicants better, and to prevent needless
complications. This resulted in many changes to Canada s asylum system. There were four changes
made to the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada (IRB). The first change was replacing the
Basis of Claim (BOC) form with the Personal Information Form (PIF). This change meant that people
who make a refugee claim at an office in Canada must submit a completed BOC during their
eligibility interview. If they made a refugee claim at a port of entry then they must submit their BOC
to the IRB no later than 15 days after their claim is referred to the IRB. Another change made was that
the hearings at the (IRB) would be conducted by public servant decision makers rather than people
appointed by the Governor in Council (GIC). Also, hearings for most claimants would be held no later
than 60 days after the refugee claim is referred to the IRB. And finally, for claimants from designated
countries of origin, their hearings would be held no later than 45 days after referral to the IRB for

Impact Of Green Supply Chain Management On Industry,...
This paper investigates the impact of green supply chain management on industry, consumer
perception and environment. Through research into multiple companies and case studies, a distorted
perception among large corporations shows a historic struggle to find a balance between profit and
sustainability. However, the potential long term effects of the lack of environmental courtesy cannot
be undone and therefore must be carefully engineered. Multi billion dollar automotive corporations
such as Hyundai and Toyota will be discussed and studied in depth to conclude the innovative changes
contributed in the automotive industry resulting in maximum efficiency in lean and green production.
Additionally, while studying these companies, the overall question of whether intentional sustainable
practices provide increased customer satisfaction and comfort is answered through a survey given to
100 random people. In this small sample, it was found that 33% of consumers care about green
business practices in automotive production but only 8% saw an increase in value because of it.

Essay Monotheism vs. Polytheism
Monotheism and polytheism are two very different belief systems. Monotheism is the belief in one
god and polytheism is the belief in more one than one god. The concept of morality can and does exist
within cultures that have only one god, as well as cultures that have multiple gods. Without morality,
the world would be a place of extreme chaos and pandemonium. However, the foundation for morality
within polytheistic religions is quite contradictory to the foundation for morality with monotheistic
religions. Morality within polytheism is somewhat inconsistent and relative; whereas in monotheism,
morality becomes more consistent and absolute. Morality exists throughout all cultures and religions
of the world in some shape or form. In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, the foundations for morality in polytheism and monotheism are quite different.
In polytheism the foundation for morality seems inconsistent and relative. Polytheistic religions have
no ultimate reality or god to set a standard for morality that all the followers must obey. Instead, each
of the many gods could have their own set of standards for morality. The inconsistency of morality
could theoretically lead one to be faced with the dilemma of which god is correct. Let s suppose one is
having an extramarital affair and is not sure if she should continue the affair or stop. Should she pray
to the goddess of lust and passion, to the god that is all knowing or to the god of family and
relationship? Not only does the inconsistency of morality standards cause followers to be faced with
choosing which gods to embrace, but also cause them to be faced which god is appropriate to pray for
moral guidance on different subjects. The notion that each of the multiple gods can set their standards
for morality, allows for the follower to circumstantially pick and choose which god to follow. It is
possible for a follower to be circumstantially selective because they do not have to answer to one
specific god. One can choose to follow a certain god because that particular god s set of morals allows
them to fulfill some desire or need that would otherwise not fulfilled under other

Appropriate Curriculum For Young Children
The debate about appropriate curriculum for young children generally centers on two options: free
play and basic activities vs. straight academics (which is what many kindergartens across the country
have adopted, often reducing or eliminating time for play). A new report, Lively Minds: Distinctions
between academic versus intellectual goals for young children, offers a new way to look at what is
appropriate in early childhood education.
The report was written by Lilian G. Katz, professor emerita of early childhood education at the
University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, where she is on the staff of the Clearinghouse on Early
Education and Parenting. She is past president of the National Association for the Education of Young
Children and the first president of the Illinois Association for the Education of Young Children. Katz
is currently the editor of the online peer reviewed trilingual early childhood journal Early Childhood
Research Practice, and she is the author of more than 100 publications about early childhood
education, teacher education, child development and the parenting of young children.
In her report, published by the nonprofit group Defending the Early Years, Katz says that beyond free
play and academics, another major component of education (indeed for all age groups) must be to
provide a wide range of experiences, opportunities, resources and contexts that will provoke,
stimulate, and support children s innate intellectual dispositions. As

Habitat Mitigation Case Study
4. In what ways do stakeholders involved in habitat mitigation interact? The major stakeholders
involved in habitat mitigation include non governmental organization and specifically, non profit
environmental organizations, the government and governmental organizations, and the public. Non
profit organizations often rely on the public as a workforce source. For Friends of the Alameda

Because government organizations are the stakeholders with the majority of power, they play a pivotal
role in conservation efforts. The site at Alameda Point has been greatly influenced by the government
and government organizations. The United States Navy, which owned the property at Alameda Point
until 1992, had participated in tern conservation. However, the Navy hindered the efforts to make the
site into a wildlife refuge, by refusing to transfer the site to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The
transfer refusal was mainly about site contaminants, which the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service did not
want to accept responsibility for due to the fact that the Navy has a much larger budget than the Fish
and Wildlife Service. The Navy later solicited the Department of Veterans Affairs, who needed
modernized services for veterans in the San Francisco Bay Area, and the transfer occurred in June of
2014. This resulted in 512 acres being set aside as a wildlife reserve, but without the protection that a
national wildlife refuge entails (Feeney, pers comm, 2015). Although government organizations may
serve to hinder conservation efforts, they can also play a major role in collaborating with non profit

The Suburban Public School District Essay
Summary of the Case The Suburban Public School District (SPS) is a relatively small district. The
student population has a total of about 11,000 students divided between six elementary schools, two
middle schools, and two high schools. Diversity is not a problem, since the community represents
more than twenty five countries around the world. However, the change readiness of all stakeholders
will be tested due to the district administrators decision of transforming the foreign language
curriculum. From four foreign languages, only English and Spanish will be instructed within a two
years period. This change has created the necessity of re training or let go educators due to need of a
reduction in force (RIF). Nevertheless, the SPS relies on a big and well structured administrative team
who successfully supports every school. The students of the SPS are committed to their success.
Evidence of the academic achievement is that around 80% of the SPS graduate students pursue a
higher education certification or career. There is one public university, one private university, and one
junior college within the community. Additionally, few technological companies are settling in the
zone, which rises the need of skilled workers. These companies are ready to help the SPS in their task
of preparing students with the technological skills needed for those future jobs. All schools in SPS
passed the state tests. However, they had identified a challenge. The students

How Does Bloor Present The Theme Of Tangerine Change...
Our first instinct when change is near to intertwining with our lives is to run away from the monster
that might turn our lives around in seconds. Nevertheless, Edward Bloor tackles this belief in his novel
Tangerine with his own unique perspective, that change could result to a new start or adventure if we
are willing to accept it into our lives. The novel Tangerine follows the perspective of Paul Fisher:an
aspiring soccer star, the supposedly imperfect younger brother of golden boy Erik Fisher, and legally
blind. Most people would assume being blind is Paul s worst burden, but with Paul moving to
Tangerine,Florida to be in the shadows of his older football star destined brother yet again, who in
reality is a bully, might just top Paul s problem ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The evidence is present through these two quotes: At this spot, we cut a slit into the rough lemon tree,
set a new type of bud inside, and close the split up with tape. Now we have turned the tree into
something else(164). The second quote is I thought about my own mom and dad,and I looked him
right in the eye. Then they are lying to you. They are telling you a story just so they can keep you
scared(251). The first quote happened at the grove where Luis was talking about how the Gold Dawn
tree is formed, and the bud represents Paul. Paul went through the the same process as the bud to form
the Golden Dawn tree. Paul was first placed in this new town he wasn t familiar with, but eventually
he settled in as one of the town s inhabitants. Also, Paul learned the truth in Tangerine, so he sealed his
old past away, where he was fearful and clueless, and he blossomed into someone completely
different. The second quote was when Paul confronted the young boy after the boy tried to warn him
about the rumored gator lurking in the pond. Paul was angry and let his emotions loose;when the boy
told Paul that his parents would never tell him stories to make him scared. It was an infuriating
situation for Paul to see that this boy was making the same mistakes he did when he was younger,
believing in his parent s lies, and he ended up shouting at the boy that all those stories were lies to

The Power Of Friendship In The Kite Runner By Khaled Hosseini
Many people will walk in and out of your life but only true friends will leave footprints in your heart
Eleanor Roosevelt. What is true friendship, what is friendship for that matter? Webster dictionary says
friendship is a person whom one knows and with whom one has a bond of mutual affection, typically
exclusive of sexual or family relations, the emotions or conduct of friends; the state of being friends.
But how powerful can this nine letter word really be? In The Kite Runner a book written by Khaled
Hosseini it shows the true power of friendship, all the ups and downs, and how two friends battle love,
trust, betrayal, and friendship. Amir is the son of a wealthy and well known man in the northern area
of Kabul. Amir develops a friendship with one of his servants named Hassan. From the being you
could see the love that Hassan has for Amir especially from his first word, which was Amir.
Amir and Hassan enjoyed doing everything together. However, Amir never considered Hassan and
him as friends. The reasons for this in many ways are because Amir is a Pashtun and Hassan is a
Hazara. But, they were kids; they fed from the same breast and they learned to crawl together, nothing
was going to change that. Amir spent most of the first twelve years of his life with Hassan. They used
to play hide and seek, cops and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Machinery Hall covered 125,000 square yards. In this image it looks very elaborate, garish, and

In the Machinery Halls, heavy industry was represented by displays on mining, iron and steelwork,
armaments manufacture, shipbuilding, pumping and motive power machinery, electricity generation,
as well as textile and printing machinery. Many displayed objects were instruments of war such as a
gun carried on the backs of three dummy men. Warship firms displayed models of their scouts,
destroyers, armed cruisers and torpedo boats. War relics included an astrolabe of 1578, the barge of
the great Napoleon, the flat bottomed boats which the French used when they captured Algiers, and
some of the small cannons used on the gunwales of eighteenth century warships.
Numerous modern inventions were also featured. The steel and iron industry displayed flywheels, and
suction producers, while railway companies made a model of a Scenic Railway outside. The place of
honor in the French hall was taken by the great Pont à Mousson blast furnace. The London Electricity
Companies demonstrated modern cooking with electric range and kettles, and showed sewing
machines.
One of the great luxuries in the building was a free rest room, in the middle of which was a pleasant
fountain. The Franco British Exhibition: illustrated review commented on this idea: Remembering the
general comfortless ness of the grounds, it was a stroke of real genius to put that oasis of rest in the
centre of the grim and dour Machinery Halls.

Lord Of The Flies Personality Analysis Essay
LOFT Personality Analysis Essay All our personalities compare to a character from Lord of the Flies,
and I found myself to be an ENFP or an idealist; someone most comparable to Simon. An ENFP or an
idealist personality displays characteristics of being extroverted, intuitive, feeling and perceiving
which. Furthermore, passionately concerned with positive improvement, being kind, warm,
sympathetic, distracted and motivated were all trait described in the personality test for the ENFP. Due
to our selflessness, how introverted and extroverted we are, and how we can think both logically and
emotionally, makes Simon and I most similar.
The idealist is often trying to help others, as well as the world, enhancing it in any way they can, as
stated by the personality test. Simon displays this need to help others through many of his actions
within the book, as Simon thought this...the beast was harmless and horrible; and the news must reach
the others as soon as possible. He started down the mountain and his legs give beneath him (Lowry
147). In this passage, Simon is hurt yet he wants to help resume order amongst the boys, by
eliminating the fear that controls them, which show he has a vision for a better world. Then, amid the
roar of bees in the afternoon sunlight, Simon found for them the fruit they could not reach, pulled off
the choicest from up in the foliage, passed them back down to the endless, outstretched hands (Lowry
56). Similarly, Simon also is the only one that

Symbols and Symbolism in Young Goodman Brown Essay
Within the Christian faith, there lies the belief that all mankind are born sinners and through their faith
can seek redemption. This belief can be found in more detail within the Christian text known as the
Bible. An example of this can be found in the Genesis chapter of the Bible which portrays that even
the very first Humans ever to be created in God s image, named Adam and Eve, defied God despite his
pre emptive warnings not too because of their natural tendency as humans to sin. Not only can one
chose with their own will to disobey God but one s faith can be easily swayed by the evils of the world
therefore sin can forever bind them in chains for eternity. Young Goodman Brown, by Nathaniel
Hawthorne, reveals a similar ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hawthorne uses this quote as an underlying statement that it wasn t just his wife that held him back
from his rendezvous with the Devil, but also his Faith in God. Hawthorne meant for the reader to
make the connection between Goodman s Wife, Faith and Goodman s faith in God for which both
attempt to sway Goodman from following the path the Devil intends for him.
Hawthorne in essence, portrayed Goodman as proof of the nature of evil in man by showing how
easily even a young dedicated Puritan can easily be influenced by a complete stranger. This stranger
was symbolically the Devil among men in this text. Hawthorne begins introducing the Devil
immediately as trying to sway Goodman to follow him on a long journey. By leaving his wife, Faith to
begin the journey, Goodman Brown was symbolically leaving his faith in God and entering a forsaken
ground by following the Devil. The fact that Goodman Brown left with no regard for his wife Faith s
warning, symbolized the lack of regard for his own faith in God and his fellow human race. This
simple disregard that Goodman Brown showed was evidence of the easily persuaded ability of man to
choose sin over good.
The man that Goodman Brown encountered on his journey symbolized the devil in the text which
strongly influenced him to just about give up his faith in God. The Devil disguised as a fellow traveler
(266) tried to influence Goodman Brown by

Cathy Davidson is an English and humanities professor at Duke University. She has published over
twenty books, many dealing with technology and education. In Project Classroom Makeover, she
argues that the way the United States teaches students is not preparing them for the skills needed for
success in the twenty first century. To illustrate her point, Professor Davidson presents the historical
development of the educational system in the U.S. She differentiates high standards from

In the farming society of the early 1800 s, education was not possible for many children. Horace
Mann, a farm boy himself and an early advocate for educational reform, saw the deficiencies in the
educational system. He pushed for common schools that would retain local control, be co educational
and revolve around the agricultural year. Mann s ideas began to be adopted around the country in the
second half of the nineteenth century. By the start of the twentieth century, mandatory public
schooling was the norm. This was the height of the industrial revolution. As Davidson notes in Project
Classroom Makeover , Public Education was seen as the most efficient way to train potential workers
for labor in the newly urbanized factories (197). Schools began to work like an assembly line with a
focus on efficiency, attention to detail, memorization of facts and staying on task. Curriculum became
standardized and states began to replace the local management of education. Critically thinking
outside the box was less valued. Regardless of ability, children started school at the same age and were
moved through their education in a regulated process. By the middle of the twentieth century, as the
United States became a world power, the educational focus had shifted from elementary education to
the attainment of high school and college degrees. A goal of education was to produce leaders. The
period after WWII

What Does Genetic Inheritance May Influence One- Behaviour
Biological level of analysis Explain how genetic inheritance may influence one behaviour, with
reference to one relevant research study. Genetic inheritance is genes that are gain from parents or
ancestors, usually from generation to generation. Genes define characteristics in a person and are
passed down through generations; however, the environment can encourage these characteristics.
Genetic inheritance does play a role in one s behaviour also their environment. Researchers are not
quite sure on whether if genetic influence or the environment impacts one s behaviour the most.
Research done on families and how the family interacted with each other each day shows genetic
influence. The study to aid the relationship between genetic influence and conduct is the Minnesota
Twins study, which meant to watch the impact of environment and genetic influence upon a large
number of variables which included: brainpower remainder, identity and word related/professional
perks, by exploring the connection between these elements in twins raised separated utilizing MZTs as
a control. Regardless of these shortcomings the study does demonstrate a solid connection between
genetic influence and insight, proposing that genetic influence has a generous impact on conduct.

When comparing the movie Troy, directed by Wolfgang Petterson, and The Iliad, written by Greek
poet Homer we can clearly see that although Petterson has made an excellent film he has clearly left
out certain aspects of the Iliad which really define the story.
Both versions portray the Trojan War between Greece and Troy, Achilles killing Hector and King
Priam visiting Achilles to ask for the body of his son Hector back. However both versions do not
portray accurate versions of the fight between Menelaus and Paris, nor do they correctly explain why

who would get to keep Helen. Just before Menelaus can deliver the death blow, Paris crawls to his
brother s feet and hides behind him in cowardice. Hector then delivers the death blow to Menelaus
which sparks of the beginning of the fighting. As the fighting progresses on the battle field we see
clips of Achilles and Briseis and we see that they have begun to fall in love. Achilles makes plans to
return home with Briseis and his beloved cousin Patroclus. As dawn approaches on the battle field we

Essay On Self Confidence
Self confidence is the foundation of success, achievement, and happiness. Unfortunately, the
foundation of self confidence can become shaky and unstable if someone that you look up to as a role
model hurts your self esteem and courage. One of the biggest role models in my life used to be my
first club soccer coach. He seemed brilliant, passionate, and willing to work with my team. This man
soon became the complete opposite of what I hoped he would be. I soon realized that he was a two
faced liar and one of the most awful people I have ever met. Little did my ten year old self know he
would be the downfall of my self confidence and he would slowly destroy any passion I had for the
sport I loved all with only a few words.
At the age of ten I was the most energetic, go lucky, confident girl. I excelled at my beloved sport,
soccer. I had been playing since I was just a mere five years old, far longer than the other girls.
Playing so long had helped me be at a higher level of skill than most of the other players on my team.
During my first season of competitive travel soccer I thought I had been blessed with an amazing
coach. His name was Kenrick Ramirez. Kenrick was from Trinidad and Tobago and had a thick
caribbean accent that at first I could not understand. I was intrigued by Kenrick s personality because
he was so much different than the other typical soccer coaches I had had my whole life. He seemed to
know everything like he was the soccer god. Unfortunately, none of

Animal Rights And The Ethical Treatment Of Animals
From Erasistratus of Alexandria to Galen, who is known as the creator of experimental physiology,
animals have been test subjects in experiments for more than two thousand years (Day 35). Every year
in the world as many as twenty two million animals are used for scientific or medical purposes (Day
10). A variety of animals are experimented on, including rats, mice, rabbits, dogs, cats, and primates
(Day 10). Those against animal research believe the tests are pointless (Day 10). They presume if the
experiments were effective, cancer and other diseases would be cured (Day 11). The ethicality of
testing is also debated. Today, multiple animal rights activist groups exist (Day 11). One of the most
immense groups, People for the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Operations performed may include drugging, infecting, addicting, freezing and burning, radiating,
shooting, and surgical mutilation of living, healthy animals (Carryer). From 1985 to 1987, Mary
Phillips, a sociologist, studied twenty seven researchers in twenty three laboratories (Day 31). It was
brought to Phillips attention that the scientists were not administering painkillers to the animals (Day
31). The researchers were describing the tests as painless even though they did not provide anesthesia
(Day 31). The cages in which the animals are kept are occasionally insanitary, small, and crowded
(Crupper). Some test animals do not experience the outdoors (Crupper). Their enclosures may be kept
in rooms with bright lights, inadequate ventilation, and loud noises (Crupper). Every year, anywhere
from 80,000 to 160,000 animals are put down or die from testing ( Transparency Needed 13). A
leading argument for the ban of animal research suggests the use of alternative procedures. In 1959,
William Russell and Rex Burch published The Principles of Humane Experimental Technique (Chang
11). The book presented the three R s: reduce the number of animals needed for experiments; refine
current tests to reduce pain; and replace animals with other

Boot Camp Program Analysis
I choose the boot camp program because the boot camp program show you what the word boot camp
means and what all you have to do in boot camp. A boot camp is short term reintegration program for
selected an offender that employs the methods of military discipline, strict programming, and physical
conditioning to prepare the offender for a return to the community with the ability to resist criminal
behavior. Implemented in October 1996, the program targets low risk, nonsexual offender and places
them in a four phase transitional program that combines traditional education and vocational
experience. The instructional phase targets the offenses and behaviors that led to committing crimes.
The phases are: Phase one Introductory classes: During

Dependent Personality Disorder
A Psychological Aspect of Susan Smith: Dependent Personality Disorder On October 25, 1994, Susan
Smith drowned her two sons, Michael and Alex, in the John D. Long Lake in Union County, South
Carolina. For nine days she lied about knowing where the boys were. On November 3, she confessed
to the killings and would soon go to trial. Susan s defense team hired a psychiatrist to conduct a
psychiatric evaluation of her. She was diagnosed as having dependent personality disorder. He
described her as a person who feels she can t do anything on her own . She constantly needs affection
and becomes terrified that she ll be left alone She was only depressed when she was alone. The
psychiatrist studied her family history and concluded that based ... Show more content on

(American Psychiatric Association, 1994) DPD is classified as a Cluster C personality disorder in the
DSM IV. Cluster C personality disorder is described as anxious or fearful. Females are more likely
than males to have a Cluster C personality disorder (Joseph Rey, 1996). Childhood illness or
separation anxiety disorder of childhood may be a premorbid condition to DPD. Some experts believe
that events occurring in early childhood exert a powerful influence upon behavior later in life. Others
indicate that people are genetically predisposed to personality disorders. In some cases, however,
environmental factors may cause a person who is already genetically vulnerable to develop a
personality disorder (National Mental Health Association). What is the link between parental over
protectiveness and authoritarianism and the development of dependent personality traits in children?
Parental over protectiveness and authoritarianism serve simultaneously to 1) reinforce dependent
behaviors in children of both sexes and 2) prevent the child from developing independent, autonomous
behaviors (since the parents do not permit the child to engage in the kinds of trial and error learning
that are involved in developing a sense of independence and mastery during childhood). Thus, when

Celiac Disease And Celiacs Disease
Celiacs disease (gluten sensitive enteropathy) is a condition where in some people, gluten cannot be
digested and causes an immune response. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, oats, and rye. In
some people who take in and ingest gluten, an enzyme named transglutaminase transforms the gluten
into a chemical that triggers an immune reaction, causing irritation and inflammation of the lining of
the small intestine (Wedro, 2016). The microvilli that make up the inside surface of the intestine are
destroyed, causing nutirents to pass without being, like our body needs from our diet. This can cause
damage to other organs in the body due to malabsorption. (Wedro, 2016) Organs that depends the
most on nutrients to function properly consist of the liver, bones and the brain. This is crucial
especially in children because malnutrition can lead to abnormal growth and development. (Wedro,
2016) Celiacs disease can also be known by Coeliac Disease. Roughly 8,000 years after its first
appearence, celiacs disease was identified and named. A Greek physician named Aretaeus of
Cappadocia who lived in the first century AD, wrote about The Coeliac Affection. Also, he called it
koiliakos after the Greek word koelia meaning abdomen. (Guandalini, 2007) Another 17 centuries
passed, and in the early 19th century Dr. Mathew Baillie, presumably unaware of Aretaeus, published
his observations on a chronic diarrheal disorder regarding adults, causing malnutrition and

Extra-Legal Institutions Case Study
Due to the unlawful nature of their activities, criminals are not able to turn to the state when they
require help in enforcing contracts or to provide them with security. Instead, they have developed a
complex system of extra legal institutions, including written constitutions and a formal separation of
powers. Due to most aspects of our lives being governed by the process of competition, and the
demand for illicit goods being consistently high, it is my contention that extra legal institutions do
present an efficient solution to the problems faced by self enforced exchanges. I will explain this
position, firstly, by examining the governing institutions of the Nuestra Familia Californian prison
gang. Secondly, I will look at the institutions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They are aware of one another s social standing and know who their friends are. Fear of being deemed
an outcast amongst a tightly knit group of convicts encourages the inmates to avoid conflict where
possible. When they wish to purchase illicit goods, the only place they are able to turn is to fellow
inmate entrepreneurs. If one was to take advantage in this exchange, it would quickly be prison wide
knowledge and the perpetrator would would be ostracised or assaulted. Fear of becoming an outlaw
amongst other outlaws incentivises good behaviour and cooperation and as a result of this, the prison
economy flourishes. However, since the 1950 s, it has been difficult to find a prison which is not
densely populated. It is increasingly difficult for inmates to keep track of other prisoners and, in such a
large group, ostracism is no longer a feasible punishment device and so prisoners began to organise
themselves into gangs.
La Nuestra Familia formed in the mid 1960 s as a response to the violence and oppressive actions of
the Mexican Mafia prison gang. The Mexican Mafia had been in charge of every drug transaction and
prison pleasure , as well as victimising Hispanic inmates who could not safely take showers and had
their guests victimised during visiting

  • 5. Herman Melville s Bartleby The Scrivener Bartleby the Scrivener delves into the life of a worker at a New York City Law firm. Herman Melville provides a drab and bleak outlook on the conditions of labor and mental state of the workers at the firm. Though the story can be seen as a depiction of the isolation and lack of passion found in big city labor, I believe that Melville provides much more in his writing. Within the details provided in the story, he manages to forge a metaphor for the power of transcendental ideals such as self reliance and choice within a society. He illustrates a culture run not by one s own beliefs, but rather the generalized other and people plagued by authoritarian ideals. By the end of the tale of Bartleby and his influence within the firm Melville strives to change society by informing the reader of the importance of non conformity and belief in one s ideals, but also the danger of following through with that in society. Melville initially creates a setting that adds a sense of desolation and dreariness within the office, as shown with the unobstructed view of a lofty brick wall, black with age and everlasting shade. This provides a general outlook on the law firm as a place of sadness, routine work, and isolation. The idea of being surrounded by wall also further depicts a sense of being physically trapped within their office, and possibly symbolically in their job or capitalist culture. In addition to the bleak atmosphere at the office, the workers at the firm are people who have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Reflective Commentary On Alison Bechdel s Fun Home Creative Response Reflective Commentary I reworked Daniel Defoe s Roxana in the graphic novel style of Alison Bechdel s Fun Home. Initially, the reason I chose the two novels was to see how well the oldest text on the course could be adapted into the newest. Interestingly the texts proved to be quite similar in narrative; both are versions of autobiography (although one fictional and one true), both feature a retrospective first person, self conscious narrator (Booth 155), and both centre around a female protagonist deviating from societal norms of the time. Fittingly enough Roxana also mentions her father in the beginning, although she leaves him dead quite quickly. Adapting a novel into a graphic novel is a drastic stylistic change, and my biggest concern was to keep my adaption steadily tied with the two texts, whilst trying not to get too carried away in the creative process. I based my process of making the comic on an interview with Alison Bechdel, where she explains how she planned the text in Adobe Illustrator, sketched and inked by hand, and finally rendered the panels digitally ( Alison Bechdel ). Nowadays, the fixed structure of grammar allows for little waywardness in format, apart from in the graphic novel. Although a very controversial idea, president Andrew Jackson pushed for the Indian Removal Act of 1830 which allowed the relocation of the Native Americans from their homeland to Indian Territory of present day Oklahoma (O Brien). The Trail of Tears had a negative impact on the Native American people, while benefiting the United States with a time of economic prosperity and growth. The Turn of the Screw can be read as a real ghost story: in this case, the ghosts are real and the story really is about good and evil. This does not particularly mean that the governess is mentally stable, because she still has her issues (like the fact that she falls in love easily), but it would explain her protecting behavior towards the children. In this reading, Miles s death is interpreted as a consequence of the governess s failure of protecting the children: she was unable to shield him from Peter Quint s evil. In the psychological reading, the governess is mentally unstable and hallucinates the appearance of the ghosts. In fact, this seems to be a plausible reading of the story, taking all the arguments of the governess s unreliability in account. That way, the hallucinations are a consequence of her isolation and sexual frustration. Miles s death is then interpreted as the governess (accidentally?) choking the boy to death. Death by Landscape can be interpreted in the same ways: the one in which the narrator is reliable and Lois innocent, or the one in which the narrator is unreliable and Lois killed Lucy. Essay on The Principle of Separate Corporate Personality The Principle of Separate Corporate Personality The principle of separate corporate personality has been firmly established in the common law since the decision in the case of Salomon v Salomon Co Ltd[1], whereby a corporation has a separate legal personality, rights and obligations totally distinct from those of its shareholders. Legislation and courts nevertheless sometimes pierce the corporate veil so as to hold the shareholders personally liable for the liabilities of the corporation. Due to the separate legal status of a company from its members this is usually very strictly maintained. In these instances the veil of incorporation is said to be pierced or lifted , i.e. the barrier between a company and its members is removed so there is no legal separation between them. There instances are however, difficult to predict as the reasons depend on the judges interpretation of fairness or policy or of how a particular statute should be interpreted. In this book, Herrigel describes many aspects of how archery is, in fact, not a sport, but an art form, and is very spiritual to those in the east. The process he describes shows how he overcame his initial inhibitions and began to look toward new ways of seeing and understanding. In the beginning of the book Herrigel tells us that he is writing about a ritual and religious practice, whose aim consists in hitting a spiritual goal, so that fundamentally the marksman aims at himself and may even succeed in hitting himself. The more obstinately you try to learn how to shoot the arrow for the sake of hitting the goal, the less you will succeed in the one and the further the other will recede. These changes were claimed to help the system to function better, cut down wait time, make the process faster, screen applicants better, and to prevent needless complications. • 23. Essay Monotheism vs. Polytheism Monotheism and polytheism are two very different belief systems. Monotheism is the belief in one god and polytheism is the belief in more one than one god. The concept of morality can and does exist within cultures that have only one god, as well as cultures that have multiple gods. Without morality, the world would be a place of extreme chaos and pandemonium. However, the foundation for morality within polytheistic religions is quite contradictory to the foundation for morality with monotheistic religions. Morality within polytheism is somewhat inconsistent and relative; whereas in monotheism, morality becomes more consistent and absolute. Morality exists throughout all cultures and religions of the world in some shape or form. In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, the foundations for morality in polytheism and monotheism are quite different. In polytheism the foundation for morality seems inconsistent and relative. Polytheistic religions have no ultimate reality or god to set a standard for morality that all the followers must obey. Instead, each of the many gods could have their own set of standards for morality. The inconsistency of morality could theoretically lead one to be faced with the dilemma of which god is correct. Let s suppose one is having an extramarital affair and is not sure if she should continue the affair or stop. Should she pray to the goddess of lust and passion, to the god that is all knowing or to the god of family and relationship? Not only does the inconsistency of morality standards cause followers to be faced with choosing which gods to embrace, but also cause them to be faced which god is appropriate to pray for moral guidance on different subjects. The notion that each of the multiple gods can set their standards for morality, allows for the follower to circumstantially pick and choose which god to follow. It is possible for a follower to be circumstantially selective because they do not have to answer to one specific god. One can choose to follow a certain god because that particular god s set of morals allows them to fulfill some desire or need that would otherwise not fulfilled under other ... • 24. Appropriate Curriculum For Young Children The debate about appropriate curriculum for young children generally centers on two options: free play and basic activities vs. straight academics (which is what many kindergartens across the country have adopted, often reducing or eliminating time for play). A new report, Lively Minds: Distinctions between academic versus intellectual goals for young children, offers a new way to look at what is appropriate in early childhood education. The report was written by Lilian G. Katz, professor emerita of early childhood education at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, where she is on the staff of the Clearinghouse on Early Education and Parenting. She is past president of the National Association for the Education of Young Children and the first president of the Illinois Association for the Education of Young Children. Katz is currently the editor of the online peer reviewed trilingual early childhood journal Early Childhood Research Practice, and she is the author of more than 100 publications about early childhood education, teacher education, child development and the parenting of young children. In her report, published by the nonprofit group Defending the Early Years, Katz says that beyond free play and academics, another major component of education (indeed for all age groups) must be to provide a wide range of experiences, opportunities, resources and contexts that will provoke, stimulate, and support children s innate intellectual dispositions. However, the Navy hindered the efforts to make the site into a wildlife refuge, by refusing to transfer the site to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The transfer refusal was mainly about site contaminants, which the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service did not want to accept responsibility for due to the fact that the Navy has a much larger budget than the Fish and Wildlife Service. The Navy later solicited the Department of Veterans Affairs, who needed modernized services for veterans in the San Francisco Bay Area, and the transfer occurred in June of 2014. This resulted in 512 acres being set aside as a wildlife reserve, but without the protection that a national wildlife refuge entails (Feeney, pers comm, 2015). The student population has a total of about 11,000 students divided between six elementary schools, two middle schools, and two high schools. Diversity is not a problem, since the community represents more than twenty five countries around the world. However, the change readiness of all stakeholders will be tested due to the district administrators decision of transforming the foreign language curriculum. From four foreign languages, only English and Spanish will be instructed within a two years period. This change has created the necessity of re training or let go educators due to need of a reduction in force (RIF). Nevertheless, the SPS relies on a big and well structured administrative team who successfully supports every school. The students of the SPS are committed to their success. Evidence of the academic achievement is that around 80% of the SPS graduate students pursue a higher education certification or career. There is one public university, one private university, and one junior college within the community. Additionally, few technological companies are settling in the zone, which rises the need of skilled workers. These companies are ready to help the SPS in their task of preparing students with the technological skills needed for those future jobs. All schools in SPS passed the state tests. Hawthorne uses this quote as an underlying statement that it wasn t just his wife that held him back from his rendezvous with the Devil, but also his Faith in God. Hawthorne meant for the reader to make the connection between Goodman s Wife, Faith and Goodman s faith in God for which both attempt to sway Goodman from following the path the Devil intends for him. Hawthorne in essence, portrayed Goodman as proof of the nature of evil in man by showing how easily even a young dedicated Puritan can easily be influenced by a complete stranger. This stranger was symbolically the Devil among men in this text. Hawthorne begins introducing the Devil immediately as trying to sway Goodman to follow him on a long journey. By leaving his wife, Faith to begin the journey, Goodman Brown was symbolically leaving his faith in God and entering a forsaken ground by following the Devil. The fact that Goodman Brown left with no regard for his wife Faith s warning, symbolized the lack of regard for his own faith in God and his fellow human race. This simple disregard that Goodman Brown showed was evidence of the easily persuaded ability of man to choose sin over good. To illustrate her point, Professor Davidson presents the historical development of the educational system in the U.S. She differentiates high standards from standardization and stresses the need for education to offer rigor, relevance, and relationship (201). Horace Mann, a farm boy himself and an early advocate for educational reform, saw the deficiencies in the educational system. Mann s ideas began to be adopted around the country in the second half of the nineteenth century. By the start of the twentieth century, mandatory public schooling was the norm. This was the height of the industrial revolution. As Davidson notes in Project Classroom Makeover , Public Education was seen as the most efficient way to train potential workers for labor in the newly urbanized factories (197). Schools began to work like an assembly line with a focus on efficiency, attention to detail, memorization of facts and staying on task. Curriculum became standardized and states began to replace the local management of education. Critically thinking outside the box was less valued. Regardless of ability, children started school at the same age and were moved through their education in a regulated process. Today, multiple animal rights activist groups exist (Day 11). One of the most immense groups, People for the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Operations performed may include drugging, infecting, addicting, freezing and burning, radiating, shooting, and surgical mutilation of living, healthy animals (Carryer). From 1985 to 1987, Mary Phillips, a sociologist, studied twenty seven researchers in twenty three laboratories (Day 31). It was brought to Phillips attention that the scientists were not administering painkillers to the animals (Day 31). The researchers were describing the tests as painless even though they did not provide anesthesia (Day 31). The cages in which the animals are kept are occasionally insanitary, small, and crowded (Crupper). Some test animals do not experience the outdoors (Crupper). Their enclosures may be kept in rooms with bright lights, inadequate ventilation, and loud noises (Crupper). Every year, anywhere from 80,000 to 160,000 animals are put down or die from testing ( Transparency Needed 13). A leading argument for the ban of animal research suggests the use of alternative procedures. In 1959, William Russell and Rex Burch published The Principles of Humane Experimental Technique (Chang 11). The book presented the three R s: reduce the number of animals needed for experiments; refine current tests to reduce pain; and replace animals with other ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 44. Dependent Personality Disorder A Psychological Aspect of Susan Smith: Dependent Personality Disorder On October 25, 1994, Susan Smith drowned her two sons, Michael and Alex, in the John D. Long Lake in Union County, South Carolina. For nine days she lied about knowing where the boys were. On November 3, she confessed to the killings and would soon go to trial. Susan s defense team hired a psychiatrist to conduct a psychiatric evaluation of her. She was diagnosed as having dependent personality disorder. The psychiatrist studied her family history and concluded that based ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (American Psychiatric Association, 1994) DPD is classified as a Cluster C personality disorder in the DSM IV. Cluster C personality disorder is described as anxious or fearful. Females are more likely than males to have a Cluster C personality disorder (Joseph Rey, 1996). Childhood illness or separation anxiety disorder of childhood may be a premorbid condition to DPD. Some experts believe that events occurring in early childhood exert a powerful influence upon behavior later in life. Others indicate that people are genetically predisposed to personality disorders. In some cases, however, environmental factors may cause a person who is already genetically vulnerable to develop a personality disorder (National Mental Health Association). What is the link between parental over protectiveness and authoritarianism and the development of dependent personality traits in children? Parental over protectiveness and authoritarianism serve simultaneously to 1) reinforce dependent behaviors in children of both sexes and 2) prevent the child from developing independent, autonomous behaviors (since the parents do not permit the child to engage in the kinds of trial and error learning that are involved in developing a sense of independence and mastery during childhood). Thus, when ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. Celiac Disease And Celiacs Disease Celiacs disease (gluten sensitive enteropathy) is a condition where in some people, gluten cannot be digested and causes an immune response. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, oats, and rye. In some people who take in and ingest gluten, an enzyme named transglutaminase transforms the gluten into a chemical that triggers an immune reaction, causing irritation and inflammation of the lining of the small intestine (Wedro, 2016). The microvilli that make up the inside surface of the intestine are destroyed, causing nutirents to pass without being, like our body needs from our diet. This can cause damage to other organs in the body due to malabsorption. (Wedro, 2016) Organs that depends the most on nutrients to function properly consist of the liver, bones and the brain. This is crucial especially in children because malnutrition can lead to abnormal growth and development. (Wedro, 2016) Celiacs disease can also be known by Coeliac Disease. Roughly 8,000 years after its first appearence, celiacs disease was identified and named. A Greek physician named Aretaeus of Cappadocia who lived in the first century AD, wrote about The Coeliac Affection. Also, he called it koiliakos after the Greek word koelia meaning abdomen. (Guandalini, 2007) Another 17 centuries passed, and in the early 19th century Dr. Mathew Baillie, presumably unaware of Aretaeus, published his observations on a chronic diarrheal disorder regarding adults, causing malnutrition and characterized by a ... • 46. Extra-Legal Institutions Case Study Due to the unlawful nature of their activities, criminals are not able to turn to the state when they require help in enforcing contracts or to provide them with security. Instead, they have developed a complex system of extra legal institutions, including written constitutions and a formal separation of powers. Due to most aspects of our lives being governed by the process of competition, and the demand for illicit goods being consistently high, it is my contention that extra legal institutions do present an efficient solution to the problems faced by self enforced exchanges. I will explain this position, firstly, by examining the governing institutions of the Nuestra Familia Californian prison gang. Secondly, I will look at the institutions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They are aware of one another s social standing and know who their friends are. Fear of being deemed an outcast amongst a tightly knit group of convicts encourages the inmates to avoid conflict where possible. When they wish to purchase illicit goods, the only place they are able to turn is to fellow inmate entrepreneurs. If one was to take advantage in this exchange, it would quickly be prison wide knowledge and the perpetrator would would be ostracised or assaulted. Fear of becoming an outlaw amongst other outlaws incentivises good behaviour and cooperation and as a result of this, the prison economy flourishes. However, since the 1950 s, it has been difficult to find a prison which is not densely populated. It is increasingly difficult for inmates to keep track of other prisoners and, in such a large group, ostracism is no longer a feasible punishment device and so prisoners began to organise themselves into gangs. La Nuestra Familia formed in the mid 1960 s as a response to the violence and oppressive actions of the Mexican Mafia prison gang. The Mexican Mafia had been in charge of every drug transaction and prison pleasure , as well as victimising Hispanic inmates who could not safely take showers and had their guests victimised during visiting ...
