That was until 1783 when the American War of Independence ended. When America
refused to take in anymore convicts, the English were forced to take the prisoners
somewhere else. Due to prisons overcrowding, they were still thinking where to put
all these convict. Their solution, was to put them in old, rotting prison ship known as
hulks. Hulks were normally old naval ships that could not go out into sea and fight
but they were still able to safely float on the water in the harbour. Once all the hulks
were full with convicts, they began shipping them out to Australia because they
thought that no one owns the land and was big enough to hold convicts for many

system was very cruel and it really disturbed the public. Their system was to chop the

They were able to obtain huge assembly of artifacts and precise surveys that are
still used to this day. Another major contributor to the understanding of the Mound
Builders was Cyrus Thomas. He was an entomologist and botanist that was made
the head of the Division of Mound Exploration. Thomas gathered his assistants and
set out into the Mississippi Valley to study the earthworks. During this time the
mounds were being destroyed by looters and fought to keep the mounds in good
condition. Over seven years Thomas was able to survey more than two thousand
mounds and collect tens of thousands of artifacts. He then wrote an a work called
the Report on the Mound Explorations of the Bureau of Ethnology. In this report
Cyrus was able to explain the diversity and integrity of the Mound Builder culture.
The Native Americans were now able to be viewed as people who had a rich past,
not one of barbarism as thought before. These were people that deserved respect and

Virginia Woolf, an early twentieth century English modernist, uses a combination of
symbols,imagery, and diction to demonstrate to her audience the ultimate struggle
between life and death and the inescapable inevitability of death. In The Death of
the Moth,in order to give the reader a visual of the struggle between life and
death,Woolf uses the moth as a symbol representing a life force. To the audience we
see it as a deeper meaning or a different representation. Virginia Woolf
wants us to
see the moth as a real human life. We compare the two because we as humans are
like the moth, we live and we die.She made sure to let us know that He was little or
nothing but life. That one mention is enough for the audience to perceive the moths
oncoming death. The second symbol Virginia Woolf uses is the pencil. She uses the
pencil to represent how someone wants to help you, but inevitably either can not or

Nevertheless the present specimen, with his narrow hay colored wings, fringed
with tassel of the same color, seemed to be content with life. The moth is full of
life and death does not seem to be there at all. He is showing signs full of life and
personifying happiness. He was trying to resume his dancing, but seemed either so
stiff or so awkward that he could only flutter to the bottom of the windowpane.
Now we see that the moth is showing signs of an older person. Slowly getting older
and in the verge of dying. The body relaxed, and instantly grew stiff. The struggle
was over. At last as we see here the moth finally dies and and it does not have to
suffer the feeling of not being able to do anything but sit there and die.The battle is
