Journal #7 Pride and Prejudice
JOURNAL # 7 PRIDE AND PREJUDICE
The proposal scene in Chapter 34 (quote from here) is one of the most famous passages in all of
English literature. It represents very well the two main themes of the novel that appear in the title:
pride and prejudice. First, look up and define each word: pride and prejudice. Then respond to the
following questions.
Pride: satisfaction derived from one s own achievements, the achievements of those with whom one
is closely associated.
Prejudice: a preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience.
Part One: Darcy s pride and prejudice
a.Explain how Darcy demonstrates pride during the proposal scene; use quotes from Chapter 34 to
support your claim and EXPLAIN how the quotes support it.
Even though Mr. Darcy had the best intentions when he proposed to Elizabeth, his word choice
was not the best. The narrator describes his dialect in the following quote, He spoke well; but
there were feelings besides those of the heart to be detailed; and he was no more eloquent on the
subject of tenderness than of pride. His sense of her inferiority of it being a degradation...
(Austen 34). He must find it sweet and heartwarming that he is choosing to lower his social class
for love, but he also seems to imply that he is better than her. Elizabeth feels insulted that he
would say something like that to her. She responds to Mr. Darcy by saying, You chose to tell me
that you liked me against your reason, against your will, and even against your character? (Austen
34). To her it probably seems like he is settling for her, when it comes to her social status.
b. Explain how Darcy demonstrates prejudice during the proposal scene; use quotes from Chapter
34 to support your claim and EXPLAIN how the quotes support it
Elizabeth calls out Mr. Darcy on his prejudice towards Mr. Wickham. Instead of paying attention to
the type of person he is, Mr.Darcy makes it seems like his current financial situation defines him.
Elizabeth states the following in the heated argument between her and Mr. Darcy, You have
reduced him to his present state of poverty, comparative poverty. You have

Fortune 500 Research Paper Project
This research paper project will be about Amazon.com, Inc. Amazon.com is a shopping site
online and it can be access anywhere as long as you have internet. It is a well known internet
based retailer and it s available worldwide. Amazon Inc is known for its fastness and convenience,
which is a better way to shop for things nowadays, because not everyone wants to go through a
hassle of looking for things in store, and having to carry shopping bags from place to place.
Amazon.com sells everything, from electronic devices, DVDs, digital movies/music, to household
furniture, books, school supplies and beauty products. In my opinion, Amazon.com attracts buyers
because they sell products with good deals and sometimes come with free shipping which is
always a plus. Specially, Amazon.com sells some products that you rarely or never see in retailer
stores. The primarily products that they are known for are their signature Kindle, which is similar
to a tablet but its common use is for reading e books. Amazon.com gets their products from retailers
like Nordstrom, Target, Michaels, ... and individual sellers that want to sell their stuff, either used
or brand new. Some big companies take advantage and sell their goods through Amazon.com so
they can sell more products.
Based on the statistics of Fortune 500, Amazon.com ranked number 29, right before Wells Fargo
and after Citigroup, 2 common banks in the United States.

Hip Hop And Its Impact On African American Culture
In the 70 s a new genre of music was created in South Bronx, New York. That genre is known as
Hip Hop. Over the years Hip Hop has gained popularity becoming arguably one of the most
influential forms of music to date. Hip Hop artist or Mc s used it to express their views on a
multitude of topics to their fans. These topics range wildly from the more serious subjects like
the everyday life of people living in the projects, personal obstacles they had to endure, and
politics. As well as, more lighthearted topics like enjoying your time in a night club or hanging out
with friends. For those reasons, I believe Hip Hop is representative of the African American
community.
Even after 25 years hip hop has continued to reflect issues that are going on in black communities.
I think that hip hop has transformed from just a genre of music to more along the line of being a
culture. Two and half... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Those two points race and background are often used against blacks to often undermined or belittle

Trayvon. In which people thought Obama was trying to entice a racial divide. I believe President
Obama was simply trying to say that the event leading up to Trayvon death could have happened to
any African American son. That notion was important because young African Americans are often
viewed as hoodlums or thugs. For that reason, I think that if artist continue to make songs with
lyrics like that in them young African American children will understand how things should be.

The Pros And Cons Of Federalism, Unitary And Confederal...

POS 2041: American National Government
Fall 2017
Instructor: Douglas Rivero
Analyze the pros and cons of federalism, unitary and confederal systems. Explain to me whether
you believe that we should keep our federal system or whether we should abandon it in favor of a
different one.
Before discussing the pros and cons of different governmental systems, let s know about the federal,
unitary, and confederal systems? There are three systems of governmentexist today: federal, unitary,
and confederal. Federal system is a medium centralized, Unitary system is highly centralized, and
confederal system has a low level centralization. Furthermore, federal system believes in the strong
national government which shares power with the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The biggest advantage of federal system is check and balances a political system where each
branch of government have authority to keep checks on other branches and to influence the
decisions of other branches; the political power is not concentrated in the hands of individuals or
groups. Now, let s see the cons of the federal system. Cons of the federal system are: prevention of
the creation of a national policy, lack of accountability, and potential for corruption. Federalismalso
causes confusion between the local governments and the national government as well.
(Federalism Pros and Cons List, 2015) For an example, the United State doesn t have a single
policy on issues, which often leads to the confusion. Also, power of authority can create a possible
atmosphere for corruption at local and national level. For an example, if majority of the congress
wants to pass a law on something and local states do not agree on it, then the local government can
agree on the law to get something in return in form of money or favors!
Second, advantages of unitary system are simplicity, less corruption, simplified economic policies,
and high level of national pride. Unitary government is simple. Fewer people are involved in the
decision making process so that decisions are made faster and more efficiently. (apecsecadmin,
2015) In a unitary system, only few self motivated people have direct access to the decision makers,

John Locke s Second Treatise On Civil Government
Freedom, a concept essential to the human experience, should have some limitations. In addition, I
will explore the definition of freedom, how the power of government is also limited and how these
limitations fit into the theories of Hobbes, Locke, and Aristotle.
There should be limits to freedom because unlimited freedom can endanger the liberties of others.
Without limits to freedom, individuals can use their natural rights to cause harm and hurt others.
Freedom, as defined as by John Locke, is to be free from any superior power on earth, and not to
be under the will or legislative authority of men. If the individual exists in a society, then Locke
theorizes their liberty exists under the legislative power established by consent in the ... Show more

In Locke s Second Treatise on Civil Government, the philosopher theorizes on the limitations of
freedom. To begin with, Locke makes the critical point that in the state of nature men are
perfectly free to order their actions, and dispose of their possessions and themselves, in any way
they like, without asking anyone s permission. However this freedom is subject only to limits set
by the law of nature. Locke believes that the limitations to freedom are dictated by the law of
nature. In Locke s view, everyone is equal in the state of nature, with the same advantages and
privileges. Therefore, no individual has the right to abuse the liberty of others, even if they have the
freedom and ability to do so. This abuse, termed as license, exists outside the state of nature and
Locke believes that this power is not granted to anyone. This is especially important when
considering the power of the government. For Locke, the power of the government must be limited
to the laws of nature. Once the government starts acting outside the laws of nature, the government
becomes illegitimate.
Aristotle also feels that freedom should be used for the peace and prosperity of others. In Aristotle
s Nicomachean Ethics, there exists two different types of freedom: positive and negative. Negative
freedom is the freedom from something, such as barriers or government coercion. Positive
freedom, which is recommended by Aristotle, is the freedom to pursue an end. For Aristotle, the
ideal end is a complete life, full of virtue. This life, full of happiness and friendship, does not exist
to harm or foul to others. Without these limitations, positive freedom would not be

Conservative M.P Boris Johnson s satirical article Don t let Ed Miliband sink this country with his

Conservative leaning newspaper The Daily Telegraph. In this article, Johnson uses a variety of
satirical techniques such as the use of diminutive language, metaphors, satirical tone, rhetorical
questions and others, in order to present Ed Miliband, representing of the Labour party, as a

Johnson uses the headline with metaphorical words and diminutive language in order to portray
how Ed Miliband will cause a downturn in the U.K Don t let Ed Miliband sink this country with
his commie slab of rock . The use of the metaphorical word sink connotes the idea of the connection
Miliband has with regression as the country will be ruined if he comes to power. Furthermore,
Johnson uses the diminutive commie slab in order to decrease the importance of communism.
Johnson uses the word commie instead of communist to indicate the ridicule ideology that Miliband
presents. Hence, the headline, which s purpose is to catch the attention of the reader, directly
associates communism with regression therefore a threat to the British country. The headline
facilitates Johnson fulfil his purpose of entertain the Conservative reader as the headline causes
humor in the reader. Moreover, Johnson uses the following metaphor to compare Miliband s
ideology to previous unsuccessful communist regimes as if this were East Germany circa 1973...
Johnson uses this metaphor in a satirical way to compare Miliband s actions to the once
communist East Germany, which is constantly seen as the grey Germany. East Germany was also,
in comparison to West Germany underdeveloped; when Johnson contrasts Miliband s actions to
East Germany he is associating Ed Miliband or Red Ed with Communism and regression. By
doing so, Johnson portrays Ed Miliband as a threat to Britain yet still in a satirical way, aiding
Johnson to fulfil his purpose of entertaining the Conservative

Short Story On Deadweather
Nobody lived on Deadweather but us and the pirates. It wasn t hard to understand why. For one
thing, the weather was atrocious. Eleven months out of twelve, it was brutally hot and humid,
with no wind at all, so on a bad day the air felt like a hot, soggy blanket smothering you from all
sides. And the other month was September, which meant hurricanes. Then there was the volcano.
It hadn t actually blown in ages, but it belched smoke and shook the earth enough to scare away
anybody who might ve overlooked the pirates and the weather. The only reason it didn t scare
me, even though plenty of things do, was because I d been born and raised halfway up its slope
and didn t know any different. That s how I felt about the pirates, too. There were two kinds on
Deadweather: the normal ones, who hung around down in Port Scratch, drinking and getting into
knife fights whenever they weren t off raiding Cartager gold ships; and the busted down, broken
ones, who d lost too many limbs or eyes or organs to crew a ship, but not enough to kill them
outright. A few of those stayed in the Scratch, patching together a living in the taverns and the gun
shops, but most of them hobbled up the mountain to work for Dad on the ugly fruit plantation. I

What Ways Do Practices Of Consumption Drive Ecological...
In what ways do practices of consumption drive ecological degradation?
The consumption of some goods and services results to ecological degradation more than we may
realize. The things that we purchase contribute directly or indirectly to pollution, climate change,
resources depletion and biodiversity loss. Ecological degradation refers to the deterioration in
environmental quality from ambient concentrations of pollutants and other activities and processes
such as improper land use and natural disasters (OECD, 1997). Ecological degradation is in most
cases a result of socioeconomically, institutional and technological activities. The resources that are
affected include water, soil and air. The degradation also impacts our wildlife,... Show more content

Mining provides a number of jobs to a large number of people along with being a great source for
government revenues. Despite its great contribution to the economy, the effects that it has on the
environment appears to be of great concern. For example rainforests are a great and important
source of wood, oxygen and medicine for everyone. Rainforests in the amazon in particular are
known for its alluvial deposits of gold that are found at river banks after major floods and river
channels. In order for miners to mine gold, hydraulic mining techniques are often used. This
method involves the process of blasting at the riverbanks that results to irreversible damage to
trees and animals. Through the process of separating the mercury and the sediment from gold
yielding gravel deposits, miners who appear to be less equipped than industrial miners sometimes
may ignore the release of some of the mercury into the river. The mercury is then likely to enter the
food chain through water animals as well as their predators. Highly compound cyanide is also used
to separate gold from sediment and rock. In spite of all precautionary measures, it sometimes
escapes into the surrounding environment (Rose, 2012). Therefore those who consume fish might
be at great risk of contamination of such toxins. Chemicals such as sulfuric acid, cyanide and
methyl mercury are usually used in different

Treasure Island, by Robert Louis Stevenson, is an adventure story with pirates, greed, and
violence taking place in the mid 1700 s. It is narrated by Jim Hawkins. Jim is an adventurous boy
that lives in a inn that his father owns. A cruel captain, who resides in the inn, dies, leaving a

many hard times, but he always persevered. He faced a huge disappointment when he found out
that Long John Silver wasn t the clean and pleasant tempered (66) man he always thought him to

The Distinction of Social Classes in Sister Carrie by...
By the later part of the 1800 s New York and Chicago were some of the largest cities in the world
and both had populations that exceeded a million. With the growing population, the economy s
stability began to fluctuate. The instability within the states gave rise to two distinct populations
within America, the upper and the working classes. Theodore Dreiser, knowing the volatile state
America was built upon, highlighted the economic differences between the wealthy and the poor in

Stereotypes Of African American Women Essay
Stereotypes of African American Women
A stereotype is a gross generalization of an entire people. Have you ever heard someone imply that
all police officers love donuts? This is an example of a common stereotype . It does have some
comedic value, but it obviously can t be true. Now consider a more serious stereotype about police
officers: that all caucasian officers are racist . This statement has no comedic value, and illustrates
the power of overgeneralization; it gives a bad reputation to all caucasian officers, and actually
has negative implications for officers of all skin colors. Where do you think the origin of this
particular stereotype is? The answer is other stereotypes. There actually are racist police officers,
and stereotypes fuel racism.
Cycles of gross generalizations create hatred, and promote inequality. For these reasons, they are
important to understand and discuss. For this assignment, I will explore the history and meaning
of three stereotypes of African American women outlined by Melissa Harris Perry in her book
Sister Citizen. I hope to attain a better understanding of the sociological and political forces behind
them. I will then apply what I learn to the film adaptation of The Help by Kathryn Stockett, a novel

Bilingual And Bilingualism
The world is unique and big. There are many different states, countries, and cities. Countries can
have a lot in common like relationships, food, and education. Countries can also have a lot of
differences like religions, beliefs, and languages. Languages may vary but is also very important in
communication and understanding. A huge epidemic that is becoming more common is
bilingualism also known as bilingual. Languageis a cognitive function that takes place in the brain,
bilingualism can improve brain function.
Broca s and Wernicke s area is located in the left hemisphere. Broca is responsible for the
muscles involved in word pronunciation within the frontal lobe. Wernicke is located in the
temporal lobe and is associated with a person s language compensation. Brain imaging MRI
studies have been conducted to view the activity of the brain during speech and hearing. Studies
that heard their native language being their first or primary language showed activation in the left
hemisphere as according to Broca s and Wernicke s area. People who knew American Sign
Language (ASL) or a second language had greater activity in the right hemisphere and sometimes
even the left and the right (Wilson, J., 2013). Children develop language according to an invariant
sequence of steps or stages (Shriner Shriner, 2014, 6.2 Infants par 2). At 12 months an infant will
begin echolalia and intonation then evolving to a vocabulary with over thirty words by 24 months.

to Fun City and do golf, go carts and the Super Slide! Golf is always fun. They have eighteen
holes of hills and tunnels. I win occasionally. Oddly enough, my cousin, Bracken, wins a lot. And
he is only four! He doesn t even aim! I win at go karts half the time, the other half I start behind
them and can never seem to catch up! And the superslide! That thing is like a hundred feet tall!
Not to mention the river! It is so beautiful; it splits the Fun City complex in half. The bumper
boats, go karts, golf course, and arcade are on the far side. The two Super... Show more content on

I had to spend most of my time working on height. I bounced probably twenty times to get my
height back up.Then I performed my second flip! I tucked, leaned, and flipped before striking
the tramp and doing it again. I lost enough momentum that I needed to bounce three times to
regain height. I then flipped forward, lowering my bounce height yet again. As I bounced again,
I felt a spray of water from the river hit my face, a smell of fish in the air. I fell again and
bounced higher. I kept going as fast as I could, knowing my time was at least half way up. I
flipped again and again, never stopping. I went and went. Forward, jump, back, jump, back,
jump. Over and over and over. I eventually got high enough that I had to do a double flip. I
flipped forward as I went up, and again as I went down. I barely made it before I hit the tramp. I
bounced a few times to recover, then kept going, back, jump, forward, jump, back, jump, regain
height, back, jump. I went on and on and on. I was almost out of time; I knew that. So I kept
going. I had counted nineteen so far. I jumped twice, flipped, jumped, flipped. Then I felt the
workers lowering me down. I managed one more before I was too low, and I kept jumping until

Five Signature Themes Analysis
Signature themes are skills we innately possess that can develop into talents and strengths used to
produce excellence. Personally, my five signature themes; empathy, achiever, learner, strategic, and
connectedness, have been apparent my entire life and can develop into strengths promoting success
in my future. Few aspects of my strengths came as a surprise, other than how accurate my
assessment was. Others see my empathy and signature themes as weaknesses needing improvement,
but now I realize that I can grow my skills into my greatest strengths to succeed in my future career,
my spiritual journey and in my relationships.
The Signature Theme Assessment highlighted several aspects of my skills others have noticed

Achievers typically are skilled advisors to several individuals, which works with my empathy
theme in helping others. Achievers not only have the stamina to work vigorously, but also set lofty
goals and relentlessly pursue them. The learner skill explains my intense desire for gaining
knowledge each day. Habitually I bring together multiple pieces of information eagerly referring
to my newly acquired knowledge, both with school and with family and friends. Typically, I
become frustrated until I figure out why events happen the way they do, which helps me strive
to learn as much as I can about it. With goals of being a Psychologist these themes can help me
by setting the goal of my PhD, giving me the stamina to achieve my goal, the quest for
knowledge in my field, and relentlessly pursuing my degree to become the best Psychologist I

Literary Analysis Essay On To Kill A Mockingbird
A New Perspective On, To Kill a Mocking Bird In Harper Lee s , To Kill a Mocking Bird, Lee
takes a stand against social injustice and racial inequality. In To Kill a Mocking Bird, a man
named Atticus Finch, a lawyer, must take the case of a black male accused of raping a white
woman. Despite the small district of Maycomb county telling him that Tom Robinson, the black
man, was guilty, Atticus chose to believe Tom. He and his two young kids, Scout and Jem, are
forced to face the grasp that racial injustice on their small, southern town and learn to take people

In the novel, it is shown very frequently that Jem and Scout struggle to grasp this idea. Their
struggle helps enforce the idea that understanding people takes more than just your view to
understand. This is shown when Scout struggles to realize why her teacher treated her the way
she did. When Atticus tries to explain things from Ms. Caroline s point of view, he said, You
never understand a person until you consider things from his point of view. (Lee pg. 22) Despite
this thorough explanation, Scout doesn t fully understand this topic until the last chapter, when
she finally sees things from Boo Radley s perspective. She said toward the end of the last
chapter, Atticus was right. One time he said you never really know a man until you stand in his
shoes and walk around in them. Just standing on the Radley porch was enough. (Lee pg.273)
Harper Lee s timeless message about social equality is still a pressing issue today. Similar to
Scout s struggle, our society struggles to also understand other s perspectives. If anything, we
could all take a lesson from Scout and learn to take a walk in another man s

A Child s Role With The Parent And Who Is A Person That...
A father is a person that supports the family and who is there to help the mother take care of
children. A mother is someone who takes care of her children in the best of her ability in the
early stages of their lives, and also later on. A pair of parents responsibilities is to take care of the
family, do what is best for their children, and teach them to walk in the right path. They are not to
be selfish on their decisions to be happy by themselves without their children. The most disturbing
subject these days is; Divorcecaused by irresponsible parents and accusation through the custody
and alimony process. People are smarter these days, and end their marriagebefore it gets long
enough to pay alimony, child support for their stepchildren, or pregnancy of their current spouse.
With the starting of one bad parenting, there are fathers that try to accuse the mothers of
adultery, which leads to refusing of the children; all to just avoid child support. They are awfully
good at lying and accusing at court and to any witness they can make to write false claimed letter
to the court. There is something called Joint Custody which gives two parents the right to receive
their children s welfare and not paying child support. The poor children are constantly on a
visitation schedule, and have no freedom to decide what would be best for them. One mediator
gets the judge to decide everything for all types of families. Irresponsible parents do anything to get

Examples Of Critical Pedagogy
CRITICAL PEDAGOGY
There are many different definitions for critical pedagogy, when a person hears this approach it
sparks different views and ways of teaching to each individual. According to Wikiversity
(Wikiversity, 2013) Critical pedagogy is a teaching approach inspired by Marxist critical theory and
other radical philosophies, which attempts to help students question and challenge posited
domination, and to undermine the beliefs and practices that are alleged to dominate.
Freire, Hooks and Kumashiro are leading educators that have helped define and transform the
critical pedagogy approach. Key characteristics for each educator are listed below.

make people more critical in thought and action, progressively minded educators can help to free
learners to see the world as it is and to act accordingly
EXAMPLES OF CRITICAL PEDAGOGY PRACTICES IN TEACHING AND LEARNING:
An examples of critical pedagogy practices in teaching and learning include:
Re examining and re constructing the whole curriculum of the classroom.
The role of the student should be changed from a role of being the object in the classroom to being
an active and critical subject (Shor, 1980).
Students should undergo a struggle in which they struggle for ownership of themselves, teachers
should provide opportunities for this.
Processes in the classroom should be set up which enables learners to strive for something different
for themselves
The teacher should be very involved in these processes of critical pedagogy in the classroom to
ensure success
Teachers need to help students separate themselves from an unconditional acceptance of the
conditions of their existence (Shor,

Islam, Islam And The Beliefs Of Islam
Religion is the belief of a God, or Gods, and there are many different types of religion. Each
religion has different systems of worship and believes in some different things. Even though every
religion is a little different, sometimes they have some things in common also. Islam is a religion
that believes in one, eternal God, named Allah. The word of Allah is spoken from the angel named
Gabriel, to Muhammad. Muhammad is the founder of the Islamic religion. He was born in Mecca,
Saudi Arabia, which is where the religion was founded, and he died in the year 632 A.D. Islamwas
founded in the beginning of the seventh century. Like stated earlier, Muslims believe in one
God. They also believe in the angels, who are respected creatures, they believe in God s revealed
books, including the Quran, they believe in the Prophets and Messengers of God, where
Muhammad was the last Prophet sent by God, they believe in the Day of Judgement, which is
when everybody will be resurrected based on their beliefs and achievements, and they believe in Al
Qadar, where God gives people free will.
Practicing and worshipping in this religion, has some rules, or standard guidelines, for everyday
lifes. These are called the Five Pillars of Faith. These include, Shahadah, Salah, Zakah, Sawm, and
Hajj. To start off with, Shahadah is the assertion of belief. It s when the people of the Islamic
religion indicate that there is only one God, and that Muhammad is his prophet. Next, Salah is the

Saudi Women s Participation For Public Atmosphere
Saudi Women s Participation in Public Atmosphere
Introduction
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is one of the most influential countries in The Middle East. It is also
a key member of the Gulf Countries Cooperation, amalgamation of monarchies in the Arabian
Peninsula. Saudi Arabia is currently ruled by King Salman Al Saud was crowned as the King on
January 23, 2015. Saudi Arabia is also the cofounder of The Organization of the Petroleum
Exporting Countries (OPEC), which plays a significant rule in the global economy. The population
is about 30.0 million, one half of which are women. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the biggest and
most crowded nation on the Arabian Peninsula, is the overseer of two of the holy Muslim cities:
Mecca and Medina, where Islam emerged: Those two cities attract more than 5 million visitors
annually.
Municipal election is a new system in Saudi Arabia. The first municipal election took place in
2005 after the former king Fhad made his announcement. According to Alghamdy in his research
Step towards Democracy: On 10 October 2003, the late King Fahd Bin Abdulaziz decided to put
one half of all municipal council seats to the vote within a year . The Saudi Arabian Cabinet

An Description Of An Exact Dissipation Model For Arbitrary
Referee Report: Manuscript ID# OL: 280139
PAPER DESCRIPTION
In the paper titled An exact dissipation model for arbitrary photonic Fock state transport in
waveguide QED systems , Chen et al. have presented a dissipation model to study the Fock and
coherent state transport through waveguide QED (wQED) systems. As the main novelty of their
work, they have modelled the environment as a 3D scattering channel (described in a real space
picture similar to the waveguide modelling) and it has been shown that a reduced Hamiltonian can
be obtained for arbitrary photon number Fock state which can describe the photonic transport with
a restricted eigenstate. To illustrate, one , two , N photon and coherent state examples are
presented. Finally, two simple geometries of the scattering channel are considered namely the
uniform medium and a slab waveguide. Authors have also very briefly pointed out the applicability
of their model in cavity QED.
COMMENTS AND DECISION
Overall the paper has interesting findings and is systematically presented. In particular, the
modelling of the environment as a non excitable 3D scattering channel, is the key attraction in this
work. Moreover, the authors have made claims which seems not to be exaggerated. However, there
are some points in this work which can be ambiguous to the interested reader. Therefore, I can
recommend publication of this paper in the Optics Letters, provided the authors performs the
following revisions:

Examples Of Disillusionment In The Great Gatsby
In The Great Gatsby, the characters become deluded about themselves and others through
relationships or wealth. Fitzgerald uses this disillusionment to trace their changes through their
interactions with one another and their journey to where they are at the end of the novel: Nick,
whose mind has been widened, Daisy, who returns to her carelessness and wealth, and Gatsby, a
dead man, but alright in the end . However, Nick already believed himself to be open minded and
wise, Gatsby never had the romantic success that would make him alright, and Daisy believed
herself to be a victim of Tom s and societies cruelties. Their journeys in the book boil down to one
statement, that their self conceptions are all flawed. Nick sees himself as a moderate... Show more

this is her little chat with Nick, when she says, I think everything s terrible anyhow, (Fitzgerald,

she kills Myrtle, keeps driving, and lets Gatsby take the blame, even letting him die for it without
coming to the funeral or trying to make amends, Nick sums her up perfectly: Careless people,
Tom and Daisy they smashed up things and creatures... and let other people clean up the mess they

President Lyndon B. Johnson
New president Lyndon B. Johnson acquired a troublesome circumstance in Vietnam, as the South
Vietnamese government was in shambles and the Viet Cong was making substantial additions in
provincial ranges of the South. Despite the fact that Johnson charged himself as an intense hostile

Johnson took care of the Vietnam circumstance respectably amid the early piece of his term,
endeavoring to proceed with Kennedy s projects without drastically heightening the war.
New Strategies
Johnson made a few changes in U.S. military authority. Despite the fact that Robert S. McNamara
stayed as secretary of guard, General Earle G. Wheeler turned into the new executive of the Joint
Chiefs of Staff. General William C. Westmoreland was instated as authority of the MACV,
supplanting past administrator General Paul Harkins, by then alluded to as General Blimp for his
propensity to swell the ARVN s victories.
Westmoreland, sickened with the debasement and ineptitude of the ARVN, pushed for 200,000
American ground troops. In the interim, National Security Advisor McGeorge Bundy contended for
expanded besieging of focuses in North Vietnam, particularly processing plants. McNamara, an
understudy of amusement hypothesis, pushed a one good turn deserves another strategy against
North Vietnam ( U.S. powers would strike Hanoi if Viet Cong went in all out attack mode in South

Literary Analysis Of Reginald Gibbons s Wood
Chopping wood, it seems like a task that is unnecessary in the modern world. Have you ever
chopped wood? Have you ever held an axe in your hands and then with all your might, hammer
down on a piece of wood with the hopes it will split right in half? Imagine a three foot axe in
hand and your only task is to split the maple log in front of you. All around you are trees and the
other logs and pieces of wood you have gathered to either process or store for later use as fuel,
but how much is enough fuel? Reginald Gibbons uses graphic imagery, and imaginative
metaphors in his poem, Wood , to illustrate the difficult task of chopping wood through a not
very obvious first person perspective, but upon further inspection, the poem uses imagery to
establish the setting and also explores the different thoughts the unnamed character has. Right
away, I noticed the large amount of imagery that was used in this poem A cylinder of maple / set
in place, feet spread apart / and the heavy maul, fat as a hammer ( Wood 1 3). The first paragraph
gives an accurate depiction of the action and visuals of what it is like to be outside on a cold day
to split wood. Gibbons uses a heavy amount of imagery, mainly sight, in this poem. Each stanzahas
some form of imagery within it. The choice of words and stylehe decided to use puts a very
weighty and, at one point, even put a darker mood over the poem. Right away, he describes the
process of splitting wood; this sets up the setting

Algae Research Paper
One world environmental issue that we have to turn our attention to is poaching, specifically in

year alone, over 35000 elephants were killed for their ivory tusks. Ivory is sold illegally for up
to $1000 per pound, and the tusks are often carved into jewelry, religious figurines, utensils, and
other small trinkets. Around 2000 zebras remain in the wild, and these animals are sought after
for their black and white striped skins, which are often made into clothing or accessories. The
surviving lion population is a mere 15% of what it used to be, and that is because farmers keep
killing them before the lions kill their livestock. Lions are often hunted for fun too, most recently
Cecil. The black rhino population is down 97.6% since 1960, and these animals are killed for their
valuable horns. The horns are believed to heal various ailments, when in reality, the horns do not
cure anything, it s all myth. Fewer than 900 mountain gorillas remain in the wild, and infant

Persuasive Essay On Women s Hockey
If we allow the sport to go on without helmets then eventually we will have an NFL situation on
our hands where we are trying to unwind years worth of denial and neglect while grown women
suffer the effects of head injury (Cochran). Many compare the friendly game of women s lacrosse
to the brutal, physical sport of football, but that should not be the case. This is why women must
have more protection when playing lacrosse. Checking, concussions, and helmets are all major
reasons to supply this gear. Before one can deem women s lacrosse as dangerous, they must
understand the overall concept of the game. The rules of women s lacrosse are actually quite
simple. There are twelve players on the field at all times including the goalkeeper during the sixty
minute duration of the game that has two halves. The object of the game is to cradle, catch, pass, and

Although it is an illegal action within the sport s rules, violent checking will and does happen.
The rules on checking are quite easy to understand, but they are in great depth. Field players may
pass, catch or run with the ball in their crosse. A player may gain possession of the ball by
dislodging it from an opponent s crosse with a check. A check is a controlled tap with a crosse
on an opponent s crosse in an attempt to knock the ball free. The player must be one step in front
of her opponent in order to check. No player may reach across an opponent s body to check the
handle of a crosse when she is even with or behind that opponent. A player may not protect the
ball in her crosse by cradling so close to her body or face so as to make a legal, safe check
impossible for the opponent. All legal checks must be directed away from a seven inch sphere or
bubble around the head of the player (Marquette). Checking from the stick is the number one reason
for injury in women s lacrosse and it should not

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Case Study
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is a lethal genetic X linked disease results from the
mutation in the reading frame of the dystrophin protein, and it affects mostly boys in their muscle
and cardiopulmonary function. Although there are no effective treatments to cure DMD patients
right now, scientists consistently explore more methods to come up with the practical treatments.
One of the most popular and valid approaches is a geneediting therapeutic method CRISPR/Cas9
Genome Editing. It adapts from the natural systems in bacteria, and it can generate targeted gene
modifications to target specific DNAsequence. Then it introduces shifts within exons to restore the
reading frame, so it can express a partial functional dystrophin protein.... Show more content on

Secondly, although both studies use CRISPR Cas9 as an agent to treat the DMD genetic disease,
the principle of the mechanism is different. Young et al. used the normal bacterial protein Cas9 as
a source to modify DMD; however, Lee et al. developed non viral Cas9 to induce HDR. The two
methods obviously would have two different outcomes. Hence, the third difference between them
was the phenotype expressed after the treatment. Yong et al. can restore a functional dystrophin
protein by reframing the gene, but the method could only reduce a phenotype similar to Becker
Muscular Dystrophy (BMD) phenotype. Lee et al. corrected the dystrophin mutation, including
point mutation and small deletions, too their wild type sequence, which could regenerate fully
functional wild type dystrophin.
The advantage of both studies is that both method have tested on in vivo and in vitro, which
allows the future studies to work on the development of ex vivo gene correction so that a better
treatment for DMD could be generated. However, both studies still have some defects relatively.
For example, the protocol of the Yong et al. study was unclear, which is significant for DMD
patient as the misleading protocol could be fetal to the patients. Although Lee et al. mentioned that
CRISPR Gold did not cause any inflammation or weight loss after multiple injection, it was not
sufficient to suggest that the

Women Roles In The Things They Carried by Tim O Brien Essay
In this book there are three major women Linda, Martha, and Mary Anne. Linda s role is
positive yet very saddening because she in a way has given Tim O Brien the power to tell
stories so in depth using memories. Mary Anne s role is encouraging because she comes to
Vietnam and throughout the journey she discovers herself; she redefines the typical role of
women. Martha s role in this book could be considered positive because she is keeping up
Jimmy Cross s morale but, at the same time it could be negative because she leads him on. So the
role of women in the book is very influential in a positive way. Mary Anne is portrayed as the best

You just begin to see how she can t handle the war without going mad.
Martha is the first women we meet in the book. She is pretty much the typical stay at home war
girl. She writes letters to Lt. Jimmy Cross, they met at a college in New Jersey but nothing
sparked between them besides a friendship. There isn t any hope of them ever being together but
Jimmy Cross still thinks about her constantly everyday. In one particular letter she sends him a
good luck pebble. Martha wrote that she had found the pebble on the Jersey shoreline and carried
it in her breast pocket for several days (8). Jimmy Cross reads the letter spends hours wondering
who she was at the beach with, if she was with a man, if they were a couple. When the women sent
letters home, it really helped keep the morale of the soldier s. Although Martha continues to kind of
mislead Jimmy when she signs the letters love. Ted Lavender was shot in the head on his way back
from peeing. He lay with his mouth open (12).
Linda is the most important woman in the book. Even though she shows up in the end of the
book for the one story, she was Tim O Brien s first love. I just loved her. She had poise and great
dignity. Her eyes, I remember, were deep brown like her hair, and she was slender and very quiet
and fragile looking (228). This shows how much he loves her, he can recall much detail after so
long. The reason she is so important is, she is the one

Enkidu Vs Hector Essay
Gilgamesh Enkidu vs. Hector Patroclus
Enkidu and Gilgamesh did not know that they would become their best friends and almost
brothers in the beginning. Like, Achilles and Hector are both tragic heroes from the Trojan War,
on different sides; they are completely the opposite for they never became friends. Hector was the
best warrior on the Trojan side, Achilles was the best warrior on the Greek side, and both suffer
from arrogance and pride. Much like Gilgamesh does not like Enkidu early in Tablet 2, there is no
indication that this person will change Gilgamesh s life, or when Enkidu is talking to the woman,
getting ready to go back to the town, and wants to blindly take down Gilgamesh, showing that they
both have some arrogance there. Another ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
More people probably like Hector better, because he has a family. Hector is portrayed as a
family man earning him many brownie points. Because it looks like he is fighting for his family.
On the other hand, Achilles is fighting for himself a lot of the time. In addition, for most of the
Iliad he is not fighting. Achilles is into the war for the glory and blood of fighting. Achilles does
fight for his cousin; When Hector kills Patroclus while wearing Achilles armor. In comparison,
Enkidu s death seems like worst thing that could happen to Gilgamesh and it sets him on the
path to Utnapishtim, the quest for eternal life. In in different situation you could even say that
Gilgamesh and Enkidu s relationship is more that of Patroclus and Achilles. Since Achilles was
not fighting. Hector s strength is that he is honest and family man. His weakness is that he is
arrogant which led to his demise when he does not withdraw and go back into the walls. Achilles
great power is what made him invincible except his heel by his mother Thetis, and he is very
emotional. It is good when he lets his emotions feel Priam s petition to get back his dead son s
body, but being emotional is one of his faults too. Because he lets, his anger at Agamemnon

Lao Tzu s Courage In Scat By Carl Hiaasen
Lao Tzu, an ancient Chinese philosopher once said, Being deeply loved by someone gives you
strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage. Lao Tzu said that problems, war, and
fighting can be solved if nature and life are in balance. He also said that courage, peace, and
kindness can solve many of life s challenging problems. In the novel, Scat, Carl Hiaasen s

Is he suggesting that characters can have different sides? Instead, Hiaasen shows that people can

Over the years, animation has taken leaps and bounds to be where it is today. Especially Disney
Animation Studios, who have produced current movies like Tangled and Frozen, which rely solely
on computer rendering, display the latest in animation technology. But when one thinks of Disney
animation, one thing comes to mind always. Mickey Mouse. Mickey Mouse is the icon of Disney
animation, and rose quickly in popularity among the audience of the world. Mickey is an icon,
and can be identified by anyone anywhere due to how influential he is. But how did he come to
be? Mickey has advanced greatly over the years, and has led many of the strides in improvements
in animation and cinema, starting back in 1928. In test cartoons by Walt Disney, Mickey... Show

With the transition to color, the cartoon never looked back, and never was produced in black and
white again. Also, the style of Mickey himself was changed after this cartoon, with his eyes
changing from black dots to more expressive eyes over time, and his body became more flexible
where his joints lost their angularity (Frank). With these improvements, it became easier to
incorporate more emotion into the cartoons, and therefore make the cartoons more in depth. From
personal observation, I saw the improvements from prior cartoons being that the animation was
much more fluid, with Mickey s arms and other characters movements overall being decently fluid
and continuous. Another thing that is still a main factor of the cartoon is the use of music. The
music is the main driving force of the cartoon, and they do well at incorporating the music into the
comedy, and incorporating different characters with different musical styles and intentions. This
can be seen between Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, Mickey being the conductor and Donald
playing a flute to agitate Mickey. Beside the point, the cartoon is advanced compared to Steamboat
Willie, and it still imitates the use of repetitive movements for the characters in the shot (Mickey).
This increases the value of the comedy and helps the viewers interpret the situation on the screen.
This introduction to Technicolor along with the integration of synchronized sound leads to the next

Diction In The Most Dangerous Game, And The Necklace
Depth of a story relies greatly on the author s unique way of conveying a tone. There are many
great examples of diction in any genre of literature, whether is be of someone s feelings, a
setting, a mood, a person, or an object. Without it, a story would be dull. Diction connects our
senses to the actions, the setting, and the mood of a story, thus enveloping the reader into it,
which is exemplified beautifully in The Scarlet Ibis, The Most Dangerous Game, and The
Necklace. James Hurst s The Scarlet Ibis is a perfect example of effective use of dictation,
primarily the mood the described setting creates. In the very introduction, the narrator brings a
sense of distress, yet serenity: It was in the clove of seasons, summer was dead... Show more

Synovial Joints
Synovial joints, also known as diarthroidal joints, are the most common and movable type in the
body. The presence of lubricating synovial fluid encapsulated by joint ligaments distinguishes this
type of joint from others within the body90. OA most commonly occurs within the weight bearing
synovial jointsincluding the hip and the knee, which is why obesity is such a major risk factor of
OA4. The synovial jointcan be broken down into four major components: articular cartilage,
synovium, joint cavity filled with synovial fluid, and joint capsule ligament (Figure 1a) 60,115.
Ultimately, articular cartilage and the synovial fluid are the main constituents that contribute to the
proper lubrication properties of healthy and OA synovial joints.

Overall, articular cartilage is a very dense structure, lacking blood vessels and nerves that are found
in other tissues77. Chondrocytes are the cell types embedded within cartilage, and produce the
structural proteins that form the ECM. The major components of the ECM are water, type II
collagens, proteoglycans, aggrecan, and noncollagenous proteins such as fibronectins115,22. The
resulting osmotic pressure created within the wet and dry components of the ECM work in
harmony to support the mechanical forces applied to cartilage77. The water is retained in the ECM
by aggrecan, the primary structural proteoglycan which is based on a long hyaluronic acid
backbone with highly charged glycosaminoglycan (GAG) side chains, such as chondroitin sulfate
(CS) and keratin sulfate (KS)26. Altogether, these components are what create the depth dependent

Managing Human Relations
Definition of Human Relations In our business world today, people who enter the workforce are
discovering that interpersonal skills represent a very important category of basic skills valued by
employers.
These skills can also help us to cope with a wide range of work life issues and conflicts that
surface in our lives. Besides that, these skills will also help us in areas such as interviewing to get a
job in the future, improving our personal communication skills and building and thus maintaining
productive relationships with others in the workplace. These skills lead to a term which is known
as human relations. Human relations is defined in its broadest sense which covers all types of
interactions among people. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the reasons is because organizations are advancing more to the age of
Information Technology (IT) and many things in the world nowadays are done by machines
and requires a minimal amount of manpower. This will lessen the job opportunities and even
those who have worked in the particular workplace will be forced to resign or quit their
respective jobs. As an effect of this, many organizations will shortlist those workers who are
performing at a full pace and achieving more goals than others to remain in the company and
then hand in a resignation letter for those workers who are underperforming or those who failed
to achieve their goals. In order to tackle this issue, many companies nowadays spend most of their
time to train their employees so that they could be better workers and would help the company to
achieve more success in the future. When the company trains their employees, the employees are
expected to understand on what is required of them during the day at work. Employees are also
required to continuously build relationships with their employers or managers of the company and
also learn to accept the other employees which are working together with them. In addition,
another major reason on why human relations is important in workplaces is because most
companies are growing bigger and bigger compared to few years back. Many large companies

Prescription Drugs And Its Effects Essay
When patients have already faced the situation that they could not afford their prescription
brand, they would turn to other measures. One of those measures would be to use a different
brand to substitute the same drug to treat their condition. However, this drug may not be as
effective as their previous one. For example, Epipens are a very popular drug to treat individuals
with severe allergies. If they experience an allergic reaction, they would rely on an Epipen
injection to offset it. While it is a very popular and widely used allergy treating prescription, its
substantial price increase over the years have made it quite an expensive one. With being quite
costly, patients may turn to finding an inexpensive brand, anticipating that it would have an
equivalent effect as their previous prescription. However, according to Rubenfire from Modern
Health Care, [f]or most drugs or devices, patients might look to a competitor for a cheaper price.
But Dr. Bobby Lanier, a Fort Worth, Texas based allergist, said most of his patients end up using the
name brand EpiPen rather than competitors such as Adrenaclick (Rubenfire). Thus, this points out
that alternative brands claiming to have equal effects as the name brand may not be as efficient to
treating the patient s condition. With its cheaper price and yet ineffectiveness, it may lead patients
to worsen their overall health due to the circumstances given by the new drug. In other words, their
health is at risk since they would have

  • 2. Darcy Demonstrates Pride During The Proposal Scene In... Ebony Wesley Dr. J. K. Tarpley English 2322 61801 30 November 2017 Journal #7 Pride and Prejudice JOURNAL # 7 PRIDE AND PREJUDICE The proposal scene in Chapter 34 (quote from here) is one of the most famous passages in all of English literature. It represents very well the two main themes of the novel that appear in the title: pride and prejudice. First, look up and define each word: pride and prejudice. Then respond to the following questions. Pride: satisfaction derived from one s own achievements, the achievements of those with whom one is closely associated. Prejudice: a preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience. Part One: Darcy s pride and prejudice a.Explain how Darcy demonstrates pride during the proposal scene; use quotes from Chapter 34 to support your claim and EXPLAIN how the quotes support it. Even though Mr. Darcy had the best intentions when he proposed to Elizabeth, his word choice was not the best. The narrator describes his dialect in the following quote, He spoke well; but there were feelings besides those of the heart to be detailed; and he was no more eloquent on the subject of tenderness than of pride. His sense of her inferiority of it being a degradation... (Austen 34). He must find it sweet and heartwarming that he is choosing to lower his social class for love, but he also seems to imply that he is better than her. Elizabeth feels insulted that he would say something like that to her. She responds to Mr. Darcy by saying, You chose to tell me that you liked me against your reason, against your will, and even against your character? (Austen 34). To her it probably seems like he is settling for her, when it comes to her social status. b. Explain how Darcy demonstrates prejudice during the proposal scene; use quotes from Chapter 34 to support your claim and EXPLAIN how the quotes support it Elizabeth calls out Mr. Darcy on his prejudice towards Mr. Wickham. Instead of paying attention to the type of person he is, Mr.Darcy makes it seems like his current financial situation defines him. Elizabeth states the following in the heated argument between her and Mr. Darcy, You have reduced him to his present state of poverty, comparative poverty. You have ... • 3. A Brief Note On The, Inc. Annie Tran 4B Bus. Management Fortune 500 Research Paper Project This research paper project will be about Amazon.com, Inc. Amazon.com is a shopping site online and it can be access anywhere as long as you have internet. It is a well known internet based retailer and it s available worldwide. Amazon Inc is known for its fastness and convenience, which is a better way to shop for things nowadays, because not everyone wants to go through a hassle of looking for things in store, and having to carry shopping bags from place to place. Amazon.com sells everything, from electronic devices, DVDs, digital movies/music, to household furniture, books, school supplies and beauty products. In my opinion, Amazon.com attracts buyers because they sell products with good deals and sometimes come with free shipping which is always a plus. Specially, Amazon.com sells some products that you rarely or never see in retailer stores. The primarily products that they are known for are their signature Kindle, which is similar to a tablet but its common use is for reading e books. Amazon.com gets their products from retailers like Nordstrom, Target, Michaels, ... and individual sellers that want to sell their stuff, either used or brand new. Some big companies take advantage and sell their goods through Amazon.com so they can sell more products. Based on the statistics of Fortune 500, Amazon.com ranked number 29, right before Wells Fargo and after Citigroup, 2 common banks in the United States. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Hip Hop And Its Impact On African American Culture In the 70 s a new genre of music was created in South Bronx, New York. That genre is known as Hip Hop. Over the years Hip Hop has gained popularity becoming arguably one of the most influential forms of music to date. Hip Hop artist or Mc s used it to express their views on a multitude of topics to their fans. These topics range wildly from the more serious subjects like the everyday life of people living in the projects, personal obstacles they had to endure, and politics. As well as, more lighthearted topics like enjoying your time in a night club or hanging out with friends. For those reasons, I believe Hip Hop is representative of the African American community. Even after 25 years hip hop has continued to reflect issues that are going on in black communities. I think that hip hop has transformed from just a genre of music to more along the line of being a culture. Two and half... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even after former President Obama quote If I had a son, he d look like Trayvon. In which people thought Obama was trying to entice a racial divide. I believe President Obama was simply trying to say that the event leading up to Trayvon death could have happened to any African American son. That notion was important because young African Americans are often viewed as hoodlums or thugs. For that reason, I think that if artist continue to make songs with lyrics like that in them young African American children will understand how things should be. Things like understanding that you should judge individuals by their character and not by how they look or where they ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. The Pros And Cons Of Federalism, Unitary And Confederal... Bhaumik Mehta POS 2041: American National Government Fall 2017 Instructor: Douglas Rivero Analyze the pros and cons of federalism, unitary and confederal systems. Explain to me whether you believe that we should keep our federal system or whether we should abandon it in favor of a different one. Before discussing the pros and cons of different governmental systems, let s know about the federal, unitary, and confederal systems? There are three systems of governmentexist today: federal, unitary, and confederal. Federal system is a medium centralized, Unitary system is highly centralized, and confederal system has a low level centralization. Furthermore, federal system believes in the strong national government which shares power with the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The biggest advantage of federal system is check and balances a political system where each branch of government have authority to keep checks on other branches and to influence the decisions of other branches; the political power is not concentrated in the hands of individuals or groups. Now, let s see the cons of the federal system. Cons of the federal system are: prevention of the creation of a national policy, lack of accountability, and potential for corruption. Federalismalso causes confusion between the local governments and the national government as well. (Federalism Pros and Cons List, 2015) For an example, the United State doesn t have a single policy on issues, which often leads to the confusion. Also, power of authority can create a possible atmosphere for corruption at local and national level. For an example, if majority of the congress wants to pass a law on something and local states do not agree on it, then the local government can agree on the law to get something in return in form of money or favors! Second, advantages of unitary system are simplicity, less corruption, simplified economic policies, and high level of national pride. Unitary government is simple. Fewer people are involved in the decision making process so that decisions are made faster and more efficiently. (apecsecadmin, 2015) In a unitary system, only few self motivated people have direct access to the decision makers, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. John Locke s Second Treatise On Civil Government Freedom, a concept essential to the human experience, should have some limitations. In addition, I will explore the definition of freedom, how the power of government is also limited and how these limitations fit into the theories of Hobbes, Locke, and Aristotle. There should be limits to freedom because unlimited freedom can endanger the liberties of others. Without limits to freedom, individuals can use their natural rights to cause harm and hurt others. Freedom, as defined as by John Locke, is to be free from any superior power on earth, and not to be under the will or legislative authority of men. If the individual exists in a society, then Locke theorizes their liberty exists under the legislative power established by consent in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Locke s Second Treatise on Civil Government, the philosopher theorizes on the limitations of freedom. To begin with, Locke makes the critical point that in the state of nature men are perfectly free to order their actions, and dispose of their possessions and themselves, in any way they like, without asking anyone s permission. However this freedom is subject only to limits set by the law of nature. Locke believes that the limitations to freedom are dictated by the law of nature. In Locke s view, everyone is equal in the state of nature, with the same advantages and privileges. Therefore, no individual has the right to abuse the liberty of others, even if they have the freedom and ability to do so. This abuse, termed as license, exists outside the state of nature and Locke believes that this power is not granted to anyone. This is especially important when considering the power of the government. For Locke, the power of the government must be limited to the laws of nature. Once the government starts acting outside the laws of nature, the government becomes illegitimate. Aristotle also feels that freedom should be used for the peace and prosperity of others. In Aristotle s Nicomachean Ethics, there exists two different types of freedom: positive and negative. Negative freedom is the freedom from something, such as barriers or government coercion. Positive freedom, which is recommended by Aristotle, is the freedom to pursue an end. For Aristotle, the ideal end is a complete life, full of virtue. This life, full of happiness and friendship, does not exist to harm or foul to others. Without these limitations, positive freedom would not be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Conservative M.P Boris Johnson s satirical article Don t let Ed Miliband sink this country with his commie slab of rock, was published May 4th 2015, three days before the British elections in the Conservative leaning newspaper The Daily Telegraph. In this article, Johnson uses a variety of satirical techniques such as the use of diminutive language, metaphors, satirical tone, rhetorical questions and others, in order to present Ed Miliband, representing of the Labour party, as a ridiculous leader and a regression for Britain s politics. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Johnson uses the headline with metaphorical words and diminutive language in order to portray how Ed Miliband will cause a downturn in the U.K Don t let Ed Miliband sink this country with his commie slab of rock . The use of the metaphorical word sink connotes the idea of the connection Miliband has with regression as the country will be ruined if he comes to power. Furthermore, Johnson uses the diminutive commie slab in order to decrease the importance of communism. Johnson uses the word commie instead of communist to indicate the ridicule ideology that Miliband presents. Hence, the headline, which s purpose is to catch the attention of the reader, directly associates communism with regression therefore a threat to the British country. The headline facilitates Johnson fulfil his purpose of entertain the Conservative reader as the headline causes humor in the reader. Johnson uses this metaphor in a satirical way to compare Miliband s actions to the once communist East Germany, which is constantly seen as the grey Germany. East Germany was also, in comparison to West Germany underdeveloped; when Johnson contrasts Miliband s actions to East Germany he is associating Ed Miliband or Red Ed with Communism and regression. • 9. Short Story On Deadweather Nobody lived on Deadweather but us and the pirates. It wasn t hard to understand why. For one thing, the weather was atrocious. Eleven months out of twelve, it was brutally hot and humid, with no wind at all, so on a bad day the air felt like a hot, soggy blanket smothering you from all sides. And the other month was September, which meant hurricanes. Then there was the volcano. It hadn t actually blown in ages, but it belched smoke and shook the earth enough to scare away anybody who might ve overlooked the pirates and the weather. The only reason it didn t scare me, even though plenty of things do, was because I d been born and raised halfway up its slope and didn t know any different. That s how I felt about the pirates, too. There were two kinds on Deadweather: the normal ones, who hung around down in Port Scratch, drinking and getting into knife fights whenever they weren t off raiding Cartager gold ships; and the busted down, broken ones, who d lost too many limbs or eyes or organs to crew a ship, but not enough to kill them outright. A few of those stayed in the Scratch, patching together a living in the taverns and the gun shops, but most of them hobbled up the mountain to work for Dad on the ugly fruit plantation. The consumption of some goods and services results to ecological degradation more than we may realize. The things that we purchase contribute directly or indirectly to pollution, climate change, resources depletion and biodiversity loss. Ecological degradation refers to the deterioration in environmental quality from ambient concentrations of pollutants and other activities and processes such as improper land use and natural disasters (OECD, 1997). Mining provides a number of jobs to a large number of people along with being a great source for government revenues. Despite its great contribution to the economy, the effects that it has on the environment appears to be of great concern. For example rainforests are a great and important source of wood, oxygen and medicine for everyone. Rainforests in the amazon in particular are known for its alluvial deposits of gold that are found at river banks after major floods and river channels. In order for miners to mine gold, hydraulic mining techniques are often used. This method involves the process of blasting at the riverbanks that results to irreversible damage to trees and animals. Through the process of separating the mercury and the sediment from gold yielding gravel deposits, miners who appear to be less equipped than industrial miners sometimes may ignore the release of some of the mercury into the river. The mercury is then likely to enter the food chain through water animals as well as their predators. Highly compound cyanide is also used to separate gold from sediment and rock. In spite of all precautionary measures, it sometimes escapes into the surrounding environment (Rose, 2012). Therefore those who consume fish might be at great risk of contamination of such toxins. Jim had suffered through many hard times, but he always persevered. He faced a huge disappointment when he found out that Long John Silver wasn t the clean and pleasant tempered (66) man he always thought him to be. Instead he turns out to be cruel and heartless (66). Jim realizes how cruel Silver really is when he overhears Silver talking about the mutiny that they were planning. He witnessed Silver openly murder a man who refused to join the mutiny. Even after seeing that, he stayed composed and continued trying to get the treasure. Unfortunately, Jim is a very impulsive boy, which leads him to make foolish mistakes. When the ship was just arriving at the island, he jumped to shore and separated from the group. He risked his life and realized that it was a dumb thing to do. Jim s impulsive personality also led him to do good things. For example, he killed Israel, a cruel pirate, right away. By the later part of the 1800 s New York and Chicago were some of the largest cities in the world and both had populations that exceeded a million. With the growing population, the economy s stability began to fluctuate. The instability within the states gave rise to two distinct populations within America, the upper and the working classes. Theodore Dreiser, knowing the volatile state America was built upon, highlighted the economic differences between the wealthy and the poor in his novel Sister Carrie. On the others side of the unbalanced American social scale, the rich were living in superb houses and apartments that bespoke of wealth and comfort. Have you ever heard someone imply that all police officers love donuts? This is an example of a common stereotype . It does have some comedic value, but it obviously can t be true. Now consider a more serious stereotype about police officers: that all caucasian officers are racist . This statement has no comedic value, and illustrates the power of overgeneralization; it gives a bad reputation to all caucasian officers, and actually has negative implications for officers of all skin colors. Where do you think the origin of this particular stereotype is? The answer is other stereotypes. There actually are racist police officers, and stereotypes fuel racism. Cycles of gross generalizations create hatred, and promote inequality. For these reasons, they are important to understand and discuss. For this assignment, I will explore the history and meaning of three stereotypes of African American women outlined by Melissa Harris Perry in her book Sister Citizen. I hope to attain a better understanding of the sociological and political forces behind them. An Description Of An Exact Dissipation Model For Arbitrary Referee Report: Manuscript ID# OL: 280139 PAPER DESCRIPTION In the paper titled An exact dissipation model for arbitrary photonic Fock state transport in waveguide QED systems , Chen et al. have presented a dissipation model to study the Fock and coherent state transport through waveguide QED (wQED) systems. As the main novelty of their work, they have modelled the environment as a 3D scattering channel (described in a real space picture similar to the waveguide modelling) and it has been shown that a reduced Hamiltonian can be obtained for arbitrary photon number Fock state which can describe the photonic transport with a restricted eigenstate. To illustrate, one , two , N photon and coherent state examples are presented. Finally, two simple geometries of the scattering channel are considered namely the uniform medium and a slab waveguide. Authors have also very briefly pointed out the applicability of their model in cavity QED. COMMENTS AND DECISION Overall the paper has interesting findings and is systematically presented. In particular, the modelling of the environment as a non excitable 3D scattering channel, is the key attraction in this work. Moreover, the authors have made claims which seems not to be exaggerated. The dramatist and poet Samuel Beckett, born in 1906 in Ireland, can definitely be addressed as one of the most influential writers of the twentieth century. Samuel Beckett has been attributed the label of the last modernist as well as the first post modernist. His plays are filled with dark humour and absurdities, Beckett s play Waiting for Godot 1, which he composed between 1948 1949, is a good example of his minimalistic style and stage setting. • 35. Literary Analysis Of Reginald Gibbons s Wood Chopping wood, it seems like a task that is unnecessary in the modern world. Have you ever chopped wood? Have you ever held an axe in your hands and then with all your might, hammer down on a piece of wood with the hopes it will split right in half? Imagine a three foot axe in hand and your only task is to split the maple log in front of you. All around you are trees and the other logs and pieces of wood you have gathered to either process or store for later use as fuel, but how much is enough fuel? Reginald Gibbons uses graphic imagery, and imaginative metaphors in his poem, Wood , to illustrate the difficult task of chopping wood through a not very obvious first person perspective, but upon further inspection, the poem uses imagery to establish the setting and also explores the different thoughts the unnamed character has. Right away, I noticed the large amount of imagery that was used in this poem A cylinder of maple / set in place, feet spread apart / and the heavy maul, fat as a hammer ( Wood 1 3). The first paragraph gives an accurate depiction of the action and visuals of what it is like to be outside on a cold day to split wood. Gibbons uses a heavy amount of imagery, mainly sight, in this poem. Each stanzahas some form of imagery within it. The choice of words and stylehe decided to use puts a very weighty and, at one point, even put a darker mood over the poem. Last year alone, over 35000 elephants were killed for their ivory tusks. Ivory is sold illegally for up to $1000 per pound, and the tusks are often carved into jewelry, religious figurines, utensils, and other small trinkets. Around 2000 zebras remain in the wild, and these animals are sought after for their black and white striped skins, which are often made into clothing or accessories. The surviving lion population is a mere 15% of what it used to be, and that is because farmers keep killing them before the lions kill their livestock. Lions are often hunted for fun too, most recently Cecil. The black rhino population is down 97.6% since 1960, and these animals are killed for their valuable horns. Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Case Study Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is a lethal genetic X linked disease results from the mutation in the reading frame of the dystrophin protein, and it affects mostly boys in their muscle and cardiopulmonary function. Although there are no effective treatments to cure DMD patients right now, scientists consistently explore more methods to come up with the practical treatments. One of the most popular and valid approaches is a geneediting therapeutic method CRISPR/Cas9 Genome Editing. It adapts from the natural systems in bacteria, and it can generate targeted gene modifications to target specific DNAsequence. Then it introduces shifts within exons to restore the reading frame, so it can express a partial functional dystrophin protein.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Secondly, although both studies use CRISPR Cas9 as an agent to treat the DMD genetic disease, the principle of the mechanism is different. Young et al. used the normal bacterial protein Cas9 as a source to modify DMD; however, Lee et al. developed non viral Cas9 to induce HDR. The two methods obviously would have two different outcomes. Hence, the third difference between them was the phenotype expressed after the treatment. Yong et al. can restore a functional dystrophin protein by reframing the gene, but the method could only reduce a phenotype similar to Becker Muscular Dystrophy (BMD) phenotype. Lee et al. corrected the dystrophin mutation, including point mutation and small deletions, too their wild type sequence, which could regenerate fully functional wild type dystrophin. The advantage of both studies is that both method have tested on in vivo and in vitro, which allows the future studies to work on the development of ex vivo gene correction so that a better treatment for DMD could be generated. However, both studies still have some defects relatively. For example, the protocol of the Yong et al. study was unclear, which is significant for DMD patient as the misleading protocol could be fetal to the patients.
