Novelist and essayist, Amy Tan, in her essay, Mother Tongue , emphasizes the
hardships faced by those who speak with limited English. Tan strives to broaden
awareness of the damaging stereotypes thrown upon those with limited English,
creating a personal and reflective tone that develops her attitude toward her
mother. Tan uses connotative diction to develop her attitudes towards her mother.
As a child, Tan was ashamed of her mother s English. But as she grew, she came to
the realization that she, in fact, uses the same English her own mother uses. Her
relationship with her mother strained due to the boundaries of language. Tan s
mother s broken English causes tension and resentment from daughter to mother.
Tan s regrettable experiences, helping her mother with phone calls and
appointments, led her to have a negative attitude towards her mother at an early
age. As Tan grew up she realized the injustices found in the world, especially those
directed at broken English. Her perception of her mother changes as she ages.
When she is older, she is conscious of the struggles her mother faces. She exudes all
respect to her mother, for her mother s English was the most familiar rhythm she
has ever come to know. Tan also uses oxymora to develop her attitudes in her
mother/daughter relationship. Tan sees that her mother s speech is Impeccably
broken, . To be impeccable is to be of the highest standards. To be impeccable is to
be faultless; flawless. Tan views her mother s English to be so flawlessly broken that
no one can fix it. This one oxymoroncontributes to the entire piece, fitting in the
crevices. Tan, at an early age, was ashamed of her mother s English, the sentence
structure and simple word choice, because it was broken. The oxymora in this
piece reflect the idea of the stereotypes drawn from society. Those who do not
speak perfect English are not validated. For Tan s mother s speech was so
flawlessly unfixable, that it was unable to be understood. A reader would think that
those words are contradictory, that something flawless could not be broken or
shattered, but indeed can. Because something so broken, can be so flawless because
it s as broken as it can possibly be. Tan uses

What were the events and improvements in ship design that lead to the discovery of
the New World and enabled the subsequent expansion in global trade? In this paper I
will examine the changes and improvements in European ship design that allowed for
the first transatlantic voyage to the New World. Though the Europeans were not the
first to develop the concept of the ship, they were the first to take this concept and
use it to cross the Atlantic. Even before Columbus sailed across the Atlantic to the
New World, Europe had a long maritime history. Before the 15th and 16th century
European ship design had been relatively slow to advance from its initial stages.
But during the 15th and 16th century European ship design accelerated at break
neck speeds to advance to the point of enabling the Age of Exploration. Dr.

Comparing and Contrasting the Virginia Colony and the Massachusetts Colony The
first two colonies to be successfully established in what would become the United
States of America were the Colony of Virginia and the Colony of Massachusetts. The
Colony of Virginia was established first, in 1607, under James I with the London
Company. Later in 1620, Pilgrims established the Colony of Massachusettsunder the

QAR which stands for Question Answer Relationship. Is a strategy that helps you
understand the four different types of questions that are asked before, during, and
after reading. Therefore, knowing how to answer these questions will help you get
more answers correct and help you find the answers faster.
Now, where I can find answers to questions? QAR has two main categories. The
first category is in the text/book: which means that the answers are supplied by the
author. The second category is in my head: which means that the answers are based
on the reader s ideas and experiences (prior knowledge).
Let s look at the four different types of QAR s. So, if you look at your sheet of paper
titled the Question Answer Relationships, you see that there are many boxes.

Although females had push into the right direction, they still did face some
adversity. Many fully employed women defined themseleves as homemakers ,
outside the sphere of wage work (Abelson, 117). This shows that even with all
