On March 26, 2014 I visited a one artist photography exhibition held in the Thomas
F. Riley terminal at John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana, California. This exhibition

I liked the composition of this photo. It was taken from underneath, looking down
the length of the pier. What I loved about this photo is that the pillars closest to the
lens are much distorted and the Pacific Ocean has soothing yet eerie radium like

The bare bones of the set of Hamilton: An American Musical is essentially some
scaffolding, stairs, exposed brick, and well placed rope. These seemingly simple
elements come together to make an intricate time lapse through our nations
history. The set designer for Hamilton is David Korins. The set looks like the belly of
a ship and the bakery from Broadway s Sweeny Todd had a love child. The set floor
consists of a painted on wood grain that looks very realistic and rustic. The floor is
also composed of two giant turntables within each other. Korins says he did base his
design of the set off of old ship building sketches. Inspired by the Capitol
Building s round dome and the dramatic concept of operating theater, Korins quickly
landed on an essential component of the Hamilton staging: the turntable.
As early sketches like the ones above show, Korins set involves a double turntable
arrangement, framed by scaffolding and a second level catwalk, designed in the style
of the ships that brought Alexander Hamilton from the British West Indies to

Grade inflation is a new pandemic within America and academia in general. As
more people enter university there is an undeniable trend; average grades keep
rising. There are two popular theories behind the reason, the first being that the
quality of student s work has rose and students are simply performing better and
receiving higher marks. The second theory is that as our cultural ideas of success
leads us to the assumption that a gradeless than an A is a failure, that teachers and
professors have begun grading more leniently to encourage more students to
receive high marks. This is a problem for three reasons. Firstly, raising average
GPA s allow less differentiation between different levels of students; in an easy
course a genius student will receive the same grades as their average colleagues.
Secondly, a system where the average student can receive A s leads to gifted

Before starting this project, I knew very little about photography, photographers, or
exactly how much impact photographical images have had on our society. I have
never taken a photography class, or researched too in depth about specific pictures
or photographers. This project has allowed me to delve deeper into the world of
photography in order to understand just how much influence pictures can have over
society s beliefs, emotions, and understandings . I have have chosen two highly
influential photographers, Diane Arbus and Dorothea Lange, who I have found to
both resonate with me and perfectly capture human emotions in way that moves
others. Diane Arbus was a photographer in the 1950 s and 60 s. Starting out as a
fashion photographer, Arbus quickly moved on to photographing more impactful
pictures, usually of societal outsiders ( The Cost of Diane, 2016). With striking
images of freaks, as she once named her subject, Arbus perfectly depicted feelings of
loneliness and struggles with identity. I believe Arbus resonates with me so much
