Departure
Most people when they reach adulthood want to move away from home and to start a new life. In the
book Departure by Sherwood Anderson, George Willard, is a young man that grew up in Winesburg,
Ohio with his family. George is a boy who is growing into manhood and wants to branch out into the
world on his own. George s hometown represents his childhood and him deciding to leave shows that
he wants to become independent. He is also supported in his decision to go to the city from his family
and the people in Winesburg. These details of Winesburg are familiar with George but he seeks out to
be his own person by leaving. To start, there are many reasons why George chose to leave Winesburg
and can be seen in the way he describes the town. Firstly, it is stated in paragraph 13, He stayed that
way for a long time and when he aroused himself and again looked out of the car window, the town of
Winesburg had disappeared and his life there had become but a background on which to paint ... Show

For example, Gertrude Wilmot, who is an older woman that works at the Winesburg post office.
Though she never paid a lot of attention to George, she sent him off with a Good luck, which shows
that he has the support of the town in his decision. Also, Tom Willard said to George, Keep your eyes
on your money. Be awake. That s the ticket. Don t let anyone think you re a greenhorn. By saying this
Tom shows his support and acceptance of George growing up and leaving. Finally, in paragraph five it
states, In the fall and spring he spends his Sundays fishing in Lake Erie. He has a round red face and
small blue eyes. He knows the people in the towns along his railroad better than a city man knows the
people who live in his apartment building. Tom is an element of Winesburg that George illustrates in a
certain way that shows that George wants to be more than what he is now and go to different places

Pete Seeger We Shall Overcome Essay
Over the period, We Shall Overcome by Pete Seeger quickly developed into one of the most popular
songs of the civil rights movement. Released in 1959, this song remained an important civil justice
song not only within the movement, but also across the globe. As mentioned earlier, the act of singing
together is a powerful tool to unite individuals and to create a sense of community. This song evoked
vitality and strong emotions across the south were most of the blacks lived as well as rejuvenating
courage, and confidence in the search for freedom in their struggles. The complex process of the song,
We Shall Overcome reveals much about the improvisational and hybrid nature of not just African
American musical culture, but also the movement ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Then later, Frank Hamilton, started singing as a faster tempo, which made the song now have a strong
pulse (F, 2010). The song has an AABA structure like a blues song with simple straightforward lyrics
which makes it easy for large groups to sing (Graham, 2015). The constant changes that were made to
the song as it evolved gives us some insight as to what the people wanted and needed from the song.
Originally the song lyrics were written as I will overcome , as it was meant be sung as a hymn or in a
religious context ( We Shall Overcome , 2014). However, in the context of the social movement, the
needs of the group changed and so the lyrics reflected that change. The change from I to we
demonstrates a sense of community and belonging, as well as a group identity. From simply changing
the words will to shall it is evident that the group is trying to convey a message. Through an analysis
of the words will expresses an intention, whereas Shall carries extra weight and force and is associated
with the language of law, regulations, and directives and to express that which is mandatory or
inevitable ( We Shall Overcome ,

Essay on Huck Finn
Huckleberry Finn
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is one of the greatest, most daring novels in the world. Mark
Twain s style helps to realistically portray early America. Mark Twain tells the story through the voice
of Huck, the very kindhearted main character. Everything that Huck says reflects the racism and black
stereotypes typical of the era. This has lead to many conflicts from readers since the novel was first
printed. However, the story has inspired some. James W. Tuttleton says in an article he wrote that
Huck Finn is regularly denounced as racist trash (The San Francisco Chronicle [1885] 6) . Yet, again
to oppose that is a quote by a reader, Anyone who is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If the author wished for the story to be racist, he would not write about the way Huck felt towards Jim.
He [Twain] tried to evince the beauty of Huck and Jim s friendship by sealing it in flawed and humble
English. ( Race Traitor [D Andrea 1992]). It is seen some throughout the book that Huck sees Jim as a
white man. Huck tells the reader this when he realizes that Jim misses his own family and children, I
do believe he cared just as much for his people as white folks does for their n (150). Any words that
seem to humiliate African Americans is simply a casual use of Southern slang and not purposeful.
Huck talks the way he was taught according to the culture then to stylize a specific behavior toward
black slaves. However, his feelings toward Jim throughout the novel has taught Huck to conquer
certain stereotypes, such as black stupidity and apathy. Huckleberry still
3 believes Jim to be inappropriate and stubborn at times, as in their exchange over the Biblical story of
King Solomon and the French language. Huck doesn t tell Jim but says to the reader, If he got a notion
in his head once, there warn t no getting it out again...I see it warn t no use wasting words you can t
learn a nigger to argue (76 79).
Twain uses his main character, Huckleberry Finn, to convey his literary style and therefore makes it
important to think about this

Madoff
Bernie Madoff amp; the Worst Pyramid Scheme in U.S. History It is said that we are the product of
our upbringing, so it probably would not surprise you to learn that the biggest and worst financial
fraud committed through a pyramid scheme in US History, was achieved by a man who was raised by
parents that also commit financial frauds. Bernie Madoff was raised watching his parents Ralph and
Sylvia Madoff run a business that was not successful in the financial trading world. That company was
named Gibraltar Securities. Due to the fact that Sylvia failed to accurately report their company s
financial condition, the SEC closed the business in 1963 and started its investigative proceedings to
determine if charges were needed to be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(Cook, 2014) The question becomes, how did Bernie pull this off for so many years? Actually having
a legitimate legal running successful company to further your reputation as a highly successful
investor really helps, but how do you have billions of dollars invested in your company, that is
ultimately already lost before you even cash the check given to you? That in itself must have taken a
lot of time and energy, and when the scheme was discovered, Bernie stated that he alone ran his
scheme. For someone that has no problem stealing money from his investors, it seems odd that his
reason to take all the credit for the running of this scheme would be to protect the others that were
involved. Is he really protecting them or is his ego so big that he wants all the credit? That is a
question that we will never have the answer to unless Bernie himself answers it. But there is one
person who has come forward. Frank DiPascali, the former financial chief, became the star witness
against Bernie Madoff. Mr. Depascali was very forthcoming in giving information and he detailed
how the scheme was able to be hidden for so long, and how it all comes down to technology. What?
How does technology have anything to do with hiding a pyramid scheme? Well, Bernie had an
emergency operations building that housed different versions of computers, software programs,
printers, copiers, paper, company logos, and company

The Pros And Cons Of A Hero
Superman, Batman, Ironman, Hulk, Thor, etc. These superheroes were all heroes in the world with a
superpower; however, in reality a hero is much more than having an amazing superpower. All people
have the potential to become a hero, and the traits and actions that make up a hero are inside each and
every one of us. Heroes are all around us in both the modern and past world. These heroes are created
in many ways, but it doesn t take a risky moment, or it doesn t take saving the world to be a hero. A
hero isn t always the strongest human being that risks their life, a hero is someone who makes a
positive impact in someone else s life and overcomes challenges. To begin, Bob Riley said, Hard times
don t create heroes. It is during the hard times when the hero within us is revealed. This quote proves
how a hero faces hard times, and a hero defeats these obstacles that face him or her. In addition, there
are many examples of heroes in the modern world. These unique heroes in the world are regular
people like you and me. The only difference is, these unique heroes take an extra step and make a
footprint in the world. To make this print, there were, and are many situations and natural disasters in
the word that help bring out these heroes. For example, during the 9/11 attacks there were dozens of
heroes. People from all different backgrounds became a hero saving others lives or having a positive
impact in a random stranger s life. One hero during this troublesome time in

Coal Ash Spills In North Carolina
The Dangers of Coal Ash Spills in North Carolina. What is coal ash, and how does it relate to North
Carolina? Coal ash is a mixture of chemicals and metals that are a threat to the environment and the
well being of others. The dangers of coal ash increase as the ponds they are stored in are being located
near power plants sitting beside our water sources. Sadly, we Americans use coal for a significant
number of things. This may include electricity, steel, cement, etc. North Carolina has 30 additional
sites of coal manufacturing located in 14 different locations. As a community, we continuously take
resources that we need such as water for granted. We don t realize how contamination of our water
sources can affect our daily lives.

We should invest in cleaner alternatives that will not only be better for us but the environment.
Although coal is used for electricity, there are other ways to produce electricity like water power, wind
generators, and solar energy. Water power, or hydropower is power that is derived from the weight of
the water. Hydroelectric power plants use dams or rivers to store water to then release the water
through turbines that spin it that produces electricity. Wind generators are like water power but instead
of water its wind. Wind turbines converts the wind s energy into electric energy. Solar energy is
similar but the energy comes from the sun. Some people use solar energy for their homes so they save
money and will not have to pay an electric bill. Instead of burning coal, there are other alternatives as

The Pacific Bluefin Tuna Is An Valuable Valued Specie
Introduction The Pacific Bluefin Tuna is an incredibly valued specie who has been doomed for
decades. Although the IUCN has listed this specie as vulnerable, they are far becoming more
endangered to the point of extinction. Their population remains at 4% of what they were before
commercial fishers began capturing them by the thousands (The IUCN Red List, 2014). The Pacific
Bluefin Tuna is one of the largest and fastest fishes in the ocean. Their are three distinctions of the
Bluefin Tuna; the Southern, Atlantic, and in this case, the Pacific which is located primarily in the
northern hemisphere of the Pacific Ocean. They are special species because they can easily adapt to

Overfishing is a problem because Bluefin Tuna is responsible for keeping population numbers in
check, thus creating detrimental effects if the biodiversity were to be threaten and the ecosystem were
to become imbalanced. Furthermore, the Bluefin Tuna have fallen victim to becoming targeted and
non targeted species by fisherman. Purse seine fishing is the number one fishing method used to catch
the Tuna. However, long line fishing also poses as a threat because they are unintentionally caught in
by catches, creating an unnecessary waste. In addition, studies demonstrate that Japan has the largest
number of catches. Japan s economy has the most to loose if they do not protect their valued specie.
They have made little efforts for change and the ISC concluded that current levels of fishing have now
become unsustainable. It has been concluded that this stock will continue to decline in 2018 (Nickson,
2018). This specie has fallen a tragedy of the commons model due to individuals trying to gain the
greatest benefit, without realizing what the long term effects would be when the demands of the
resource overwhelms the supply. This will hurt the well being of multiple societies, and most
important, the well being of the Bluefin Tuna. The ISC stated that these species need new
management plans to ensure it s sustainability. With conservation efforts of the IATTC and WCPFC,
there will be a plan for rebuilding spawning populations, placing a

T. F. Thistleton Dyer s The Ghost World
The Banshee, originally known as the Irish fairy creature, originated in the Celtic Isles of Ireland,
Scotland, and Great Britain. This legend has been passed down through generations due to its
persistent haunting nature. The angry female spirit flies several feet above the ground at night
terrifying people with her ghostly screams. A Banshees high pitched shrieking foresees the death of
someone shortly to come.
The ghostly woman has no physical body, but she may appear wearing a long funeral robe and
unkempt hair. Though this is the most common, it is only one of the several different forms in which
the banshee may appear. The old hag is also said to be seen as a washerwoman washing the blood off
someone s clothes who is about to die. She may also appear as a unearthly, beautiful young woman.
No matter her age she almost always is characterized as wearing a long flowing robe with long hair of
the same color.
This fairy woman has been known in Gaelic myths and legends for centuries, but as early as 1898 she
made her first appearance in literature. In T. F. Thistleton Dyer s The Ghost World he explains how
only ancient families are honored with the visit of the Banshee. Although through not much honor but

Prejudice In Pride And Prejudice
Are there both good and bad types of pride and prejudice? In her book, Pride and Prejudice, Jane
Austen demonstrates the different kinds of these chracteristics through each character. Lizzy, Jane, and
Darcy are all completely different characters who show their pride and prejudice in completely
different ways. Since the very beginning of the book, Elizabeth Bennet, who is also known as Lizzy,
was very quick to judge, and her prejudice led her to believe in the wrong people. When Lizzy met
Mr. Wickham she instantly believed his story about Darcy; perhaps it was because she already disliked
him. He told her that he had grown up with Mr. Darcy and that he was quite prideful. Wickham
continued to say that Darcy had wronged him in a tremendous way and of course Lizzy ... Show more

Darcy was very misunderstood as his first impression at the dance in Netherfield was not very good.
Elizabeth and all the other people in the town saw him as prideful; however, Darcy shows later on in
the book that he is just not very good with people. He explained to Elizabeth that the story Wickham
told her was actually a lie. Darcy began with the true story like this: he gave Wickham money to study
law but Wickham spent all of his money on other things. Coming back to Darcy, he asked for more
money and after refusing, Wickham deceived Darcy s sister into elopement. When Darcy found out,
he convinced Georgiana, his sister, not to follow through. After finding out this story and hearing
Darcy explain his past actions to her, Lizzy realized how wrong she was and that she let her prejudice
get in the way. After reading and understanding the whole story, the reader can tell which characters
let their pride or prejudice consume them. Elizabeth always judged people by their first impressions.
She began to love Wickham who turned out to be a fraud, and she hated Darcy all because he was shy
and misunderstood. Prejudice in Elizabeth s case is in fact bad. However Jane s prejudice was on a

Analysis Of Venus Cupid Folly And Time
Also known by the titles Venus, Cupid, Folly, and Time and A Triumph of Venus , this painting was on
purpose designed as a complex, erotic allegory that includes an extent of iconographic symbols from
the ancient world of mythology. It was a present from Cosimo de Medici to King Francis I of France.
Being rich and vivid in symbolism relating to the constituting ideas of the High Renaissance, the
painting gives Bronzino the opportunity to establish his maestro figure painting and portrait art.
Through personification of qualities and varying contrast and brightness, Bronzino is able to justify
that personal gains outweigh anything and everything that is moral. The picture symbolizes the
aftermath of incestuous actions. Venus is evidently present at the center of the painting, recognizable
by the golden apple in her left hand from the Greek myth The Judgement of Paris. A robust adolescent
male figure with wings can be seen entwined with her. It is her son, Cupid. The undeniable sexuality
of their embrace has long been debated over as scandalous behavior. Rather than channeling the act of
incest in itself, Bronzino exploits these two as symbols for the personification of male and female
sexuality. Whichever case it may be, the erotic narrative of the painting becomes instantly clear.
Venus, determined to get Cupid s arrow submits to dire endeavors when Cupid refuses and tries to
distract him by seducing him while she takes the arrow from him. Venus and Cupid are painted

Definition Essay On Self Respect
Respect can be defined as an action or a feeling that is shown to others, oneself or something. Some
may that you can get a feeling out of any virtue, for example anger or disrespect, but respect is usually
connected between two individuals; an action of showing how much love, pride and honor you have
for them and having your words and actions speak for you indicating that respect is being shown.
There is a chain reaction when it comes to expressing respect, you must give respect to gain respect
and it can go the other way around also, where in order to receive respect you must give respect.
When it comes to the virtue respect it is a give and take type of situation. As Fyodor Dostoyevsky,
Russian novelist and short story writer, once said, If you want to be respected by others, the great
thing is to respect yourself. Only by self respect you will compel others to respect you. Having self
respect has a lot to do with one s self esteem, knowing their own worth and confidence plays an
important role. Having an open mind to being wrong is a gateway to self respect, it shows
acknowledgment and acceptance of the truth or existence of a fact or opinion. It shows that a person
knows their rights from wrongs and having self respect opens new doors of opportunities, this means
that a person is willing to understand their mistakes and learn from them; learn from those mistakes,
wrongs and anything that can be found to not being worthy of putting it out there in the world and

What Are The Similarities Between Achilles And Beowulf
Humans are imperfect, created half to rise, and half to fall ...The glory, jest, and riddle of the world!
(15 18). Both Homer s Iliad, which illustrates the story of the renowned warrior Achilles, and the
Saxon Beowulf, which highlights the adventures of the heroic monster killer Beowulf, convey the idea
that humans are in the middle state (line 3), as Alexander Pope once said. Both works offer insights
that still apply to today s society, where human capability and ambition combined with weakness and
emotion can lead to disaster.
The main characters of both stories, Achilles and Beowulf, are larger than life and never satisfied with
mundanity, seeking to boast their superhuman prowess and cement their glory, but in the end are
proven to be mortal. Achilles, a demi god, is impervious to weapons everywhere but his heel, and uses

Even in modern times, there are still some who seek for their own selfish glory and ambitions and
cause massive repercussions to others. The attitudes of the leaders of some politically extreme nations
such as IS, North Korea, and Israel, reflect those of Achilles and Beowulf. The leader of IS in
particular the caliph, Abu Bakr al Baghdadi pursues extreme Islamic ideology, enacting a genocide
and a war in order to win glory in the annals of Islamic history.
Although now we live in technologically advanced world, human nature has remained the same. Our
basic motivations remain the same. Just as in Beowulf and the Iliad, in our modern times corruption,
avarice, and envy are abound, as much as courage, bravery, and honor. Thus remains the vital question
whether humans should choose to be like Achilles and Beowulf; brave, bold, and ambitious, yet

Prometheus And Frankenstein
The story of Frankenstein and his monster by Mary Shelley set the foundation for one of the most
recognizable monsters in the modern world. Aside from producing millions as a horror theme, the
story brings to light different aspects of how humans interact with the unknown. It draws a criticism
upon the human species as a whole of who really is the true monster . Shelley uses multiple sources,
mythological and biblical, to illustrate how Frankenstein becomes the modern Prometheus but at the
same time, is vastly different from him. The plot of the novel focuses on Victor Frankenstein and his
relationship, or lack thereof, with his son, or creation as he is referred to. Frankenstein is the primary

It is important to note that while those who have god complexes are inflated with feelings of personal
ability, privilege, or infallibility (Wikipedia), it is not always the case for each person. In his quest to
understand death, he created life from death. Thus, surpassing any trivial god complex but instead
becoming a god himself. I rushed out of the room... (Shelley 5.2). In fleeing from his creation, the
reader would come to understand how profound of a complex Frankenstein has nurtured. Frankenstein
s god complex is seen to be inspired by feelings of overblown ability and infallibly. The link between
his god complex and his ability stem from his years of research and work he put into the creature. His
ability to study life and death, dug up corpses and then put them all together is a testament to his
ability. Infallibility comes into the mix during the time in which he is disturbing corpses and removing
parts of the decaying bodies (John Wilson Crocker). It also comes back up when he actually believes it
is totally ok to just re animate an impromptu thrown together corpse. In finding himself wishing for
the creature to see him as Adam saw God, the reader solidifies the god complex in Frankenstein. ...a

Explain The Three Categories Of Hormones
The three categories of hormones are amino acid derivatives, peptide hormones, and lipid derivatives.
The amino acid derivatives come from the amino acids tyrosine and tryptophan. Peptide hormones are
broken down into two groups. One of them has glycoproteins, while the second has short polypeptides
and small proteins. Lipid derivatives are also made up of two groups that are referred to as eicosanoids
and steroid hormones. The hormones are typically released into the blood stream and leave the blood
stream by either diffusing out to bind with receptors, broken down by the kidneys or liver, or broken
down by enzymes that can be found in the blood or interstitial fluids. These tropic hormones are the

How Music Defines You Essay
I think music in itself is healing. It s an explosive expression of humanity. It s something we are all
touched by. No matter what culture we re from, everyone loves music. This famous quote said by
Billy Joel does a good job describing the way music can affect people. Different songs can impact
people, change their moods, or bring back memories related to a certain tune. Each person, however,
has their own unique taste in music; one song can be loved by one but hated by another, it all depends
on our personal taste and what we can relate to. This made me wonder, what does the music I listen to
say about myself? Do the lyrics define who I am as a person, or do I simply like songs because of the
beat? As I looked at my top ten playlist, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The second song I analyzed was Paradise by Coldplay. Similarly to Kids , the song Paradise starts
with the idea of childhood. When she was just a girl she expected the world. But it flew away from her
reach so she ran away in her sleep and dreamed of paradise is the opening verse for this tune. It talks
of a young girl with big dreams expecting the world. As the girl in the song grows up she finds that
life is not as simple as she believed. Life goes on, it gets so heavy. The wheel breaks the butterfly.
Every tear a waterfall. In the night the stormy night she ll close her eyes. Those lyrics are a good
example of how life has some downs, tears, and storms, but it talks of how the girl stays positive when
the song says, She d say, I know the sun must set to rise. I think this song is a good reflection of me. I
have big dreams for myself, but as life goes on I go through some bumps in the road. I have
encountered many of my own stormy nights, but I know the sun will rise to a clearer and brighter day
in time. I have learned not to expect things to be handed to me, but to chase after my dreams, and my
own perfect paradise to a path of success. My final and favorite song I looked at was the song Pursuit
of Happiness by Kid Cudi. Kid Cudi is my favorite artist, so it makes sense that my favorite song is
one of his most popular. However, when I tell people my favorite artist is Kid Cudi, they give me
weird looks because most of his songs do not

environment and the uncontrolled development of infrastructures and recreation facilities (hotels,
parking, golf courses, etc), resulting in the fall of many resorts. The main pressures have been from
land use changes rather than pollution or species exploitation. (Woodrow et al 1996). The quality of
the Dorset heathlands has been affected by urbanization (land being relatively cheaper for urban
development), poor management practices, and afforestation. In the 19th century, Bournemouth was a
fishing settlement, with 695 inhabitants, however, it has grown significantly and in 1995, it had
160.000 inhabitants. Recently, there has been a great pressure from housing, transports infrastructures
such as roads and tourism related construction. There needs to be a greater emphasis on making a
more efficient use of land within the urban areas (Bournemouth Housing Strategy 2003 2006,
Published in 2002). Also, there is great concentration of people in the urban area of the resort,
resulting in negative impacts on public services such as health, education. One of the causes of
housing problems is the large use of land by the tourism

Peter Gabriel s Sledgerunner
As long as visual media has existed there have been individuals attempting to test the boundaries of
their particular medium. Peter Gabriel s Sledgehammer , whose music video was directed by Stephen
Johnson, was able to bridge the gap between experimental filmmaking and mainstream success as it
went on to win numerous accolades for its innovative music video. The video utilized many
techniques not typically used in visual media, especially music videos, and was one of the first music
videos to bring unconventional filmmaking techniques to the general public. Upon watching
Sledgehammer for the first time it is quite clear that the video was not afraid to shy away from
mainstream techniques and try something different. One of the techniques

Gil Scott Heron s The Godfather Of Rap
In a time of both social and political tension in the United States, Gil Scott Heron left a massive
impression as a musician and poet. Later earning the nickname, The Godfather of Rap, Heron played a

Anger Definition
Anger
Anger is a natural emotion. Mild forms of anger include displeasure, irritation or dislike. Anger can
come as a reaction to criticism, threat, or frustration. This is usually a healthy response. Anger may be
a secondary response to feeling sad, lonely or frightened. Anger is similar to other emotions in that it
manifests itself by physiological and biological changes. When someone gets angry they can have an
increase in blood pressure, heart rate, as well as energy levels, and adrenaline. Anger is different than
other emotions in a lot of ways. It is motivating. Anger s purpose is to push you to protect yourself.
Anger gives you energy. It drives you to engage, not withdraw, as most other emotions do. Anger

You feel hurt, overlooked, targeted or mistreated. Anger isn t just an emotion, it s a constellation of
emotions.
There are always layers of feelings underneath it, feeding it. Anger seeks a target. This is what makes
anger so easy to misdirect. It may erupt at the wrong person. Anger can be turned inward or outward.
Sometimes directing our anger at its true target can be acutely uncomfortable. This is when we are at
risk for turning our anger inward.
There are a lot of triggers to anger. Some of the common ones are grief and sadness, rudeness,
tiredness, and hunger. Grief and sadness can be caused by the loss of family, friends or other loved
ones. Rudeness can be from poor interpersonal skills and/or poor service. People may have shorter
tempers and be more irritable when tired. And everyone gets hangry , angry when they are hungry.
Nearly everyone experiences anger. Stress is an experience that has been shown to underlie angry
feelings. People who have been through a tragedy seem to be angry more often. Women tend to get
angry easier, but get over it faster. Men are more likely to have hostile emotions. Younger people have
higher levels of anger than older people.

The Cruelty Of Solitary Confinement Essay
It was in a brainstorming situation that I discovered the topic of discussion I wanted to hear a
convincing opposition against. I knew that choosing something more controversial would garner a
greater opposition, but at the same time, I wanted to avoid topics that seemed almost too
commonplace in assignments like this. With that in mind, I decided to hear out the opposition against
my view of the inhumanity of solitary confinement. The person with whom I discussed, who will be
referred to as Person X for the purposes of this write up, believed that in certain situations, solitary
confinement was a just punishment. We had this discussion waiting for our Microbiology class to
begin. Bringing up random topics of discussion is not something unusual within the scope of my
character, and so rather than wait for an opportunity that would not present itself, I simply asked
Person X for his/her opinion on solitary confinement as a justified punishment for convicted criminals.
To give the discussion some direction and so that I could better understand Person X s point of view I
asked some questions. The two most important I found being: Why do you feel that it s okay to punish
people like that in some cases but not in others? and How long is too long? . I found these questions
particularly helpful in understanding Person X s position because I noticed that he/she didn t
completely agree with either one side. He/she was intent on making a point based on conditionality.

Theory And Sociological Research
A theory is an explanation for a problem or an observation. These explanations can vary based on
which perspective is being used, such as a moral or sociological. Despite having different theories for
the same problem, they all try to ...explicitly or implicitly suggest how to address [a] problem, which
could then lead to appropriate action (p.52). In our everyday lives, we use theories to come up with
explanations for our daily experiences. This can range from why the bus was late or why there is an
argument on the street. With theories, we can address issues that we come across in life and attempt to
solve them. For example, a theory for why one s bus was late can be formed by recalling an
observation of construction noises heard nearby.

Characterism And Gerasim In The Death Of Ivan Ilych
According to Webster dictionary destiny means, a predetermined course of events often held to be an
irresistible power or agency, such a simple definition for a word that holds so much weight (Webster).
Anyone who thinks of the word destiny feels some form of intimidation because knowing that we are
destined to do something great or small can be overwhelming. In most frictional writing the characters
have a predetermined destiny they need to fulfill from Katniss Everdeen stopping the Hunger Games
to Odysseus going back home and reclaim his thrown. The Death of Ivan Ilych is no exception and
Gerasim, himself had a destiny he couldn t avoid.

was something Ivan wanted, Gerasim s attitude towards him there was something akin to what he
wished for, so the attitude comforted him, (Tolstoy p.168). Through acknowledging Ivan s failing
health Gerism gave Ivan something he thought he never truly had which was a real human

question remains not about Ivan, but about Gerism and did he fight his destiny or was he accepting of

We shall all of us die so why should I grudge a little trouble? is the reply Gerism gave when Ivan
questioned why Gerism was helping him. Toylse goes deeper into this question, expressing that
Gerism didn t think helping Ivan was a burden because one day Gerism hoped someone would do the

Risks And Challenges Of Indian Construction Industry
RISKS AND CHALLENGES IN INDIAN CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY
Risk in Construction needless to mention, with huge money, comes the company of big risks. In the
area of Indian construction, the risks are abundant, due to the involvement of legal, political, financial
and cultural complexities. As far as construction in India is concerned, there is lack of experience, but
the opportunities for growth for companies willing to enter the arena are immense. The domestic
construction industry is growing at a rapid pace, due to high demand for housing and increase in
expenditure on infrastructure. All of the most challenging projects across country involve a variety of
complex processes working simultaneously. Every critical activity is associated with a risk and can
negatively affect the project objectives, such as time and schedule, cost and quality of work. The
number of risks arising from a task is directly proportional to the number of people working on it.
Mismanagement is one of the various sources of risk. These days, most of the big projects are sublet
to sub contractors, and therefore risk assessment and mitigation has become more and more
challenging. (McKinsey Company, 2009) (Sharmila Pimplikar, n.d.)
As a developing country, India has not focused on risk management. Construction projects in India
face various types of risks such as business risks, financial risks, technology risk, project risk and

time people that struggle with bulimia may have times where they battle with anorexia nervosa,
meaning they restrict themselves from eating. There have been so many cases where people battle
with bulimia for years upon years, despite the large variety of treatment there is. There are many
perspectives that people express on how eating disorders begin. Many people associate eating
disorders with wanting to be thin, peer pressure, and pressure from parents. Treatment and medical
attention are very important if you want to overcome bulimia. Because this disorder can lead to
permanent damage to the body or even death, it is imperative that you get the necessary treatment. .
Overview
According to the American Psychiatric Association (2013) bulimia nervosa is when a person has
repeatedly binged when eating. During the binge phase, the person will have very little control over
their actions and consume large amounts of food in a short period of time. Typically a person battling

Antigen And T-Cells
2. A crazy immunology professor, in his wild immunological dreams has suggested that an antigen
arriving in a lymphoid tissue is like a bunch of children searching for their parents in a crowd at a
football stadium. Immunologically speaking, what does this analogy refer to and what is the
consequence of this encounter? Use a concrete and personal example to answer this question. Newly
generated lymphocytes, including T cells and B cells, will leave their central lymphoid organs where
they developed, and will migrate to the peripheral lymphoid tissues, where some further maturation
will occur. Mature lymphocytes continually recirculate between the blood and peripheral lymphoid
tissues. Thus, high concentrations of lymphocytes can be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This specificity can relate to a child trying to find its parent in a crowd. The antigen recognition
molecules of T cells are made as membrane bound proteins and function to signal T cells for
activation. These molecules are called T cell receptors. T cell receptors are similar to antibodies in
structure, but they do not recognize and bind to the antigen directly. T cell receptors will recognize
short peptide fragments of pathogen protein antigens, that are bound to MHC molecules on the
surfaces of other cells. Major histocompatibility complex, or MHC will present fragments derived
from antigens and display them on the surface of antigen presenting cells to be recognized by the T
cell receptor. The TCR will recognize not only the peptide fragments of the antigen, but will also
recognize the MHC molecules which the fragment is bound to, adding another dimension of
specificity, relating to the analogy of a child trying to find its parent in a crowd. The consequence of
these interactions is an adaptive immune response of antigen specific lymphocytes to the antigen, as
well as the development of immunological memory. Adaptive immune responses are generated by
clonal selection of lymphocytes, and are distinct from innate responses. The immune response
consequence is in result to the antigen 3. Consider this scenario, even if you do not agree with it.

Budgeting Within the Business Organization
The budgeting process and the end product, the budget, comprise two essential elements of
multinational management: planning and control. Planning is the primary function of the budgeting
process and the result, the budget, provides the basis for subsequent monitoring and control of
activities. For a multinational firm, with geographically dispersed subsidiaries to coordinate and
control, an ineffective planning and control system can be disastrous.
For the typical multinational firm, the budgeting process is the primary period of planning at both
corporate and subsidiary levels. During the planning phase, the subsidiaries establish short term goals

This stage s effectiveness I believe is equal to the planning stage. The company has to be realistic in
examining the separate departmental budgets to look for discrepancies within the budget. If a
company does not successfully identify all problem areas then the company may have less capital than
aware of. On the other side of that coin if the company does not evaluate the different units correctly
and has overlooked capital, there could be more capital that can be utilized for new programs and
units.
#61656; Evaluation – is the stage when the company monitors and assesses the budges performance.
The budget committee should be taking a look at variances and impacts internal and external to see
effects on the budget. This is the stage for reflection.
(FMBP, UN, 2002)
I believe that this stage can be effective but usually is not. This occurs generally when upper
management examines the prior budget for how well the company did as a whole. In my experience
this is when upper management overly criticizes departments for coming in over budget making the
unit leaders fix the issue next time to prevent getting chewed out (Mayberry, 2006). This phase can
contradict the control phase by pressuring unit managers to doctor their budgets to stay out of trouble
or gain a certain bonus. Overall I deam hindsight is always 20/20, and when looking back at what was

Lillian Faderman s Influence On Women Essay
Lillian Faderman was born in New York in 1940 as a second generation Latvian Jewish immigrant.
While she held a great responsibility in raising herself, her caretakers were primarily her mother and
her aunt, who both arrived in the United States in the early 1900s. Her mother and her aunt both
struggled financially as single women who provided for themselves. As a child Faderman began to
recognize her attraction towards women, which led to an internal struggle she dealt with well into her
adolescence. In addition to coming from a working class background and struggling with her
sexuality, Faderman also experienced life as a second class citizen as a woman in a male dominated
world. Faderman s experiences provide a lens through which to identify some of the social
expectations she fought to overcome as a lesbian and a working class female.
At a young age Faderman relocated to the west coast with her mother and her aunt. As a small child
living with her two guardians in East Los Angeles, Faderman was able to witness the struggle
presented by lack of money and being among the working class. Faderman primarily grew up in small,
furnished rooms, and for a portion of her childhood shared a room and a bed with her mother. Both her
mother and her aunt worked long hours in a garment factory, to which it took three buses to arrive
each day (26). She was able to witness how the hard work and the long hours weighed on not only her
mother s looks, but also her mental wellbeing. She

William James s Decision Based On Intellectual Grounds
In his lecture, The Will to Believe, William James addresses how one adopts a belief. There is a
hypothesis and an option, where you choose between two live hypotheses. An option has the
characteristics to be live or dead, forced or avoidable, and momentous or trivial. In his thesis, James
argues how our passional nature must make our decisions about our beliefs when they cannot be
certainly determined on intellectual grounds, however, this is not the case, we can always make the
decision based on intellectual grounds. One can use Bayesian probability to gain some grasp of the
situation and eventually to make a decision. In section I of James lecture, he defines hypothesis,
giving examples of live and dead hypotheses. A hypothesis is ...anything that may be proposed to our
belief. (James, sec. 1) It is anything proposed to be believed, a claim. A hypothesis may be living or
dead, depending on the recipient. James explains the difference between live or dead with an example
of believing in Mahdi. To a person that does not know about the subject at hand, it would be a dead
hypothesis. However, if this claim was presented to someone who knew the subject matter, it would
alive as ... the hypothesis is among the mind s possibilities. (James, sec. 1) A live hypothesis is a claim
that appears to be a real possibility for the one it is proposed to. A dead hypothesis is a claim that does
not appear to be a real possibility for the one it is proposed to. Whether a

The First Programmable Computer Ever Created
The first programmable computer ever created, ENIAC made in 1946 sparked a promising
advancement in technology. Each passing generation brought a new groundbreaking advancement in
computer technology. And with each advancement, the previous generation quickly became obsolete.
A computer made in 1985 would almost certainly be inferior to a computer made the next year. But a
computer made in 2010 can still be widely used and integrated into 2016 computing. This leads me to
believe that improvements in computers are slowing down and furthermore, that computer technology
is plateauing.
Arguably the most important creation would be the integrated circuit which allowed cpus and the
circuit board to pack more power into a smaller design. But after this technology was created, there
was a noticeable lack of any more groundbreaking advancements. Each technology generation alters
circuit physics and requires new computer aided design software. (Markov). Markov makes a good
point here. He says that for every stone we pass in technology, circuit physics advances or changes
and we must account for it. When this happens, we must also change the means in which we
manufacture, typically with computer design software. Take for example when the integrated circuit
was created, we could not use obsolete technology in our chips and electronics, Small scale integration
(SSI) of the integrated circuit began in 1964, seeing their first use in early aerospace projects. The next

The World s Image Of God
So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he
created them. God blessed them, and God said to them, Be fruitful and multiply...
Together men and women were meant to bring life, and subdue the earth, ordering their environment.
From the beginning God asked mankind to make a good home from what he provided and mandated
that man and woman do so together. Man was meant to be a keeper, while the woman was to be a
helper. When the woman enriches life on earth with the help she offers man, and man works to subdue
earth in order to provide a living space supportive of the life of woman and child, earth becomes a
home. Rather than a wild, untamed environment, creation becomes a place centered around human
beings, with man and woman at its apex. Without the woman, the environment becomes wild and
untamed, without her it s just man and the animals.
Then the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper as his
partner.
In a very raw sense the woman does foster the preservation of life, but she was meant for more.
She was meant to bring a fruitful and enriching aspect to life. Preservation suggests that there is a
negative force encroaching on life, it s being lived to the fullest. However, God gave man women in a
time of peace before the first death had occurred. In an optimum environment where life is fostered,
woman is enabled to not only foster its preservation, but the enrichment of

Reflection On Interpersonal Communication
Reflection Paper I have taken Interpersonal Communication before during the summer 2016, but I

fun. Her lectures and her stories made it interesting. Every Mondays and Wednesdays, I had three
classes. Interpersonal Communication would be my first class to start my day. Then two classes after
that. I ended up dropping those two classes. I was supposed to drop this class too but I didn t because I
wanted to learn more. I ve been in a relationship with my girlfriend for almost a year and one of the
problems we had was listening. Sometimes she wouldn t listen to me or I just wouldn t listen to her at
all. The day we had a lecture about listening in class, that same morning, we got in an argument about
how I don t listen to her. I always listen to her but not when we argue. I usually avoid her when we are
about to start arguing. I found it funny how the professor somehow knew I was in trouble with
listening and she decided to have a lecture on listening. Unlike a history class or a math class or even
reading class, this class actually helped me outside of school. I also learned that my professor is a
volunteer basically everywhere. She participates in marches whenever she can. Her age doesn t stop
her from making the community better and standing up for what she believes in. She is an inspiration.
She asked the class to volunteer somewhere for three hours which was pretty cool. I haven t had any

accused of absconding because a probation officer went to a wrong door. While being in detention his
mother passed away and he was not granted a furlough. The injustice I witnessed only furthered my
resolve to become an attorney. Sadly, my friend passed away recently but his actions inspired me to
advance more quickly to my goal. After researching multiple law schools, the faculty, resources,
clinics, and externships at Barry University School of Law fit best my educational needs. My plan
after law school is to focus on public interest and become an advocate for those whose voices are not
heard. I know that my determination and passion for the law will be an indispensable value to

Identity Crisis In My Ghana
Reputation is everything to most families in Ghana. My grandparents have always defended their
reputation for decades. This has created a culture whereby the opinions of others about the family
matters more than the actual reality. Living under such circumstances raises expectations and forces an
individual to live by the dictates of society. It creates an identity crisis because you become who
society expects you to be rather than finding your true self.
In the early sixties, during the exodus of professionals from Ghana to Nigeria, my grandparents left
Ghana with my mum to Nigeria. My mum got pregnant with me at age fifteen in Nigeria and to
protect the family image she was sent back to Ghana by my grandparents to live in Ghana with a
family friend. My dad was never informed and to this day he has no idea I exist. My Grandparents
moved back to Ghana about three years after this incident.
Growing up as a kid, I was under the impression that my grandparents were my parents. At the age 8
when I found out the truth, I felt insecure in who I was and where I belonged. From then through by
teenage years, I lived in fear; the fear of not doing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
My confidence was further boosted as I received an award of excellence during graduation. This new
sense of confidence was well cemented in college when I had the opportunity to be one of four
individuals from a highly selective process to study for one year in Norway as part of the Norwegian
Quota Scheme Scholarship. This was my first time living outside Ghana, and the experience was life
changing. The class with students from all over the world and the encouraging faculty exposed me to
an entirely new culture and work ethic. A new world view was discovered, this gave me the
opportunity to view life through my own lenses without the constant pressures and limitations from
family and

The Soldier In Tim OBrien s The Things They Carried
One of the main characters in the short story The Things They Carried , written by Tim O Brien, is a
twenty four year old Lieutenant named Jimmy Cross. Jimmy is the assigned leader of his infantry unit
in the Vietnam War, but does not assume his role accordingly. Instead, he s constantly daydreaming,
along with obsessing, over his letters and gifts from Martha. Martha is a student at Mount Sebastian
College in New Jersey, Jimmy s home state. He believes that he is in love with Martha, although she
shows no signs of loving him. This obsession is a fantasy that he uses to escape from reality, as well
as, take his mind off of the war that surrounds him, in Vietnam. The rest of the men in his squad have
items that they carry too, as a way of connecting to their homes. The story depicts the soldiers by the
baggage that they carry, both mentally and physically. After the death of one of his troops, Ted
Lavender, Jimmy finally realizes that his actions have been detrimental to the squad as a whole. He
believes that if he would have been a better leader, that Ted Lavender would have never been shot and
killed. The physical and emotional baggage that Jimmy totes around with him, in Vietnam, is holding
him back from fulfilling his responsibilities as the First Lieutenant of his platoon. Jimmy has apparent
character traits that hold him back from being the leader that he needs to be, such as inexperience and
his lack of focus; but develops the most important character trait in the

Environmental Effects Of Acid Rain
Acid rain, simply put, is a mixture of rainwater and a few specific chemicals that are emitted both
naturally and non naturally. The process occurs in the lowest layer of the atmosphere, the troposphere.
When compounds such as sulfuric dioxide(SO2) and nitrogen oxides(NO, NO2), are transported to
this layer and react with the other parts of the troposphere(water, oxygen, carbon dioxide). Acid rain
was first discovered in Sweden in 1872, but has been seen as a more prevalent problem in modern
times. Although research had been conducted for many years on acid rain, it did not become an issue
for society until around the 1980 s. Acid rain s effects were vast, harming natural environments,
architecture, and even the public s health. Regulation of chemical emissions have lessened the threat
of acid rain, yet it remains a problem to this day. A
As previously mentioned, acid rain is caused by the mixture of chemical emissions with the elements
of the troposphere. It s very important to note that water has a natural acidity, it s the excess of oxides
that cause the problem. But how did those emissions and oxides make it there? Naturally, compounds
like carbon dioxide(CO2), nitric oxide(NO), and sulfur dioxide(SO2), are released through just a few
processes: decomposition of organic matter, electric discharge(reactions with lightning and the ozone),
as well as release of gasses in volcanic eruptions. However, these only contribute to the natural acidity
of water. Human

Russia Living Conditions
In Russia, there were some prosperous peasant farmers called kulaks, but the living and working
conditions for most peasants were dreadful. The Famine and starvation were common and in some
regions. Much of Russia land was unsuitable for farming. As a result, the land was short in supply
because, by the early 1900s, the population was growing rapidly. The peasants living conditions
contrasted sharply with those of the aristocracy, who had vast estates, town and country houses and
luxurious lifestyles. The biggest problems that Russia faced is that the Tsar did not do delegate day to
day task and he also managed his officials poorly.
The opposition parties, added to the appalling conditions in the towns and the countryside, led to a

Persuasive Effect On Plastic Surgery
Everyone at one point thinks about going under the knife, there was an 80% increase in the number of
girls 18 and younger receiving genital plastic surgery, according to the American Society for Aesthetic
Plastic Surgery (Simmons, 2016,para.3). Male and female teens, form ranges thirteen to nineteen years
of age, have thought or actually had done a plastic surgery on their bodies. Even though this procedure
is overpriced and the recovery time takes long, at the end many patients believe that the outcome is
worth it since they perceive themselves more beautiful. Plastic surgery has been getting popular
among teens because is helping them raise their self esteem, lowering their depression rate, and
enhancing their beauty.
Many girls have low self esteem during their teen years when they start to grow into their imperfect
bodies . Most girls start comparing and contrasting their bodies with other girls, so they start
developing the thoughts of cosmetic procedures to maintain a high self esteem. Sweeney (2009)
argues that teens are seeking plastic surgery to look normal and feel like a woman . Even though most
teen girls are not fully developed, they are eager to do some cosmetic procedures on themselves.
Kristen of River Edge, N.J. said that she has been wanting breast implants since she started puberty.
She felt uneven and unattractive because she grew curves but her breast did not grow along. Once she
had the procedure done she felt like a woman and her self esteem

Origin of the 1905 Russian Revolution Essay
Origin of the 1905 Russian Revolution
Russia existed in turmoil at the close of the 19th century. This tumultuous atmosphere spilled over into
the new century. This time period is a portrait of a country in a state of constant change. However, this
change was far more problematic to Russia that similar progress of western European nations. An
examination of the revolutionary period of 1905 presents the inevitability of such a revolution. Russia
s rapid industrialization and modernization had inherent problems. Typically, countries, which
undergo rapid periods of industrialization, subvert the well being of the common individual in favour
of the progress of the nation. This was the case in a rapidly industrializing Russian ... Show more

The former is the Russia of our intellectuals and of the people; the other is an anachronism, deeply
rooted in the past, and defended in the present by an omnipresent bureaucracy. The one spells liberty;
the other, despotism.
Throughout the history of Russia, its people have had the increasingly prevalent problem of
representation. The peasant commune was essentially the only bastion of representative government in
Russia. However, the peasant commune had little influence in any political forum above that of the
village or farming community. The divining difficulty of Russia in this period was the power of Tsar
Nicholas II. His ideals were rooted in the distant past of autocrats and despots. Though he wished his
nation to modernize in its production and industrialization processes, he refused to accept political
change. He continued to impose his will on a vast empire of some 129 million people through a small
imperial bureaucracy, which served at the sovereign s pleasure. These ancient political views were
circumspect in a nation attempting to modernize and improve its status within the world community.
Russian history has been characterized as an enduring line of revolution and reaction. In efforts to
maintain the power of the autocracy,

  • 2. Departure Most people when they reach adulthood want to move away from home and to start a new life. In the book Departure by Sherwood Anderson, George Willard, is a young man that grew up in Winesburg, Ohio with his family. George is a boy who is growing into manhood and wants to branch out into the world on his own. George s hometown represents his childhood and him deciding to leave shows that he wants to become independent. He is also supported in his decision to go to the city from his family and the people in Winesburg. These details of Winesburg are familiar with George but he seeks out to be his own person by leaving. To start, there are many reasons why George chose to leave Winesburg and can be seen in the way he describes the town. Firstly, it is stated in paragraph 13, He stayed that way for a long time and when he aroused himself and again looked out of the car window, the town of Winesburg had disappeared and his life there had become but a background on which to paint ... Also, Tom Willard said to George, Keep your eyes on your money. Be awake. That s the ticket. Don t let anyone think you re a greenhorn. By saying this Tom shows his support and acceptance of George growing up and leaving. Finally, in paragraph five it states, In the fall and spring he spends his Sundays fishing in Lake Erie. He has a round red face and small blue eyes. He knows the people in the towns along his railroad better than a city man knows the people who live in his apartment building. Tom is an element of Winesburg that George illustrates in a certain way that shows that George wants to be more than what he is now and go to different places like ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Released in 1959, this song remained an important civil justice song not only within the movement, but also across the globe. As mentioned earlier, the act of singing together is a powerful tool to unite individuals and to create a sense of community. This song evoked vitality and strong emotions across the south were most of the blacks lived as well as rejuvenating courage, and confidence in the search for freedom in their struggles. The song has an AABA structure like a blues song with simple straightforward lyrics which makes it easy for large groups to sing (Graham, 2015). The constant changes that were made to the song as it evolved gives us some insight as to what the people wanted and needed from the song. Originally the song lyrics were written as I will overcome , as it was meant be sung as a hymn or in a religious context ( We Shall Overcome , 2014). However, in the context of the social movement, the needs of the group changed and so the lyrics reflected that change. The change from I to we demonstrates a sense of community and belonging, as well as a group identity. From simply changing the words will to shall it is evident that the group is trying to convey a message. Through an analysis of the words will expresses an intention, whereas Shall carries extra weight and force and is associated with the language of law, regulations, and directives and to express that which is mandatory or inevitable ( We Shall Overcome , ... • 4. Essay on Huck Finn Huckleberry Finn The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is one of the greatest, most daring novels in the world. Mark Twain s style helps to realistically portray early America. Mark Twain tells the story through the voice of Huck, the very kindhearted main character. Everything that Huck says reflects the racism and black stereotypes typical of the era. This has lead to many conflicts from readers since the novel was first printed. However, the story has inspired some. James W. Tuttleton says in an article he wrote that Huck Finn is regularly denounced as racist trash (The San Francisco Chronicle [1885] 6) . Yet, again to oppose that is a quote by a reader, Anyone who is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If the author wished for the story to be racist, he would not write about the way Huck felt towards Jim. He [Twain] tried to evince the beauty of Huck and Jim s friendship by sealing it in flawed and humble English. ( Race Traitor [D Andrea 1992]). It is seen some throughout the book that Huck sees Jim as a white man. Huck tells the reader this when he realizes that Jim misses his own family and children, I do believe he cared just as much for his people as white folks does for their n (150). Any words that seem to humiliate African Americans is simply a casual use of Southern slang and not purposeful. Huck talks the way he was taught according to the culture then to stylize a specific behavior toward black slaves. However, his feelings toward Jim throughout the novel has taught Huck to conquer certain stereotypes, such as black stupidity and apathy. Huckleberry still 3 believes Jim to be inappropriate and stubborn at times, as in their exchange over the Biblical story of King Solomon and the French language. Huck doesn t tell Jim but says to the reader, If he got a notion in his head once, there warn t no getting it out again...I see it warn t no use wasting words you can t learn a nigger to argue (76 79). • 5. Madoff Bernie Madoff amp; the Worst Pyramid Scheme in U.S. History It is said that we are the product of our upbringing, so it probably would not surprise you to learn that the biggest and worst financial fraud committed through a pyramid scheme in US History, was achieved by a man who was raised by parents that also commit financial frauds. Bernie Madoff was raised watching his parents Ralph and Sylvia Madoff run a business that was not successful in the financial trading world. That company was named Gibraltar Securities. Due to the fact that Sylvia failed to accurately report their company s financial condition, the SEC closed the business in 1963 and started its investigative proceedings to determine if charges were needed to be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Cook, 2014) The question becomes, how did Bernie pull this off for so many years? Actually having a legitimate legal running successful company to further your reputation as a highly successful investor really helps, but how do you have billions of dollars invested in your company, that is ultimately already lost before you even cash the check given to you? That in itself must have taken a lot of time and energy, and when the scheme was discovered, Bernie stated that he alone ran his scheme. For someone that has no problem stealing money from his investors, it seems odd that his reason to take all the credit for the running of this scheme would be to protect the others that were involved. Is he really protecting them or is his ego so big that he wants all the credit? That is a question that we will never have the answer to unless Bernie himself answers it. But there is one person who has come forward. Frank DiPascali, the former financial chief, became the star witness against Bernie Madoff. Mr. Depascali was very forthcoming in giving information and he detailed how the scheme was able to be hidden for so long, and how it all comes down to technology. What? How does technology have anything to do with hiding a pyramid scheme? Well, Bernie had an emergency operations building that housed different versions of computers, software programs, printers, copiers, paper, company logos, and company ... The Pros And Cons Of A Hero Superman, Batman, Ironman, Hulk, Thor, etc. These superheroes were all heroes in the world with a superpower; however, in reality a hero is much more than having an amazing superpower. All people have the potential to become a hero, and the traits and actions that make up a hero are inside each and every one of us. Heroes are all around us in both the modern and past world. These heroes are created in many ways, but it doesn t take a risky moment, or it doesn t take saving the world to be a hero. A hero isn t always the strongest human being that risks their life, a hero is someone who makes a positive impact in someone else s life and overcomes challenges. To begin, Bob Riley said, Hard times don t create heroes. It is during the hard times when the hero within us is revealed. This quote proves how a hero faces hard times, and a hero defeats these obstacles that face him or her. In addition, there are many examples of heroes in the modern world. These unique heroes in the world are regular people like you and me. The only difference is, these unique heroes take an extra step and make a footprint in the world. To make this print, there were, and are many situations and natural disasters in the word that help bring out these heroes. For example, during the 9/11 attacks there were dozens of heroes. People from all different backgrounds became a hero saving others lives or having a positive impact in a random stranger s life. One hero during this troublesome time in ... In her book, Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen demonstrates the different kinds of these chracteristics through each character. Since the very beginning of the book, Elizabeth Bennet, who is also known as Lizzy, was very quick to judge, and her prejudice led her to believe in the wrong people. • 12. Analysis Of Venus Cupid Folly And Time Also known by the titles Venus, Cupid, Folly, and Time and A Triumph of Venus , this painting was on purpose designed as a complex, erotic allegory that includes an extent of iconographic symbols from the ancient world of mythology. It was a present from Cosimo de Medici to King Francis I of France. Being rich and vivid in symbolism relating to the constituting ideas of the High Renaissance, the painting gives Bronzino the opportunity to establish his maestro figure painting and portrait art. Through personification of qualities and varying contrast and brightness, Bronzino is able to justify that personal gains outweigh anything and everything that is moral. The picture symbolizes the aftermath of incestuous actions. Venus is evidently present at the center of the painting, recognizable by the golden apple in her left hand from the Greek myth The Judgement of Paris. A robust adolescent male figure with wings can be seen entwined with her. It is her son, Cupid. The undeniable sexuality of their embrace has long been debated over as scandalous behavior. Rather than channeling the act of incest in itself, Bronzino exploits these two as symbols for the personification of male and female sexuality. Whichever case it may be, the erotic narrative of the painting becomes instantly clear. Venus, determined to get Cupid s arrow submits to dire endeavors when Cupid refuses and tries to distract him by seducing him while she takes the arrow from him. Venus and Cupid are painted ... • 13. Definition Essay On Self Respect Respect can be defined as an action or a feeling that is shown to others, oneself or something. Some may that you can get a feeling out of any virtue, for example anger or disrespect, but respect is usually connected between two individuals; an action of showing how much love, pride and honor you have for them and having your words and actions speak for you indicating that respect is being shown. There is a chain reaction when it comes to expressing respect, you must give respect to gain respect and it can go the other way around also, where in order to receive respect you must give respect. When it comes to the virtue respect it is a give and take type of situation. As Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Russian novelist and short story writer, once said, If you want to be respected by others, the great thing is to respect yourself. Only by self respect you will compel others to respect you. Having self respect has a lot to do with one s self esteem, knowing their own worth and confidence plays an important role. Having an open mind to being wrong is a gateway to self respect, it shows acknowledgment and acceptance of the truth or existence of a fact or opinion. It shows that a person knows their rights from wrongs and having self respect opens new doors of opportunities, this means that a person is willing to understand their mistakes and learn from them; learn from those mistakes, wrongs and anything that can be found to not being worthy of putting it out there in the world and public ... Different songs can impact people, change their moods, or bring back memories related to a certain tune. Each person, however, has their own unique taste in music; one song can be loved by one but hated by another, it all depends on our personal taste and what we can relate to. However, if there is a lack of planning and partnerships, the impacts can also be negative. 4.1 Negative impacts for Bournemouth: Tourism growth when not planned cautiously can result in the degradation of the environment and the uncontrolled development of infrastructures and recreation facilities (hotels, parking, golf courses, etc), resulting in the fall of many resorts. The main pressures have been from land use changes rather than pollution or species exploitation. (Woodrow et al 1996). The quality of the Dorset heathlands has been affected by urbanization (land being relatively cheaper for urban development), poor management practices, and afforestation. In the 19th century, Bournemouth was a fishing settlement, with 695 inhabitants, however, it has grown significantly and in 1995, it had 160.000 inhabitants. Recently, there has been a great pressure from housing, transports infrastructures such as roads and tourism related construction. There needs to be a greater emphasis on making a more efficient use of land within the urban areas (Bournemouth Housing Strategy 2003 2006, Published in 2002). Also, there is great concentration of people in the urban area of the resort, resulting in negative impacts on public services such as health, education. • 25. The Cruelty Of Solitary Confinement Essay It was in a brainstorming situation that I discovered the topic of discussion I wanted to hear a convincing opposition against. I knew that choosing something more controversial would garner a greater opposition, but at the same time, I wanted to avoid topics that seemed almost too commonplace in assignments like this. With that in mind, I decided to hear out the opposition against my view of the inhumanity of solitary confinement. The person with whom I discussed, who will be referred to as Person X for the purposes of this write up, believed that in certain situations, solitary confinement was a just punishment. We had this discussion waiting for our Microbiology class to begin. Bringing up random topics of discussion is not something unusual within the scope of my character, and so rather than wait for an opportunity that would not present itself, I simply asked Person X for his/her opinion on solitary confinement as a justified punishment for convicted criminals. To give the discussion some direction and so that I could better understand Person X s point of view I asked some questions. The two most important I found being: Why do you feel that it s okay to punish people like that in some cases but not in others? and How long is too long? . I found these questions particularly helpful in understanding Person X s position because I noticed that he/she didn t completely agree with either one side. A crazy immunology professor, in his wild immunological dreams has suggested that an antigen arriving in a lymphoid tissue is like a bunch of children searching for their parents in a crowd at a football stadium. Immunologically speaking, what does this analogy refer to and what is the consequence of this encounter? Use a concrete and personal example to answer this question. Newly generated lymphocytes, including T cells and B cells, will leave their central lymphoid organs where they developed, and will migrate to the peripheral lymphoid tissues, where some further maturation will occur. Mature lymphocytes continually recirculate between the blood and peripheral lymphoid tissues. Thus, high concentrations of lymphocytes can be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This specificity can relate to a child trying to find its parent in a crowd. The antigen recognition molecules of T cells are made as membrane bound proteins and function to signal T cells for activation. These molecules are called T cell receptors. T cell receptors are similar to antibodies in structure, but they do not recognize and bind to the antigen directly. T cell receptors will recognize short peptide fragments of pathogen protein antigens, that are bound to MHC molecules on the surfaces of other cells. Major histocompatibility complex, or MHC will present fragments derived from antigens and display them on the surface of antigen presenting cells to be recognized by the T cell receptor. The TCR will recognize not only the peptide fragments of the antigen, but will also recognize the MHC molecules which the fragment is bound to, adding another dimension of specificity, relating to the analogy of a child trying to find its parent in a crowd. The consequence of these interactions is an adaptive immune response of antigen specific lymphocytes to the antigen, as well as the development of immunological memory. Adaptive immune responses are generated by clonal selection of lymphocytes, and are distinct from innate responses. The immune response consequence is in result to the antigen 3. Her mother and her aunt both struggled financially as single women who provided for themselves. As a child Faderman began to recognize her attraction towards women, which led to an internal struggle she dealt with well into her adolescence. In addition to coming from a working class background and struggling with her sexuality, Faderman also experienced life as a second class citizen as a woman in a male dominated world. In his thesis, James argues how our passional nature must make our decisions about our beliefs when they cannot be certainly determined on intellectual grounds, however, this is not the case, we can always make the decision based on intellectual grounds. Each passing generation brought a new groundbreaking advancement in computer technology. And with each advancement, the previous generation quickly became obsolete. A computer made in 1985 would almost certainly be inferior to a computer made the next year. But a computer made in 2010 can still be widely used and integrated into 2016 computing. This leads me to believe that improvements in computers are slowing down and furthermore, that computer technology is plateauing. Arguably the most important creation would be the integrated circuit which allowed cpus and the circuit board to pack more power into a smaller design. Each technology generation alters circuit physics and requires new computer aided design software. (Markov). Markov makes a good point here. When this happens, we must also change the means in which we manufacture, typically with computer design software. God blessed them, and God said to them, Be fruitful and multiply... Together men and women were meant to bring life, and subdue the earth, ordering their environment. From the beginning God asked mankind to make a good home from what he provided and mandated that man and woman do so together. Man was meant to be a keeper, while the woman was to be a helper. When the woman enriches life on earth with the help she offers man, and man works to subdue earth in order to provide a living space supportive of the life of woman and child, earth becomes a home. Rather than a wild, untamed environment, creation becomes a place centered around human beings, with man and woman at its apex. • 42. Identity Crisis In My Ghana Reputation is everything to most families in Ghana. My grandparents have always defended their reputation for decades. This has created a culture whereby the opinions of others about the family matters more than the actual reality. Living under such circumstances raises expectations and forces an individual to live by the dictates of society. It creates an identity crisis because you become who society expects you to be rather than finding your true self. In the early sixties, during the exodus of professionals from Ghana to Nigeria, my grandparents left Ghana with my mum to Nigeria. My mum got pregnant with me at age fifteen in Nigeria and to protect the family image she was sent back to Ghana by my grandparents to live in Ghana with a family friend. My dad was never informed and to this day he has no idea I exist. My Grandparents moved back to Ghana about three years after this incident. Growing up as a kid, I was under the impression that my grandparents were my parents. At the age 8 when I found out the truth, I felt insecure in who I was and where I belonged. From then through by teenage years, I lived in fear; the fear of not doing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The class with students from all over the world and the encouraging faculty exposed me to an entirely new culture and work ethic. A new world view was discovered, this gave me the opportunity to view life through my own lenses without the constant pressures and limitations from family and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Jimmy is the assigned leader of his infantry unit in the Vietnam War, but does not assume his role accordingly. Instead, he s constantly daydreaming, along with obsessing, over his letters and gifts from Martha. Martha is a student at Mount Sebastian College in New Jersey, Jimmy s home state. He believes that he is in love with Martha, although she shows no signs of loving him. This obsession is a fantasy that he uses to escape from reality, as well as, take his mind off of the war that surrounds him, in Vietnam. The rest of the men in his squad have items that they carry too, as a way of connecting to their homes. The story depicts the soldiers by the baggage that they carry, both mentally and physically. After the death of one of his troops, Ted Lavender, Jimmy finally realizes that his actions have been detrimental to the squad as a whole. The physical and emotional baggage that Jimmy totes around with him, in Vietnam, is holding him back from fulfilling his responsibilities as the First Lieutenant of his platoon. • 44. Environmental Effects Of Acid Rain Acid rain, simply put, is a mixture of rainwater and a few specific chemicals that are emitted both naturally and non naturally. The process occurs in the lowest layer of the atmosphere, the troposphere. When compounds such as sulfuric dioxide(SO2) and nitrogen oxides(NO, NO2), are transported to this layer and react with the other parts of the troposphere(water, oxygen, carbon dioxide). Acid rain was first discovered in Sweden in 1872, but has been seen as a more prevalent problem in modern times. Although research had been conducted for many years on acid rain, it did not become an issue for society until around the 1980 s. Acid rain s effects were vast, harming natural environments, architecture, and even the public s health. Regulation of chemical emissions have lessened the threat of acid rain, yet it remains a problem to this day. A As previously mentioned, acid rain is caused by the mixture of chemical emissions with the elements of the troposphere. It s very important to note that water has a natural acidity, it s the excess of oxides that cause the problem. But how did those emissions and oxides make it there? Naturally, compounds like carbon dioxide(CO2), nitric oxide(NO), and sulfur dioxide(SO2), are released through just a few processes: decomposition of organic matter, electric discharge(reactions with lightning and the ozone), as well as release of gasses in volcanic eruptions. However, these only contribute to the natural acidity of water. Human ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The peasant commune was essentially the only bastion of representative government in Russia. However, the peasant commune had little influence in any political forum above that of the village or farming community. The divining difficulty of Russia in this period was the power of Tsar Nicholas II. His ideals were rooted in the distant past of autocrats and despots. Though he wished his nation to modernize in its production and industrialization processes, he refused to accept political change. He continued to impose his will on a vast empire of some 129 million people through a small imperial bureaucracy, which served at the sovereign s pleasure.
