Dichotomies In Life Of Pi
Life of Pi, by Yann Martel, follows a boy named Pi as he floats aboard a lifeboat through the Pacific
Ocean; joining him on this journey is a tiger, affectionately named Richard Parker. Pi, himself, is a
bright boy who is Hindu by birth, but goes on to become devout in both Islam and Christianity,
refusing to acknowledge the antagonist relationship between these beliefs. Pi s family were once
zookeepers, and decided to move from their home in India to Canada following the economic collapse
of their zoo. In the middle of their voyage across the sea, their ship sinks in a treacherous storm,
leaving Pi, a hyena, a zebra with a broken leg, an orangutan, and a tiger aboard a lifeboat.
As the days go by, the hyena grown hungry and attacks the zebra. After the hyena has eaten the zebra,
it turns its appetite towards the orangutang, who puts up a tremendous fight, but ultimately ... Show

As I had not been raised in a religious home, the construct seemed foreign to me. I failed to see its
purpose in the lives of those around me. In the novel, Martel presents two dichotomies: the story of Pi
and the beasts, or the story of man and a struggle to survive (the cook, crewman, and mother). While
the latter seems more acceptable on its face, the former presents a beautiful story filled with meaning.
Through Martel s writing, I see religion less as an identification or a label, but rather as a lens in
which a follower views the world. Where I might see the ordinary, others may see the divine. This
novel inspired me to be more accepting of religion and its purpose for its followers. The book also
helped me consider flaws in human nature flaws that I often found in myself. This complex novel was
written so beautifully that it inspired me to become a better writer, a better thinker, and, more
importantly, increasingly accepting of the others and the lenses through which they understand their

Analysis Of B. Jones s A Twenty Eight Book Series Written...
Junie B. Jones is a twenty eight book series written by Barbara Park for ages five through nine. The
series had been under close scrutiny due to the main character Junie B. s lack of maturity and self
discipline, also, her language and mispronunciation of words. There are some that even believe that
Junie B. actually has some form of learning disability. But what if all of her disciplinary issues, her
shouting in class, her immaturity, and even some of her speech impediments stem from not her own
learning incompetencies, but her teachers . In a classroom a teacher has the ability to either build a
student s confidence and sense of industry or their skepticism and inferiority. The main way in which
they can do this is through their teaching ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Taking what happened in the interactions and decided what category of class management was being
utilized out of our possibilities. Also, how Junie B. reacted to each style of teaching whether is was a
positive or negative interactions and whether it had a positive or negative reaction correlating with it.
After deciding what our topic was going to deal with we decided to pull examples from real life that
also illustrated our main ideas, so, the group also pulled examples of classroom management from
bulletin boards seen in classrooms at the schools Raymond F Brandes and Creston that included clip
system of disciplinary action, expectations of reading comprehension in grade levels, and a smiley to
frown face disciplinary system. Within the four books we found that between the interactions of three
different teachers Junie B. was exposed to PEP styes of teaching, authoritative styles of teaching,
authoritarian styles of teaching, and permissive styles of teaching.
Keeping in mind that this table is only based off of four books in the Junie B. series and the entire
series is twenty eight books in total with eighteen set when Junie B. is in Kindergarten interacting with
Mrs. and sometimes Principal, while only ten books in the series take place when Junie B. is in first
grade interacting with Mr. Scary its is safe to say that each young reader, if they read the entire series,
is getting a heavier dose of permissive, and authoritarian class management representation

Conceptualizing Addiction Paper
Introduction
For many years, individuals have battled substance abuse and addiction. My position comes from
hearing about it, having seeing results from it, and reading about it, also developing my own thoughts
about addiction. Weil and Rosen (1993) believe that a drug use (and addiction) results from humans
longing for a sense of completeness and wholeness, and searching for satisfaction outside of
themselves. McNeece and DiNitto (2012) says the reason why people continue to use drugs to the
point of becoming a physically and/ or psychologically dependent on them are more complex, some
have tried to explain this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, the legacy of treating alcoholism and drug addiction as sin or moral weakness continues to
influence public policies regarding alcohol and drug abuse (McNeece DiNitto, 2012).
Competing Views
The model appeals to our common sense because it is consistent with liberal views. In a liberal
society, free will and individual autonomy are highly emphasized and valued ideals (Wilbanks, 1989).
Addicts are conceived as free willed individuals making rational choices and the reason they engage in
drug use is because they have bad morals. However, individuals with good morals are just likely to
use drugs such as alcohol or marijuana. If this is the case other factors are present. In the face of
reality, the moral model is insufficient to capture the phenomenon of drug addiction (Wilbanks, 1989).
The Disease Model
The disease model of addiction rests on three primary assumptions predisposition to use a drug, loss of
control over use, and progression (Krivanek, 1988, p.202). These physiological alterations cause an
undeniable desire to take more drugs (McNeece DiNitto, 2012). Addicts are viewed as individuals
with an incurable disease with drug addiction as the symptom. The disease model argues users cannot
be held accountable for their addictions (Kirvanek, 1988).
Competing Views
As the disease model argues that there is no cure for addiction, the only treatments available aims to
reduce or suppress the urge to use drugs (McNeece DiNitto, 2012). Firstly, addicts

General Electric Company And Thomson Houston Company
INTRODUCTION
General Electric was formed out of a merger between Edison General Electric Company and Thomson
Houston Company in 1882. It has since lead the industry in energy and medial advancements from the
first dynamos to X ray machines. The company has since expanded in many different areas such as
energy, health, transportation and infrastructure, and employs over 300,000 employees in over 100
countries around the world. The case examines GE s need to innovate in a competitive market. GE
wanted to focus on the green energy space. Green energy space was a growing area for new
opportunities and investments. Venture capital funding in the green energy space only amounted to 1 2

and there would be no gain for a while. Most of the ventures were predicted to gain traction 12 18

Epicurus Vs Aristotle
What s the one thing everyone wants to achieve in life and is the ultimate end for every action people
do? Philosophers from almost every generation are trying to figure out what that is, some even
referring to it as the good . But what is the good ? Epicurus would argue that the good is simply
pleasure, honor, and glory; however, that is not the ultimate end for every action people do. According
to Aristotle, the ultimate end that every action seeks is happiness and that s the good everyone desires.
The idea of happiness being the ultimate end, is superior to Epicurus s idea of pleasure, honor, and
glory, due to the fact that all those things are intended to bring forth some form of happiness.
Therefore, happiness must be what everyone ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

becoming happy. All these ideas when combined create a complete understanding of happiness and
express the important role happiness has in making a life worth living. Not only that, but the journey
toward happiness through the virtues and an active soul help to develop peoples character making
them a better person overall. Happiness after all is the good that philosophers have been trying to
discover and it becomes more evident after studying happiness in more depth. As has been noted,
happiness is the end for every action people do, whether it be though pleasure or virtue, in the end the

Fishing, Celebes Sea, By The Sea
Fishing, Celebes Sea
In the middle of the ocean, all that can be seen is miles and miles of the alluring ocean. The color of
the waves are a spectacular mix of a light green, an astonishing teal, and the amazing darkness of the
blue. The tides lightly brushing against the welcoming homes of all the nice people. In the small boat
ahead contains an innocent child with his mother outside what can only be their house. The pleasant
subtlety of the sea breeze peacefully floating in the air causes relaxation that cannot be helped.
If you look up you can see the beautiful sky extending as far as the eye can see. The clouds soaring
into the distance beautifly. The mountains in the distance, elegantly sitting in the distance. The birds
chirping their song in mid day. This place gives a sense of Everything that can be seen is beautiful.
The wind blows constantly, causing sea mist to blow in the faces of the fishermen. Underneath the
boat is the clear, blue water with fish swimming, clueless, without a care in the world. The air has the
taste of salt and freshly caught fish. And the The smell is unmistakeable, with a hint of seaweed. In the
distance, great hills covered by clouds can be seen. Houses gather close by above the water. People
could almost say that the houses are floating. Millions of people gather in small boats, waiting
patiently for the single movement of their fishing wire. Every once in awhile, someone s laughter can
be heard above the sound of the small,

For both bacterial infections, some researchers recommend that to eliminate persistent infections, it
should use a laboratory test after the first infection before estimating the number of repeat infections.
In contrast, other researchers consider that the infected patient should be asymptomatic for at least two
weeks before counting as a new infection. However, the majority of researchers set a number of days
after the initial infection to determine the burden of repeat infections (Hillis et al., 1994; Richey et al.,
1999; Barnett and Brundage, 2001; Burstein et al., 2001). The most common time frame for
consideration as a repeat infection for CT and NG is that diagnosed 30 days or more after the
preceding infection. This minimal time interval is based on the evidence that nucleic acid
amplification tests may occasionally detect residual chlamydia deoxyribonucleic acid or ribonucleic
acid to three weeks after antimicrobial therapy (Workowski et al., 1996; Gaydos et al., 1998; Morre et

The court first affirmed that the widow was required to comply with the Indiana Tort Claims Act
(ITCA) notice of claim provision in the Illinois action for reasons of comity, since the court s rulings
will be recognized across jurisdictions. However, but both state s statutes would have prevented the
widow s lawsuits, since the widow waited almost two years to file her complaint. As such, her action
against the university was barred because the ITCA provision for immunity for political subdivisions
included state universities under Ind. Code § 34 4 16.5 2(f)(7). The court also found that the pilot was
acting within the scope of his employment when he gave the aerobatics demonstration in which the
plane crashed, as he was an aerobatics instructor at the university. Finally the court ruled that the pilot
s conduct was not outrageous, as the flight was routine, and therefore the pilot s conduct did not take
the case outside the scope of ITCA immunity. BACKGROUND: Both James Jernigan and Danny
Wells were employed by Vincennes University. On October 3, 1987 they were performing aerial stunts
as part of a normal routine during an annual Dad s weekend at the

Christopher Novan s Use Of Narrative Structure In Memento
In Christopher Nolan s 2001 neo noir psychological thriller, Memento, he explores the idea of trust
through a unique narrative structure. The film explores trust through the protagonist, Leonard Shelby
and his interactions with characters, Natalie and Teddy in his hunt for the man who raped his wife.
The structure of the film is split into two parts: colour scenes (the main plot line) and black and white
scenes (the sub plot line). Nolan alternates between the two; however, the colour scenes are shown
backwards in time, from Leonard s point of view, in first person; and the black and whites scenes are
told forwards in a documentary style with just voice over and simple images.
The start of the film opens with a scene literally shown backwards, which makes the audience aware
of the structure of the way the story will be told. There is repetition within the colour scenes, when
one colour scenes starts it is the end of the next one. The use of this makes the audience rethink
everything they have been told in the previous scene. This adds the effect of watching the film how
Leonard would perceive it. The main ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However this is not the case: Teddy is the one helping Leonard find the man who raped his wife and
protects him throughout. In the end Teddy is shot in the head by Leonard. Due to the way the film is
structured Teddy is made out to be the bad person, but towards the end of the movie it is found out that
Teddy was there the whole time to help Leonard and make sure that nothing happens to him on his
investigation. Due to the unique narrative structure of this film, the perception of Teddy is all wrong.
Nolan uses this technique as it makes the audience form their own views on the characters and keeps
them guessing until the end of the film. Due to the narrative structure, the film relies heavily on first
impressions on characters, however, these views change as the film

audience by Debra Oswald in Gary s house and podcast through the lives of fictitious characters based
on real Australian People. She chooses themes such as people marginalised in society, challenging
gender roles and the past affecting the present knowing that the audience will relate to it. By using
these ideas with the diverse range of characters, Oswald is able to show how people need resilience

development throughout the play.

where he belongs in the world. Oswald gave Dave a difficult problem and that is feeling the guilt of
the death of a new friend where he had a chance to save him. But timing matters...it would ve been
different by using this emotive language the audience felt connected to Dave even more and they
would have want to know how he can over come this event. Normally Dave would just give up like
many people would but Gary s death is Dave s agent of change. He in the past would have never
gotten involved in physical labour nor a deep relationship, but after Gary s death he helped build the
house while getting in a deep relationship with Christine, thus showing his ability of resilience.
Oswald didn t want to end her play with Gary s death as expressed in the podcast so she made Gary s
death as a catalyst of change and hoped that it was the right solution . As the progression of play the
audience was treated to characters transitioning such as Dave from little resilience to strong amounts
of resilience in bouncing back from the passing of Gary and implicating the importance of

Whether any group of people is thought of as deadbeats or not, humans were made to succeed. I

The J. Paul Getty Museum
For this essay, we were required to go to the Getty Villa in Malibu and look for specific works of art in
the J. Paul Getty Museum. The Getty Villa is on a hill adjacent to Malibu beach and requires a
reservation to get inside. They do not allow pedestrian entrances, so I had to take public transportation
and show proof of my Metro bus receipt to get in. Once inside, I took a shuttle up a curvy hill to the
actual museum. When I got to the actual entrance, I was taken aback by how beautiful not only the
view was, but the Villa was as well. It did not take me long to find the five artworks. The first work of
art we were required to look at was a grave stele. There were a collection of them against a wall on the
second floor of the Getty Villa. The one that stuck out the most to me was titled Grave Stele of
Herophanta and Posideos which was dated around 150 B.C. It is a Greek grave stele that was made in
Smyrna, which is what we today call Turkey. The stele was around 4 feet tall and made out of marble.
The back of the stele was not viewable, but the front had a lot of detail. On the front at the top displays
what resembles a triangular pediment typically seen in Greek temples. Underneath that are two wreath
like objects. In the center, there is a portrait that shows a family consisting of a husband and wife with
two children. The woman is holding a wreath and the two kids are crowded around the father. Each

Fiction, Between Inner Life and Collective Memory. A Methodological Reflection. François Xavier
Lavenne, Virginie Renard, François Tollet1 Introduction In the writing of their fictional works,
novelists often have to reflect on the functioning of memory, for memory lies at the heart both of inner
life and of human experience in general. It is indeed in the works of writers such as Marcel Proust or
Jorge Luis Borges that the best exemplifications of the subjective experience of memory are to be
found. However, from a strictly mnemonic point of view, literature provides more than a means of
reflecting on memory: it is also the site of the rebirth and construction of individual and collective
memories, which can then serve as a foundation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Memories were first attributed directly to a collective entity by Maurice Halbwachs in his epoch
making La Mémoire Collective (The Collective Memory).5 This sociologist claims that all memory
depends, on the one hand, of the group in which one lives and, on the other, to the status one holds in
that group. To remember, one therefore needs to situate oneself within a current of collective thought.6
As a result, Halbwachs concludes that there are no purely individual memories, i.e. memories that
would belong only to the individual, and of which the individual would be the unique source.7 We are
therefore not the authentic subjects of attribution of our memories. Several writers have attempted to
reconcile these conflicting on individual memory and collective memory. For example, Paul Ricoeur
argues that memory does belong to the realm of interiority, for we see ourselves as the true possessors
of our own memories.8 However, memory also involves the other and fully bears its mark.9 From its
declarative phase, memory enters the public sphere because a testimony is always presented to, and
received by, an other. Moreover, Ricoeur, following in the footsteps of Halbwach, asserts that peers
can assist an individual in the work of remembering.10 He therefore draws the conclusion that
memory processes involve both the individual and the group. Ricoeur thus differentiates among three
different poles of attribution of memory: there exists, between

The Narrator s Perspective In The Lottery, By Shirley Jackson
It was a warm sunny June day when children who are off from school for summer vacation frolicked

I was able to gather this by seeing key words such as they and: Tessie Hutchinson was late. There are
many characters in The Lottery by Shirley Jackson, such as Mr. Graves, The children, Tessie
Hutchinson, Mr. Summers. Etc. But one of the ones that really stuck out is Mr. Summers. He is the
only character that the narrator goes into detail about; even if it s not the typical description. He is
described as round faced jovial man who has time and energy. That description consequently makes
him a round character, everyone else is really flat cause not much description was given for them. He
is also static, because he seems to stay the same, and to me he seems bored due to his tone in the
beginning and the end. Mr. Summers is the antagonist, so is everyone else in the village which
includes Tessie who was stoned to death. I say this because everyone is condoning such acts of evil,
and Tessie didn t say anything till it was her facing evil, even though she too has stoned someone in
the past. Characterization is given indirectly, because the reader doesn t even get a sense of who Mr.
Summers or any of the other characters really are until the end. Mr. Summer holds great deal of
significance and symbolism. He represents the start of the summer, which brings the lottery each year.
There are others who names have much meaning to it, Such as Old Man Warner, who is one of the

The Media Of Police Officers
For many of us our portrayal of police officers has been shaped by media. The media creates shows
such as Rookie Blue which shows police officers and their day to day lives. These shows are heavily
fantasied. Media portrays the life of an officer as dangerous and fast. Most of the public views an
officers job as chasing the bad guy and solving crimes, but in reality it is far more than that. These
mythical portrayals of officers create false images of police officers. Majority of police officers do not
spend their days chasing the bad guys, it is much more than that. The text notes that medias ideal cop
spends more time fighting crime than an actual officer in their whole career (Kappeler Potter, 2005,
p.237). If media had a true image ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The commonality amongst officers makes it easier for officers to relate to one another, in turn a police
sub culture is created. John Cochran and Max Bromley (2003) explain that the police sub culture is
made up of negative attitudes to restrictions placed on the police. This can be things such as gun
restriction and how officers need to use Tasers before they fire at someone they perceive to be a threat.
The job of an officer can effect their behaviors for the reason that the job requires full attention. I
found it surprising that it is perceived that a domestic violence call is the most dangerous call an
officer can receive. Police officers respond to a variety of calls that can be categorized as dangerous,
but to say the most dangerous are domestic calls is misleading. Police are not often killed responding
to domestic disturbances (Mona Margarita, 1980). The text notes that police are more likely to be
killed responding to different calls. Police officers are more likely to be killed responding to robbers
trying to run away from a crime scene (Margarita, 1980). It is a myth to believe that domestic calls are
the most fatal. Officers are more likely to be killed by a robber because they view the officer as
imminent danger (Margarita, 1980). It is worth noting that the public perceives an officers job as
always fighting crime. Megan O Neill (2011) explains that police cannot

preceding is important to take into mind, does it always have to be so serious? Any individual who
grows up does either childish actions or just simple mistakes. O Connor shows how the formality of
this can be taken to an extreme point with the story of Jackie. In First Confession he creates a
humorous tone with the utilization of figurative language and characterization. To begin with, First
Confession holds a strong message, but it holds it with a touch of humor. With this story being told
from a reflective point of view, it really shows the comical sides of the story. Most of us have those
stories that as we reflect on them now, can be very funny; the same was for Jackie. Jackie wrote about
his first confession, which was probably from a few years back and now he highlights the funny parts
of them. For example, the rivalry between Nora, his sister, and him. A rivalry which then seemed very
serious for Jackie, was not that serious in reality. As well, his grandmother s arrival was so bad for him
then that he even plotted her murder. The humorous side of this story is reflected mainly in his
conversation with the priest. The priest tells him, Between ourselves, there s a lot of people I d like to
do the same to, but I d never have the nerve. By breaking this line of

Diffusion of Osmosis through a Membrane
Introduction
The aim of these experiments are to determine the diffusion of osmosis through a selectively
permeable membrane by using a solute and determining the rate at which concentration moves from
an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration and marking the time taken from the
starting point to the end point. Membranes can be impermeable to larger molecules such as ions and
proteins to pass through where permeable membranes will allow hydrophobic molecules such as lipids
and small molecules like oxygen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide to pass through.
The motive force for the movement of water is the differences in osmotic pressure between ... Show

The percentage indicates the number of grams of solute per 100ml of solution. Secondly, to assemble
the funnel apparatus, you will have to obtain a section of membrane and keep it wet. And then you
will need to place the membrane of the mouth of the funnel and secure it with an elastic band, then
fold the membrane over the first elastic band and secure it with second elastic band. Make sure the
membrane is tight over the mouth of the funnel and it should not leak. The membrane should not be
allowed to get dry during this experiment. Then you need to add one drop of food colouring to your
sugar solution and by doing this it will make it easier to identify the solution in the tube of the thistle
funnel. Then you have to suspend the funnel in the beaker with the mouth of the funnel about 2cm off
the bottom of the beaker. Once done this, you will pour distilled water into the beaker until the water
level is 1cm above the lower rim of the funnel. When you are making the control, you use a dropper to
fill the funnel with coloured distilled water to the first mark which is the lowest point. When you are
making the experiments, you use a dropper to fill the funnel to just below the first mark with the sugar
solution and remember the volume used. You need to watch the movement of the solution and when it
reaches the first mark, make a note of the time because this will be the starting point. The funnel will
be marked at 1mm intervals so allow the solution to rise to exactly 10 mm and make a note of this
time. Once you have done the first replicate empty both funnels and examine the membranes for
damage and then do 2 more replicates using both funnels and both funnels will contain the sugar

Leo Tolstoy View On Art
Leo Tolstoy Theory on art Лев Николаевич Толстой or known in English as Leo Tolstoy, was a
famous Russian writer who is also known as one of the greatest authors of all time. Leo Tolstoy was a
self confident man and was sure of his rightness. However, this self confidence may have caused him
involuntarily, to feel envious. Tolstoy rejected many philosophical views since he was an outspoken
sectarian (philosophical or political group or a form of bigotry, intolerance towards those who hold
different opinions from themselves). Anything that could not be rationally explained, he did not
accept. Tolstoy s theory is that Art begins when a man, with the purpose of communicating to other
people a feeling he once experienced, calls it up again within himself and expresses it by certain
external signs . In Leo Tolstoy s theory, he tries to explain that just because art may look beautiful, it
doesn t mean that it holds any valuable lessons. Of course, there are many counter arguments to this
theory but I will try to look at this in a different perspective. Most of the people of the upper classes
(popes and clerics) in Tolstoy s time did not in fact believe in anything. Because the way the church
taught everyone caused these people to stop believing, this may have influenced Tolstoy s Theory.
Once seeing its inconsistency , sectarians such as Helchitsky, Francis of Assisi and Plato, were not
able to acknowledge the moral and social teaching of Christ, because a belief like that

Demarco s Systems Analysis Method Essay
Outline the structured specification produced by DeMarco s systems analysis method.
What do you think are the main advantages of specifying a computer based system by means of such a
structured specification?
How adequately, do you think, does this method deal with the human aspects of information systems
changes?
According to DeMarco s structured analysis, it is a study of a problem leading to the specification of a
new system prior to implementation of that system. DeMarco also makes it very clear in his book (The
Structured Analysis and System Specification a Yourdon Book) that the most important product of the
analysis phase of the life cycle is the specification document. Different organizations are using ...

How I Operate Within A Working Environment
Introduction Self reflection is the key in gaining an outlook of a student s strengths and weaknesses.
By understanding these characteristics, one can take action to improve upon them. Within this
assignment I will discuss the tasks and challenges that the company Midland Heart has presented. This
will involve reflecting upon such challenges to assess how I operate within a working environment.
My primary role was to shadow the manager of the law team to study the ways in which she organises
and communicate with her staff. The bulk of my role involved going through housing cases to
understand how the law team is used as a function within the business. Furthermore I also worked

In reality however, there were a number of times where I asked for assistance particularly regarding
some of the legal documents. In retrospect, I should have asked for more detail about certain jobs to
clarify some of the terms. Further to this I had to ensure that my progress was being monitored and
developed and this was maintained by semi regular meetings and informal conversations. Reflecting
on my first work placement, it was rare to have such meetings which often left it difficult to
understand how my skills were being developed. Macduff (2012, p. 24) supports Cooks previous point
going on to suggest that settling within the second year is seen as more advantageous as there is a
natural improvement in confidence. Despite this I still struggled to confidently operate as Midland
Heart was such a drastic difference to Savers. This oversight could have been avoided if I had
discussed the issue with either my tutor or manager to gain an insight into the correct office etiquette.
Networking One of the purposes of pursuing a work placement is to meet working people to
understand how they work. Brooks (2012) establishes that networking within your organisation could
also help an employee with future job opportunities. It was therefore important to utilise this
opportunity to gain a number of contacts in a field that I was interested in. As my previous placement
was in an organisation that I already worked for, it was difficult to find new contacts. This

Theatre Personal Statement Essay
What got you interested in Theatre?
My interest in theatre started when I was living in Spain. My parents started a theatre company with
other military and US teachers. From the ages of 4 9, I got to play small roles or work backstage on
plays ranging from Shakespeare to Neil Simon. Where did you study and how long did it take?
In Undergrad, I majored in theatre and opera. Immediately after graduating I continued my studies in
theatre and opera performance in graduate school. The overall time in University was 7 years. After
Graduate school, I continued to train as an actor in NYC for three years at Terry Schreiber Studios.
How about your time on television, how did it differ from your theatre experience?

the last scene where CYRANO dies. Oh, the simplicity of delivering heightened language and pure

The second memory was when I was cast in a National Tour of SHLEMIEL THE FIRST. The super

What Are The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Studying Abroad
In the last century, the contemporary world has become more globalized than before. There has been a
worldwide integration in different fields of life such as economic, political, business, trade, financial,
and educational fields. In order to deal with this globalization, students, in all over the world, should
be opened to other countries and cultures which exceed the boundary of their nation. Studying abroad,
which means leaving the homeland country and pursuing the education in another country ( Dervin
Byron, 2008), could be one of the ways for the students to explore this globalized world. It has been
mentioned by the Institute of International Education (IIE) that in the last two decades the number of
students studying abroad worldwide has tripled (Lieb, 2016). Should students be more encouraged ...

Their point of view is that it is hard for these students to be responsible for arranging money for
university s tuition fees and for their living expenses. Although that is correct to a certain extent, there
are some weaknesses in this view. Firstly, students who have the intention to study abroad would put a
prior financial plan with their parents. That helps them to know their budget, and to spend money
according to it. Also, if there are some unexpected circumstances happen, they will be assisted
financially by their parents. Secondly, some universities and schools provide full or partial
scholarships for the international students (Cadd,2012). For example, University of British Columbia

Friday Night Lights Book vs. Movie Essay
Friday Night lights
Is High School football a sport, or is it more than that to some people? I ve learned that the book is
more sociological, which means that it focused on our human society of racial issues and also
emphasizes the economy and the divide between the wealthy residents of one city versus the more
working class denizens of another are all subjects that are given an in depth examination. This is more
of the main or focal point of the whole book and in not so much in the movie. Although Bissinger s
story is a true life recounting of the 1988 football season of the Permian High School team, it reads
like fiction and even though I believe his book is superior, the theatrical adaptation still stands apart as

impact they have on a small city in Texas.
The novel begins with preseason football in the heat of a Texas summer. The players and coaches

Trauma and Stressor Related Disorders. I also considered Dissociative Disorders, although
Dissociative Disorders are not labeled as a Trauma and Stressor Related Disorders in the DSM 5, they
are triggered by traumatic events. The primary disorder I thought of after my second session with

I am not sure whether to report schizophreniform Disorder or Schizophrenia because it is not clear
how long Caleb has displayed negative symptoms and symptoms of catatonia. It is also unclear
whether his behavior is due to the physiological effects of a substance, which is important to consider
since he was caught drinking alcohol. However, Schizophreniform Disorder and Schizophrenia is still
worth considering due to the possibility that Caleb may have had a hallucination and was rather
obsessed with his fantasies during his daycare years, as mentioned in the first session. Caleb also may
have another symptom of catatonia, making a total of three symptoms of catatonia, which is the
minimum requirement. Caleb exhibited negativism by not reporting or reacting to bullying behavior
targeted at him; Caleb simply ignores his peers when they tease him, rather than respond or report
them. Moreover, there is still reason to consider Autism Spectrum Disorder, based on his mother s and
homeroom teacher s report. During the second session, Caleb s mother admitted that her sister has
severe autism, indicating that there may be a genetic link to Caleb s eccentric behavior. Furthermore,
his teacher reported that Caleb is academically average, and has exceptional written vocabulary skills,

Examples Of Racism In The Bluest Eye

The Hurt of Internalized Racism
Racist ideology is institutionalized when how people s interactions reflects on an understanding that
they share the same beliefs. However, in The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison, the topic of racism is
approached in a very unique way. The characters within the novel are subjected to internalizing a set
of beliefs that are extremely fragmented. In accepting white standards of beauty, the community
compromises their children s upbringing, their economic means, and social standings. Proving
furthermore that the novel has more to do with these factors than actual ethnicity at all.
In The Bluest Eye, characters experience a variety of oppressive , that give rise to the never ending
cycle of victimization in both the families and neighborhood. Throughout the novel, the black
community accepts white beauty ideals, for example, judging Maureen s light skin to be highly
attractive in comparison to Pecola s darker features. Racism is also apparent in other indirect ways.
There is a general sense of worthlessness that certain colored characters subconsciously integrate into
their daily lives, even without the constant reminder of their apparent ugliness . For example, the
Breedloves did not live in a storefront because they were having temporary difficulty adjusting to the
cutbacks at the plant. They lived there because they were poor and black, and they stayed there
because they believed they were ugly.

School Lunch Program Essay
Public school lunch programs have come a long way since the 1970 s. Most initiatives were privately
ran which meant big variation from city to city and even school to school. Legal complexities and a
lack of support from the Board of Education made it nearly impossible to create a sustainable
program. It was not until the agriculture industry realized that public schools served as a market for
surplus foods that school lunch programs gained momentum on a national scale. Despite the surpluses
later being prioritized for the war efforts during world war II, it was obvious that school lunch
programs were popular. It was just a constant challenge on how to keep them funded. Finally, two bills
were introduced to secure permanent funding. Drafts and numerous revisions ultimately ended in the

Comparing Kripke s Naming And Necessity
In Naming and Necessity , Philosopher Saul Kripke believes that there are some contingent truths that
can be known a priori, or independent of experience. It is standard to believe that a priori truths
coincide with necessary truths rather than with contingent. I will argue in agreeance with Kripke.
There are cases in which contingent a priori truths exist.
A priori knowledge is knowledge gained independent of experience. It is the knowledge that can be
gained from learning the language, but without actual experience or need to consult the external
world. For example, someone who knows that All bachelors are unmarried men does not need to
experience being unmarried to defend this statement. By having knowledge of the language, one
knows that, by definition, a bachelor is an unmarried man.
By contrast, a posteriori propositions can only be known through experience of the external world. If I
say that It is windy outside , then in order to understand this proposition I must have experience of the
weather.
A necessary truth is a truth that could not be false, where a contingent truth is one that could be false.
If you could alter the universe in any possible way, the necessary truths will not change compared to
the contingent truths. The typical way ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Advertising Affects A Wide Variety
Advertising is a concept all Americans have been exposed to in their lives. It is a normal component of
life that affects Americans more than they are led to believe. Advertising is constantly evolving.
Advertising has been forced to change to meet up with the changing of times. The price spent on
advertising raises at a rapid rate each and every year. Moreover, the every increasing money spent on
advertising shows that it is effective on reaching and influencing the American consumer.
Advertising affects a wide variety and a large amount of people. According to The Statistics Portal,
The United States is, by far, the largest advertising market in the world. In 2015, more than 180 billion
U.S. dollars were spent in advertising in the United States. This figure is more than double the amount
spent in advertising in China, the second largest ad market in the world. From this, it is effortless to
see that American s are highly exposed to advertisements.
According to the International Advertising Association, Advertising can encourage companies to
compete and provide new products. This encourages more consumers to buy because these products
meet the needs and wants of more consumers. Thus, the economy is positively affected. In addition,
advertising can help create more jobs. As the demand for products and services goes up because of
advertising, more people are needed to manufacture, supply, ship and test those products and services.
Thus, more jobs are created. It has

Occupy Wall Street Equality
Three years after the 2008 financial crisis, the U.S. economy remained a mess, leaving millions
unemployed. The housing market was struggling to recover three years after the financial crisis,
increasing foreclosures. Occupy Wall Street arose in response to the middle class people who are
getting battered by economic forces beyond their control, while elites in the private and public sector
prospered. In this paper, I will examine Occupy Wall Street s confrontation on the U.S. wealth
inequality and its protest in New York, participants and its attempt to encourage equality. Occupy Wall
Street (OWS) is a leaderless resistance movement. People had joined the movement and participated,
no matter what the gender, ethnicity, age, politics, income, occupation and education degree they had.
The majority of the protesters are young people under 30 and many of them are unemployed or
underemployed. They are frustrated that the hard working middle class is getting poor, yet Wall Street
stays wealthy. In response to the frustration, Occupy Wall Street was initiated on September 17, 2011
in Zuccotti Park. The blog post that sparked the movement was by the Canadian magazine Adbusters,
Kalle Lasn and Micah White, Canadian anti consumerist. In a blog post on July 13, 2011, Adbusters
proposed a peaceful occupation of Wall Street to protest about ... Show more content on

No one went to jail for the financial crisis and inequality remains. What began in September 2011 as a
small group of protesters camping out in Manhattan s Zuccotti Park ignited a national and global
movement calling out the ruling class of elites by connecting the dots between corporate and political
power. The camps may be gone and Occupy may no longer be visible on the streets, but the gulf
between the haves and the have nots is still there, and growing. Income inequality is a problem that all
2016 presidential candidates must deal with because they can no longer afford not

Social Class And Social System In The Elizabethan Era
Upper middle, middle and lower, these are the modern day classes Americans are familiar with. But
what many don t know is between 1558 1603, the Elizabethan Era, the same social class system was
already being used. The only difference was that they were more in depth. Although the social class
system is still in place today during the Elizabethan era it was used to place people in categories based
on their financial state, family history, and beliefs. The social classes of the Elizabethan era were
divided into three broad categories and subdivided into smaller specified groups. The broader
categories became known as estates ( Elizabethan Era ). There was the first, second and third estate.
The first estate consisted of clergy ( Social Order 58). Although they were all Roman Catholic clergy
these people were broken up into smaller sections. The smaller sections divided the ordained from the
unordained (Social Status and Community ). The Ordained were known as seculars an example of
someone who would fall under this division was the pope. The second estate, was of the nobility. The
nobility included anyone who worked for or was a part of the royal family. Besides the church this
estate held all the judicial and political power ( Social Order 60). They were many subdivisions in this
estate the main one was the monarch. It was composed of, kings, queens, dukes, counts, and different
ranks of knights (Ferraro 44). The third and final estate was for the poor. Granted, not all

  • 2. Dichotomies In Life Of Pi Life of Pi, by Yann Martel, follows a boy named Pi as he floats aboard a lifeboat through the Pacific Ocean; joining him on this journey is a tiger, affectionately named Richard Parker. Pi, himself, is a bright boy who is Hindu by birth, but goes on to become devout in both Islam and Christianity, refusing to acknowledge the antagonist relationship between these beliefs. Pi s family were once zookeepers, and decided to move from their home in India to Canada following the economic collapse of their zoo. In the middle of their voyage across the sea, their ship sinks in a treacherous storm, leaving Pi, a hyena, a zebra with a broken leg, an orangutan, and a tiger aboard a lifeboat. As the days go by, the hyena grown hungry and attacks the zebra. After the hyena has eaten the zebra, it turns its appetite towards the orangutang, who puts up a tremendous fight, but ultimately ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As I had not been raised in a religious home, the construct seemed foreign to me. I failed to see its purpose in the lives of those around me. In the novel, Martel presents two dichotomies: the story of Pi and the beasts, or the story of man and a struggle to survive (the cook, crewman, and mother). While the latter seems more acceptable on its face, the former presents a beautiful story filled with meaning. Through Martel s writing, I see religion less as an identification or a label, but rather as a lens in which a follower views the world. Where I might see the ordinary, others may see the divine. This novel inspired me to be more accepting of religion and its purpose for its followers. The book also helped me consider flaws in human nature flaws that I often found in myself. This complex novel was written so beautifully that it inspired me to become a better writer, a better thinker, and, more importantly, increasingly accepting of the others and the lenses through which they understand their ... The series had been under close scrutiny due to the main character Junie B. s lack of maturity and self discipline, also, her language and mispronunciation of words. There are some that even believe that Junie B. actually has some form of learning disability. But what if all of her disciplinary issues, her shouting in class, her immaturity, and even some of her speech impediments stem from not her own learning incompetencies, but her teachers . In a classroom a teacher has the ability to either build a student s confidence and sense of industry or their skepticism and inferiority. The main way in which they can do this is through their teaching ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Taking what happened in the interactions and decided what category of class management was being utilized out of our possibilities. Also, how Junie B. reacted to each style of teaching whether is was a positive or negative interactions and whether it had a positive or negative reaction correlating with it. After deciding what our topic was going to deal with we decided to pull examples from real life that also illustrated our main ideas, so, the group also pulled examples of classroom management from bulletin boards seen in classrooms at the schools Raymond F Brandes and Creston that included clip system of disciplinary action, expectations of reading comprehension in grade levels, and a smiley to frown face disciplinary system. Within the four books we found that between the interactions of three different teachers Junie B. was exposed to PEP styes of teaching, authoritative styles of teaching, authoritarian styles of teaching, and permissive styles of teaching. Keeping in mind that this table is only based off of four books in the Junie B. series and the entire series is twenty eight books in total with eighteen set when Junie B. is in Kindergarten interacting with Mrs. and sometimes Principal, while only ten books in the series take place when Junie B. is in first grade interacting with Mr. Scary its is safe to say that each young reader, if they read the entire series, is getting a heavier dose of permissive, and authoritarian class management representation ... MontoyaW Conceptualizingaddictionpaper Conceptualizing Addiction Paper Montoya Williams BSHS/455 November 4, 2014 Carla Malewicz Conceptualizing Addiction Paper Introduction For many years, individuals have battled substance abuse and addiction. My position comes from hearing about it, having seeing results from it, and reading about it, also developing my own thoughts about addiction. Weil and Rosen (1993) believe that a drug use (and addiction) results from humans longing for a sense of completeness and wholeness, and searching for satisfaction outside of themselves. McNeece and DiNitto (2012) says the reason why people continue to use drugs to the point of becoming a physically and/ or psychologically dependent on them are more complex, some have tried to explain this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, the legacy of treating alcoholism and drug addiction as sin or moral weakness continues to influence public policies regarding alcohol and drug abuse (McNeece DiNitto, 2012). Competing Views The model appeals to our common sense because it is consistent with liberal views. In a liberal society, free will and individual autonomy are highly emphasized and valued ideals (Wilbanks, 1989). Addicts are conceived as free willed individuals making rational choices and the reason they engage in drug use is because they have bad morals. However, individuals with good morals are just likely to use drugs such as alcohol or marijuana. If this is the case other factors are present. In the face of reality, the moral model is insufficient to capture the phenomenon of drug addiction (Wilbanks, 1989). The Disease Model The disease model of addiction rests on three primary assumptions predisposition to use a drug, loss of control over use, and progression (Krivanek, 1988, p.202). These physiological alterations cause an undeniable desire to take more drugs (McNeece DiNitto, 2012). Addicts are viewed as individuals with an incurable disease with drug addiction as the symptom. The disease model argues users cannot be held accountable for their addictions (Kirvanek, 1988). Competing Views As the disease model argues that there is no cure for addiction, the only treatments available aims to reduce or suppress the urge to use drugs (McNeece DiNitto, 2012). Philosophers from almost every generation are trying to figure out what that is, some even referring to it as the good . But what is the good ? Epicurus would argue that the good is simply pleasure, honor, and glory; however, that is not the ultimate end for every action people do. According to Aristotle, the ultimate end that every action seeks is happiness and that s the good everyone desires. The idea of happiness being the ultimate end, is superior to Epicurus s idea of pleasure, honor, and glory, due to the fact that all those things are intended to bring forth some form of happiness. For both bacterial infections, some researchers recommend that to eliminate persistent infections, it should use a laboratory test after the first infection before estimating the number of repeat infections. In contrast, other researchers consider that the infected patient should be asymptomatic for at least two weeks before counting as a new infection. The court first affirmed that the widow was required to comply with the Indiana Tort Claims Act (ITCA) notice of claim provision in the Illinois action for reasons of comity, since the court s rulings will be recognized across jurisdictions. However, but both state s statutes would have prevented the widow s lawsuits, since the widow waited almost two years to file her complaint. As such, her action against the university was barred because the ITCA provision for immunity for political subdivisions included state universities under Ind. Code § 34 4 16.5 2(f)(7). The court also found that the pilot was acting within the scope of his employment when he gave the aerobatics demonstration in which the plane crashed, as he was an aerobatics instructor at the university. Finally the court ruled that the pilot s conduct was not outrageous, as the flight was routine, and therefore the pilot s conduct did not take the case outside the scope of ITCA immunity. • 12. Christopher Novan s Use Of Narrative Structure In Memento In Christopher Nolan s 2001 neo noir psychological thriller, Memento, he explores the idea of trust through a unique narrative structure. The film explores trust through the protagonist, Leonard Shelby and his interactions with characters, Natalie and Teddy in his hunt for the man who raped his wife. The structure of the film is split into two parts: colour scenes (the main plot line) and black and white scenes (the sub plot line). Nolan alternates between the two; however, the colour scenes are shown backwards in time, from Leonard s point of view, in first person; and the black and whites scenes are told forwards in a documentary style with just voice over and simple images. The start of the film opens with a scene literally shown backwards, which makes the audience aware of the structure of the way the story will be told. There is repetition within the colour scenes, when one colour scenes starts it is the end of the next one. The use of this makes the audience rethink everything they have been told in the previous scene. This adds the effect of watching the film how Leonard would perceive it. The main ... • 16. Awareness Fiction, Between Inner Life and Collective Memory. A Methodological Reflection. François Xavier Lavenne, Virginie Renard, François Tollet1 Introduction In the writing of their fictional works, novelists often have to reflect on the functioning of memory, for memory lies at the heart both of inner life and of human experience in general. It is indeed in the works of writers such as Marcel Proust or Jorge Luis Borges that the best exemplifications of the subjective experience of memory are to be found. However, from a strictly mnemonic point of view, literature provides more than a means of reflecting on memory: it is also the site of the rebirth and construction of individual and collective memories, which can then serve as a foundation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Memories were first attributed directly to a collective entity by Maurice Halbwachs in his epoch making La Mémoire Collective (The Collective Memory).5 This sociologist claims that all memory depends, on the one hand, of the group in which one lives and, on the other, to the status one holds in that group. To remember, one therefore needs to situate oneself within a current of collective thought.6 As a result, Halbwachs concludes that there are no purely individual memories, i.e. memories that would belong only to the individual, and of which the individual would be the unique source.7 We are therefore not the authentic subjects of attribution of our memories. Several writers have attempted to reconcile these conflicting on individual memory and collective memory. For example, Paul Ricoeur argues that memory does belong to the realm of interiority, for we see ourselves as the true possessors of our own memories.8 However, memory also involves the other and fully bears its mark.9 From its declarative phase, memory enters the public sphere because a testimony is always presented to, and received by, an other. Moreover, Ricoeur, following in the footsteps of Halbwach, asserts that peers can assist an individual in the work of remembering.10 He therefore draws the conclusion that memory processes involve both the individual and the group. Ricoeur thus differentiates among three different poles of attribution of memory: there exists, between ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There are many characters in The Lottery by Shirley Jackson, such as Mr. Graves, The children, Tessie Hutchinson, Mr. Summers. Etc. But one of the ones that really stuck out is Mr. Summers. He is the only character that the narrator goes into detail about; even if it s not the typical description. He is described as round faced jovial man who has time and energy. That description consequently makes him a round character, everyone else is really flat cause not much description was given for them. He is also static, because he seems to stay the same, and to me he seems bored due to his tone in the beginning and the end. Mr. Summers is the antagonist, so is everyone else in the village which includes Tessie who was stoned to death. I say this because everyone is condoning such acts of evil, and Tessie didn t say anything till it was her facing evil, even though she too has stoned someone in the past. Characterization is given indirectly, because the reader doesn t even get a sense of who Mr. Summers or any of the other characters really are until the end. Most of the public views an officers job as chasing the bad guy and solving crimes, but in reality it is far more than that. These mythical portrayals of officers create false images of police officers. Majority of police officers do not spend their days chasing the bad guys, it is much more than that. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The commonality amongst officers makes it easier for officers to relate to one another, in turn a police sub culture is created. John Cochran and Max Bromley (2003) explain that the police sub culture is made up of negative attitudes to restrictions placed on the police. This can be things such as gun restriction and how officers need to use Tasers before they fire at someone they perceive to be a threat. The job of an officer can effect their behaviors for the reason that the job requires full attention. I found it surprising that it is perceived that a domestic violence call is the most dangerous call an officer can receive. Police officers respond to a variety of calls that can be categorized as dangerous, but to say the most dangerous are domestic calls is misleading. Police are not often killed responding to domestic disturbances (Mona Margarita, 1980). The text notes that police are more likely to be killed responding to different calls. Police officers are more likely to be killed responding to robbers trying to run away from a crime scene (Margarita, 1980). It is a myth to believe that domestic calls are the most fatal. Officers are more likely to be killed by a robber because they view the officer as imminent danger (Margarita, 1980). As humans have evolved, there have been different notions created on the consequences of doing certain activities or actions. While the preceding is important to take into mind, does it always have to be so serious? Any individual who grows up does either childish actions or just simple mistakes. O Connor shows how the formality of this can be taken to an extreme point with the story of Jackie. In First Confession he creates a humorous tone with the utilization of figurative language and characterization. To begin with, First Confession holds a strong message, but it holds it with a touch of humor. With this story being told from a reflective point of view, it really shows the comical sides of the story. Most of us have those stories that as we reflect on them now, can be very funny; the same was for Jackie. Jackie wrote about his first confession, which was probably from a few years back and now he highlights the funny parts of them. For example, the rivalry between Nora, his sister, and him. A rivalry which then seemed very serious for Jackie, was not that serious in reality. As well, his grandmother s arrival was so bad for him then that he even plotted her murder. The humorous side of this story is reflected mainly in his conversation with the priest. • 22. Leo Tolstoy View On Art Leo Tolstoy Theory on art Лев Николаевич Толстой or known in English as Leo Tolstoy, was a famous Russian writer who is also known as one of the greatest authors of all time. Leo Tolstoy was a self confident man and was sure of his rightness. However, this self confidence may have caused him involuntarily, to feel envious. Tolstoy rejected many philosophical views since he was an outspoken sectarian (philosophical or political group or a form of bigotry, intolerance towards those who hold different opinions from themselves). Anything that could not be rationally explained, he did not accept. Tolstoy s theory is that Art begins when a man, with the purpose of communicating to other people a feeling he once experienced, calls it up again within himself and expresses it by certain external signs . In Leo Tolstoy s theory, he tries to explain that just because art may look beautiful, it doesn t mean that it holds any valuable lessons. Of course, there are many counter arguments to this theory but I will try to look at this in a different perspective. Most of the people of the upper classes (popes and clerics) in Tolstoy s time did not in fact believe in anything. Because the way the church taught everyone caused these people to stop believing, this may have influenced Tolstoy s Theory. I ve learned that the book is more sociological, which means that it focused on our human society of racial issues and also emphasizes the economy and the divide between the wealthy residents of one city versus the more working class denizens of another are all subjects that are given an in depth examination. This is more of the main or focal point of the whole book and in not so much in the movie. Bissinger writes a novel called Friday Night Lights, about a year in 1988 where High School players prepare and play on the High School team, and what an impact they have on a small city in Texas. The novel begins with preseason football in the heat of a Texas summer. The players and coaches practice over 4 hours a day in 100 degree weather. • 29. Depersonalization Disorder After gathering information about Caleb from his homeroom teacher and another session with his mother, I considered two more disorders. Caleb s mother mentioned that Caleb s father physically and verbally abused her and Caleb witnessed the abuse several times. This immediately made me think of Trauma and Stressor Related Disorders. I also considered Dissociative Disorders, although Dissociative Disorders are not labeled as a Trauma and Stressor Related Disorders in the DSM 5, they are triggered by traumatic events. The primary disorder I thought of after my second session with Caleb s mother was Depersonalization/ Derealization Disorder; Caleb may have had depersonalization experiences, evident by his emotional numbness and his seemingly absent ... I am not sure whether to report schizophreniform Disorder or Schizophrenia because it is not clear how long Caleb has displayed negative symptoms and symptoms of catatonia. It is also unclear whether his behavior is due to the physiological effects of a substance, which is important to consider since he was caught drinking alcohol. However, Schizophreniform Disorder and Schizophrenia is still worth considering due to the possibility that Caleb may have had a hallucination and was rather obsessed with his fantasies during his daycare years, as mentioned in the first session. Caleb also may have another symptom of catatonia, making a total of three symptoms of catatonia, which is the minimum requirement. Caleb exhibited negativism by not reporting or reacting to bullying behavior targeted at him; Caleb simply ignores his peers when they tease him, rather than respond or report them. Moreover, there is still reason to consider Autism Spectrum Disorder, based on his mother s and homeroom teacher s report. During the second session, Caleb s mother admitted that her sister has severe autism, indicating that there may be a genetic link to Caleb s eccentric behavior. Furthermore, his teacher reported that Caleb is academically average, and has exceptional written vocabulary skills, which eliminates the possibility of Caleb s behavior ... Examples Of Racism In The Bluest Eye Taelor Doucet Mrs. Beal ENG4U 9 November 2015 The Hurt of Internalized Racism Racist ideology is institutionalized when how people s interactions reflects on an understanding that they share the same beliefs. However, in The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison, the topic of racism is approached in a very unique way. The characters within the novel are subjected to internalizing a set of beliefs that are extremely fragmented. In accepting white standards of beauty, the community compromises their children s upbringing, their economic means, and social standings. Proving furthermore that the novel has more to do with these factors than actual ethnicity at all. In The Bluest Eye, characters experience a variety of oppressive , that give rise to the never ending cycle of victimization in both the families and neighborhood. Throughout the novel, the black community accepts white beauty ideals, for example, judging Maureen s light skin to be highly attractive in comparison to Pecola s darker features. Racism is also apparent in other indirect ways. There is a general sense of worthlessness that certain colored characters subconsciously integrate into their daily lives, even without the constant reminder of their apparent ugliness . For example, the Breedloves did not live in a storefront because they were having temporary difficulty adjusting to the cutbacks at the plant. They lived there because they were poor and black, and they stayed there because they believed they were ugly. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Most initiatives were privately ran which meant big variation from city to city and even school to school. Legal complexities and a lack of support from the Board of Education made it nearly impossible to create a sustainable program. It was not until the agriculture industry realized that public schools served as a market for surplus foods that school lunch programs gained momentum on a national scale. Despite the surpluses later being prioritized for the war efforts during world war II, it was obvious that school lunch programs were popular. It was just a constant challenge on how to keep them funded. Finally, two bills were introduced to secure permanent funding. • 37. Comparing Kripke s Naming And Necessity In Naming and Necessity , Philosopher Saul Kripke believes that there are some contingent truths that can be known a priori, or independent of experience. It is standard to believe that a priori truths coincide with necessary truths rather than with contingent. I will argue in agreeance with Kripke. There are cases in which contingent a priori truths exist. A priori knowledge is knowledge gained independent of experience. It is the knowledge that can be gained from learning the language, but without actual experience or need to consult the external world. For example, someone who knows that All bachelors are unmarried men does not need to experience being unmarried to defend this statement. By having knowledge of the language, one knows that, by definition, a bachelor is an unmarried man. By contrast, a posteriori propositions can only be known through experience of the external world. If I say that It is windy outside , then in order to understand this proposition I must have experience of the weather. A necessary truth is a truth that could not be false, where a contingent truth is one that could be false. If you could alter the universe in any possible way, the necessary truths will not change compared to the contingent truths. The typical way ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But what many don t know is between 1558 1603, the Elizabethan Era, the same social class system was already being used. The only difference was that they were more in depth. Although the social class system is still in place today during the Elizabethan era it was used to place people in categories based on their financial state, family history, and beliefs. The social classes of the Elizabethan era were divided into three broad categories and subdivided into smaller specified groups. The broader categories became known as estates ( Elizabethan Era ). There was the first, second and third estate. The first estate consisted of clergy ( Social Order 58). Although they were all Roman Catholic clergy these people were broken up into smaller sections. The smaller sections divided the ordained from the unordained (Social Status and Community ). The Ordained were known as seculars an example of someone who would fall under this division was the pope. The second estate, was of the nobility.
