Borge s Use of Berkeley s Idealism Essay
Borge s Use of Berkeley s Idealism
Jorge Luis Borges drew upon a number of philosophical and intellectual models in his writing,
one of which is George Berkeley s subjective idealism. In Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius, Borges
paints a picture of a perfect reality governed by Berkeley s idea that matter only exists in perception,
and in The Circular Ruins, he presents a man who creates a boy who cannot exist independent of
his perception. However, by employing Berkeley s logic in these stories, Borges is in fact denying
Berkeley s ultimate purpose: the justification of the existence of God.
In almost all of his work, Berkeley s fundamental goal is to logically disprove any thinking that
presumes the non existence of God (Muehlmann ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We may even assert that the existence of God is far more evidently perceived than the existence of
men; because the effects of Nature are infinitely more numerous and considerable, than those
ascribed to human agents. (Principles 109)
Borges uses the same theory and logic in his writing, but he aims instead to pick apart this
assumption of God.
The philosophy of Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius is described by one critic as a kind of ultra
Berkeleyan idealism according to which the only realities are mental perceptions (Dunham 36). On
Tlön, there is no concept of space or matter and, there are no nouns in their languages, only verbs
and adjectives. In effect, Borges uses subjective idealism to break down reality. Borges writes: The
nations of that planet are congenitally idealist. Their language, with its derivatives religion,
literature, and metaphysics presupposes idealism (Borges 23).
A system of geometry on Tlön rejects the principle of parallelism, and states that, as man moves
about, he alters the forms which surround him (Borges 28). This is perhaps an answer to a question
Philonous poses to Hylas:
Since all sensible qualities, as size, figure, colour, etc. that is, our ideas are continually changing
upon every alteration in the distance, medium, or instruments of sensation; how can any determinate

Examples Of Supernatural In Jane Eyre
In Jane Eyre, the theme of the Supernatural is used quite often. It is a rather interesting theme
when reading; it grabs your attention and pulls you in. No one can resist a good supernatural
theme, examples of some rather famous novels and/or films are: Star Wars, Star Trek, Harry
Potter, Divergent, etc. Shaking my hair from my eyes, I lifted my head and tried to look boldly
round the dark room: at this moment a light gleamed on the wall. Was it, I asked myself, a ray
from the moon penetrating some aperture in the blind? No; moonlight was still, and this stirred;
while I gazed, it glided up to the ceiling and quivered over my head. I can now conjecture readily
that this streak of light was, in all likelihood, a gleam from a lantern, carried by someone across the

and so are sympathies; and so are signs; and the three combined make one mystery to which
humanity has not yet found the key. I never laughed at presentiments in my life, because I have had
strange ones of my own. Sympathies, I believe, exist (for instance, between far distant, long absent,
wholly estranged relatives asserting, notwithstanding their alienation, the unity of the source to
which each traces his origin) whose workings baffle mortal comprehension. And signs, for aught
we know, may be but the sympathies of Nature with man. (Charlotte Bronte, Jane Eyre, Chapter 21,
pg. 222) Foreshadowing s an odd thing too, as is symbolism, also are little hints from the author
about supernatural tricks she ll use later to bring the protagonists back together when they re dozens
of miles apart. Erm, what s that called? Yeah, a deux ex machina. This passage is noteworthy
because it s one of the only moments that Jane actually claims to the reader that she believes in
some kind of supernatural foreknowledge and, a psychic connection between people. Still, Jane
proposes that these seemingly supernatural connections may have natural explanations that we just
aren t aware

Performance Practice of Baroque Vocal Technique Essay
Performance Practice of Baroque Vocal Technique
When approaching a performance, accomplished musicians often consider the historical context
from which a piece originates. They most often think of such considerations in the application of
that context as it pertains to early music that is, the Baroque era or earlier. For any era, such
historical considerations are called performance practice, and may include the use of vibrato,
ornamentation, dynamic levels, tempi, instrumental timbres, performance setting, and balance.
Vibrato and ornamentation are two important areas of consideration that vocalists must explore
when aiming to give an authentically Baroque performance.
Ideal Baroque Vocal Technique
: The Assumed Ideas ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In The Interpretation of Music, Thurston Dart writes: it is very unlikely that any vibrato was used
in the ensemble singing of earlier times; the few theorists who mention it condemn it (51). In light
of the intricate counterpoint employed by Renaissance and late medieval composers, it is natural
that clear intonation would have been vital to the clarity of their multi voiced compositions.
David Wulstan suggests that in singing the decorated Baroque songs, singers surely had to
provide contrast between trilled and untrilled notes: Baroque singers could hardly have sung in
such a way that trills were indistinguishable from the surrounding gelatinous wobble (179).
Singers today, in an effort to project their voices in huge performance venues have to use their
voice in way that produces, in most cases, a large vibrato. Large vibratos can make it difficult, at
times, to hear a distinct pitch, and therefore trills (alternating quickly between two adjacent
pitches) are also difficult to hear. Thus, it is easy to idealize a pure vocal quality so that there is a
clear contrast between trilled and untrilled notes. Contrast is, after all, one defining characteristic of
Baroque era musicГѓ thus, the amateur assumption has a reasonable basis.
In regards to the decoration of Baroque music, amateurs often think that Baroque music is
extremely ornamented. This practice is a more recently acceptable practice: scholar Ronald

U.s. Foreign Policy Policies
The U.S. foreign policy has always been linked to the domestic policy since the U.S. never feared of
expanding its national interests over the national boarders. Isolation for the U.S. usually implied
slow economic growth and the large number of destructive conflicts within, while impudent foreign
policy always guaranteed an abrupt economic growth for the U.S. economy. After the U.S.
intervened in the WWI and the WWII, the U.S. economy witnessed a tremendous economic growth,
nearly elimination of the unemployment, rapid urbanization and overall growth of the standards of
living across the country. Decisive foreign policyhas always been providing the U.S. economy with
the sustainable and rapid economic growth, unlike the policy aimed at isolation of the U.S.
According to Kaufman and Joyce (2010), preoccupation with the domestic issues never resulted in
the long term economic growth for the U.S. Isolationist policies impeded the U.S. territorial
expansion in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries (Kaufman Joyce 71). While some presidents
indeed preferred isolationism like FDR during his first tenures as the U.S. President, he then
abolished isolationist policies after the 1941 Pearl Harbor disaster. The U.S. witnessed that
isolationist policies for the U.S. turned out to be extremely unproductive and even dangerous.
Militarist Japan brutally attacked the U.S. fleet on Hawaii during the WWII, totally ignoring the
U.S. neutral isolationist status in 1941. FDR had to confess

Essay On The Making Of Malcolm Turn Bull
We ve all heard the tired argument regurgitated by the ostentatious social commentator or the
disillusioned anarchist uncle; politicians are selfish individuals who brilliantly spin webs of deceit
only to create power for themselves and serve their own egos. And so it would seem, that Malcolm
Turnbull an undeniably professional politician who rose to prime ministership undemocratically
perhaps embodies these aforementioned qualities more than most.
This apparently, isn t the case, at least according to his wife, daughter and two mates (and a less
friendly journo, Malcolm Farr) when interviewed on Australian Story; Auntie s foremost
programme where the most hard done by emoters like to, well, emote.
Aired on the 21st of September last year, the half an hour documentary entitled The Making of
Malcolm comprises of interviews telling the story of our prime minister s childhood and life before
politics filmed in 09. This is merged with more recent interviews, exploring Turnbull s political
career.
There s an extreme emphasis on personal recollection and anecdotes of past events. This makes for
a very personal production; one where truth takes a back seat behind the spectacular and the
endearing. It also has the convenient side effect of being less disturbed by those pesky things the ...

Malcolm the politician (how boring), it s about Malcolm the man. This, of course means that the
extremely small number of teachers that do indeed read mETAphor must instead teach the
polemical characteristics of this film, rather than the factual. The unique format of The Making of

Life and Suffering in the Trenches Essay
World War I, also known as the Great War, endured from the summer of 1914 until the late fall of
1918. The war was fought between the Allies, which consisted mainly of the United Kingdom,
France, and the Russian Empire, and the Central Powers, which consisted mainly of the German
Empire, the Ottoman Empire, the Austro Hungarian Empire, and the Kingdom of Bulgaria
(Alliances Entente and Central Powers). In total, it is estimated that twelve million civilians and
nine million combatants died during this horrific and devastating war (DeGroot 1). When the war
originated in 1914, many people thought that it would be a war of movement that would rapidly be
settled. However, that changed when the Germans, who were trying to reach and... Show more

Soldiers followed a basic routine on normal days. The day began with the stand to in which
soldiers would wake up an hour before dawn and stand on the firing step, rifles in hand, to look
out for a predawn attack by the enemy (Feature Articles Life in the Trenches). Each trench
possessed a firing step, which was placed two to three feet from the trench floor to allow soldiers
to peer over the trench and spot the enemy (Fire Step). Stand to, which is short for stand for
arms, occurred because it was believed that just before dawn, when it was still dark, was the best
time to mount an attack (Ellis 38). Both sides practiced this morning ritual. After stand to and the
morning hate, when both sides would relieve the tension of the morning by firing their machine
guns in the air, an unofficial truce was called by the enemies for about an hour as they prepared
and ate breakfast (Ellis 38). After breakfast, rifles were inspected and daily chores were appointed
to the soldiers (Feature Article Life in the Trenches). Some chores included mending the trench by
refilling sandbags, repairing duckboards on the floor, and pumping water or mud out of the trench
after heavy rain falls (Feature Article Life in the Trenches). After lunch, more chores of the such
were completed throughout the day. At dusk, stand to was again repeated to guard against a

Cataclysmic Events Causing Mass Extinction
Over 250 million years ago, Earth was struck with an asteroid that wiped out 95% of all species.
This devastating event was followed by another natural disaster when, 50 million years later, a
volcanic eruption caused massive lava floods. The floods triggered the breakup of Pangea, the
original continent. This volcanic eruption created extreme global warming and the extinctionof 70%
of marine life. These two examples are not the only times Earthhas experienced mass extinction. An
extinction may be viewed as a natural part of evolution that occurs when a large proportion of a
particular species completely dies off and ceases to exist. Extinctions are considered to be mass
extinctions if the number of species becoming extinct is significantly larger than the normal, natural
rate of extinction. These mass extinctions disrupt the entire global community.
Cataclysmic events causing mass extinctions have occurred five times throughout history, each
being caused by a sudden natural phenomenon such as an asteroid or volcano. We are currently in
the midst of a sixth mass extinction, however this time it is not due to asteroids or volcanic
eruptions. This mass extinction has been caused by a much more ... Show more content on

that at this current rate of extinction, three quarters of species could completely disappear from the
face of the Earth within the next several hundred years. (Drake 4). This sixth mass extinction could

African American Culture Reflection
The topic that was chosen for the educational class was African American Heritage and Nutrition.
Speaking for the group, none of us had ever had experience with teaching a lesson, needless to
say, without the effort of each person, creating the lesson form my view would have been a lot
more difficult alone than without the group. My Experience was more positive, than Negative, but
one of the negatives was keeping up with the group member s schedules. Scheduling out a time to
meet and communicate about ideas and compiling the information of the project was difficult, but
we managed by sending group messages and utilizing the file share folder provided on blackboard.

The knowledge about Africa can be very helpful in such cases where as a dietitian, we may have
a patient of African descent asking for guidance on how to use current meals and make them
healthier. It is important to also have some knowledge prior to working with patients, especially
depending on the area or region you live in, because it can make it easier to determine how to
approach any future clients. As part of our lesson, we included a pre, and post test to assess the
class knowledge about Africa. We had the class take the pre test before starting our presentation.
Once our presentation was complete, we handed out the post test with the same questions as the
pre test, but in a different order. Once we had collected the tests, we calculated the mean scores
of both, pre and post, and compared them in order to assess what the classes knowledge before,
and after we presented the material. The scores also help to prove how transparent and effective
our group was at presenting the material. The mean score was 5.4 for the pre test, and 9.15 for
the post test. On average, most people got about 6 out of 10 pre test questions right and for the
post test most got 9 out of the 10 questions right. Based on these results, the student did increase in
their knowledge from about a 60% to 90% and

Data is collected to learn the effectiveness of a particular tool in preventing defects or to look into
the cause of a particular defect (Burrill, Ledolter, p.381). Data removes the trepidation and
uncertainty of an unknown element. One reason for collecting data is to gain an understanding of

However, the nature of this knowledge varies and reflects your study objectives. Some study
objectives seek to make standardized and systematic comparisons, others seek to study a
phenomenon or situation in detail. These different intentions require different approaches and
methods, which are typically categorized as either quantitative or qualitative. I. Quantitative
Research
Quantitative research provides quantified answers to research problems and is commonly associated
with positivistic (objectively measurable), experimental research (Pope, Mays, 1995). Quantitative
research typically explores specific and clearly defined questions that examine the relationship
between two events, or occurrences, where the second event is a consequence of the first event, e.g.
What impact did the program have on children s school performance? To test the causality or link
between the program and children s school performance, quantitative researchers will seek to
maintain a level of control of the different variables that may influence the relationship between
events and recruit respondents randomly.
Quantitative approaches address the what of the program. They use a systematic standardized
approach and employ methods such as surveys (Hawe, Degeling, Hall, 1990) and ask questions
such as What activities did the program run? or

Euthyphro Dialogue Analysis
In the dialogue Euthyphro, Plato introduces the reader to the interlocutor Euthyphro, a dogmatically
religious man who claimed to have great knowledge of the gods. Euthyphro used his understanding
of pious and impious as an excuse to indict his father on murder charges. Socrates was interested in
Euthyphro s unshakable religious convictions but by using the Socratic method the reader slowly
learns that Euthyphrohas not truly delved into himself and examined his strong held beliefs. Plato
holds Euthyphro up to the reader as an example and a warning, that even if one believes they are
living a righteous life, if they never stop and look within themselves and self examine their beliefs

Socrates explained that the gods never explicitly stated what was right and wrong. Even when
they claimed to comment on just acts, they simple defined what they did as just because they
believed it was so. Socrates tried to explain to Euthyphro that discussing what the gods found to
be just or virtuous was a good start on the journey of self discovery but it wasn t the end of it.
Euthyphro had to continue on this journey and look within himself to seek and find the answers
for himself. By taking the time to work on himself internally and seek the answers to these
questions and not just rely on what gods say to be true, he would be on the path to living a life of

Chris Owings Speakout Analysis
Outside of rostering Judge, Harper, Trout, and Cano, there are plenty of cheaper, under the radar
options that have been maintaining consistency. Here are a few standouts. Chris Owings:
Owings is truly a jack of all trades. Wherever the DBacks need him, he is there, whether he plays
outfield, shortstop or second base, although his primary role is shortstop. Drafted by the
Diamondbacks in 2009 out of high school. He made his major league debut in Sept of 2013. He
spent sometime prowling around the Diamondbacks system but it looks like he is here to stay.
In 28 games, Owings is batting .311 with 21 RBI s and 5 HR. His salary has gone up in both DK
and Fanduel, he is currently sitting at $4200. Scoring in double digit fantasy points most nights, he
is well worth the roster spot. Aaron Altherr: The 26 year old outfielder for the Phillies is fantasy

similarities between he and Altherr keep coming. Through the 2017 season, Hernandez has not
put up one goose egg in the point column in fantasy. Roster him if you know what is good for
you. Marwin Gonzalez: The switch hitting 1st baseman for the Astros has been the teams
hottest hitter. The multi talented athlete has played at every position for the Astros except
pitcher and catcher. To say he is valuable to the Astros would be an understatement. In 24 games,
Gonzalez is batting .266, with 21 RBI s and 9 HR s. Many critics are wondering if he can
possibly stay this hot for the remainder of the season, but why not ride out the hot streak while
you can. Marwin is only $3000 on Fanduel and $3300 on DK. The 1st base position has a lot of

The Misconceptions Of Children
Rational When preschool age children learning about measurement in mathematics, there are three
misconceptions are commonly found, including struggles in recognising the difference between
volume and capacity, as well as difference between weight and mass, and the lack of understanding
in concept of conservation in measurement, because children have not complete their cognitive
development to process those abstract concepts (MacDonald Rafferty, 2015; Piaget, 1969). It is
important to clarify those misconceptions to children, so they can develop a complete
understanding about measurement, for measurement is an essential daily life skill (e.g. use
measurement to bake a cake or check the time) (Knaus, 2013; MacDonald Rafferty, 2015).

Dr. Boris Bizumic s The Republic Of Liberia
The Republic of Liberia was founded in 1847 by the descendants of former slaves in search of the
freedoms and liberties unobtainable in the United States. Their relationship with the established
indigenous population was contentious from the start. The settlers colonized their new home by
dominating economic and political control over the indigenous for 133 years. Some historians
perceive that it was these new settlers, exhibiting ethnocentric tendencies, that ultimately led to a
failed republic and two bloody civil wars. These new settlers from the Americas reached the African
west coast, created a society entrenched in classism, social segregation, and enslavement that
resulted in Liberiabecoming one of the poorest countries in the world.... Show more content on

They clearly made Christianity an entitlement for the privileged Liberian while they disregarded
traditional beliefs and practices of the indigenous ethnic groups. Dr. Bizumic affirms that having a

ethnic groups adopt world religions, such as Christianity, they may adapt them to fit their own
ethnic groups (Bizumic, B. (2015), p. 6). Sociologist William G. Sumner was the first to define the
term ethnocentrism. He relates ethnocentrism as tribal or ethnic group egocentrism: view of things

Moral Of Antigone
The play begins as Antigone and her sister Ismene speak of the death of their brothers Polyneices
and Eteocles. However, it is important to note that what events precluded this scene, which was
sparked by Eteocles s taking reign of the Thebes after Oedipus had died. It ultimately caused
Polyneices to wage a battle against his former city and drove the two brothers to kill one another
(Sophocles8). Thus, leaving Creonwho was both of brother s uncle in control of the city of Thebes.
Antigoneand Ismene discuss the proclamation newly put forth by Creon which was due to the fact
that Polyneices committed treason against Thebes he would not be granted a burial, thus foregoing
the Unwritten Law protecting the rights of the dead (Sophocles 9). It was this decree that provoked
Antigone to opposed Creon as she decides to bury Polyneices herself and she attempts to recruit
Ismene to help her with this action, however, Ismene tried to persuade Antigone not to go through
with the burial.
As the play progresses it comes to Creon s attention by one of the guards that Polynieces body has

How Did Sibelius Become Nationalist
Jean Sibelius is often recognised as one of Finland s greatest composers, who helped to develop a
national identity for Finland during the late 19th century in its struggle for independence from
Russia. There are many aspects of Sibelius biography and works that can aid in the justification of
the label nationalist and demonstrate how this identification shaped the reception of his career.
Many aspects of his biography such as his early education, his musical education in Vienna and
Berlin and his engagement and marriage to Aino Jarnefelt, whose family were Finnish patriots,
helped Sibelius to find his own nationalist temperament and can be thought to justify the label
nationalist. Finding inspiration from the Finnish national epic, the... Show more content on

The decision to compose a monumental work based on a story from the Kalevala appears to be
charged with political implications and his need to create Finnish art music at this time in his life.
Sibelius wrote I m working now on a new symphony, completely in the Finnish spirit...It is my
conviction that a Finnish man shall feel and think Finnish. Kullervo s multi movement structure
features soprano, baritone, male voice choir and an orchestra, with all of its five movement unified
by the themes presented. The movements which feature the voices highlights his musical attention
to the rhythm of the Finnish language and created a basis for a new vocal style arising out of the
nature of the Finnish language. However, Sibelius not only based his composition on the story in
the national Finnish epic but also included elements of folk music in his piece, which seems to
justify the label of a nationalist composer. In the second movement of Kullervo, Sibelius combines
ideas and theme rhythmically and melodically in the manner of rune singers and folk idioms (see
example 1). Through this variation of ideas, the intensity of the movement rises and becomes
extremely fierce. He also uses the time signature 5/4 in the third movement, which although no
explicably Finnish, is known to frequent and characterise some Finnish music. The

policy since 1972 that the 1960 U.S. Japan Security Treaty covers the islets, because Article 5 of
the treaty stipulates that the United States is bound to protect the territories under the
Administration of Japan and Japan administers the Senkakus/Diaoyu Islands (Manyin 2013). Due
to this treaty, the United States must provide security for Japan in return for the right to station
U.S. troops on Japanese territory. While the original stance of the U.S. was to take no stance on
sovereignty despite its obligations to defend Japan, its stance has recently shifted to pro Japan.
Backing Japan s increased militarization, U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is now beginning
to discuss with Japan ways to update their security pact, may help assuage concern in Tokyo that
Washington will favor China as its economic power grows (Kelly 2014). As a response to the
territorial security issue between China and Japan, the U.S. chose to side with Japan. A liberal
thinker would argue that U.S. support for Japan is founded in the desire for cooperation. Rather
than the realist argument of international interactions being what is called a Prisoners Dilemma,
which inevitably produces a suboptimal outcome due to lack of trust, the Stag Hunt approach is
used. Kenneth A. Oye, in his book World Politics, defined the single play stag hunt as the
temptation to defect to protect against the defection of others which is then balanced by the strong
universal preference for stag

Campus Molds Advantages And Disadvantages
Moving in as a freshman is great. You are excited, everyone helps you move in, and it goes by
fast. Moving out after freshman year is another story. The move out process is tiring, no one helps
you, and it takes forever. The young men who started Campus Crates felt these same feelings for
move in and move out of college. Their solution to the problem was creating a moving and storage
company that caters to college students. Campus Crates was started by two students both named
Ryan after their freshman year of college at Baylor University. The company became an LLC in
2016 and started moving students that summer (Leland, 2016). Campus Crates goal is to make
the lives of parents and students easier by relieving the inconvenience and expense of moving to
and from college. Campus Crates is an on demand storage service that only requires you to
register, pay, schedule a time for boxes to be dropped off, and then pack the boxes at your own
convenience. Then they will pick up your belongings, store it in a secure facility, and then return
your belongings to your new residence (Mycampuscrates.com, 2017). Although Campus Crates was
established in 2016, their concept has proven to be successful.
Strengths
There are no other companies near the Baylor area that offer what Campus Crates offers. This fact
allows Campus Crates to have a competitive advantage over other storage companies. Campus
Crates is the only company that delivers packing supplies, picks up packed boxes, stores boxes

Management Models Of Management Model
Management is the activity of getting things done with the aid of people and other resources
(Boddy, 1998). Today, organizations around the globe rely heavily on management to ensure
effective and efficient business. A wide variety of management models exist in order to
accommodate different business needs. This essay will briefly discuss various managementmodels,
but will mainly focus on the Competing Values Framework (CVF) and current examples
demonstrating two models within the CVF. A simple search in Google or a quick browse through
the library proves that vast models of management exist. Joan Magretta, author of What
Management Is, describes models as theories that help managers to see patterns, separate what

135). The final model within the CVF is internal process. This model is similar to the rational goals
model, but its main focus is on consolidation and continuity within the company (Boddy, 1998).
Max Weber played a large role in the development of bureaucratic management within this model.
Bureaucratic administration allows businesses to thrive in terms of precision, continuity, unity,
and the reduction of material and personal costs, according to Weber (Weber, 1978). Though
each of these models is crucial to the CVF, the remainder of this essay will focus on comparing
and contrasting only the open systems model and internal process model. Internal process and
open system models are located diagonally from each other on the CVF diagram. That being said,
many differences exist between the two models; however, the basic management goal is similar.
These two models will be analyzed based on the framework shown in diagram B. Contemporary
examples, mainly Haier Power and Deloitte, but also Google and McDonalds, will exemplify each
model. It is important to note that many companies don t strictly follow one model. Companies
may follow certain characteristics of one model and other characteristics of another model. Every
company, regardless the model of management followed, expects management to add value to the
company. This is illustrated through financial statements. The 2013 financial statements for

Imprisonment and Social Control Essay
Imprisonment is one of the primary ways in which social control may be achieved; the Sage
Dictionary of Criminology defines social control as a concept used to describe all the ways in which
conformity may be achieved. Throughout time imprisonment and its ideas around social control
have varied. Imprisonment has not always been used for punishment, nor has it always thought
about the prisoners themselves. However when looking at imprisonment it is important to consider
the new penology. Therefore, it needs to be clear what the new penology is. The new penology is
said, not to be about punishing individuals or about rehabilitating them, but about identifying and
managing unruly groups in society. It is concerned with the managerial... Show more content on

Throughout the years, the use of imprisonment has varied, along with its influences of society. It is
thought that although prisons have been around since the thirteenth century, prisons as we know
them now to be have only been around for the last three centuries. The first uses of prisons were
not seen as a form of punishment instead they were used as a way of making people do something.
People would be held in prison until they paid their debts, or awaiting trial and then leading up to
their sentence. McGowen (1995) suggests that from the early 1700s bridewells a house of
correction have existed, however at that time being used merely for vagrants and drunks. At the
end of the sixteenth century there was a shift in punishment to imprisonment, along with this came
a new, more humane idea of reform. Criminals would spend their days of prison carrying out hard
labour. However after the American Revolution, imprisonment took a step back and there was
another change. There was mass overcrowding within the prison service and although the death
penalty was still being used it was a symbol of the power of the state. Therefore, an everyday way
of dealing with offenders would be transportation to the colonies, being either Australia or America.
It was with the work of Beccaria and Bentham that saw a change in imprisonment. Jeremy Bentham
(1748 1832) insisted crime prevention was the only way

Children s journeys throughout education should be personal, and this is what the Montessori
approach achieves. From visiting a Montessori setting, the practitioners accomplished this as
they allowed the children to play individually Montessori thought working alone encouraged
children to become independent learners (M. Beaver, J. Brewster et all, CACHE Level 3
Childcare and Education). It is also important that they do plan times for the children to
socialize and work together as this will build their Social and Emotional development. By
providing individual learning journey books for each child, means that the child s key worker
can add notes and pictures to show to their family what they do at nursery, however these are

The Goal By Eliyahu M. Veldt
The Goal, a fictional novel written by Eliyahu M. Goldratt, introduces the reader to a plant manager
of a production plant within the UniCo Manufacturing group, Alex Rogo, who is experiencing
consistent problems in meeting targeted production levels. Faced with an ultimatum, ta turn his
plant profitable in three months, Rogo seeks guidance from a distant acquaintance of his, Jonah, an
old physics professor. This consultancy introduces concepts that will constitute cornerstones of
Rogo s strategy to turn the plant around. These concepts are also applied successfully by Rogo in
the alternative story line of his marital life. When reaching out to Jonah, Rogo is to some extent
perplexed of why the plant is not performing as expected, he is instructed to define the true goal of
the firm. After contemplation, Rogo managed, with help of one of his accountants, to expand the
ultimate goal to make money into essentially three categories: to increase net profit, while
simultaneously increasing return of investment, while simultaneously increasing cash flow . The
measures, as outlined by Jonah, of this overarching goal were; Throughput, Inventory and
Operational Expense. Throughput refers to the rate at which the system generates cash from sales,
Inventory is defined as the total money invested in purchasing things intended to sell, whereas
Operational Expense is the cost associated with turning inventory into throughput. These
measurements as defined in the Goal differ in

of the rest of the economy as opposed to real productive behavior. This plan would result in an all

reason is that higher taxrates on the highest earners can generate revenue to pay for new programs,

How Successful Was The Operation Mincemeat
In the Second World War, a fierce battle was raging in North Africa between the British military
and the German Africa Corps (Secrets of WWII). Only a few years later due to huge losses, the
Germans would be defeated in North Africa by the Allies, who then faced a serious dilemma as to
what to do next in the war. The British wanted to move the fight to the Mediterranean, the
Americans, however were interested in moving the focus on France. Hitler and his commanders, on
the other hand, were convinced that the Allies would certainly enter through Sicily. But the Allies,
and especially the British intelligence, wanted to throw Hitler off by making him think that the
Allies would strike anywhere but Sicily? This goal gave rise to Operation Mincemeat, which was

such as Mincemeat. Because of the amount of outrage that was being expressed by the public
after the Pearl Harbor attacks and the massive war casualties in Europe that governments of the
warring countries were under heavy pressure. Another factor that contributed to the success of the
operation was the careful execution of the plan by the British intelligence. The other important
factor was that the Allies had been fighting the Germans for almost 3 years in Europe, Africa and
elsewhere so they had begun to understand their enemy making it easier to defeat them. The
amount of money spent on the war and soldiers lost was unbearable for people who were dragged
into the war and the only chance of Ally nations surviving and winning was to take on the Germans

In the beginning of the novel, Huck Finn has started to accept civilization and he also showed
traits of immaturity, uncivilized, and rough. Pap always said it warn t no harm to borrow things
if you was meaning to pay them back some time; but the widow said it warn t anything but a soft
name for stealing, and no decent body would do it. Jim said he reckoned the widow was partly
right and pap was partly right; so the best way would be for us to pick out two or three things
from the list and say we wouldn t borrow them any more then he reckoned it wouldn t be no
harm to borrow the others (Twain 72). This Insist that Huck Finn has found a middle ground of
Pap s moral and the more sensible moral. Huck finn came up with an idea to surrender an item
for the sake of borrowing another item. Dah you goes, de ole true Huck; de on y white genlman

immature, but as the book continues Huck grew his morality. Huck Finn came across

seemingly innocent, right winged, news channel, with the slogan We Report. You Decide.
However, as time moved on from the first airing of the news channel, it was as if Fox had

how Fox News, and perhaps other popular media news outlets, have begun to actively misinform

short poem, it had a lot of imagery. He clasps the crag with crooked hands a good use of imagery
in this poem. It is also a metaphor because Tennyson wrote it as if the eagle had hands like a
human. It explained about how the eagle lives in its natural habitat. The Eagle had a rhymescheme
of (a, a, a) which is a triple rhyme, where the stanzas have three lines and they all rhyme. The
poem also contains alliteration and simile. And like a thunderbolt he falls is a simile that was
used that could be used to describe the eagle falling. In all cases we would think Tennyson meant
the eagle was falling fast like a thunderbolt but he wasn t. Although the unwary reader might
associate the swift, downward flight of the eagle with a lightning bolt, Tennyson does not use this
term (Jackson 26). He was wording it as the sound of the rock landing a thunderbolt (Jackson 26).
The poem uses alliteration such as He

Essay On The Red Queen
Name Professor s name Course Date, Film Paper: The Red Queen
The Red Queen is a documentary made by the Discovery channel. It tells about a study of ancient
remnants of the Maya woman. She was buried honorably, like an important member of the ruling
dynasty. Researchers did not ascertain the woman s identity, but provided enough evidences to
suggest she was Tzakbu Ajaw, the wife of Pakal II, one of the greatest Maya rulers, who headed
the government of Palenque. The movie also provided insights in the women s role in ancient
Maya life.
The movie portrays the woman as a noble person. Her tomb and used mortuary ceremonies were
similar to procedures that were applied to king s bodies. Red Queen was around 50 60 years old
when she died. Woman s teeth showed she had a high quality diet, but it did not save her from
abscesses in the mouth. Red Queen had children, and several pregnancies could be a possible cause
of her osteoporosis. Despite the condition, scientists did ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They showed the society had strict gender roles. Women were its important part, but they often
played only second roles as mothers and wives of rulers, who give them male successors. Their
positions were not limited by these duties; for example, Maya believed women can contact with
ancestors, when they sacrifice their blood. They also admitted females intelligence and ability
to make decisions, if they existed. Women were not prohibited from the throne, but Maya did
not like such derogation from traditions and chose them as rulers only it was the only way to
maintain the kingdom. So they often stayed in charge as grey cardinals . This role was chosen
by Sak K uk , the mother of Pakal II and one of the potential identities of the Red Queen. She
could not come into throne, so she named her son for this post, when he was 12 years old. Sak K

Information Architectures for Websites
Information Architectures for Websites
Introduction
The common attribute all successful information architectures share is a strategic purpose that is
unified around specific, measurable, customer centric goals. The more precise an information
architectures purpose and objectives, the greater the potential it has to attain a high level of agility
and permanency in customers and users daily routines and lives (Spencer, 1985). Information
architecture is the catalyst that unifies the mission or purpose of a website, serves as the catalyst of
its short and long range goal attainment and also ensures its relevancy over time The intent of this
analysis is to evaluate the discussions and interviews completed with colleagues with regard to
creating series of recommendations that will provide present and future students of the BSITM

Disney and Discrimination
When you wish upon a star, your dreams come true. Disney uses this slogan as well as many

With that in mind, the first step I wish to take, which is also the same topic I wish to end this letter
with, is in the direction of the history behind the Disney Corporation. Disney s history obviously
starts with the big man himself, Walt Disney. Many see Walt Disney as the greatest visionary and
greatest artist of our time; he was a man who believed in the value of fun, and taught us to put clean
pleasure up there with God and our country. (Washington Post)
I am interested in entertaining people, in bringing pleasure, particularly, to others, rather than being

for them today. However, it is now time to turn you away from

Essay on Personal Narrative- Soccer State Championship
Personal Narrative Soccer State Championship
On February 28, 2005, I experienced one of the most exciting events that anyone could ever
experience winning a State Championship. The day my soccer team made history is a day I ll
never forget. However it is not just that day we won the title, but the whole experience of the
preceding season that got us there. From start to finish, my team s 2004 2005 season taught me that
the platitude is true. You can do anything you set your mind to.
From before day one, all our minds were set. This was the year to win a State Championship. I can t
exactly explain it, but right from the start I knew we were going to do it. I was never so sure about
anything in my life and I never doubted it once. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As Christmas break approached, the team faced what was going to be our biggest challenge of
all. Due to his new job, our coach now took the title of assistant and we were given a new head
coach. The coaches were, and are, good friends, but have totally different coaching styles. The
first was laid back and carefree with a great sense of humor, which made him well liked by
everyone he coached. The new coach had a reputation for being arrogant, strict, and having a no
tolerance policy when it comes to joking around. Because of this perspective some girls held of
our new coach, many were upset with the change. After we attended a tournament over the break,
however, the girls realized that they had been wrong about the coach and he was just what we
needed to help us achieve our goal.
Unfortunately we still had tension among players. It even got as far as one player taking the ball
from another on the field in the middle of the game. As the season progressed, this problem
practically solved itself as we bonded at practices, pre game get togethers, and voluntarily spending
time together on weekends. We grew from barely tolerating each other to being such a tight knit
group that even schoolmates noticed.
With the Christmas tournament aside, we entered the post season without a loss. We had a plan for
each playoff game from districts to regional. We never deviated from the plan, keeping our eye on
the target

Diary Of A Madman, Ah Q, And An Unimportant Affair
Lu Xun often makes a point to include the underlying cruelty found in Chinese culture within his
stories. Using characters from Diary of a Madman, Ah Q, and an Unimportant Affair, I will
explain why this topic stood out to me the most. In Diary of a Madman, the main character is a
madman who writes about his delusions and lives with his older brother. Ah Q follows a man who
is deemed simply as Ah Q. It describes his hardships, which are brought on by the cruelty of the
society, as well as by his own doings. Lastly, in An Unimportant Affair the main character
witnesses an event that changes his outlook on life and the society around him and makes him
contemplate his motives. In Diary of a Madman, the main character has been locked in a room in
his older brother s home. At one point, he claims he hasn t seen the moon in thirty years. He
begins by telling us he fears the neighbor, Old Zhao and his dog, as well as the children of his
village.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The madman sees cruelty all around him, whether it was real or not is up to debate, but
nonetheless, he believes the people of his village is out to get him and take advantage of him. He
fears for himself and the children who have already learned that cruelty and those that have not.
He wants to see the world change and become a better place where everyone is safe and protect
each other from being eaten . Ah Q demonstrates the distaste every culture has for the homeless and
undesirable people in the societies. He is looked down upon and beaten, sometimes just for existing.
The people around him see his as less than human, and equate him to animals, while he himself calls
himself a bug. This alone does not satisfy the malicious need to assault and humiliate him, after,
they continue to beat him until they get

the formula 62/100 1.644853626 ≤ p ≤ 62/100+1.644853626 and calculate it to be

Before Sunrise and Before Sunset
The films Before Sunrise and Before Sunset are said to represent the so called slacker genre.
Slackers are individuals in society who have no direction and no reasonable expectation or realistic
goals in life. This term is mainly used with Generation X ers (people born between 1961 and 1981)
(Casto, What s A Slacker Movie? ). Slacker movies are films that deal with the ordinary day to day
life of these people. In Before Sunrise and Before Sunset the characters sense of wandering and
the feel of aimlessness is what make them qualify as slacker films. It is a different story telling, not
the classical Hollywood story where boy meets girl, falls in love and lives happily ever after but a
real story with perhaps no happy ending or no ending... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The difference is that nine years earlier, they were a twenty something couple both single, which
represented the Generation X, people who grew up in the me generation of the [1970s and]
1980s and now recognize that it was not all that it was cracked up to be (Jochim, Generation X
defies definition ). Nine years later, and in their thirties and both attached to other people, they
realize that they are constrained by the choices they have made and that getting older means no
longer having the chance to realize ones potential through their free choice (Wartenberg, Before
Sunset | Philosophy Now ). At the end of the film Before Sunset CГ©line and Jesse are in her
apartment listening to music and she begins to dance reminding him about his flight. The camera
turns to Jesse where he is seen twirling his wedding ring on his finger. As a viewer the twirling of
the wedding ring is representing the uncertainty about his happiness in his marriage. This situation
is very much relatable to the audience as divorce and the struggle of marriage has become a
common occurrence in today s society. Both the films Before Sunrise and Before Sunset are about
CГ©line s and Jesse s relationship and their mutual interest in conversation. They spend a lot of
time talking about their feelings yet never sincerely act upon them. The films can relate to the

How Does Terry Malloy Change In On The Waterfront
On the Waterfront is set on the docks, a very dismal place. The black and white photography
make the streets, alleyways and small, cramped apartments seem dark and bleak. While the
union bosses live well, the workers seem trapped by their situation, with no way to get out. Terry
Malloy is a low level worker for the union boss, who is not really aware that he is a part of the
corruption. He is asked to lure Joey Doyle to the roof of his apartment building, and believes that

However, for most of the characters, choosing to do what is right can be difficult. Opposing the
union bosses can be dangerous, as evidenced by the deaths of Andy, Joey and Kayo. Therefore,
many of the dock workers prefer to do nothing and remain alive. Other characters, such as Father
Barry and Edie, have a strong internal moral code, and personal considerations do not impact
their decision to do what is right. However, in the case of Terry, his background and current
affiliations present a number of obstacles which prevent him from freely listening to what his
conscience is telling him to do. Terry is owned by Johnny Friendly, and cannot protest against
the jobs that are given to him. This ownership goes back to the days when Terry was a prize
fighter, and was made to take a fall when Friendly bet against him. Charley, Terry s older brother,
is a key member of Friendly s group, and was the one who told Terry he had to take the fall.
When Friendly learns that Terry has been subpoenaed to appear before the crime commission, he
sends Charley to persuade Terry to stop seeing Edie, and take a high paying job with the union.
Terry refuses and Charley pays the price with his life. When Terry goes looking for Friendly to get
revenge, Father Barry tells him: don t fight him like a

Comparing Cinderella And Grimm s Adaptation Of Cinderella
The Grimm version and the Disney version of Cinderella differ regarding the presence of a
godmother s role as well as the discovery of the owner of the glass slipper. To begin, in the
Grimm version, unlike the Perrault version, there is the absence of a fairy godmother. She is
instead replaced by nature which is seen as a female role, therefore the womanly figure manifests
itself. Cinderellaplants the hazel twig her father brings home for her because she wept so much
that her tears fell upon it and watered it (Grimm 2). The twig turned into a beautiful and magical
tree as a result of Cinderella sadness. A symbolic importance is placed on where the tree is
planted. Due to the fact that it lies on top of her mother s grave, it reinforces the idea that her
mother is watching over her and presents herself partially in nature.... Show more content on

In Cinderella s favour, whenever she expressed a wish, the bird would throw down what she had
wished for (Grimm 2). In the Grim story, the bird acts as the young girl s fairy blessed with the
power to grant her most extravagant wishes. For example, when Cinderella cries out, Shake and
quiver, little tree, throw gold and silver down to me (Grimm 3) the bird quickly throws a
dazzling silver and gold dress along with silk shoes. In addition, the birds are omnipresent and
defend Cinderella when she is being threatened. For example, when one of the stepsisters cuts
off her toe, forces her foot into the shoe, swallows the pain and heads off to see the awaited
prince, the pigeons on the hazel tree cry out Rook di goo, rook di goo! There s blood in the shoe.
The shoe is too tight, This bride is not right (Grimm 5). These pigeons therefore intervene in the
favour of their beloved

What Is The Narrative Techniques Used In Northanger Abbey

suggests vicissitude in Catherine s priorities, within her role as Austen s female bildungsroman. In
addition, it will discuss the domestic gothic and real life abuse that prevails in ordinary situations.

Written in third person limited omniscient, and filtered predominantly through Catherine. The
unknown narrator slips effortlessly into free indirect disclosure, which adopts the tone and
inflection of an individual characters voice. This technique allows the narrator to intrude into the
narrative to offer advice, or to foreshadow the characters. However, the narrator frequently breaks
from convention and addresses the reader directly.
Setting and imagery, is important in the novel, the word Abbey , represents connotations of the
gothic itself, which conjures up expectations of horror, and danger, and visions of the uncanny.
Characterisation, through dialogue and free indirect disclosure allows readers to perceive for
themselves the personality and agendas of each individual.
The word choice is rich, and the narrative construction subtle, compassionate, and credible, making
the phrasing natural, realistic, and easily understood through tone and dialogue. My dear Eleanor,
cried Catherine, suppressing her feelings as well as she could, do not be so distressed.

Nabokov Signs And Symbols
Do you ever feel like your trapped in a cage and no one can provide the help you need? Even in
the story Signs and Symbols mostly every character was trapped in life mentally or sane. In Sign
and Symbol a story by Nabokov he uses great metaphors, describing Russian couple s mentally ill
son as a bird or comparing the underground trains as living things. I will argue that Nabokov used
the bird to symbolize the son and the bird flying as his freedom he craves as a semiotic
interpretation. Nabokov used the bird to symbolize the mentally ill son and how the son also felt
like he was a bird. In the description, when the mother was going through the family album, she

  • 2. Borge s Use of Berkeley s Idealism Essay Borge s Use of Berkeley s Idealism Jorge Luis Borges drew upon a number of philosophical and intellectual models in his writing, one of which is George Berkeley s subjective idealism. In TlГ¶n, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius, Borges paints a picture of a perfect reality governed by Berkeley s idea that matter only exists in perception, and in The Circular Ruins, he presents a man who creates a boy who cannot exist independent of his perception. However, by employing Berkeley s logic in these stories, Borges is in fact denying Berkeley s ultimate purpose: the justification of the existence of God. In almost all of his work, Berkeley s fundamental goal is to logically disprove any thinking that presumes the non existence of God (Muehlmann ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We may even assert that the existence of God is far more evidently perceived than the existence of men; because the effects of Nature are infinitely more numerous and considerable, than those ascribed to human agents. (Principles 109) Borges uses the same theory and logic in his writing, but he aims instead to pick apart this assumption of God. The philosophy of TlГ¶n, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius is described by one critic as a kind of ultra Berkeleyan idealism according to which the only realities are mental perceptions (Dunham 36). On TlГ¶n, there is no concept of space or matter and, there are no nouns in their languages, only verbs and adjectives. In effect, Borges uses subjective idealism to break down reality. Borges writes: The nations of that planet are congenitally idealist. Their language, with its derivatives religion, literature, and metaphysics presupposes idealism (Borges 23). A system of geometry on TlГ¶n rejects the principle of parallelism, and states that, as man moves about, he alters the forms which surround him (Borges 28). This is perhaps an answer to a question Philonous poses to Hylas: Since all sensible qualities, as size, figure, colour, etc. that is, our ideas are continually changing upon every alteration in the distance, medium, or instruments of sensation; how can any determinate ... • 3. Examples Of Supernatural In Jane Eyre In Jane Eyre, the theme of the Supernatural is used quite often. It is a rather interesting theme when reading; it grabs your attention and pulls you in. No one can resist a good supernatural theme, examples of some rather famous novels and/or films are: Star Wars, Star Trek, Harry Potter, Divergent, etc. Shaking my hair from my eyes, I lifted my head and tried to look boldly round the dark room: at this moment a light gleamed on the wall. Was it, I asked myself, a ray from the moon penetrating some aperture in the blind? No; moonlight was still, and this stirred; while I gazed, it glided up to the ceiling and quivered over my head. I can now conjecture readily that this streak of light was, in all likelihood, a gleam from a lantern, carried by someone across the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... and so are sympathies; and so are signs; and the three combined make one mystery to which humanity has not yet found the key. I never laughed at presentiments in my life, because I have had strange ones of my own. Sympathies, I believe, exist (for instance, between far distant, long absent, wholly estranged relatives asserting, notwithstanding their alienation, the unity of the source to which each traces his origin) whose workings baffle mortal comprehension. And signs, for aught we know, may be but the sympathies of Nature with man. (Charlotte Bronte, Jane Eyre, Chapter 21, pg. 222) Foreshadowing s an odd thing too, as is symbolism, also are little hints from the author about supernatural tricks she ll use later to bring the protagonists back together when they re dozens of miles apart. Erm, what s that called? Yeah, a deux ex machina. This passage is noteworthy because it s one of the only moments that Jane actually claims to the reader that she believes in some kind of supernatural foreknowledge and, a psychic connection between people. Still, Jane proposes that these seemingly supernatural connections may have natural explanations that we just aren t aware ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Performance Practice of Baroque Vocal Technique Essay Performance Practice of Baroque Vocal Technique When approaching a performance, accomplished musicians often consider the historical context from which a piece originates. They most often think of such considerations in the application of that context as it pertains to early music that is, the Baroque era or earlier. For any era, such historical considerations are called performance practice, and may include the use of vibrato, ornamentation, dynamic levels, tempi, instrumental timbres, performance setting, and balance. Vibrato and ornamentation are two important areas of consideration that vocalists must explore when aiming to give an authentically Baroque performance. Ideal Baroque Vocal Technique : The Assumed Ideas ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In The Interpretation of Music, Thurston Dart writes: it is very unlikely that any vibrato was used in the ensemble singing of earlier times; the few theorists who mention it condemn it (51). In light of the intricate counterpoint employed by Renaissance and late medieval composers, it is natural that clear intonation would have been vital to the clarity of their multi voiced compositions. David Wulstan suggests that in singing the decorated Baroque songs, singers surely had to provide contrast between trilled and untrilled notes: Baroque singers could hardly have sung in such a way that trills were indistinguishable from the surrounding gelatinous wobble (179). Singers today, in an effort to project their voices in huge performance venues have to use their voice in way that produces, in most cases, a large vibrato. Large vibratos can make it difficult, at times, to hear a distinct pitch, and therefore trills (alternating quickly between two adjacent pitches) are also difficult to hear. Thus, it is easy to idealize a pure vocal quality so that there is a clear contrast between trilled and untrilled notes. Contrast is, after all, one defining characteristic of Baroque era musicГѓ thus, the amateur assumption has a reasonable basis. In regards to the decoration of Baroque music, amateurs often think that Baroque music is extremely ornamented. This practice is a more recently acceptable practice: scholar Ronald ... • 5. U.s. Foreign Policy Policies The U.S. foreign policy has always been linked to the domestic policy since the U.S. never feared of expanding its national interests over the national boarders. Isolation for the U.S. usually implied slow economic growth and the large number of destructive conflicts within, while impudent foreign policy always guaranteed an abrupt economic growth for the U.S. economy. After the U.S. intervened in the WWI and the WWII, the U.S. economy witnessed a tremendous economic growth, nearly elimination of the unemployment, rapid urbanization and overall growth of the standards of living across the country. Decisive foreign policyhas always been providing the U.S. economy with the sustainable and rapid economic growth, unlike the policy aimed at isolation of the U.S. According to Kaufman and Joyce (2010), preoccupation with the domestic issues never resulted in the long term economic growth for the U.S. Isolationist policies impeded the U.S. territorial expansion in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries (Kaufman Joyce 71). While some presidents indeed preferred isolationism like FDR during his first tenures as the U.S. President, he then abolished isolationist policies after the 1941 Pearl Harbor disaster. The U.S. witnessed that isolationist policies for the U.S. turned out to be extremely unproductive and even dangerous. Militarist Japan brutally attacked the U.S. fleet on Hawaii during the WWII, totally ignoring the U.S. neutral isolationist status in 1941. FDR had to confess ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Essay On The Making Of Malcolm Turn Bull We ve all heard the tired argument regurgitated by the ostentatious social commentator or the disillusioned anarchist uncle; politicians are selfish individuals who brilliantly spin webs of deceit only to create power for themselves and serve their own egos. And so it would seem, that Malcolm Turnbull an undeniably professional politician who rose to prime ministership undemocratically perhaps embodies these aforementioned qualities more than most. This apparently, isn t the case, at least according to his wife, daughter and two mates (and a less friendly journo, Malcolm Farr) when interviewed on Australian Story; Auntie s foremost programme where the most hard done by emoters like to, well, emote. Aired on the 21st of September last year, the half an hour documentary entitled The Making of Malcolm comprises of interviews telling the story of our prime minister s childhood and life before politics filmed in 09. This is merged with more recent interviews, exploring Turnbull s political career. There s an extreme emphasis on personal recollection and anecdotes of past events. This makes for a very personal production; one where truth takes a back seat behind the spectacular and the endearing. It also has the convenient side effect of being less disturbed by those pesky things the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The trap when analysing and teaching this documentary is to see it as about politics; it s not about Malcolm the politician (how boring), it s about Malcolm the man. This, of course means that the extremely small number of teachers that do indeed read mETAphor must instead teach the polemical characteristics of this film, rather than the factual. The unique format of The Making of Malcolm in particular the emphasis on the technique of interviews is a fertile source of comparison between political statements such as this story and more didactic pieces... • 8. Life and Suffering in the Trenches Essay World War I, also known as the Great War, endured from the summer of 1914 until the late fall of 1918. The war was fought between the Allies, which consisted mainly of the United Kingdom, France, and the Russian Empire, and the Central Powers, which consisted mainly of the German Empire, the Ottoman Empire, the Austro Hungarian Empire, and the Kingdom of Bulgaria (Alliances Entente and Central Powers). In total, it is estimated that twelve million civilians and nine million combatants died during this horrific and devastating war (DeGroot 1). When the war originated in 1914, many people thought that it would be a war of movement that would rapidly be settled. However, that changed when the Germans, who were trying to reach and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Soldiers followed a basic routine on normal days. The day began with the stand to in which soldiers would wake up an hour before dawn and stand on the firing step, rifles in hand, to look out for a predawn attack by the enemy (Feature Articles Life in the Trenches). Each trench possessed a firing step, which was placed two to three feet from the trench floor to allow soldiers to peer over the trench and spot the enemy (Fire Step). Stand to, which is short for stand for arms, occurred because it was believed that just before dawn, when it was still dark, was the best time to mount an attack (Ellis 38). Both sides practiced this morning ritual. After stand to and the morning hate, when both sides would relieve the tension of the morning by firing their machine guns in the air, an unofficial truce was called by the enemies for about an hour as they prepared and ate breakfast (Ellis 38). After breakfast, rifles were inspected and daily chores were appointed to the soldiers (Feature Article Life in the Trenches). Some chores included mending the trench by refilling sandbags, repairing duckboards on the floor, and pumping water or mud out of the trench after heavy rain falls (Feature Article Life in the Trenches). After lunch, more chores of the such were completed throughout the day. At dusk, stand to was again repeated to guard against a surprise enemy ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Cataclysmic Events Causing Mass Extinction Over 250 million years ago, Earth was struck with an asteroid that wiped out 95% of all species. This devastating event was followed by another natural disaster when, 50 million years later, a volcanic eruption caused massive lava floods. The floods triggered the breakup of Pangea, the original continent. This volcanic eruption created extreme global warming and the extinctionof 70% of marine life. These two examples are not the only times Earthhas experienced mass extinction. An extinction may be viewed as a natural part of evolution that occurs when a large proportion of a particular species completely dies off and ceases to exist. Extinctions are considered to be mass extinctions if the number of species becoming extinct is significantly larger than the normal, natural rate of extinction. These mass extinctions disrupt the entire global community. As part of our lesson, we included a pre, and post test to assess the class knowledge about Africa. We had the class take the pre test before starting our presentation. Once our presentation was complete, we handed out the post test with the same questions as the pre test, but in a different order. Once we had collected the tests, we calculated the mean scores of both, pre and post, and compared them in order to assess what the classes knowledge before, and after we presented the material. The scores also help to prove how transparent and effective our group was at presenting the material. The mean score was 5.4 for the pre test, and 9.15 for the post test. Bureaucratic administration allows businesses to thrive in terms of precision, continuity, unity, and the reduction of material and personal costs, according to Weber (Weber, 1978). Jim said he reckoned the widow was partly right and pap was partly right; so the best way would be for us to pick out two or three things from the list and say we wouldn t borrow them any more then he reckoned it wouldn t be no harm to borrow the others (Twain 72). This Insist that Huck Finn has found a middle ground of Pap s moral and the more sensible moral. Huck finn came up with an idea to surrender an item for the sake of borrowing another item. Dah you goes, de ole true Huck; de on y white genlman dat ever kep his promise to ole Jim (Twain 67). This infers that Jim made Huck felt guilty about having the thought of turning him in. Huck had promised to Jim that he would confess that he is with Huck, and Huck had kept his promise, thus making Huck s morality grown tremendously. In Huckleberry Finn, Twain states there is no need to search for a moral, but I believe there is a moral to this novel. Huck Finn has started with being not accepting of civilization and was highly immature, but as the book continues Huck grew his morality. Huck Finn came across complications throughout their adventure but Huck s lying got them out of it. With him close friend, and almost father figure was a big role in role in Huck finn s character development. Tennyson was one of the greats that came from the Victorian era. Tennyson wasn t just known for being a poet, he was also known for writing plays and music. There will be some comparing and contrasting of The Eagle and The Charge Of The Light Brigade on the poetic devices Tennyson used and what inspired him to write both these poems. Tennyson was inspired to write The Eagle when he went to the mountain. Even though The Eagle was a short poem, it had a lot of imagery. He clasps the crag with crooked hands a good use of imagery in this poem. It is also a metaphor because Tennyson wrote it as if the eagle had hands like a human. It explained about how the eagle lives in its natural habitat. The Eagle had a rhymescheme of (a, a, a) which is a triple rhyme, where the stanzas have three lines and they all rhyme. The poem also contains alliteration and simile. And like a thunderbolt he falls is a simile that was used that could be used to describe the eagle falling. In all cases we would think Tennyson meant the eagle was falling fast like a thunderbolt but he wasn t. Although the unwary reader might associate the swift, downward flight of the eagle with a lightning bolt, Tennyson does not use this term (Jackson 26). He was wording it as the sound of the rock landing a thunderbolt (Jackson 26). The poem uses alliteration such as He ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I will calculate the same process for the two other confidence intervals. .025 .95 .025 I did the diagram for the 95% confidence interval which then added the left side of .95 and .025 to get .975. I used InvNorm(.975) and calculated the z score of 1.959963986 and applied the margin of error formula 1.959963986*в€ љ62/100*(1 62/100)/100= .0951339949. Once finding the margin of error I applied the formula 62/100 .0951339949 ≤ p ≤ 62/100+.09513399496 and I calculated .5248660051 ≤ p ≤ .7151339949. .005 .99 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 49. Before Sunrise and Before Sunset The films Before Sunrise and Before Sunset are said to represent the so called slacker genre. Slackers are individuals in society who have no direction and no reasonable expectation or realistic goals in life. This term is mainly used with Generation X ers (people born between 1961 and 1981) (Casto, What s A Slacker Movie? ). Slacker movies are films that deal with the ordinary day to day life of these people. In Before Sunrise and Before Sunset the characters sense of wandering and the feel of aimlessness is what make them qualify as slacker films. It is a different story telling, not the classical Hollywood story where boy meets girl, falls in love and lives happily ever after but a real story with perhaps no happy ending or no ending... The difference is that nine years earlier, they were a twenty something couple both single, which represented the Generation X, people who grew up in the me generation of the [1970s and] 1980s and now recognize that it was not all that it was cracked up to be (Jochim, Generation X defies definition ). Nine years later, and in their thirties and both attached to other people, they realize that they are constrained by the choices they have made and that getting older means no longer having the chance to realize ones potential through their free choice (Wartenberg, Before Sunset | Philosophy Now ). At the end of the film Before Sunset CГ©line and Jesse are in her apartment listening to music and she begins to dance reminding him about his flight. The camera turns to Jesse where he is seen twirling his wedding ring on his finger. As a viewer the twirling of the wedding ring is representing the uncertainty about his happiness in his marriage. This situation is very much relatable to the audience as divorce and the struggle of marriage has become a common occurrence in today s society. Both the films Before Sunrise and Before Sunset are about CГ©line s and Jesse s relationship and their mutual interest in conversation. They spend a lot of time talking about their feelings yet never sincerely act upon them. The films can relate to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 50. How Does Terry Malloy Change In On The Waterfront On the Waterfront is set on the docks, a very dismal place. The black and white photography make the streets, alleyways and small, cramped apartments seem dark and bleak. While the union bosses live well, the workers seem trapped by their situation, with no way to get out. Terry Malloy is a low level worker for the union boss, who is not really aware that he is a part of the corruption. He is asked to lure Joey Doyle to the roof of his apartment building, and believes that the union men just want to lean on him a little bit (On the Waterfront) about testifying before the waterfront crime commission. When he learns that he actually lured Joey to his death, he is upset by the fact that he betrayed his friend, and acts very defensively when... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, for most of the characters, choosing to do what is right can be difficult. Opposing the union bosses can be dangerous, as evidenced by the deaths of Andy, Joey and Kayo. Therefore, many of the dock workers prefer to do nothing and remain alive. Other characters, such as Father Barry and Edie, have a strong internal moral code, and personal considerations do not impact their decision to do what is right. However, in the case of Terry, his background and current affiliations present a number of obstacles which prevent him from freely listening to what his conscience is telling him to do. Terry is owned by Johnny Friendly, and cannot protest against the jobs that are given to him. This ownership goes back to the days when Terry was a prize fighter, and was made to take a fall when Friendly bet against him. Charley, Terry s older brother, is a key member of Friendly s group, and was the one who told Terry he had to take the fall. When Friendly learns that Terry has been subpoenaed to appear before the crime commission, he sends Charley to persuade Terry to stop seeing Edie, and take a high paying job with the union. Terry refuses and Charley pays the price with his life. When Terry goes looking for Friendly to get revenge, Father Barry tells him: don t fight him like a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 51. Comparing Cinderella And Grimm s Adaptation Of Cinderella The Grimm version and the Disney version of Cinderella differ regarding the presence of a godmother s role as well as the discovery of the owner of the glass slipper. To begin, in the Grimm version, unlike the Perrault version, there is the absence of a fairy godmother. She is instead replaced by nature which is seen as a female role, therefore the womanly figure manifests itself. Cinderellaplants the hazel twig her father brings home for her because she wept so much that her tears fell upon it and watered it (Grimm 2). The twig turned into a beautiful and magical tree as a result of Cinderella sadness. A symbolic importance is placed on where the tree is planted. Due to the fact that it lies on top of her mother s grave, it reinforces the idea that her mother is watching over her and presents herself partially in nature.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Cinderella s favour, whenever she expressed a wish, the bird would throw down what she had wished for (Grimm 2). In the Grim story, the bird acts as the young girl s fairy blessed with the power to grant her most extravagant wishes. For example, when Cinderella cries out, Shake and quiver, little tree, throw gold and silver down to me (Grimm 3) the bird quickly throws a dazzling silver and gold dress along with silk shoes. In addition, the birds are omnipresent and defend Cinderella when she is being threatened. For example, when one of the stepsisters cuts off her toe, forces her foot into the shoe, swallows the pain and heads off to see the awaited prince, the pigeons on the hazel tree cry out Rook di goo, rook di goo! There s blood in the shoe. The shoe is too tight, This bride is not right (Grimm 5). These pigeons therefore intervene in the favour of their beloved ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 52. What Is The Narrative Techniques Used In Northanger Abbey Jane Austen s Northanger Abbey is a bildungsroman, a coming of age story that focuses on the psychological development, and maturity of the protagonist Catherine Morland. This essay will analyse the language, and narrative techniques of the set extract, and discuss how this excerpt suggests vicissitude in Catherine s priorities, within her role as Austen s female bildungsroman. In addition, it will discuss the domestic gothic and real life abuse that prevails in ordinary situations. Furthermore, it will argue how Austen s rhetorical techniques work to encourage reader interest, and to exercise perception, when distinguishing between appearance, and reality. Finally, it will conclude by briefly discussing the significance of the extract within... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Written in third person limited omniscient, and filtered predominantly through Catherine. The unknown narrator slips effortlessly into free indirect disclosure, which adopts the tone and inflection of an individual characters voice. This technique allows the narrator to intrude into the narrative to offer advice, or to foreshadow the characters. However, the narrator frequently breaks from convention and addresses the reader directly. Setting and imagery, is important in the novel, the word Abbey , represents connotations of the gothic itself, which conjures up expectations of horror, and danger, and visions of the uncanny. Characterisation, through dialogue and free indirect disclosure allows readers to perceive for themselves the personality and agendas of each individual. The word choice is rich, and the narrative construction subtle, compassionate, and credible, making the phrasing natural, realistic, and easily understood through tone and dialogue. • 53. Nabokov Signs And Symbols Do you ever feel like your trapped in a cage and no one can provide the help you need? Even in the story Signs and Symbols mostly every character was trapped in life mentally or sane. In Sign and Symbol a story by Nabokov he uses great metaphors, describing Russian couple s mentally ill son as a bird or comparing the underground trains as living things. I will argue that Nabokov used the bird to symbolize the son and the bird flying as his freedom he craves as a semiotic interpretation. Nabokov used the bird to symbolize the mentally ill son and how the son also felt like he was a bird. In the description, when the mother was going through the family album, she said The boy, aged six that was when he drew wonderful birds with human hands ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
