Essay on Malibu Fires
Malibu Fires
Human beings are able to adapt to almost any environment, unfortunately sometimes we take
advantage of our natural surroundings. We find ourselves amidst a struggle between our lifestyles
and nature. Although we affect nature profoundly with our activities, we in turn are shaped by
nature s potent forces.
Nature can be brutal to humans, but we must remember that it merely is following its course. As a
result, we must learn to coexist with it. Fire is a naturally occurring phenomenon which humans
have learned to deal with throughout history.
Yet when fire burns uncontrollably, there is great potential for monumental damage to all
surrounding biomass. The Malibu wildfires are an example of one ... Show more content on

It was the most devastating fire in the area, surpassing the previous worst fire in 1980 that burned
55 homes at the mouth of the San Gabriel Canyon. The total damage caused by wildfires in the San
Gabriel Mountains within the past 60 years amounted to the loss of 332 homes.
Statistically, Malibu and its surrounding area has seen much damage done to its vegetation and
inhabitants. There have been 24 wildfires that burned a total of 271,047 acres since 1927. These
fires have caused a total of five deaths and the destruction of 1,502 homes along with 830 other
structures.
Recent fires include the Malibu fire in 1985, Dayton Fire in 1982 and Malibu
Canyon fire in 1970. In the Malibu Fire, 103 homes were destroyed; in the
Dayton Fire, 85 homes were destroyed. The Malibu Canyon Fire, which joined forces with the
New Hall Fire on September 25, 1970, destroyed a total of 135 homes and burned through a total of
85,000 acres (Wildfire sec. 2 p.1). Out of all the homes burned, 70 were located in Malibu and 65
in Chatsworth (Wildfire sec. 2 p.1). Previous to that fire, the last time Topanga Canyon had seen a
damaging fire was December 30, 1956, when 74 homes were destroyed (Wildfire sec.
3 p.1). Another painful memory for Topanga Canyon occurred between 1938 and
1943, during which time three fires destroyed more than 600 structures.

Public Policy Goals For Ip Voice Services Haven
The future of VOIP could also be formed by a lot of politics. As we ve seen, the various
approaches of the EU and therefore the U.S. haven t made any form of neutral zone during
which problems with VOIP readying will be adjudged solely on their technical deserves. In the
U.S., the history of linking social and economic policies to a network centric read of the globe has
caused inevitable confusion as services become more and more application centric. And up to date
steps to accommodate public policy goals to IP voice services haven t mainly addressed the massive
queries of regulative classification. The implementation of forward looking, technologically neutral
classifications in the European Union has not made the applying of regulatory discretion immune
from political support by dominant carriers. First, through international consultation. Europe and
also the U. S. (much less the remainder of the planet, as well as the nations of Asia that lead the
world in broadband deployment) need not adopt identical rules. They will leave room for
experimentation. For example, the approach to emergency services need not be identical perhaps
there is a demand for governmental mandate, perhaps for voluntary (but ubiquitous) business
action, perhaps just for government mandated shopper notice. At the same time, some main
principles like access to markets might most likely need harmonization, as VOIP services move
freely across borders. Second, by understanding the bounds of

An Open Letter For Friends And Family
An open letter to friends and family:
A Brief Intro/Background
This letter will no doubt be hard for many of you to read, I empathize as it was also hard to write.
I beg your patience and hope you read through to the end. What I would like to convey to you is
my recent shift in world view. That is to say that I recently came to realize that I am an atheist.
This is likely shocking to most of you. Let me be clear by what I intend to convey by identifying as
such. I do not mean to say I am opposed to religion, or claim there is no God. I still identify very
much with LDS culture and attend church regularly. Rather, I identify as an atheist as a way to
convey that I seem to have lost Faith that there is a God. Over the last year I have studied and
ponder in depth to discover as best I could truth. Before I get there I want to be clear as to the
perspective in which I am coming from.
I was raised in a very active and loving family of the LDS Church. My family is still very active,
my father and my mother have served in leadership roles. They are both full of faith and charity
and am grateful for their love and support throughout my life. I, myself have served in leadership
roles in the church both as a young man and as a missionary for the church. I served a 2 year
mission in west Texas spreading the gospel of JesusChrist as I understood it. I was married in an
LDS temple to my wonderful wife. My in laws are also very devout members of the LDS church.

Speech On Zora Neale Hrston
eneral purpose: To inform
Specific Purpose: To inform the audience about how influential Zora Neale Hurston was.
Thesis/Central Idea: The three specific things about Zora Neale Hurston that makes her influential
/admirable include being a key figure in the Harlem Renaissance, an anthropologist, and an
American writer regarding folklore.
Introduction
I. (Attention Getter) Quote by Zora Neale Hurston about Harlem Renaissance It would be against
all nature for all the Negroes to be either at the bottom, top, or in between. We will go where the
internal drive carries us like everybody else. It is up to the individual.
II. (Relevancy Statement) One of the reasons Zora Neale Hurston is an influential person was
because of her works at the time of the Harlem Renaissance. This quote combines both the
reawakening of creativity and the ambitious push for others to put forth their own creative works.
III. (Credibility Statement) In 1926, Zora and a collection of other young writers including
Langston Hughes and Wallace Thurman produced a literary magazine called Fire!! This showcased
the art of the Harlem Renaissance. Their Eyes Were Watching God was written by Zora during her
field trip to Haiti and is now regarded as a classic African American feminist text. Their Eyes Were
Watching God rejects assimilating White America s cultural standards, but instead celebrated
African American communities.

Also, just because someone is vaccinated, there is no guarantee that they will have immunity.
Vaccines may give a person antibodies against the diseases, but there is no way to control the
amount. If there is a low amount of antibodies, than the person is likely to develop the disease.
This information relates to my TED talk because vaccines are a problem and harm the body.
Because of how society views them, people believe that they can develop immunity against
diseases which is not the case. This will strengthen my position because I believe that vaccines

my claim about vaccines. Mercury and Autism. SafeMinds Autism Environment. SafeMinds, 2009.

mercury and focuses on the determining whether or not it causes autism. They believe that because

Service Quality And Service Performance
Traditionally, Service quality can be portrayed as the result from client comparison between their
assumptions about the service they will use and their insight about the service company. That
implies that if the insight recognitions would be higher than the desired the service will be
considered as fabulous, if the desires rise to the insight observations the serviceis viewed as great
and if the desires are not met the service will be viewed as awful. For a service to be considered as
goodthe organisation is required for making customers satisfied and service quality should be
associated with customer perceptions and expectations. (Carlsson, 2010)
Service Quality as described by (William G. Zikmund, 1993) is the degree to which the
performance of service provider s matches customer expectations. It can also be defined as those
essential characteristics of a service that measures its excellence .
Researcher s trust that the service quality theory depends on the literature of client satisfaction and
product quality. In other words, service quality can be defined as the customer s overall journey of
experience with the product, which can be measured by customer satisfaction while experiencing
the service.
The two major components of service quality are

Gilpin And Fiscal
Unlike Strange, Gilpin denies the notion that the nation state has been undermined by the rise of
international organizations and nongovernmental actors. While some research suggests that the
market is wrestling with the state for control over the commanding heights of the economy, Gilpin
disagrees and argues that the nation state continues to be the major actor in both domestic and
international affairs (Barma and Vogel, p. 535). The claim that the economic globalization and
transnational economic forces are declining the authority of the states is exaggerated, he says;
for better or for worse, this is still a state dominated world Barma and Vogel, p. 536). If there was
an argument to be made about the declining power of the states, it would be the decades prior to
World War I when markets were truly supreme and governments had little power over economic
affairs (Barma and Vogel, p. 537). As for the twentieth and twenty first centuries, states have pretty
much remained a major actor in the globalized economy. For example, while... Show more content

Mdh Assay Lab Report
Enzymes are biological catalysts, usually made up of protein molecules that act on one or more
specific substrates, converting them to products with different molecular structures. Malate
Dehydrogenase (MDH) is one example of an enzyme that catalyzes oxaloacetic acid and NADH
into malic acid and NAD+ as part of the citric cycle. In order to perform the MDH assay, a solution
of pure MDH was collected from bovine heart. A control assay was performed, along with three
experimental groups to test concentration, pH, and temperature. Units of activity were calculated
and showed that all three variables have an effect on enzyme activity. MDH was shown to have an
optimum pH, concentration, and temperature at which enzyme activity was at its highest... Show
more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was hypothesized that as the enzyme concentration increases, the reaction rate increases. Also
that as the pH moves away, both increasing and decreasing, from the optimum pH (7.5) the reaction
rate decreases. Lastly, as the temperature moves away, both increasing and decreasing, from the
optimum temperature (37 oC) the reaction rate decreases. All of the results, as described below,
were consistent with the hypothesis that was made. As the results show in Figure 1, as the
concentration of enzymes is increased, the units of activity also increased with the maximum being
0.0622 Вµmol/min at 1X concentration. This may be because when the enzyme is in a higher
concentration there is more catalyst present, causing the reaction rate to increase. As Figure 2
shows, altering the pH, either higher or lower, had a negative effect on the reaction rate. This
indicates that the optimum pH for this reaction is approximately 7.5, giving a rate of 0.0622 Вµmol
/min. It is possible that altering the pH to extreme highs or lows causes the configuration of the
enzyme to be altered and inhibits the biochemical system. The results also show that temperature
has an affect on the reaction

Why Is Leonardo Da Vinci Important To The World
That s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind. Neil Armstrong s famous words as he
became the first human to set foot on the moon; but how did we get there? It all started with some
of the world s earliest and most innovative inventors. Leonardo da Vinci and Thomas Edison were
two of the smartest and most influential people in history, but only one is worthy of being the most
significant inventor. Leonardo da Vinciis famous for his skills as an artist, but he also had many
talents as an inventor. Leonardo was born what is now the country of Italy in the year 1452
(Leonardo). He was born without a surname, as he was the child of a peasant. Instead, his
surname comes from the place of his birth, Vinci. The words da Vinci translated to English means
from Vinci, (Leonardo Bio). Da Vinci quickly learned how to utilize his talents even though he
never obtained a school education. History.com, a television channel as well as an online website,
says, [Leonardo] Da Vinci received no formal education beyond basic reading, writing and math,
(Leonardo). Instead, when he was fifteen, Leonardo s father apprenticed him to the world
renowned sculptor and painter named Andrea del Verrocchio (Leonardo). Andrea helped da Vinci
become the great artist he was as he went on to create many famous pieces of artwork. Leonardo...

Prostitution Victimless Crime
The notion that prostitution is a victimless crime has been accepted by many since in theory,
neither participants of the crime are unwilling or harmed in the process. However, upon further
exploration, this notion is found to be critically flawed. A victimless crime has been described as
a situation in which a socially disapproved and legally proscribed exchange occurs with lack of
apparent harm to others (Schur, 1965 cited in Roach Anleau, 2006). It is understood if a participant
is willing and a lack of harm exists, the crimeis victimless. Prostitutionis not a criminal offence in
Australia however, allowing a premises to be used for prostitution, soliciting in public or living on

In the case of prostitution, this becomes more complicated. In order to determine whether there is a
victim in prostitution, the concept of consent must be re examined. In Harding and Hamilton s
study (2008), several prostitutes were asked whether they were forced into the act. All of the
respondents stated they had felt coerced into sex work by their partners typically, abusive and
violent men . It was suggested that many prostitutes suffer from a false consciousness where they
are a victim, despite not identifying as one. (Harding Hamilton, 2008). Benson and Matthews
(1995) support this claim concluding from their studies that although many believe prostitutes
should be able to continue their freely chosen occupation unrestricted, the truth is that many battle
from various forms of dependency. It appears prostitution is unlikely to be a free choice, rather,
stems from desperation, abuse, control and coercion. Some of those involved in sex work may
convince themselves they chose to do so in an attempt to exert some control over their lives and
bodies (Harding Hamilton, 2008). Ultimately, if the willingness of the prostitute is lacking then we
cannot label prostitution as a victimless

Cubism by Pablo Picasso and George Braques
During the beginning of the 20th century the world was developing at an unprecedented,
intense speed, artists were looking for a new Avant garde way to create works. Hence, cubism
came to life a truly revolutionary style of modern art developed by Pablo Picasso and Georges
Braques (Lance 2010 :2). Many critics challenged this new style due to its unconventional use of
semiotics and lack of social sense. However, this is exactly what Cubists wanted to be,
unconventional challenging the traditions of Western art which they believed had become tired
and run its course. As the world was developing and new inventions were being created such as
the car, aeroplane , cinematography and the telephone. People like Picasso and Braque found it
increasingly difficult to attempt to create works on the basis of these ideas. They believed that the
modernity of these things and the society at the time was unable to be represented by the
exhausted constraints of the conventional forms of representation which had been around since as
early on as the Renaissance. Moving away from the traditional Western rules of what was suitable
when creating art dadists and surrealists start to undermine artistic convention ( Freeman 1989 : 1)
and in turn the cubists do to . As Freeman states in her article, they were attracted to that which
appealed to people not aesthetically but rather on an intellectual level, hence why critics believed
that they had become devoid of any social sense because

My Grandpa Was An Amazing Man
My grandpa was my biggest inspiration in life until the day he died. The day he died was
something I never wanted to experience. That day changed me. He was the most amazing man in
my eyes. He loved unconditionally and was always there for us kids. My grandpa was in no way,
shape, or form perfect. He made mistakes, but he always taught me differently. Nine years ago,
when my grandpa passed, he left his mark on my familyand I. grandpa, even though made
mistakes, was an amazing man. He worked hard every day, loved unconditionally, and lived life
to the fullest. Before my grandpa passed he lived every moment of every day without hesitation.
This man always worked hard so he could provide for his family. Grandpa never took work

he would carve marble, granite, etc. anything that was able to be carved he carved. He would

he and my dad had done was a huge piece for a church. This piece was the Ten Commandments, it
was maybe three feet taller than them. I always loved going to the shop with him and watching
him carve it was the neatest thing. Every time my grandpa worked I always made sure I was

Introduction of Disease Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), also known as acute lymphoid or
lymphocytic leukemia, is a cancer of the white blood cells (McCoy, 2015). More specifically, it is
a cancerous conversion and procreation of lymphoid progenitor cells in the blood, extramedullary
sites, and in the bone marrow (Terwilliger, Abdul Hay, 2017). In 2017, 62,130 people were
expected to be diagnosed with leukemia and there were an estimated 363,794 people living with or

and lead to a decrease of other blood cells. ALL is deadlier in adults but has a high survival rate in
children. Most children are cured after treatment and the number of adults in remission has grown
in the past decades.

Defining Success in the War on Terrorism Essay
Defining Success in the War on Terrorism
In pursuing its war on terrorism, the Bush administration faces daunting military and diplomatic
challenges. But need it also worry about mobilizing public support? With the latest polls showing
the public giving the president 90 percent approval ratings and endorsing the use of force at the
same level, could the White House possibly hope for any more backing from the American people?
President Bush seems to think so. Every speech he gives appears to be primarily concerned with
shoring up public opinion, warning us about the difficulties ahead and purposefully praising
Americans for their patience and resolve. The administration understands a basic truth about

intervention in Somalia because American soldiers died, while it accepted our actions in Kosovo
because no Americans died. This is the myth of the casualty phobic public a canard that genuinely
casualty phobic policymakers have found expedient, but which has left America vulnerable to
exactly the kind of terrorist attack we just witnessed. What is Osama bin Laden s fundamental
premise if not the belief that killing some Americans will drive our country to its knees?
Actually, the public will support even a costly war provided the stakes warrant it and the president
can persuasively promise victory. In this instance, the stakes could not be higher. What is lacking is
a compelling account of victory, a frame for war aims that shapes how the public will interpret
unfolding events.
Early attempts at providing such a frame were hopelessly, if understandably, grandiose. The
administration has appropriately retreated from its vow to rid the world of evil, rid the world of
evildoers, or even rid the world of terrorists. Worthy goals but simply unachievable. The narrower

Causes Of The Stratovolcano Tambora
The stratovolcano Tambora makes up the 60 km wide Sanggar Peninsula on northern Sumbawa
Island, Indonesia, and is still currently active today. Erupting on April 10, 1815, Tambora, which is
considered the largest observed eruption in recorded history, induced mass destruction to villages,
widespread famine, and global climate change that would last for years to come. Standing nearly
14,000 feet high, Tambora experienced small tremors and streams of pyroclastic flow before
erupting, shooting 60 megatons of sulfur, 36 cubic miles of ash, pumice, and aerosols into the
atmosphere. Sulfurous gas from the volcanocombined with water vapor droplets in the air, which
then stuck in earth s atmosphere, and were dispersed through both hemispheres due to stratospheric
currents. These particles then increased sunlight absorption, contributing to lower amounts of
sunlight seen from earth. This caused a drop in global temperatures by nearly 5.4 degrees
fahrenheit. These temperature drops reached as far as New England, which caused difficulty in
crop production and increased famine, leading to the year of 1816 being called the year without a
summer. The initial impact of the eruption killed somewhere around 10,000 citizens instantly, while
the chain of events afterwards, including food shortages, famine, pyroclastic flows, and tsunamis,
caused an estimated 100,000 deaths.
The massive eruption measured a 7 on the VEI scale, or Volcanic Explosivity Index, and
released around 100 cubic km of magma. In total, it lasted no more than 3 days, and 300 500
million kilograms of volcanic debris was released per second. Stratovolcanoes produce magma
that contain high amounts of silica, giving it a high viscosity, or thickness, causing it to not flow
very far. 500,000 square kilometers of land around Tambora was covered with at least 1
centimeter of ash. Following the eruption, a collapse caldera was formed. These are formed when
a powerful volcanic eruption occurs, and collapses in on the weak rock that had previously been
supporting the magma chamber underneath the volcano, forming a crater. This caldera is now
around 1.2 kilometers deep, meaning the volcano lost several kilometers of elevation following the
eruption. It is

Corruption Of Power Essay
The body, mind, and soul of an individual are capable of becoming corrupted by power. Power
makes one feel as if that person was a God, which is a sign of the corruption in that individual.
According to Lord Actin, Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely, states that power
can make an individual vulnerable to corruption. The second portion of Lord Actin?s quote
discusses absolute power corrupting absolutely which implies that absolute power can corrupt an
individual as well as the individual?s surroundings. This idea of corruption can be located in
fictional novels such as Animal Farm by George Orwell. Animal Farm is a story about animals

The absolute power Hussein possessed led to the absolute corruption of Iraq for nearly twenty four
years. During Hussein?s rule, 200,000 people were killed or ?disappeared?. Another major dictator
was Adolf Hitler who dictated and killed countless human beings. Hitler?s philosophy of thinking
made him kill retarded, crippled, and disabled children along with homosexuals and Jewish people.
The power that Hitler received when he became leader corrupted him and made him kill six million
Jews, nearly committing genocide on the Jewish population. The corruption increased, with Hitler?s
desired to expand Nazi Germany. In addition, the dictatorship and corruption caused by power is
also expressed in fictional stories.
Power corrupting individuals also applies to literature and fictional novels. One example of
power causing corruption is found in a novel called Animal Farm by George Orwell. Animal Farm
is a story about animals ruled and dictated by humans. Eventually, the animals overthrow their
human dictator, Mr. Jones, and try to form their own government. After a pig named Napoleon
was declared leader, he gained power which caused him to become corrupted. Napoleon dictated
the animals and the entire farm throughout the novel. Napoleon considering himself as powerful as

California Musical Instruments
Despite their failure to convert them religiously through music, the natives were left with a Spanish
influence because even after secularization they continued to use European instruments such as:
Violins, violas, and guitars (Ray and Engbeck 1974:16) and most stopped using native instruments.
Because of this neglect, there only remains fragmentary evidence outside of a few early
ethnographies and written descriptions of events in the California missions on native music, while
several hundred European style musical instruments were being played in California. (Ray and

But the musicians and singers were in the worst position because their abilities proved to be

This lack of easy transition to the Mexican Californio society may have actually helped solidify
Spanish influence over those involved in mission music. This inability to survive outside of the

them embraced their situations. This was most true for the choristers who persevered in practicing

Research And Development Cost Analysis
Today, companies are increasing their spending on research and development more than ever
before. Research and development costs are the costs that a company incurs to either improve its
existing products and processes, or develop entirely new endeavors. Thus, as research and
development costs are now inevitable for businesses in order to beat out competitors, it is important
to understand the accounting treatment for these costs under the guidance of both GAAP and IFRS.
Both research and development costs are expensed as incurred under GAAP; however, there is
further guidance regarding the accounting treatment of software development that allows for
possible capitalization of related development costs. A report issued by PWC states that,... Show

18). Once these criteria are met, development costs can then be capitalized and amortized over a
period of time and as a result, would show the recognition of the continuous benefit from the
development costs that contributed to the asset.
An important point for companies that are following IFRS guidelines here is to differentiate
between costs that are related to research activities and those related to development activities, since
they require different treatments. According to KPMG, the definition of what constitutes research
costs versus development costs is very similar between IFRS and GAAP; however, neither provides
a clear definition that easily differentiates the two categories (IFRS, 2017). Because of the different
accounting treatment required, it is imperative that a company develops processes and controls that
allow the distinction to be made based on the nature of different activities. This ensures the most
accurate representation of research and development costs presented in the financial statements of
an entity.
The previously discussed guidance is pertaining to intangible assets that were developed by the
entity itself; there is separate guidance regarding research and development costs related to
intangible assets obtained through the acquisition of another company. Under GAAP, capitalization
depends on both the type of acquisition,

International And International Students At Universities
All over most college campuses there is a group of students that commonly get over looked; the
international students. International students make up a good majority of a lot of college
campuses. Statistics have shown that 1,000,000 international students are enrolled at universities in
the United States of America (Migration Policy Institute). I chose to observe a group of
international students at universities, because this is a topic that is of interest to me. Since
international students are so common at universities, they play a big part in our society. It does
seem that possibly at times, international students can get overlooked because at many universities
they are in the minority. Even though there are many differences between non international and
international students, we all share one purpose; to get an education at a universityin the United
Statesof America. If an international studentis at a university in America, in most cases you can
assume they are there for a purpose. For international students, they are in a complete different
country than their family. Most students would not do that, unless they have a purpose in doing it.
Most international students come to the states to get better quality education, so they can have a
future with better opportunities. People s view on international students, in most cases would

Gabrielle Bonheur Coco Chanel is one of the greatest fashion inventors of all time. In her early
life as a child, she was put in an orphanage by her father after her mother s death. Her father
worked as a peddler and didn t make enough money to take care of her. He barely made enough
money to keep himself alive. The nuns of her orphanage taught her how to sew which became a
vital know how for her career later on. To earn money to live on her own, she started a singing
career at local clubs in Vichy and Moulins where her nickname Coco began. At about 20 years of
age, Chanelbegan a relationship with Etienne Balsan who offered her money to help her start
her career. She left Etienne for a wealthier friend of his, Arthur Boy Chapel. Both of these men
were a key ingredient in Coco s first fashion experiment. When she opened her first shop on Paris

designs were made with things from a man s closet, but making them feminine. She also tried to
make these outfits comfortable rather than the constraints of the outfits that were popular at that
time. The main idea was to shorten the time that women spent in the morning getting ready for the

Essay on Analysis of The Revolt of Mother
Analysis of The Revolt of Mother
The Revolt of Mother by Mary Wilkins Freeman, was a story of a woman who lived in New
England around or before the author s time. The mother, Sarah Penn, was kept out of the families
decisions by the father, Adoniram Penn, until one event that lead to her taking drastic actions while
her husband was gone. There are many religious symbols and actions taken by Mother within the
story. Through the story Sarah moved from a feeling of servitude to her husband, to a feeling that
she was in servitude to the Lords will and this led her, in the end, to hold power over her husband.

Sarah, on the other hand, is an interpreter of the Lords will.
Sarah comes to the conclusion that she is doing the Lords will when she declared the new
maxim for her self. She now believed that Unsolicited opportunities are the guideposts of the
Lord to the new roads of life . She knows that this is an unsolicited opportunity because she had
nothing to do with Hiram sending notice of a good horse to father. It is also known that Sarah
believes she is doing by the Lords will because it is a providence to her; which is taken as her
having divine foresight. This foresight comes from her being a new spirit.
The sense that she is a new spirit is implied when she states, I ve let the fire go out (528). Even
though she is talking about the stove, it is taken that it is a fire inside of her. The fire, which is
a means of destruction and chaos, was burning up her soul. And now that it was out a new spirit

Theogony And The Biblical Book Of Genesis, Hesiod And Genesis
At first glance, the story of how it all began in Hesiod s Theogony, and in the Biblical book of
Genesis reveals certain similarities that I picked up on. Hesiod and Genesis share the same order
of events: mankind exists in alongside heavenly beings in utopia where there is just; a woman is
introduced into this utopian world; the actions of the womanproduces the loss of before said
utopia. This pattern is used by both works of literature to better explain the presence of problems
such as chaos and turmoil in human existence, and both Hesiod and Genesis credit the first woman
with these problems. In a journal article Published by The Johns Hopkins University Press, the
author declares that It is especially striking that the biblical... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

(Genesis 3.16)
But despite these similarities, Eve and Pandora are characteristically different. Unlike Pandora,
Eve is not naturally evil. She was created from one of Adams ribs, making Eve of the same
material and nature as her husband. Pandora, conversely, is basically different from man. I
figured this because Hesiod does not give a significant story of how man came to be in these
sections, but Pandora s attributes from the gods, including both her beauty and her deceitfulness,
marks her as a separate individual. However, Eve is meant to be a companion for Adam, to say
that Pandora was a gift is plainly ironic. This inconsistency is at the difference between the
women. Pandora is a punishment for man. Theogony exposes this, by calling her evil for man or
through the instance with the jar, which is an indicator of her deceitful nature. Neither work
specifies if Pandora actually undergoes suffering alongside man. Eve, however, is a victim of her
actions as much as Adam is, and these two suffer together, if not wholly in the same way.
Despite their inherent differences, I do believe they are similar in how they are portrayed as the
less significant sex. Despite Eve being created from Adam, she was not created of an entirely new
framework such as Adam, as if she was not important enough to do so. Both Pandora and Eve were
created secondly both

The Current Status Of Prostitution Essay
Research on Prostitution

November 14, 2016
Abstract
This paper will examine the current status of prostitution as an illegal act and the market it
generates; then show what effect legalizing prostitution would have on the prostitution market.
Prostitution has a very large market that if legalized could be used as a source of revenue for
governments through the form of taxes. So the focus will include how the prostitution market is
generated, what parts make up the prostitution market, what profits are made from the prostitution
market, and other such subjects related to the prostitution market.
Research of Prostitution Prostitution is often considered to be one of the oldest professions in
history. All that someone needs would be someone willing to give their body to other people in
exchange for monetary compensation. However, this kind of act is considered criminal by many
societies and as such time is often served by those who are caught participating in the act of
prostitution on either side. While the punishments, convictions, and sanctions vary from state to
state and nation to nation it has all lead to forcing this act to be done out of the line of sight of the
law. With the earliest known example of prostitution occurring in the Ancient Near East where
sacred prostitution was practiced in shrines and temples under various deities of the region (Godley
1920). Since then the market for prostitution has grown to expand

The Origins, History, Value, and Future of Cartography
THE ORIGINS, HISTORY, VALUE AND FUTURE OF CARTOGRAPHY
Introduction
Cartography has existed for thousands of years. From the early days of tribes marking off
where their best hunting grounds are, to the modern day of mapping flight paths, cartography
has evolved and developed in various ways to what it is today. There are now technologies that
allow for people to design maps in ways never imagined before. Computer programmes exist that
allow for different types of data to be stored so that accurate representations can be formed. It has
been said that, Maps are pictures of the world s land surface, showing its features, resources and
the way it has been developed. (Bondi, et al., 1977)
Origins and History
The beginnings of Cartography
It has been said that Cartography originated thousands of years ago. Wall paintings believed to
represent a maps of the heavens exist all around the world. The oldest maps that have been
preserved on Babylonian clay tablets are from around 2300 B.C. Cartography as a whole was
dominant in Greece as the subject was more advanced than other locations and so the spherical
Earth was well known amongst Greek philosophers. (Aber, 2008). The reference line principle
was created by one of Aristotle s disciples. Dichaearchus was this disciple s name and he obtained
this theory by placing an orientation line that ran from east to west. (Fuechsel, 2013)
The Roman Era is the next part of history where Cartography was involved in. Maps in this time

Amy Chua has compared the Western parenting style to the Chinese parenting style, and in her
words, Western parents usually don t come close to being Chinese mothers (Chua, 2011b, para. 4).

Road King Trucks Case Analysis Essay
Abstract
This paper is an analysis of Road King Trucks new project which is introducing a new product into
its product line. I will decide whether run the project or not. Six issues will be discussed as follows
1) importance of energy cost; 2) project s cash flows; 3) cost of capital; 4) choose an engine 5)
evaluation 6) accept or reject.
We should accept the project because of the positive NPV and high IRR. We will gain $532
million in wealth which is a big money on the scale like this. The company has a bond rating of
AA that makes the risk relatively low. So we should definitely say yes.

The land was accounted for opportunity cost. If we don t run the project, we can sell it and earn $6

Cost of Capital (see table 2) I used WACC as the discount factor, we expect the rate of return to be
higher than it, the same at least. The WACC reflects the average risk and overall capital structureof
the entire firm [2]. It s the required return and it presents how much the company pays for the
capital it finances. In this case, the cost of equity is 10.33%, the cost of debt is 6.50%. I calculated
WACC using those numbers and got a result of 8.49%.
Choose an Engine (see table 3)
There are two options for engines will be installed on buses. And so are the warranties. The
decision should be made according to engines quality, effectiveness, etc. But to investors, cost is
the main factor. In this case, Detroit engine has an installation cost of $20,000 and a warranty of
$1,000 each year for 5 years; the cost of installation of Marcus engine is $2,000 less but the
warranty is $1,500 per year. To figure out the cost I calculated the NPVs of each year for 20 years.
The NPVs of the warranties for each bus are same at the year it been produced. For example, the
warranty of a Detroit engine has a NPV of $4,276 in the year it been produced. (This method is
coming from Mr. Hasse. I used to combine the warranty for each year and use those numbers in
calculation.)
The NPV of installation cost and warranty of Detroit engine is $252,154,

Comparing Piaget And Vygotsky
There are many international theories with different perspectives based around early learning.
Jean Piaget and Lev Vygotsky are both theorists who based their theories on cognitive
development. Both were constructivists and believed that children have the ability to construct
their own knowledge. They believed that every child is an individual active learner however the
way they believed children construct their own knowledge differs. Vygotsky talked about
different zones of development. The zones were actual, proximal and future. The zone of actual
development is what the child is able to do independently, the zone of proximal is what the child
is able to do with help and the future is what the child will learn and carry on to do independently
once they have received the support they need. According to Meggitt, C, The zone of proximal
development (ZPD), sometimes called the zone of potential development this means that then
child can do with help now what it will be possible for him or her to do alone with no help later on

Thus, the king role would be used for many centuries following this invasion, but this would not be
true for loyalty within the community. Britannia may have been peaceful prior to invasion but was
not unified, the counties did not have any loyalty to each other which ended up being a weakness.
The Romans took advantage of this weakness they would then Divide and conquer: buy off the
Celtic kings that could be bought, use them as allies to destroy those who resisted (PowerPoint).
After the Roman s took over the British were more unified since they were all under one rule.
Which lasted for many years until Britannia was invaded by the Anglo Saxons, after that there was
no loyalty to each other. The Romans also altered their religion, the British went from a sun god to
God. Romanization was also known as Christianization because all areas Rome conquered became
Christian. Christianity survived to play an important role a century later in the conversion of the
Anglo Saxons (Roberts 21). It is even still today the main religion throughout most communities in
the world. The Romans were very serious about religion, there are still churches and mosaics of God
from this time period present. Buildings changed dramatically during Roman rule, from the exterior
to the interior many improvements were made. The architecture was classical, they put arches,
columns, capitals, entablatures, and pediments on the structures (Roberts 18). On the

Should Car Manufacturers Wear Seatbelt
CRASH! You just got into an accident because you were on your phone and not paying
attention, there is damage to your vehicle and theirs, guess what? You killed yourself by flying
through the windshield and hitting them, basically turning into a flying projectile, all because you
didn t wear a seatbelt.
Should car manufacturers create a system that prevents vehicles from operating without the seatbelt
being latched? Or is it up to the operaters to ensure there own safety? That is a very easy question
for me to answer.
Car manufacturers need to create a system for seatbelts so that all vehicle operaters have ensured
safety. If you do not wear a seatbelt when you are operating a vehicle you are a huge liability and
danger to everyone around you and also to yourself. Lets say for example you re driving on i 35 and
the car in front of you stops without any warning what so ever and you crash into them, you will
go flying out of the window and may hurt the driver in the other vehicle, like I said before you re a
flying prejectile waiting to kill anybody in the way. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

American Sniper Sarcasm
I think that American Sniper was a great book and it is now one of my all time favorites. I
especially liked how you explained the terms you used in the book. I did not know all the terms
you used, but with your explanations I was never confused after reading on. I also liked how you
made the reader feel like he or she was in the situation in the book. When discussing your battle
situations, you used lots of detail. This let the reader know exactly what you were talking about.
One other part I liked was the way you used sarcasm. Throughout the book your occasional
sarcasm made me laugh and keep reading. For all of these reasons, I will definitely be reading this
book again.
As I was reading, I came upon a couple questions I would like to

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Spermicides
Spermicidal agents: Vaginal spermicides consist of a base combined with either nonoxynol 9 or
octoxynol. The actual spermicidal agent consists of a surfactant that destroys the cell membrane of
sperm. Bases include vaginal foams, suppositories, jellies, films, foaming tablets, and creams.
These must be inserted into the vagina before each intercourse. Utilization of spermicidal agents
also reduces the possibility of infection by both viral and bacterial organisms that cause STDs;
however, clinical data on their efficacy for preventing the transmission of HIV are limited.

INTERNATIONAL TRADE AND INNOVATION
Submitted By: Muhammad Yousaf
Submitted To: Priit Vahter
Introduction
The trade liberalization can boost productivity by inducing a better allocation of production factors
or the adoption of more advanced technologies. The trade integration reallocates market shares
towards exporters, the most productive firms, increasing aggregate productivity. The resulting
increase in revenues can induce exporters to invest in new technologies. The major advantage of
Chinese trade had been lower prices for consumers in the developed world (Bloom et al. (2011)).
The further discussion about different searches could be found below.
Discussion
The major advantage of Chinese trade had been lower prices for consumers in the developed world.
The increased Chinese trade has induced faster technical change not only innovation but also
adoption of new technologies. Bloom et al. (2011) discover that the absolute volume of innovation
(not just per worker productivity or patents) increases within firms and industries more affected by
exogenous reductions in barriers to the country s imports.
The following three problems were discussed by Bloom et al. (2011). (i) The data from the last
decade used to examine the recent role of trade in affecting technical change in developed countries.
(ii) It has examined off shoring to China, and (iii) the impact of imports on patents, information

A Reflection On What Makes A Socially Intelligent Leader
In this paper, I will be writing a final reflection on what makes a socially intelligent leader. This
will include a reflection on the article called, Social Intelligence and the Biology of Leadership
written by Daniel Goleman and Richard Boyatzis. Additionally, I will identify my personal top ten
leader attributes and describe them. Lastly, I will discuss my plan for further self development to
align myself better with my leader attributes.
Goleman and Boyatzis write, ...certain things leaders do specifically, exhibit empathy and become
attuned to others moods literally affect both their own brain chemistry and that of their followers
(p. 76). This is a finding from research that shows how individual minds combine together to work
as a single system. This means that people who are great leaders have the ability to act with a
behavior that has an influential force on brain interconnectedness. Furthermore, being a leader is
more about developing an interest in people that will nurture positive feelings in them. This will
lead them to provide better cooperation and support back to the leader (Goleman Boyatzis, 2008, p.
76).
A typically leader is thought of a person who is in charge, controls others, assigns tasks, deadlines,
and often is not respected by peers because they are harsh and demanding. This type of leadership is
often unproductive both for the leader and the followers. They do not have a team environment and
often only trying to what is needed to just

We find ourselves amidst a struggle between our lifestyles and nature. Although we affect nature profoundly with our activities, we in turn are shaped by nature s potent forces. Nature can be brutal to humans, but we must remember that it merely is following its course. As a result, we must learn to coexist with it. Statistically, Malibu and its surrounding area has seen much damage done to its vegetation and inhabitants. There have been 24 wildfires that burned a total of 271,047 acres since 1927. These fires have caused a total of five deaths and the destruction of 1,502 homes along with 830 other structures. Recent fires include the Malibu fire in 1985, Dayton Fire in 1982 and Malibu Canyon fire in 1970. In the Malibu Fire, 103 homes were destroyed; in the Dayton Fire, 85 homes were destroyed. The Malibu Canyon Fire, which joined forces with the New Hall Fire on September 25, 1970, destroyed a total of 135 homes and burned through a total of 85,000 acres (Wildfire sec. 2 p.1). Out of all the homes burned, 70 were located in Malibu and 65 in Chatsworth (Wildfire sec. 2 p.1). Previous to that fire, the last time Topanga Canyon had seen a damaging fire was December 30, 1956, when 74 homes were destroyed (Wildfire sec. 3 p.1). This is likely shocking to most of you. Let me be clear by what I intend to convey by identifying as such. I do not mean to say I am opposed to religion, or claim there is no God. I still identify very much with LDS culture and attend church regularly. Rather, I identify as an atheist as a way to convey that I seem to have lost Faith that there is a God. Over the last year I have studied and ponder in depth to discover as best I could truth. Before I get there I want to be clear as to the perspective in which I am coming from. Mdh Assay Lab Report Enzymes are biological catalysts, usually made up of protein molecules that act on one or more specific substrates, converting them to products with different molecular structures. Malate Dehydrogenase (MDH) is one example of an enzyme that catalyzes oxaloacetic acid and NADH into malic acid and NAD+ as part of the citric cycle. In order to perform the MDH assay, a solution of pure MDH was collected from bovine heart. A control assay was performed, along with three experimental groups to test concentration, pH, and temperature. Units of activity were calculated and showed that all three variables have an effect on enzyme activity. MDH was shown to have an optimum pH, concentration, and temperature at which enzyme activity was at its highest... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was hypothesized that as the enzyme concentration increases, the reaction rate increases. Also that as the pH moves away, both increasing and decreasing, from the optimum pH (7.5) the reaction rate decreases. Lastly, as the temperature moves away, both increasing and decreasing, from the optimum temperature (37 oC) the reaction rate decreases. All of the results, as described below, were consistent with the hypothesis that was made. As the results show in Figure 1, as the concentration of enzymes is increased, the units of activity also increased with the maximum being 0.0622 Вµmol/min at 1X concentration. This may be because when the enzyme is in a higher concentration there is more catalyst present, causing the reaction rate to increase. As Figure 2 shows, altering the pH, either higher or lower, had a negative effect on the reaction rate. This indicates that the optimum pH for this reaction is approximately 7.5, giving a rate of 0.0622 Вµmol /min. It is possible that altering the pH to extreme highs or lows causes the configuration of the enzyme to be altered and inhibits the biochemical system. The results also show that temperature has an affect on the reaction ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

However, upon further exploration, this notion is found to be critically flawed. A victimless crime has been described as a situation in which a socially disapproved and legally proscribed exchange occurs with lack of apparent harm to others (Schur, 1965 cited in Roach Anleau, 2006). It is understood if a participant is willing and a lack of harm exists, the crimeis victimless. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the case of prostitution, this becomes more complicated. In order to determine whether there is a victim in prostitution, the concept of consent must be re examined. In Harding and Hamilton s study (2008), several prostitutes were asked whether they were forced into the act. All of the respondents stated they had felt coerced into sex work by their partners typically, abusive and violent men . It was suggested that many prostitutes suffer from a false consciousness where they are a victim, despite not identifying as one. (Harding Hamilton, 2008). Benson and Matthews (1995) support this claim concluding from their studies that although many believe prostitutes should be able to continue their freely chosen occupation unrestricted, the truth is that many battle from various forms of dependency. It appears prostitution is unlikely to be a free choice, rather, stems from desperation, abuse, control and coercion. Some of those involved in sex work may convince themselves they chose to do so in an attempt to exert some control over their lives and bodies (Harding Hamilton, 2008). Cubism by Pablo Picasso and George Braques During the beginning of the 20th century the world was developing at an unprecedented, intense speed, artists were looking for a new Avant garde way to create works. Hence, cubism came to life a truly revolutionary style of modern art developed by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braques (Lance 2010 :2). Many critics challenged this new style due to its unconventional use of semiotics and lack of social sense. However, this is exactly what Cubists wanted to be, unconventional challenging the traditions of Western art which they believed had become tired and run its course. As the world was developing and new inventions were being created such as the car, aeroplane , cinematography and the telephone. People like Picasso and Braque found it increasingly difficult to attempt to create works on the basis of these ideas. They believed that the modernity of these things and the society at the time was unable to be represented by the exhausted constraints of the conventional forms of representation which had been around since as early on as the Renaissance. Moving away from the traditional Western rules of what was suitable when creating art dadists and surrealists start to undermine artistic convention ( Freeman 1989 : 1) and in turn the cubists do to . Sulfurous gas from the volcanocombined with water vapor droplets in the air, which then stuck in earth s atmosphere, and were dispersed through both hemispheres due to stratospheric currents. These particles then increased sunlight absorption, contributing to lower amounts of sunlight seen from earth. This caused a drop in global temperatures by nearly 5.4 degrees fahrenheit. These temperature drops reached as far as New England, which caused difficulty in crop production and increased famine, leading to the year of 1816 being called the year without a summer. The initial impact of the eruption killed somewhere around 10,000 citizens instantly, while the chain of events afterwards, including food shortages, famine, pyroclastic flows, and tsunamis, caused an estimated 100,000 deaths. The massive eruption measured a 7 on the VEI scale, or Volcanic Explosivity Index, and released around 100 cubic km of magma. In total, it lasted no more than 3 days, and 300 500 million kilograms of volcanic debris was released per second. Stratovolcanoes produce magma that contain high amounts of silica, giving it a high viscosity, or thickness, causing it to not flow very far. 500,000 square kilometers of land around Tambora was covered with at least 1 centimeter of ash. Following the eruption, a collapse caldera was formed. These are formed when a powerful volcanic eruption occurs, and collapses in on the weak rock that had previously been supporting the magma chamber underneath the volcano, forming a crater. This caldera is now around 1.2 kilometers deep, meaning the volcano lost several kilometers of elevation following the eruption. It is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Power makes one feel as if that person was a God, which is a sign of the corruption in that individual. The second portion of Lord Actin?s quote discusses absolute power corrupting absolutely which implies that absolute power can corrupt an individual as well as the individual?s surroundings. Research and development costs are the costs that a company incurs to either improve its existing products and processes, or develop entirely new endeavors. Thus, as research and development costs are now inevitable for businesses in order to beat out competitors, it is important to understand the accounting treatment for these costs under the guidance of both GAAP and IFRS. Once these criteria are met, development costs can then be capitalized and amortized over a period of time and as a result, would show the recognition of the continuous benefit from the development costs that contributed to the asset. According to KPMG, the definition of what constitutes research costs versus development costs is very similar between IFRS and GAAP; however, neither provides a clear definition that easily differentiates the two categories (IFRS, 2017). Because of the different accounting treatment required, it is imperative that a company develops processes and controls that allow the distinction to be made based on the nature of different activities. This ensures the most accurate representation of research and development costs presented in the financial statements of an entity. Theogony And The Biblical Book Of Genesis, Hesiod And Genesis At first glance, the story of how it all began in Hesiod s Theogony, and in the Biblical book of Genesis reveals certain similarities that I picked up on. Hesiod and Genesis share the same order of events: mankind exists in alongside heavenly beings in utopia where there is just; a woman is introduced into this utopian world; the actions of the womanproduces the loss of before said utopia. This pattern is used by both works of literature to better explain the presence of problems such as chaos and turmoil in human existence, and both Hesiod and Genesis credit the first woman with these problems. (Genesis 3.16) But despite these similarities, Eve and Pandora are characteristically different. Unlike Pandora, Eve is not naturally evil. She was created from one of Adams ribs, making Eve of the same material and nature as her husband. Pandora, conversely, is basically different from man. I figured this because Hesiod does not give a significant story of how man came to be in these sections, but Pandora s attributes from the gods, including both her beauty and her deceitfulness, marks her as a separate individual. However, Eve is meant to be a companion for Adam, to say that Pandora was a gift is plainly ironic. This inconsistency is at the difference between the women. Pandora is a punishment for man. Theogony exposes this, by calling her evil for man or through the instance with the jar, which is an indicator of her deceitful nature. Neither work specifies if Pandora actually undergoes suffering alongside man. Eve, however, is a victim of her actions as much as Adam is, and these two suffer together, if not wholly in the same way. Despite their inherent differences, I do believe they are similar in how they are portrayed as the less significant sex. Despite Eve being created from Adam, she was not created of an entirely new framework such as Adam, as if she was not important enough to do so. Both Pandora and Eve were created secondly both ... Prostitution has a very large market that if legalized could be used as a source of revenue for governments through the form of taxes. So the focus will include how the prostitution market is generated, what parts make up the prostitution market, what profits are made from the prostitution market, and other such subjects related to the prostitution market. Research of Prostitution Prostitution is often considered to be one of the oldest professions in history. However, this kind of act is considered criminal by many societies and as such time is often served by those who are caught participating in the act of prostitution on either side. I did not know all the terms you used, but with your explanations I was never confused after reading on. I also liked how you made the reader feel like he or she was in the situation in the book. When discussing your battle situations, you used lots of detail. This let the reader know exactly what you were talking about. One other part I liked was the way you used sarcasm. This will include a reflection on the article called, Social Intelligence and the Biology of Leadership written by Daniel Goleman and Richard Boyatzis. Additionally, I will identify my personal top ten leader attributes and describe them. Lastly, I will discuss my plan for further self development to align myself better with my leader attributes. Goleman and Boyatzis write, ...certain things leaders do specifically, exhibit empathy and become attuned to others moods literally affect both their own brain chemistry and that of their followers (p. 76). This is a finding from research that shows how individual minds combine together to work as a single system. This means that people who are great leaders have the ability to act with a behavior that has an influential force on brain interconnectedness. Furthermore, being a leader is more about developing an interest in people that will nurture positive feelings in them. This will lead them to provide better cooperation and support back to the leader (Goleman Boyatzis, 2008, p. 76).
