Ambrose Bierce s An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge
Ambrose Bierce
Author, Ambrose Bierce, who is considered one of the Great American authors, wrote during the
realism period. Particularly, in his work titled An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, written in 1890,
we can see evidence of the characteristics, themes and style identified with the realism movement
which was extant in American letters between 1850 and 1900. As a representative of such a
movement, Ambrose Bierce, then remains on the most identifiable and iconic writers of his time.
Ambrose Bierce was born on June 24, 1842 in Meigs County, Ohio. He later disappeared in
Chihuahua, Mexico while traveling to gain first hand experience. It is believed that he died there at
around the year 1914. He grew up poor, but his parents, who were also writers, inspired him to create
a passion for reading and writing. Later on in his life, Bierce enlisted in the Union Army during the
American Civil war. One battle that really inspired Bierce to write short stories was the Battle of
Shiloh; from there, he wrote the memoir What I Saw of Shiloh . On ... Show more content on

upon his wife and children . The reality is he thinking of his family right before death. The man had
good intentions and good features; he had a straight nose, firm mouth, broad forehead, and combed
dark hair; the liberal military code made provision for hanging many kinds of persons, and gentlemen
were not included . This proves that realistically, no matter how kind a person is or seems to be, they
are not exempt from trouble. He soon unclosed his eyes and thought if I could free my hands...I might

Elimination Reactions
In this lab, the goal is to explore the idea of elimination reactions and investigate ways to synthesizes
alkynes. The product that will be produced is diphenylacetylene and this will be done by starting with
meso stilbene dibromide using elimination reactions. The balanced reaction is:
For an E2 reaction to occur, strong bases should be utilized for this lab since E2 reactions favor well
with strong bases. KOH is a strong base that is also acts as a strong nucleophile. This is because it
contains a hydroxyl group and they are both strong bases and nucleophiles.
Heat will also be applied to encourage the chemicals to go through the elimination reaction. There will
be two ways to apply heat so that the reaction can occur. The first way is through a thermal reaction
process using sand baths to heat the reaction. The other method of heating is to microwave the product
so that the elimination reaction can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Holistic Assessment Model
Holistic means treating the patient as a whole. The mind, spirit, and body must be addressed when
patients present with health problems or health seeking behaviors. It is essential to incorporate holism
in my daily nursing practice, because the patient feels that I truly care about them as a person instead
of just caring for their disease. The holistic model of health assessment must include the patient s
culture and values, family and social roles, self care behaviors, job related stress, developmental tasks,
and failures and frustration of life (Jarvis, 2012). Cultural consideration is vital in education,
compliance, and comfort of the patient.
The interview process is the most essential assessment tool to implement appropriate care of ... Show

Inspection, palpation, percussion, and auscultations are the assessment techniques needed for a
physical exam (Jarvis, 2012). I believe that a systematic approach assessment is important, because it
influences the implementation of quality management interventions.
Having excellent communication skills will help nurses to collect data accurately. Our ability to listen
and ask questions could enable us to obtain a good patient health history. Open and honest
communication is the best way to develop a relationship with the patient. The objective data is the
information that I can perceive using my own senses. On the hand, subjective data are based on the
patient s statement. Gathering an accurate, objective and subjective data could help the health care
team to generate the plan of care and in determining the etiology of the patient s problem.
Nursing documentation can provide a better communication between the health care team who are
involved in patient s care. Writing clear and concise documentation could help with continuity of care.
I will ensure to document all the findings that I collected from the interview assessment and the head

Recovery Persuasive Speech
It may seem like everyone and their uncle s mother has an iPhone or iPad, but for the most part, they
are objects of luxury. It s easy to forget the powerful technology that fits inside these little boxes and
we often treat it like something of lesser value. Because of that, it s common to lose track of them. It s
ok to be in denial of your shortcomings. A new device will help you get back on track in five simple

Lady Antebellum Analysis
Transcontinental Resonance with Lady Antebellum
It was a vernal early summer day in 2010, back in my high school classroom in China. I was doing a
presentation on the 52nd Grammy Awards for my English class project, with the playback of the show
on the projector. The entire class devotedly enjoyed the flamboyant Lady Gaga, the patriotic 21 Guns
by Green Day, the elegant Beyoncé, and the astounding whirling performance by Pink. The
performances on the Grammy s were intense, until a quiescent and soothing piano prelude gradually
emerged. The intro did not sound as intense as pop or rock music, neither did it sound like country
music in any sense. I was astonished, since virtually all the English songs I had heard of were pop,
except for those country songs from the youthful Taylor Swift. The impressionable prelude was
definitely a novelty for me, an ordinary high school student in China, who had not been exposed to a
variety of English music genres by any means, while the opening lyrics Picture perfect memories,

The vocal and harmony in the song sounded both familiar and fresh, with a hint of rock embedded in
the overall country rock style. It was a song that instantly became a favorite of mine once I heard it. I
was resonated by this song, even though I could not tell my exactly feeling at that time, and I did not
know it was Need You Now by Lady Antebellum until I searched the lyrics afterwards. One might be
dumbfounded by how such an American country band could resonate a high school student in the
other hemisphere, but it was a true manifestation of how Lady Antebellum could captivate listeners,
regardless of their background and familiarity with music. In this paper, I shall analyze how Lady
Antebellum have been an influential and unique country music group, with references to their musical
influences and how they have

Marketing Strategy Of Virgin Mobile
I. Problem Statement
Virgin Mobile needs not only an effective but profitable pricing strategy that will set the company
apart from the competition. With goals to have 1 million total subscribers by the end of the first year
and 3 million by year 4, Virgin Mobile has some high expectations with a limited budget. As a
company, Virgin Mobile wants to implement a pricing strategy that will attract and retain customers,
especially in a target market that has been underserved in the past.
II. Strategic Situation Facing Management in the Case
The market Virgin Mobile is trying to target is millennials, aging between 15 and 29. As of now, the
U.S. has the lowest penetration in the mobile industry within this age group, with a high growth rate ...

Current marketing strategies include a strong focus toward the youth market, and where they spend
most of their time. Advertisements will be aired on MTV, and products will be sold in places like
Target and Best Buy. These are all smart tactics to get the product in front of the target market. Trends
in the market include the growing number of people within the 15 29 age range. Also, phones are
being used for much more than just calling, other functions like texting and music playing capabilities
have dominated much of a user s data usage. As for market characteristics, the mobile industry has
reached almost 50% penetration with about 130 million subscribers, and reaching its maturity. The
cost structure has been very confusing for consumers, with hidden fees, overcharges, and lacks to
reward users who do not use their plans to the max. And finally, channels include all service provider
stores and retail consumer stores, for example, Target, Walmart, and Best Buy.
III. Strategic Alternatives Available to the Firm
There are three options to price the new Virgin Mobile line in the US. The first option involves setting
prices at the same level as the competition. The benefit of this option is the ease of implementation,
but the drawback is the lack of differentiation. Virgin Mobile will not be setting itself apart from other

The Roles Of Nero And The Legacy Of Emperor Nero
Emperor Nero, born Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus on December 15, 37, passed from this world June
9, 68 from a self inflicted stab wound to the throat. He is survived by his two wives and his loyal
slaves who helped him escape Rome before he was to be arrested and executed (Commire, 1994).
Those citizens of the Roman Empire that died prior to the arranged murder of Nero s mother,
Agrippina the Younger, would have known Nero as a kind and generous ruler who banned the death
penalty and reduced taxes. A progressive thinker, Emperor Nero even allowed slaves to report harsh
masters to the courts. He would also be remembered as a patron to the arts who began contests in
poetry, theater, and athletics to replace the blood sports that he had banned. ( Nero , 2017)
Unfortunately, history would not remember Nero so kindly. Beginning with the stabbing of his mother
in 59, the reign of Nero was to be one of scandal and tyranny. Unlucky in love, Nero had his wife/step
sister, Octavia, exiled and murdered in 62. He did this to pursue the affections of the wife of a senator,
Poppaea Sabina. After having forcing a divorce from her husband, they were happily married the
following year, 63. This marriage lasted for two years until Nero kicked Poppaea in the stomach,
while she was with child, that ultimately killed her (Commire, 1994). He then fixed upon the idea of
marrying Statilia Messalina and promptly had her husband killed. The following year, he also married

How To Build A Vacuum Trucks
Vacuum trucks are a gigantic suction machine. The negative pressure generated within the machine is
enough to suck up anything that fits the size of the suction hose, regardless of whether the material is
in a solid, liquid, or gaseous state. In a practical application, these trucks are commonly used for
cleaning sewage and drainage lines and even for hydraulic excavation. Although the equipment can
vacuum almost anything quickly, there are several things that an operator must learn in order to utilize
such equipment efficiently and safely. Maintaining Efficiency Although vacuum trucks can quickly
suction anything in its path, it takes a significant amount of energy to generate a strong vacuum;
therefore, it is important that the system ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There have been many cases where workers have suffered fatal injuries from operating this type of
equipment. Following are some of the ways that operators can work safely around such heavy duty
vehicles. Vigilance Working with a vacuum truck can easily create a false sense of security. That is
why it is important to always be aware of the dangers associated with these vehicles. It is important to
keep in mind that a vacuum force can be generated that could literally rip a person s limb off of a
body. During operation, always keep a safe distance from the suction tip and be aware of the location
of all emergency shut off features. Grounding Vacuuming can generate static electricity, which could
trigger a spark. If the material being suctioned has a flash point below 140 degrees, it could potentially
create an explosion. As a rule of thumb, a vehicle should be attached to a grounding point throughout
its operation. Chemical Reactions Chemical reactions may occur when combining two different
materials together, which could result in intense heat, the release of noxious gases, and even an
explosion. To avoid a chemical reaction, always clean the holding tank in between jobs that involve
different liquids and other material; maintain a record of the materials being

His tax preparer charges him $240 to prepare his annual tax return, as shown on line 22. He also owns

Myth And Archetype In Le Guin s The Nether
According to Le Guin s Myth is an expression of one of the several ways the human being,
body/psyche, perceives, understands, and relates to the world (Le Guin 69). Generally, this sentence
assumes that myth and science are similar because they are both created by an individual s
understanding ability. Le Guin concludes that it is impossible to replace a myth since humans are more
likely to believe something rather than fully understand it. The play The Nether which is written by
Jennifer Haley is somehow connecting to Le Guin s work. From her virtual world, she leads viewers
to think about some ethical issues that difficult to solve. The play s setting is based on the near future,
an era when people exist as avatars so they are able to engage in any experience or occasion
(Margolies 185). The content of myth and Archetype can be used to analyze Haley s virtual world. The
Nether agrees to the theoretical text that science ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This appears when the author makes the audience to conceptualize sexual abuse on the young girl.
Oddly, the sexual violation of the girl attracted a lot of viewer s attention. Oppositely, in the real world
people would take steps to prevent this. This scene takes the viewers values from the virtual world
back to reality, even though viewers remained in the virtual existence. The depiction of immorality in
the Hideaway confers the theoretical text that creatures portrayed in myths or science fiction can be
accepted gradually from the society (LeGuin 76). For the argument, both the audience and Morris
keep questioning themselves whether the performances being done meet the moral standards of the
society or not. Another aspect is how Haley precisely develops archetypes, she catches the audiences
mindset to the virtual existence and leaves them with numerous ethical questions while going back to

Fast Food Advertising and Childhood Obesity
Fast Food Advertising And Childhood Obesity
A rise in obesity has been observed in the United States in the last two decades. Obesity is one
problem that gives birth to numerous fatal diseases, including but not limited to cardiovascular
disease, diabetes, and depression. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) conducted a
survey and found that, More than one third of U.S. adults (35.7%) and approximately 17% (or 12.5
million) of children and adolescents aged 2 19 years are obese (Ogden, Carroll). One of the main
reasons behind obesity is the American s love for fast food. Fast food contains only a small proportion
of essential nutrients, and is loaded with unhealthy and non essential nutrients which do nothing but ...

The similar advertising bans already exist in some jurisdictions such as in Quebec (Canada) and few
Scandinavian countries (Dhar, Baylis 7). Sweden, Norway, and Finland have banned commercial
sponsorship of children s programs. Sweden also does not permit any television advertising targeting
children under the age of twelve (Role of Media). Quebec s 32 years ban on advertising to children
had led to $88 million annual reduction in expenditures on fast food and 13.4 billion to 18.4 billion
fewer fast food calories being consumed per year (Dhar, Baylis 2 10). Residents of Quebec have a
very sedentary life, yet their obesity rate is comparatively lesser than the US. These figures indicate
that the sanction on fast food advertisement can prove effective in lowering or curbing fast food
consumption in the United States as well. A larger proportion of the US population leads a very active
life. An active life combined with the proper and healthy diet may lead to significant reduction in the
obesity rates. Media and entertainment giant Walt Disney Co s has already banned junk food
advertisements during its TV, radio and other online programs intended for children under the age of
12 (Heavey).
Lawmakers and other opponents of this campaign may not agree to the effects of advertising on
children and may

Example Of Intertextuality In Literature
Reality, as people often point out, is an ongoing, live soap opera in which the cast and roles depend on
perspective and the storyline on history. Literature, on the other hand, boasts a world of magic and
possibility. It exists as an interactive universe where a story can go in one direction and a thousand
directions all at once. Such a world is made possible by Intertextuality, the use of old, malleable
literature to create new literature by either alluding to the former to bring to light a revelatory hidden
message or exploring the consequences of a twist on a classic. William Golding s Lord of The Flies,
Stephanie Meyer s The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner, and ABC Family s Once Upon A Time are a
few examples of works that have helped me gain a better understanding of Intertextuality and the
effect of its use. Intertextuality allows works and their essences to remain timeless. Whereas a classic
is restricted to the words included on the pages, newer books have the freedom to expand the life
altering concepts presented in these classics and make them relevant to ... Show more content on

The ABC Family s popular T.V. show, Once Upon A Time, portrays the story of a town called
Storybrooke where fairytale characters are imprisoned without their memories from the enchanted
forest but with one hope, the Savior, Emma Swan. As can be noticed, the show, using the principle of
Intertextuality, reinvents the common understanding of Fairytale Land and the essence of each
intertwined story but maintains each character s basic, recognizable identity. In fact, one of the
episodes is an adaptation of the tale of Jack and the Beanstalk in which Jack is actually female, and
climbs up the stalk with an army to murder the giants but ultimately dies of blood loss. This deviation

Nikki Giovanni s Kidnap Poem Imagery
Kidnap by Nikki Giovanni is a short poem about referring to her lover whom she has great desires to
be with. Giovanni wants her lover to return to her or to continue staying with her and shows her
devotion for her lover through this poem. With Nikki Giovanni s use of repetition, imagery, and
metaphor, the purpose of this poem is to captive the reader s mind through her words. Giovanni s use
of imagery in this poem appeals to the readers senses and shows readers that poetry can take them to
different places. This poem expresses a tone of emotion and love. Giovanni tries to draw in the readers
using mixed and conflicting emotions.
First off, diction, structure, and genre are the foundations to any poem. Giovanni speaks in first person

hearing the lyre or love songs, and from the feeling of dry to wet. These types of imagery takes the

How Did Elvis Presley Influence Society
Elvis Aaron Presley, otherwise known as The King was born on January 8th, 1935. He came from
simple beginnings; being born into a lower class family in Tupelo, Mississippi. In 1948, at the age of
13 Elvis Presley and his family moved to Memphis, Tennessee. Soon he launched his incredibly
successful music career with Sun Records at the age of 19 in 1954. His music was influenced by both
African American and White artists causing his unique blend of country, pop, rhythm and blues, and
gospel music. Presley was heavily influenced by artists such as Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, and Buddy
Holly. Though Presley was widely known for his provocative dances moves and his popularization of
Rock n Roll Presley impacted American culture in a much larger aspect. His influence on Americans
and American culture aided desegregation and civil rights during his period of influence and helped
create youth culture . Presley facilitated desegregation through his music genre and selection. He did
this by creating music for both Black and White listeners integrating the two music genres. For
instance, Elvis Presley s first single released in July of 1954 began his career of integrating Black and
White music. This record contained a cover of That s All Right an R B song which was originally
written and recorded by the African American artist Arthur Crudup on side A. While side B was a
recording of a cover of the bluegrass song Blue Moon of Kentucky by the white artist Bill Monroe.
This representation showed the American people that both Black and White culture could live side by
side beautifully. This record also displayed the beginning Presley s attitude and complete disregard for
segregation. This portrayal of mixing these cultures came at an especially tense time in American
history. Two months before Presley released these songs the case of Brown Vs. Board of Education
had come to a ruling. The Brown Vs. Board of Education case was a case filed against the Topeka,
Kansas school board because a Black child was denied access to a White school. The plaintiff argued
that the segregated schools were separate but not equal and violated the equal protection clause in the
14th amendment. In May of 1954 the U.S. Supreme Court

his latest work, What it Look Like, Terrance Hayes use of style, cultural context, symbolism and his
use of stereotypes makes this poem one of his most elegant pieces, that can reach communities with

In his Federalist Paper 10, Madison refers to the word factions numerous times. A faction is a small,
organized, dissenting group within a larger one in politics. Madison believes factions cause problems
among other different factions because they the majority always wins. If Madison were alive today, he
would see both political parties as factions. He would also view different unions and organizations as

together to promote their community as a faction. Madison also explores the causes and sources of
factions in his essay. He states that the causes of a faction can be regarded to the nature of men. This is

that ideas within their material could offend or emotionally harm them. While they are being
implemented across the country, their effects on students are proving to be more harmful than helpful
because they often hinder students education rather than further develop it. Applying trigger warnings
may cause professors to choose to negatively alter their material in order to attempt to teach it without

They allow a colleges to coddle students. One instance of this can come from the article Con: Trigger
Warnings Impose Censorship in the Name of Sensitivity. Donald A. Downs, author and professor of
political science, law, and journalism at the University of Wisconsin, explains how trigger warnings
can negatively affect students. Downs states, Education should expose students to the depths of the
human condition, which unavoidably involves matters of good and evil, life and death. He then
claims, Trigger warnings assume that many students are not capable of handling the responsibilities of
adult citizenship. Students cannot possibly be expected to mentally or emotionally grow when they are
constantly being sheltered from the real world and all of its sometimes painful disputes. Trigger
warnings cater to the sensitive students and grant them no room to grow up on their own. Many
colleges are being overwhelmed by the positive effects that may come with trigger warnings, they
should heavily consider the negative ones as well. Enforcing trigger warnings in hopes of furthering
college education would unleash a surge of flaws into a school. Though trigger warnings may have
few upsides, if put into action they will prove themselves to be destructive to a school s learning

Swot Analysis Of Schneider Electric
Schneider Electric Mergers and Acquisitions Strategy
Schneider Electric is an aggressive company when it comes to mergers and acquisitions. It reserves
part of its entire revenue every year to fund and reinforce its strategy in this area, and has constantly
acquired companies throughout its history. Pre 2000 Acquisitions Schneider Electric started as a
wartime armaments provider before refocusing itself onto the electrical industry in postwar Europe. It
separated from the iron and steel industry to do so. It acquired Telemecanique in 1988, Square D in
1991, Merlin Gerin in 1992, and Lexel in 1999. These acquisitions mark the transition of SE s
industry focus from construction to electrical equipment. Advantages These strategic acquisitions
helped Schneider gain advantages in the fields of circuit breakers and switchgear. Telemechanique for
example, was the inventor of the first switch and already had patents in their name when SE acquired
them. They were already present in 11 European countries and the United States by the time the
acquisition happened in 1988. This gave SE geographic advantages in circuit breaker industry as well.

Boat Project
The boat project was an enjoyable one. This project was able to test many abilities of the average
student including teamwork and preparation. It also offered insight on what exactly what was and
wasn t good for different parts of the boat, but throughout the next few paragraphs a few items will be
discussed. These items will include different designs of a boat whether they are good or bad, buoyant
force, specific propeller types, and efficiency, the end/test results of Steven. There were many ideas
expressed, on what qualities that applied to a boat, were good or bad, and because the motors that had
to be used were fairly weak, even more issues were said throughout the classroom. These issues

A propeller that was commonly used on the boats was the simplest two appendaged dorsal placed in
the above the water. This propeller s was long in height and shorter in width. Another frequent dorsal
was the propeller placed under water with some sort of cage to keep it stable. This propeller had a very
short diameter and a larger width compared to the first propeller. Also, the appendages were curved in
order for the water to be caught and thrust through the propeller. Efficiency is the ratio of work out
over work in. In electrical systems, electrical forces are applied in order to charge objects and
essentially move them. In this project s case the work in is the rotating motor, and the work out is the
force of the propeller. Every student had the same work in, but different work outs due to the different
propeller sizes and types. The work in was the same because each one was given the same type of
motor. It was supplied by two double A batteries and produced very little force to work with, but in the
end made was a fairly good supplier for the small homemade

Katy Perry s Cultural Appropriation Of Geishas
Perry s appropriator behavior revealed her ignorance. And because of this, her Geisha style
performance has deepened people s misunderstanding to the geishas. Katy Perry neglected the origin
meaning of geishas and alter the costumes unadvisedly, which expanded people s mix of Chinese and
Japanese culture. Furthermore, Katy Perry s behavior misleads people. Most of the Westerns consider
geishas as prostitutes because of the cultural difference. A typical example can be seen in the
conversation between O Reilly and Goldberg when they discussed Katy Perry s appropriation.
Goldberg said, a geisha is a woman who was subservient to men. A geisha tries to please men and
make them happy . However, it is not true. As Julia Layton states in his article ... Show more content

In fact, the charges of cultural appropriation are being hurled at every corner on the Unite. States: the

have met some appreciation in my life. As Ellison s opinion, the majority of cultural appropriation
occurs during Halloween, when people think it s acceptable to don offensive dress. Many put on
blackface, or brownface, as part of their costumes. Others simply come up with costumes meant to
insult and demean another ethnicity or culture . During the last Halloween, I met some white people
who wore in ninja outfits in college during the Halloween. However, the outfits they wore actually did
not show the real meaning of ninja. They merely cosplayed the characters of a Japanese animation
named NARUTO. The real ninja is masked, and wear in black and looks low key. Nonetheless, the
costumes they wore in were more colorful and various. Those people do not really understand the
histories of ninja, the reason why they wore in ninja outfits was simply, they thought it was
interesting. Their behavior is similar to what Katy Perry has did. They altered others cognition to ninja
as well. They may not tend to do it, but it was no denying that they appropriated from Japanese
culture. Nowadays the phenomenon is common in Unite. States. However, nothing could be the
excuse of neglecting other cultures and adopting them in an insensible manner. It is important to note
that appreciation involves respect and value. It s okay to find things beautiful. It s better to appreciate
it and learn more about it. Especially before you put an article of clothing on. Understanding the
cultures sufficiently and avoiding appropriation are imperative before applying it. Otherwise, one s
ignorance would be revealed and shows rudeness. In a word, the situation of cultural appropriation

My Leadership Philosophy
With regards to leadership, my strength lies in my desire to help everyone. A leader has to put the
group first and make every decision with that principle in mind. When freshman approach me in the
hallway, eyes wide with terror and uncertainty, I stop and ask them what they need. If the track team
needs and extra runner for a race, even if I despise that race, I ll step up. My philosophy is to lead by
example, not by command. I ve found that simply telling people what to do is the most ineffective
way to actually get them to do it. For example, I am very passionate about track and want the track
team to do extremely well at state this year. Instead of giving a rousing speech about courage and
strength, I started training months in advance. By making myself better, I encourage others to be better
too. I m not the best on the team by a longshot, but by working hard I inspire others to be better than
me. My goal by the end of track season is not to be the best on the team, but for the rest of the team to
be better because of me. By doing that extra lap I hope to inspire others to do the same. ... Show more

Vasopressin Hormone Research Paper
The author Julianna Kettlewell, a BBC News Online science staff member, uploaded an article on
Wednesday June 16, 2004 which gives us information on how a new gene can alter the Don Juan of
voles to go from not caring for their wives or children to an excellent home loving husband. She
describes how a new gene called vasopressin boosts pair bonding in voles. Before this experiment, the
prairie voles would not have sentimental relationships with their partners and have multiple partners at
once, likely due to the fact that scientists found that the voles had little vasopressin (V1a) receptors in
their forebrain, known as the ventral pallidum region. Scientists hypothesized that if they would inject
these vasopressin hormones into the forebrain section they would get a taming effect and make a

They were afraid that the social structure that placed them above blacks was going to crumble, leaving

The Great Gatsby- Color Symbolism
The Power of Color Colors are used many different ways by many different people, but are used
mainly as a reflection of the way one feels or his or her own personality. This idea is depicted through
the different characters created in F. Scott Fitzgerald s The Great Gatsby, set in the post World War I
era. The novel evinces the major themes through the use and explanation of many diverse colors. Jay
Gatsby, the most significant character in the story, leads a very materialistic lifestyle. Hoping to gain

now, to Nick. While gold and silver are two valuable colors to the characters, gray symbolizes the
corruption behind the money. One depressing color that is quite significant to the story happens to be
the very dull gray. Gray represents the neutral, dull and corrupt society that resides in America. It is
seen, through some of the structures, that corruption has made a big impact on everyone surrounding
them. One such structure, that is only mentioned briefly, is the villages in France. When Nick first
meets and talks to Gatsby, they bring up how both men look familiar to one another. Ironically, they
both took part in some section of World War I, Gatsby, in the ninth machine gun battalion, and Nick,
in the Seventh Infantry (Fitzgerald 47). During the quick recapitulation of the war, [they] talked for a
moment about some wet, gray little villages in France (Fitzgerald 47). These villages represent the
corruption and destruction that the war has brought to the people and society of France. Another gray
structure is the windows at Gatsby house. Even though Gatsby is a man of money and success, the
gray windows on his home signify that this happiness is just a facade, and that in reality, there is much

FINANCIAL PLANNING AND CONTROL
Part One
I. Overview of the Planning Process A long term financial plan begins with strategy. Typically, the
senior management team conducts an analysis of the markets in which the firm competes. Managers
try to identify ways to protect and increase the firm s competitive advantage in those markets. For
example, the first priority of a firm that competes by achieving the lowest production cost in an
industry might be to determine whether it should make additional investments in manufacturing
facilities to achieve even greater production efficiencies. Of course, being the low cost producer is
difficult if the firm s fixed assets are chronically underutilized. This type of firm therefore will spend a

As a firm grows, it must invest in new assets to support increased sales volume. The investments in
new assets must be financed with some combination of increased liabilities and increasesd equity.
Interpreting the Sustainable Growth Model
The model does not say anything about how fast the firm should grow but it gives ideas on how a firm
can benefit using this concept: The primary advantage of the sustainable growth is its simplicity. The
sustainable growth model gives managers a kind of shorthand projection that ties together growth
objectives and financing needs. It provides hints about the levers that managers must pull to achieve
growth above the sustainable rate. It also identifies some of the financial benefits of growing more
slowly than the sustainable rate. The concept also highlights tensions that can develop as firms pursue
multiple objectives simultaneously.

Essay On What Led Up To The Civil War Dbq
During the period of 1820 1840, the Industrial Revolution created a transparent divide between the
Northern and Southern regions. Evidently, the Industrial Revolution proposed change in the Northern
way of life to a more opportunistic environment, but the Southern regions remained the same
encompassed by the use of slavery for their own benefit. Moral tensions arose from the complications
between the two regions, creating abolitionist groups and extremists to dictate an impending battle
between the North and South. The Civil War was an inevitable feat due to northern extremism and the

Diversity flourished in the performing arts as well as in music, literature, and art. By the time the
novels, poetry, and dramas of the Harlem Renaissance were being recognized, African American
music had already gained fame worldwide. Jazz and blues provided the background, the spirit, and the
style for the achievements of the period s literary and visual artists (Howes 81). In every movement
there are those who are called front runners or foundation layers. These individuals pave the way for
others to follow and so it was with the Halrem Renaissance. Contrary to popular belief, the Harlem
Renaissance did not emerge out of a literary and cultural wasteland (Brown pg 9). The writers of the
Renaissance dealt with African American life from a African American perspective. The first
important writer of the Renaissance was Claude McKay (1889 1948), who was born in Jamaica and
came to the United States in 1912. McKay is best remembered for his poems treating racial themes.
His novel Home to Harlem became the first best seller by an African American author and he received

The Case of Kelo v. City of New London
Eminent Dominant According to the facts, it seems that the sentiment of John (Cougar) Mellencamp s

stated that the local government or federal government was entitled to exercise eminent dominant
rules to enable them acquire private property and utilize it for purposes of economic development.
Eminent domain also referred to as condemnation, is the act of taking private property and making it
public property by the local governing authority, state, or federal government (Bradley 65). The
private property taken away is converted to public property for public use. With reference to the case
of the Kelo v. city of New London, the court ruled that the government should take private property
through eminent domain for public use. This is due to the provisions of Fifth Amendment of the U.S
constitution. New London, Connecticut, could exercise eminent domain for economic development.
New London, Connecticut, was experiencing hard economic times majorly due to the closure of the
U.S. Naval Undersea Warfare Center, which was the major employer in the region. This prompted a
decrease in the tax base and population in general. This made the city leaders desperate for some
development in the city s economy. Afterwards, a pharmaceutical giant Pfizer started to construct a

Which Jurisdiction Should Govern The Agreement Between The...
The issues are what jurisdiction shall be used to govern the deal between the parties, issues with the
formation of the agreement, warranties, warranty damages, consequential damages, search costs, lost
profits, recession. The first issue is determining which jurisdiction should govern the agreement
between the parties Article 2 of the Uniform Commercial Code, the Common law, or the CISG? When
the subject matter of a transaction is for the sale of goods, Article 2 of the UCC is used to analyze the
deal between the parties. Article 2 of the UCC governs the formation, performance, and damages.
When the subject matter of the transaction is not for the sale of goods or is to provide a service, the
common law is used to analyze the deal between the parties. The Common law governs formation,
performance, and damages. When the transaction is for non consumer goods and between parties from
different nations, the Contracts for the International Sale of Goods is used to govern the transaction.
The CISG governs formation, performance, and damages. In this case, the party s agreement would be
considered a hybrid contact as the agreement includes a goods component, as well as a service
component. Since the agreement between the parties is a hybrid contract we can use the Predominate

year old annual report. JetBlue has grown substantially since 2005 and Neeleman since has been
replaced by Dave Barger as CEO ( JetBlue Annual Report, 2010). Barger could expand on the
Neelman s vision and offer the following vision in 2011: JetBlue s vision is one of continual emphasis
on providing competitive rates for customers for all of our destinations. We will strive to maintain our
industry standard lowest cost per mile, and will continually seek new strategies and technologies that
keep down the costs for every one of our flight routes. We foresee JetBlue as a value driven leader,

Military Industrial Complex in Vietnam
On 26 July 1950, President Harry Truman approved a multi million dollar military assistance package
designed to help the French defeat a strong communist movement in French Indochina. The package
included $15 million worth of military equipment and a small number of American military advisors
assigned to supervise the flow of tanks, plans, artillery, and other equipment.1 By 1954, the United
States government had provided 80% of the war supplies used by the French in Indochina which
equated to about $3 billion.2 This marked the beginning of the United States involvement in Southeast
Asia and the expansion of the military industrial complex in America. This paper will explore the role
the American military industrial complex played as part ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But much of this fear was driven by American newspapers. In 1951, Charles E. Wilson praised the
American Newspaper Publishers Association for basically convincing the free world that they were in
constant danger. Wilson also told the group that because of this perceived danger, Congress was now
able to budget vast sums of money to avert it.10 At the advent of the 1960s, Eisenhower s definition of
the military industrial complex had fundamentally been altered by President John F. Kennedy.
Kennedy, along with Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara, consolidated the military industry
process and set up controls similar to that of a major corporation.11 As Commander in Chief, Kennedy
resisted pressure from senior military advisors to send additional troops into Vietnam. Kennedy s
desire was to have all troops out of Southeast Asia by 1965.12 These beliefs were reinforced by the
failures of the Bay of Pigs operation in 1961 and the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. Kennedy had no
desire to escalate the Cold War which was contrary to what the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Central
Intelligence Agency wanted. By refusing to go to war, Kennedy was also reducing the possibility of
greater profits for many defense contractors. Despite the Warren Commission s conclusion that Lee
Harvey Oswald acted alone in assassinating Kennedy, the speculation that the CIA or members of the
military industrial complex were somehow

Challenges In Night By Elie Wiesel
During the Holocaust they counted that 6 million Jews died. The Jews faced many difficulties, death
being the main one. In the book Night by Elie Wiesel, he told his story of the difficulties he faced
during the Holocaust. The Nazis were horrible to the Jews; they gave them little food, made them
march many miles, worked them long hard hours, and when on the train they had little air. Because
Elie Wiesel overcame his difficulties he faced during the Holocaust, I feel I can overcome my
problems and live a wonderful life.
many times during the book it talks about Wiesel s problems. Elie s first problem would be when he
was in Buna, a concentration camp. This was a problem for Wiesel because he didn t have food, water,
and at sometimes air. In the book Elie says At ten o clock we were given our daily ration of bread
(Wiesel 34 ). This quote shows how that they only got bread once a day from their SS Officers, and
that they didn t have food. Another problem Wiesel had is the loss of family. Elie got taken away from
his mom and sister when they were deported on the train but got to stay with his father. Elie says I
certainly do. But on one condition: I want to stay with my father (Wiesel 35). With Elie being taken
away from his mom and sister, he wanted to stay with his father through the whole thing. Wiesel s
father was his strength to stay alive. Elie had tough adversities he had to go through in his life and he
was strong and overcame them.

  • 7. Lady Antebellum Analysis Transcontinental Resonance with Lady Antebellum It was a vernal early summer day in 2010, back in my high school classroom in China. I was doing a presentation on the 52nd Grammy Awards for my English class project, with the playback of the show on the projector. The entire class devotedly enjoyed the flamboyant Lady Gaga, the patriotic 21 Guns by Green Day, the elegant Beyoncé, and the astounding whirling performance by Pink. The performances on the Grammy s were intense, until a quiescent and soothing piano prelude gradually emerged. The intro did not sound as intense as pop or rock music, neither did it sound like country music in any sense. I was astonished, since virtually all the English songs I had heard of were pop, except for those country songs from the youthful Taylor Swift. The impressionable prelude was definitely a novelty for me, an ordinary high school student in China, who had not been exposed to a variety of English music genres by any means, while the opening lyrics Picture perfect memories, scattered ... One might be dumbfounded by how such an American country band could resonate a high school student in the other hemisphere, but it was a true manifestation of how Lady Antebellum could captivate listeners, regardless of their background and familiarity with music. In this paper, I shall analyze how Lady Antebellum have been an influential and unique country music group, with references to their musical influences and how they have ... Current marketing strategies include a strong focus toward the youth market, and where they spend most of their time. Advertisements will be aired on MTV, and products will be sold in places like Target and Best Buy. These are all smart tactics to get the product in front of the target market. Trends in the market include the growing number of people within the 15 29 age range. Also, phones are being used for much more than just calling, other functions like texting and music playing capabilities have dominated much of a user s data usage. As for market characteristics, the mobile industry has reached almost 50% penetration with about 130 million subscribers, and reaching its maturity. The cost structure has been very confusing for consumers, with hidden fees, overcharges, and lacks to reward users who do not use their plans to the max. • 9. The Roles Of Nero And The Legacy Of Emperor Nero Emperor Nero, born Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus on December 15, 37, passed from this world June 9, 68 from a self inflicted stab wound to the throat. He is survived by his two wives and his loyal slaves who helped him escape Rome before he was to be arrested and executed (Commire, 1994). Those citizens of the Roman Empire that died prior to the arranged murder of Nero s mother, Agrippina the Younger, would have known Nero as a kind and generous ruler who banned the death penalty and reduced taxes. A progressive thinker, Emperor Nero even allowed slaves to report harsh masters to the courts. He would also be remembered as a patron to the arts who began contests in poetry, theater, and athletics to replace the blood sports that he had banned. ( Nero , 2017) Unfortunately, history would not remember Nero so kindly. Beginning with the stabbing of his mother in 59, the reign of Nero was to be one of scandal and tyranny. Unlucky in love, Nero had his wife/step sister, Octavia, exiled and murdered in 62. He did this to pursue the affections of the wife of a senator, Poppaea Sabina. After having forcing a divorce from her husband, they were happily married the following year, 63. This marriage lasted for two years until Nero kicked Poppaea in the stomach, while she was with child, that ultimately killed her (Commire, 1994). Grounding Vacuuming can generate static electricity, which could trigger a spark. If the material being suctioned has a flash point below 140 degrees, it could potentially create an explosion. As a rule of thumb, a vehicle should be attached to a grounding point throughout its operation. Chemical Reactions Chemical reactions may occur when combining two different materials together, which could result in intense heat, the release of noxious gases, and even an explosion. Myth And Archetype In Le Guin s The Nether According to Le Guin s Myth is an expression of one of the several ways the human being, body/psyche, perceives, understands, and relates to the world (Le Guin 69). Generally, this sentence assumes that myth and science are similar because they are both created by an individual s understanding ability. Le Guin concludes that it is impossible to replace a myth since humans are more likely to believe something rather than fully understand it. The play The Nether which is written by Jennifer Haley is somehow connecting to Le Guin s work. From her virtual world, she leads viewers to think about some ethical issues that difficult to solve. The play s setting is based on the near future, an era when people exist as avatars so they are able to engage in any experience or occasion (Margolies 185). • 14. Example Of Intertextuality In Literature Reality, as people often point out, is an ongoing, live soap opera in which the cast and roles depend on perspective and the storyline on history. Literature, on the other hand, boasts a world of magic and possibility. It exists as an interactive universe where a story can go in one direction and a thousand directions all at once. Such a world is made possible by Intertextuality, the use of old, malleable literature to create new literature by either alluding to the former to bring to light a revelatory hidden message or exploring the consequences of a twist on a classic. William Golding s Lord of The Flies, Stephanie Meyer s The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner, and ABC Family s Once Upon A Time are a few examples of works that have helped me gain a better understanding of Intertextuality and the effect of its use. The Great Gatsby- Color Symbolism The Power of Color Colors are used many different ways by many different people, but are used mainly as a reflection of the way one feels or his or her own personality. This idea is depicted through the different characters created in F. Scott Fitzgerald s The Great Gatsby, set in the post World War I era. The novel evinces the major themes through the use and explanation of many diverse colors. Jay Gatsby, the most significant character in the story, leads a very materialistic lifestyle. Hoping to gain back his old love, Daisy, Gatsby uses his money to impress her, hopefully leading to their settling down together. Daisy s second cousin once removed, Nick Carraway, is the link that helps to connect Gatsby and Daisy. Nick deliberately ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Caught in the romantic atmosphere of the night, Nick puts [his] arm around Jordan s golden shoulder (Fitzgerald 79). Both description serve to symbolize the fact that she is happy and quite valuable, as of now, to Nick. While gold and silver are two valuable colors to the characters, gray symbolizes the corruption behind the money. One depressing color that is quite significant to the story happens to be the very dull gray. Gray represents the neutral, dull and corrupt society that resides in America. It is seen, through some of the structures, that corruption has made a big impact on everyone surrounding them. One such structure, that is only mentioned briefly, is the villages in France. When Nick first meets and talks to Gatsby, they bring up how both men look familiar to one another. Ironically, they both took part in some section of World War I, Gatsby, in the ninth machine gun battalion, and Nick, in the Seventh Infantry (Fitzgerald 47). During the quick recapitulation of the war, [they] talked for a moment about some wet, gray little villages in France (Fitzgerald 47). These villages represent the corruption and destruction that the war has brought to the people and society of France. Another gray structure is the windows at Gatsby house. Even though Gatsby is a man of money and success, the gray windows on his home signify that this happiness is just a facade, and that in reality, there is much fraudulence hidden within Gatsby ... • 30. Financial Planning FINANCIAL PLANNING AND CONTROL Part One I. Overview of the Planning Process A long term financial plan begins with strategy. Typically, the senior management team conducts an analysis of the markets in which the firm competes. Managers try to identify ways to protect and increase the firm s competitive advantage in those markets. For example, the first priority of a firm that competes by achieving the lowest production cost in an industry might be to determine whether it should make additional investments in manufacturing facilities to achieve even greater production efficiencies. Of course, being the low cost producer is difficult if the firm s fixed assets are chronically underutilized. This type of firm therefore will spend a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The investments in new assets must be financed with some combination of increased liabilities and increasesd equity. The sustainable growth model gives managers a kind of shorthand projection that ties together growth objectives and financing needs. It provides hints about the levers that managers must pull to achieve growth above the sustainable rate. It also identifies some of the financial benefits of growing more slowly than the sustainable rate. The concept also highlights tensions that can develop as firms pursue multiple objectives simultaneously. • 32. Essay On What Led Up To The Civil War Dbq During the period of 1820 1840, the Industrial Revolution created a transparent divide between the Northern and Southern regions. Evidently, the Industrial Revolution proposed change in the Northern way of life to a more opportunistic environment, but the Southern regions remained the same encompassed by the use of slavery for their own benefit. Moral tensions arose from the complications between the two regions, creating abolitionist groups and extremists to dictate an impending battle between the North and South. The Civil War was an inevitable feat due to northern extremism and the differing perspectives of proper leadership of both sides. Extremism became a significant issue during the time leading up to the Civil War. Northerners established ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Both regions believed their ideals were proper therefore causing this type of leadership as inconceivable at the time. Northern candidate, Abraham Lincoln was a strong proponent towards the unification of America whether it appeased the northern abolitionists or the southern plantation owner (Doc 4). Similarly Stephen Douglas proposed the idea of popular sovereignty as a means to unify the nation (Doc 5) . His ideals were more similar to the great compromisers Clay, Webster, and Calhoun who were deceased. All five of these men had one goal, to unify America, but the conflicting perspectives between Lincoln and Douglas lead to a stalemate, in which no decision was made to save the country. Thus the American Civil War became not an if but when? In a time of crisis, Congress did not prove to be a beneficiary towards the rehabilitation of the American Union. Indicated by the census of the two houses between 1849 1861, many decisions would become biased towards the Democratic Party due to their representation in government (Doc 3). Rather than coming to a consensus about the issue at hand, congress establishes an invisible line that indicates the divided North and South as free or slave states, fixating the battle between the North and ... By the time the novels, poetry, and dramas of the Harlem Renaissance were being recognized, African American music had already gained fame worldwide. Jazz and blues provided the background, the spirit, and the style for the achievements of the period s literary and visual artists (Howes 81). In every movement there are those who are called front runners or foundation layers. These individuals pave the way for others to follow and so it was with the Halrem Renaissance. Contrary to popular belief, the Harlem Renaissance did not emerge out of a literary and cultural wasteland (Brown pg 9). The writers of the Renaissance dealt with African American life from a African American perspective. The first important writer of the Renaissance was Claude McKay (1889 1948), who was born in Jamaica and came to the United States in 1912. McKay is best remembered for his poems treating racial themes. The ruling stated that the local government or federal government was entitled to exercise eminent dominant rules to enable them acquire private property and utilize it for purposes of economic development. Eminent domain also referred to as condemnation, is the act of taking private property and making it public property by the local governing authority, state, or federal government (Bradley 65). The private property taken away is converted to public property for public use. With reference to the case of the Kelo v. city of New London, the court ruled that the government should take private property through eminent domain for public use. This is due to the provisions of Fifth Amendment of the U.S constitution. New London, Connecticut, could exercise eminent domain for economic development. New London, Connecticut, was experiencing hard economic times majorly due to the closure of the U.S. Naval Undersea Warfare Center, which was the major employer in the region. This prompted a decrease in the tax base and population in general. This made the city leaders desperate for some development in the city s economy. The issues are what jurisdiction shall be used to govern the deal between the parties, issues with the formation of the agreement, warranties, warranty damages, consequential damages, search costs, lost profits, recession. The first issue is determining which jurisdiction should govern the agreement between the parties Article 2 of the Uniform Commercial Code, the Common law, or the CISG? When the subject matter of a transaction is for the sale of goods, Article 2 of the UCC is used to analyze the deal between the parties. Article 2 of the UCC governs the formation, performance, and damages. When the subject matter of the transaction is not for the sale of goods or is to provide a service, the common law is used to analyze the deal between the parties. The Common law governs formation, performance, and damages. When the transaction is for non consumer goods and between parties from different nations, the Contracts for the International Sale of Goods is used to govern the transaction. The CISG governs formation, performance, and damages. In this case, the party s agreement would be considered a hybrid contact as the agreement includes a goods component, as well as a service component. Since the agreement between the parties is a hybrid contract we can use the Predominate Purpose Test or the Gravamen Test to determine whether the UCC or the Common law should govern. In 1951, Charles E. Wilson praised the American Newspaper Publishers Association for basically convincing the free world that they were in constant danger. Wilson also told the group that because of this perceived danger, Congress was now able to budget vast sums of money to avert it.10 At the advent of the 1960s, Eisenhower s definition of the military industrial complex had fundamentally been altered by President John F. Kennedy. Kennedy, along with Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara, consolidated the military industry process and set up controls similar to that of a major corporation.11 As Commander in Chief, Kennedy resisted pressure from senior military advisors to send additional troops into Vietnam. Kennedy s desire was to have all troops out of Southeast Asia by 1965.12 These beliefs were reinforced by the failures of the Bay of Pigs operation in 1961 and the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. Kennedy had no desire to escalate the Cold War which was contrary to what the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Central Intelligence Agency wanted. By refusing to go to war, Kennedy was also reducing the possibility of greater profits for many defense contractors.
