Biertan village is located in Transylvania, Romania and is dominated by the 15th century UNESCO World Heritage listed Saint Mary's Citadel and Church. The late Gothic church was built between 1500-1525 and features a spectacular 1483 altarpiece painted by a Viennese artist. Around 1515, the interior and exterior of the church was decorated by artist Johannes Reychmut. Today the village's winemaking tradition has declined but small quantities are still produced in the local cellars.
