Biertan is the village of the commune with the same name in Sibiu
County, Transylvania, Romania.
One of the most popular
destinations in the heart
of Romania, Biertan is a
wonderful village built
around a fortified church
at the end of the 13th
century. Located only 80
kilometers from Sibiu
and 30 from Medias,
Biertan can easily be
visited in one day.
Biertan is situated in a long valley, surrounded by hills and vineyards, in the center of Romania. The
village was founded in 1283 and is dominated by the church-fortress Saint Mary. This medieval
building, surrounded by three fortified walls, is part of the World Heritage of the UNESCO
Foundation.
Biertan was an important ecclesiastical and commercial center - in 1572 it was named as the
Department of the Lutheran Episcopate. The Gothic church was built between 1500 and 1525. Its
spectacular iconostasis has 28 icons, painted by a Viennese artist in 1483.
The arrangement of the three enclosures surrounding the church, the 6 defense towers and 3
bastions reveals such interesting things about the daily lives of the inhabitants. Access to the
fortress is through a covered staircase that runs past the Watchtower, and at the end of the stairs,
there is a large stone in front of the church, which, long ago, was the place where all the villains
were seated so that the whole community would recognize it.
On a hill, in the center of Biertan, is one of the most imposing and well-
fortified peasant fortresses in Transylvania.
The church was built at
the beginning of the
16th century as a late
Gothic church-hall. It
has kept its
appearance until
nowadays, and the
elements inside are
invaluable
values whose story
goes centuries ago.
One of the most interesting
legends of this church refers
to the divorce court or the
"matrimonial prison," in
which the couples who
wanted to divorce were
forced to spend several
weeks together, always
sharing a room, a chair, a
set of dishes and a bed.
Practically, the two had to
share everything.
What is interesting,
however, is that in 300
years, only one couple
wanted to divorce their
time in that room.
The Monument of the Romanian Heroes of the First World War
The monument is located in Avram Iancu street no. 2,
in front of the general school. It was unveiled in 1939,
in the memory of the Romanian heroes of the First
World War. The monument, 3.5 m high, is made of
mosaic concrete, the enclosure being made with a
concrete fence. On the monument there are the
names of 38 Romanian heroes and the words: "This
honor and gratitude sign of the past was raised by the
Romanians in Biertan commune in the year 1935,
Heroes Day, at the initiative of the members of the
Society of Former Fighters in Biertan".
