Biertan is a village in Sibiu County, Transylvania, Romania built around a fortified church from the late 13th century. The Gothic church is surrounded by three fortified walls and was part of the UNESCO World Heritage list. It has an iconicostasis with 28 icons painted in 1483. On a hill in the center of Biertan is one of the best preserved peasant fortresses in Transylvania. The village was also an important ecclesiastical and commercial center when it was named the see of the Lutheran Episcopate in 1572.
