Rebuilding rome
Under Pope Sixtus V in the late 16th century, architect Domenico Fontana prepared a plan to rebuild Rome by marking out key points in the city with obelisks. This established a framework of connections between sacred and secular sites using streets and visual accents. Fontana's plan placed obelisks strategically to guide development and provide a system of landmarks across the expanding city. Though only the obelisk placements were realized under Sixtus V, the plan set up a network to inform future growth and design in Rome.
