The Web is the common name for the World Wide Web, a subset of the Internet consisting of the pages that can be accessed by a Web browser. Many people assume that the Web is the same as the Internet, and use these terms interchangeably. However, the term Internet actually refers to the global network of servers that makes the information sharing that happens over the Web possible. So, although the Web does make up a large portion of the Internet, but they are not one and same.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
1. EMPOWERMENT
TECHNOLOGIES
ICT as medium for advocacy and developmental communication
The social power of social media
Digital citizenship and the Filipino people
2. Web Portals
A Web portal is a website that contains information
from different sources and places them in one
location in a uniform way.
An example of a web portal is Yahoo! Since it offers
a web portal where news, email, weather etc. are
found in one page.
6. What is Advocacy
Is the act or process of supporting a cause or
proposal. Advocacy seeks to ensure that people,
particularly those who are most valuable in society
are able to:
Have their voice heard on issues that are
important to them
Defend and safeguard their rights
Have their views and wishes genuinely considered
when decisions are being made about their lives.
7. Express their views and concerns
Access information and services
Defend and promote their rights and
responsibilities
Explore choices and options
8. Development Communication
Development communication is about
communication that can be used for development
and is also about using communication to change or
improve something.
The use of different types of messages to change
the socio-economic condition for people. These
messages are designed to transform the behaviour
of people or their quality of life.
9. The use of ICT as a Medium for Advocacy
Advancement in ICTmakes it very useful in today’s
society. ICT serves as an effective tool for raising
awareness on different issues. It serves as a medium
for changing the world for the better if used
correctly or worsen thing if misued.
One of the technologies that can be used as a
medium for advocacy is Social Media. It is a web-
based communication tool that enables people to
interact with each other by both sharing and
consuming information.
10. Social Media Platforms used as a
medium of Advocacy
1. Social Networking – its purpose is to socialize
with friends, classmates and other people. Most
social media work this way: find a friend, add a
friend, read friend’s posts or statuses, and unite
with like minded people.
11. 2. Forums - are unique portions of a website that
allows visitors to interact with each other with
their opinions, advice, and help.
One thing that makes the forum special is that
you know what to expect; if you join a forum about
video games, you will see mostly topics regarding
video games.
Forums are a great way to find people who have
similar interests as you.
12. 3. Microblogging – is a new phenomenon in recent
years and is very similar to texting. Within a
certain amount of characters (160 or less) you
can send posts through mobile phones or through
laptops/pc’s. You can upload quick thoughts for
others to see.
(***Note: At the end of June 2009, the recent
protests in Iran have been microblogged through
Twitter and instant information and eye-witness
accounts made the protests real and provided
thoughts that could not be felt from a new
report.***)
13. 4. Bookmarking – since there is so much information
on the web – be it news, data, or other resources
assimilating in one place that’s referenced for you
personally would be a daunting task, if you
attempted to do it manually.
That is where bookmarking can provide links
that you find useful. This could be anything from a
news story to a funny video you saw. You can either
approve it or not and over time, it can also promote
a website’s business.
14. 5. Video Sites – anyone can upload a video, though
you must adhere to the copyright laws.
The videos that you can see are:
Educational Videos
Short Independent Films
Comedy Sketches
TV Episodes
Webisodes
15. 5. Search Engines – A lesser known type of social
media is the search engine. Years ago, you typed
in what you wanted and the matching results
appeared.
Now, you can customize your searches with local
results, rate the results, and even save the results
that you received.
16. (***Note: Social Media has been utilized by people
to raise awareness on particular issues on society,
such as environment, politics, gay-marriage,
revolutions, and many more.
Also, it has been used by many for
entertainment, sociability, and to simply express
ourselves on what we feel. Addressing to such issues
may cause awareness around the world which may
help in confronting the issues. It has also shown that
the world can also come together to assist and lend
a helping hand to people who are in need.***)
17. The Role of ICT in Recent History
Throughout recent history, the Philippines has been
one of the few nations that has demonstrated unity
for a call to action through social change.
These campaigns for social change would have not
been successful if it were not for ICT.
