TECHNOLOGIES
THE CURRENT STATE OF ICT TECHNOLOGIES
What is ICT?
Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
deals with the use of different communication
technologies such as mobile phones, telephones,
internet etc. to locate, save, send, and edit
information.
IT vs. IS
Information Technology (IT) is the use of any
computer, storage, networking and other physical
devices, infrastructure and processes to create,
store, secure, and exchange all forms of electronic
data
Information System (IS) is the collection of
technical and human resources that provide the
storage, computing, distribution and communication
of the information required by enterprises
IT vs. IS
Components of Information System
The main components of information systems are
People, Procedures, Hardware, Software, and
Telecommunication
People – Qualified people are a vital component of
any information system.
Ex. Business Analysts, Database Administrators,
Programmers and Computer Technicians
Procedures – procedures are used for using,
operating, and maintaining an information system
as part of its documentation
Hardware – is the physical parts or components of a
computer. Hardware components are categorized as
Input devices, Output devices and Storage
devices.
Ex. Input devices – Keyboard, Mouse, and Scanner
Output devices – Monitor and Printer
Storage devices – Harddisk, CD-ROM, Flashdrive
 Software – is a collection of programs designed to
operate, control, and extend the processing
capabilities of the computer.
Ex. Operating Systems, Compilers, Interpreters
and Assemblers
 Telecommunication – used to connect, or
network, computer systems and portable and
wearable devices and to transmit information.
 Ex. Wireless Connection and Wired Connection
Uses of ICT
 Education – Learning Management Software uses
online classes and Moodle style websites as ways
of utilizing technology in education.
 Business – ICT is a key technology in
interdisciplinary measure to reduce costs,
improve processes boost innovation and increase
productivity.
 Government – E-Government can be defined as a
set of public-sector reforms that make use of ICT.
The four interaction links of the e-government
consists of Government-to-Citizen (G2C),
Government-to-Business (G2B), Government-to-
Government (G2G) and Government-to-
Employee (G2E).
 Medicine – ICT is being used in the provision of
medical care in the sense of Body Scanners,
Patient Monitoring, Organ Transplants and
Patient Records.
 Banking and Finance- ICT is used in concepts like
Internet Banking, Automated Teller Machine,
Debit Card and Credit Card and Transaction
Processing and Recording.
 Transportation – ICT affects transportation
directly and indirectly via the GPS Tracker,
Citizen Centric Transport, Data Driven Driving,
Social Logistics and Airlines Reservation System.
ICT in the Philippines
 For every 100 Filipinos that you will meet there is
a high chance that they use a mobile phone and 7
of them have 2.
 The ICT industry employs 19.3% of the total
employment population of the Filipino workforce
 Is known as the “ICT Hub of Asia” due to the huge
growth of ICT-Related Jobs in the country
