Feminsim in Like Water For Chocolate by Laura Esquivel Essay
How does the author of Like Water for Chocolate depict her feminist views and how do they
contribute to two different themes of the novel? In the novel Like Water for Chocolate, Laura Esquivel
exposes her strong feminist attitude through a controlling first person limited narration and a detailed,
descriptive portrayal of the characters. This exploitation of feminist views supports two major themes:
change in traditional attitudes towards authority and freedom of expression. In this novel, Laura
Esquivel shows how Mexican women can overcome the powerful traditional authority of men and the
traditional mindset of women; and how women can overcome society s suppression and express
themselves freely. . These two themes have a direct ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The narrator can manipulate certain vies on certain characters. For example, throughout the novel the
reader obtains Tita s bashful point of view on Rosaura and Mama Elena s arrogance and ignorance. If
the narration would be something like third person omniscient, it would be up to the reader to decide
whether or not you think Tita is saying the truth, or if she s just being a selfish, immature teenager that
can handle growing up. Esquivel uses the first person narrator to implore her feminist message and
point of vie across to the reader
Change in attitude towards authority and freedom of expression can be seen through the way the
narrator creates sympathy for Tita and creates a masculine, authoritative character for Mama Elena.
Tita represents the woman who can think as an individual moving on and changing dominant
authoritative views on her and that can express herself freely. Mama Elena has the mannish attitude
and character because she represents the woman that has already gone through years of suppression
and plans to suppress her daughter just like they did to her. Tita being the last child is obliged to take
care of her mother until she passes away, this silly tradition does not let her marry or have a family of
her own. Mama Elena also can also represent men, who have suppressed women forever in Mexico;
but Laura Esquivel s main intention is to show woman s suppression of women. A change in attitude
toward authority

Hulu has been one of the best competing online television viewing services, along with Netflix,
Amazon Instant Video and Google Videos, and has been my favorite choice to view all kinds of TV
Shows. An interesting and captivating show is the Chef Race: UK. Vs. US. the Season 1. It comprises
of several Episodes playing on Hulu. The fierceness, endurance and ultimate test of culinary and
entrepreneurial skills cannot be overemphasize as fourteen home cooks representing US. and Uk.,
seven from each country, compete for an opportunity of only one person to win the ultimate prize of
$100,000. In particular, Episode 6, Hot Sauce Hustle, is the latest I have watched and has not come
short on its delivery of the heated battles I have always enjoyed. It is a 43 minutes video. The
contestants, home cooks, are given tasks and expected to execute them in a timely and efficient
manner. The Episode s tasks require the contestants, separated into two groups, UK. Vs. US., to, first,
create an excellent hot barbeque sauce from a natural farm produce, brand them into their unique
bottles, and label them appropriately. Second, they were required to sale these bottles of barbeque hot

Around 400,000 robberies occur every year (fbi.gov). In the short story A Retrieved Reformation By:
O. Henry, Jimmy Valentine was a criminal who moved to Elmore, a small town in Arkansas, looking
for a fresh start. He changed his name and fell in love with the bank owner s daughter. Valentine had a

bank tools so he would be able to change for his fiance. On his way to give away the tools Jimmy

He changed his name when he first came to town so the cops would not be able to find him also so no
one would suspect he was a robber. This argument is invalid because the detective Ben Price found
Jimmy and thought that he was a changed man so Ben did not arrest him. In the letter Jimmy lied
about going to Little Rock to give away his tools he actually was going to rob another bank. There is
no evidence to support that Jimmy was going to Little Rock to rob another bank. Finally Jimmy did
not change for Annabel he only acted different so she would like Jimmy and he would be able to get
close to the bank to rob it. Jimmy fell in love with Annabel the first time he saw her, Annabel thought
fondly of him so Jimmy was not only acting different to rob the bank. All of these arguments can not
be supported by evidence so Jimmy was able to change.
Since Jimmy Valentine wanted to change for his fiance, was going to give away his bank robbing tools
and changed his name so he could have a fresh start, Jimmy Valentine is a new, changed man. Jimmy
Valentine did receive a fresh start he opened his own shoe shop, the shoe shop prospered. He also got
engaged to Annabel Adams. Finally Jimmy saved a girl who was trapped in a vault. About only 2% of

Contribution Of 82nd Airborne Division Combat Engineers...
This paper explores the contribution of 82nd Airborne Division Combat Engineers in World War II.
During an Allied Force mission dubbed, Operation Market Garden , the city of Nijmegan was integral
in the overall success or failure in defeating the German Forces. On the outskirts of Nijmegan, the
Waal River separated Allied Forces from the German Panzer Divisions. This paper will annotate the
experiences, contributions, and actions of combat engineers assigned to Charlie Company 307th

The specific contributions combat engineers made during this operation primarily came from within
the 82nd Airborne Division. Under the leadership of Brigadier General (BG) James Gavin, his
paratroopers were tasked with dropping in northeast Netherlands to secure bridges at the towns of
Grave and Nijmegan. The 82nd Airborne Division s primary target was securing the bridges at
Nijmegan to facilitate the Allied Forces XXX Corps, who would be arriving through Nijmegan to a
town called Arnhem. Arnhem was a town that laid on the German / Dutch border. Allied Intelligence
determined that two SS Panzer Divisions of German forces occupied that town.
Within the 82nd Airborne Division was the 504 Parachute Infantry Regiment (PIR). Assigned to the
504th PIR was Charlie Company 307th Engineer Battalion. On the third day of Operation Market
Garden, the 82nd Airborne, under BG Gavin, was directed to make an assault across the Waal River to
secure the Nijmegan Highway Bridge. The 504th PIR was the primary assault force, augmented with
engineers from C Co 307th Engineer Battalion. Intelligence from the 504th PIR determined that the
crossing was going to happen between two large buildings on the southern bank of the Waal River.
The Engineers determined the river was roughly 1200 feet in width and having a current of about eight
miles per hour. All of the support by fire was provided up and down the

What Is The Difference Between Danny Saunders And Reuven
The Chosen (TRAAS)
Danny Saunders and Reuven Malters could not be more different in appearance. Following Hasidic
traditions, Danny had long earlocks, wore a tzitzit, and wore shoes with a metal bottom. Also, by he is
in college his beard is full grown. The only aspect, appearance wise, that the boys had in common in
the beginning of the story were their black skullcaps. Reuven had always worn glasses, but after
spending countless years reading every chance he got, Danny needed them too. The stress caused by
the reading and from the pressures of his family became too much on his eyes and they started to turn
red and develop bags underneath them. As the firstborn son, Danny had known, for as long as he could
remember, that he was to take his father s place as tzaddik and lead his own congregation. But Danny
knew that he did not belong up on a podium preaching, just like Reuven knew that he was not meant
to be a math professor. Reuven s father, David, was one of his best friends. He talked to him ... Show

times when Danny visited him in the hospital and told him to leave without even listening to him. But
when he told his father about what he did, he was told to make Danny his friend and not to push him
away. The next day, Danny came to visit him again. He apologized for his behavior the previous day

Reston is a census designated place located in Northern Virginia s Fairfax County, about 20 miles
north of Washington D.C. Containing four artificial lakes (among which Lake Anne and Lake Thoreau

18th century, Lord Fairfax the descendant of the original land owners decided to auction it off for $5

The Internal Revenue Service Of The United States
1. The Internal Revenue Service was first used as a means to pay for war expenses. In 1862 President
Lincoln and congress created the income tax to help fund the Civil War, but was later removed after
10 years (IRS, 2016). In 1894 Congress tried to reenact the income tax but the Supreme Court Stated
it was unconstitutional. In 1913, with the 16th amendment, Congress was able yet again to bring back
income tax, which helped to pay for World War I and II. Somewhere in the 1950 s the name changed
from The Bureau of Internal Revenue to the internal revenue Service which it is known for today
(IRS, 2016). The IRS Commissioner and Chief of Counsel are selected by the President of the United

Dream Of The Rood Comparison
Dream of the Rood takes on a perspective that is unfamiliar for anyone with knowledge on the
crucifixion of Christ. The narrator emphasizes the loyalty of the cross to Christ and how beautiful it
looks because it is covered in gems. Using his vision as a means to connect to the reader, he takes us
through his dream in three parts. To effectively communicate with his audience, the narrator must
make us remember our experience with the crucifixion. Dream of the Rood can be compared with
Christian George Stevens The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965) because each is telling the story about
the crucifixion. Certain similarities are present throughout both works; however, they are shown in
different perspectives. Dream of the Rood takes a traditional ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

In the Dream, the mention of Satan is not present, but in the film Stevens makes it a point to make
Satan a main character. Moreover, one of the main scenes is Satan speaking to the prophets and
planning against Christ, but the information is not factual. Consequently, this movie cannot be taken
seriously because it is too Hollywood and does not allow for the emotional connection that is seen in
Dream of the Rood. I trembled when he embraced me, but I dared not bow to the ground (43). In The
Greatest Story Ever Told, Jesus is neither as eloquent nor as effective as he should be. Go now, and

things shall be yours without me asking (scene 5). In the film, he is repetitive and the movie itself is

Essay about No Country for Old Men
I have always wanted to see this movie, but never had the time to get around to it. There was so much
hype going around about it. When I first heard about the movie coming to theaters, it did not sound
like a movie I would like. However, when the word got around to me, I knew I just had to check it out.
I must say that I am glad I sat down and watched it in its entirety. My first opinion was totally wrong.
After watching the movie, I now understand the buzz that followed it. It was a classic story of a man
who comes across a treasure and believes that it just must have been his lucky day. However, the
conflict arises because he is not the only one in search of the treasure. This starts off a violent and

Llewelyn was not an ordinary guy who could be easily manipulated. He was no punk at all; when push
came to shove, he was ready to shove back. I have always liked suspense thrillers like this movie. The
ultimate suspense comes at the end where a massive shootout happens at the motel where Llewelyn is
at, and is killed. Also you know that Anton is still on the loose, and still does not have the treasure he
seeks which is now with the mob. The movie ends as a cliffhanger when you see Sheriff Ed Tom Bell
(Tommy Lee Jones) telling his wife about the two dreams he had the night before. Both dreams are
about his father who has already passed. Unable to remember what the first dream was about, he goes
on to explain the second. In the second dream, he describes his dad riding on pass him on horseback as
if he did not know his own son. He goes on to say that his dad is going to a place to make a fire to stay
by in the cold and dark world. My interpretation of the dream is that the cold and dark place represents
death, but the light from the fire represents life. The fire is a symbol for the sheriff s life and his father
being beside it means he is always with his son. After he finishes telling his wife, the movies just goes
off. I really enjoyed watching No Country for Old Men. It followed all the reviews I received from my
family and peers. Out of the entire movie, I only disliked how the movie ended

Finland Education Vs American Education System
Finland is a country with a well known reputation for excellent education. Finland is ranked twelfth in
the world for education, whereas the United States of America is ranked fifteenth (Iceland is number
one). (Human Development indices) Finland also has the highest PISA scores in the world. (Human
Development Indices) The U.S. used to be the top, but now we are slowly falling behind. Perhaps the
U.S. should examine the Finnish education system and use some of its ideas to revamp our system.
The curriculum in Finland consists of these main ideas: personalized learning for all, high standards,
the enjoyment of subjects and equal education. Personalized learning is the most important piece of

have different needs to be filled. Many argue that because we are so diverse there is no way that
Finland s system could work here because, Finnish is a culture and Finland is it s country, America is
not one single culture. That is not really true, in recent years Finland has seen a major influx of
immigrants. Finland is an extremely diverse country right now.
Another advantage Finland has in being small is that their education costs are smaller. Adopting a
Finnish curriculum would raise the cost of education significantly through taxes. Though taxpayers
would see return in an all free school system, many would not look past the tax rates to see the benefit
higher taxes would bring.
Overall the Finnish school system most likely wouldn t work in the United States, if implemented at a
national level. Our two countries are just too different to transfer curriculums smoothly. The United
States should seek advice from Finnish educators though, to design a system of our own that fits our
particular needs. When designing our system we should allow experts and educators to create the
goals, and standards not our lawmakers. We should also try to level the playing field by allowing room
for education to be personalized to fit each students needs all throughout their

Perception Of The Truth In The Necklace By Guy De Maupassant
Perception of the Truth
What would you do if you lost something of great value that did not belong to you? In the short story
The Necklace by Guy de Maupassant, Madam Loisel says No... there s nothing more humiliating as
looking poor in the middle of a lot of rich women. In this passage Madam Loisel was worried about
how people would perceive her at the party. I the story was about a couple who was not very wealthy
unlike most of their friends. The wife got invited to a very fancy affair and refused to go unless she
had a fancy dress to wear. After receiving all the money her husband had saved up he still complained
about not looking up to par with the rest of the guests. She then wanted a nice piece of jewelry. She
borrows a diamond necklace from one of her friends. She enjoys herself at the affair, but on the way
home loses the necklace. The couple then borrows money from everyone they knew to purchase a
replacement for thirty six thousand francs. After returning the replaced necklace she then had to work
the next ten years to pay off all the money they had borrowed. She then found out the necklace that
was lost was only an imitation. The long term hardships of the main characters are based upon the
false perception of the truth. Madam Loisel felt that if she didn t go to the affair looking rich then they

The Purpose Of Indian Boarding Schools
Topic 1)
What was the intended purpose of Indian boarding schools? According to the Wikipedia page, Native
American boarding schools, they were established in the United States during the late 19th and early
20th centuries to educate and [simulate] Native American children and youths according to European
standards . So, the intended purpose of the Indian boarding schools was to educate and assimilate the
children with the idea of the living the American way . The reformers wanted the children to
understand and have practical knowledge of the American culture , and be kept away from their
traditional Indian relatives. Probably, their Indian relatives were closed minded and did not want to
expose the younger generation to different things. According to the website nativepartnership.org,
reformers assumed that it was necessary to civilize Indian people (par. 2). The reformers wanted the
children to understand the outside world, not have influences from their tribal life, be a self sufficient
member of society, and not have anything, get in their way.
2).How does Richard Pratt s statement, Kill the Indian...save the man, relate to these Indian boarding
schools? I think Richard Pratt s statement Kill the Indian...save the man, relates to these Indian
boarding schools because when Richard Pratt opened the boarding school he had the goal as a army
officer to educate and show the Native American children to be members of America society. He also

Impact Of Orientalism In Western Music
History is about the present as much as it is concerned with the past because the past forms the
foundation of how things are today which will also become history in years to come.
As my own practice is music heavily influenced by the west, I will be exploring the definition of
Orientalism and The Primitive and Pagan in Contemporary Art with some analysis of their long
history before identifying their effects on today s western music.
Famous orientalist, Edward Said, explained in his book Orientalism that through European
colonization, the Europeans established orientalism, the study of Orientals, as a way to define
themselves as the superior race compared to Orientals and justify their colonization. As the study of
Orientals expanded, Westerners generalized attributes of Easterners and started forming their own
knowledge about Easterners. Hence, Orientalism can now be defined as Western stereotypes about
Eastern people.
By this definition, orientalism can be found in rock music like Arabian Knights by Siousie and The
Banshees and has affected the way lyrics are written in songs. In Arabian Knights, the lyrics Myriad
lights I d be impressed Arabian Knights at your primitive best supports the idea that the arabian area is

In the more recent years, pop songs like Buttons by the Pussy Cat Dolls, uses strong elements of
Middle Eastern music in its production to complement the pop beats. A distinct Arabic melody played
by a flute sounding instrument can be heard repeatedly throughout the song to make it more oriental.
The same can be said about songs by singer M.I.A as she uses Oriental music such as Bollywood
music in songs like Jimmy . It is hence clear that Orientalism has affected the type and style music in
both past and

Rhetorical Analysis Of Holes Then Watching The Film ...
Holes Persuasive Essay
After reading Louis Sachar s novel Holes then watching the film adaptation by Andrew Davis, I can
without a doubt say that I enjoyed watching the movie more than reading the novel. I found the novel
to be detailed, however, boring and unenjoyable due to its slow pace and confusing structure. When I
watched the movie, I really liked the emotion and passion, the simplicity and clear structure and the
entertaining and amusing action and comedy aspects. These are the factors that contribute to why I
believe that the film Holes is more enjoyable than the novel Holes .
Whilst reading the novel, I never experienced any passion or emotion. I felt that the novel was
descriptive but just not captivating to audiences. When reading Holes I definitely found myself losing
focus and interest. This may be due to the slow pace and difficulty to picture each scene realistically.
Time after time, I found myself unengaged and unwilling to continue the novel due to its lack of
emotional description. However, in the movie, actually watching the scenes be bought to life engaged
audiences and, during major scenes in the plot, enhanced the audiences experience using drama,
realism and passion.
The first example of a scene that is represented better in the film than compared to the novel, is when
Hector Zeroni runs away from the camp. In the novel, while the boys are digging holes, Hector is
involved in a fight with ZigZag after ZigZag threatens Stanley. During the

Lies In Huckleberry Finn
In today s society, lying has become a thing that happens almost every hour, of every day. There are
some people that believe lying is wrong, and there are other people that believe isn t always wrong
and that it can be good in some situations. In the book, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, many
lies occur. The lies that occur are both good and bad lies, and they occur because Mark Twain is trying
to get the message out that lying is happening all the time even if you do not know it is happening. But
what exactly is the difference between a good and a bad lie? A good lie is considered a lie that you tell
in order to help yourself or someone else out. It could be to save there life, or it could to stop them

Tobacco Advertising
Introduction
Tobacco companies like Lorillard Tobacco Company who holds the brand Newport, makes billions of
dollars off of advertisement, primarily focusing on young adults. There are organizations whose
primary mission is to end smoking within young adults. Organizations such as Truth, whose main goal
in society is to end tobacco advertisement in hopes of creating a positive impact on society. Truth
advertisements are just as catchy as a cigarette commercial gaining the attention of teens and adults
alike on the negative effects of smoking.
With advertisements from organizations like Truth, how is it that Newport and other cigarette brands
are still profiting in sales? How are cigarettes still on the market? Is it the price? ... Show more content

Point of Sale Point of sale is the place where sales are made. On a bigger scale point of sale might be a
mall, market, or city. On a smaller scale, retailers consider point of sale to be the area surrounding the
counter where customers pay. So figure 4 will be a perfect example of a point of sale on a smaller

Jancey and Jones (2002) found that the tobacco industry claims that tobacco advertising and
promotion are not aimed at those under age. It s accepted that cigarette advertising and promotion play

Dr Jekyll And Hyde In The Strange Case Of Dr. Jekyll And...
Every human being consists of qualities that form to either their good or bad side. No one is purely
good or evil. To try to fit in society, people are willing to do whatever it takes to hide any
characteristics that might fall short of the social norm. In Robert Louis Stevenson s novella, The
Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the characters demonstrate how every human being consists
of both qualities and how people suppress the qualities that are undesired by society in order to fit in.
However, after a while people can no longer stand to hide part of who they are which leads people to
substance use to take away their conscience in order to show their dark side.

People would rather be miserable and pretend to be someone else, than risk judged for who they really
are. In the novella, Stevenson uses Dr. Jekyll s experiment to show how far people are willing to go to
be freed from judgment of society. Dr. Jekyll conducted an experiment that split his personality into
two people, the good and evil side of him. Dr. Jekyll knew he was risking his life before he started but
he thought it would be worth it to get to be the other side of him for once. I hesitated long before I put
this theory to the test of practice. I knew well that I risked death. (57) Dr. Jekyll was willing to risk
everything to experience his other side. When Dr. Jekyll drank his chemical solution, he transformed
into Mr. Hyde. Mr. Hyde was completely free to be evil without his conscience telling him it was
wrong. No one really knew who Mr. Hyde was so he had no reason to fear judgment from others. He
was completely free to act as himself. This relates to the real world in that people use drugs and
alcohol to transform into their dark side. When using drugs or drinking alcohol, your body loses all
control over your consciousness. The substances are more powerful and led people to do things they
would normally not even think they are capable of and might regret when experiencing withdrawal of

The Cause And Effects Of The Little Ice Age
Little Ice Age For five centuries, Europe basked in warm, settled weather, with only the occasional
bitter winters, cool summers and memorable storms. Summer after summer passed with long, dreamy
days, golden sunlight and bountiful harvests. Compared with what was to follow, these centuries were
a climatic golden age. (Homewood)The cold weather of these centuries lead to the growth of Glaciers.
Glaciers form when snow stays in the same area year round, and them becomes ice. Each year the new
layer add to the old ones and it forms a big pile of ice. Eventually the air pockets get smaller and the
ice gets tighter compacted. For most Glaciers take about 100 years to go through the process.(National
Snow) Due to the Cold climate and starvation, the Little Ice age killed off a huge amount of the
Northern Hemisphere between the 13th and 19th centuries. There is no telling what happened to cause
the Little Ice Age. Many scientists have tried to figure this mystery out. Not all of them agree, but
some think what caused the disaster is that the sun started giving off less heat and that there was an
increase in volcanic erupting. Others say that the decrease in greenhouse gas lead to larger amounts of
sea ice. Also, he slow greenhouse gas increase was the main driver of the sea ice changes.(Sedláček,
Jan and Lawrence)No one knows which one of these inferences are correct, but with technology
getting more sophisticated, future scientist might be able to solve the mystery of the

Notes On The Generation Effect
The Generation Effect
Christopher J Gonzaba
Texas A M University
Abstract
Generation effect tests whether people remember information better when they participate and
generate the word rather than just reading them. In our study we used a lexical decision task to test the
spreading activation. Twelve undergraduate students from Texas A M participated. Some of the trails
consisted of two related words and some consisted of two unrelated words. Two main effects were
used; between subjects and within subjects. Task type represented by between subjects showed
whether those who generated words generated information better than non generated words. The
within subjects suggested whether rule type affect generated words and ... Show more content on

Memory storage implies putting that information into either short term or long term memory. Sensory
memory is another type of memory but since it is less than one second memory storage has no use.
Short term and long term memory decide whether we are able to retrieve the information or not
(Mastin, 2010).
Sensory and short term memory is less than one minute of storage and because of that they have no
use for explicit and implicit memory. Both are found and used to breakdown long term memory.
Explicit memory is the use of conscious thinking for the use of recall of important facts or events.
Implicit memory is the opposite; it is the use of unconscious thinking of information and reaction. For
example, texting, walking, or writing, on does not simply stop to think how to preform those actions
(McLeod, 2007).
To further breakdown explicit and implicit memory we use declarative and procedural memory.
Declarative memory corresponds with explicit memory because it engages in conscious thinking to
recall factual information. Procedural memory corresponds with implicit memory because it is the
basic repetition of facts that do not take much into consideration. Declarative memory is broken down
in episodic and semantic memory. Episodic memory helps the retrieval of facts, events, or experiences
in ones life. Semantic memory recollects general facts and concepts that one can typically think of off
the top of their head (Mastin, 2010). Memory plays a

The Pros And Cons Of Apartheid Schools
Although there is no apartheid law in place in the United States, there are still schools that follow the
same tradition. According to Tractenberg, Orfield, and Flaxman, every major city examined by a
federal court was found to have a long history of illegal public actions and decisions which fostered
segregation . As modern citizens, we should thrive for a diverse world in which our students are not
segregated whether by the color of their skin or social economic status. Unfortunately, apartheid
schools are prevalent in New Jersey which ranks 3rd in holding black students and 5th in holding
Latinos in apartheid schools. Although apartheid schools make up 8% of all schools in New Jersey,
they still hold 26% of black students and 13% of Latino s. Most of apartheid schools are often in
urban areas. In New Jersey, 12 districts that are 100% segregated from other cultures and social
economic status are Essex which holds three, two in Hudson, and one each in Camden, Mercer,
Middlesex, Monmouth, Passaic and Union. According to the article, school segregation in New Jersey
is worse than residential segregation . This statement presents a strong representation of the
segregation in school. Many would think that apartheid schools are the result of the neighborhood
however, that is not the case. Even white students who live in poor neighborhood do not attend an
apartheid school. The many factors that contributes to segregation is residential segregation, racial
differences, and

Political Participation Case Study
3. Write an essay in which you discuss how public opinion differs among various groups in America
according to race and ethnicity, religion, and region. What impact, if any, may this have on each group
s level of political participation and responsiveness by elected officials?
Public Opinion differs greater among various groups in America according to race and ethnicity,
religion, and region. This has a great effect on group s level of political participation and
responsiveness by elected officials. This can be seen especially in the case of race and ethnicity. An
example of this is the Mexican community and the issue of immigration. As many individuals a part of

As Caucasians in the United States have started the #Alllivesmatter, as well as the ##blacklivesmatter
movement against the #blacklivesmatter movement. Caucasians also have more political influence, as
many elected officials are caucasian, and therefore there is a quicker response time compared to other
races and ethnicities. This distinction is also seen in religion, in the case of Islam and Christianity. For
example, the islamic community takes offense to the term radical Islam, however many individuals
not a part of that community view it as dangerous. This is partially due to terrorism efforts, such as
that of I.S.I.S., and the 9/11 attacks. Meanwhile we can see that there is a larger response by the media
on the war on Christmas against Christianity, in which Christmas novelties are being removed from
public spaces. This has garnered the response of media groups such as Fox, who are against the war
on Christmas. This has all led to an increase in political participation by Christians compared to
Muslims, due to the fact that the communities are being persecuted when they do participate. We can
also see that Christians see a quicker response time in this. Region also plays a major

The ad for American apparel giant Van Heusen the world s largest shirt company was created in 1952.
The controversial advertisement is referred to as the Witch Doctor. The ad claimed that 4 out of 5 men
want Oxfords . The odd one out being what looks to be a Native American or an African man dressed
to appear like a Neanderthal. The blonde Caucasian image bears the caption, college and alumni
tradition! , while the tribal dressed man reads, rumor has it that even he would gladly swap his boar s

What happened because of each ad? Were there protests? Was the ad taken down? Or did the reverse
happen, meaning did the brand thrive because of the controversial ad?
In 1952, this advertisement would not have raised any eyebrow, due to the culture dogma of the time.
Some members of society during that era believed that the white community was superior to the
minority community. Even though this is the era of the Civil Rights Movement, no one marched or
boycotted Van Heusen. These types of ads contain subliminal messages. Surely, this advertising may
have boldly offended many people. Nevertheless, this print ad was obviously effective. Without a
doubt this ad persuaded the target market to buy the oxford shirts to maintain their predominant status
in the social circle. Shirt sales didn t decrease and Van Heusen is a major global brand in this era.
However, critics have taken to social media platforms to complain about the 2011 Nivea ad. One tweet
boldly stated that Nivea claims that black people aren t civilized. Others called the ad unapologetically
racist. The company withdrew the 2011 advertisement after numerous complaints and released an
apology stating, This ad was inappropriate and offensive. It was never our intention to offend anyone,
and for this we are deeply sorry. This ad will never be used again. Diversity and equal opportunity are
crucial values of our company. Nivea wasn t interested in debating its ad,

The Transnational Nature Of Migration In Robert Smith s...
Robert Smith s Mexican New York explores the transnational nature of Mexican migration through an
extended cast study of migrants and their children from Ticuani, in Puebla, Mexico. This book covers
the many ways that migration influences social, political, and economic pattern in both New York and
Mexico. Smith begins by describing how Ticuani has been transformed by migration, changing the
town into a sort of holding place for the very young and the very old. Next, he discusses how Mexican
migrants fit into the racial, ethnic, and economic hierarchies in New York. I found the discussion of
Mexican/Puerto Rican relationships particularly interesting because I was reminded of the
simultaneous distancing, community, and competition evident in

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Essay
Born on February 8, 1828, Jules Verne had spent most of his child hood in the small, seafaring town of

family relocated to Quai Jean Bart. In the same year, Verne s brother Paul was born. Following his
brother would be three more sisters, Anna, Mathilde, and Maria in 1836, 1839, and 1842,

his regular occupation as a stockbroker. In the following years, the increasingly popular author
published his first long fiction book, Five Weeks in a Balloon. This book fascinated to many since
Central Africa was a vast and unexplored territory. Verne, soon after, would retire and devote his time
to create stories that many will now called the greatest works in science fiction ( Jules Verne ). His
works were soon interrupted in the years 1870 71, a time that would be known as the Franco Prussian
war. The severity of the dispute had resulted in Verne having to leave his personal life and serve with
the French coast guard and manning the cannons ( Verne,

Corruption Of Prisoners In Plato s Arguments Of Democracy
In a dark cave there are prisoners, restricted to seeing what shadows puppeteers cast upon the stone
screen in front of them. This timeless story by Plato, used as a metaphor for those that are, to the
philosopher Plato, lowbrows, and have no desire to question what is around them and find the truth
and embrace ignorance. I have experienced this first hand, being an exemplification of what it means
to not question what I have faith in, or seek more. However, I have also experienced what it is to be
the prisoner that turns his head, as well as the prisoner that turns the other cheek.
When Plato was writing this dialogue, his goal was to show those in the metaphorical cave, how daft
and short sided he believes them to be. When Plato articulates the puppeteers through the voice of
Socrates, he says, ...and between the fire and the prisoners there is a raised ... Show more content on

Currently, I believe our nation s voters are in a bad state, to quote Winston Churchill, The best
argument against democracy is a five minute conversation with the average voter. I believe you can
apply these words to show how corrupt the average voter is. Today, the prisoners in the cave are those
that vote according to social standards, and support whatever is generally accepted as just. Those that
turn their heads are those that vote and mold their beliefs to reflect the word of God through Jesus
Christ. 11 score and 19 years ago, the founding fathers turned their heads from the Europe and created
a great nation following these beliefs. As said by Os Guinness, Beyond any question, the way the
American founders consistently linked faith and freedom, republicanism and religion, was not only
deliberate and thoughtful, it was also surprising and anything but routine. When Americans as a whole

Bruce Springsteen s Song Born In The USA
Ask anyone during the mid 1980 s and I can promise you they have heard Born in the U.S.A by Bruce
Springsteen. Written in 1984, this record setting single was the theme song for America during the
Vietnam war. Born in the U.S.A swept the nation by storm, selling 18 million copies. Every American
may know to scream as loud as they can when the lyrics BORN IN THE U.S.A come on, but they may
not necessarily know the true meaning behind the song. Many think it s a song about patriotism, but it
s actually a song that shows the cruel treatment that Vietnam veterans received upon returning
home. This widely supported song deals with the negative effects of the Vietnam War on Americans

In the beginning of the song, Bruce sings, Got in a little hometown jam, so they put a rifle in my hand,
sent me off to a foreign land, to go and kill the yellow man ( Born In The U.S.A. Lyrics. ). This is
referring to when the government sent soldiers over to Vietnam to kill the Viet Cong. The song
continues to scream patriotism as shown in the repeated lyrics Born in the U.S.A . The song then goes
into the struggles for Vietnam veterans when they returned home from the war. It then continues to
talk about the hardship these veterans faced when looking for a job. No one at the time wanted to hire
anyone who was affiliated with the war because many Americans were against it. The song then goes
into talking about one of this buddies who went over to fight the Viet Cong. Bruce sings about how
the Viet Cong is still there and he died in an effort to defeat them. This not only talks about one person
who died, it is also a representation of all soldiers who lost their lives during the war. This song was
not only a song intended to raise Americans patriotism, it also showed the hardships Vietnam veterans
had to face both over seas, as well as back

Greek Beliefs In Ancient Greek Mythology
Greek mythology is one of the most interesting topics to come out of ancient Greek culture. The idea
of sincerely believing that every move or choice that is made all goes back to the gods and goddesses
fascinates me. In ancient Greece, the normal thing was to believe in multiple higher powers instead of
today were majority dictates that there is only one higher power. I was aware of some facts about the
Greek s belief in the god and goddesses from previous history classes but I have never at the freedom
to choose to write a paper solely on them. The goal of my research was to find out what made the gods
and goddesses so special to the Greeks and why a civilization would worship them for centuries.
The start of believing in the gods and goddesses started as a way to explain daily life and to give life a
purpose . Without a reason for living majority of people would descend into madness with no morals.
Unlike other religions that had a holy text, mythology was based primarily on word of mouth. The
stories were passed down from generation to generation to create the outlandish but captivating
mythology that we have in modern society. While there were countless gods and goddesses, students
do typically learn the 12 that are called the Olympian Gods . This group was led by Zeus, who is
perhaps is the most well known Greek god. The next 11 were named as followed, Athena, Apollo,
Poseidon, Hermes, Hera, Aphrodite, Demeter, Ares, Artemis, Hades, Hephaistos, and Dionysus. I have
attached a family tree to help showcases how majority of the gods and goddesses were related . Each
god had their own followers and were all considered the god of something. For example, Athena is
known as the Goddess of Wisdom and Hades is the God of the Dead or God of the Underworld. Greek
citizens built large temples to honor a particular god where the god was thought to live.
Within these temples, religious ceremonies were not held as we hold mass in a church. Instead, the
temple for each god and goddess were considered the living place of whoever it was built in honor to.
The most notable would the be the temple to Athena which is showcased in the photo to the left . In
each temple, a statue of the god was placed for worshipers to live

Freedom Of Religious Freedom
Freedom of religion When we say freedom of religion what is that exactly means? The First
Amendment describe the right of religion like this, everyone in the United States can practice to any
religion or not practice a religion. (Your Right to Religious Freedom) In the united states, there is no
an official religion and the government do not give any support for any religion institution because of
the government want to encourage and promoting religion in any ways. In addition to that, nobody can
penalize any citizen because of their religious beliefs. It s always best to keep the government out of
religion to protect religion liberty. The three United States founders were different religious
backgrounds. As most of us know the public schools are run by the government and they obey the
First Amendment. When any public education institution teach about the impacts of religion in
literature, history and philosophy they can t indorse religious beliefs or practices as part of the
catalogue. In the United States no one can prayer, theological reading and loudspeaker spiritual breach
in any public area that runs by government because they promote religion and this is protected by the
First Amendment, but when we say this we it s not including individuals. Individual have the right to
practice their religion, pray when and where ever they want to, as long as they don t interrupt other
people or activities for example, by forcing others to pray with them or practice their religion.

  • 2. Feminsim in Like Water For Chocolate by Laura Esquivel Essay How does the author of Like Water for Chocolate depict her feminist views and how do they contribute to two different themes of the novel? In the novel Like Water for Chocolate, Laura Esquivel exposes her strong feminist attitude through a controlling first person limited narration and a detailed, descriptive portrayal of the characters. This exploitation of feminist views supports two major themes: change in traditional attitudes towards authority and freedom of expression. In this novel, Laura Esquivel shows how Mexican women can overcome the powerful traditional authority of men and the traditional mindset of women; and how women can overcome society s suppression and express themselves freely. . These two themes have a direct ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The narrator can manipulate certain vies on certain characters. For example, throughout the novel the reader obtains Tita s bashful point of view on Rosaura and Mama Elena s arrogance and ignorance. If the narration would be something like third person omniscient, it would be up to the reader to decide whether or not you think Tita is saying the truth, or if she s just being a selfish, immature teenager that can handle growing up. Esquivel uses the first person narrator to implore her feminist message and point of vie across to the reader Change in attitude towards authority and freedom of expression can be seen through the way the narrator creates sympathy for Tita and creates a masculine, authoritative character for Mama Elena. Tita represents the woman who can think as an individual moving on and changing dominant authoritative views on her and that can express herself freely. Mama Elena has the mannish attitude and character because she represents the woman that has already gone through years of suppression and plans to suppress her daughter just like they did to her. Tita being the last child is obliged to take care of her mother until she passes away, this silly tradition does not let her marry or have a family of her own. Mama Elena also can also represent men, who have suppressed women forever in Mexico; but Laura Esquivel s main intention is to show woman s suppression of women. • 3. Hlu Persuasive Essay Hulu has been one of the best competing online television viewing services, along with Netflix, Amazon Instant Video and Google Videos, and has been my favorite choice to view all kinds of TV Shows. An interesting and captivating show is the Chef Race: UK. Vs. US. the Season 1. It comprises of several Episodes playing on Hulu. The fierceness, endurance and ultimate test of culinary and entrepreneurial skills cannot be overemphasize as fourteen home cooks representing US. and Uk., seven from each country, compete for an opportunity of only one person to win the ultimate prize of $100,000. In particular, Episode 6, Hot Sauce Hustle, is the latest I have watched and has not come short on its delivery of the heated battles I have always enjoyed. It is a 43 minutes video. The contestants, home cooks, are given tasks and expected to execute them in a timely and efficient manner. The Episode s tasks require the contestants, separated into two groups, UK. Vs. US., to, first, create an excellent hot barbeque sauce from a natural farm produce, brand them into their unique bottles, and label them appropriately. Second, they were required to sale these bottles of barbeque hot sauce to maximize profits with the limited resources available within the period of 2 ... At these stage, it is not surprises that the pressure will surely have the better of the cooks as each prepares to throw everything in to remain in the competition. This is where the better chef prevails and rivalry is put to rest as chef are been blessed with the opportunity to knockout the biggest competition and as well been caused with the worse nightmare of being eliminated by the ... Henry, Jimmy Valentine was a criminal who moved to Elmore, a small town in Arkansas, looking for a fresh start. He changed his name and fell in love with the bank owner s daughter. Valentine had a detective looking for him, the detective s name is Ben Price. Jimmy was going to give up his robbing bank tools so he would be able to change for his fiance. On his way to give away the tools Jimmy went to the bank to observe the new vault, a child got trapped in the vault and Jimmy used his bank robbing tools to save the child. He changed his name when he first came to town so the cops would not be able to find him also so no one would suspect he was a robber. This argument is invalid because the detective Ben Price found Jimmy and thought that he was a changed man so Ben did not arrest him. In the letter Jimmy lied about going to Little Rock to give away his tools he actually was going to rob another bank. There is no evidence to support that Jimmy was going to Little Rock to rob another bank. Finally Jimmy did not change for Annabel he only acted different so she would like Jimmy and he would be able to get close to the bank to rob it. Jimmy fell in love with Annabel the first time he saw her, Annabel thought fondly of him so Jimmy was not only acting different to rob the bank. All of these arguments can not be supported by evidence so Jimmy was able to change. Since Jimmy Valentine wanted to change for his fiance, was going to give away his bank robbing tools and changed his name so he could have a fresh start, Jimmy Valentine is a new, changed man. • 6. What Is The Difference Between Danny Saunders And Reuven The Chosen (TRAAS) Danny Saunders and Reuven Malters could not be more different in appearance. Following Hasidic traditions, Danny had long earlocks, wore a tzitzit, and wore shoes with a metal bottom. Also, by he is in college his beard is full grown. The only aspect, appearance wise, that the boys had in common in the beginning of the story were their black skullcaps. Reuven had always worn glasses, but after spending countless years reading every chance he got, Danny needed them too. The stress caused by the reading and from the pressures of his family became too much on his eyes and they started to turn red and develop bags underneath them. As the firstborn son, Danny had known, for as long as he could remember, that he was to take his father s place as tzaddik and lead his own congregation. He insulted him multiple times when Danny visited him in the hospital and told him to leave without even listening to him. But when he told his father about what he did, he was told to make Danny his friend and not to push him away. The next day, Danny came to visit him again. He apologized for his behavior the previous day and accepted Danny s apology to him. After Reuven put aside his anger at the Hasidic boy they were able to become friends. Containing four artificial lakes (among which Lake Anne and Lake Thoreau are the most famous), the town encompasses a total area of 17.4 square miles. According to the 2010 census, Reston s population is 56,407 residents. Founded in 1964, modern Reston is internationally known as the first planned residential community. Reston s history began in 1649, when King Charles II of England assigned vast areas of land in Northern Virginia to seven of his supporters. During the 18th century, Lord Fairfax the descendant of the original land owners decided to auction it off for $5 per acre. In 1886, the property which later became Reston was bought by William Dunn and Dr. Carl Wiehle. For several years, Dr. Wiehle drafted plans for what he imagined to become a Utopian new city. In 1862 President Lincoln and congress created the income tax to help fund the Civil War, but was later removed after 10 years (IRS, 2016). In 1894 Congress tried to reenact the income tax but the Supreme Court Stated it was unconstitutional. In 1913, with the 16th amendment, Congress was able yet again to bring back income tax, which helped to pay for World War I and II. • 9. Dream Of The Rood Comparison Dream of the Rood takes on a perspective that is unfamiliar for anyone with knowledge on the crucifixion of Christ. The narrator emphasizes the loyalty of the cross to Christ and how beautiful it looks because it is covered in gems. Using his vision as a means to connect to the reader, he takes us through his dream in three parts. To effectively communicate with his audience, the narrator must make us remember our experience with the crucifixion. I must say that I am glad I sat down and watched it in its entirety. My first opinion was totally wrong. After watching the movie, I now understand the buzz that followed it. It was a classic story of a man who comes across a treasure and believes that it just must have been his lucky day. The ultimate suspense comes at the end where a massive shootout happens at the motel where Llewelyn is at, and is killed. Also you know that Anton is still on the loose, and still does not have the treasure he seeks which is now with the mob. The movie ends as a cliffhanger when you see Sheriff Ed Tom Bell (Tommy Lee Jones) telling his wife about the two dreams he had the night before. Both dreams are about his father who has already passed. Unable to remember what the first dream was about, he goes on to explain the second. In the second dream, he describes his dad riding on pass him on horseback as if he did not know his own son. He goes on to say that his dad is going to a place to make a fire to stay by in the cold and dark world. My interpretation of the dream is that the cold and dark place represents death, but the light from the fire represents life. The fire is a symbol for the sheriff s life and his father being beside it means he is always with his son. After he finishes telling his wife, the movies just goes off. Overall the Finnish school system most likely wouldn t work in the United States, if implemented at a national level. Our two countries are just too different to transfer curriculums smoothly. The United States should seek advice from Finnish educators though, to design a system of our own that fits our particular needs. Impact Of Orientalism In Western Music History is about the present as much as it is concerned with the past because the past forms the foundation of how things are today which will also become history in years to come. As my own practice is music heavily influenced by the west, I will be exploring the definition of Orientalism and The Primitive and Pagan in Contemporary Art with some analysis of their long history before identifying their effects on today s western music. Famous orientalist, Edward Said, explained in his book Orientalism that through European colonization, the Europeans established orientalism, the study of Orientals, as a way to define themselves as the superior race compared to Orientals and justify their colonization. As the study of Orientals expanded, Westerners generalized attributes of Easterners and started forming their own knowledge about Easterners. Hence, Orientalism can now be defined as Western stereotypes about Eastern people. By this definition, orientalism can be found in rock music like Arabian Knights by Siousie and The Banshees and has affected the way lyrics are written in songs. Holes Persuasive Essay After reading Louis Sachar s novel Holes then watching the film adaptation by Andrew Davis, I can without a doubt say that I enjoyed watching the movie more than reading the novel. I found the novel to be detailed, however, boring and unenjoyable due to its slow pace and confusing structure. When I watched the movie, I really liked the emotion and passion, the simplicity and clear structure and the entertaining and amusing action and comedy aspects. These are the factors that contribute to why I believe that the film Holes is more enjoyable than the novel Holes . Whilst reading the novel, I never experienced any passion or emotion. I felt that the novel was descriptive but just not captivating to audiences. When reading Holes I definitely found myself losing focus and interest. This may be due to the slow pace and difficulty to picture each scene realistically. Time after time, I found myself unengaged and unwilling to continue the novel due to its lack of emotional description. However, in the movie, actually watching the scenes be bought to life engaged audiences and, during major scenes in the plot, enhanced the audiences experience using drama, realism and passion. Dr. Jekyll knew he was risking his life before he started but he thought it would be worth it to get to be the other side of him for once. The Cause And Effects Of The Little Ice Age Little Ice Age For five centuries, Europe basked in warm, settled weather, with only the occasional bitter winters, cool summers and memorable storms. Summer after summer passed with long, dreamy days, golden sunlight and bountiful harvests. Compared with what was to follow, these centuries were a climatic golden age. (Homewood)The cold weather of these centuries lead to the growth of Glaciers. Glaciers form when snow stays in the same area year round, and them becomes ice. Each year the new layer add to the old ones and it forms a big pile of ice. Eventually the air pockets get smaller and the ice gets tighter compacted. For most Glaciers take about 100 years to go through the process.(National Snow) Due to the Cold climate and starvation, the Little Ice age killed off a huge amount of the Northern Hemisphere between the 13th and 19th centuries. There is no telling what happened to cause the Little Ice Age. Many scientists have tried to figure this mystery out. Short term and long term memory decide whether we are able to retrieve the information or not (Mastin, 2010). Sensory and short term memory is less than one minute of storage and because of that they have no use for explicit and implicit memory. Both are found and used to breakdown long term memory. Explicit memory is the use of conscious thinking for the use of recall of important facts or events. Implicit memory is the opposite; it is the use of unconscious thinking of information and reaction. For example, texting, walking, or writing, on does not simply stop to think how to preform those actions (McLeod, 2007). To further breakdown explicit and implicit memory we use declarative and procedural memory. Declarative memory corresponds with explicit memory because it engages in conscious thinking to recall factual information. Procedural memory corresponds with implicit memory because it is the basic repetition of facts that do not take much into consideration. • 32. Greek Beliefs In Ancient Greek Mythology Greek mythology is one of the most interesting topics to come out of ancient Greek culture. The idea of sincerely believing that every move or choice that is made all goes back to the gods and goddesses fascinates me. In ancient Greece, the normal thing was to believe in multiple higher powers instead of today were majority dictates that there is only one higher power. I was aware of some facts about the Greek s belief in the god and goddesses from previous history classes but I have never at the freedom to choose to write a paper solely on them. The goal of my research was to find out what made the gods and goddesses so special to the Greeks and why a civilization would worship them for centuries. The start of believing in the gods and goddesses started as a way to explain daily life and to give life a purpose . Without a reason for living majority of people would descend into madness with no morals. Unlike other religions that had a holy text, mythology was based primarily on word of mouth. The stories were passed down from generation to generation to create the outlandish but captivating mythology that we have in modern society. While there were countless gods and goddesses, students do typically learn the 12 that are called the Olympian Gods . This group was led by Zeus, who is perhaps is the most well known Greek god. The next 11 were named as followed, Athena, Apollo, Poseidon, Hermes, Hera, Aphrodite, Demeter, Ares, Artemis, Hades, Hephaistos, and Dionysus. I have attached a family tree to help showcases how majority of the gods and goddesses were related . Each god had their own followers and were all considered the god of something. For example, Athena is known as the Goddess of Wisdom and Hades is the God of the Dead or God of the Underworld. Greek citizens built large temples to honor a particular god where the god was thought to live. Within these temples, religious ceremonies were not held as we hold mass in a church. Instead, the temple for each god and goddess were considered the living place of whoever it was built in honor to. The most notable would the be the temple to Athena which is showcased in the photo to the left . In each temple, a statue of the god was placed for worshipers to live ...
