- 9. CASE EXAMPLE - ALMA • Prior to come to the U.S., Alma was attending high school and motivated to pursue a career. When she graduated, her parents decided that she was going to go to the U.S. Her parent’s promised her that she would continue her education in the U.S. • Her parents sent her across the U.S. with 2 coyotes who were in the business of smuggling people and drugs into the U.S. When Alma arrived to California, Alma was forced to work at local night clubs under false identification. All of Alma’s wages were given to her coyotes. When Alma was older she was forced to work in a fruit packing company and forced to clean the house where she was kept. Alma controlled none of her earnings. • When Alma did not obey, she was sexually abused and threatened with deportation. Alma escaped and reported to her local sheriffs office and they gave her the number to her local shelter.

A FEW BEST PRACTICES • Assess client needs and following through. • Establish (and constantly update a good network of specialized service providers and supportive groups • Create a quick access system for pro-bono attorneys, interpreters, and shelter/housing • Sustain a good working relationship with law enforcement and government agencies to build mutual trust.
