It is very vital to understand that librarians, archivists, information professionals among others, really understand the importance of knowing how to disseminate proper information as well as being responsible with their actions when addressing information.[3]
Information ethics has evolved to relate to a range of fields such as computer ethics,[4] medical ethics, journalism[5] and the philosophy of information.
Dilemmas regarding the life of information are becoming increasingly important in a society that is defined as "the information society". The explosion of so much technology has brought information ethics to a forefront in ethical considerations. Information transmission and literacy are essential concerns in establishing an ethical foundation that promotes fair, equitable, and responsible practices. Information ethics broadly examines issues related to ownership, access, privacy, security, and community. It is also concerned with relational issues such as "the relationship between information and the good of society, the relationship between information providers and the consumers of information".[6]
Information technology affects common issues such as copyright protection, intellectual freedom, accountability, privacy, and security. Many of these issues are difficult or impossible to resolve due to fundamental tensions between Western moral philosophies (based on rules, democracy, individual rights, and personal freedoms) and the traditional Eastern cultures (based on relationships, hierarchy, collective responsibilities, and social harmony).[7] The multi-faceted dispute between Google and the government of the People's Republic of China reflects some of these fundamental tensions.

ANALYSIS: This January the European Data Protection Supervisor presented his new “Ethics Advisory Group”. A group of experts that will help him “reconsider the ethical dimension of the relationships between human rights, technology, markets and business models and their implications for the rights to privacy and data protection in the digital environment.” He is not the first European decision maker or thought leader to bring forward ethics as a guiding principle in the digital age. Over the last year digital ethics, and in particular data ethics, have become the “talk of the town” in Europe. Based on the realisation that laws have not followed pace with the development of digital technologies, technologists, academics, policymakers and businesses are today revisiting cultural values and moral systems when groping for a new ethical framework for the digital age.
Ethics of Technology
Technological developments have in history always at some point during their implementation into society forced us to revisit laws, but in particular also ethical value systems and limits. Time and again we are faced with the fact that technology is in fact not neutral, but contain in their very design ethical implications. The photograph was in its early stage of implementation in the late 19thand early 20th century, discussed as both art and reality. This discussion entered the court rooms and the legal rights over a photograph were determined. It was however not only legal rights that were defined, but a delineation of the very ethical implications of a technology (the camera, the photograph) that could reproduce the appearance of an individual with such accuracy. It was an examination of the particularly human consequences (distress and humiliation) of the capacities of this new technology. Defining a right and wrong and attempting to morally manage its implications for individuals.
What we experience these years is a pace of technological developments as never seen before. Not only did the World Wide Web and the capacities of digital technologies develop over just a few decades, but the digital evolution expanded into practically every area of life and society over an even shorter period of time. It only took a few years after Tim Berners Lee invented an open source information space interlinked by hyperlinks in 1989 before the first online businesses emerged and ordinary people started using internet services in the mid 1990s.
Evidently laws have not followed pace with the countless ethical implications of today’s rapid technological development. Now we are questioning the ethics of automatic systems designed to collect data on us en masse, algorithms designed to predict and profile us, technologies used to surveil us and manipulate us and not the least business models profiting from the most private details on individuals. Apply decision-making frameworks to IT-related ethical issues
There are several ethical theories described in Module 1: Ethical Theories. Module 2: Methods of Ethical Decision Making, describes frameworks for ethical analysis. For this paper, use the Reynolds Seven-Step approach to address the following:
· Describe a current IT-related ethical issue; and define a problem statement
· Analyze your problem using a decision-making framework chosen from Module 2.
· Discuss the applicable ethical theory from Module 1 that supports your decision.
· Prepare a minimum 3- 5 page, double-spaced paper.
· Use APA style and format. Provide appropriate American Psychological Association (APA) reference citations for all sources. In addition to critical thinking and analysis skills, your paper should reflect appropriate grammar and spelling, good organization, and proper business-writing style.
Each of Reynolds seven steps must be a major heading in your paper.
Here are some suggested issues-
1. Workplace Issue.
2. Privacy on the Web. What is happening now in terms of privacy on the Web? Think about recent abuses and improvements. Describe and evaluate Web site policies, technical and privacy policy protections, and current proposals for government regulations.
3. Personal Data Privacy Regulations in Other Countries. Report on personal data privacy regulations, Web site privacy policies, and governmental/law enforcement about access to personal data in one or more countries; e.g., the European Union. This is especially relevant as our global economic community expands and we are more dependent on non-US clients for e-Business over the Internet. (Note: new proposed regulations are under review in Europe.)
4. Spam. Describe new technical solutions and the current state of regulation. Consider the relevance of freedom of speech. Discuss the roles of technical and legislative solutions.
5. Computer-Based Crimes. Discuss the most prevalent types of computer crimes, such as Phishing. Analyze why and how these can occur. Describe protective measures that might assist in preventing or mitigating these types of crimes.
6. Government surveillance of the Internet. The 9/11 attacks on the US in 2001 brought many new laws and permits more government surveillance of the Internet. Is this a good idea? Many issues are cropping up daily in our current periodicals!
7. The Digital Divide. Does it exist; what does it look like; and, what are the ethical considerations and impact?
8. Privacy in the Workplace: Monitoring Employee Web and E-Mail Use. What are current opinions concerning monitoring employee computer use. What policies are employers using? Should this be authorized or not? Policies are changing even now!
9. Medical Privacy. Who owns your medical history? What is the state of current legislation to protect your health information? Is it sufficient? There are new incentives with federal stimulus financing for health care organizations to de.

1. What do we mean when we talk about ‘ethics’?
Ethics in the broadest sense refers to the concern that humans have always had for figuring out
how best to live. The philosopher Socrates is quoted as saying in 399 B.C. that “the most important
thing is not life, but the good life.”2 We would all like to avoid a bad life, one that is shameful
and sad, fundamentally lacking in worthy achievements, unredeemed by love, kindness, beauty,
friendship, courage, honor, joy, or grace. Yet what is the best way to obtain the opposite of this
– a life that is not only acceptable, but even excellent and worthy of admiration? How do we
identify a good life, one worth choosing from among all the different ways of living that lay open
to us? This is the question that the study of ethics attempts to answer.
Today, the study of ethics can be found in many different places. As an academic field of study,
it belongs primarily to the discipline of philosophy, where it is studied either on a theoretical
level (‘what is the best theory of the good life?’) or on a practical, applied level as will be our
focus (‘how should we act in this or that situation, based upon our best theories of ethics?’). In
community life, ethics is pursued through diverse cultural, religious, or regional/local ideals and
practices, through which particular groups give their members guidance about how best to live.
This political aspect of ethics introduces questions about power, justice, and responsibility. On a
personal level, ethics can be found in an individual’s moral reflection and continual strivings to
become a better person. In work life, ethics is often formulated in formal codes or standards to
which all members of a profession are held, such as those of medical or legal ethics. Professional
ethics is also taught in dedicated courses, such as business ethics. ...

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

- 3. A New Legal and Social Environment In the past 10 years, it’s one of the most challenges periods for Asian and global business. In that some cases demonstrating failed ethical judgment by senior and middle managers. Example:- The Satyam Computers A Chairman Ramalinga Raju, of this company produced false accounts to the board to show inflated profits and keep trading of stock.
- 4. A New Legal and Social Environment In today’s new legal environment, managers who break the law and are declare guilty will most likely spend time in prison. Managers today will have to be careful in making ethical judgment.
- 5. Ethics Principles of right and wrong. Assume individuals are acting as free moral agent to make choice to guide their behavior.
- 6. Information technology create ethics issues because: (a) IT changes the distribution of decision making rights, and other resources. Example: IT makes it possible for millions of people to download video files, weakening the distribution for their profit.
- 7. Information technology create ethics issues because : (b) IT creates new opportunities to commit crimes. Example : E- mail creates the condition for extensive “phishing” or online con games design to defraud ordinary citizen.
- 8. A Model For Thinking About Ethical , Social And Politics. Ethical, social and political issues are closely linked. The ethical is typically reflected in social and political debate. Imagine society a one pond , a delicate ecosystem in partial equilibrium with individual and with social and political institution. Individual knows how to do act in the pond. Because the social institutions have developed rules of behavior.
- 9. Now toss a rock into the center of the pond . What happen? Ripples occur. The new information technology has ripple effects, raising new ethical, social and political issues that must be dealt with on individual , social and political level. That issues have a five moral dimensions.

Nevertheless, information technology has heightened ethical concerns, taxed existing social arrangements and made some law obsolete or severely crippled. The doubling of computing power every 18 month has made it possible for most organisation to use information system for their core production process.

Advance in data storage techniques and rapidly declining storage costs have been responsible for the multiplying databases on individuals- employees ,customers and potential customers – maintained by private and public organizations. These advance in data storage have made the routine violation of individual privacy both cheap and effective.
