Besides the Pyramids Other Egyptian Architecture
But first! Let’s Clarify Something
A Ziggurat
A Step Pyramid
And these are pyramids
Okay, now we can move on.
Obelisks Think Washington Monument  Dedicated to the sun god Ra (to which they point) Carved with hieroglyphics honoring whatever Pharaoh was current Tapered monoliths (remember that word?)
Also a great souvenir! When Egypt was conquered by foreigners, the troops would take the obelisks home….
Rome, Italy
Istanbul, Turkey
Paris, France
London, England
Central Park, New York City
But there are still some in Egypt (Temple in Thebes)
Temples Step 1: Choose a god Step 2: Build a big doorway Step 3: Flank it with obelisks and statues of pharaohs and gods Step 4: Add more columns in a hall of huge pillars Step 5: Finish with a shrine to that god (a statue on a pedestal), plus a few extra rooms for the priests.
Temple at Luxor (not Vegas)
Egypt had a lot of clay (Nile!), so the temples were made of thick brick walls Outsides were etched and painted with hieroglyphics and other symbols The roof was made of stone slabs (not much wood in Egypt) To support the stone slabs, they used thick stone columns placed close together. = Post-and-Lintel architecture
Post and Lintel Two vertical beams (posts) + One horizontal beam (lintel)
Ramesseum Memorial Tomb of Ramses II c. 1250 BC
Hypostyle Hall at the Temple of Amen-Re (1280 BC) In Karnak, Luxor A Tour

Columns were often carved like Lotus Flowers (symbol of Lower Egypt), the Papyrus (Upper Egypt), or both entwined together
Queen Hatshepsut’s Temple c. 1450 BC
And finally, the Great Sphinx of Giza c. 2550 BC
It is the largest monolith statue in the world It is the oldest known monumental sculpture, Is commonly believed to have been built in the reign of the pharaoh Khafra/Khafre
