Adenia cessampeloides is a popular plant whose stem is used as fish poison by the local people in
Ohaukwu local government area of Rivers- state in Nigeria. Its leaves are however, consumed locally for its
high nutrient quality. Here, the Adenia cessampeloides stem aqueous extract on malondialdehyde(MDA) and
superoxide dismutase(SOD) in Clara patrichus(fishes) were studied using standard methods. The results
showed that MDA decreased as the concentration of the extract increased and SOD activity also increased as
the concentration of the extract increased. The results also showed that oxidative stress or cellular damages
might be prevented by use of the plant stem extract

Itaconic acid (IA) is an organic acid. It is used in medicine, resins, agriculture, and polymer production. In the present study, sediment sample was collected aseptically from Vellar estuary, Parangipettai, Tamil Nadu, India. As a result of the tested strains Aspergillus terreus was observed as the most potential strain. Optimization was done at different temperatures (25–45°C), in different pH (5.0–7.0). The impact of salinity on IA production was evaluated using various salinity (5–25 ppt), carbon sources (1% w/v of glucose, sucrose, dextrose, and maltose), nitrogen sources (0.5% sodium nitrate, ammonium nitrate, and potassium nitrate), and cheaper sources (1% w/v molasses, jackfruit waste, wheat bran, and coconut oil cake). As a result optimized culture condition for IA production was 1% w/v of glucose - best carbon source, 1% w/v molasses - best cheaper carbon source, 0.5% of sodium nitrate - best nitrogen source, salinity - 20 ppt, temperature - 40°C, and pH - 5.5 and incubation time – 96 h. Compared to glucose (0.41 mg/ml) production of IA was high when molasses (0.61 mg/ml) was used as carbon source, it is also economically good. Mass scale culture was done using molasses instead of glucose with an optimized parameter. After mass scale culture, IA production was 6.3g/l.

Erratic swimming movements with hyperactivity, loss of equilibrium, augmented air gulping and decreased food consumption were observed in the experimental groups. In co-exposure groups of arsenic and fluoride, the concentration of fluoride in fish tissues increased with increasing water fluoride concentration in the test aquaria with significant differences (P<0.01)><0.05)>0.05) among the exposure groups. Arsenic was observed to exceedingly bioaccumulate and biomagnify in the tissues. Perhaps due to the complex formation of arsenic and fluoride the bio concentration of arsenic in tissues was observed to decrease with increasing water fluoride concentration and vice-versa. The study concludes that fluoride may interfere with the bio-concentration of arsenic.

Protective Effects of Alpha Lipoic Acid (α -LA) Against Lead Neuro-Toxicity i...inventionjournals
Aim of the work: The present study was conducted to elucidate the possible protective effect of alpha lipoic acid (α-LA) against the deleterious effect perturbation induced in rat brain exposed to lead acetate. Methods: 32 Wistar male rats (weighing 130 ± 10 g) were divided into four groups (n=8): (1) normal control group (C); (2) Initiation group (Pb as lead acetate 20 mg/kg.b.wt, i.p. for 2 wks); (3) treatment group (α-LA 20 mg/kg.b.wt, i.p. for 3 wks); (4) post-initiation treatment group (Pb for 2 wks then followed by α-LA for 3 wks). Levels of monoamines (norepinephrine NE and dopamine DA), the level of Ache activity and finally adenosine triphosphate (ATP), were estimated in the hippocampus and cerebral cortex, in addition, a Morris water maze and the histological study were performed after completion of the experiments. Results: The results of the present work demonstrated that Pb inhibited neurotransmitters releases and decrease the level of Ache activity, as well as it inhibited energy production ATP. Pb impaired performance on Morris Water Maze of rats and histological degeneration. However, treatment with α-LA significantly attenuated the behavioral impairment and biochemical parameters in rat treated with Pb. And amelioration of histological changes. Conclusion: As a conclusion, treatment with α-LA can improve the Pb-induced toxicity via antioxidant activity.
Toxic Effect of Glyphosate-Pesticide on Lipid Peroxidation Superoxide Dismuta...Scientific Review SR
The oxidative stress indices lipid peroxidation (LPO), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) in juvenile Clarias gariepinus (average weight 200.15 g) exposed to sub - lethal dose 2.40mg/L and 4.98mg/L of glyphosate was investigated over a period of days 1,5,10 and 15 in three replicates. The colorimetric analysis showed increase in lipid peroxidation from 4.55 ±2.14a1 to 12.12± 10.00a1at 2.40mg/L but remain the same at 4.98mg/L (4.55±2.14a1) compared with control (3.03±0.01a1 to 1.51±2.14b1) from day 1 to 15. The SOD activity decreased significantly with time and concentration compared with control. The Catalase activity at day 15 decreased to 0.17±0.05a1 in 2.40mg/L but further increased to 0.28±0.05b1 in 4.98mg/L compared to 0.28±0.02a1 catalase activity as control. The result suggests that glyphosate induce oxidative stress that may overwhelm the antioxidant system in juvenile catfish especially at higher concentrations with long exposure.

mutagenic so removal of azo dyes using cost-effective and eco-friendly method is
major aspect.Comamonas acidovorans MTCC 3364 has been routinely reported for
different steroid bioconversion and heavy metal removal. The main purpose of this
study is to check the decolorization efficiency of Comamonas acidovorans MTCC
3364 for different dyes and to optimize the condition which gives maximum
decolorization of Reactive Orange 16 dye. The effect of various physicochemical
parameters including condition, carbon and nitrogen sources, temperature,pH and
dye concentration were studied. The % decolorization of dye was determined by
UV Visible spectroscopy. This bacterial strain efficiently decolorizes Reactive
Orange 16 at 37oC, pH 6.85 within 24 hours giving 99.03 ± 0.5 % dye
decolorization under optimum environmental conditions.

ABSTRACT : Currently, marine organisms are a very important source of new molecules in pharmacology and thus in the development of new bioactive products. Sponges, in particular, given their very primitive origin and persistence during evolution, have developed a chemical defense system.The chemical study of Cinachyrella tarentina, marine sponge recognized by its antibacterial and antifungal activity was investigated for the first time in Morocco. The screening of Cinachyrella tarentina revels that it contains different levels of primary and secondary metabolites. The dosage of polyphenols was carried out using the reagent Foulin-Ciocalteu. The antioxidant activity was evaluated by the DPPH test. The fatty acid composition determined by Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) showed a predominance of palmitic and stearic acids. Furthermore, we found the presence of several sterols which cholesterol and sitosterol are the most abundants. Acute Toxicity of Lufenuron (Insecticide) on Oreochromis niloticus (L., 1754)...IJERA Editor
In this study, lufenuron (insecticide) acute toxic effects on larvae of Oreochromis niloticus (L., 1754) used in intensively cotton and corn farming in agricultural areas inside of Çukurova Region was investigated by bioassay method for to be informed about the possible adverse effects that may be caused in the aquatic environment. The study was carried out with 25 ± 2 oC in the laboratory and the test fish which an average weight of 1.36±0.5 g and average length 5.56±0.6 cm in aquariums by two replicates according to the static bioassay method. Data were analysed by log-logistic model statistical analysis method 24-h and 48-h LC50 values were calculated fish mortality in statistical analysis considering the observed acute toxic effects of the investigation lufenuron O. niloticus larvae 24-hour LC50 1.80±0.06 mgl-1 , while the 48-hour LC 50 value is calculated as LC50 1.77±0.04 mgl-1

A pilot study on effect of copper and cadmium toxicity in Tilapia Mossambicusresearchanimalsciences
Cu and Cd is trace element for most organisms including fish, but above certain limit Cu and Cd will be toxic. The present study was conducted to evaluate the toxic effect of Cu and Cd on Tilapia mossambicus via estimating the acute 96h median lethal concentration (LC50) value. A total 120 number of Tilapia mossambicus fingerlings were subjected to 12 numbers 20-L aquaria. Fish were exposed to 0.0, 2.0, 4.0, 6.0, 8.0 and 10.0mg Cu and Cd/L for 4 days. Each dose was represented by two aquaria. Fish was daily observed and dead fish were removed immediately. The data obtained were evaluated using Behrens-Karber’s Method. The 96 h LC50 value of Cu for Tilapia mossambicus was calculated to be 6.0mg Cu/L with Behrens-Karber’s Method. The 96 h LC50 value of Cd for Tilapia mossambicus was calculated to be 4.8mg Cd/L with Behrens-Karber’s Method. The behavioral changes of Tilapia mossambicus were primarily observed. It could be concluded that Tilapia mossambicus species slightly sensitive to Cu and Cd when compare both metal cadmium is more toxic than copper for the fish species.

Fishing Industry Waste Water Treatment by PolyelectrolytesIJAEMSJORNAL
The fishing industries consume huge amount of water and also produce tonnes of waste water from fish preservation and fish tanks. The fishing industry wastewater treatment can be done by sequence of treatment processes such as sedimentation, coagulation. Characteristics of fishing industry wastewater are the color is light brown, pH is 8, COD is 576.0mg/l, BOD3 is 185.0mg/l, VSS is 0.56mg/L, TSS is 110.5mg/l, conductivity is 39300.0µs/cm, oil and grease is 2.1mg/l, fecal coliform is >2400MPN, total phosphorous is 22.6mg/l, total nitrogen is 60.0mg/l, ammonical nitrogen is <0.05, TOC is 20.8mg/l and turbidity is 3.9NTU. The optimum dosage of aluminium chloride as a polyelectrolyte is found to be 100mg/l, optimum pH is 7 and optimum time 30min. The reduction in turbidity for the fishing industry wastewater is 79%, reduction in BOD3 is 65%, reduction in COD is 66%, reduction in TSS is 87% and reduction in VSS is 61%, conductivity is 41%, oil and grease is 90%, total phosphorous is 94%, total nitrogen is 67% and TOC is 95% by the influence of the polyelectrolyte aluminium chloride. Optimum dosage of bentonite clay is 500mg/l, optimum pH is 6 and optimum time 45min. The reduction in turbidity for the fishing industry waste water is 62%, reduction in BOD3 is 58%, reduction in COD is 61%, reduction in TSS is 80% and reduction in VSS is 73%, conductivity is 40%, oil and grease is 81%, total phosphorous is 92%, total nitrogen is 50% and TOC is 94% by the influence of the polyelectrolyte bentonite clay. Optimum dosage of ferrous sulphate monohydrate is 300mg/l, optimum pH is 7 and optimum time 45min. The reduction in turbidity for the fishing industry wastewater is 18%, reduction in BOD3 is 49%, reduction in COD is 56%, reduction in TSS is 69% and reduction in VSS is 39%, conductivity is 30%, oil and grease is 76%, total phosphorous is 93% and TOC is 94% by the influence of the polyelectrolyte ferrous sulphate monohydrate. There is no change in fecal coliform and ammonical nitrogen by the effect of these polyelectrolytes. Similarly there is no change in total nitrogen by the effect of ferrous sulphate monohydrate.

ABSTRACT- Comparative toxicity of Nerium indicum latex powder (NILP) was studied against two common predatory and weed fishes of different body size in laboratory condition and cemented and muddy pond. LC50 of NILP for predatory fish Channa punctatus was 2.13 mg/L, 7.80 mg/L and 19.26 mg/L to small size, middle size and large size fish respectively in laboratory condition after 24 h exposure periods. Similar trends were also observed in case of cemented and muddy ponds but doses were 1-4 times higher than laboratory conditions. Similar trend of result was also observed against weed fish Mystus mystus. No further mortality was observed beyond 24 h in all set of experiments suggested fast degradation of the toxicant in water.

Antiaging Effect of Leaves of Different Extract Salvia SplendensBRNSS Publication Hub
The objective of the present work is to study the in vitro antioxidant activities of petroleum ether,
ethyl acetate, and methanolic extracts of leaves of Salvia splendens. The extracts were studied using
1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), total phenolic content (TPC), and total
flavonoid content (TFC). The TPC and TFC were estimated taking gallic acid and rutin calibration curve,
respectively. All the extracts possess in vitro antioxidant activities. However, the order of possessing
activities was methanolic > ethyl acetate > petroleum ether extracts of leaves S. splendens. The TPC and
TFC were highest in methanolic extract. It can be concluded that the extract of the leaves of S. splendens,
possess antioxidant activities. The methanolic extract of leaves of S. splendens possesses highest antioxidant
activity in-vitro.

The properties of papaya fruit and other parts of the plant are also well known in traditional system of medicine. Papaya possess excellent medicinal properties for treatment of different ailments. These curative properties are based on the presence of phytochemical nutrients with antioxidant effect in different parts of the plant. It is considered as valuable nutraceutical fruit plant due to its biological activity and medicinal application.The present study was designed to determine the Cytoprotective and DNA protective activities of different fractions (Aqueous, Chloroform, Ethanol and Ethyl acetate extracts) of Carica papaya leaves. Cytoprotective capacity was assessed using erythrocytes, where ferrous sulphate was used to induce stress and the ability of the extracts to combat the induced stress was evaluated. The DNA protective potential against free radical-mediated oxidative stress was evaluated by a DNA damage inhibition assay involving agarose gel electrophoresis and UV spectrophotometric analysis. All the four fractions displayed significant cytoprotective effect on erythrocytes and prevented oxidative damage to DNA in presence of DNA damaging agent. Altogether, the results of our study lend pharmacological credence to the anti-cancerous and ethno medical use of this plant in traditional system of medicine and these resultscould be used to develop antimutagenic compounds for cancer therapy.

Loperamide (LOP) is an antidiarrheal agent that works by slowing gastrointestinal transit and reducing intestinal secretions. The aim of the study is to evaluate the effect of loperamide consumption for five days on the intestinal oxidative balance, as well as the putative protective effect of mallow leaves extract. Animals were divided into one normal control group and fi ve experimental groups. LOP, LOP + the different doses of the extract (100, 200, and 400 mg/ kg, b.w.), and LOP+ yohimbine (2 mg/ kg, b.w. p.i.), used as reference drug. Loperamide (3 mg/ kg, b.w. p.o) was administered twice a day, for 5 days. Treatment with mallow extract or yohimbine protected against the lipid peroxidation, antioxidant enzymes activity depletion, the fall in the thiol group and reduced glutathione level as well as jejunal free iron and H2O2 overload induced by loperamide intoxication. Thereby, Malva sylvestris aqueous extract (MSAE) attenuates the pathogenicity of loperamide.
ABSTRACT- L-Ascorbic acid derivatives was synthesized on treatment with acetone and acetyl chloride afforded 5,6-acetal of L-ascorbic acid then benzylation of C-2 and C-3 hydroxyl groups of the lactone ring was accomplished using K2CO3 and benzyl bromide in DMF, then deblocking of the 5,6-O,O-protected derivative of L-Ascorbic acid with acetic acid and methanol gave 2,3-O,O-dibenzyl-L-Ascorbic acid. Subsequently mono-tosylation at 6 position of 2,3-O, O-dibenzyl-L-Ascorbic acid was carried out with addition of p-toluenetosylchloride (PTSC) in Pyridine and MDC solvent medium gave 2,3-O,O-dibenzyl-6-O-tosyl-L-Ascorbic acid. All the structures were characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR and Mass Spectroscopy.

Purpose: Free radicals are considered as the causative agents of a variety of acute and chronic pathologies. Natural antioxidants have drawn attention of the researchers in recent years for their ability to scavenge free radicals with minimal or even no side effects. This study evaluates the antioxidant capacity of agathisflavone, a naturally occurring biflavonoid by a number of in vitro methods. Methods: Agathisflavone was subjected to DPPH, ABTS, OH and NO radical scavenging assay, reducing potential and inhibition of lipid peroxidation (TBARS) test using trolox as a standard. Results: Agathisflavone showed concentration-dependent antioxidant activity against all types of free radicals used in this study. The antioxidant capacity, reducing potential and inhibition of lipid peroxidation showed by agathisflavone were comparable to that of trolox. Conclusion: Agathisflavone exhibited antioxidant capacity, which suggests considering this biflavonoid for the use in the prevention and/or treatment of diseases precipitated by oxidative stress.

Aquatic oomycetous fungi often cause serious damage to fresh water fishes. Antifungal activity of acetone extracts of three fruticose lichens namely, Cladonia amaurocraea, Cladonia rangiferina and Usnea longissima were investigated against three pathogenic oomycete fungi which can cause serious saprolegniasis: Saprolegnia parasitica, Achlya bisexualis and Pythium sp.. Usnic acid was also examined for antifungal activity against the pathogenic fungi. The minimum inhibitory concentration of usnic acid and lichen extracts for the tested fungi Saprolegnia parasitica and Achlya bisexualis were 2 mg L-1, 200 mg L-1 respectively. The higher concentration was needed to inhibit mycelial growth of Pythium sp.. The result suggests that the potential of using usnic acid and lichen extracts for controlling the saprolegniasis.

Low temperature is an important environmental factor that limits the survival, productivity and geographical distribution of plants. Oil seeds are the second global food resources among which Brassica napus L. is the third annual oil seed in the world. In cold stress, some biochemical and physiological reactions occur in response to reactive oxygen species (ROS). Hence, the effect of foliar application of salicylic acid (SA) on total chlorophyll content, malondialdehyde, and antioxidant enzymes activity and solute protein and proline contents were assessed in two canola varieties (Brassica napus L., cv RGS and LICORD) leaves exposed to cold stress during 0, 24, and 48 hours after salicylic acid treatment. They were first grown in a controlled growth room at 22/20 °C (day/night) for one month followed by SA spraying application (100, 200 and 400µM) and then plots were transferred to a cold environment (-2 °C) for 3 days. The results showed that the total chlorophyll content was decreased in RGS cultivars related to high salicylic acid concentration during the experiment. The results of antioxidant status showed that superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POX), and also lipid peroxidation were increased significantly after 48 hours compared first day. Catalase (CAT) activity was decreased 24 hours after salicylic acid treatment. Results showed an increase in protein content in both cultivars treated with SA, by contrast proline was greatly affected by salicylic acid treatment and its content was the highest 24 hours after treatment. According to the results of the present study indicated that application of salicylic acid has useful effects on the biochemical traits. Thereupon it may be effective for the improvement of plant growth in cold regions.

Oxytenanthera abyssinica rhizomes have been used in the treatment of aliments varying from colics, diabetes, polyuria and albuminiura, these ethanomedicinal potencies have been attributed to its rich phytochemical contents and free radical scavenging capacity. This work is aimed at investigating the effect of crude oil pollution on total phenolic, flavonoids and free radical scavenging potentials of methanol extract of Oxytenanthera abyssinica rhizomes. The ability of the plant extracts to scavenge 2,2 diphenyl 1 picylhydrazyl DPPH , hydroxyl radical .OH , superoxide radical O2 , nitric oxide radical NO. and ability to inhibit lipid peroxidation was assayed following standard methods, spectrophotometric method was used to assay for total phenolic and flavonoid content. Non crude oil polluted O. abyssinica extract NCOPOAE and crude oil polluted O. abyssinica extract COPOAE in a concentration dependent manner showed a potent antioxidant activity in DPPH radical scavenging assay EC50= 1.03 ±0.01µg ml and EC50 = 1.04 ±1.01µg ml , inhibited hydroxyl radical EC50 = 1.17 ±1.02µg ml and EC50 = 1.46 ±1.21µg ml , superoxide anion radical EC50 =1.30 ±1.21µg ml and EC50 =1.51 ±1.42µg ml and nitric oxide EC50 = 1.40 ±1.23µg ml and EC50= 1.53 ±1.42µg ml also inhibited non enzymatic lipid peroxidation EC50 = 1.58 ±1.42µg ml and EC50 = 2.47 ±2.13µg ml and had more of phenolic and flavonoid contents than COPOAE. This result indicates that NCOPOAE contains more antioxidant compounds than COPOAE, which could make it more potent in ethanomedicinal use. The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Abstract: Adenia cessampeloides is a popular plant whose stem is used as fish poison by the local people in
Ohaukwu local government area of Rivers- state in Nigeria. Its leaves are however, consumed locally for its
high nutrient quality. Here, the Adenia cessampeloides stem aqueous extract on malondialdehyde(MDA) and
superoxide dismutase(SOD) in Clara patrichus(fishes) were studied using standard methods. The results
showed that MDA decreased as the concentration of the extract increased and SOD activity also increased as
the concentration of the extract increased. The results also showed that oxidative stress or cellular damages
might be prevented by use of the plant stem extract.

I. Introduction
The plant Adenia cessampeloides is an economically important plant that belongs to the family of
cessalpiniaceae that is used for fish harvesting in ponds of water, streams, etc (2). It is also a fish poison when
macerated and immersed in water because it kills fishes, more especially when it is fresh (2). It is greenish in
colour and has brown stems. The plant is found in many places in Ebonyi State. The leaves of the plants also
have high nutritional quality when consumed.lipid hydroperoxides are non-radical intermediates derived from
unsaturated fatty acids, phosphplipids, glycolipids, cholesterol esters and cholesterol itself (33). Their formation
occurs in enzymatic and enzymatic reactions involving activated chemical species known as “Reactive oxygen
species” (ROS) which are responsible for toxic effects in the body through various tissues damages. These
Reactive Oxygen Species include among others hydroxyl radicals,single oxygen, lipid oxyl or peroxyl radicals
and peroxylnitrite formed from nitrogen oxide(NO), all these groups of atoms behave as a unit and now named
free radicals(21). Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is metalloenzymes that catalyze the dismutation of superoxide
radical into hydrogen peroxide and molecular oxygen and consequently provide an important defence
mechanism against superoxide radicals’ toxicity (16). Oxidative stress dependent upon superoxide radical can
account for a number of acute and chronic disease states, include inflammation and ischemia-reperfusion. SOD
protects murine peritoreal macrophages from apoptotosis induced by adriamycine. Furthermore, SOD promotes
cell differentiation. Malondialdehyde (MDA) is formed also in some tissues by enzymatic processes with
prostalglandin precursors as substrates (6). Thus, thromboxane synthetase generates MDA with thromboxane
from prostaglandia endoperoxides during human platelete activation (10). It has also been proposed that MDA
could react physiologically with several nucleosides (deoxy-ginosine cytidine). Aldehydes are in general the
most important molecules responsible for the off-flavour in oxidized food for edible oils (31).
1.1Fish poison
Fish poison is a way of harvesting fish from a waterhole by using leaves which gives-off obnoxious
substances when soaked in water (14). This stuns the fish making them drunk so that so that they float to the
surface or onto the bank where they can be collected. Fishes collected this way are safe to eat (19). Fish poisons
are widely used like curae poison (Chondocendrum tomentosum),piscicides were commonly used,saponinins
which are active in the stem also contains a glucoside poison which is very effective in catching fishes. The
retonones are also fish poisons found in many leguminous plants like mimosaceae, cesalpiniaceae and more
commonly in the family of fabaceae.(19)
II. Materials and methods
2.1.1 Sample collection
The fishes were sacrificed hourly depending on the effect of the concentration of the extract. The blood
was collected by using surgical blade to open the thoraxic cavity, sterilized syringes were used to collect the
blood into different test tubes according to the effect of the concentration of the extracts and centrifuged
immediately at 3000rpm for 10 minutes and the supernatants were used for analyses.

2.2 Extraction method
A 400g weight of the Adenia cissampeloides stem was macerated or soaked in 400ml of water, the maceration
or soaking took 24 hours, this was filtered and then water and extracts reweighed (8).
Assay for lipid peroxidation(MDA)(20)
Principle
The chromophoric reaction between malonic aldehyde and thiobarbituric acid was monitored
spectrophotometrically at 530nm with increasing absorbance monitored against the blank.
Procedure
The blood was centrifuged to get the supernatant for the analysis. The test tubes were set in double for
each sample in other to get the mean value (for A=a1, a2). O.1ml of the sample was added into all the test tubes.
0.9ml of distilled water was added also to the tubes. O.1ml of 10% triton-X-100 was added to the tubes. 0.5ml
of 25% TCA was added also to all the test tubes, 0.5ml of 1% TBA in 0.3% of NaOH was also added in all the
test tubes. The solution in the test tube boiled for 40minutes and then left to cool. Thereafter, it was centrifuged
for 5 minutes and the absorbance taken at 523 and 600nm, in other to avoid unnecessary interferences.
Assay for superoxide dismutase activity (16)
Principle
The ability of SOD to inhibit the autoxidation of adrenalin was the basis of SOD assay. Superoxide
generated by xanthine oxidase reaction is known to cause the oxidation of adrenalin to adrenochromic oxide
forming pink colour which was read against the blank at 532nm.
Procedure
The test tubes were set in double per each sample in other to get the mean value.
2ml of the sample were put in all the test tubes.
2.5ml of 0.05 phosphate buffer of pH 7.8 was put in all the test-tubes.
Addition of 0.3ml of freshly prepared adrenalin solution was also added to all the test tubes.
The absorbance was taken spectrophotometrically at 480nm in 30seconds and 150 second respectively.

increase in contraction of the extract, results to higher toxicity in the fishes.

The above table shows the effect of the extract on the SOD concentration in the fishes, as the concentration of
the extract is increased, the concentration of SOD activity also increased.
IV. Result and Discussion
The study on the effects of Adenia cessampeloides extract on the lipid peroxidation product in fishes
(Claria patrichus), showed a significant decrease in malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration (Table 4.2) as the
concentration of the extract increased. On the hand, the level of superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity increased
significantly (table 4.3) (p<0.005) as the concentration of the extract increased in the medium. To an extent, this
result shows that Adenia cessampeloides could inhibit lipid peroxidation. The increase in SOD activity with the
concentration of the crude extract increased has shown the potential of the plant extract to inhibit oxidative
stress which is associated with aging process. SOD inhibits free radical chain reaction, a process that has been
linked to increase neurodegenerative processes as neurological diseases like retarded brain growth and retention.
From the results, it also shows that the plant has anti-oxidant properties which are able to prevent lipid
peroxidation and oxidative stress. It means that the plant is a rich source of micronutrient especially vitamin C,
vitamin E, folic acid, copper and zinc which are major anti-oxidants in the system.
V. Conclusion
It has been established that Adenia cessampeloides is a fish poison and could be used for fish
harvesting based on the concentration. It was also discovered that it killed fishes easier if used wet. Our results
also showed that Adenia cessampeloides stem extract reduced malondialdehyde (MDA) level but induced
superoxide dismutase ( SOD) activity in the serum of the fishes.I recommend that more research be carried out
to establish the biochemical basis of Adenia cessampeloides poisoning ability and some of the phytochemicals.
With high concentration of Adenia cessampeloides, large amount of fishes can be harvested for commercial
purpose.
