This chapter introduces engineering as a field and discusses the education of engineers. It covers the functions of engineers, the main engineering disciplines, characteristics of successful engineering students, and accreditation requirements for engineering programs. Engineering programs in Malaysia are controlled and accredited by the National Accreditation Board to ensure quality through evaluation of syllabi and on-site visits. The chapter establishes that engineers are problem solvers trained to address challenges they may have not previously encountered.
