Week 2 Learning Materials
Synthesis and Takeaways: How Does Vulnerability Feel?
(Brown, 2010, p.50)
● Taking off the mask and
hoping the real me isn’t too
disappointing.
● So awkward and scary, but it
makes you feel human and
alive.
● Halfway across a tightrope,
moving forward and going
back are both just as scary.
● Not sucking it in anymore. ● Going out on a (very, very
high) limb.
● Letting go of control.
● It’s where courage and fear
meet.
● Being all in. ● Like free falling.
● Sweaty palms and a racing
heart
● It feels like fear, every single
time.
● A lump in your thought and
a knot in your chest.
● Scary and exciting; terrifying
and hopeful.
● Infinitely terrifying, and
achingly necessary.
● Freedom and liberation.
28. In order to be good
company for one
another, we must be able
to let people see who
we are instead of what
we do.
In order to let people
see who we are, we
must practice
vulnerability and
imperfection. In order to guide
first-year students, we
must lead with who we
are, invite vulnerability,
and be good company.

33. SOUL Scenario #2
SHOULD JOE EVEN BE HERE?
Joe just attended the first EDL 290F class for SOULs. He was motivated to become a SOUL because he
really connected with his SOUL last summer at orientation, plus the summer pay is pretty good.
During class, Joe noticed how accomplished and poised the other SOULs seemed. They all seem to know
each other and know what’s going on. SOUL is Joe’s first leadership experience, and he hasn’t been
involved with any clubs or organizations on campus. Should he even be here? Joe thinks about how he feels
out of place.
The EDL 290F instructor, Liz, has assigned reading about good company, authenticity, vulnerability, and
imperfection. It sounds more like a self-help class than a leadership class or SOUL training. Plus, it’s a lot of
work! Joe shakes his head to himself and wonders what he got himself into.
Using what you know from experience and the learning materials, what advice would you give Joe?
