Our Ride
CYCLING TERMS FOR OUR JOURNEY
RIDERS: Everyone here is a rider – you’re on the journey. We’ll welcome new riders along the way,
too!
TIME TRIALS: We need to track progress for learning throughout the SOUL journey. Time trials
(surveys to measure learning) will happen along the way. Time trials aren’t evaluative – they’re just
helping us to see where we are.
CHECKPOINTS: We’ve got to hold ourselves and our team accountable, so we need to evaluate
ourselves along the way. Checkpoints occur at each phase, which you may understand as quizzes.
STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING: Every athlete needs strength and conditioning. The SOUL
strength and conditioning process includes feedback, practice, goal-setting, and performance
evaluations.

Roadmap for Our Journey
SOUL Syllabus
COURSE TIME AND INSTRUCTIONAL TIME
Two credit hour courses require at least 25 hours of instruction over the course of the semester and a
minimum of 4 hours of out-of-class work each week per each credit hour.
What this means in practice:
● This is a full semester course in two thirds of the semester..
● Each class period + SOUL symposium = instructional time.
● Plan to spend about 4+ hours outside of class working on assignments and preparation for this course.
Bottom line: this class will take work and time; it is designed as a learning experience that will hopefully
enhance your leadership and your work as a SOUL. Learn more about instructional hours »

22. SOUL Scenario #1
SARAH AND THE WORK CONTRACT
Sarah, a new SOUL, nervously fidgets in her seat during the first SOUL class. She can’t believe she’s landed this campus
leadership role – everyone knows who the SOULs are and she’s so excited to meet the new first-year students this summer!
Sarah starts daydreaming about the warm summer days sitting in a circle with her small group talking about hopes, dreams,
and aspirations for the coming semester.
Andrea: “... and that’s the SOUL contract in a nutshell. Do you have any questions?”
Sarah totally missed most of what Andrea said about the SOUL contract, and she doesn’t think she has any questions. Eh… it
should be fine. Sarah takes a deep breath before signing her name on the signature line. As she finishes, she feels a sense of
accomplishment and gratitude. This is going to be awesome!
FAST FORWARD
It’s October 15. Sarah had the best time as a SOUL last summer; it was hard work, but it was really rewarding in the end, and it
seems like she really helped first-year students transition to college successfully. Ah, well.. now onto the next opportunity –
Sarah is applying to study abroad over the winter term. Sarah completely forgets about the last part of her SOUL contract in
January until Andrea emails out a reminder a few days later. It’s fine, she thinks, Andrea is a pretty flexible supervisor.
What should Sarah have done to begin with? What should Sarah do now?
