Apple iPods Changed the Way we Listen to Music
iPods have positively influenced the way people all over the world listen to and share music in the
blink of an eye. Since Apple introduced the first iPod in 2001, 350 million iPods have been sold as of
September 2012. That s enough iPods for every single person in the United States to have their own
device with twenty million still left over. Those are some pretty staggering numbers, considering more
iPods are sold every second.
The iPod has seven main parts: hard drive, battery, click wheel, display, microprocessor, video chip,
and audio chip. Older models of the iPod (with the click wheel) have a hard drive. On the inside of the
device, the hard drive is made up of platters, spindle motors, heads and head actuators. Platters are
little disks that are covered with a magnetic surface and then placed on a spindle. The disks have a
cobalt alloy substance applied to them which is placed on the platter by electroplating. Digital
information is stored on the disks and information is written on the disks by electromagnetic flux
through read write heads that change the polarization. As the platter rotates, the magnetic fields move
and the read write head senses electrical change between the moving magnetic fields.
The iPod has a small Liquid Crystal Display (more commonly known as an LCD). The molecules in
the liquid crystals in the screen go through multiple changes, one being the nematic phase. The twisted
nematic is manipulated when the electric current is applied to it.

Idioms In English Language
The English language being very flexible constantly enriches its vocabulary with words invented by
language speakers, making it more colourful with new idiomatic expressions, and, at times, refills its
stocks with the borrowings and neologisms. English just amazes by its extraordinary linguistic
diversity.
The focus of this paper is to share consideration on the importance of idioms for non native speakers
as part of their mastery of the English language.
Understanding the lexicon of English demands more than knowing the denotative meaning of words.
It requires its speakers to have connotative word comprehension and more an understanding of
figurative language. Idioms fall into the latter category. Learning idioms is certainly not a piece of
cake (very easy), but once you know them, they can be a lot of fun, and anyway, because English
people use idioms non stop you will be all at sea (totally confused) in most conversations until you
learn the ropes (understand how things work). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Among the various definitions of idioms are: (1) the language peculiar to a people, country, class,
community or, more rarely, an individual; (2) a construction or expression having a meaning different
from the literal one or not according to the usual patterns of the language /New Webster s Dictionary,
1993/. It is the second definition that best suits the focus of this paper. Professor Kounin defined idiom
as a stable combination of words with a fully or partially figurative meaning /Kounin, 1970/. This
definition emphasizes two inherent and very important features of idiomatic expressions. Idioms have
lexical and grammatical stability. It implies that they are fixed in their form, hence any substitution
and rearrangment in their structure can lead to a complete loss of their primary

Globalization Of The American Style Fast Food
Globalization is one of the most popular issues that have been discussed through the
world by the sociologist for decades.(James A. D, Dick. P, Yongseok Seo 2006)
According to John Tomlinson s (Tomlinson 2006) cognition of globalization. He
interprets that:
Globalization is a complex process because it involves rapid social
change that is occurring simultaneously across a number of dimensions in the world
economy, in politics, in communications, in the physical environment and in culture
and each of these transformations interact with the others. (p. 1)
As far as I am concerned, globalization is happening around daily life. For example,
McDonalds, they start from a small restaurant in California to one of the world s
leading food service retailers, with more than 35000 restaurants in more than a
hundred countries.(McDonald 2014) McDonalds spread the American style fast food
worldwide. This can be seen as a globalization of food culture.
Since the societies are becoming more and more alike nowadays and leading to a
phenomenon known as globalization. Some people afraid that globalization will lead
to the loss of cultural identify while some think it can have a good impact on the
societies. Based on the book《Golden Arches East: McDonald s in East
Asia》which indicates the advantages of the food globalization by providing the view
that it is not only spreading the food culture but also blending with the locals and the

Response To The Bible
This is how I would respond to my friend in option one:
The Bible is indeed made up of many different stories that are compiled in the sixty six books of the
Bible, but they all tell one overarching story; God s story. All the stories of the Bible, while not
seeming to fit together at first glance, flow together to create the story of God. From the beginning of
Genesis to the end of Revelation, God is there, and He reveals Himself and His plan for us through the
different stories (Everyday Bible Study, pg. 3 4). The Old Testament tells us the history of humans and
why we need a Savior and also points to the coming of that Savior, Jesus, whose life is recorded in the
gospels of the New Testament.
Because the Bible is God s story and not ours, if we begin reading the Bible expecting it to lay out
specific and easily followed guidelines for our lives, we miss the point of the Bible in the first place.
Yes, the Bible can help us navigate through our daily lives, but it s not a road map that helps us choose
the best path to take, its purpose is to show us what God s plan for us is ... Show more content on

The Bible is God s word to us, and He is a kind and loving God. He wants us to know that we are
loved unconditionally and that He will never abandon us. As the Lord told us through Moses; Be
strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with
you. He will not leave you or forsake you. (Deuteronomy 31:6). Yes, the Bible s stories can help you
cope with life in the real world, but the Bible is not just a self help book. Because God is the focus of
the Bible, the reassurances and words of encouragement have meaning and substance. Instead of
simply saying you re strong, you can get through this! the Bible tells me that I can do all things
through Him who strengthens me, (Philippians 4:13). Our strength does not come from ourselves, but

A Great Children s Book Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland...
In the 1800s a great author created a great book and inspired a different way of writing. Alice s
Adventures in Wonderland is known as one of best children s story book. Alice s Adventures in
Wonderland is one of the most famous and enduring children s classics. The novel is full of whimsical
charm, and a feeling for the absurd that is unsurpassed. The book begins with a young girl Alice,
bored under a tree in the meadow by a river, reading a book with her sister. Everything seems
perfectly normal and peaceful; there could be nothing more in keeping with the middle class Victorian
world in which Carroll lived. The tale plays with logic giving the story lasting image with adults as
well as with children. Its narrative course and structure, characters and imagery have been hugely
influenced in both popular culture and literature, especially in the fantasy part. It is considered to be
one of the best examples of the literary nonsense genre. Our author Lewis Carroll is actually a name
he chose as his author name as his pen name. He is Charles Lutwidge Dodgson born and raised in
England Carroll had a very happy childhood. His mother was patient and friendly, and his father
despite his religious work tutored all of his children and raised them to be well rounded people.
Carroll frequently made up games for him and his brothers and wrote short stories and poems, which
were similar to his later published works. Once he found writing it all came clear to him, it became his

Pakist A Social And Political Tool
The answer is, it depends.
It depends on when you run into the average Pakistani male. Pakistan is I don t care Islamic when he
is drooling over Katrina Kaif s assets at the movies. Conversely, Pakistan is full on Islamic when the
same gent is at Friday prayers, nodding solemnly in agreement with the imam spewing religious hate
speech.
This brings me to the reason for my rant: Pakistan s newfound liberal conscience. Steered by the many
brave columnists of the English language dailies, theirs is a revolution bent on destroying Pakistan s
Islamist status quo. Since I am a card carrying coward, I will stick to mundane facts.
Women get treated as inferiors in Pakistan, blame Islam. The economy has gone down the gutter,
blame Islam. The politicians are all crooked and in bed with the Taliban, it must have something to do
with the long dead Gen.Zia ul Haq! It completely eludes these braves that religion has been a social
and political tool for rich humans to manipulate poor humans since time immemorial. The wider the
class divide in any society, the better this tool works.
Somehow, these writers also believe that underneath the Islamic straightjacket is a Pakistani soul made
of pure white light. Stupidity, hence, is not innate, but remote controlled from Riyadh. This is a
dangerous narrative because it dumps all of society s failings onto an invisible bogey instead of
individuals owning up to their actions.
Still, how do you measure the Islamic quotient in Pakistan?

Comparing Anne Frank And Krystyna Chiger
Survival is the act of staying alive. People survive through many different circumstances and
situations, difficult or not. The situations of Anne Frank and Krystyna Chiger were especially difficult.
Both Anne s and Krystyna s situations, which were similar and different, were difficult to survive
through. Firstly, Anne Frank had a difficult time surviving through certain circumstances. Anne Frank
s family and another family, the Van Daans, hid together in a tiny attic because they were in severe
danger just because they were Jewish. There were eight people cramped together, and the situation
was not very pleasant. To survive, Anne Frank had to dream and pretend she was safe and free as well
as working out her emotions by writing in a diary. Another person hiding with Anne, Mrs. Van Daan,
survived a different way. She instead voiced her concerns by arguing, complaining, and critiquing
other people. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She was Jewish and living in Poland. To hide from the Nazis, Krystyna s family, as well as many other
people, hid in a sewer. In order to survive, Krystyna dreamt of being safe and free. She also stayed
close to her parents because she was scared. Overall, the two stories of survival are very similar. Both
Krystyna and Anne hid for their safety. They both had hard times surviving and they were both scared.
Anne and Krystyna both imagined being free so they could bear the reality of their situation. They
both had parents and siblings to help them stay alive. However, Anne and Krystyna s stories are both
very different, too. While Anne had great living conditions, with a kitchen and lavatory, Krystyna had
to live in a dirty sewer. Once, Krystyna got a dirty pin stuck in her foot. Anne s food was more varied
when Krystyna s was the same every day, and even got stolen by rats. However, Anne did not have as
many people as Krystyna to keep her company, as unfriendly as they might

WWII Allied Forces Looked to Win the War with Operation...

17 September 1944, Allied forces looking for a means to win the war by the end of the year, launched
the biggest air and ground offensive in the history of warfare.1 Allied commanders had to find a way
to break through the Siegfried Line. The Siegfried Line was the western defensive line into Germany
extending north from the border of Switzerland to the Ruhr area of Germany. Instead of trying to
break through the line, they decided to move north through Holland.

Eisenhower to present his plan. Although this plan met resistance among several other Allied
commanders, Eisenhower approved the mission. The first planning meeting took place that same
evening for Operation Market.
Planning/Preparation
Due to the shortened timeline, the Allies had to act fast if they were going to capitalize on the
momentum gained thus far. From conception to initiation, planning time for Operation Market Garden
was one week. Compared to the months spent planning the airborne invasion of Normandy, Operation
Market Garden s short planning timeline raised doubt and concern among all participants. Most of
which, were concerns over the sheer size of the operation and the fact that it was created with such a
short planning cycle. Another major concern was due to a lack of night illumination, the airborne drop
would be made during the day deep behind enemy lines. As well as, overall mission success would
depend greatly on favorable weather. An uncontrollable factor with a immense impact on the mission.
Deployment
This operation consisted of two separate missions. Operation Market, the airborne assault targeted key
bridges and terrain in the vicinity of four cities. The 101st would be responsible for securing
approximately fifteen miles of the corridor, including the city of Eindhoven and bridges at Zon, St.
Oedenrode, and Veghel. The 82d Airborne Division was to drop in the middle to

Ethical Issues Of Whaling Essay
Protecting Cultures from the Impacts of Globalization
For this assignment, I chose to write about the exemption for whaling issue. Whaling has existed in

although much of the whaling industry is centric around non endangered species of whales, the
practice raises an ethical debate worldwide. This practice is regulated by the International Whaling

Deep Vein Thrombosis Case Study
Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a serious medical condition that affects certain hospitalized patients.
The healthcare team, especially the registered nurse, must understand what this condition entails, who
it affects, and how to prevent and treat this condition. The proper knowledge and training will allow
the registered nurse to be able to keep the patients safe and help prevent complication from deep vein
thrombosis.
A DVT is a blood clot that can occur anywhere in the body, but these blood clots tend to occur in the

prevent further complications such as a pulmonary embolism, which occurs when a blood clot travels

The registered nurse must be observant of any clinical signs that require further assessment such as the
signs and symptoms stated earlier in this paper. Previously, nurses were taught to use the Homan s
sign to assess for a DVT. After extensive research, it has been found that the Homan s sign is not as
effective as previously documented. Therefore, after additional research, the registered nurse can use
the Wells model when assessing a patient for a DVT. The Wells model is a numerical scale similar to
other scales used within the nursing practice and consists of a scoring system that predicts the
likelihood of a DVT. The Wells model assesses for the following criteria: if a patient has active cancer,
any paralysis, if the patient has been bedridden for more than 3 days or had a major surgery within the
last 4 weeks, Is the patient experiencing any local tenderness, any swelling or pitting edema in the leg
or calf, or is there an alternative diagnosis that is more likely than a DVT. These areas are scored with
a number 1 if positive and a 0 if negative. A score of 3 or more would indicate a high probability for a
DVT. A score of 1 or 2 would indicate a moderate probability, and a score of 0 would indicate a low
probability of a DVT. When doing an assessment, the registered nurse can quickly use the Wells
model to determine if further assessment is

Factors Affecting Global Food Prices
Several different factors contributed to the increase in global food prices in 2011 and 2012, which
stimulated a number of international responses. Global food prices have increased markedly since the
early 2000s, reaching a historical peak in February 2011. Monthly changes in global prices for a given
commodity are recorded using the Food Price Index by the United Nation s Food and Agriculture
Organisation (FAO). The FAO Food Price Index comprises of the average price indices for cereals,
oils and fats, fairy products, meat and sugar, and considers the price at which these food groups are
sold and purchased globally. The Food Price Index increased from 89.6 in 2002 to 229.9 in 2011, an
increase of more than 150%. Global food prices continued to escalate in 2012 when the Food Price
Index grew by 8% between December 2011 and March 2012, just falling short of the February 2011
historical peak1. As food prices increased in 2011 and 2012, over 40 million people were forced into
poverty2. This paper examines several factors which contributed to the global increase in food prices,
including increased oil prices, increased biofuel production, adverse weather conditions and increased
food demand. The responses to the spike in global food prices in 2011 and 2012 will also be
discussed. The paper will also discuss some of the suggested responses to the increased food prices
identified by the international community, such as increased agricultural production, productivity and

Theme Of Sexual Dissonance In The Picture Of Dorian Gray
A Picture of Sexual Fluidity Oscar Wilde was a figurehead for a larger cause in the late nineteenth
century. His reality crumbled under the cognitive dissonance of the high class aristocrats and their
struggle to find any reason to overthrow those who are cognizant enough to see and react to said
dissonance. What are best known as the Wilde trials, consisted of using completely fictional literature
as evidence to real events. Wilde s novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray was a tool used to undermine
Wilde s authority and testimony about his personal romantic encounters. While the book may hold
status as a revolutionary novel about exploring ideas, the Victorians did not think as much once they

He was slightly ahead of his time. Those deciding his court case were stuck in the century s previous
historical and religious beliefs while Wilde seem[ed] to stand more obviously at the beginning of a
peculiarly modern sense of personal identity as a form of political affiliation, rather than at the back
end of the Victorian era (Joyce, p 513). Wilde stood trial for going against the public norm. His
homosexual behaviors were seen as deviant and aberrant. Why would he want anything outside of his
marriage and children? How could anyone want more than that? The societal standards of the
Victorian era perceived these questions as objective. However, this case was a rare display of the full
force of the English government trial system taking place. Rarely were individuals convicted of this
crime (between 8 12 a year in the 1840 s) and most were not high class citizens. Wilde was the darling
of London society before his arrest. It was common knowledge that he was a sexually fluid person
(Adut, 214). The Picture of Dorian Gray was a widely well liked novel before Wilde s arrest and not
until later was it seen as a deviant work filled with homosexuality, or better known during that time as
homophilia. Londoners knew of Wilde s proclivity for years, however they only rejected his presence
once this information was seen as negative in the news. Wilde s transgression was a normal aspect of
Victorian underground culture. This court case was the very definition of a

Direct Cost Analysis
Direct Cost Analysis
Direct Cost Analysis
The proper measurement of direct labor costs is essential when manufacturing a product. The
management and accounting departments of a company need to know the actual costs of
manufacturing a good so that effective business decisions can be made.
Measuring Costs Accurately There are a few reasons why the measurement of a direct cost can go
wrong. The first major reason is not taking all applicable costs into account. This includes missing fuel
for vehicles. If fuel costs are not included, it could make the product seem cheaper than it actually is.
Another reason why costs may be measured in accurately is not spreading the cost of an expense to all
of the products it touches. If fuel is use to manufacture a good and the fuel is used on multiple
products and the cost behind that fuel is only applied to one product, then the costs measured for the
goods would not be accurate (Investopedia, 2012). Another major reason direct costs would not be
accurate is that direct labor costs are not applied at all or to the right products. Employees that provide
direct labor to a product need to assist in keeping accurate records of whether they worked on the
manufacturing of a product and how much time they spent. This is typically done through coding time
on time cards to indicate when they worked on a product and for how long. If this is not done
accurately, the overall labor costs of an item would be in accurate and this would lead to the

Endosulfan Literature Review
Impact of Endosulfan on Male Reproductive functions a review
ABSTRACT
Endosulfan is an organochlorine insecticide and acaracide used to control a broad range of insect and
arthropod pests on a wide variety of crops in many agrosystems. It can cause acute and chronic
toxicity. Endosulfan is a neurotoxin, haematoxin, genotoxin and nephrotoxin. Toxicity of this
insecticide on reproductive organs is confirmed. So this article reviews experimental and
epidemiological studies of reproductive toxicity of endosulfan in males. The Literature search was
carried on PubMed for the years 1994 2014. Twelve experimental studies and two human studies on
Male Reproductive Toxicity induced by endosulfan were identified. Based on the findings, it suggest
that endosulfan can affect the male reproductive system and also that these effects are likely to be
larger if exposure occurs during the developmental phase. Further investigation of endosulfan as
reproductive toxicant is warranted.

Tedtalk s The Illusion Of Consciousness
Nowhere and Nothing
Many people are afraid of Emptiness, however, because it reminds them of Loneliness. Everything has
to be filled in, it seems appointment books, hillsides, vacant lots but when all the spaces are filled, the
Loneliness really begins. (p.147)
By pointing out the paradox where the pursuit of fullness results in emptiness, it forces the audience to
examine situations from their own experience, specifically failures and check whether they have been
going the wrong direction the whole time. It further blurs the boundaries between black and white, not

At first I tried to define it, my plan was to create a religion, synthesizing the belief that such and such
is supposed to be perfect. After concluding that I needed a universal definition of perfection, this idea
was soon abandoned for being too narrow and I went on the search for a way to eliminate human
influence, thus rendering it objective and is therefore perfect as a matter of fact. Ultimately realizing
that perfection is a human construct and isolating it from humanity would leave me with nothing,
perfection would cease to exist. When I finally accepted the impossible nature of an objective
perfection, creating it became straightforward. A lie must be constructed in order to make it exist, and
when the impossible perfection comes to existence, thankfully as humans are not omniscient, the lie
can be covered up. I have tried to completely ignore the nature of perfection, making my own rules,
and that idea collapsed quickly. By giving in a little and learning about how the concept of perfection
came to be, I decided to alter it, bend it to my need but inevitably, I was unsuccessful. Only when I
went along with its nature without meddlesome, combative, or egotistical effort (p.68), was I able to
attain the otherwise impossible

The War I Left Men Wound Mentally And Physically
For World War I left men wound mentally and physically. About thirty one percent of the men were
either wounded in the line of fire or had nightmares of what happen in the trenches (Brose, 111). For
example, a soldier named Paul saw his fellow soldier, Behm get struck in the eye with a shell in the
line of fire (Remarque, 12). These sights caused men to repress their worries because they did not
want to die in the war. In order for them to survive, they had to come to the realization to repress the
questions of why they were fighting and what they were fighting for out of their minds (Remarque,
138). By the 1920 s the warfare had increased, but in a way that was not on the battlefields and was
caused by political parties going against ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Moreover, the Russian Revolution was the outcome of the communist party wanting to have complete
control over the citizens in Russia. They displayed this idea with their thoughts about removing the
practice of religion. They saw religion as an opium, for they believed it caused the people to be
inactive mainly the working class (Brose, 167). For they saw religion as a malicious idea, which
caused them to see churches as a danger to the bourgeoisie because they believed that the proletarians
were planning evil events against them (Brose, 167). Eisenstein demonstrated the communist
oppression of religion with the jester on the cross in the priest s hand as being a weapon (Bordwell,
66). When the priest in Battleship Potemkin was stroking the cross as a dagger. Another example in
the film was when he was tapping the cross in hand while the guards were getting ready to kill the
workers. He tapped the cross three times like a hypnotist hypnotizing them from shooting the workers.
This perspective that Stalin and the communist party had made a major impact on the culture within
Russia, just like other political groups had done in other countries, especially in Germany. Germany
after World War I and around the time of the Russian Revolution had experienced a culture change.
People within Europe had begun to attend theaters, athletic events, and more to escape from the reality
of the aftermath of the wars (Brose, 145). During

Hidden Biases Of Good People
The ease of modern technology that lets people communicate globally, the access to extraordinary
mobility, and the well roundedness of people today has produced the biggest population in history that
prides itself in being egalitarian and fair minded. Psychologists have found evidence in recent studies
that, although people are not as outwardly racist and discriminatory as they were in the past centuries,
there is an underlying bias that can lead people to act in ways opposing their beliefs. In their book
Blindspot: Hidden Biases of Good people, psychologists Mahzarin Banaji and Anthony Greenwald
explore the ideas of unconscious identity, the judgment and treatment of others based on stereotypes
and the phenomenon of association, and our inability to simply stop being biased as opposed to
outsmarting it.
Children are taught that lying is bad, that telling the truth no matter the consequences will always
outweigh the instant benefit of telling a lie. So we grow up knowing that lying is bad and mostly avoid
lying; however, the psychologists assert that untruths that are somewhere on the spectrum between
totally unconscious and partly conscious, untruths that people tell not to others but at times to
themselves as well are not a rare occurrence (Banaji and Greenwald 21). This idea that our
unconscious mind can also have a completely different identity than the one that we outwardly portray
demonstrates our ability to have preferences and biases that can have detrimental

Abigail Adams Sparknotes
Abigail Adams was a wise and educated woman that had one wonderful but challenging life. Like any
other women in the 1700s, she grew up to become someone s wife, bear children and live in the
private life of her husband s house. Abigail has a slightly different story than other women though.
She grew up with her sisters and brother and had a tutor so they became literate, which was not a thing
for women. Educated men didn t want a wife that was smart, they wanted someone to take care of
them and the children and just about nothing else. In the following paragraphs we will talk about who
the author is, a back story of who Abigail is, and the thesis of the book as a whole.
The author of this book, Charles W. Aker, was born in Indianapolis, April 2, 1920 to Ira and Mary Bird
Akers. He was a US Navy vet and served in World War II in 1942 to 1946. After he fought in WWII
he became a history teacher at the Eastern Nazarene College in 1948 then became the Director of
Quincy Junior College in 1959. He then taught at Geneva College in Pennsylvania after which he went
to Oakland University in 1966 and was appointed as chair of the history department in 1968. As well
as being a teacher, he was also a member of many societies like the Colonial Society of Massachusetts
and the American Historical Association just to name a few. Charles was a very well established

important scenes and made the movie more interesting and it kept my attention on the screen. It
completely cut Aries out of the movie but I feel that was okay because it didn t have a big importance.
So overall I feel like the new film had a better story line and was short and sweet very action filled I
would give it a 4 out of 5 stars. Also a difference between the two films was seeing Jesus face. In the
1995 film you never saw his face not even at the crucifixion. I don t like that in the new film showing
his face and introducing him early along in the show really made the story so much better you felt
more emotion about it. In the 1995 version he really wasn t around much but in the new one he really

Class Structure In College Campuses
In the 2001 Reese Witherspoon classic Legally Blonde, Elle Woods, a typical blonde sorority girl,
declares Everybody likes me ! This mindset follows sororities and fraternities as they typically occupy
the top of the class structure in colleges everywhere, simultaneously mirroring the American class
structure. White, upper class men and women take to greek life in order to fraternize with people like
them, or their brothers and sisters . The University of Richmond simultaneously incorporates this
concept, as greek life students are more revered and typically more sociable, and popular than non
affiliated students. The class structure in college campuses, revolving around greek life, simulates that
of the outside world, and places rich, white students into the elitist upper class of college life. The
University of Richmond s sororities and fraternities have a financial commitment to join. Students
must pay dues to join, and unlike UR, campuses with special greek housing have to pay extra to live
with their brothers or sisters. For students on financial aid or taking student loans, greek dues may be
too expensive, which inhibits that student from joining and reaping the benefits, social or professional.

The social scene at colleges typically orbits greek life, and the University of Richmond is no
exception. However, when race and economic capital are main factors on who is able to join a sorority

believing they re above others. This elitist model in greek life is a reflection of American society in
which the rich white typically take the upper class and the poor minorities take up the lower class.

Perceptive innovation. Adaptations. Viable resources. Each of these terms can be used to define the
creative and cultural industries affecting our ever changing world. Here in Minnesota, we have
experienced the vastness of our cultural capabilities, and this was portrayed through the Iron Range.
The Iron Range is a collection of mines lining the north shore of Minnesota, and remained as one of
the key stations for work in our state. As time advances, however, we have seen a decline in the
abilities of production and labor due to a decreased need for steel production. Though the Iron Range

Criticism In Mariette Lippo s Confirmation Names
In Confirmation Names, Mariette Lippo describes a group of girls choosing their patron saints.
Through the use of irony and syntax, the author scorns the Catholic Church s treatment towards
adolescent girls and the standards they are held under. However, when using a feminist criticism,
Lippo s disdain turns into anger towards society, not just the Catholic faith alone. When under an
archetypal criticism, the piece focuses more on the religious stereotypes of the harsh, reserved nun and
the classic rebellious Catholic schoolgirls, and thus provokes a sense of pity for the girls and an
automatic cringe worthy distaste for the nuns. Both the close reading and literary criticisms produce
new tones and shed different lights on the conflicting aspects of Confirmation Names. Initially,
Confirmation Names explains the process behind confirmation names for young Catholic girls.
However, through the use of language and literary devices, Lippo clearly presents a defiant tone
towards the way young girls are restricted in the Catholic faith. Lippo strategically addresses each
young girl in a new paragraph, reflecting Catholic nuns tones toward each young girl s vice. However,
though Lippo introduces the nuns sentiments in her piece, she also provides a sense of defiant
solidarity for the young girls by using the inclusive words we and us when interjecting herself into the
narration We studied the saints... (Lippo 1), and None of us, of course, chose Magdalen... (Lippo

The Importance Of Birth Control
Louise Slaughter, a New York congresswoman, once wrote, for most women, including women who
want to have children, contraception, is not an option, it is a basic health care necessity . In other
words, Slaughter believes that for many women, no matter their decision on child bearing,
contraceptives are are essential to their health. In short, contraception is just as important as a routine
check up with a primary doctor. Furthermore, birth control serves more than one purpose;
contraception controls if or when women reproduce but is also used to treat medical conditions, such
as, endometriosis, and irregular menstruation. Although, the first birth control clinic was opened in
Brooklyn, New York in 1916 by Margaret Sanger, the fight for reproductive freedom and the complete
legalization of contraception would not end until the 1960s. Merely ten days after opening the clinic,
Sanger and employees were arrested for breaking the Comstock Law. The Comstock Law, which was
passed in 1873, prohibited and restricted advertisements and sales of information, and materials, that
could be used as contraception. Although the odds were against her in the fight for legal birth control,
Sanger reopened the clinic; however, Sanger was arrested a second time and was charged with
maintaining a public nuisance according to the Margaret Sanger Paper Project. Regardless of being
arrested twice before, Sanger reopened the clinic a third time. Consequently, the police forced Sanger

`` All Star Superman `` And `` The Yellow Wallpaper ``
Right from the start of All Star Superman, we are introduced to colorful panels that integrates the use
and symbolism of colors. Throughout written literature, from Red Wheelbarrow to The Yellow
Wallpaper, color has been a consistently used technique to add extra meaning to subjects. The use of
that symbolism in the comic book medium makes sense, since color can be shown instead of
conveyed. To try and establish the colors meaning in All Star Superman, we can look at it s repeated
use and try and determine what the pattern between them is. Take for example the color purple: on
pages 146 147, the funeral is done out in purple; another example is on page 236, Regan is wearing
only purple. Between those two situations, the connection ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We see more of this same example on pages 92, 96 and 197, as in that they are all green panels that
occur on or near the moonbase. On page 219 221, we are in Superman s lab, which has a green
background very similar to that of Quintum s lab.
This use of green is not limited to backgrounds or outfits either. From pages 48 50, Lois Lane is
preparing to use a kryptonite gun on Superman. The item itself is primarily green and fires green mist,
which also makes sense because kryptonite is green. On page 106, we see Luther fiddling with a
device that is a mobile library. When this device speaks, even its speech bubbles are done out in this
green shade. This scientific symbolism makes sense here too, as these are very scientific machines.
Jumping ahead to the use of another color, we have yellow. Whenever yellow appears in this comic, it
is usually in regard to very powerful, ultimate things. Take for example page 149. On page 149, the
leader of the Superman Squad (who is presumably an older, original superman) gives the modern,
original superman an indestructible flower. The leader and the flower are both a golden yellow, which
gives both of them a feeling that they are powerful and mysterious. On page 40, Superman is making
miniature suns to feed to his sun eater. These suns are a similar shade of golden yellow, and

Anglo Saxon Heroic Deeds Meaning
In Anglo Saxon culture, it is very important to be remembered. The only way to be remembered was
to perform a heroic deed that was later recited as a poem to a large group of people on multiple
occasions. They turned these stories into poems so it was easier for the storyteller to remember it and
Bards would recite these to people for centuries so it was very important for people to become a hero
or cause a major change to be part of these stories and remembered forever. The definition of a hero
now versus the definition of a hero in the Anglo Saxon time period isn t much different but the
definition of what is a heroic deed is much different. In modern day culture, a good example of a
heroic deed would be a firefighter, someone risking their lives to save others. In Anglo Saxon culture,
a good example of a heroic deed would be to kill someone who is harmful, someone risking their lives
to save others. Notice how each person the firefighter or the warrior they both risked their lives to save
others but in modern day someone killing someone for others isn t really a hero. Because of an
existing judicial system, heroes only save people instead of sacrificing and killing others. Heros
during Anglo Saxon were the judicial system and were responsible for punishment which meant
sacrificing terrible people to save others. In our modern day culture, a hero is someone who stands up
and fights for a group of people or a cause. A hero is someone with characteristics such as courageous,
brave and kind. With a judicial system and police officers, a hero is a lot different in our society. A
hero will take care of things that government officials won t handle. Heros will stand up for an opinion
or flaw in government law such as women s rights or gay marriage. In Anglo Saxon culture, the heroes
were the judicial system so they used violence to carry out punishment for bad people. In modern day
a hero doesn t use violence as an answer to problems. Other heroes are firefighters because they risk
their lives to save others every day. In the article, Social Representations of Hero and Everyday Hero
it says, The social representation of Hero can be summarized as a collection of abstract values and
characteristics.

Essay on The Return of Martin Guerre
The Return of Martin Guerre
The purpose of this paper is to introduce, discuss, and analyze the book The Return of Martin Guerre
by Natalie Zamon Davis. Specifically, it will discuss the life of the peasant during the Middle Ages.
This book is a fascinating account of a true case that happened during the 16th century in France. The
book is also an excellent example of how the peasants lived in the Middle Ages, from what they ate, to
how they traveled and what their family lives were like.
This book shows that life in the Middle Ages was difficult and demanding, but it seems a little bit

In the Basque country, families often lived together, as the author notes, When a household is set up
with two generations of married folk, it is not the Basque combination of the old heir and the young
heir, but a widowed parent, usually the mother, with one of her married children (Davis 11). Even
when Martin s uncle married, he moved nearby to another house, and lived close to his relatives.
Martin returned with his bride to his father s house after they married, and lived with his family under
one roof (Davis 18). Since their main concern was survival and perpetuation of the family, this
indicates how important family life was to the peasants.
Women had a lesser position than men did in the society. Davis writes, At the parish mass, she would
have to get used to the fact that her women did not push ahead of the men to make their offerings, did
not go about the church to collect for the vestry, and din not serve as sacristans (Davis 15). Women
were also blamed for a man s impotence, as Davis notes. She writes, In the sixteenth century, it was
usually blamed on the power of a woman outside the marriage (Davis 21). The fact that Martin
abandoned his wife and newborn son after eight years of marriage shows what low status women had
in society. She had no recourse, she lived in a foreign household, and she could not even remarry.

  • 2. Apple iPods Changed the Way we Listen to Music iPods have positively influenced the way people all over the world listen to and share music in the blink of an eye. Since Apple introduced the first iPod in 2001, 350 million iPods have been sold as of September 2012. That s enough iPods for every single person in the United States to have their own device with twenty million still left over. Those are some pretty staggering numbers, considering more iPods are sold every second. The iPod has seven main parts: hard drive, battery, click wheel, display, microprocessor, video chip, and audio chip. Older models of the iPod (with the click wheel) have a hard drive. On the inside of the device, the hard drive is made up of platters, spindle motors, heads and head actuators. Platters are little disks that are covered with a magnetic surface and then placed on a spindle. The disks have a cobalt alloy substance applied to them which is placed on the platter by electroplating. Digital information is stored on the disks and information is written on the disks by electromagnetic flux through read write heads that change the polarization. As the platter rotates, the magnetic fields move and the read write head senses electrical change between the moving magnetic fields. The iPod has a small Liquid Crystal Display (more commonly known as an LCD). The molecules in the liquid crystals in the screen go through multiple changes, one being the nematic phase. The twisted nematic is manipulated when the electric current is applied to it. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Idioms In English Language The English language being very flexible constantly enriches its vocabulary with words invented by language speakers, making it more colourful with new idiomatic expressions, and, at times, refills its stocks with the borrowings and neologisms. English just amazes by its extraordinary linguistic diversity. The focus of this paper is to share consideration on the importance of idioms for non native speakers as part of their mastery of the English language. Understanding the lexicon of English demands more than knowing the denotative meaning of words. It requires its speakers to have connotative word comprehension and more an understanding of figurative language. Idioms fall into the latter category. Learning idioms is certainly not a piece of cake (very easy), but once you know them, they can be a lot of fun, and anyway, because English people use idioms non stop you will be all at sea (totally confused) in most conversations until you learn the ropes (understand how things work). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Among the various definitions of idioms are: (1) the language peculiar to a people, country, class, community or, more rarely, an individual; (2) a construction or expression having a meaning different from the literal one or not according to the usual patterns of the language /New Webster s Dictionary, 1993/. It is the second definition that best suits the focus of this paper. Professor Kounin defined idiom as a stable combination of words with a fully or partially figurative meaning /Kounin, 1970/. This definition emphasizes two inherent and very important features of idiomatic expressions. Idioms have lexical and grammatical stability. It implies that they are fixed in their form, hence any substitution and rearrangment in their structure can lead to a complete loss of their primary ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Enduring Love Analysis AN: I think I ve made it too dramatic so far, so I m going to tread away from those waters for now. It s still the beginning of the story and I don t want to push every single twist I have in the start of it. For now, beware of the fluff. I m keeping it light to put less stress on the readers and the characters in the story. I ll leave it a bit lighthearted for now before more drama, and the eventual time skip. I don t think you guys know how much I appreciate the favs/ follows/ reviews that I get from you all. I already have over 50 follows and that alone really means a lot to me. To commemorate my appreciation omakes, omakes everywhere! Till next time, Angelic Bliss Omake 1 Nana He was such a useless son. Ever so clumsy, bad grades, a coward Nana learned not to expect much from him. Tsuna was just going to get far and that troubled the woman. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The woman knew that Tsuna didn t really know his father, but she hoped that some of his Iemitsu s genes would kick in one day. Iemitsu was just so dashing, charismatic, and an overall ball of sun. It didn t take long for her to be completely mesmerized by the man. Tsuna paled in comparison to the man and it honestly disappointed her. Iemitsu was strong and appealing. Tsuna was clumsy and dull. Her son has barely done anything in his life and Nana was starting to get worried that he never will. He was always alone and isolated and that worried the woman. She didn t want Iemitsu to come home thinking she s failed to raise her son. So she smiled. She smiled because it was easier to pretend to be happy and eventually Nana started to feel as happy as she pretended to be. She ignored that fact that she didn t see her husband. She ignored the fact that she felt so trapped in the house in her life. She ignored the fact that her life was not what she imagined it to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Globalization Of The American Style Fast Food Globalization is one of the most popular issues that have been discussed through the world by the sociologist for decades.(James A. D, Dick. P, Yongseok Seo 2006) According to John Tomlinson s (Tomlinson 2006) cognition of globalization. He interprets that: Globalization is a complex process because it involves rapid social change that is occurring simultaneously across a number of dimensions in the world economy, in politics, in communications, in the physical environment and in culture and each of these transformations interact with the others. (p. 1) As far as I am concerned, globalization is happening around daily life. For example, McDonalds, they start from a small restaurant in California to one of the world s leading food service retailers, with more than 35000 restaurants in more than a hundred countries.(McDonald 2014) McDonalds spread the American style fast food worldwide. This can be seen as a globalization of food culture. Since the societies are becoming more and more alike nowadays and leading to a phenomenon known as globalization. Some people afraid that globalization will lead to the loss of cultural identify while some think it can have a good impact on the societies. Based on the book《Golden Arches East: McDonald s in East Asia》which indicates the advantages of the food globalization by providing the view that it is not only spreading the food culture but also blending with the locals and the

  • 8. Response To The Bible This is how I would respond to my friend in option one: The Bible is indeed made up of many different stories that are compiled in the sixty six books of the Bible, but they all tell one overarching story; God s story. All the stories of the Bible, while not seeming to fit together at first glance, flow together to create the story of God. From the beginning of Genesis to the end of Revelation, God is there, and He reveals Himself and His plan for us through the different stories (Everyday Bible Study, pg. 3 4). The Old Testament tells us the history of humans and why we need a Savior and also points to the coming of that Savior, Jesus, whose life is recorded in the gospels of the New Testament. Because the Bible is God s story and not ours, if we begin reading the Bible expecting it to lay out specific and easily followed guidelines for our lives, we miss the point of the Bible in the first place. Yes, the Bible can help us navigate through our daily lives, but it s not a road map that helps us choose the best path to take, its purpose is to show us what God s plan for us is ... (Deuteronomy 31:6). Yes, the Bible s stories can help you cope with life in the real world, but the Bible is not just a self help book. Because God is the focus of the Bible, the reassurances and words of encouragement have meaning and substance. • 9. A Great Children s Book Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland... In the 1800s a great author created a great book and inspired a different way of writing. Alice s Adventures in Wonderland is known as one of best children s story book. Alice s Adventures in Wonderland is one of the most famous and enduring children s classics. The novel is full of whimsical charm, and a feeling for the absurd that is unsurpassed. The book begins with a young girl Alice, bored under a tree in the meadow by a river, reading a book with her sister. Everything seems perfectly normal and peaceful; there could be nothing more in keeping with the middle class Victorian world in which Carroll lived. The tale plays with logic giving the story lasting image with adults as well as with children. Its narrative course and structure, characters and imagery have been hugely influenced in both popular culture and literature, especially in the fantasy part. It is considered to be one of the best examples of the literary nonsense genre. Our author Lewis Carroll is actually a name he chose as his author name as his pen name. He is Charles Lutwidge Dodgson born and raised in England Carroll had a very happy childhood. Pakistan is I don t care Islamic when he is drooling over Katrina Kaif s assets at the movies. Conversely, Pakistan is full on Islamic when the same gent is at Friday prayers, nodding solemnly in agreement with the imam spewing religious hate speech. This brings me to the reason for my rant: Pakistan s newfound liberal conscience. Steered by the many brave columnists of the English language dailies, theirs is a revolution bent on destroying Pakistan s Islamist status quo. Since I am a card carrying coward, I will stick to mundane facts. Women get treated as inferiors in Pakistan, blame Islam. The economy has gone down the gutter, blame Islam. The politicians are all crooked and in bed with the Taliban, it must have something to do with the long dead Gen.Zia ul Haq! It completely eludes these braves that religion has been a social and political tool for rich humans to manipulate poor humans since time immemorial. The wider the class divide in any society, the better this tool works. Somehow, these writers also believe that underneath the Islamic straightjacket is a Pakistani soul made of pure white light. Stupidity, hence, is not innate, but remote controlled from Riyadh. This is a dangerous narrative because it dumps all of society s failings onto an invisible bogey instead of individuals owning up to their actions. Therefore, after additional research, the registered nurse can use the Wells model when assessing a patient for a DVT. The Wells model assesses for the following criteria: if a patient has active cancer, any paralysis, if the patient has been bedridden for more than 3 days or had a major surgery within the last 4 weeks, Is the patient experiencing any local tenderness, any swelling or pitting edema in the leg or calf, or is there an alternative diagnosis that is more likely than a DVT. These areas are scored with a number 1 if positive and a 0 if negative. A score of 3 or more would indicate a high probability for a DVT. What are best known as the Wilde trials, consisted of using completely fictional literature as evidence to real events. Those deciding his court case were stuck in the century s previous historical and religious beliefs while Wilde seem[ed] to stand more obviously at the beginning of a peculiarly modern sense of personal identity as a form of political affiliation, rather than at the back end of the Victorian era (Joyce, p 513). Wilde stood trial for going against the public norm. His homosexual behaviors were seen as deviant and aberrant. Why would he want anything outside of his marriage and children? How could anyone want more than that? The societal standards of the Victorian era perceived these questions as objective. However, this case was a rare display of the full force of the English government trial system taking place. Rarely were individuals convicted of this crime (between 8 12 a year in the 1840 s) and most were not high class citizens. Wilde was the darling of London society before his arrest. • 20. Direct Cost Analysis Direct Cost Analysis Direct Cost Analysis The proper measurement of direct labor costs is essential when manufacturing a product. The management and accounting departments of a company need to know the actual costs of manufacturing a good so that effective business decisions can be made. Measuring Costs Accurately There are a few reasons why the measurement of a direct cost can go wrong. The first major reason is not taking all applicable costs into account. This includes missing fuel for vehicles. If fuel costs are not included, it could make the product seem cheaper than it actually is. Another reason why costs may be measured in accurately is not spreading the cost of an expense to all of the products it touches. If fuel is use to manufacture a good and the fuel is used on multiple products and the cost behind that fuel is only applied to one product, then the costs measured for the goods would not be accurate (Investopedia, 2012). Another major reason direct costs would not be accurate is that direct labor costs are not applied at all or to the right products. Employees that provide direct labor to a product need to assist in keeping accurate records of whether they worked on the manufacturing of a product and how much time they spent. This is typically done through coding time on time cards to indicate when they worked on a product and for how long. If this is not done accurately, the overall labor costs of an item would be in accurate and this would lead to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Hidden Biases Of Good People The ease of modern technology that lets people communicate globally, the access to extraordinary mobility, and the well roundedness of people today has produced the biggest population in history that prides itself in being egalitarian and fair minded. Psychologists have found evidence in recent studies that, although people are not as outwardly racist and discriminatory as they were in the past centuries, there is an underlying bias that can lead people to act in ways opposing their beliefs. In their book Blindspot: Hidden Biases of Good people, psychologists Mahzarin Banaji and Anthony Greenwald explore the ideas of unconscious identity, the judgment and treatment of others based on stereotypes and the phenomenon of association, and our inability to simply stop being biased as opposed to outsmarting it. Children are taught that lying is bad, that telling the truth no matter the consequences will always outweigh the instant benefit of telling a lie. So we grow up knowing that lying is bad and mostly avoid lying; however, the psychologists assert that untruths that are somewhere on the spectrum between totally unconscious and partly conscious, untruths that people tell not to others but at times to themselves as well are not a rare occurrence (Banaji and Greenwald 21). The class structure in college campuses, revolving around greek life, simulates that of the outside world, and places rich, white students into the elitist upper class of college life. The University of Richmond s sororities and fraternities have a financial commitment to join. Students must pay dues to join, and unlike UR, campuses with special greek housing have to pay extra to live with their brothers or sisters. For students on financial aid or taking student loans, greek dues may be too expensive, which inhibits that student from joining and reaping the benefits, social or professional. The dues alone are very ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The social scene at colleges typically orbits greek life, and the University of Richmond is no exception. However, when race and economic capital are main factors on who is able to join a sorority or fraternity, it leads to a class structure that limits minorities and promotes white, rich kids into believing they re above others. This elitist model in greek life is a reflection of American society in which the rich white typically take the upper class and the poor minorities take up the lower class. Each of these terms can be used to define the creative and cultural industries affecting our ever changing world. Here in Minnesota, we have experienced the vastness of our cultural capabilities, and this was portrayed through the Iron Range. The Iron Range is a collection of mines lining the north shore of Minnesota, and remained as one of the key stations for work in our state. As time advances, however, we have seen a decline in the abilities of production and labor due to a decreased need for steel production. The pay in many occupations, most of them low paying service jobs, actually lost ground to inflation during the decade. The same thing happened to people receiving welfare benefits (Klauda 2). • 30. Criticism In Mariette Lippo s Confirmation Names In Confirmation Names, Mariette Lippo describes a group of girls choosing their patron saints. Through the use of irony and syntax, the author scorns the Catholic Church s treatment towards adolescent girls and the standards they are held under. However, when using a feminist criticism, Lippo s disdain turns into anger towards society, not just the Catholic faith alone. When under an archetypal criticism, the piece focuses more on the religious stereotypes of the harsh, reserved nun and the classic rebellious Catholic schoolgirls, and thus provokes a sense of pity for the girls and an automatic cringe worthy distaste for the nuns. Both the close reading and literary criticisms produce new tones and shed different lights on the conflicting aspects of Confirmation Names. Initially, Confirmation Names explains the process behind confirmation names for young Catholic girls. However, through the use of language and literary devices, Lippo clearly presents a defiant tone towards the way young girls are restricted in the Catholic faith. Lippo strategically addresses each young girl in a new paragraph, reflecting Catholic nuns tones toward each young girl s vice. However, though Lippo introduces the nuns sentiments in her piece, she also provides a sense of defiant solidarity for the young girls by using the inclusive words we and us when interjecting herself into the narration We studied the saints... • 32. The Importance Of Birth Control Louise Slaughter, a New York congresswoman, once wrote, for most women, including women who want to have children, contraception, is not an option, it is a basic health care necessity . In other words, Slaughter believes that for many women, no matter their decision on child bearing, contraceptives are are essential to their health. In short, contraception is just as important as a routine check up with a primary doctor. Furthermore, birth control serves more than one purpose; contraception controls if or when women reproduce but is also used to treat medical conditions, such as, endometriosis, and irregular menstruation. Although, the first birth control clinic was opened in Brooklyn, New York in 1916 by Margaret Sanger, the fight for reproductive freedom and the complete legalization of contraception would not end until the 1960s. Merely ten days after opening the clinic, Sanger and employees were arrested for breaking the Comstock Law. The Comstock Law, which was passed in 1873, prohibited and restricted advertisements and sales of information, and materials, that could be used as contraception. Although the odds were against her in the fight for legal birth control, Sanger reopened the clinic; however, Sanger was arrested a second time and was charged with maintaining a public nuisance according to the Margaret Sanger Paper Project. Regardless of being arrested twice before, Sanger reopened the clinic a third time. Consequently, the police forced Sanger s landlord ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. `` All Star Superman `` And `` The Yellow Wallpaper `` Right from the start of All Star Superman, we are introduced to colorful panels that integrates the use and symbolism of colors. Throughout written literature, from Red Wheelbarrow to The Yellow Wallpaper, color has been a consistently used technique to add extra meaning to subjects. The use of that symbolism in the comic book medium makes sense, since color can be shown instead of conveyed. To try and establish the colors meaning in All Star Superman, we can look at it s repeated use and try and determine what the pattern between them is. Take for example the color purple: on pages 146 147, the funeral is done out in purple; another example is on page 236, Regan is wearing only purple. Between those two situations, the connection ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We see more of this same example on pages 92, 96 and 197, as in that they are all green panels that occur on or near the moonbase. On page 219 221, we are in Superman s lab, which has a green background very similar to that of Quintum s lab. This use of green is not limited to backgrounds or outfits either. From pages 48 50, Lois Lane is preparing to use a kryptonite gun on Superman. The item itself is primarily green and fires green mist, which also makes sense because kryptonite is green. On page 106, we see Luther fiddling with a device that is a mobile library. When this device speaks, even its speech bubbles are done out in this green shade. This scientific symbolism makes sense here too, as these are very scientific machines. Jumping ahead to the use of another color, we have yellow. Whenever yellow appears in this comic, it is usually in regard to very powerful, ultimate things. Take for example page 149. On page 149, the leader of the Superman Squad (who is presumably an older, original superman) gives the modern, original superman an indestructible flower. The leader and the flower are both a golden yellow, which gives both of them a feeling that they are powerful and mysterious. On page 40, Superman is making miniature suns to feed to his sun eater. • 37. Anglo Saxon Heroic Deeds Meaning In Anglo Saxon culture, it is very important to be remembered. The only way to be remembered was to perform a heroic deed that was later recited as a poem to a large group of people on multiple occasions. They turned these stories into poems so it was easier for the storyteller to remember it and Bards would recite these to people for centuries so it was very important for people to become a hero or cause a major change to be part of these stories and remembered forever. The definition of a hero now versus the definition of a hero in the Anglo Saxon time period isn t much different but the definition of what is a heroic deed is much different. In modern day culture, a good example of a heroic deed would be a firefighter, someone risking their lives to save others. In Anglo Saxon culture, a good example of a heroic deed would be to kill someone who is harmful, someone risking their lives to save others. Notice how each person the firefighter or the warrior they both risked their lives to save others but in modern day someone killing someone for others isn t really a hero. Because of an existing judicial system, heroes only save people instead of sacrificing and killing others. Heros during Anglo Saxon were the judicial system and were responsible for punishment which meant sacrificing terrible people to save others. In our modern day culture, a hero is someone who stands up and fights for a group of people or a cause. A hero is someone with characteristics such as courageous, brave and kind. With a judicial system and police officers, a hero is a lot different in our society. A hero will take care of things that government officials won t handle. Heros will stand up for an opinion or flaw in government law such as women s rights or gay marriage. In Anglo Saxon culture, the heroes were the judicial system so they used violence to carry out punishment for bad people. In modern day a hero doesn t use violence as an answer to problems. Other heroes are firefighters because they risk their lives to save others every day. In the article, Social Representations of Hero and Everyday Hero it says, The social representation of Hero can be summarized as a collection of abstract values and characteristics. ... Specifically, it will discuss the life of the peasant during the Middle Ages. This book is a fascinating account of a true case that happened during the 16th century in France. The book is also an excellent example of how the peasants lived in the Middle Ages, from what they ate, to how they traveled and what their family lives were like. In the Basque country, families often lived together, as the author notes, When a household is set up with two generations of married folk, it is not the Basque combination of the old heir and the young heir, but a widowed parent, usually the mother, with one of her married children (Davis 11). Even when Martin s uncle married, he moved nearby to another house, and lived close to his relatives. Martin returned with his bride to his father s house after they married, and lived with his family under one roof (Davis 18). Since their main concern was survival and perpetuation of the family, this indicates how important family life was to the peasants. Women had a lesser position than men did in the society. Davis writes, At the parish mass, she would have to get used to the fact that her women did not push ahead of the men to make their offerings, did not go about the church to collect for the vestry, and din not serve as sacristans (Davis 15). Women were also blamed for a man s impotence, as Davis notes. She writes, In the sixteenth century, it was usually blamed on the power of a woman outside the marriage (Davis 21).
