use of the latest technological components available.
In this paper,we present the design &implementation
of a home automation system where communication
technologies GSM(Global System for Mobile Comm)
Internet, and speech recognition have been used. All
these techniques are successfully merged in a single
wireless home automation system. This system offers
a complete, low cost, powerful and user friendly way
of real-time monitoring and remote control of a house.
A Mobile Gateway for Remote Interaction With
Wireless Sensor Networks
Abstract
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) almost invariably
support a centralized network management model. Though the
data gathering function is conducted remotely, such data are
usually routed via data sinks to central servers for processing,
storage, visualization, and interpretation. However, the issue of
supporting remote access to WSNs and individual sensor nodes
whilst in their physical environment has not been viewed as a
priority. It is envisaged that this situation will change as WSNs
proliferate in a range of domains, and the potential for
supporting innovative revenue-generating services manifest
themselves. As a step towards realizing such access, a mobile
gateway has been designed and implemented. This gateway
supports Zigbee as this is the predominant protocol supported
by WSNs. Furthermore, it also supports Bluetooth, thereby
facilitating interaction with conventional mobile devices. The
gateway is programmable according to the needs of arbitrary
services and applications
A Robot that Approaches Pedestrians
Abstract

When robots serve in urban areas such as shopping
malls, they will often be required to approach people in order to
initiate service. This paper presents a technique for human–robot
interaction that enables a robot to approach peoplewho are
passing through an environment. For successful approach, our
proposed planner first searches for a target person at public
distance zones anticipating his/her future position and behavior.
It chooses a person who does not seem busy and can be reached
from a frontal direction.Once the robot successfully approaches
the person within the social distance zone, it identifies the
person’s reaction and provides a timely response by
coordinating its body orientation. The system was tested in a
shopping mall and compared with a simple approaching method.
The result demonstrates a significant improvement in
approaching performance; the simple method was only 35.1%
successful, whereas the proposed technique showed a success
rate of 55.9%.
An Embedded Systems Laboratory to Support Rapid
Prototyping of Robotics and the Internet of
Things
Abstract

This paper describes a new approach for a course
and laboratory designed to allow students to develop low-cost
prototypes of robotic and other embedded devices that feature
Internet connectivity, I/O, networking, a real-time operating
system (RTOS), and object-oriented C/C++. The application
programming interface (API) libraries provided permit students
to work at a higher level of abstraction. A low-cost 32-bit SOC
RISC microcontroller module with flash memory, numerous I/O
interfaces, and on-chip networking hardware is used to build
prototypes. A cloud-based C/C++ compiler is used for software
development. All student files are stored on a server, and
anyWeb browser can be used for software development.
Breadboards are used in laboratory projects to rapidly build
prototypes of robots
and embedded devices using the
microcontroller, networking, and other I/O subsystems on small
breakout boards. The commercial breakout boards used provide
a large assortment of modern sensors, drivers, display ICs, and
external I/O connectors. Resources provided include eBooks,
laboratory assignments, and
extensive Wiki pages with
schematics and sample microcontroller application code for
each breakout board.
An Intelligent Self-Adjusting Sensor for Smart
Home Services based on ZigBee Communications
Abstract

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have been
becoming increasingly essential in recent years because of
their ability to manage real-time situational information for
various novel services. Recently, the scope of the WSN
technologies has been expanded to places such as the home,
in order to provide the residents with various intelligent
services, such as home automation services or home energy
management services. However, due to their architectural
constraints, such as the trade-off between the performance
and cost, WSNs are not effectively implemented in home
environments.Therefore,this paper proposes a ZigBee-based
intelligent self-adjusting sensor (ZiSAS) in order to address
these concerns. This paper presents a situation- based self
adjusting scheme, an event- based self - adjusting sensor
network, and hardware and middleware implementation. We
also introduce some smart home services using the proposed
system. We implemented our system in real test bed and
conducted an experiment. Our experiment shows that we
reduce the system’s energy consumption.
Application of Temperature Compensated Ultrasonic
Ranging for Blind Person and Verification Using
MATLAB
Abstract

This paper contains a method to implement a mobility
aid for blind person and also can be used in automatic
robots, self- propelling vehicles in automated production
factories etc. Model contains signal processing unit with
PIC microcontroller which receives data from Ultrasonic
sensor and the Temperature sensor then processed it and
delivers it to the computer using serial input/output port &
gives alert to the blind person using voice processor with
earphone. Paper contains temperature compensation
method to reduce the error in measurement of distance
using ultrasonic sensors. Signalprocessing unit contains PIC
microcontroller which is used for interfacing between
different sensors and computer. Then received data is
verified using MATLAB.
Remote-Controllable Power Outlet System
for Home Power Management
Abstract

In this paper we describe the Wireless PowerControlled Outlet Module (WPCOM) with a scalable
mechanism for home power management which we
havedeveloped. The WPCOM integrates the multiple AC
power sockets and a simple low-power microcontroller
into a power outlet to switch the power of the sockets
ON/OFF and to measure the power consumption of
plugged electric home appliances. Our WPCOM consists
of six scalable modules, that is, the Essential Control
Module, the Bluetooth Module, the GSM Module, the
Ethernet Module, the SD Card Module and the Power
Measuring Module, which together provide an indoor
wireless, and an outdoor remote control and monitor of
electric home appliances. We have designed a PDA control
software and remote control software which support the
Graphic User Interface, thus allowing the user to easily
monitor the electric home appliances through the PDA and
the Internet individually. In addition, we use a Short
Message Service to achieve control and monitoring
through a GSM cellular mobile phone for remote use
anytime and anywhere.
Remote Monitoring System of ECG and Body
Temperature Signals
Abstract

The paper presents a remote monitoring system for
Electrocardiographic and temperature signals.The system
consists of a hardware module for acquisition, a Bluetooth
transmission module and finally a displaying module(PC or
mobile devices). Information is sent via IP (GPRS or WiFi)
to a database server containing clinical data, which can
be accessed through a web application. The system was
assessed by testing different patients with the support of a
medical doctor, obtaining a positive performance.
Remote-Control System of High Efficiency
and Intelligent Street Lighting Using a ZigBee
Network of Devices and Sensors
Abstract
The proposed remote-control system can optimize
management and efficiency of street lighting systems.
It uses ZigBee-based wireless devices which enable
more efficient street lamp- system management, thanks
to an advanced interface and control architecture. It
uses a sensor combination to control and guarantee the
desired system parameters;the information is transferred
point by point using ZigBee transmitters and receivers
and is sent to a control terminal used to check the state of
the street lamps and to take appropriate measures in case
of failure.
Secure Wireless Monitoring And Control
Systems For Smart Grid and Smart Home
Abstract
Secure and efficient communication between
human being and managed devices is critical for Smart
Grid & Smart Home. This article considers architecture
and design of a secure access gateway(SAG) for home
area networks. The SAG serves as the interface between
the remote users & the managed devices, such that real
time secure monitoring & control of the devices can be
achieved through a Smart Phone. We try to address
the security and capacity challenges using multilayer
techniques. Security enhancement is ensured through
network layer protocol development,as well as inherently
secure physical layer transceiver design. Capacity
improvement is achieved using dynamic Resource
management. Remote monitoring and control of home/
office devices through a Smart Phone is coming closer
to us more than ever before.
