The earth's surface is constantly changing due to the movement of tectonic plates. Alfred Wegener first proposed the theory of continental drift in 1915, suggesting that the continents were once joined together in a supercontinent called Pangaea before drifting apart over millions of years. There are 15 tectonic plates that make up the earth's crust, which can cause earthquakes when plates scrape together or form volcanoes when they crash into each other. Our understanding of the dynamic processes that shape the earth's surface continues to evolve.
