 In motion weighing is the technology which is used
to measure the weight of a moving vehicle.
 This is the process for measuring the dynamic tire
forces of a moving vehicle and estimating the
corresponding tire loads of the static vehicle.
 Weigh In-Motion (WIM) systems are capable of
measuring vehicles travelling at a reduced or
normal traffic speed and do not require the vehicle
to come to a stop.

◦ Minimize or eliminate vehicle disruption while
permitting data of sufficient accuracy for planning
and screening
 Permanent
◦ Sensors and the data acquisition systems collect data
at the same location
 Semi-permanent
◦ Sensors are built into pavement while the data
collection system is moved from site to site
 Portable
◦ Sensors and equipment are moved from site to site
 Permanent or temporary installation into or
onto the road surface
 Can be installed directly into the road in a
flexible format
 Can confirm to the profile of the road
 Flat construction, small cut
 Accurate weighing device - Weighpads or
Axlepads
 Very high speed A/D converter to change the
voltage signal into required data
 Software package for data collection and
analysis
 Remove the load from the load cell.
 For Zero weight, there is some ADC output.
 Now keep some known weight, like 10 Kg on
the load cell.
 There is some another reading of ADC for that
weight.

 Measure the overall weight of a vehicle.
 Monitor the speed of a vehicle.
 Monitor the number of vehicles passing by.
 Sends the data to the system which is logged
using Data Logging Software.

 The system is successfully running at a speed
of 5 km/hr.
 Various traffic data is been collected in the
system like number of vehicle, number of axles
and speed measurement.
 The prototype comprises of limited and most
easily available resources, hence in future one
can work upon enhancing the In motion
measurement at higher speed.

In-motion Weighing with Vehicle Data Collection System

  • 2.  In motion weighing is the technology which is used to measure the weight of a moving vehicle.  This is the process for measuring the dynamic tire forces of a moving vehicle and estimating the corresponding tire loads of the static vehicle.  Weigh In-Motion (WIM) systems are capable of measuring vehicles travelling at a reduced or normal traffic speed and do not require the vehicle to come to a stop.
  • 4.  Road wear and safety.  Collection of reliable data for designing pavements and Bridges.  To reduce Bridge damages.  for management, statistics and economic surveys of traffic.  Provide necessary information for the tax system.
  • 5.  The Damage to Roads and Bridges  Great Loss in The State’s Regulation Fees and Tax income  The Harm to The Traffic Security  Disorder in The Road Transportation
  • 6.  Low speed systems (<5 km/h) ◦ Provide the high level of accuracy needed for enforcement or toll collection  High speed systems (>15 km/h) ◦ Minimize or eliminate vehicle disruption while permitting data of sufficient accuracy for planning and screening
  • 7.  Permanent ◦ Sensors and the data acquisition systems collect data at the same location  Semi-permanent ◦ Sensors are built into pavement while the data collection system is moved from site to site  Portable ◦ Sensors and equipment are moved from site to site
  • 8.  Permanent or temporary installation into or onto the road surface  Can be installed directly into the road in a flexible format  Can confirm to the profile of the road  Flat construction, small cut
  • 9.  Accurate weighing device - Weighpads or Axlepads  Very high speed A/D converter to change the voltage signal into required data  Software package for data collection and analysis

  • 12.  Remove the load from the load cell.  For Zero weight, there is some ADC output.  Now keep some known weight, like 10 Kg on the load cell.  There is some another reading of ADC for that weight.  Eg:- Weight (Kg.) ADC Output 0 100 10 200

  • 14.  Slow speed WIM System.  Measure the overall weight of a vehicle.  Monitor the speed of a vehicle.  Monitor the number of vehicles passing by.  Sends the data to the system which is logged using Data Logging Software.  Operational Speed limit < 5km/h.

  • 19.  The system is successfully running at a speed of 5 km/hr.  Various traffic data is been collected in the system like number of vehicle, number of axles and speed measurement.  The prototype comprises of limited and most easily available resources, hence in future one can work upon enhancing the In motion measurement at higher speed.
