Developing Computational Thinking Practises through Digital Fabrication Activ...Jari Laru
This paper presents a study of developing computational thinking (CT) practices through digital fabrication activities, such as creating tangible artefacts with digital tools. The aim of the study was to explore the potential of digital fabrication activities for developing CT practices. We investigated three cases of school visits where the students engaged in digital fabrication activities in Fab Lab Oulu, northern Finland. Based on the perspectives of the teachers who participated in the activities and facilitators who ran the activities, we identified that digital fabrication activities have the potential to develop CT practices, especially formulating problems in order to use a computer for assistance, thinking logically, and implementing possible solutions efficiently and effectively. The findings suggested that the nature of digital fabrication activities, such as frequent use of computers and complex problem-solving, encouraged development of CT practices. However, we also uncovered the possibility that CT is not being adequately defined by the teachers and facilitators.

Teaching can be supplemented, supported, adopted and integrated with technology so as to actively engage students in the learning process and better understand the subject matter. To fully realize technology’s potential for improving learning, Davies & West (2013) suggested that addressing : one-to-one computing initiatives, integration of open educational resources, various methods of teacher professional development, ethical issues affecting technology use, emerging approaches to technology integration that emphasize pedagogical perspectives and personalized instruction, technology-enabled assessment practices, and the need for systemic educational change.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

KG Pillay – a Maths and Science teacher from Durban went on to win the Innovation in Community category at the Worldwide finals. His learners come from disadvantaged backgrounds, and few have textbooks although most have cell phones. To overcome this he has made maths and science content downloadable on to cell phones through his www.mlearner.co.za website. Learners can get key information, complete online tests and get instant results – all for minimal cost.
This Canadian maths teacher used a graphing programme to get his learners excited about maths. Learners were required to find or draw a picture – and then recreate it – line by line – by writing a mathematical expression which was then plotted on a graph. This teacher had done a similar activity for years using good old fashioned graph paper, but found that his learners loved seeing their results on screen and manipulating their equations to draw the picture they had chosen.
