Teaching can be supplemented, supported, adopted and integrated with technology so as to actively engage students in the learning process and better understand the subject matter. To fully realize technology’s potential for improving learning, Davies & West (2013) suggested that addressing : one-to-one computing initiatives, integration of open educational resources, various methods of teacher professional development, ethical issues affecting technology use, emerging approaches to technology integration that emphasize pedagogical perspectives and personalized instruction, technology-enabled assessment practices, and the need for systemic educational change.
This presentation accompanies a webinar by Victor Ngobeni from Microsoft, South Africa. In the webinar Victor says, "“In this webinar, I would like to focus how Technology and Pedagogy mix as one of the units of the Teaching with Technology course, but I want to do this rather differently in a way of making it more interactive. I would like to make sure that the participants share strategies/ideas amongst each other of how they are able to “marry” the methods that they are using in the classroom with the relevant technology tools."

We have heard so much about integrating technology into our existing curriculum, and we are all struggling to do it. There are several issues to address in order for integration to be successful.
There are so many decisions to make as you consider what is best for your students. The new century and continued development of the Information Age bring on a new set of challenges as you prepare your students fo the future world.
Students should no longer be confined to using pencils, paper and the the chalkboard as the only tools for learning. These children have come to your classroom learning through lights, sound and action!
The purpose of this session is to raise your awareness of the need for computers in your school, to encourage you to use the powerful tools to engage your student in relevant learning experiences, and to raise your comfort level regarding the use of technology. With effective use of technology, you will rekindle your students’ interest in school, thereby raising their overall academic achievement.
This new role frees us to work more independently with individuals and small groups while leaving the formal presentations to another medium. Teachers help students locate and process information from various sources. Teachers are becoming more the “guide on the side” rather than “the sage in the stage.”
The demand for teachers with computer skills is increasing. Some schools now require that potential teachers demonstrate their computer skills. It is important to be knowledgeable about the different software applications. The ability to manage technology is the skill that helps you impart knowledge to students.
Using technology can change the dynamics of time in the classroom. By helping students work more independently; it gives teachers more time to work one-on-one or with small groups of students. It also rejuvenates the teacher’s love for teaching. Change is good!
Technology enhances our teaching by providing exciting material to use to reinforce what we are teaching. It improves student learning by providing different avenues for students to explore. It is another tool which helps us address different learning styles in our classrooms.
Interactive multimedia and telecommunications technologies can be powerful tools for educational improvement---but they’re only tools. As educators strive to guide students to meet higher standards and gain understanding, teachers need to become experts with a new set of skills and knowledge.
The first pieces of equipment that will be needed to get started will be a computer with an ATI graphics card or TV scan box in order to display to the entire class what is on the computer. A television with a large screen is extremely useful for display. Also, the necessary software is needed to facilitate various presentations.
A remote mouse is not necessary, however; it is very useful. The teacher can move around the classroom while advancing the slides on the display presentation. It allows the instructor freedom from the front of the computer.
To live, learn and work successfully in an increasingly complex and information-rich society, students must be able to use technology effectively. A scanner, CD writer, and digital camera will enhance their abilities to fine tune these skills. These devices allow the teacher and the students to develop more elaborate and interesting presentations, projects and class work.
There are many ways a teacher can use technology in the classroom. The power of technology is not in the tool but how it is used. It is critical that educators analyze the potential benefits of technology for learning and employing it appropriately.
Technology can come in many shapes and sizes. However, there are several areas that have to be in place when setting up a technology-rich classroom. The teacher, the classroom and the students have to meet certain criteria.
Teachers also have certain criteria to meet. The should include the following:
- document the utilization of technology in the planning process
- obtain curricular goals through the inclusion of technology
- provide computer activities that allow a natural application and logical connection and extension of the curriculum
Make sure logical classroom management processes are in place to facilitate a “user friendly” climate for technology use.
Have available a variety of software including database, spreadsheet, and multimeda applications. Students today must apply strategies for solving problems using appropriate tools for learning, colloborating, and comumunicating.
- exhibit continuous learning, enthusiasm and interest
- supervise, monitor and assist students while at the computers
- provide clear learning objectives for computer activities
A classroom should meet the following criteria:
- the room should be arranged in such a way that is conducive to group and center learning stations
- Rotation assignments for students should be posted
- student work should be posted to indicate the utilization of technology
The learning environment is student-centered, interactive, and includes collaborative, cooperative activities. Curriculum integration with the use of technology as a tool to enhance the learning in a content area really expands the learning environment.
Finally, students need to adhere to specific criteria as well. Students should be able to:
- explain the “what” and “why” of their work at the computer
- collaborate and work in teams to problem solve or in pairs for individualized technology instructions
They should be enthusiastic and motivated about technology. Having basic computer skills that are appropriate for the selected learning activity will allow them to demonstrate inquiry and discovery learning.
The world is changing in ways that require learning environments to change to prespare students to meet the challenges of the future.
Students must have cleared posted station assignments so that there is no confusion as to where they should be working.
One of the most difficult concepts for a student to realize is a mindset that frees students to be in charge of their learning, even though they may be using rather expensive equipment.
If students understand the teacher’s expectations for the use of technology in the classroom, they will use that technology in ways that positively affect instruction.
To here are numerous other ways that teachers can use computers to help with various tasks such as:
- creating charts student lists and name tags
- communicating with other professionals and subject experts via email
- making personalized certificates of achievement
Make the first step to becoming a technology-using teacher, by using technology for personal tasks. Use it to keep records, and manipulate information. Use it to generate various types of letters to parents and colleagues. Another great use is creating a class newsletter. This will keep the parents up to date and be exciting for the students.
Technology enables students to learn in ways not previously possible. Effective integration of technology is achieved when students are able to select technology tools to help them obtain information in a timely manner, analyze and synthesize the information, and present it professionally. Students can generate project presentations as well as perform demonstrations and explain research.
There are many ways that one computer can be used in the classroom for presentations. Lectures can be developed by using Powerpoint software. You can also obtain information from the Internet or other sources to demonstrate various concepts. The most effective learning environments meld traditional approaches and new approaches to facilitate learning of relevant content while addressing individual needs
The computer can be a wonderful tool to use for cooperative learning by assigning work that has to be completed by an entire group. The students learn to work together to produce a finished product. Students can edit each others work and develop group projects or group stories. A computer can also be used to poll the class on a specific topic.
There are also numerous ways to use a computer as a learning station. If a student needs extra help, the teacher can make available remediation material on the computer. Also, it can be used as a writing station by using Microsoft Word or any other writing software. There are many types of software that can be purchased for practicing skills and also for tutorial.
Test all technology ahead of time to make sure everything is working properly.
For Internet lessons: bookmark all sites ahead of time to save a few minutes.
Use a timer to help groups know when it is time to change. Be sure to allow ample time for groups to complete projects. If you know that they won’t complete the project during one visit, let them know before they begin. Students don’t like to leave a computer assignment incomplete! As part of your classroom management system, have established consequences for students who refuse to leave the computer when the egg timer sounds.
Incorporating these and other ideas will save time and avoid problems about who should use the computer, when, and for how long!
Prepare for more planning time than ever before. Believe us, you will need to spend more time planning a lesson when integrating multimedia technology than you would with the traditional pencil-and-paper approach. For starters, you need to preview the content of the laserdiscs to see how it should be integrated into your lessons. The more you do this, the more efficient you'll become, and the amount of planning time required for each lesson will begin to drop. Even so, integrating technology will always take more planning time. And that's an important consideration to keep in mind.
