concisely and smoothly at the same time. Roger Ebert commented on his review for
the film that we have to trust him (Nolan) that he can lead us through, because much
of the time we are lost and disoriented. I, personally, did not feel that way. Of course,
a lot of credit has to be given to the cinematographer too. Wally Pfisterused subtle but
effective techniques to simplify a little the complex nature of the story. In order to
prove my point, let me give an example.
In order to help the audience to seamlessly identify the dream levels where the
different stages of the plan were takin g place, Pfister gave each level a particular
color tone. The first level, where the abduction takes place, has a fairly neutral tone to
it; everything looks normal. The second level, most of the action develops in the hotel
hallway, the lighting and furniture provide a warmth tone; and the third level, where
they penetrate the mountain fortress, has a cool tone to enhance its already sterile
ambient.
