Abstract
When a large magnitude earthquake strikes, roads might buckle, dams sometimes fail, and
buildings can collapse. As more earthquakes occur, building regulations have been altered to ensure
that buildings experience minimal damage. The Trans Alaskan Pipeline System (TAPS), which
transports oil from Prudhoe Bay to the Gulf of Alaska, had engineering in place so when the
earthquake struck the Denali fault in Alaska in 2002, the pipeline didn t leak any oil (Nyman,
Johnson, and Roach, 2003). The success of the pipeline came from its supporting structures. The
engineering used in the TAPS should be applied to buildings in areas that are also prone to large
magnitude earthquakes, such as Washington and California. California is home to the San Andreas
fault, a major transform fault, just like the Denali, and Washington is home to the Seattle Basin,
whose geometry and geological units amplify main and aftershock waves. Washington and

There are numerous occasions at West Point where I have seen individuals dole out unequal shares
of duties or rewards based on their personal feelings towards the recipients. Fairness and
impartiality are fundamental traits in good officers. If a leader singles out an individual for either
unfair rewards or punishments, it signals to the unit that there are other necessary factors needed
other than hard work to get ahead, such as cozying up to the platoon leader to get the good

was given preferential treatment and allowed to get off morning workouts, while other cadets had
to continue. The physical development staff of my company forces any cadet with an APFT score
of less than 260 to show up to morning workouts on Monday, Wednesday and Friday of each week.
These cadets are given the opportunity to stop attending workouts by scoring above a 270 on a
diagnostic APFT conducted once a month.

I Am A Normal Human Being
First and foremost, I believe that I am a normal human being. I don t consider myself to be out
of the ordinary except for my love of Prince, but if you don t like Prince or his music, can you
even call yourself a human? I digress, I thought that going into this assignment I would find out

See, what was interesting to me was very boring and weird to others, especially my friends that

I tend to bounce my knee whenever I am really into a story that I am telling, but also whenever I am
