How Does Swift Use Satire In A Modest Proposal
Analysis of Jonathan Swift s A Modest Proposal
MAKE AN INTRO FOR THIS SENTANCE!!!! In A Modest Proposal , Swift effectively uses satire
writing to reveal his annoyance with the government, papists, and overall citizens of poverty
stricken Ireland in the late seventeenth century. Jonathan Swift constructs a ridiculous essay which
he titled A Modest Proposal. He wrote this proposal to illustrate how backward the economy and
standard of living are in Ireland, but also how his proposal could improve the economy and
standard of living for the Irish people. Swift proposes that the babies of the poor will help the
wealthy of Ireland, these babies will be used to supplement their food source by being eaten.
Now they will no longer be a burden on society but now they will help contribute to the feeding
of society. Swift makes this proposal because of Ireland s current sub standard living standards.
Within his proposal Swift is offering a way to rid the county of its excess children and in turn
using them to contribute to society so they do not grow up either turn thieves for want of work, or
leave their dear native ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Social Science And Remedies For Social Engineering
Introduction
Forty three percent of in house members of organization were accountable for data loss. Twenty
two percent was intentional data loss. Twenty one percent was accidental according to Intel
Security (http://www.mcafee.com). The forty three percent is the people factor in information
security systems. People are the problem and the solution. In the discussion I will state how people
are the weakest link in information security system through social engineering. First, I will define
social engineering. People have been victims of social engineer throughout time. The first case
of social engineering could be argued was the Trojan Horse in ancient times in the Trojan War
circa 800 B.C.E. according to Homer s Iliad (www.ancient.eu) or Kublai Khan s invasion of
China in 1275 A.D to today s wire fraud emails. This paper will focus on social engineering and
remedies for social engineering. Legend has it that the Mongol warrior leader, Kublia Khan,
enticed the gatekeeper for access through the Great Wall into China. That simple act of bribery
gave Khan s forces the ability to invade China. The gatekeeper, a person, was the weakest link in
China s security back in 1275 A.D. The same holds true in 2016. Today, people are the weakest link
in an organization s security plan. That security plan is inclusive of information security as well. An
information security program needs to include: policy, education and training, awareness, and
technology to ward off

Seasons In The Great Gatsby
According to author and keynote speaker Dennis Jones, The lesson for all of us is that we too
have seasons in our lives and each has its purpose... There are times of light and warmth... there
are times of growth and expansion... (2013). Based on his words, it is evident that each of the
four seasons brings about both positive and negative changes that everyone must endure; whether
or not these changes are openly welcomed by their recipients, they cannot be avoided. Instead of
ignoring these new events and changes, it is pivotal that humans and fictional characters alike take
advantage of the opportunities proposed by each of the four seasons. The principles stated in Jones
words are directly applicable to Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan in... Show more content on

Just as leaves fall off of trees, characters take may experience times in their lives when their
health or relationships fall or slowly decay, which according to Foster s How to Read Literature
Like a Professor, is essentially what fall and winter symbolize decay and death respectively. For
instance, in Nicholas Sparks A Walk to Remember, the life of protagonist Jamie Sullivan, as
narrated by antagonist Landon Carter, comes to an end during the fall and winter seasons. Landon
narrates an important dialogue between Jamie when he says, You can t be in love with me,
Landon, she [Jamie] said through red and swollen eyes. ... Why not? I [Landon] shouted...
Because, she finally said softly,... I m dying, Landon (Sparks 1999). Landon is careful to mention
that it is a grayish... cold winter day (Sparks 1999) before he retells the event of Jamie announcing
her upcoming death. Jamie s preconceived, ongoing death relates to idea that fall represents decline,
whereas her actual death is symbolized by winter. Because of her passing, Jamie and Landon s
romance comes to an unfortunate conclusion, again showcasing how the autumn season
metaphorically symbolizes decline. Relating to Fitzgerald s work, Nick narrates Gatsby s death by
commenting, Gatsby shouldered the mattress and started for the pool... and in a moment
disappeared among the yellowing trees....

Relationship Between Monetary Policy And The Stock Market
1. Introduction
In the past 20 years, the central banks in most developed countries had successfully managed to
control the inflation rate. However, the financial crisis 2008 has highlighted the links between
financial market and policy. (Ravn, 2011) The topic I am going to discuss is the relationship
between monetary policy and the stock market. What factors have influenced interest rate and how
the policymakers should react to the change in stock market have driven the increasing attentions
lately. Taylor Rule (2003) will be the core theory used to discuss the model tested. The
interpretation of simple Taylor rule is very straightforward. According to the
equationi_t=c+ОІ(ПЂ_t ПЂ_t^* )+Оі(y_t y_t^* )+Оµ_t , the policy will be mainly affected by
inflation gap and output gap. (Woodford, 2001) The reason why Taylor uses interest rate to
represent monetary policy is that the central bank likes to adjust interest rate as a tool to maintain
the balance in the market. While, there is a strong debate about the other variables, in particular,
stock price volatility. After taking asset price volatility into account, the augmented Taylor rule
equation will be reformulated as:i_t=c+ОІ(ПЂ_t ПЂ_t^* )+Оі(y_t y_t^*
)+∑_(k=1)^nв
–’гЂ–Оґ_k s_(t k)+Оµ_t гЂ—. It will influence the monetary policy while the
importance of asset price in the market is very controversial. Scholars including Bernanke and
Gertler question the importance of asset price in determining the monetary policy and claim that the
influence

Abolishment Of The Fairness Doctrine
The immediate impact following the abolishment of the Fairness Doctrine was rise of right wing
talk radio shows and the emergence of right leaning cable news station, Fox News. With the end of
the Fairness Doctrine, no longer holds broadcasters and radio hosts to balance their programing. In
addition, technological advancement allowed national syndicate talk radio shows to emerge enable
the rise of conservative radio talks to grow exponentially. Especially, a year later after the repeal in
1988, Rush Limbaugh would become the top radio host in the country. Throughout his radio
program, Limbaugh is advancing the right wing agenda. This was evident in the viewership account

Specially, almost all negative reports about the President from the establishment media such as
the New York Times and the Washington post, Trump would slander the news organizations as
Fake News and Enemy of the People knowingly the consequences of his actions. In addition with
Trump crusade, there is a deep partisan divide and negative attitudes towards media. A recent
research study conducted by Pew shows that there is a deep partisan division on attitudes of the
media. In particular, Democrats voters are 47 points more likely than Republicans to support a
news media watchdog role. Furthermore, 89% of Republicans had agreed that news
organizations have tendency to favor one side, contrast with Democrats only 34% of respondents.
Finally, there is a partisan division in way of Clinton voters and Trump voters had received their

cable news organization, Fox News. As a consequence, millions of Americans are watching
heavily Trump propaganda and conspiratorial cable news network. Especially, the Pizza Gate and
the Birtherism movement were all propagate on Fox News. More recently, right wing activist are

Decline Of Nuclear Families In The 20th Century
An interesting and complex modern departure from a societel norm is acting as the downfall of
what is referred to as the nuclear family. The nuclear family of a husband and wife with dependant
children, or a basic communal unit, acted as a catalyst of growth and societal stability in the United
States for quite some time. The late 20th century appeared to experience a decline in married
couples. With multifaceted forces at play, that nuclear familyappears to have been destabilized by
three important societal factors: a unique shift in cultural values, difficult economical environments
and conditions, and ever changing statistics in population. The decline in the number of married

matters worse, the shift in industrial jobs around large urban centers in the 1970s and 1980s
resulted in a lowering of marriage rates among lower income and african american women; where
men without steady employment or income potential found themselves shut out of the marriage

Analyzing The Belting Technique
I had to adjust my register to sing using the thyroarytenoid muscles. Peckham comments on the
most effective transition, which is to train singers to strengthen the weaker muscle group and to
guide the singer in shaping vowels to achieve a more speech like pronunciation. In the complete
Vocal technique, Sadolin replaces the word Belting with Edge, commenting that the term Belting
is a common word to describe loud singing so it was an obvious choice for the name of the full
metallic vocal mode. During my performance practice I found it challenging to sing using belt as I
had previously be trained using the legit model. I found it vocally challenging, as it was a sound
that felt unnatural to my voice. I felt by adopting the belt technique it added more strength behind
my voice and the exercises involved improved my overall performance agility. A Comparative

vibrato than Classical singers. Ken Tamplin from the Vocal Academy interestingly adapts the
Classical Bel Canto technique, which he uses to suit pop and rock vocal genres. There is a
contemporary classical crossover with the use of Belt/ Edge technique. Sadolin comments how
men use Edge in classical musical; however, women do not use this vocal quality unlike Estil. and

The Importance Of Snow In Books
It has been the coldest weather since 1885. Jem had seen snow before in books but never in real

Explain Why Volcanoes Erupt
Most people are scared of volcanoes, but do you know the real reason why? Well, when Volcanoes
that are underground erupt they can start a tsunami which can flood a city and mess it up a lot. Put
that s not the only scary thing volcanoes.
Right as your reading this there could be about 20 volcanoes erupting. Every year about 50 70
volcanoes erupt which tear down and kills thousands of people. Every 10 years about 160 erupt
that s enough lava to make a new city! There s been about 550 historical eruptions that were really
bad they killed millions of people and anyone that did live through that didn t have a home anymore.
Also like it says in the article on the slopes of Mauna Loa, Hawaii Island, The road rises from sea
level to over 4,000 feet and is partly within the boundary of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
So you really never know what volcanoes can cause. Some people say volcanoes aren t really that
bad because the volcano in Italy has only erupted 2 times in 10,000 years. But those two eruptions
were major and caused thousands and thousands of people to do die. ... Show more content on

Essay on The Heart of Tragedy Based on Oedipus Rex
During the Ancient Greek period, Aristotle, a great philosopher, wrote a book called the Poetics
to describe what makes a great tragic play. Using the Oedipus Rex by Sophocles as the basis for
his book, Aristotle goes into great detail about plot, character, and much more, breaking up the
components of a tragedy. Since Oedipus Rex had a huge part in the creation of Aristotle s book, it
fulfills many of the Greek philosopher s requirements for a tragic play.
According to Aristotle, plot is one of the most important components of a tragedy. It must have a
clear beginning, middle, and a cascade of events leading to the ending. The incentive moment in
Oedipus Rex is when Creon comes back from visiting the oracle at Delphi with news on how to ...

At the end of the novel he is left a blind man with only his daughter.
Spectacle is the act of avoiding violence and having ferocious events take place offstage to stop
the evocation of the emotions pity and fear. These feelings are evoked in Oedipus Rex because if
bad things happened to a good man, then they can happen to anyone. However, pity and fear are
kept at bay when the messenger relays Jocasta s suicide and Oedipus s act of self harm because
they didn t witness the events that took place offstage.
Dues ex Machina is the idea that an unexpected power, such as the gods, will come and fix the
situation. Aristotle dismisses this idea, believing that it is better to have a realistic and practical
plot or else it will take away the story. Two good places to have divine intervention in Oedipus
Rex would have been either before Oedipus left his adoptive parents or before he had
unknowingly killed his father. A god or a higher being could have informed him of his origins and
the curse, and he could have prevented the murder of his father and marriage to his mother. Instead,
without the use of dues ex machina, Oedipus fulfilled the prophecy which resulted in his downfall.
Oedipus Rex by Sophocles embodies all of what Aristotle described to be a proper tragedy in his
book Poetics. The plot is a clear and concise beginning, middle, and end that starts with a cause that
results in many effects, one of which

A Symbolic Activity Essay
Memorialization as a Symbolic Activity There is a growing awareness that addressing past
injustices are crucial for the process of healing and reconciliation. In order to move towards a
peaceful future, governments must acknowledge and respond to the wrongs and injustices of the
past. While there is an agreement between people that the process of reconciliation must
acknowledge the wrongs of the past and the victims, many scholars debate about how such
acknowledgments are best communicated, so that they will be sufficiently credible and effective in
improving future relations. In fact, many argue that memory is crucially important as a response to
past injustices, especially when dealing with human rightsviolations. Memorializing the past,
through memorials, commemorative ceremonies, etc., is widely promoted as a valuable way of
redressing the wrongs of the past. But what kind of redress can memorials provide, and how can
they advance in transitional justice? Indeed, I consider these symbolic reparations to be a double
edged sword due to the strengths and weaknesses, it presents as a practice for redressing the losses
that were suffered by victims. In recent years, forgiveness has attracted attention as a possible
response of victims to perpetrators in past violent human rights abuses. Moreover, transitional
justice focuses on the effective and legitimate ways of addressing past wrongs and moving towards
achieving political reconciliation and re establishing societies

The Main Differences Between The Federalist Vs....
On November 19, 1863, the sixteenth president, Abraham Lincoln, declared in his famous
Gettysburg Address, Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any
nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. Lincoln s sentiments express the
longstanding tension between the North and the South about state s rights and slavery. Both of
these causes sparked the Federalist vs. Antifederalist debates, Abolitionist Movement, and Dred
Scott decision that ultimately fueled the divide that started the civil war. The issue of states rights
was the main difference between the Federalist and Anti Federalist views, and its divergence led to
the fundamentally opposing views of the north and south. The population of the northern states
consisted mainly of Federalists who believed that it is clearly within the provision [of the
Constitution] which authorizes the making of all needful rules and regulations concerning the
property of the United States, as the same has been practiced upon by the Government . This view
suggests that politicians could make laws and regulations based on implied powers of the
Constitution, or non explicitly stated powers. With this right, the Federalists believed it was in the
best interest of the country to make a national bank that the national government would control. The
bank would consolidate all debts from each of the individual colonies and compile a large national
debt. This would benefit the Northern states

The retention factor of a compound changes from laboratory to laboratory, and even from

This would improve the quality of the chromatograms, as the bands produced would be less faint, as
in Chromatogram B, where the bands are only just distinguishable, especially through a photograph.
The chromatograms in both the paper and thin layer chromatography could also be improved by
using a larger stationary phase. A larger piece of paper or thin layer plate would increase the
surface area of the stationary phase, and give the mobile phase, made up of solvents, more time to
travel up the stationary phase. This would allow the pigments within the sample of plant extract to
spread out more, and also give more accurate Rf values. To produce more accurate results and
improve the chromatograms produced, the chromatography method could have been repeated three
times for each investigation, for example three paper chromatograms with acetone as the mobile
phase, and three with the mixed solvents, and then three thin layer chromatograms with the mixed
solvent as the mobile

Indentured Servant In Colonial America
A person under contract to work for another person for a definite period of time, usually without
pay but in exchange for free passage to a new country is known as an indentured servant. The
servant would become a free man after their debt was paid off. The indentured servant played an
important role in the American labor scene from the early seventeenth century to the third decade
of the nineteenth century (Heavner 1). Many regions of colonial America had issues with obtaining
a big enough labor supply to get work done. Indentured servitude was an initial solution to this
problem developed by the Virginia Company and used throughout the British colonies in the
seventeenth and eighteenth centuries (Galenson 9). It was devised to increase labor... Show more

The Trans Alaskan Pipeline System
Incorporating the Success of the Trans Alaskan Pipeline (TAPS) into the Building Regulations of
the States of Washington and California.
Abstract
When a large magnitude earthquake strikes, roads might buckle, dams sometimes fail, and
buildings can collapse. As more earthquakes occur, building regulations have been altered to ensure
that buildings experience minimal damage. The Trans Alaskan Pipeline System (TAPS), which
transports oil from Prudhoe Bay to the Gulf of Alaska, had engineering in place so when the
earthquake struck the Denali fault in Alaska in 2002, the pipeline didn t leak any oil (Nyman,
Johnson, and Roach, 2003). The success of the pipeline came from its supporting structures. The
engineering used in the TAPS should be applied to buildings in areas that are also prone to large
magnitude earthquakes, such as Washington and California. California is home to the San Andreas
fault, a major transform fault, just like the Denali, and Washington is home to the Seattle Basin,
whose geometry and geological units amplify main and aftershock waves. Washington and
California should first implement better building regulations, and if the premise is successful, it
could be applied anywhere large magnitude earthquakes occur.
Introduction
Large magnitude earthquakes occur on plate boundaries and can produce hazards such as
movement along faults, landslides, and tsunamis. In North America, the western coast is an active
margin, meaning that it is home to earthquakes and

to contribute 65%, 25% and 10% toward the overall coca production globally. Since then, due to
many US funded war efforts on drugs in these neighboring Andean countries, drug industry in
Columbia got a tremendous boost, increasing its market share to 90% and making it the world s
largest cocaine producer ever by 2000. Between 2000 and 2010, US invested close to $7.3bn on

It s hard to understand the direction of information flow or where the authority resides in a
network which is flexible and constantly changing, which makes it harder for law enforcements to
devise any strategic moves and predict the outcome. The network structure seemed to be really
dense in the core with a lot of small organizations representing as closures3 which are tied to each
other through brokers or middlemen making hefty profits in between by providing services through
constant access of new information. The strength of intra network operations lies in the hands of
these brokers. They could be very well characterized as connectors4. Think of the network structure

What Makes A Good Leader
What qualities make a good leader? You can ask a hundred different people, and you will get a
hundred different answers. A good leader is someone who accomplishes the mission, has the
respect of their subordinates, and makes the difficult decisions when needed. For me, I believe that
a great leader needs to have a variety of qualities, but most importantly a sense of fairness, hard
work/care, and common consideration for others. Different experiences throughout my life and
time at West Point have lead me to believe that these three tenants are what are most needed for a
great leader. In terms of a leader s moral character, common consideration has the greatest influence
on the success of a leader, because without common consideration, a... Show more content on

There are numerous occasions at West Point where I have seen individuals dole out unequal shares
of duties or rewards based on their personal feelings towards the recipients. Fairness and
impartiality are fundamental traits in good officers. If a leader singles out an individual for either
unfair rewards or punishments, it signals to the unit that there are other necessary factors needed
other than hard work to get ahead, such as cozying up to the platoon leader to get the good
assignments. Soldiers need to know that assignments or tasks they are assigned are either given
through merit, or are given equally to all soldiers in the unit. Unfair treatment is a quick way for
soldiers to drift away from the task at hand and instead focus on getting into the good graces of the
leader, leaving the unit less cohesive and the mission unaccomplished. I have witness firsthand here
at West Point many unfair decisions that were made solely out of how much someone liked or
hated the person they were dealing with. One such example that comes to mind is when one cadet
was given preferential treatment and allowed to get off morning workouts, while other cadets had
to continue. The physical development staff of my company forces any cadet with an APFT score
of less than 260 to show up to morning workouts on Monday, Wednesday and Friday of each week.
These cadets are given the opportunity to stop attending workouts by scoring above a 270 on a
diagnostic APFT conducted once a month.

The Joy Luck Club Meaning
Introduction: The title of the book is The Joy Luck Club, which Amy Tan wrote. The two main
places that the story takes place in are China and San Francisco. However, there are several
different years in which the story takes place. Some include 1918, 1923, and multiple undisclosed
years. The story is told in first person with viewpoints from many different characters.
Body:
The title of the book relates to the story because the Joy Luck Club is the name of the gathering
of Chinese Americans that Suyuan Woo started. As a child, Ying Ying was a restless rebel who
yearned for freedom; however, when she becomes an adult she becomes passive. She lets her
American husband make all the decisions. Lindo Jong is a bitter strong willed woman who fears she
has assimilated too much. By her mother, An Mei was taught to conceal her pain, and even though

From this book, we can learn that we can control our destiny. One important quote is, And I am
sitting at my mother s place at the mah jong table, on the East, where things begin, (Tan 41). It is
important because it shows that Jing Mei is ready to meet her half sisters. Another one is, [The
candle] fluttered a little [...] but still both ends burned strong. [I...] blew out my husband s end of
the candle, (Tan 60). This is important because it shows that Lindo Jong wants to change her
destiny. Another important quote is, In America I will have a daughter just like me. But over there
nobody will say her worth is measured by the loudness of her husband s belch, (Tan 17). This is
important because it shows that the woman wanted to change the destiny of her and her daughter.
Overall, in the book, I enjoyed learning about Chinese culture with the mah jong and the candle
being burned to see if a marriage will last. However, I could not fully understand the stories because

Zopiclone Is A Drug First Developed By Rhone Poulenc Rore
Zopiclone is a cyclopyrrolone drug first developed by RhГґne Poulenc Rore (1, page 220) in the
early 1970s (2). It is classified as a GABA A receptor agonist, and is a central nervous system
depressant. Zopiclone binds onto subunits on the GABA A receptor and modulates the opening of
the chloride ion channels in the neuron cell membrane (3, page 1). By increasing the conductance
of chloride ions and hyperpolarizing the neuron, the frequency of action potentials is reduced. This
causes an inhibition of brain activity, causing zopicloneto have hypnotic, sedative, muscle relaxant,
anxiolytic, and anticonvulsant effects (4).
Zopiclone acts much in the same way as benzodiazepines when used to treat insomnia, but was
believed to have less adverse effects, and less potential for developing tolerance and addiction. As
a result, it was first marketed as a better alternative to benzodiazepines. However, recent studies
have revealed that it is unclear whether zopiclone shows improvements over benzodiazepines when
assessed on therapeutic qualities and addiction potential (5, page 1). As a result, both zopiclone and
benzodiazepines are included in schedule IV of the United States Controlled Substances Act (6).
Zopiclone is known by several brand names, such as Imovane, Zimovane and Zimoclone (7). It is
used to treat insomnia in adults arising from increased sleep latency, frequent awakenings during in
the night, and premature awakening (3, page 1). Zopiclone alleviates the symptoms of

How Did Europeans Contact With Native Americans
Was Contact with Europeans catastrophic for Native Americans? Be Specific The first contact
between Europeans and the Americans transpired when Christopher Columbus arrived in America
in 1492. After five years when he first stepped on American soil, many other European explorers
started to visit America as well. At this point, the Europeans did not settle on a permanent basis.
Their reason for traversing to America was to find new routes for trade. One of the trade items
between Europeans and Native Americans was fresh meat that Europeans took in exchange of their
products in the quest to change their diet after long periods of sailing on the sea. Some of the trade
items that the Native Americans were interested in from the Europeans included... Show more

The Europeans brought about diseases that initially never transpired in the Native Americans
communities. Indian [Native Americans] population of 10 million that lived north of Mexico when
Columbus came would ultimately be reduced to less than a million. Huge numbers of Indians
would the from diseases introduced by the whites. (Zinn 14). An example of such was smallpox
associated with a Spanish called Herman Cortes and his army when they came to America in 1521.
Europeans were also responsible for bringing about other diseases such as influenza and measles to
healthy Native Americans. Contact with Europeans increased warfare with the Native Americans.
This was because of increased populations and the competition for the resources. The natives
resorted to war since they felt robbed of their land. The warfare came with many deaths as the
Europeans wanted to take over and dominate the entire homeland. To conclude, the contact between
the Europeans and the Native Americans did not have consequential benefits to the Native
Americans when compared with the negative impact. It is because the native population was
diminished sharply due to the warfare, diseases and even deracination of Native Americans from
their homeland. The negative impact that Europeans entrance brought about was far less beneficial

Modern Birth Control And Gender Roles Essay
Before the introduction of modern birth control, gender roles emphasized the responsibility of
women to conceive and raise children. Although this began to change in the in the mid twentieth
century, with the introduction of the first hormonal birth control pill, Enovid, taking place in 1960,
it was not readily accessible during that time period (Buttar and Seward, 2009, p. 1 3). This did not
change during the time period immediately following the introduction either; five years after the
introduction of Enovid, there was still controversy surrounding the use of contraceptives. In the
Supreme Court case of Griswold v. Connecticut, the legality of birth controlon the market was
debated, and the case concluded with the allowance of hormonal contraceptives, but it was limited
to married couples only under the right of marital privacy (George and Lewis, 2016, p. 1). The
controversy and secrecy that surrounded the use of birth control shortly after its introduction
indicates that although it was certainly present and used in society during this time period, it still
carried the negative social connotations of the past, which prevented it from being socially
normalized. In contrast, the standardization of birth control in society took place decades later,
from approximately the 1990 to 2010s.
In contemporary American society, birth control has become more readily accessible to women,
which is indicated by the increased usage of contraception in society. The number of birth

The World Of Yesterday, By Anthea Bell
Stefan Zweig s The World of Yesterday originally published in 1942 and translated into English
in 2009 by Anthea Bell is a perceptive memoir that skillfully recounts the life of Zweig (a Jewish
middle class male) beginning with his childhood in Vienna, Austria pre World War I and ends
right before Zweig s suicide in 1942. During his account, Zweig provides critical commentary on
various historical events that is invaluable when it comes to putting these events in the context of
the everyday life of the individuals living through them. He also provides accounts of many
societal structures as well as of interesting individuals that are not necessarily important in the
grand scheme of things but help the reader build a more complete picture of the period.
Throughout the book, Zweig maintains a cautionary as well as a didactic tone that attempts to
caution the reader about how society can change so drastically and rapidly. Overall, Zweig s book
is an excellent memoir that helps put major historical events into context; however, the book also
has some problems that undermine the delivery of the cautionary message of the book. This book
is a memoir by Stefan Zweigthat recounts his life and critically analyses some of the major world

How Does Ayn Rand Use Gender In Atlas Shrugged
In her book, Atlas Shrugged, Ayn Rand uses a fictional story to critique the end result of several
commonplace ideologies. The book most closely deals with the ultimate result that stems from a
Marxist slogan, From each according to his ability, to each according to his need. The world that
Rand creates has few differences from reality at its start, but as the story progresses, real world
ideologies are taken to the extreme, and societal collapse appears to be imminent. Much of this is
revealed through the thoughts and actions of a character that appears to be Rand s self insert,
Dagny Taggart. Dagny finds herself alienated from both her peers and those in charge of industry

Her gender also seems to contribute to the disdain that many characters hold for her. Because of
Dagny s refusal to excuse shortcomings for any reason, she pays little attention to any sexism in her
profession. Since much of the book is written with her thoughts at its forefront, Dagny s
alienation based on gender is easily forgotten. However, it is still evident. Rand does not ignore
sexism; she merely refuses to overplay it. One of the rare mentions of Dagny s gender in her
work is found on page 771, where Bertram Scudder introduces Dagny on his talk show with, the
last descendant of an illustrious name in our industrial history, the woman executive possible
only in America. This comment is brief, and appears harmless, but there is a deeper significance
within it. Scudder uses the words, only possible in America, to attribute Dagny s success to her
circumstance, detaching it from her own effort. This is one of the ways that several characters in
the book justify their prejudice against anyone who is better off than them; they attribute any
achievement or detriment to circumstance, minimizing the accomplishments of others and
excusing their own behavior. The characters who exhibit gender bias against Dagny are not
limited to men. In fact, much of the sexism of which she is subject comes from other women.
Readers are exposed to this in a brief encounter with a minor character named Betty Pope, who
expresses her disdain for Dagny, calling her a grease monkey. . .posing around like a big
executive, (Rand, 73). She then comments on Dagny s femininity, or lack thereof, implying that
running a railroad is a task that is beneath a proper woman. The next obvious drag on Dagny s
femininity comes from her brother s second source of companionship, his wife Cheryl. Cheryl
Taggart s first encounter with Dagny is not a friendly one, as she seems to feel the need to put
Dagny in her place. She

Today, showing your skin is a normal thing to do and most people flaunt what they have instead
of covering it. In circle eight, she would go into the category of panders and seducers because
she is using her body and sex appeal to gain attention. Additionally Marilyn had affairs with a lot
men, but she was also into women and had affairs with them as well. Marilyn was worried
because she sexually attracts men but she is into women and not being heterosexual was not
accepted at that time. Many people praised her for being perfect but internally and mentally, she
had many problems and Monroe has to worry about keeping her image ( Review: Hollywood ).
For her actions, Dante would place her in circle two, seven, and eight. Circle two is lust and her
affairs with different men shows that she was with them because of her own pleasure and she
also had sexual relationships with women. Her relationships with women is also a sin in circle
seven which is violence against God, specifically homosexuality because God created us so that
a man could be with a woman. Monroe is a panderer and seducer from circle eight because she
was in a sexual relationship with many people. Sexuality and homosexuality is being accepted
today and people are more open about who they are attracted to and they respect other s sexuality
but back then, heterosexuality was what is right. More people have become less modest today and
are not afraid of expressing themselves in different ways.

The Jewish community rejected the lax attitude concerning Mosaic Law. The Galatians, who
were brought up in an area of the world dominated by a polytheistic, law based religion, sought
comfort in the more disciplined Jewish approach. Paul: Appealing or Appalling? is the
surprising title of the first chapter in a book about the differing opinions, written by Christian
scholars, Marcus J. Borg and John Dominic Crossan. Their account of Paul s controversial stance
on a variety of major issues like gender roles and slavery helps to understand the historical
significance of Paul s evangelism. Jews were easier to reach than Gentiles, because of their
sacred education, therefore the issue of circumcision was definitely an issue among the first
converts to Christianity. The question on everyone s mind was, Do you have to be a Jew to be a
Christian? Judeans were taught that salvation would only come to those circumcised according to
the custom. Once in Jerusalem, Paul went to the elders to announce God s grace in the lives of the
Gentiles. They rejoiced in his message, but took notice of his advice against Jewish law,

supposed to make the money if the employers won t hire them in the first place? I understand
that people that do not go to college should not and probably could not make as much money as
someone that graduated college. Some people have a family before even graduating high
school, let alone college. But why is this any reason to keep these people from getting a well
paying job. This was also a problem for my mother. After working at her job for about two years
they told her that she could not move on in the field unless she started going to college. Of
course my mom took advantage of this ultimatum and went to college. She was lucky to find a
job that would work with and around her schedule. She is now going to college part time and
working full time. She probably won t graduate for at least eight years, but she is very determined
and I know that she will do it because she knows that it is the best for her and out family.
Many people don t realize that some people go home to a car or a van [at the end of the night], or
some people are forced to just work through their illness or injury because [they don t

Redesign Of Copley Square Analysis
Copley Square is a sort of visual representation or metaphor of Boston as a whole. Boston has for
centuries been a center of learning and culture, and Copley is surrounded today by the Boston
Public Library, numerous churches, and influential businesses. Boston is a junction between the
old and the new, and Copley sports differing ages of architecture varying from the Hancock tower
to the Old South Church. Boston is where different people come together, and Copley is where
the Back Bay meets the South End. Boston is known for its oddly charming seemingly unplanned
arrangement, and more so than anything else, Copley Square represents this (Krieger 47). In my
redesign of Copley square, I paid attention to all of these elements as well as others in an attempt
to create a destination that respects its surroundings and history in addition to drawing people in
and serving several purposes. The first aspect I worked on in redesigning Copley was the pathways.
I found that upon visiting the site, the current... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With the addition of an amphitheater, I hope to bring more street performers to the square,
which will then bring more people in to stay for longer periods of time while enjoying this time.
With more trees than in the current plan, the strong winds will be buffered, allowing visitors to
be more comfortable. The greater amount of green space hopes to draw more people in from the
surrounding communities to relax and have fun outdoors especially in warmer moths of the year.
The design of the pathways permits passersby to more efficiently get from one corner of the
square to another. This redesign will also still allow for the square s current uses to continue
including the farmers market. Benches facing inwards on the paths will allow for people to better
interact with one another and rest easily. These purposes will attract more people to the square and
keep them there for

A Brief Note On Asp.net And Cloud Computing Essay
ASP.NET Cloud Computing A research report Prepared for: Tony Assadi IT7x11 Advanced
Internet Application Development Whitireia Community Polytechnic, Porirua Prepared by:
Maen Terawasi Student ID: 21103436 Date Submitted: 10 April 2015 Executive Summary The
ASP.NET Framework offers a development environment that comes with various tools and
technologies that aid developers in building enterprise class web services, websites, and web
apps. Along with this ASP.NET is part of the Microsoft .NET Framework which gives the ability
to utilize classes within the .NET Framework. With the implementation of Cloud computing
platforms and ASP.NET the benefits offered by combining the two proves to be significant in
terms of cutting down costs, management, maintenance, and the need for resources since most
cloud providers are already providing SaaS (software as a service), PaaS (platform as a service),
and IaaS (infrastructure as a service) altogether. However demand to move onto the cloud is
substantially increasing resulting in the massive surge of cloud providers coming into existence.
With various cloud provider competitors out there Windows Azure which is a Microsoft cloud
platform is one of the more notable cloud providers when it comes to ASP.NET applications and
services over the web. Introduction The main objective of this research report is to present and
critically answer questions that have been designed specifically to look at ASP.NET

The Superordinate Concept In Writing By Nancy Sommers
A concept is defined as a general idea of something formed by mentally combining all of it s
characteristics. There are many different types of concepts: a superordinate concept which is the
most general, followed by a basic concept, lastly you have the subordinate concept which is
considered to be the most specific. The writing conceptI chose to write about is The sources of our
lived experience, when developed in our writing, help us to understand things through difference
and opposition, association and convergence. This concept written by Nancy Sommers, talks about
the ideaof how our experiences us help to shape our opinions. Everytime we go through
something in our lives whether big or small, positive or negative it shapes who we are as people
and can develop our views. Everyone goes through life dealing with their own issues and those
issues and differences we have between us to help shape our opinions. Since a person s opinion
and experiences are the basis of writing, this concept is extremely important. Not only is it just our
prior experiences that impact who we are as writers but our sense of self, language practices (also...

If you are asked to write a non academic, such as a personal story, you are using yourself as a
source, as you should be. Especially when you are writing about your own life, you are the main
source and family or friends could also be used as a secondary source. Even when writing an
academic essay you should never leave yourself behind. We take our experiences and use them as
sources to defend what we say in our writing. Without having this capability, everyone would agree
on the same thing which is not always helpful or even interesting. Getting different point of views
from everyone can be a good thing because it gives the opportunity to open up the discussion which
then can turn into being very educational for others

Essay on African-American American Nightmare in Song of...
American Dream or African American American Nightmare
The Declaration of Independence was written so Americans could achieve this dream, but the
African slave was never intended to be a part of this American Dream. To the African American,
there were and still are many restrictions that go along with the American Dream.
In Toni Morrison s novel, Song of Solomon, Macon Dead craved for the American Dream. He was
in denial and believed that he could be just as successful as the white man. Macon desired to own
everything, including people. Macon tells Milkman the following:
Let me tell you right now the one important thing you ll ever need to know:
Own things. And let things you own own things. Then you ll ... Show more content on

Witches in black dresses and underskirts; witches with pink eyes and green lips...So when he saw
the woman at the top of the stairs there was no way for him to resist climbing up toward her
outstretched hands, her fingers spread wide for him, her mouth gaping open for him, her eyes
devouring him. In a dream you climb stairs (239).
Was this old woman, Circe, real or part of one of Milkman s dreams/nightmares? Could Macon s
grandfather really fly?:
He was flying. He flew. You know, like a bird. Just stood up in the fields one day, ran up some hill,
spun around a couple of times, and was lifted up in the air. Went right on back to wherever it was
he came from (323).
Was Ruth, Milkman s mother, almost swallowed up by her garden plants as Milkman watched from
the kitchen window?:
They were smothering her, taking away her breath with their soft jagged lips. And she merely
smiled and fought them off as though they were harmless butterflies (105).
It really does not matter because dreams become reality and vice versa in Milkman s world.
The dream of the women in Song of Solomon was to find a man or husband to take care of them.
Ruth thought that by marrying a man with Macon s status, money and ownership of property, she
would live the perfect fairytale life. This dream turns into a nightmare as Macon either ignores her
or raises a hand to strike her. This unhappy marriage often caused Ruth to dream about

I Am A Normal Human Being
First and foremost, I believe that I am a normal human being. I don t consider myself to be out
of the ordinary except for my love of Prince, but if you don t like Prince or his music, can you
even call yourself a human? I digress, I thought that going into this assignment I would find out
more interesting things about myself, however, I learned quickly that that wasn t really the case.
See, what was interesting to me was very boring and weird to others, especially my friends that
aren t in theater. When I would go up to them and explain the new things that I am doing, they
would kind of just look at me and secretly judge, but it also let me know that I was enjoying
learning more about myself.
All my life I knew that I was flexible jointed and that I could do a lot of things such as putting my
leg over my head and interlocking my arms and moving them all around my body without breaking
that lock, but I also discovered that I could do other things without even noticing them. For instance,
I tend to bounce my knee whenever I am really into a story that I am telling, but also whenever I am
really passionate about something. Another thing that I noticed is that when I sit, I sway from side
to side or front to back, but I just have to be in motion. It s just something that allows me to burn off
the extra energy that is within me. I think that all the little things I do, such as leading with my left
foot and having my right face outward as I walk explains why it kind of looks like

Goldilocks Affirmative Defense
Goldilocks has admitted to having committed the act of murder and burglary, however, she asserts
affirmative defenses that would exonerate her actions from criminal liability. Affirmative dense
brings to light danger for the defense because once admitting the act the defendants have the
burden to, start matters off by putting in some evidence in support of their justification or excuse
defenses (Samaha, 2011). In addition, the burden of production will shift to the defense and it is
now the prosecution s job to cause doubt upon the defense s case. In Goldilocks case of a
justification defense this would involve her use of self defense and its necessity being that under
the circumstances, it was the right thing to do (Samaha, 2011). Furthermore,... Show more content

For an attack to be considered self defense it must apply to four requirements. The first is
unprovoked attacks in which the defender has to have not started or provoked the attack. In
Goldilocks case this is held because she was attempting to leave when Prince Charming saw and
forcibly locked her inside. The second requirement is necessity which is, also known as the
choice of evils, reflects popular moral intuitions and common sense: sometimes, breaking the
rules is the right indeed, the only thing to do in order to avoid a greater evil (Bergelson, 2012).
In Goldilocks case this choice of evils was a fact in both acts the burglary where she was given a
choice to either starve to death or break into a home so she can eat. The other instance was the
Prince Charming reaching for his walking stick that he uses to constantly physically abuse her
and the choice to defend herself. The third element of self defense is proportionality which is the
ability of a defender to use deadly force if no deadly force is not enough to repel the oncoming
attack with no excessive force (Samaha, 2011). In Goldilocks case Prince Charming is not only
bigger and stronger than her she was in no state where she could run away or hide she had no
choice. The last requirement is reasonable belief which is the belief that it was necessary to use
deadly force to repel the imminent deadly attack (Samaha, 2011). In Goldilocks case she was in a
position where she was going to have to fight for her life and the only way should would have
made it out alive was by using the

The Passage of Time and Life in The Swimmer, by John Cheever
Having written a multitude of short stories and novels, author, John Cheever, has showcased his
incredible writing abilities multiple times throughout his career. Even as a child, Cheever
outwardly expressed his desire to write. As proven by his longstanding career, Cheever s thirst for
writing remained with him throughout his entire life. In perhaps his most famous piece of work,
The Swimmer, Cheever s impeccable writing ability is showcased brilliantly. Although originally
set out to be a novel, The Swimmer has grown to become a widely recognized and analyzed short
story, one which both readers and literary critics alike admire. By drawing on his personal life and
by using a wide range of writing techniques, Cheever depicts and... Show more content on

It is this structure precisely that gives Cheever s works the power to resonate with a wide range of
individuals. Author of John Cheever s Flowering Forth: The Breakthroughs of 1947, James O Hara,
discusses this aspect of Cheever s writing in his academic journal:
He had continued to experiment with the choice of materials for his stories, and had gradually won
over editors with a combination of solid structural technique he had always known how to put a
story together and Hemingwayesque understatement. (51)
Although O Hara did not specifically address the short story The Swimmer in this particular
excerpt, this quotation is nonetheless viable and true in its claims.
Along with a solid structure, in order for a piece of fiction to resonate with readers, the work also
has to have meaningful characters. Cheever has proven to excel in this aspect of writing as well.
This excellence can also be attributed to Cheever and his personal life. Bloom writes: Just like
his characters, then, Cheever was not a perfect man, yet he was a decent one, who believed in
heroism and sentiment and family and a minor man s capacity to glory. Neddy Merrill, the main
character in The Swimmer, can be described in a similar manner, for he too is an imperfect man
who seeks glory and purpose. In the same vein, literary analyst, Robert A. Morace, states: The
characters in this and other Cheever fictions all face the same

My High School Science Projects
Machines are on a fast paced evolutionary track that renders them indispensable to the progress of
mankind. One such machine that has made great strides in the last century is the automobile.
Mobility has always been my area of fascination; the working of a simple bicycle to the advanced
Formula One car has always made me curious.
During my high school studies I was a student of science and mathematics, both these subjects
helped me in unraveling the mysteries of nature by better understanding principles that govern its
working. I have participated in several school and inter school science projects, one such project
that left lasting impression was that of a study on gear mechanism used in various tools,
fascinated by the same I was on self propelled path of discovery. I am driven by asking the
questions: why? and how? and this curiosity developed into a passion for machines as a whole and
led me to do an undergraduate program in Mechanical Engineering from PVG S College of
Engineering and Technology under the prestigious University of Pune, a leading academic
institution in the automotive hub of India, Pune.
The four year course exposed me to many fascinating subjects, my interest evolved as I explored
subjects like Manufacturing Process, Theory of Machines, Metallurgy, Fluid Mechanics, Machine
Design, Power Transmission System, IC engines etc. I have tried to be in tune with the latest
Mechanical technologies by attending courses offered by automotive industry itself,

  • 2. How Does Swift Use Satire In A Modest Proposal Analysis of Jonathan Swift s A Modest Proposal MAKE AN INTRO FOR THIS SENTANCE!!!! In A Modest Proposal , Swift effectively uses satire writing to reveal his annoyance with the government, papists, and overall citizens of poverty stricken Ireland in the late seventeenth century. Jonathan Swift constructs a ridiculous essay which he titled A Modest Proposal. He wrote this proposal to illustrate how backward the economy and standard of living are in Ireland, but also how his proposal could improve the economy and standard of living for the Irish people. Swift proposes that the babies of the poor will help the wealthy of Ireland, these babies will be used to supplement their food source by being eaten. Now they will no longer be a burden on society but now they will help contribute to the feeding of society. Swift makes this proposal because of Ireland s current sub standard living standards. Within his proposal Swift is offering a way to rid the county of its excess children and in turn using them to contribute to society so they do not grow up either turn thieves for want of work, or leave their dear native ... • 3. Social Science And Remedies For Social Engineering Introduction Forty three percent of in house members of organization were accountable for data loss. Twenty two percent was intentional data loss. Twenty one percent was accidental according to Intel Security (http://www.mcafee.com). The forty three percent is the people factor in information security systems. People are the problem and the solution. In the discussion I will state how people are the weakest link in information security system through social engineering. First, I will define social engineering. People have been victims of social engineer throughout time. The first case of social engineering could be argued was the Trojan Horse in ancient times in the Trojan War circa 800 B.C.E. according to Homer s Iliad (www.ancient.eu) or Kublai Khan s invasion of China in 1275 A.D to today s wire fraud emails. This paper will focus on social engineering and remedies for social engineering. Legend has it that the Mongol warrior leader, Kublia Khan, enticed the gatekeeper for access through the Great Wall into China. That simple act of bribery gave Khan s forces the ability to invade China. The gatekeeper, a person, was the weakest link in China s security back in 1275 A.D. The same holds true in 2016. Today, people are the weakest link in an organization s security plan. That security plan is inclusive of information security as well. An information security program needs to include: policy, education and training, awareness, and technology to ward off ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There are times of light and warmth... there are times of growth and expansion... (2013). Based on his words, it is evident that each of the four seasons brings about both positive and negative changes that everyone must endure; whether or not these changes are openly welcomed by their recipients, they cannot be avoided. Instead of ignoring these new events and changes, it is pivotal that humans and fictional characters alike take advantage of the opportunities proposed by each of the four seasons. Just as leaves fall off of trees, characters take may experience times in their lives when their health or relationships fall or slowly decay, which according to Foster s How to Read Literature Like a Professor, is essentially what fall and winter symbolize decay and death respectively. For instance, in Nicholas Sparks A Walk to Remember, the life of protagonist Jamie Sullivan, as narrated by antagonist Landon Carter, comes to an end during the fall and winter seasons. Landon narrates an important dialogue between Jamie when he says, You can t be in love with me, Landon, she [Jamie] said through red and swollen eyes. ... Why not? I [Landon] shouted... Because, she finally said softly,... I m dying, Landon (Sparks 1999). Landon is careful to mention that it is a grayish... cold winter day (Sparks 1999) before he retells the event of Jamie announcing her upcoming death. Jamie s preconceived, ongoing death relates to idea that fall represents decline, whereas her actual death is symbolized by winter. Because of her passing, Jamie and Landon s romance comes to an unfortunate conclusion, again showcasing how the autumn season metaphorically symbolizes decline. Relating to Fitzgerald s work, Nick narrates Gatsby s death by commenting, Gatsby shouldered the mattress and started for the pool... and in a moment disappeared among the yellowing trees.... ... • 6. Relationship Between Monetary Policy And The Stock Market 1. Introduction In the past 20 years, the central banks in most developed countries had successfully managed to control the inflation rate. However, the financial crisis 2008 has highlighted the links between financial market and policy. (Ravn, 2011) The topic I am going to discuss is the relationship between monetary policy and the stock market. What factors have influenced interest rate and how the policymakers should react to the change in stock market have driven the increasing attentions lately. Taylor Rule (2003) will be the core theory used to discuss the model tested. The interpretation of simple Taylor rule is very straightforward. According to the equationi_t=c+ОІ(ПЂ_t ПЂ_t^* )+Оі(y_t y_t^* )+Оµ_t , the policy will be mainly affected by inflation gap and output gap. (Woodford, 2001) The reason why Taylor uses interest rate to represent monetary policy is that the central bank likes to adjust interest rate as a tool to maintain the balance in the market. While, there is a strong debate about the other variables, in particular, stock price volatility. After taking asset price volatility into account, the augmented Taylor rule equation will be reformulated as:i_t=c+ОІ(ПЂ_t ПЂ_t^* )+Оі(y_t y_t^* )+∑_(k=1)^nв –’гЂ–Оґ_k s_(t k)+Оµ_t гЂ—. It will influence the monetary policy while the importance of asset price in the market is very controversial. The late 20th century appeared to experience a decline in married couples. Peckham comments on the most effective transition, which is to train singers to strengthen the weaker muscle group and to guide the singer in shaping vowels to achieve a more speech like pronunciation. In the complete Vocal technique, Sadolin replaces the word Belting with Edge, commenting that the term Belting is a common word to describe loud singing so it was an obvious choice for the name of the full metallic vocal mode. During my performance practice I found it challenging to sing using belt as I had previously be trained using the legit model. • 13. Essay on The Heart of Tragedy Based on Oedipus Rex During the Ancient Greek period, Aristotle, a great philosopher, wrote a book called the Poetics to describe what makes a great tragic play. Using the Oedipus Rex by Sophocles as the basis for his book, Aristotle goes into great detail about plot, character, and much more, breaking up the components of a tragedy. Since Oedipus Rex had a huge part in the creation of Aristotle s book, it fulfills many of the Greek philosopher s requirements for a tragic play. According to Aristotle, plot is one of the most important components of a tragedy. It must have a clear beginning, middle, and a cascade of events leading to the ending. At the end of the novel he is left a blind man with only his daughter. Spectacle is the act of avoiding violence and having ferocious events take place offstage to stop the evocation of the emotions pity and fear. These feelings are evoked in Oedipus Rex because if bad things happened to a good man, then they can happen to anyone. However, pity and fear are kept at bay when the messenger relays Jocasta s suicide and Oedipus s act of self harm because they didn t witness the events that took place offstage. Dues ex Machina is the idea that an unexpected power, such as the gods, will come and fix the situation. Aristotle dismisses this idea, believing that it is better to have a realistic and practical plot or else it will take away the story. Two good places to have divine intervention in Oedipus Rex would have been either before Oedipus left his adoptive parents or before he had unknowingly killed his father. A god or a higher being could have informed him of his origins and the curse, and he could have prevented the murder of his father and marriage to his mother. Instead, without the use of dues ex machina, Oedipus fulfilled the prophecy which resulted in his downfall. • 14. A Symbolic Activity Essay Memorialization as a Symbolic Activity There is a growing awareness that addressing past injustices are crucial for the process of healing and reconciliation. In order to move towards a peaceful future, governments must acknowledge and respond to the wrongs and injustices of the past. While there is an agreement between people that the process of reconciliation must acknowledge the wrongs of the past and the victims, many scholars debate about how such acknowledgments are best communicated, so that they will be sufficiently credible and effective in improving future relations. In fact, many argue that memory is crucially important as a response to past injustices, especially when dealing with human rightsviolations. Memorializing the past, through memorials, commemorative ceremonies, etc., is widely promoted as a valuable way of redressing the wrongs of the past. But what kind of redress can memorials provide, and how can they advance in transitional justice? Indeed, I consider these symbolic reparations to be a double edged sword due to the strengths and weaknesses, it presents as a practice for redressing the losses that were suffered by victims. In recent years, forgiveness has attracted attention as a possible response of victims to perpetrators in past violent human rights abuses. Moreover, transitional justice focuses on the effective and legitimate ways of addressing past wrongs and moving towards achieving political reconciliation and re establishing societies ... • 15. The Main Differences Between The Federalist Vs.... On November 19, 1863, the sixteenth president, Abraham Lincoln, declared in his famous Gettysburg Address, Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. Lincoln s sentiments express the longstanding tension between the North and the South about state s rights and slavery. Both of these causes sparked the Federalist vs. Antifederalist debates, Abolitionist Movement, and Dred Scott decision that ultimately fueled the divide that started the civil war. The issue of states rights was the main difference between the Federalist and Anti Federalist views, and its divergence led to the fundamentally opposing views of the north and south. The population of the northern states consisted mainly of Federalists who believed that it is clearly within the provision [of the Constitution] which authorizes the making of all needful rules and regulations concerning the property of the United States, as the same has been practiced upon by the Government . This view suggests that politicians could make laws and regulations based on implied powers of the Constitution, or non explicitly stated powers. With this right, the Federalists believed it was in the best interest of the country to make a national bank that the national government would control. The engineering used in the TAPS should be applied to buildings in areas that are also prone to large magnitude earthquakes, such as Washington and California. California is home to the San Andreas fault, a major transform fault, just like the Denali, and Washington is home to the Seattle Basin, whose geometry and geological units amplify main and aftershock waves. Washington and California should first implement better building regulations, and if the premise is successful, it could be applied anywhere large magnitude earthquakes occur. Introduction Large magnitude earthquakes occur on plate boundaries and can produce hazards such as movement along faults, landslides, and tsunamis. Illicit Drug Trafficking Role of social network structure in illicit drug trafficking in Columbia By Preeti Kanther Over the past three decades, the US has spent more than a trillion dollars to curtail drug industry operations in Latin America. During 1980s, Peru, Bolivia and Columbia used to contribute 65%, 25% and 10% toward the overall coca production globally. Since then, due to many US funded war efforts on drugs in these neighboring Andean countries, drug industry in Columbia got a tremendous boost, increasing its market share to 90% and making it the world s largest cocaine producer ever by 2000. A good leader is someone who accomplishes the mission, has the respect of their subordinates, and makes the difficult decisions when needed. For me, I believe that a great leader needs to have a variety of qualities, but most importantly a sense of fairness, hard work/care, and common consideration for others. Different experiences throughout my life and time at West Point have lead me to believe that these three tenants are what are most needed for a great leader. In terms of a leader s moral character, common consideration has the greatest influence on the success of a leader, because without common consideration, a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are numerous occasions at West Point where I have seen individuals dole out unequal shares of duties or rewards based on their personal feelings towards the recipients. Fairness and impartiality are fundamental traits in good officers. If a leader singles out an individual for either unfair rewards or punishments, it signals to the unit that there are other necessary factors needed other than hard work to get ahead, such as cozying up to the platoon leader to get the good assignments. Soldiers need to know that assignments or tasks they are assigned are either given through merit, or are given equally to all soldiers in the unit. Unfair treatment is a quick way for soldiers to drift away from the task at hand and instead focus on getting into the good graces of the leader, leaving the unit less cohesive and the mission unaccomplished. I have witness firsthand here at West Point many unfair decisions that were made solely out of how much someone liked or hated the person they were dealing with. One such example that comes to mind is when one cadet was given preferential treatment and allowed to get off morning workouts, while other cadets had to continue. The physical development staff of my company forces any cadet with an APFT score of less than 260 to show up to morning workouts on Monday, Wednesday and Friday of each week. These cadets are given the opportunity to stop attending workouts by scoring above a 270 on a diagnostic APFT conducted once a month. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 26. Zopiclone Is A Drug First Developed By Rhone Poulenc Rore Zopiclone is a cyclopyrrolone drug first developed by RhГґne Poulenc Rore (1, page 220) in the early 1970s (2). It is classified as a GABA A receptor agonist, and is a central nervous system depressant. Zopiclone binds onto subunits on the GABA A receptor and modulates the opening of the chloride ion channels in the neuron cell membrane (3, page 1). By increasing the conductance of chloride ions and hyperpolarizing the neuron, the frequency of action potentials is reduced. This causes an inhibition of brain activity, causing zopicloneto have hypnotic, sedative, muscle relaxant, anxiolytic, and anticonvulsant effects (4). Zopiclone acts much in the same way as benzodiazepines when used to treat insomnia, but was believed to have less adverse effects, and less potential for developing tolerance and addiction. As a result, it was first marketed as a better alternative to benzodiazepines. However, recent studies have revealed that it is unclear whether zopiclone shows improvements over benzodiazepines when assessed on therapeutic qualities and addiction potential (5, page 1). As a result, both zopiclone and benzodiazepines are included in schedule IV of the United States Controlled Substances Act (6). Zopiclone is known by several brand names, such as Imovane, Zimovane and Zimoclone (7). • 28. Modern Birth Control And Gender Roles Essay Before the introduction of modern birth control, gender roles emphasized the responsibility of women to conceive and raise children. Although this began to change in the in the mid twentieth century, with the introduction of the first hormonal birth control pill, Enovid, taking place in 1960, it was not readily accessible during that time period (Buttar and Seward, 2009, p. 1 3). This did not change during the time period immediately following the introduction either; five years after the introduction of Enovid, there was still controversy surrounding the use of contraceptives. In the Supreme Court case of Griswold v. Connecticut, the legality of birth controlon the market was debated, and the case concluded with the allowance of hormonal contraceptives, but it was limited to married couples only under the right of marital privacy (George and Lewis, 2016, p. 1). The controversy and secrecy that surrounded the use of birth control shortly after its introduction indicates that although it was certainly present and used in society during this time period, it still carried the negative social connotations of the past, which prevented it from being socially normalized. In contrast, the standardization of birth control in society took place decades later, from approximately the 1990 to 2010s. In contemporary American society, birth control has become more readily accessible to women, which is indicated by the increased usage of contraception in society. The number of birth ... During his account, Zweig provides critical commentary on various historical events that is invaluable when it comes to putting these events in the context of the everyday life of the individuals living through them. The world that Rand creates has few differences from reality at its start, but as the story progresses, real world ideologies are taken to the extreme, and societal collapse appears to be imminent. Rand does not ignore sexism; she merely refuses to overplay it. One of the rare mentions of Dagny s gender in her work is found on page 771, where Bertram Scudder introduces Dagny on his talk show with, the last descendant of an illustrious name in our industrial history, the woman executive possible only in America. This comment is brief, and appears harmless, but there is a deeper significance within it. Scudder uses the words, only possible in America, to attribute Dagny s success to her circumstance, detaching it from her own effort. This is one of the ways that several characters in the book justify their prejudice against anyone who is better off than them; they attribute any achievement or detriment to circumstance, minimizing the accomplishments of others and excusing their own behavior. The characters who exhibit gender bias against Dagny are not limited to men. In fact, much of the sexism of which she is subject comes from other women. Readers are exposed to this in a brief encounter with a minor character named Betty Pope, who expresses her disdain for Dagny, calling her a grease monkey. . .posing around like a big executive, (Rand, 73). She then comments on Dagny s femininity, or lack thereof, implying that running a railroad is a task that is beneath a proper woman. • 41. Essay on Nickel and Dimed Seeing Eye to Eye with Barbara Ehrenreich s article Nickel and Dimed. In her article, Nickel and Dimed, Barbara Ehrenreich says that many people earn far less than they need to live on ( 270.) A good percent of high school graduates move right on to college. They graduate college and then they usually move on to make a good amount of money to live a satisfying life. However, college is not made for everyone, and what would our world be with only professionals? I agree with Ehrenreich that the minimum wage is too low because, while people with open opportunities earn a better future for their families, many like my own, are fighting to get through on a daily basis due to our economy. Ehrenreich mentions in her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As Ehrenreich states employers will look at that $30,000 figure [...] and see nothing but bankruptcy ahead (270.) This makes it hard for employers to pay a living wage. They are afraid of their employees declaring bankruptcy while working for them. Well, how are people supposed to make the money if the employers won t hire them in the first place? I understand that people that do not go to college should not and probably could not make as much money as someone that graduated college. Some people have a family before even graduating high school, let alone college. But why is this any reason to keep these people from getting a well paying job. This was also a problem for my mother. After working at her job for about two years they told her that she could not move on in the field unless she started going to college. Of course my mom took advantage of this ultimatum and went to college. She was lucky to find a job that would work with and around her schedule. She is now going to college part time and working full time. She probably won t graduate for at least eight years, but she is very determined and I know that she will do it because she knows that it is the best for her and out family. Many people don t realize that some people go home to a car or a van [at the end of the night], or some people are forced to just work through their illness or injury because [they don t ... • 43. Redesign Of Copley Square Analysis Copley Square is a sort of visual representation or metaphor of Boston as a whole. Boston has for centuries been a center of learning and culture, and Copley is surrounded today by the Boston Public Library, numerous churches, and influential businesses. Boston is a junction between the old and the new, and Copley sports differing ages of architecture varying from the Hancock tower to the Old South Church. Boston is where different people come together, and Copley is where the Back Bay meets the South End. Boston is known for its oddly charming seemingly unplanned arrangement, and more so than anything else, Copley Square represents this (Krieger 47). In my redesign of Copley square, I paid attention to all of these elements as well as others in an attempt to create a destination that respects its surroundings and history in addition to drawing people in and serving several purposes. The first aspect I worked on in redesigning Copley was the pathways. I found that upon visiting the site, the current... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The greater amount of green space hopes to draw more people in from the surrounding communities to relax and have fun outdoors especially in warmer moths of the year. The design of the pathways permits passersby to more efficiently get from one corner of the square to another. Along with this ASP.NET is part of the Microsoft .NET Framework which gives the ability to utilize classes within the .NET Framework. With the implementation of Cloud computing platforms and ASP.NET the benefits offered by combining the two proves to be significant in terms of cutting down costs, management, maintenance, and the need for resources since most cloud providers are already providing SaaS (software as a service), PaaS (platform as a service), and IaaS (infrastructure as a service) altogether. However demand to move onto the cloud is substantially increasing resulting in the massive surge of cloud providers coming into existence. With various cloud provider competitors out there Windows Azure which is a Microsoft cloud platform is one of the more notable cloud providers when it comes to ASP.NET applications and services over the web. Introduction The main objective of this research report is to present and critically answer questions that have been designed specifically to look at ASP.NET ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. The Superordinate Concept In Writing By Nancy Sommers A concept is defined as a general idea of something formed by mentally combining all of it s characteristics. There are many different types of concepts: a superordinate concept which is the most general, followed by a basic concept, lastly you have the subordinate concept which is considered to be the most specific. The writing conceptI chose to write about is The sources of our lived experience, when developed in our writing, help us to understand things through difference and opposition, association and convergence. This concept written by Nancy Sommers, talks about the ideaof how our experiences us help to shape our opinions. Everytime we go through something in our lives whether big or small, positive or negative it shapes who we are as people and can develop our views. Everyone goes through life dealing with their own issues and those issues and differences we have between us to help shape our opinions. Since a person s opinion and experiences are the basis of writing, this concept is extremely important. Not only is it just our prior experiences that impact who we are as writers but our sense of self, language practices (also... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... American Dream or African American American Nightmare The Declaration of Independence was written so Americans could achieve this dream, but the African slave was never intended to be a part of this American Dream. In a dream you climb stairs (239). Was this old woman, Circe, real or part of one of Milkman s dreams/nightmares? Could Macon s grandfather really fly?: He was flying. He flew. You know, like a bird. Just stood up in the fields one day, ran up some hill, spun around a couple of times, and was lifted up in the air. Went right on back to wherever it was he came from (323). Was Ruth, Milkman s mother, almost swallowed up by her garden plants as Milkman watched from the kitchen window?: They were smothering her, taking away her breath with their soft jagged lips. And she merely smiled and fought them off as though they were harmless butterflies (105). It really does not matter because dreams become reality and vice versa in Milkman s world. The dream of the women in Song of Solomon was to find a man or husband to take care of them. I digress, I thought that going into this assignment I would find out more interesting things about myself, however, I learned quickly that that wasn t really the case. See, what was interesting to me was very boring and weird to others, especially my friends that aren t in theater. When I would go up to them and explain the new things that I am doing, they would kind of just look at me and secretly judge, but it also let me know that I was enjoying learning more about myself. All my life I knew that I was flexible jointed and that I could do a lot of things such as putting my leg over my head and interlocking my arms and moving them all around my body without breaking that lock, but I also discovered that I could do other things without even noticing them. For instance, I tend to bounce my knee whenever I am really into a story that I am telling, but also whenever I am really passionate about something. Another thing that I noticed is that when I sit, I sway from side to side or front to back, but I just have to be in motion. It s just something that allows me to burn off the extra energy that is within me. • 49. Goldilocks Affirmative Defense Goldilocks has admitted to having committed the act of murder and burglary, however, she asserts affirmative defenses that would exonerate her actions from criminal liability. Affirmative dense brings to light danger for the defense because once admitting the act the defendants have the burden to, start matters off by putting in some evidence in support of their justification or excuse defenses (Samaha, 2011). In addition, the burden of production will shift to the defense and it is now the prosecution s job to cause doubt upon the defense s case. In Goldilocks case of a justification defense this would involve her use of self defense and its necessity being that under the circumstances, it was the right thing to do (Samaha, 2011). Furthermore,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For an attack to be considered self defense it must apply to four requirements. The first is unprovoked attacks in which the defender has to have not started or provoked the attack. In Goldilocks case this is held because she was attempting to leave when Prince Charming saw and forcibly locked her inside. The second requirement is necessity which is, also known as the choice of evils, reflects popular moral intuitions and common sense: sometimes, breaking the rules is the right indeed, the only thing to do in order to avoid a greater evil (Bergelson, 2012). In Goldilocks case this choice of evils was a fact in both acts the burglary where she was given a choice to either starve to death or break into a home so she can eat. The other instance was the Prince Charming reaching for his walking stick that he uses to constantly physically abuse her and the choice to defend herself. The third element of self defense is proportionality which is the ability of a defender to use deadly force if no deadly force is not enough to repel the oncoming attack with no excessive force (Samaha, 2011). In Goldilocks case Prince Charming is not only bigger and stronger than her she was in no state where she could run away or hide she had no choice. The last requirement is reasonable belief which is the belief that it was necessary to use deadly force to repel the imminent deadly attack (Samaha, 2011). Even as a child, Cheever outwardly expressed his desire to write. As proven by his longstanding career, Cheever s thirst for writing remained with him throughout his entire life. In perhaps his most famous piece of work, The Swimmer, Cheever s impeccable writing ability is showcased brilliantly. Author of John Cheever s Flowering Forth: The Breakthroughs of 1947, James O Hara, discusses this aspect of Cheever s writing in his academic journal: He had continued to experiment with the choice of materials for his stories, and had gradually won over editors with a combination of solid structural technique he had always known how to put a story together and Hemingwayesque understatement. (51) Although O Hara did not specifically address the short story The Swimmer in this particular excerpt, this quotation is nonetheless viable and true in its claims. Along with a solid structure, in order for a piece of fiction to resonate with readers, the work also has to have meaningful characters. Cheever has proven to excel in this aspect of writing as well. This excellence can also be attributed to Cheever and his personal life. Bloom writes: Just like his characters, then, Cheever was not a perfect man, yet he was a decent one, who believed in heroism and sentiment and family and a minor man s capacity to glory. Neddy Merrill, the main character in The Swimmer, can be described in a similar manner, for he too is an imperfect man who seeks glory and purpose. In the same vein, literary analyst, Robert A. During my high school studies I was a student of science and mathematics, both these subjects helped me in unraveling the mysteries of nature by better understanding principles that govern its working.
