2. Name
The name for my magazine is ‘Roughcopy’. I came up with this name
when I was brainstorming different ideas, first of all I came up with
‘Blankcopy’ but I thought that it made the magazine sound
boring/plain but I liked the idea of ‘…copy’. I thought of different ideas
for it and came up with roughcopy. I think that this is a good name for
my magazine and shows my genre well, as I think the ‘pop’ genre,
strives for perfection and tries to portray the ‘perfect’ look and makes
people think that that’s what they should look like. I believe alternate
isn’t as much like this and it makes people think its okay to be
different and alternate to others, I also think that this will draw people
into my magazine. The final decision of my masthead was from
others, as I asked people which one they preferred and I did a chart.
Roughcopy was the most popular masthead and my personal
favorite.
3. Price & Frequency Of
Publication
The price of magazines vary on the content and how often
there are new copies out, the more often there out they
will be cheaper, ones what are out less often are more
expensive. Alternate magazines can come out either
monthly, weekly or once every fortnight, all depending on
which magazine. For example NME (an alternate
magazine) comes out every week and are priced at £2.20.
Where as Q (another alternate magazine) comes out once
a month and is priced at £3:50/£4:50. My magazine will be
a magazine that comes out monthly and will be £3.50.
4. Positioning Statement
My positioning statement will be ‘Keeping It Real’. I have
decided this through social networking feedback and partly by
choice. Once I thought of my three positioning statements to ask
people there favorite, this was mine. ‘Keeping It Real’ was my
favorite positioning statement as I believed that it portrays my
genre well and that it shows what the indie/alternate genre is all
about. It is about putting across realism and reality that people
are different and that not every body is the same, and it is not a
necessity in life to strive towards the ‘perfect’ image that media
portrays, as you can be perfect in your own way and find
yourself in the real world and be you, and true to yourself.
5. Distribution
The distribution of my magazine would not be in supermarkets such
as asda, tesco or morrisons. As in them stories the majority of the
magazines sold and the majority of the magazine’s what sell well
there are pop magazines which children/younger teenagers may walk
past and be drawn in by the stereotypical fonts, colors and pictures.
Whereas my magazine people would more have to know about to
want to buy, and my target audience is specific, therefore it would be
sold in alternate shops such as Affleck's palace or from shops in
Manchester. Also I would distribute it online, as my target audience
are young adults who stereotypically are online often, therefore it
could be advertised on social networking sites, with links to where
you can buy the magazine straight away.
6. Rationale
The rationale of my magazine is to inform the readers of new music,
upcomng artists, new songs, tour/gig information etc. This is because i
want my magazine to be informative, even though my magazine will not
just be one for information, and will not be too formal. But will be quite
formal so that people will gain information when they read it. Whereas
magazines with the gengre ‘pop’ is more for readers who would want to
read gossip and stories about certain artists or read about the latest
awards show and articles such as that. Whereas the alternative genre
focus more on the music than on people’s looks or the gossip about that
individual. I also want the rationale to be to inform the readers of new
music, upcoming artists, new songs, tour/gig information as when I did
research and asked my trarget audience that is what they said they
would like to read about in an alternative magazine and not things such
as gossip.
7. Style/Layout/Colour
The style of my magazine will be formal, but not overly formal. The mast head
will be black, smart but which stands out, so that people could easily
recognise the magazine. There will be a large image on the cover and cover
stories around that, in red, black and white to match the colour scheme. The
contents page and double page spread will have black easy to read writing
so that it is easily understandable and does not take any attention of the
information. There will be images on all the pages of my magazine so that It
is not just boring, but they will be in a formal manner, instead of being in
bubbles etc, like a pop magazine would have. The colour scheme for my
magazine is red, white and black. I chose this as when I interviewed people
and asked the question ‘What 3 colours remind you of a alternate magazine’
over 80% of people said red white and black. This is also the usual colour
scheme for a indie or alternate magazine, such as NME or Q.
8. Regular Content
There are numerous things which I will use to be regular content of
my magazine (things which will be in my magazine every month).
The first thing is the positioning statement, the masthead (including
the font and color of It). I would also have the ‘top ten new song
releases’ in each issue, as when I was gathering research into what
to put in my magazine a large majority of people said they would
want to read about new song releases, so I believe it would be a
popular read. Also the ‘social shockers’ page at the back would also
be in each issue. The final bit of regular content I would have is a
competition in each issue, as competitions would draw readers in,
and even if they haven’t bought the magazine before they could get
drawn in by a certain competition they would like to win and
purchase the magazine, and enjoy it. The color scheme and layout
would all be regular content.
9. Featured Content
The featured content of this issue is the small details, such as
detailed stories, specific interviews and specific competitions.
Also each issue a few of the stories will get changed
completely, for example an interview changed for something
completely different because if my magazine was the same
all the time readers would get bored of it easily and not
continue to read or buy it. But there has to be some regular
content so people can recognise the magazine easily, for
example the colour scheme and the contents & cover layouts
will be the same. There will also be 1 or 2 regular stories as
they were the most asked for when doing research.
