International Research CoordinationSTAR-IDAZ
(Global Strategic Alliances for the Coordination of Research on the Major Infectious Diseases of Animals and
Zoonoses)
A global initiative to address the coordination of
research programmes at international level in the
area of animal health and in particular infectious
animal diseases including zoonoses.
6. STAR-IDAZ Outputs/Achievements
• A database of research publications
• A research programmes database (including capacity
and activities)
• Research needs at global, regional and industry sector
levels established
• Agendas on target priority diseases and issues
developed
• Instruments to enable cooperation, clustering and
partnerships identified
• Development of a long-term Strategic Research Agenda
• An extensive network of research programme managers
developed
CRWAD – PRRSV – Dec ‘16
7. International Research
Consortium(IRC)
Higher level of commitment for coordinated research activities
through the STAR-IDAZ International Research Consortium for
Animal Health (IRC)
•Agree minimum level of investment in research on priorities over a five
year period (threshold $US 10 million; group funding commitment
possible)
•Agree delivery targets
•Agree to coordinate/align funding to deliver these targets (members' own
funding procedures, unless agreed otherwise; governance document &
policy guidelines)
•Agree to share research results (as much as necessary, without
jeopardising IPR)
•20 partners from 13 countries plus one international organisation and
three from industry have signed Letter of Intent to participate
•Total combined research budget of $US 2.5+ billion

11. To coordinate research at international level to
contribute to new and improved animal health
strategies for at least 30 priority
diseases/infections/issues
The deliverables include:
• Candidate vaccines
• Diagnostics
• Therapeutics
• Other animal health products and procedures
• Key scientific information/tools to support risk analysis

15. SIRCAH Activities
• Establish working groups for priority diseases and
crosscutting issues - assisting with the organisation of
meetings, including helping to pull together the gap analysis
and mapping funding activities against identified research
needs.
• Produce and publish gap analysis and roadmap reports from
working groups.
• Advise the Scientific Committee (SC) and ExC on how research
programmes could be aligned and make funding
recommendations based on the gap analysis, roadmap
reports and current funding activities.
• Help mobilise resources - bringing together funding bodies
and helping to identify funding opportunities
• Facilitating knowledge transfer to bring innovation to the
market

Editor's Notes
STAR-IDAZ was an EU funded project with the aim to accelerate coordinated development of animal disease control methods through the sharing of information, reduction of duplication and more efficient use of resources. Network of research funders and programme managers including industry partners (Zoetis, Merial and IFAH) and the OIE. Regional networks and disease networks were established in addition to the network at the global level. Researchers are involved at the disease network level.
Network now operating under an MoU signed, as of 27/4/2016, by 28 funding organisations from 21 countries
A four-year EU-funded global initiative to address the coordination of research programmes at international level
STAR-IDAZ had 25 partners from 18 countries. Regional networks were established for a) the Americas, b) Asia and Australasia, and d) Africa and the Middle East complementing the existing European network – so total outreach = > 50 countries
Network now operating under an MoU signed, as of 27/4/2016, by 28 funding organisations from 21 countries
In addition to funding bodies and Programme Owners OIE will also be a member of the Executive Committee
Secretariat – European Commission called for proposals to establish a secretariat in their 2016 Work Programme.
Scientific Committee – approx. 15 independent experts covering a range of fields.
Working groups – involving the leading researchers in the field including those from projects supported by the IRC partners.
